<dcterms:abstract>This research explores the hydrochar production from grape pomace via hydrothermal carbonization and the determination of the kinetic parameters of its combustion process. The hydrochar was obtained by hydrothermal carbonization at 220 ◦C for 240 min with self-generated pressure. The process indicated a mass yield of 65.21 %, and the hydrochar exhibited an HHV of 26.60 MJ/kg, showing its potential as an efficient biofuel. Thermokinetic analysis of hydrochar combustion was conducted using multiple complementary methods: isoconversional analysis, mathematical deconvolution, combined kinetic analysis of each step, and optimization of parameters through nonlinear regression. The findings indicate that the overall process starts at ~152 ◦C and involves three apparent overlapping steps. The apparent activation energies were 165, 122.9, and 185.6 kJ/mol, while the apparent ln</dcterms:abstract>

The presence of heavy metals represents a risk to the consumer’s health. Lead is usually determined by atomic spectrometry where a stage of acidic digestion is mandatory. In this work, hydride generation was chosen as the sample introduction technique; plumbane was directly generated in honey and determined by microwave induced plasma emission spectrometry (HG MIP OES). Different cleaning procedures, use of arsenic as internal standard, matrix match calibration and oxygen flow injection in the plasma were evaluated for controlling the frothing in the reaction chamber, abatement of the memory effect, and minimising gas-phase interferences. Limits of detection (3 s) and quantification (10 s) were 0.024 mg kg 1 and 0.081 mg kg 1; linear range was within 8.1–56 μg kg 1 and precision of repeatability 13 %. Trueness was assessed at three concentration levels with a reference sample (recoveries between 107 % and 122 %) and with spiked samples at 0.10 mg kg 1 level (recoveries between 82 % and 116 %). Direct HG MIP OES is a fast and confident screening method for lead monitoring in honey.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>This work aims to develop a stereoselective enzymatic alternative for the radiosynthesis of [11C](S,S)-S-adenosylmethionine ([11C](S,S)-SAM), a potential PET-CT radiotracer for monitoring particularly aggressive prostate tumors. Conventional synthesis of this compound has been carried out at Uruguayan Center of Molecular Imaging, resulting in an almost racemic mixture 53:47 ratio of (R,S) to (S,S) isomer. Producing the radiotracer in an optically pure form is a requirement for administration to humans and additionally it would enhance diagnostic sensitivity when administered to the patient. The main challenges were designing a biocatalyst capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of the radiotracer synthesis module and achieving the reaction in a very short time due to the rapid decay of 11C. A mutant of E. coli methionine adenosyltransferase (I303V MAT) with enhanced SAM synthesis was cloned, expressed, and immobilized on agarose using an irreversible covalent isourea bond. This immobilized enzyme synthesized [11C](S,S)-SAM from [11C]L-methionine in an automated module, with the labeled methionine produced in situ from [11C]CH3I and L-homocysteine thiolactone. The product was obtained with an enantio and diasteromeric excess greater than 99 % and average conversion of 80 %. The reuse of the immobilized enzyme was studied, showing that after three cycles of reuse the radiosynthesis performance remained unchanged.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The effect of partial substitution of lanthanum by magnesium on the catalytic activity of the Ni-La2Zr2O7 catalyst in the biogas tri-reforming reaction was studied. Four catalysts, Ni-La2-xMgxZr2O7-δ (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1), were prepared using a modified polymeric precursor method, characterized using several techniques, and evaluated at 800 ◦C with a sub-stoichiometric molar feed composition of CH4/CO2/H2O/O2 = 1/0.33/0.33/0.08. The catalyst with x = 0.5 showed the best performance, which is attributed to its optimum properties of nickel particle size, metal-support interactions, and basicity. A stability test was performed with this catalyst using a molar feed composition of CH4/CO2/H2O/O2 = 1/0.33/0.67/0.08, previously optimized to obtain a synthesis gas with a H2/CO ≈ 2 molar ratio for 100 h, and compared with a commercial steam reforming catalyst. The catalyst with x = 0.5 exhibited higher CH4 and CO2 conversions, a lower amount of carbon deposited, and a lower degree of nickel particle sintering.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Biological glycans mediate several physiological processes, thus altered glycosylation patterns can lead to different diseases such as autoimmune, infectious, chronic anti-inflammatory diseases, or even cancer. In fact, alterations in fucosylation in either N- or O-glycans are among the most frequent changes in glycosylation patterns associated with cancer. Therefore, elucidation of the role of glycoconjugate glycans is essential for understanding the development of pathologies where they are involved. In this sense glycosidases are excellent tools, since they catalyse the selective removal of sugar residues, allowing the evaluation of changes in their biological role due to glycan removal. This work describes the purification and characterization of a α-fucosidase from the fungus Dichostereum sordulentum 1488. It is a homodimer with a molecular weight of 214 kDa and optimum pH and temperature of 4.0 and 70 ◦C respectively. It has a KM of 0.27 mM and VMax of 3.3 μmoles PNP/ min per mg for the substrate p-nitrophenyl-α-L-fucopyranoside, showing a substrate inhibition profile. It showed high specificity for the hydrolysis of fucose linked by α-(1,2) bonds. The identification, purification, and characterization of this new α-fucosidase is highly relevant for enlarging the availability of glycosidases for use as tools for glycan elucidation.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The development of new radiopharmaceuticals for the detection of hidden infection foci has great relevance for early detection and the selection of the correct treatment, particularly in immunosuppressed patients. In that sense, the labelling of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that are capable of binding specifically to the pathogenic microorganism which causes the infection, should provide a sufficiently specific agent, able to distinguish an infection from a sterile inflammation. Defensins are particularly interesting molecules with antimicrobial activity, the EcgDf1 defensin was identified from the genome of a Uruguayan native plant, Erythrina crista-galli, the ‘Ceibo’ tree. Our group has previously reported a synthetic biologically active short analogue EcgDf21 (ERFTGGHCRGFRRRCFCTKHC) successfully labelled with 99mTc. Herein we present a shorter analogue which also preserves the γ-core domain, as a pharmacophore for a potential infection detection agent. This peptide was derivatized with the bifunctional chelating agent 1,4,7-triazacyclononane-1,4,7-triacetic acid (NOTA) through a lysine linker in the amino-terminal group (NOTA-KGHCRGFRRRC) and radiolabelled with 68Ga ([68Ga]Ga-NOTA-K-EcgDf1(10)). The [68Ga]Ga-NOTA-K-EcgDf1(10) labelling procedure rendered a product with high radiochemical purity and stability in the labelling milieu. The Log P value indicated that the complex has a hydrophilic behaviour, confirmed by the biodistribution profile. The [68Ga]Ga-NOTA-K-EcgDf1(10) complex demonstrated specific binding to cultures of Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. Its biodistribution showed renal elimination and low accumulation in the rest of the body. It was possible to successfully differentiate sterile inflammation from infection by PET images in nude mice with a target/non-target ratio of 3.3 for C. albicans and 3.7 for A. niger, respectively.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>In rice paddies, soil and plant-derived organic matter are degraded anaerobically to methane (CH4), a powerful greenhouse gas. The highest rate of methane emission occurs during the reproductive stage of the plant when mostly dicarboxylic acids are exudated by the roots. The emission of methane at this stage depends largely on the cooperative interaction between dicarboxylic acid-fermenting bacteria and methanogenic archaea in the rhizosphere. The fermentation of tartrate, one of the major acids exudated, has been scarcely explored in rice paddy soils. In this work, we characterized an anaerobic consortium from rice paddy soil composed of four bacterial strains, whose principal member (LT8) can ferment tartrate, producing H2 and acetate. Tartrate fermentation was accelerated by co-inoculation with a hydrogenotrophic methanogen. The assembled genome of LT8 possesses a Na+-dependent oxaloacetate decarboxylase and shows that this bacterium likely invests part of the H2 produced to reduce NAD(P)+ to assimilate C from tartrate. The phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene, the genome-based classification as well as the average amino acid identity (AAI) indicated that LT8 belongs to a new genus within the Sporomusaceae family. LT8 shares a few common features with its closest relatives, for which tartrate degradation has not been described. LT8 is limited to a few environments but is more common in rice paddy soils, where it might contribute to methane emissions from root exudates.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Introduction: Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. (Asteraceae), called alecrim-do-campo, vassoura, or vassourinha, is the precursor of green propolis that is used in traditional medicine for treating conditions such as dyspepsia, fatigue, inflammation, mild fever, and high blood pressure. This study aimed to summarise botanical, chemical, pharmacologic, and toxicologic reports about B. dracunculifolia and contribute new information on its anatomy and essential oil composition. Methods: This study reviewed international databases, querying keywords related to traditional use, phyto chemicals, biological activities (excluding animal studies), nanotechnology, clinical trials, and toxicity. New contributions regarding micromorphology of leaves and stems were analysed by light and scanning electron microscopy, and crystals were observed by polarised microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, and Raman troscopies. Essential oils and hydrolates were generated from distinct sites and analysed using gas graphy/mass spectrometry. Results: Botanical, chemical, pharmacologic, and toxicologic studies of B. dracunculifolia are reviewed herein along with this plant’s use in nano- and biotechnological applications. Major compounds present in the essential oils and volatile extracts of B. dracunculifolia include monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, while the organic tracts are rich in phenolics (flavonoids, caffeoylquinic, and prenylated acids) and terpenoids (diterpenoids and triterpenoids). Conclusions: Previously reported chemical and pharmacologic studies of B. dracunculifolia provided solid formation about the pharmacologic effects of this medicinal plant and the green propolis produced from it. New information reported here on the micromorphology and phytochemistry (essential oil and hydrolate tion) of B. dracunculifolia can be used to facilitate the identification of this plant in comparison to other related species and for quality control.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Bismuth-based chalcohalides have garnered significant attention over the past five years due to their promising optoelectronic properties, and applicability in photodetection, ionizing radiation detection, photocatalysis, and solar cells. Among these compounds, Bi19S27I3 stands out as a novel material with relatively unexplored synthesis and properties. In this study, we introduce a green synthesis approach for Bi19S27I3 nanostructures, employing the hot injection method under mild conditions with water as the solvent. By utilizing polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a capping agent with molar proportions [PEG : Bi] 0.5 : 1, 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 and adjusting the reaction time (5 min or 270 min), we successfully controlled the morphology, yielding either round nanoparticles, nanorolls, or a combination of both. For instance, longer reaction times such as 270 min enhance the crystallinity of the material and also encourage morphology uniformity, while PEG favors a rounded morphology. Our findings underscore the significant capping effect of PEG, particularly evident in the photocatalytic activity of Bi19S27I3 towards Cr(VI) reduction. Through this facile and efficient synthesis strategy, we tailored the morphology of Bi19S27I3 and demonstrated its efficacy in Cr(VI) photocatalysis, achieving a remarkable 91% reduction for the nanoroll-based sample with PEG: Bi [1 : 1]. This innovative approach not only provides an environmentally friendly method for synthesizing Bi19S27I3 but also highlights its potential as an effective photocatalyst for environmental remediation.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Moringa stenopetala is considered a superfood due to the many bioactive compounds that it provides to the diet. However, like all edible plants, it is mandatory to guarantee food safety. Thus it is necessary to develop analytical methods that can rapidly and accurately determine hazardous pollutants, to evaluate compliance with food regulations. In this regard, two multi-component procedures were developed trying to cover some of the main organic and inorganic potential contaminants. A microwave-assisted digestion followed by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry was used for arsenic, cadmium, and lead determination, while a modification of the QuEChERS protocol followed by gas chromatographytandem mass spectrometry was employed for the determination of 55 pesticides from different families. Both analytical methods were thoroughly validated according to international guidelines. The analyzed samples obtained from the Uruguayan market showed compliance with both, national and international, food regulations. The holistic approach employed in this research is not commonly presented in the literature, thus constituting a novel way to face food safety.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Purpose: The current diagnostic methods for leptospirosis diagnosis are technically complex and expensive, with limited applicability to specialized laboratories. Furthermore, they lack diagnostic accuracy in the acute stage of the disease, which coincides with a period when antibiotics are highly effective. New simple and accurate tests are mandatory to decentralize and improve diagnosis. Here, we introduced a new lateral flow immunoassay (Lepto-LF) for human leptospirosis. Methods: We conducted a double-blinded assay using 104 serum samples from patients with confirmed or discarded diagnosis for leptospirosis. The diagnostic performance of Lepto-LF was estimated across different ranges of days from onset of symptoms (dpo), considering the diagnostic algorithm as reference standard. Additionally, it was compared with the screening methods enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (IgM-ELISA) and the slide agglutination test using temperature-resistant antigen (SATR). Results: Lepto-LF exhibited perfect diagnostic performance with a Youden´s index J = 1 from 6 dpo in the acute phase. IgM-ELISA gave slightly lower accuracy with J = 0.91 and 95.5% of both sensitivity and specificity; while SATR showed a markedly inferior yield (J = 0.41, sensitivity = 95.5%, specificity = 45.5%). The performances remained consistent in the convalescence phase of the disease (> 10 dpo). Conclusion Lepto-LF was found to be a reliable test for simple, rapid and early diagnosis of leptospirosis, resulting a promising tool for decentralizing leptospirosis diagnosis and enabling timely treatment of patients. In addition, Lepto-LF may be employed as confirmatory test, especially in remote areas and vulnerable contexts where the standard MAT is not available.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>A series of new hybrid compounds was prepared combining tetrahydropyran rings with different aromatic systems by means of a 1,2,3-triazole, using a building block strategy. The design of these structures was guided by Lead-Likeness and Molecular Analysis (LLAMA) software, adding modifications to our most potent scaffold (the tetrahydropyran ring) to generate promising “lead-like” candidates, which were subsequently compared against reported anticancer compounds. Our synthesized compounds demonstrated significant antiproliferative activity when compared with the standards cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil, across a panel of six different tumor cell lines. Moreover, compared with our group's previous hybrid compounds, these new structures exhibit similar activity while offering simpler synthesis and greater potential for structural diversification, a fact that was previously an issue. Further investigations on the most active compounds included assessments of reproductive cell survival, inhibition of cell migration, and effects on nuclear morphology, indicating potential diverse mechanisms of action for these compounds. Pharmacokinetic properties were also calculated for the whole series of compounds using the pkCSM online software.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The integration of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) into magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) offers significant potential for advancing molecular spintronics, particularly for next-generation memory devices, quantum computing, and energy storage technologies such as solar cells. In this study, we present the first demonstration of SMM-induced spin-dependent properties in an antiferromagnet-based MTJ molecular spintronic device (MTJMSD). We engineered cross-junction-shaped devices comprising FeMn/AlOx/NiFe MTJs. The AlOx barrier thickness where the exposed junction edges meet was comparable to the SMM length, facilitating the incorporation of SMM molecules as spin channels for spin-dependent transport. The SMM channels enabled long-range magnetic moment ordering around molecular junctions, which were precisely engineered via fabrication processes. The SMM, composed of a [Mn6(μ3-O)2(H2N-sao)6(6-atha)2(EtOH)6] (H2N-saoH = salicylamidoxime, 6-atha = 6-acetylthiohexanoate) complex, featured thioester groups at the ends that upon hydrolysis they form bonds with the magnetic electrodes. SMMtreated junctions demonstrated a significant current enhancement, reaching up to 7 μA at an input voltage of 60 mV. Furthermore, SMM-doped junctions exhibited current stabilization in the μA range at lower temperatures, whereas the bare electrodes showed current suppression to the picoampere range. Magnetization
measurements conducted at 55 K and 300 K on pillar-shaped devices revealed a reduction in magnetic moment at low temperatures. Additionally, Kelvin probe atomic force microscopy (KPAFM) measurements confirmed that SMM integration transformed the electronic properties over long ranges. These findings are attributed to the spin channels formed between magnetic metal electrodes, which enhance spin polarization at each magnetic electrode. Our research highlights the potential of using antiferromagnetic materials, characterized by minimal stray fields and zero net magnetization, to transform MTJMSD devices.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Fluoride in drinking water has beneficial or harmful health effects depending on its concentration. This highlights the need for new low-cost and portable sensors capable of in situ monitoring of F− ions. Unfortunately, achieving high levels of water compatibility and fluoride specificity remains a challenge. Here, four new urea-based discrete sensors are prepared and characterized. The sensors containing anthracenyl- (5) and 9H-fluorenyl- (7) signaling units exhibit intense luminescent emissions in dimethyl sulfoxide, the former being particularly sensitive and selective to fluoride. In water, 5 displays a superior sensitivity (871 M−1) and a detection limit (8 μm) below international guidelines, albeit with cross-sensitivity to H2PO4‾. To enhance the performance, 5 and 7 are embedded into a fluoride-imprinted polymeric matrix to give solid-state sensors (5P and 7P, respectively). 5P shows good sensitivity (360 M−1) and specificity in water. Besides, it has a low detection limit (35 μm) and a response linear range (118–6300 μm) encompassing the limit established by the Environmental Protection Agency (211 μm). Furthermore, 5P also displays good reusability and adequate recovery values in real-sample testing (102 ± 2%), constituting the first example of a low-cost anion-imprinted polymeric probe tailored for the selective sensing of fluoride in aqueous samples.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>This research analyzes the thermal and kinetic behavior of the combustion of hydrochar obtained industrially from green waste biomass. The combustion kinetic analysis was studied using thermogravimetry and applying complementary methods such as Friedman’s isoconversional analysis, mathematical deconvolution, combined kinetic analysis, and optimization by nonlinear regression of the kinetic curves. The process involves two overlapping steps: the organic compounds devolatilization and the oxidation of fixed carbon. For steps 1 and 2, the apparent activation energies were 178.5 and 183.1 kJ mol− 1, while the apparent ln(A∕s−1) were 31.2 and 30.0, respectively. The truncated Šesták–Berggren model was used as a surrogate for distributed reactivity, resulting in n1 = 1.37 and m1 = −0.54 for step 1, and n2 = 3.31 and m2 = 0.496 for step 2. In step 1, the m < 0 serves as a surrogate for an activation energy distribution, while in step 2, the value of n > 1 would substitute a gamma distribution of frequency factors. Finally, the obtained kinetic model allows successful predictions of thermal programs outside the range of the analysis.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Wet-mixing processes can be tuned to reduce energy consumption, although impacts on quality and stability should be addressed. This work evaluated the effect of wet-mix processing (total solids, TS: 50 or 60%; heat treatment: 75 or 100 C 18 s) and storage conditions (open package: 25 C, 58% RH, 4 weeks; closed package: 25 C, multilayer bag, 12 weeks) on the physicochemical stability and digestibility of infant formulas. Processing significantly influenced the physicochemical characteristics of the powders, with TS exerting a stronger impact than heat treatment. Powders produced from 60% TS wet mixes presented the fastest water sorption, which accelerated lactose crystallisation and fat liberation. Formulas in closed packages were stable for 12 weeks. While lactose crystallised before week 2 in openpackage storage, inducing major physical changes, only limited effects were observed on digestibility. These findings provide valuable insights to ensure consistent quality during shelf-life of infant formula.</dcterms:abstract>

By the hydrotreatment of the produced samples in a batch reactor at 100 bar and 350 ◦C, using Pd/Al2O3 as catalyst, they were converted to hydrocarbons with an efficiency over 95.5 %, regardless their oxidation degree. The chain length distribution of the hydrocarbon indicated that oil conversion took place preferentially through hydrodecarboxylation or hydrodecarbonylation or both combined, instead hydrodeoxigenation. Although the increase in the oxidation degree of the starting oil did not show any significant effect on the hydrocarbon yield, an enhanced effect on cracking was verified, suggesting that oxidized fatty acid chains were more vulnerable to be fractionated. Although all the products showed distillation curves similar to gasoil and over 85.5 % distilled within the diesel range, they reached 95 % distillate above the recommended temperature of 360 ◦C. Thus, they must be previously fractionated to be used as diesel fuels. Results demonstrate the convenience of the performed process for efficiently converting used cooking oils of different qualities to second-generation biogasoil.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Thyroid hormones influence mammary gland differentiation and lactation by binding to thyroid hormone receptors. Hyperthyroidism disrupts pregnancy and lactation, affecting offspring growth and milk production. Despite maternal milk is a vital source of bioactive compounds and nutrients for newborns, it is unclear whether hyperthyroidism alters its composition, mainly immune factors. Therefore, our work aimed to evaluate the influence of hyperthyroidism on milk quality and immunological parameters during early lactation. Twelve-weekold female Wistar rats received daily injections of 0,25 mg/kg T4 (HyperT, n = 20) or vehicle (control, n = 19) starting 8 days before mating and continuing throughout pregnancy. Rats were euthanized on day 2 of lactation for analyzing the impact of hyperthyroidism on mammary gland, serum and milk samples. HyperT pups exhibited reduced weight, length and head circumference with altered serum hormones, glucose and albumin levels. HyperT mammary gland analysis revealed structural changes, including decreased alveolar area, adipose tissue, increased connective tissue and reduced epithelial elongation, accompanied by decreased TRβ1 RNA expression. HyperT milk displayed lower caloric value and fat concentration. HyperT animals exhibited altered milk immune cell counts, displaying increased numbers of CD45+ and CD3+ cells and decreased CD11b/c+ cells without changes on milk and serum IgA, IgG and IgG2a levels. In summary, we have demonstrated that hyperthyroidism affects mammary gland morphology, disrupts pup development and alters biochemical and immunological parameters. Our findings highlight the impact of maternal hyperthyroidism on offspring early development and milk immune composition, underscoring the importance of thyroid function in maternal and neonatal immune health.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Increasing the effectiveness of vaccines against respiratory viruses is particularly relevant for the elderly, since they are prone to develop serious infections due to comorbidities and the senescence of the immune system. The addition of saponin-based adjuvants is an interesting strategy to increase the effectiveness of vaccines. We have previously shown that ISCOM matrices from Q. brasiliensis (IMXQB) are a safe and potent adjuvant. In this study, we evaluated the use of IMXQB as an adjuvant for the seasonal trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV) in an aged mice model. Herein, we show that subcutaneous injection of the adjuvanted vaccine promoted higher titers of IgM, IgG (and isotypes), and serum hemagglutination inhibition titers (HAI). Notably, aged mice immunized by intranasal route also produced higher IgG (and isotypes) and IgA titers up to 120 days after priming, as well as demonstrating an improvement in the HAI antibodies against the TIV. Further, experimental infected aged mice treated once with sera from adult naïve mice previously immunized with TIV-IMXQB subcutaneously successfully controlled the infection. Overall, TIV-IMXQB improved the immunogenicity compared to TIV by enhancing systemic and mucosal immunity in old mice conferring a faster recovery after the H1N1pdm09-like virus challenge. Thus, IMXQB nanoparticles may be a promising platform for next-generation viral vaccines.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The immunoregulatory cation channel TMEM176B plays a dual role in tumor immunity. On the one hand, TMEM176B promotes antigen cross-presentation to CD8+ T cells by regulating phagosomal pH in dendritic cells (DCs). On the other hand, it inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome activation through ionic mechanisms in DCs, monocytes and macrophages. We speculated that formulating BayK8644 in PEGylated chitosan nanoparticles (NP-PEG-BayK8644) should slowly release the compound and by that mean avoid cross-presentation inhibition (which happens with a fast 30 min kinetics) while still triggering inflammasome activation. Chitosan nanocarriers were successfully obtained, exhibiting a particle size within the range of 200 nm; they had a high positive surface charge and a 99 % encapsulation efficiency. In in vitro studies, NP-PEG-BayK8644 did not inhibit antigen cross-presentation by DCs, unlike the free compound. The NP-PEG-BayK8644 activated the inflammasome in a Tmem176b-dependent manner in DCs. We administered either empty (eNP-PEG) or NP-PEGBayK8644 to mice with established tumors. NP-PEG-BayK8644 significantly controlled tumor growth and improved mice survival compared to both eNP-PEG and free BayK8644 in melanoma and lymphoma models. This effect was associated with enhanced inflammasome activation by DCs in the tumor-draining lymph node and infiltration of the tumor by CD8+ T cells. Thus, encapsulation of BayK8644 in chitosan NPs improves the anti-tumoral properties of the compound by avoiding inhibition of antigen cross-presentation.</dcterms:abstract>

It is relevant to theoretically study the (100) nanosheet of this material since there are no studies regarding intercalation of Li/ Na/K in it. Density Functional Theory calculations with the Hubbard methodology (DFT + U) were conducted in order to find and test several intercalation sites for the three different metals, finding stability and high voltages in all of them. Moreover, the electronic density of states confirms the stability of the systems and charge transfer studies were performed to compare the electron transfer between the most stable sites of each intercalated metal and the surface. Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) calculations were performed, finding lower barriers of 0.54 eV and 0.41 eV for Li and Na diffusion. This study shows that this material is promising and can be a guide for future works.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Cystic echinococcosis is caused by the tissue-dwelling larva (hydatid) of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. A salient feature is that this larva is protected by the acellular laminated layer (LL). As the parasite grows, the LL sheds abundant particles that can accumulate in the parasite's vicinity. The potential of LL particles to induce inflammation in vivo has not been specifically analysed. It is not known how each of its two major components, namely highly glycosylated mucins and calcium inositol hexakisphosphate (InsP6) deposits, impacts inflammation induced by the LL as a whole. In this work, we show that LL particles injected intraperitoneally cause infiltration of eosinophils, neutrophils and monocytes/macrophages as well as the disappearance of resident (large peritoneal) macrophages. Strikingly, the absence of calcium InsP6 enhanced the recruitment of all the inflammatory cell types analysed. In contrast, oxidation of the mucin carbohydrates caused decreased recruitment of neutrophils. The carbohydrate-oxidised particles caused cell influx nonetheless, which may be explained by possible receptor-independent effects of LL particles on innate immune cells, as suggested by previous works from our group. In summary, LL particles can induce acute inflammatory cell recruitment partly dependent on its mucin glycans, and this recruitment is attenuated by the calcium InsP6 component.</dcterms:abstract>
