<dcterms:abstract>1,10-Phenanthroline, phen, is a molecule with a wide variety of chemical and biological activities, being interesting from a pharmacological standpoint. Its metal complexes have been extensively studied during the last century. Considering the vast applications of phen and its metallic complexes for the development of potential metallodrugs, it becomes of utmost importance to study the molecule’s interaction with diferent molecular targets. So far, in-depth analyses of phen and metal–phen complexes’ interaction with DNA are abundant. Nevertheless, little has been reported on the interaction of this molecule with the frst molecular “target” that it fnds in the cell, the lipid membrane. Here, we present the characterization of the interaction of the phen molecule with model membranes of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) or 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1′-rac-glycerol) (sodium salt) (DPPG) using a combination of diferential scan ning calorimetry and molecular dynamics simulations. Our results indicate that phen difuses into the membranes, being stabilized around the middle of the hydrocarbon chains in DPPC, while in DPPG, it is placed near the center of the bilayer.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>A recent screen of 67,012 compounds identified a new family of compounds with excellent nematicidal activity: the ortho-substituted benzamide families Wact-11 and Wact-12. These com pounds are active against Caenorhabditis elegans and parasitic nematodes by selectively inhibiting nematode complex II, and they display low toxicity in mammalian cells and vertebrate organisms. Although a big number of benzamides were tested against C. elegans in high-throughput screens, bioisosteres of the amide moiety were not represented in the chemical space examined. We thus iden tified an opportunity for the design, synthesis and evaluation of novel compounds, using bioisosteric replacements of the amide group present in benzamides. The compound Wact-11 was used as the reference scaffold to prepare a set of bioisosteres to be evaluated against C. elegans. Eight types of amide replacement were selected, including ester, thioamide, selenoamide, sulfonamide, alkyl thio and oxo-amides, urea and triazole. The results allowed us to perform a structure–activity relationship, highlighting the relevance of the amide group for nematicide activity. Experimental evidence was complemented with in silico structural studies over a C. elegans complex II model as a molecular target of benzamides. Importantly, compound Wact-11 was active against the flatworm Echinococcus granulosus, suggesting a previously unreported pan-anthelmintic potential for benzamides.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Yeasts of the genus Hanseniaspora gained notoriety in the last years due to their contribution to wine quality, and their loss of several genes, mainly related to DNA repair and cell cycle processes. Based on genomic data from many members of this genus, they have been classified in two well defined clades: the “faster-evolving linage” (FEL) and the “slower-evolving lineage” (SEL). In this context, we had detected that H. vineae exhibited a rapid loss of cell viability in some conditions during the stationary phase compared to H. uvarum and S. cerevisiae. The present work aimed to evaluate the viability and cell cycle progression of representatives of Hanseniaspora species along their growth in an aerobic and discontinuous system. Cell growth, viability and DNA content were determined by turbidity, Trypan Blue staining, and flow cytometry, respectively. Results showed that H. uvarum and H. opuntiae (representing FEL group), and H. osmophila (SEL group) exhibited a typical G1/G0 (1C DNA) arrest during the stationary phase, as S. cerevisiae. Conversely, the three strains studied here of H. vineae (SEL group) arrested at G2/M stages of cell cycle (2C DNA), and lost viability rapidly when enter the stationary phase. These results showed that H. vineae have a unique cell cycle behavior that will contribute as a new eukaryotic model for future studies of genetic determinants of yeast cell cycle control and progression.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>An in-depth understanding of people’s experiences, beliefs and thoughts about cooking and homemade meals is essential for the design of a more effective discourse to encourage cooking from scratch. In this context, the objective of the present work was to explore the social representations of homemade meals and cooking. An online survey was conducted with 974 Uruguayan adults, recruited using an advertisement on Facebook. Participants were asked to write down the first words that came to their mind when thinking of homemade meals and cooking. Responses were coded into categories using inductive coding. The structure of the social representations was explored using the frequency of mention and rank of appearance of the categories. Results showed
that the social representations of homemade meals were largely consensual among participants and mainly related to pleasure, health, and wellbeing. However, the social representations of cooking did not have a clear structure, which raised diverse associations related to homemade foods, positive emotions but also to lack of convenience in terms of time and effort. Results suggest public campaigns aimed at encouraging people to cook from scratch should position cooking as enjoyable task and diminish perception of lack of time and effort association.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Governments worldwide are increasingly mandating the inclusion of graphic and textual warnings on the packages and advertisements of processed products with high content of nutrients associated with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of nutritional warnings on the mental associations raised by advertisements featuring ultra-processed products. An online experiment was performed with a convenience sample of 380 Uruguayan participants. Participants were exposed to either
control advertisements or advertisements featuring black octagonal nutritional warnings. Right after watching the advertisements, they were asked to complete a word association task. Responses were grouped into 20 categories following inductive coding. A generalized linear model was used to assess the effect of experimental condition on the likelihood of providing responses within each of the identified categories. Participants exposed to the advertisements with (vs. without) warnings were more likely to provide responses related to NCDs or nutritional warnings. Meanwhile, no significant differences were found in the frequency of mention of categories related to sensory, hedonic, emotional, or social aspects linked to consuming the products between participants
exposed to advertisements with and without warnings. These results suggest that nutritional warnings may be a promising strategy to make consumers aware of the nutritional characteristics of ultra-processed products without affecting the ability of advertisements to convey their intended message.</dcterms:abstract>

An analytical methodology was adjusted and validated for the analysis of 15 selected pesticides currently employed in extensive agriculture. The main application of this methodology is studying the pesticides degradation behavior using biobeds as a friendly environmental tool for the treatment of wastewaters generated in fields. The scope of the method was selected based on the most used pesticides in soybean crops in Uruguay. The novelty of this work is the inclusion of neutral and acidic herbicides such as 2,4-D, clethodim, dicamba, together with fungicides and insecticides which are usually included in Multi Residue Methods. An acetonitrile extraction methodology without a clean-up step yielded acceptable results for all the analytes. The instrumental analysis was performed using HPLC-MS/MS. The selected methodology was validated according to the SANTE guidelines. The recoveries were between 65 and 130% with RSD < 20%. The instrumental LOQs were fixed at 1 µg/L for all the compounds except for clethodim, and the method LOQs were 1 mg/kg in biomixture dry basis. These LOQs values are acceptable for biodegradation studies in biobeds.

First, we review the most relevant preparation techniques and the structural features of hybrid organic-inorganic materials prepared by solution-phase reaction of inorganic/organic precursor into organic/inorganic hosts and vapor-phase infiltration of the inorganic precursor into organic hosts and molecular layer deposition of organic precursor onto the inorganic surface. Particular emphasis is given to the advances in joint experimental and theoretical studies discussing diverse types of computational simulations for hybrid-organic materials and interfaces. We make a specific revision on the separately ionic, and electronic transport properties of these hybrid organic inorganic materials focusing mostly on interface phenomena. Finally, we deepen into mixed ionic-electronic transport properties and provide our concluding remarks and give some perspectives about this growing field of research.</dcterms:abstract>

Two compounds were isolated, and their structures elucidated using a combination of NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. One of these compounds is a previously undescribed triterpene saponin (Qb1), which is an isomer of QS-21, the unique adjuvant saponin employed in human vaccines. The other compound is a triterpene saponin previously isolated from Quillaja saponaria bark, known as S13. The structure of Qb1 consists of a quillaic acid residue substituted with a -D-Galp-(1!2)-[ -D-Xylp-(1!3)]- -D-GlcpA trisaccharide at C3, and a -D-Xylp-(1!4)- -L-Rhap-(1!2)-[ -L-Arap-(1!3)]- -D-Fucp moiety at C28. <dcterms:abstract>Global warming has a strong impact on polar regions. Particularly, the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands have experienced a marked warming trend in the past 50 years. Therefore, higher methane (CH4) emissions from this area could be expected in the future. Since mitigation of these emissions can be carried out by microbial oxidation, understanding this biological process is crucial since to our knowledge,no related studies have been performed in this area before. In this work, the aerobic CH4 oxidation potential of five freshwater lake sediments of Fildes Peninsula (King George Island, South Shetland Islands) was determined with values from 0.07 to 10 mmol CH4 gdw-1 day-1 and revealed up to 100-fold increase in temperature gradients (5, 10, 15, and 20C). The structure and diversity of the bacterial community in the sediments were analyzed by next-generation sequencing (Illumina MiSeq) of 16S rRNA and pmoA genes. A total of 4,836 ASVs were identified being Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, Acidobacteriota, and Bacteroidota the most abundant phyla. The analysis of the pmoA gene identified 200 ASVs of methanotrophs, being Methylobacter Clade 2 (Type I, family Methylococcaceae) the main responsible of the aerobic CH4 oxidation. Moreover, both approaches revealed the presence of methanotrophs of the classes Gammaproteobacteria (families Methylococcaceae and Crenotrichaceae), Alphaproteobacteria (family Methylocystaceae), Verrucomicrobia (family Methylacidiphilaceae), and the candidate phylum of anaerobic methanotrophs Methylomirabilota. In addition, bacterial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) biomarkers were studied as a proxy for aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria and confirmed these results. Methanotrophic bacterial diversity was significantly correlated with pH. In conclusion, our findings suggest that aerobic methanotrophs could mitigate in situ CH4 emissionsin a future scenario with higher temperatures in this climate-sensitive area. This study provides new insights into the diversity of methanotrophs, as well as the influence of
temperature on the CH4 oxidation potential in sediments of freshwater lakes in polar regions of the southern hemisphere.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>
Background: Helminthiasis and resistance to commercial anthelmintic compounds are major causes of economic
losses for livestock producers, resulting in an urgent need for new drugs and reliable in vitro screening tests capable
of detecting potentially active products. Considering this, a series of novel benzimidazole derivatives (5-methylbenzimidazole 1,2-disubstituted, 5-carboxybenzimidazole, 5-methylbenzimidazole 2-one) was screened on exsheathed L3 (xL3) and on the adult stage of Haemonchus contortus (Kirby anthelmintic-susceptible McMaster isolate).
Methods: This work presents the set-up of an automated motility assay on the xL3 stage of H. contortus using an
infrared tracking device (WMicrotracker One) together with a larval development test (xL3 to L4) and a motility assay
on the adult stage of H. contortus. A comparative study of the sensitivity of these in vitro assays using commercial
anthelmintics with different mechanisms of action was carried out, also evaluating anthelmintic activity of a series of
novel benzimidazole derivatives.
Results: The automated xL3 assay had the great advantage of being able to analyze many compounds simultaneously,
but it showed the limitation of having lower sensitivity, requiring higher concentrations of the commercial
anthelmintics tested compared to those needed for the adult motility or development assays. Although none of the
novel 1,2,5-tri-substituted benzimidazole derivatives could significantly decrease the motility of xL3s, one of them (1e)
significantly affected the development of xL3s to L4, and five new compounds (1b, 1d, 1e, 2a and 2c) reduced the
motility of H. contortus adult stage.
Conclusions: The analysis of the results strongly suggests that the in vitro xL3 to L4 development test, particularly
for the L4 stage, could be closer to the pharmacological sensitivity of the adult stage of H. contortus (target of interest)
for commercial anthelmintic selected, with different mechanisms of action, and for the series of benzimidazole
derivatives assayed. Therefore, an automated motility assay on L4 using the infrared tracking device is being set up.
Further studies will be conducted to evaluate the in vivo anthelmintic activity of the most active novel benzimidazole
derivatives.
</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Onion is among the most consumed vegetables in Uruguay, grown in the northwestern and southern regions of the country. The onion supply presents interannual variations associated with significant postharvest losses, mainly caused by bacterial rots. Besides bulb rotting, onion leaf lesions as well as infections on seed-stalks during seed production may be devastating for some varieties under conducive conditions. This research aimed to identify the causal agents of bulb rots and leaf blight of onion crops in Uruguay. Symptomatic bulbs, seeds-stalks, and leaves were collected from commercial fields from 2015 to 2020. Bacterial colonies were isolated and identified at genera level using physiological tests and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. A collection of 59 Pantoea spp. isolates was obtained (11 from bulbs and 48 from leaves and seeds-stalks). Multilocus sequence analysis using four housekeeping genes (rpoB, gyrB, leuS, and fusA) allowed the assignment of the isolates to five Pantoea species: P. ananatis, P. agglomerans, P. allii, P. eucalypti, and P. vagans. The last two species were not previously reported as onion pathogens elsewhere. The ability to cause disease symptoms was tested by leaf inoculation and red onion scale assays. P. ananatis isolates showed the highest aggressiveness in both assays. Specific isolates from P. allii (MAI 6022), P. eucalypti (MAI 6036), P. vagans (MAI 6050), and Pantoea sp. (MAI 6049) ranked second in aggressiveness on onion leaves, whereas only three isolates belonging to P. eucalypti (MAI 6036 and MAI 6058) and P. agglomerans (MAI 6045) exhibited the same scale-clearing phenotype as P. ananatis. Leaf inoculation assays were also performed on a set of eight onion cultivars and breeding lines. Overall, P. ananatis MAI 6032 showed the highest aggressiveness in all tested cultivars, followed by P. eucalypti MAI 6036. The presence of new reported bacterial species leads to complex disease management and highlights the need for further studies on virulence factors and the epidemiology of these pathogens.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Entomopathogenic fungi such as Beauveria bassiana are extensively used for the control of insect pests worldwide. They infect mostly by adhesion to the insect surface and penetration through the cuticle. However, some insects, such as the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), have evolved resistance by embedding their cuticle with antifungal compounds. Thus, they avoid fungal germination on the cuticle, which result in low susceptibility to entomopathogenic fungi. In adult T. castaneum, these antifungals are the well-known defensive compounds methyl-1,4- and ethyl-1,4- benzoquinone. In this study, we added B. bassiana conidia on the diet of adult beetles to study the effect of the entomopathogen on the secretion and detection of the beetle volatile blend containing both benzoquinones. The compounds were analyzed by solid phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography–flame ionization detection, and were detected by electroantennography. In addition, we measured the expression level of four genes encoding for two odorant-binding proteins (OBP), one chemosensory protein (CSP), and one odorant receptor (OR) in both healthy and fungustreated insects. Significant alterations in the secretion of both benzoquinones, as well as in the perception of methyl-1,4-benzoquinone, were found in fungus-treated insects. TcOBP7D, TcOBP0A and TcCSP3A genes were down-regulated in insects fed conidia for 12 and 48 h, and the latter gene was up-regulated in 72 h samples. TcOR1 expression was not altered at the feeding times studied. We conclude that fungus-treated insects alter both secretion and perception of benzoquinones, but additional functional and genetic studies are needed to fully understand the effects of fungal infection on the insect chemical ecology.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Sensory scientists have adapted several sensory methods to fit children's cognitive abilities. Although several discrimination methods have been reported with children, the A-not-A test has not been studied yet. The aims of this work were to: (i) evaluate the feasibility of using the A-Not-A test with school aged children, and (ii) compare how the framing of the question (overall differences vs. differences in liking) may influence the
results. A total of 126 children were involved in the study. They participated in three sessions, each composed of a familiarization task with a visual stimuli and sample tasting with
one of three dairy products (vanilla milk desserts, chocolate-flavored milk, and vanillaflavored yogurt). Half of the children evaluated the samples in terms of overall differences and the other half in terms of differences in liking. Results from the familiarization step showed that children correctly identified the visual reference in the A-not-A test regardless of how the question was framed, suggesting that they were able to understand the methodology. In the case of tasting samples, children were significantly more likely to correctly identify the reference in two of the three studied dairy products, when the question was based on liking, as compared to the framing based on overall differences.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Rice is an important source of methane (CH4) and other crops may be sources of nitrous oxide (N2O), both of which are powerful greenhouse gases. In Uruguay, irrigated rice rotates with perennial pastures and allows high productivity and low environmental impact. A long-term experiment with contrasting rice rotation intensification alternatives, including rice–soybean and continuous rice, was recently carried out in an Argialboll located in a temperate region of South America. To know if rotation systems influence soil microbial activity involved in CH4 and N2O emissions, the abundance and potential rate for gas production or consumption of microbial populations were measured during the rice crop season. CH4 was only emitted when rice was flooded and N2O emission was not detected. All rotational soils showed the highest rate for methanogenesis at tillering (30 days after rice emergence), while for methanotrophy, the maximum rate was reached at flowering. The abundance of related genes also followed a seasonal pattern with highest densities of mcrA genes being observed at rice flowering whereas pmoA genes were more abundant in dry soils after rice harvest, regardless of the rotation system. Differences were foundmainly at tillering when soils with two consecutive summers under rice showed higher amounts ofmcrA and pmoA gene copies. The potential denitrification rate was highest at the tillering stage, but the abundance of nirK and nirS genes was highest in winter. Regarding ammoniumoxidation, bacterial amoA abundance was higher in winter while the archaeal amoA gene was similar throughout the year. A strong influence of the rice growth stage was registered for most of the parameters measured in rice paddy soils in this no-till rice intensification experiment. However, differences among rotations begin to be observed mainly at tillering when the abundance of populations of the methane and nitrous oxide cycles seemed to respond to the rice intensification.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Rice paddy soils are an important biogenic source of methane, a relevant greenhouse gas. Rice rotation with upland crops and pastures affects hydrolytic and fermentative bacteria and methanogenic archaea by sequential exposition to oxic and anoxic conditions. There are several ways to reduce methane emissions from rice paddy soils. Here we examine the effect of intensification in rice rotations with upland crops upon the microbial community structure and methanogenesis when dicarboxylic acids exudated by rice root were amended in microcosms assays. Soils under rotations rice-pasture, rice-soybean and continuous rice, with the last two more intensive systems recently installed in the field experiment, were sampled. Amplicon sequencing of 16S rRNA gene analysis showed that the rotation system was a main driver of the microbial community structure, explaining 33%, 38% and 55% of the differences in the structure of Bacteria, Archaea and methanogens, respectively. The density of mcrA gene copies was significantly higher in continuous rice soil than in other soils, and the relative abundance of methanogenic archaea was 33% for rice monoculture, whereas represented 15% and 14% for the rice-pasture and rice-soybean soils, respectively. The incubation of soils with tartrate and succinate confirmed functional differences among soils since rice monoculture showed similar or higher methane production and significantly less acetate and propionate accumulation than other soils. The T-RFLP analysis of mcrA gene in soils and incubated soils revealed that Rice Cluster I increased after incubation in all rotational soils, whereas Methanosarcinaceae and Methanobacteriaceae remained relevant after incubation. Furthermore, a more stable community of methanogenic archaea was established in soil under continuous rice, since T-RF profiles of soils and incubated soils with dicarboxylic acids grouped together with 62% similarity, while communities from other rotational soils experimented a great shift after incubation with these substrates. Altogether, these results showed that the conversion of rice-pasture rotational fields to a more intensive rice crop production strongly impacts the methanogenic community structure and their potential for methane emission.</dcterms:abstract>

Given the limited stability of 5-HMF under conventional conditions used for this reaction, acidic milieu in combination with high temperature or long reaction times, we explored factors which influence the course of the reaction (solvent, catalyst, time, and temperature) within the guidelines of previously reported green reaction conditions. Mild conditions and short reaction times were achieved to obtain good conversion and selectivity values. The reaction scope was exemplified by preparing a small compound library based on the optimized conditions varying the amidine and the isocyanide component. The hydroxymethylfuran moiety present in the GBB products, imidazo[1,2-a]heterocycles, provides useful functionalization for further transformations, which could expand the diversity of the chemical space.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The development of the biodiesel industry with the concomitant production of glycerol as the major byproduct has had a negative impact on the glycerol market. The application of circular economy concepts has led to progress in production processes that use this residue as starting material. Propylene glycol has been identified as a potential destiny of glycerol surplus; however, the possibility of increasing this valorization from the existence of a stereogenic center has been scarcely explored. Using metabolic engineering in E. coli, a set of biocatalysts capable of biotransforming glycerol to (R)-1,2-propanediol has been designed, built, and evaluated. The simultaneous expression of a methylglyoxal reductase (Gre2p) and an aldehyde reductase (Ypr1p) both from S. cerevisiae origin, along with the overexpression of E. coli methylglyoxal synthase (mgsA), resulted in an E. coli strain capable of producing enantiomerically pure (e.e.> 99%) (R)-1,2-propanediol from glycerol, in a concentration of 209 ± 9mg.L-1. <dcterms:abstract>The continuous introduction of new technologies and new instruments in the analytical field drives the laboratories to try to purchase fancy instruments that most of the cases are oversized for the needs of the laboratory. Identifying and quantifying organochlorine compounds is a normal task nowadays but it is always challenging when the matrix involved has environmental factors or complex biological matrix. Herein we describe step-by-step the protocols used in our lab for sample preparation and accurate quantification of organochlorine compounds in drinking water, surface water, underground water, and biological samples using gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD) or gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS).</dcterms:abstract>

The analyzer is based on a pulsed flow analysis system employing solenoid micropumps and uses photometric detection based on LEDs and photodiodes. The analytes it determines are orthophosphate, nitrite and nitrate. The analyzer was programmed to perform a complete analysis cycle every 6 h. The end user receives the information from the analyzer via text messages (SMS), a service available even in rural and less developed areas, and requiring simple (non-smart) cell phones. The linear range was up to 25 mg L-1P for phosphate, up to 1600 μg L-1N-NO2for nitrite, and up to 2500 μg L-1N-NO3for nitrite plus nitrate. <dcterms:abstract>
Alternate bearing in citrus trees has been extensively studied as a key feature for citrus growers. Although the genetic and the biochemical process occurring during alternate bearing has been studied extensively, there is a lack of information identifying the presence of metabolic indicators during “on” and “off” years. In citrus plants, leaves play a central role in the metabolic pathway triggering the flflowering induction process. To investigate the changes during this transition, a liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis of the leaf profifiles of 20 compounds (17 polyphenols, two limonoids, and one furanocoumarin), in bearing and non-bearing branches arising from four different mandarin genotypes, was performed. The same metabolites were found in all the genotypes at both stages: both limonoids and 11 polyphenols.

Using these compounds, the chemotaxonomic differentiation between cultivars was assessed. The levels of flflavanones and limonoids showed differences in both bearing stages and the transition from vegetative to flflowering could be shown by the activation of the polyphenol biosynthetic pathway, from precursors like naringenin to metabolic end-points such as narirutin and polymethoxyflflavones.

Narirutin levels showed signifificant differences between both stages, suggesting it as a possible marker of the physiological status of the branch.
</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>A path to enhance the efficiency of photocatalytic devices is by doping the active semiconductor in order to maximize the light absorption. However, impurities could increase the recombination of photoinduced charge carriers, in order that a careful analysis on the effects of those impurities it is necessary. On this research, density functional theory calculations were applied to analyze the structure and electronic characteristics of B–doped and C+B–codoped TiO2(B) considering the lowest formation energy of substitutional impurities. Our calculations suggest that the swapping of a boron or carbon atom for an oxygen atom (B@O or C@O) is energetically more favorable than the replacement of titanium atoms. The obtained results seem to indicate that the boron substitution into O2C and O3C1 sites leads to its migration towards interstitial sites in both mono and codoping, thus causing a great geometrical distortion compared to pure TiO2(B). Furthermore, impurity states in the band gap were obtained after B@O doping and C+B–codoping, producing an improvement of the optical properties, so it can be assumed that this nanomaterial might act as a photoelectrode after an adequate design optimization that facilitates the charge carrier separation.</dcterms:abstract>
