<dcterms:abstract>Fungal decay, predominantly caused by Penicillium expansum, is the main cause of apple postharvest losses. To overcome this problem, synthetic fungicides are applied to fruit before storage. Public concern about this practice has raised interest in developing alternative biocontrol strategies for postharvest diseases. Debaryomyces hansenii F9D, a psychrotrophic Antarctic yeast, has been previously selected as a promising biocontrol agent due to its ability to reduce blue mold incidence in apples and pears. Previous in vitro studies indicated that the biocontrol mechanism of this yeast does not involve the production of antifungal metabolites or other inhibitory or competitive interactions with the pathogen. In this work, we conducted further studies in order to understand the interaction between Penicillium expansum and D. hansenii F9D within apple wounds. The growth of both mi croorganisms in apple wounds during cold storage was followed over time by q-PCR and viable cell counts. Scanning electron microscopy observations of co-inoculated and control wounds (inoculated only with the yeast or with the pathogen) were conducted to evaluate if the pathogen conidia could germinate in presence of the yeast and to determine the colonization patterns of P. expansum and the biocontrol yeast. Our results indicate that Debaryomyces hansenii F9D is able to prevent cold stored apples’ wounds rot by inhibiting the virulence factors produced by the pathogen without impeding its growth. These findings provide circumstantial evidence for a new biocontrol mechanism associated with the prevention of fungal decay in apples by biocontrol yeasts during cold storage of fruit.</dcterms:abstract>

Nutritional warning labels aim at highlighting products with excessive content of nutrients associated with noncommunicable diseases. The aim of the present narrative review is to summarize the evidence about the effects of nutritional warning labels on consumer perception and behavior, both before and after policy implementation. The existing evidence suggests that this FOP nutrition labeling increases consumer ability to interpret nutritional information and discourages the choice of unhealthy products. Further research is needed to better understand the effect of warning label policies on food choices and long-term population health as well as product reformulation.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The larval stages of the cestode parasites belonging to the genus Echinococcus grow within internal organs of humans and a range of animal species. The resulting diseases, collectively termed echinococcoses, include major neglected tropical diseases of humans and livestock. Echinococcus larvae are outwardly protected by the laminated layer (LL), an acellular structure that is unique to this genus. The LL is based on a fibrillar meshwork made up of mucins, which are decorated by galactose-rich O-glycans. In addition, in the spe cies cluster termed E. granulosus sensu lato, the LL features nano-deposits of the calcium salt of myo-inositol hexakisphosphate (Insp6 ). The main purpose of our article is to update the immunobiology of the LL. Major recent advances in this area are (i) the demonstra tion of LL “debris” at the infection site and draining lymph nodes, (ii) the characterization of the decoy activity of calcium Insp6 with respect to complement, (iii) the evidence that the LL mucin carbohydrates interact specifically with a lectin receptor expressed in Kupffer cells (Clec4F), and (iv) the characterization of what appear to be receptor-independent effects of LL particles on dendritic cells and macrophages. Much information is missing on the immunology of this intriguing structure: we discuss gaps in knowledge and propose possible avenues for research.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>We studied the structure, stability and electronic propierties of bilayer graphene when both layers are doped with a pair of 3p-2p elements. The interlayer interaction energy of codoped bilayer graphene can be fine-tuned by changing the dopants. Al/B codoped bilayer graphene presents the strongest stacking, almost twice the value determined for the undoped materials. In five cases, the interaction is weaker than in bilayer graphene. Interlayer covalent bonds form only in six cases; P/O codoped bilayer graphene presents the largest interlayer distance: 3.97 Å, about 0.72 Å longer than the value determined for undoped-bilayer graphene. In four cases, we observed that a semiconductor-to-metal transition occurs when two layers are stacked. For the remaining cases except P/N codoped bilayer graphene, the band gaps are reduced with respect to the values computed for the codoped monolayers. Controlling the number of layers is an exciting approach to fine-tune the band gap of codoped graphene.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>An alternative to mitigate the consumption of fossil fuels is the use of biomass as an energy source. In this sense, the rural sector in Latin America has great potential due to its multiple biomass sources. For this reason, this study aims to analyze potential technologies related to the production of energy from biomass and its application in the Latin American rural sector. To achieve this, four key processes are analyzed. First is biomass conditioning through solar dryers. Next are the thermochemical processes that allow for their transformation into biofuels, for which the pyrolysis and the hydrothermal methods were selected due to the flexibility of the products obtained. Subsequently, cogeneration is studied to produce electrical and thermal energy from biomass or its derivatives. Finally, to close the CO2 cycle, a balance of CO2 fixation in a forest plantation is presented as an example of carbon accumulated in biomass. The literature systematic review allowed us to determine that the technologies mentioned in this work have different degrees of implementation in the Latin American rural sector. However, they have great potential to be applied on a large scale in the region, making it possible to adapt energy production to climate change and improve the life quality of its inhabitants.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Zika virus has spread around the world with rapid pace in the last five years. Although symptoms are typically mild and unspecific, Zika’s major impact occurs during pregnancy, generating a congenital syndrome. Serology plays a key role in its diagnosis. However, its use is limited due to the uncertainty caused by the cross-reaction of antibodies elicited in response to other flavivirus infections when tested in direct immunoassays. Using a panel of previously generated anti-Zika non-structural protein 1 (NS1) nanobodies, a set was selected that only recognizes epitopes present in Zika and is immunogenic to humans. A proper arrangement of these nanobodies was made and conditions were optimized in order to develop a novel serology assay. This new ELISA relies on the inhibition of the binding of a set of selected nanobodies to Zika-immobilized NS1 when previously incubated with Zika convalescent sera. Using the developed blocking of binding assay, it was possible to discriminate between Zika-specific and cross-reactive antibodies in serum samples from infections with Zika and other flaviviruses</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>With the objective to develop a potential 99mTc radiopharmaceutical for imaging the androgen receptor (AR) in prostate cancer, four ligands bearing the same pharmacophore derived from the AR antagonist flutamide were prepared, labeled with 99mTc, and their structures corroborated via comparison with the corresponding stable rhenium analogs. All complexes were obtained with high radiochemical purity. Three of the complexes were highly stable, and, due to their favorable physicochemical properties, were further evaluated using AR-positive and AR-negative cells in culture. All complexes exhibited considerable uptake in AR-positive cells, which could be blocked by an excess of flutamide. The efflux from the cells was moderate. They also showed significantly lower uptakes in AR-negative cells, indicating interactions with the AR receptor. However, the binding affinities were considerably reduced by the coordination to 99mTc, and the complex that exhibited the best biological behavior did not show sufficient specificity towards AR-positive cells.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>In this study, two adamantane-linked isothiourea derivatives containing a common 4-chlorophenyl substituent coupled with 4-nitrobenzyl or 4-bromobenzyl moieties were synthesized. Both derivatives were characterized, in the solid state and in solution, through a synergistic combination of experimental and in silico techniques, and the results are of great value for the chemical and structural characterization of related compounds. The crystal structures of both derivatives were analyzed in depth, including Hirshfeld surface analysis and lattice energy calculations, revealing a predominant dispersive component of the total energy that stabilizes crystal packing. Both compounds showed potent broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and moderate activity against the pathogenic fungus Candida albicans. In addition, in vitro anti-proliferative activity assays showed that the 4-bromobenzyl analogue displays higher activity than the 4-nitrobenzyl one, with IC50 values under 30 μM against five human cancer cell lines. <dcterms:abstract>The reactivity of alkali–manganese(II) and alkali trifluoroacetates towards amorphous SiO2 (a-SiO2) was studied in the solid-state. K4Mn2(tfa)8, Cs3Mn2(tfa)7(tfaH), KH(tfa)2, and CsH(tfa)2 (tfa = CF3COO–) were thermally decomposed under vacuum in fused quartz tubes. Three new bimetallic fluorotrifluoroacetates of formulas K4Mn3(tfa)9F, Cs4Mn3(tfa)9F, and K2Mn(tfa)3F were discovered upon thermolysis at 175 °C. K4Mn3(tfa)9F and Cs4Mn3(tfa)9F feature a triangular-bridged metal cluster of formula [Mn3(μ3-F)(μ2- tfa)6(tfa)3]4−. In the case of K2Mn(tfa)3F, fluoride serves as an inverse coordination center for the tetra hedral metal cluster K2Mn2(μ4-F). Fluorotrifluoroacetates may be regarded as intermediates in the trans formation of bimetallic trifluoroacetates to fluoroperovskites KMnF3, CsMnF3, and Cs2MnF4, which crystal lized between 250 and 600 °C. Decomposition of these trifluoroacetates also yielded alkali hexafluorosili cates K2SiF6 and Cs2SiF6 as a result of the fluorination of fused quartz. The ability to fluorinate fused quartz was observed for monometallic alkali trifluoroacetates as well. Hexafluorosilicates and heptafluoro silicates K3SiF7 and Cs3SiF7 were obtained upon thermolysis of KH(tfa)2 and CsH(tfa)2 between 200 and 400 °C. This ability was exploited to synthesize fluorosilicates under air by simply reacting alkali trifluoroa cetates with a-SiO2 powder.</dcterms:abstract>

These cis-diols are valuable chiral building blocks, as they are enantiomerically pure, possessing good accessibility and high chemical versatility. Our work covers enzymatic and chemical aspects of the biotransforma tion, as well as synthetic applications of the resulting cis-diols. We optimized the biotransformation procedure, described a computational model of TDO, designed new mutants, identified new metabolites, and disclosed new reactions of the Rieske dioxygenases. Also, the reactivity of the cis-diol core was studied, with an emphasis in addition reactions, such as cycloadditions, osmylations, and electrophilic addi tions. Preparation of building blocks and bioactive natural products is described from the synthetic point of view, mostly concerning cyclitols, carbasugars, acetogenin and carbohy drates.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>This chapter introduces a simple and robust in vitro viability assay to screen bioactive small molecules (e.g., natural, synthetic) against the monomorphic and infective (bloodstream) form of Trypanosoma brucei brucei. The assay relies on a bioluminescent transgenic parasite harboring a genetically encoded copy of a thermostable redshifted firefly luciferase from Photinus pyralis. The major advantages of the assay are simplicity and cost efficiency, along with excellent quality parameters. The bioassay allows estimating parasite numbers and viability (and metabolic state) as a function of bioluminescence (BL) signal. Parasites are grown in the presence of the molecules of interest in a 96-well microplate, and 24 h later, BL is determined with a simple protocol lacking washing steps, using cost-efficient reagents with a reasonable readout time for high-throughput applications.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Luminescence is the most exploited phenomena for chemosensing. Real-time measurements must be accurate and reproducible along cycles for the selection of the best sensing materials. At the same time, sample degra dation by excitation-light irradiation must be kept minimal. Last but not least, expensive equipment should be avoided, whenever possible. In this work, we present a low-cost in-situ luminescence measuring experimental array designed for solid-state sensing of vapors. It allows repeated activation and subsequent guest entrance along many measuring cycles. A common halogen lamp is used as heating element for the activation of the sample under vacuum in a sealed aluminium chamber. Then, vapor guest molecules are forced into the chamber by a laboratory vacuum pump. Luminescence is LED-excited and measured by a portable reflectance probe connected to a miniature spectrometer. The chosen case study is a luminescent polycrystalline metal-organic framework composed by europium(III), zinc(II) and oxydiacetate ligand. This compound has a honeycomb porous structure that can be repeatedly activated and rehydrated. The associated structural distortion is accompanied by a remarkable variation in the luminescence profile with minimal chemical degradation or crystallinity loss. Results are analyzed and critically compared to those obtained by conventional luminescence. They show that, while conventional luminescence struggles to provide reproducible absolute results, the pre sented method stands as a simple, robust and trustworthy approach, in which accurate and reproducible in-situ data can be obtained along many cycles. Furthermore, the presented experimental array comparatively mini mizes the light-induced degradation of the tested materials. The effect of glue-immobilizing the sample is also addressed using the presented method.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Opportunistic infections are a problem of great relevance in public health and the precise detection and localization of infection in the early stages of the dis ease is of great importance for patient management as well as cost containment. Our proposal seeks to contribute to developing a new agent that meets the needs of diagnosis and follow-up of fungal and bacterial infections, focused on the de sign of a radiotracer with the potential for recognition of hidden infection foci. Defensins are plant antimicrobial peptides that not only show activity against plant pathogens but also against human ones. A short analogue of EcgDf1 de fensin, EcgDf21d (NH2-ERFTGGHCRGFRRRCFCTKHC-COOH), was labelled through the formation of a 99mTc-HYNIC complex which was assessed for phys icochemical and biological behaviour both in vitro and in vivo. The [99mTc]Tc HYNIC-EcgDf21 labelling procedure rendered a single product with remarkably high RCP and stability in the labelling milieu. The Log p value indicated that [ 99mTc]Tc-HYNIC-EcgDf21 has a hydrophilic behaviour, confirmed by the biodis tribution profiles. The optimal uptake value was obtained for Candida albicans infection model reaching a lesion/muscle ratio of 3, this correlates with in vitro binding studies, and the lesion can be definitely observed in the scintigraphic images.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Research on behavioral and social science has demonstrated that transitions throughout a person’s life course, as the life event of becoming a parent, represent an opportunity for dietary changes. However, research in this area has been mostly restricted to developed European and North American countries and has shown ambiguous results. The present work aimed to gain an in-depth understanding on the changes in eating habits caused by the transition to parenthood and to explore factors influencing those changes in Uruguay, a Latin American country. Forty-two in-depth interviews with Uruguayan parents from diverse social-economic backgrounds were conducted. The narrations by the interviewees evidenced mostly positive changes during three stages in the transition: pregnancy, the first months with the baby, and the beginning of complementary feeding. Most informants perceived changes mainly in terms of increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, and pulses; increased consumption of homemade meals; and decreased consumption of ultra-processed foods, fast foods, and fried foods. Reasons for these changes included adaptation of meals to the child’s needs and schedule, feeling of responsibility for the child’s health, and willingness to be a good role model. Factors influencing changes in eating habits were identified in some levels of the socioecological model and included socioeconomic status; price of fruits, vegetables, and fish; low accessibility of good quality fish; perceived time pressure; father’s low interest on healthy eating; social support; and access to nutrition information. Findings suggest that parenthood represents a window of opportunity for favorable changes in eating habits. However, barriers constraining those changes should be addressed by stakeholders.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The synthesis of cyclotetrapeptides analogues of the natural products tentoxin and versi cotide D was achieved in good yield by solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) of their linear precursors and solution phase cyclization. All the cyclopeptides and several open precursors were evaluated as herbicides. Five cyclopeptides and five lineal peptides showed a significant inhibition (>70%) of Ryegrass seed’s radicle growth at 67 µg/mL. The evaluation at lower concentrations (4–11 µM) indi cates two cyclopeptides analogs of tentoxin, which present one (N-Methyl-D-Phe), and two N-MeAA (N-Methyl-Ala and N-Methyl-Phe), respectively, as the most active of them, showing remarkable phytotoxic activity. In two cases, the open precursors are as active as their corresponding cyclopeptide. However, many linear peptides are inactive and their cyclization derivatives showed herbicidal activ ity. In addition, two cyclopeptide analogues of versicotide D showed more improved activity than the natural product. The results indicate that the peptide sequence, the amino acid stereochemistry and the presence of N-methyl group have important influence on the phytotoxic activity. Moreover, several compounds could be considered as lead candidates in the development of bioherbicides</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) and leishmaniasis are prevalent zoonotic diseases caused by genomically related trypanosomatid protozoan parasites (Trypanosoma brucei and Leishmania spp). Additionally, both are co-endemic in certain regions of the world. Only a small number of old drugs exist for their treatment, with most of them sharing poor safety, efficacy, and pharmacokinetic profiles. In this work, new multifunctional Ru(II) ferrocenyl compounds were rationally designed as potential agents against these trypanosomatid parasites by including in a single molecule 1,1′ -bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) and two bioactive bidentate li gands: 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives (8HQs) and polypyridyl ligands (NN). Three [Ru(8HQs)(dppf)(NN)](PF6) compounds were synthesized and fully characterized. They showed in vitro activity on bloodstream Trypanosoma brucei (IC50 140–310 nM) and on Leishmania infantum promastigotes (IC50 3.0–4.8 μM). The compounds showed good selectivity towards T. brucei in respect to J774 murine macrophages as mammalian cell model (SI 15–38). Changing hexafluorophosphate counterion by chloride led to a three-fold increase in activity on both parasites and to a two to three-fold increase in selectivity towards the pathogens. The compounds affect in vitro at least the targets of the individual bioactive moieties included in the new chemical entities: DNA and generation of ROS. The compounds are stable in solution and are more lipophilic than the free bioactive ligands. No clear correlation between lipophilicity, interaction with DNA or generation of ROS and activity was detected, which agrees with their overall similar anti-trypanosoma potency and selectivity. These compounds are promising candidates for further drug development.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Microbial agents exert their biocontrol effects through different mechanisms of action. Clavispora lusitaniae AgL21, a yeast capable of controlling postharvest diseases in lemon, produces volatile organic compounds (VOCs) impairing phytopathogenic fungi. Here we elucidate the nature of such compounds and check individual effects on mycelial growth of citrus fungal pathogens: Penicillium digitatum, Penicillium italicum, and Geotrichum citri-aurantii. VOCs characterization was carried out deploying solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography mass spectrum techniques. Among the compounds produced by C. lusitaniae AgL21, ethyl acetate, isoamyl ac etate, 3-methyl butanol, and phenethyl alcohol displayed the highest relative abundance. Synthetic ethyl acetate, tested in vitro on P. digitatum, had no discernable effect on mycelial growth, whereas isoamyl acetate and both of the above alcohols exhibited fungistatic and fungicidal effects, respectively. The data provided in this study prove for the first time, that VOCs released by C. lusitaniae AgL21 are able to take part in antagonistic activities against citrus postharvest fungal pathogens.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Background: Vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has pro ven to be a successful strategy for prevent severe infections. CoronaVac and BNT162b2 are the most used vaccines worldwide, but their use in heterologous vaccination schedules is still subjected to evaluation. Methods: Fifty healthy individuals who received heterologous prime-boost vaccination with CoronaVac and BNT162b2 were enrolled in a post-vaccination serological follow-up longitudinal prospective study. We evaluated specific serum anti-receptor binding domain (RBD) IgG antibody levels, and their capacity to block RBD-ACE2 interaction with a surrogate neutralization assay. In 20 participants, we assessed anti body binding kinetics by surface plasmon resonance, and Fc-mediated functions by ADCC and ADCP reporter assays. Results: Our baseline seronegative cohort, displayed seroconversion after two doses of CoronaVac and an important decrease in serum anti-RBD IgG antibodies levels 80 days post-second dose. These levels increased significantly early after the third dose with BNT162b2, but 73 days after the booster we found a new fall. Immunoglobulin functionalities showed a similar behavior. Conclusions: The heterologous prime-boost vaccination with CoronaVac and BNT162b2 generated an impressive increase in serum anti-RBD specific antibody levels followed by a drop. Nevertheless, these titers remained well above those found in individuals only vaccinated with CoronaVac in the same elapsed time. Serum IgG levels showed high correlation with antibody binding analysis, their capacity to block RBD-ACE2 interaction, and Fc-effectors mechanisms. Our work sheds light on the humoral immune response to heterologous vaccination with CoronaVac and BNT162b2, to define a post vaccination correlate of protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection and to discuss the scheduling of future vaccine boosters in general population.</dcterms:abstract>

Our results indicated that helicenes experience significant structural distortions when adsorbed on the title monolayer. The strong interaction with the surfaces can partially over come the steric repulsions of helicenes. Although the characteristics of the surfaces considered are very different, the adsorption energies computed for graphene, BN, and graphane are comparable. <dcterms:abstract>Biomass-derived chemical platforms such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) can offer straight forward access to new value-added products. The presence of an aldehyde and hydroxymethyl functional groups in this molecule are interesting structural motifs to explore the synthesis of new bioactive compounds. In this contribution, a strategy to quickly and efficiently synthesize nitro vinylfurans starting from 5-HMF under greener conditions is described and the antiproliferative activity of the synthesized compounds evaluated. 5-HMF obtained by microwave-assisted satu rated biphasic dehydration from fructose was used to produce furaldehyde derivatives. Next, through a nitroaldolic condensation, the desired nitrovinylfurans were generated using efficient heating sources, ultrasound, or a non-microwave instant heating reactor, under solvent-free con ditions. Most of the newly synthesized compounds showed growth inhibition when assayed for their in vitro antiproliferative activity against six cancer cell lines (A549, HBL-100, HeLa, SW1573, T-47D, and WiDr), with lower toxicity on the human macrophage-like cells (THP-1). Our strategy allowed the rapid identification of nitrovinylfurans 16, 17, 19, and 20 as future can didates for the development of new selective anticancer drugs.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>This work studied ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE) as a green chemistry technique to improve aqueous extraction of bioactive compounds from marcela (Achyrocline satureioides Lam.), a native plant from South America with reported beneficial health effects. Dried intact marcela inflorescences were extracted using solely water as solvent in an ultrasonic bath, applying 100 and 150 W/L ultrasound power at 40 and 60 °C, respectively. Extraction was followed throughout 30 min by determining antioxidant capacity (AOC) and total polyphenol content (TPC) every 5 min. Extracts were analysed by LC-MS and LC-DAD to identify extracted bioactive compounds and analyse the impact of temperature and ultrasound application on compound profile. Solidliquid extraction at 40 and 60 °C and maceration at room temperature were studied as reference extraction methods. UAE extracts were higher in AOC by 140% and 25% at 40 and 60 °C respectively, compared to solid-liquid extraction. For TPC, UAE showed an increase of 110% and 20% at 40 and 60 °C, respectively. LC results indicated that ultrasound application allowed faster and enhanced hydroxycinnamic acids extraction, whereas an increase in temperature resulted in a more diverse compound profile. UAE could be used to extract caffeic acid when applied at 40 °C.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Forestry and agricultural industries constitute highly relevant economic activities globally. They generate large amounts of residues rich in lignocellulose that have the potential to be valorized and used in different industrial processes. Producing renewable fuels and high-value-added compounds from lignocellulosic biomass is a key aspect of sustainable strategies and is central to the biorefinery concept. In this study, the use of biomass-derived monosaccharides for the enzymatic synthesis of sugar fatty acid esters (SFAEs) with antimicrobial activity was investigated to valorize these agro-industrial residues. With the aim to evaluate if lignocellulosic monosaccharides could be substrates for the synthesis of SFAEs, D-xylose, L-arabinose, and D-glucose, lauroyl and stearoyl monoesters were synthetized by transesterification reactions catalyzed by Lipozyme RM IM as biocatalyst. The reactions were performed using commercial D-xylose, L-arabinose, and D-glucose separately as substrates, and a 74:13:13 mixture of these sugars. The proportion of monosaccharides in the latter mixture corresponds to the composition found in hemicellulose from sugarcane bagasse
and switchgrass, as previously described in the literature. Products were characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and showed that only the primary hydroxyl group of these monosaccharides is involved in the esterification reaction. Antimicrobial activity assay using
several microorganisms showed that 5-O-lauroyl-D-xylofuranose and 5-O-lauroyl-L-arabinofuranose have the ability to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria separately and in the products mix. Furthermore, 5-O-lauroyl-L-arabinofuranose was the only product that exhibited activity against Candida albicans yeast, and the four tested filamentous fungi. These results suggest that sugar fatty acid esters obtained from sustainable and renewable resources and produced by green methods are promising antimicrobial agents.</dcterms:abstract>
