<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Monoterpenes are frequently the most common and distinctive components of essential oils. Most of them (the so-called regular monoterpenes) obey the Ruzicka’s Isoprene Biogenetic Rule, which means that the assembly of the bioactive isoprene building blocks (IPP and DMAPP) takes place in a head-to tail fashion. However, in some cases, the occurrence of completely different biogenetic assemblies gives rise to irregular monoterpenes that do not go from head-to-tail. The most common representatives of this type being artemisyl, chrysanthemyl, lavandulyl, and santolinyl skeletons. In addition, rearrangements from regular compounds are also frequently observed giving rise to a new category of irregular monoterpenes, the rearranged ones. Finally, other closely related group is made up by the degraded monoterpenes (or nor-monoterpenes or homoterpenes),compounds that lose carbon atoms during their biosynthesis and that can be considered also as “irregulars”. This chapter discusses the role of these three groups of compounds as all of them have eventually been identified in essential oils. Emphasis will be placed on rearranged monoterpenes, especially ortho-menthane derivatives, due to the paucity of literature dealing with this topic. Carquejol and piquerols, and some of their derivatives are reviewed according to their occurrence, possible biosynthesis, and biological properties. Semi-synthesis will also be discussed, as potentially bioactive compounds could be obtained. Finally, some practical aspects for the preparation of carquejol oxide (7,8-epoxy carquejol), a novel derivative of the ortho-menthane family, will be presented.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The field-gathered pollen collected by honey bees, named corbicular pollen, is a source of information from the beehive’s environment. Palynological analysis of pollen collected by honey bees offers details on the amounts and types of botanical resources they visited. Pollen can be contaminated due to agricultural practices, which can be useful as a source of information of the type and amount of pollutants honey bees bring to the hive. In the present work, palynological and pesticide residue analyses were performed in 27 samples of corbicular pollen from 8 apiaries located in different agroecosystems from Uruguay. Most of the pollen in each sample, except one, came from non-cultivated and native flora species, independently from the apiaries location: 43 botanical resources were identified but only 12 of them corresponded to cultivated plants. Pesticide residues analysis was targeted to 33 compounds and performed by chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry techniques, using validated protocols. Different loads and types of pesticides were detected in the different agroecosystems: 72 pesticide residues corresponding to 13 active substances in a concentration range from 0.4 to 90 µg kg-1 . The Pollen Hazard Quotient (PHQ) was calculated in order to rank pesticides and agroecosystems according to honey bee risk-based criteria. The combination of palynological studies of each sample coupled to the determination of its pesticide loads´, permitted to pose questions about the different possible origins of the exposure of honey bees to pesticides.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[So far, the growth of graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures on different metallic substrates has been achieved mainly by chemical vapor depositions techniques at ultrahigh vacuum conditions. We report for the first time, evidence of graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures via zinc dimethoxide hydrolysis−condensation under ambient conditions on a Au(111) gold-coated surface. Moreover, we also show that these systems can be monitored using a relatively accessible instrumentation technique such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) in addition to other complementary techniques. Our experimental data were supported by computational simulations of graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures using DFT and TD-DFT methodologies. For the first time, the SERS features of graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures with hydroxyl-terminated edges are presented in addition to their corresponding calculated Raman features for periodic and nanosized models. The preparation and monitoring of these graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures by means of more accessible techniques is a key to driving advances in their performance as novel materials for energy, sensing, and catalysis applications.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Nutritional warning labels are gaining relevance in the region of the Americas as a policy tool to reduce in formation asymmetry and encourage healthier food choices. However, empirical evidence about consumer ex periences with warning labels after implementation is still scarce. In this context, the aim of the present work was to explore the use of nutritional warning labels after policy implementation in Uruguay, using a combination of eye-tracking and self-reported data. The study was conducted in three supermarkets, in two regional capitals, 19 months after the entry into force of the policy. A total of 224 participants were intercepted while entering the facilities of the supermarket and asked to wear a mobile eye-tracker while making their food purchases. Then, they were asked a series of questions about their awareness and use of warning labels. Although participants reported high awareness and understanding of the labels, active search and use at the point of purchase was low. Only 6% of the consumers declared having actively searched for the warning labels and 7% fixated their gaze on the labels. The majority of the participants (72%) who declared having seen the warnings on a product, pur chased it anyway. However, 56% declared having changed their food choice decisions as a consequence of the implementation of the policy. Participants’ accounts about reasons for (not) taking into account the warning labels provide relevant insights for the development of strategies to encourage citizens to increase policy effectiveness and encourage healthier food choices.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Food-waste reduction could provide significant benefits in the transition towards more sustainable agri-food systems. Households account for a significant share of total food waste, both in emerging and industri alized countries. In Latin America and the Caribbean region, lack of data has been acknowledged. The present study explores household food waste in Uruguay, an emerging country, through food-waste diaries. Data from 142 households provided an estimate of food-waste quantity and composition comparable to those reported in developed countries. The economic value of food wasted monthly represented 11 per cent of the average per capita food expenditure. In terms of environmental impact, the average carbon footprint of household food waste was 0.15 tonnes of CO2 per person per year. <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The plantation and natural forests of South America have been highly impacted by native and exotic pests in recent decades. The interaction of emerging invasive pests, climate change, and timber markets will define the region’s forests, with significant but uncertain ecological changes and economic losses expected. The Southern Cone Forest Health Group (SCFHG), a joint ad hoc initiative run by forest health professionals from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay, aims to strengthen relationships between the forestry industry, stakeholders, academia, and government agencies across the region. Here, we highlight regional strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities to address forest health issues in the region. A regional approach with a strong communication network is relevant for future actions. In the current global scenario of invasive species and climate change, the implementation of practices that incorporate the resilience of forest ecosystems and sustainable management needs to be prioritized in forest policy across the region. Understanding that pests and pathogens do not recognize borders, we call on governments and organizations to support joint actions with agreements and adequate resources to enhance our regional capabilities.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Food losses, defined as a reduction in the quantity and quality of food during production and storage, impact food safety and security. Losses caused by plant pathogens are among the most significant. Chemical pesticides have been extensively used to prevent microbial diseases. Their toxicity and reduced efficacy, however, have encouraged investigators to develop alternatives. Alternatives based on microbial biopesticides tend to be safer and more environmentally benign than conventional pesticides. In recent years, formulations based on biopesticides have progressively increased in number and diversity and have attracted commercial interest. Understanding the mechanisms by which biopesticides control the disease is fundamental to achieving optimal disease control. Biocontrol mechanisms can be divided into two main categories: those related to the ability to inhibit pathogens or their virulence factors, and those that enhance host plant fitness and induce disease resistance. Here, the first type of strategy is reviewed, which is directly mediated by physical contact between biocontrol agents and pathogens or indirectly by exposure of a pathogen to antimicrobial or microbial-inhibiting compounds produced by the microbial antagonist. Mechanisms involving physical contact include mycophagy, destruction of pathogenic bacteria by bacteriophages or predation, and disease inhibition by topical applications of specific dsRNA. Indirect mechanisms that do not involve direct contact with a pathogen include the production of antimicrobial compounds, competition, and virulence factor suppression by quorum quenching. These topics are reviewed and discussed.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The full utilization of the main components in the lignocellulosic biomass is the major goal from a biorefinery point of view, giving not only environmental benefits but also making the process economically viable. In this sense the solid residue obtained in bioethanol production after steam explosion pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentation of the lignocellulosic biomass, was studied for further valorization. Two different residues were analyzed, one generated by the production of cellulosic ethanol from an energy crop such as switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) and the other, from wood (Eucalyptus globulus). The chemical composition of these by-products showed that they were mainly composed of lignin with a total content range from 70 to 83% (w/w) and small amounts of cellulose and hemicellulose. The present work was focused on devising a new alternative for processing these materials, based on the ability of the ionic liquids (IL) to dissolve lignocellulosic biomass. The resulting mixture of biopolymers and IL constituted the raw material for developing new insoluble biocatalysts. Active hydrogels based on fungal laccase from Dichostereum sordulentum 1488 were attained. A multifactorial analysis of the main variables involved in the immobilization process enabled a more direct approach to improving hydrogel-bound activity. These hydrogels achieved a 97% reduction in the concentration of the estrogen ethinylestradiol, an emerging contaminant of particular concern due to its endocrine activity. The novel biocatalysts based on fungal laccase entrapped on a matrix made from a by-product of second-generation bioethanol production presents great potential for performing heterogeneous catalysis offering extra value to the ethanol biorefinery.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Our research group has made incursions into the scarcely known coordination chemistry of rhenium(II). The literature shows that Re(II) mononuclear complexes are attractive in molecular magnetism due to high magnetic anisotropy because of a significant spin-orbit coupling, making them a potential source for new molecule-based magnets. In this work, we present the preparation of four novel Re(II) compounds of general formula NBu4 [Re(NO)Br4 (L)] [NBu4 + = tetra-n-butylammonium: L = imidazole (1), pyrazole (2), 1,2,4-triazole (3) and 1H-tetrazole (4)]. The four compounds were fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and cryomagnetic measurements in the temperature range of 1.8–300 K. Their crystal structures consist of mononuclear [Re(NO)Br4 (L)]− complex anions and NBu4 + cations. Each Re(II) ion is six-coordinate with a linear nitrosyl group and one monodentate nitrogen-donor (L), which are trans-positioned, plus four bromide groups, building a tetragonally distorted octahedral surrounding. The inter-anionic contacts were thoroughly analyzed using Hirshfeld surface analyses (plots over the dnorm, shape index, and 2D fingerprints). Cryomagnetic measurements show that these complexes behave as quasi-magnetically isolated spin doublets with weak antiferromagnetic interactions at low temperatures. The magnetic behavior of Re(II) was modeled by the influence of the ligand field, tetragonal distortion, spin-orbit coupling, and covalence effects. In addition, the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling was correlated to the nature of the intermolecular interactions.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The CO2 reduction reaction on Ag in the presence of surface plasmons are of strong interest in photocatalysis. Here, two Density Functional Theory (DFT) approaches are proposed to localize charges at the Ag surface to mimic surface plasmon excitation. These calculations predict charge localization at the outermost surface layer, a result confirmed via light excitation at the plasmon resonance modeled by Density Functional Tight Binding Hamiltonian (DFTB) theory. The CO2(gas) reduction initial steps are studied by DFT models showing that bonded species can be created on top of an Ag-atom in the presence of extra charges. A second CO2 molecule can assist the first molecule, decreasing the charge carrier density requirement for CO2 reduction bonded species. A Molecular Dynamics (MD) study shows a possible interaction among CO2 molecule. These results show that a static DFT simulation can mimic charge localization resulting from surface plasmon effects, thus enabling studies on surface plasmon-enhanced chemical reactions, paving the way for future time-dependent (TD) studies.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Despite the success of immune checkpoint blockade for cancer therapy, many patients do not respond adequately. We aimed to improve this therapy by optimizing both the antibodies and their delivery route, using small monodomain antibodies (nanobodies) delivered locally with a self-amplifying RNA (saRNA) vector based on Semliki Forest virus (SFV). We generated nanobodies against PD-1 and PD-L1 able to inhibit both human and mouse interactions. Incorporation of a dimerization domain reduced PD-1/PD-L1 IC50 by 8- and 40-fold for anti- PD-L1 and anti-PD-1 nanobodies, respectively. SFV viral particles expressing dimeric nanobodies showed a potent antitumor response in the MC38 model, resulting in >50% complete regressions, and showed better therapeutic efficacy compared to vectors expressing conventional antibodies. These effects were also observed in the B16 melanoma model. Although a short-term expression of nanobodies was observed due to the cytopathic nature of the saRNA vector, it was enough to generate a strong proinflammatory response in tumors, increasing infiltration of NK and CD8+ T cells. Delivery of the SFV vector expressing dimeric nanobodies by local plasmid electroporation, which could be more easily translated to the clinic, also showed a potent antitumor effect.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Changes in climatic and environmental conditions can affect both, plant chemical molecular and atomic composition. Therefore, biomass carbon isotope composition is frequently used to gain information about the environmental conditions at the time a plant thrives. In this field, most studies use isotope values obtained from bulk samples. However, these values are a weighted average of the different plant compounds. The isotopic characterization of individual compounds represents a relevant analytical advance able to differentiate the isotopic composition of the main plant components i.e., polysaccharides, lignin, polypeptides, lipids, waxes, etc. Here, we investigate the link between molecular and isotope composition of bark and lignin extracted from three Eucalyptus species (E. grandis, E. dunnii and a hybrid E. grandis X E. dunnii) using pyrolysis compoundspecific isotope analysis (Py-CSIA). This technique, although not widely used, has been previously developed and applied, with different variants, to characterize plant products including lignin, sugars, and terpenes. Retrieved results for both bark and lignin samples showed the isotopic differences regarding the diverse biogenic groups, accounting for a 13C-enrichment in polysaccharides up to 2.5‰ compared to lignin methoxyphenols, which is consistent with the fractionation during metabolization of the plant. A strong positive correlation was found between the bulk isotope and compound-specific values, especially when applying a weight factor related to the relative abundance of each compound, which support the analytical suitability of this technique. Despite that bark from different origins provide very similar pyrolysis patterns, isotopic composition of relevant specific compounds can make the difference giving additional valuable information.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Biogas upgrading through dry reforming is a promising technology for converting biomass into high-value products such as synthesis gas. In this work, Ni-La-Ti catalysts were synthesized using different preparation methods (impregnation, coprecipitation and modified Pechini method) and evaluated in clean biogas dry reforming reaction at 800 ◦C using two different CH4/CO2 molar ratios (1.5 and 3) to study the effects of the different biogas qualities on catalytic activity and stability. Fresh and used catalysts were examined by several techniques including the BET method, XRD, ICP-AES, H2-TPR, CO2-TPD, EPR, Raman, TGA, SEM and TEM. The different catalytic activities obtained could be attributed to the different degree of Ni-La-Ti interaction. The catalyst prepared by impregnation shows the highest initial catalytic activity for the two CH4/CO2 ratios tested. However, it was observed that the formation of solid carbon took place to a greater extent on this catalyst. The catalyst prepared by the modified Pechini method showed good stability through a 100 h stability test using CH4/CO2 = 1.5 feed ratio. Characterization of the used catalyst confirmed the formation of mainly filamentous type carbon and high resistance to Ni sintering.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Vertical farming (alternatively, plant factories with artificial lighting) has the potential to contribute to sustainable food production and consumption and is relevant for several of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Already many consumers seem positive about vertical farming, but as fresh produce from vertical farming systems begin to become available to consumers, it is imperative that this positive attitude translates into purchase and consumption behaviour. In a multi-country study (USA, Australia, Germany and Singapore) where 2193 adult consumers (25–54 years old) took part in an online survey, the present quantitative research: i) investigated the aspects of vertical farming that are perceived positively and negatively by consumers, ii) measured stated intention to purchase lettuce from vertical farming, and iii) determined characteristics of vertical farming that are positive and negative drivers of intention to purchase. A largely positive attitude to vertical farming was confirmed, as well as the existence of smaller groups of people with negative and neutral/ ambivalent attitudes. Cross-cultural differences in attitudes to vertical farming also existed but these were relatively minor. On average, participants from USA were most positive, while those from Germany were least positive. Stated intention to purchase lettuce from vertical farming was ~70% (‘probably will buy’), and again stated likelihood was highest in USA (74%) and lowest in Germany (65%). Based on the findings from the analysis that linked likelihood to purchase lettuce from vertical farming to attitude to specific characteristics of vertical farming, strategies to promote consumption of produce from vertical farming should stress the contribution of the technology to a more sustainable development, including health, environmental and social aspects.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Research into perceived wellbeing (WB) can improve understanding of consumer food choices and support development of strategies to promote healthier and more sustainable eating habits. In this research, using online studies, food-related WB was explored among New Zealand consumers. In a “quasi-replication” of Jaeger, Vidal, Chheang, and Ares (2022), Study 1 uncovered word associations to different WB-related terms (‘Sense of wellbeing,’ ‘Lack of wellbeing,’ ‘Feeling good,’ ‘Feeling bad/unhappy,’ ‘Satisfied with life,’ and ‘Dissatisfied with life’) with 912 participants in a between-subjects design. The results confirmed the multidimensional nature of WB, and the need to consider positive and negative aspects of food-related WB, as well as differences linked to physical, emotional, and spiritual WB. Drawing on Study 1, 13 characteristics of food-related WB were identified, and in Study 2 their importance for feeling a ‘Sense of wellbeing’ and ‘Satisfied with life’ was determined with 1206 participants using a between-subjects design. In a further extension, Study 2 also adopted a product-specific perspective and explored the associations of, and importance, for 16 different foods and beverages to foodrelated WB. Based on Best-Worst Scaling and penalty/lift analysis, the four most important characteristics overall were ‘Is good quality,’ ‘Is healthy,’ ‘Is fresh,’ and ‘Is tasty,’ with the nuance that healthiness contributed most to feeling a ‘Sense of wellbeing’ while good quality contributed most to feeling ‘Satisfied with life.’ The associations to individual foods and beverages underscored that food-related WB is a complex construct arising from an overall evaluation of the different effects of foods (including physical health, social and spiritual aspects of food consumption) and their short-term effects on food-related behaviour. Contextual and individual differences in perceptions of WB in relation to food deserve further investigation.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Purpose The current research aimed to examine the prevalence of Instagram posts featuring ultra-processed products targeted at adolescents in Uruguay and hence investigate the frequency of such posts among a vulnerable consumer segment in a country that cannot be classified as WEIRD (i.e. Western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic). Design/methodology/approach The study relied on a cross-sectional content analysis. A total of 2,014 Instagram posts promoting ultraprocessed products or brands commercializing such products, generated by 118 Instagram accounts between August 15th, 2020, and February 15th, 2021, were analyzed. Nine indicators of food marketing targeted at adolescents were selected to identify posts targeted at this age segment. Inductive coding was used to describe the content of the posts. Descriptive statistics and generalized linear models were used to analyze the data. Findings In total, 17.6% of the posts were identified as targeted at adolescents. Graphic design and adolescent language were the most prevalent indicators of marketing targeted at adolescents, followed by explicit references to adolescents or young adults and memes. Posts identified as targeted at adolescents mainly promoted snacks and discretionary foods. Differences in the content of posts identified as targeted and not targeted at adolescents were observed. Research limitations/implications The analysis was restricted to one social media platform in one country during a limited period of time, which limits the generalizability of the findings to other media platforms, samples and settings. Social implications Results stress the need to implement digital food marketing regulations to reduce exposure of adolescents to the deleterious effects of stemming from marketing of unhealthy foods and provide empirical evidence to inform their development. Originality/value The study breaks new ground by analyzing]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Here, we present a novel methodology for the preparation of P3HT:TiO2 quantum dots hybrid materials via water vapor flow-assisted sol-gel growth focusing on the structural, optical and electrical property characterization complemented with first-principles calculations as a promising donor–acceptor system for polymer and hybrid solar cells. X-ray diffraction and UV-Vis spectroscopy analyses suggest that the increasing concentration of TiO2 quantum dots leads to the formation of higher amounts of amorphous regions while the crystalline regions exhibited interesting aspect ratio modifications for the P3HT polymer. Raman spectra evidenced the formation of charge carriers in the P3HT with increasing TiO2 quantum dots content and the P3HT:TiO2 50:50 weight ratio resulted in the best composition for optimizing the bulk electronic conductivity, as evidenced by impedance spectroscopy studies. Our DFT calculations performed for a simplified model of the P3HT:TiO2 interface revealed that there is an important contribution of the thiophene carbon atoms states in the conduction band at the Fermi level. Finally, our DFT calculations also reveal an evident gain of electron density at the TiO2 (101) surface while the thiophene rings showed a loss of the electron density, thus confirming that the P3HT:TiO2 junction acts as a good donor–acceptor system. In our opinion, these results not only present a novel methodology for the preparation of P3HT:TiO2 quantum dots hybrid materials but also reveal some key aspects to guide the more rational design of polymer and hybrid solar cells.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Fijiviruses replicate and package their genomes within viroplasms in a pro cess involving RNA-RNA and RNA-protein interactions. Here, we demonstrate that the 24 C-terminal residues (C-arm) of the P9-1 major viroplasm protein of the mal de Río Cuarto virus (MRCV) are required for its multimerization and the formation of viroplasm like structures. Using an integrative structural approach, the C-arm was found to be dis pensable for P9-1 dimer assembly but essential for the formation of pentamers and hexamers of dimers (decamers and dodecamers), which favored RNA binding. Although both P9-1 and P9-1DC-arm catalyzed ATP with similar activities, an RNA-stimulated ATPase activity was only detected in the full-length protein, indicating a C-arm-mediated interaction between the ATP catalytic site and the allosteric RNA binding sites in the (do)decameric assemblies. A stronger preference to bind phosphate moieties in the dec amer was predicted, suggesting that the allosteric modulation of ATPase activity by RNA is favored in this structural conformation. Our work reveals the structural versatility]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Inositol poly- and pyrophosphates (InsPs and PP-InsPs) are central eukaryotic messengers. These very highly phosphorylated molecules can exist in two distinct conformations, a canonical one with five phosphoryl groups in equatorial positions, and a “flipped” conformation with five axial substituents. Using 13C-labeled InsPs/PP-InsPs, the behavior of these molecules was investigated by 2D-NMR under solution conditions reminiscent of a cytosolic environment. Remarkably, the most highly phosphorylated messenger 1,5(PP)2 -InsP4 (also termed InsP8 ) readily adopts both conforma tions at physiological conditions. Environmental factors—such as pH, metal cation composition, and temperature—strongly influence the conformational equilibrium. Thermodynamic data revealed that the transition of InsP8 from the equatorial to the axial conformation is, in fact, an exothermic process. The speciation of InsPs and PP-InsPs also affects their interaction with protein binding partners; addition of Mg2+ decreased the binding constant Kd of InsP8 to an SPX protein domain. The results illustrate that PP-InsP speciation reacts very sensitively to solution conditions, suggesting it might act as an environment-responsive molecular switch.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The present research contributed to a better understanding of how check-all-that apply (CATA) questions work by examining the relationship between likelihood of selecting a term and perceived attribute intensity. Seven consumer studies were con ducted (147–157 people per study) using within-subjects experimental designs where participants twice evaluated the same set of stimuli on the same set of terms (or attributes), respectively with CATA questions and intensity scaling (7-point cate gory scale; 1 = “not at all,” 7 = “extremely”). As a function of perceived intensity, the average CATA citation frequency tended to follow a sigmoidal-like relationship where likelihood of selecting a CATA term increased more slowly at the extreme ends of the intensity scale (1–2 and 6–7) and linearly otherwise. This illuminates why for a given term, CATA questions are less suited for discriminating between samples that are of similar “low” or “high” intensity.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Grape pomaces have a wide and diverse antioxidant phenolics composition. Six Uruguayan red grape pomaces were evaluated in their phenolics composition, antioxidant capacity, and anti inflammatory properties. Not only radical scavenging methods as DPPH· and ABTS·+ were employed but also ORAC and FRAP analyses were applied to assess the antioxidant potency of the extracts. The antioxidant reactivity of all extracts against hydroxyl radicals was assessed with ESR. The phenol profile of the most bioactive extract was analyzed by HPLC-MS, and a set of 57 structures were determined. To investigate the potential anti-inflammatory activity of the extracts, Nuclear Factor kappa-B (NF-κB) modulation was evaluated in the human colon cancer reporter cell line (HT-29-NF-κB-hrGFP). Our results suggest that Tannat grapes pomaces have higher phenolic content and antioxidant capacity compared to Cabernet Franc. These extracts inhibited TNF-alpha mediated NF-κB activation and IL-8 production when added to reporter cells. A molecular docking study was carried out to rationalize the experimental results allowing us to propose the proactive interaction between the NF-κB, the grape extracts phenols, and their putative anti-inflammatory bioactivity. The present findings show that red grape pomace constitutes a sustainable source of phenolic compounds, which may be valuable for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industry applications.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[While Cannabis sativa L. varieties have been traditionally characterized by their major cannabinoid profile, it is now well established that other plant metabolites can also have physiological effects, including minor cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. Given the multiple applications of cannabis in the medical field, it is therefore critical to characterize it according to its chemical composition (i.e., its metabolome) and not only its botanical traits. With this in mind, the cannabinoid and metabolomic profiles from inflorescences of two C. sativa varieties with either high D9 -tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) or high cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) contents harvested at different times were studied. According to results from HPLC and NMR-based untargeted metabolomic analyses of organic and aqueous plant material extracts, we show that in addition to expected variations according to cannabinoid profiles, it is possible to distinguish between harvests of the same variety. In particular, it was possible to correlate variations in the metabolome with presence of powdery mildew, leading to the identification of molecular markers associated with this fungal infection in C. sativa.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Manuka honey is a valuable commodity produced by bees foraging the flowers of Leptospermum scoparium, a bush native to New Zealand and Australia. Due to its high value and proven health benefits, authenticity fraud in the sale of this food is a significant risk, as recounted in the literature. Four compulsory natural products must be present at minimum concentrations to authenticate manuka honey (3-phenyllactic acid, 2′ -methox yacetophenone, 2-methoxybenzoic acid, and 4-hydroxyphenyllactic acid). However, spiking other kinds of honey with these compounds and/or the dilution of manuka honey with other varieties may result in fraud going undetected. In this work, liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry and a metabolomics-based strategy has allowed us to tentatively identify 19 natural products –putative manuka honey markers–, nine of which are reported for the first time. Chemometric models applied to these markers allowed the detection of both spiking and dilution fraud attempts of manuka honey, even at 75% manuka honey purity. Thus, the herein-reported methodology can be employed in the prevention and detection of manuka honey adulteration even at low levels, and the tentatively identified markers presented in this work proved valuable for manuka honey authentication procedures.]]></dcterms:abstract>
