<dcterms:abstract>The use of inorganic nanoparticles as electron acceptors in hybrid solar cells has been increased. Some advantages compared to electron acceptors based on organic materials, are better electron transfer and lower production costs. We report the synthesis of ββ-HgS nanoparticles by a combination of solution method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as stabilizing agent, and hydrothermal treatment to diminish nanoparticles size and improve size distribution. The combination of a bottom-up and a top-down technique proved to be an appropriate method to obtain HgS nanoparticles with sizes in the order of the Bohr radius, essential for charge carrier generation in the solar cell. Additionally, PVP was replaced by hexadecanethiol (HDT). This exchange allowed the spin coating of a thin film of ββ-HgS dispersed in poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) onto a glass substrate. Characterizations showed that the HgS nanoparticles and the polymer were homogeneously mixed, but several aggregated HgS nanoparticles were still present. The lowering in the photoluminescence signal of the layer is an indicative of charge carrier transfer between the nanoparticles and P3HT. Our results are encouraging for the development of hybrid solar cells using ββ-HgS nanoparticles and P3HT. To our knowledge, these results are the first obtained for ββ-HgS nanoparticles, using a bottom-up/top-down approach. It is also the first time a nano-ββ-HgS/P3HT layer with promising properties as hybrid solar cell is reported.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Astringency is one of the most important characteristics that define the quality of red wine, and is of particular relevance for Tannat, Uruguayan emblematic red wine variety. Astringency is a time-dependant and complex sensory characteristic, related to several sensations, or sub-qualities, that can be simultaneously perceived. The aim of the present study was to obtain a sensory characterization of the astringency of commercial Uruguayan Tannat wines. Forty samples with different characteristics in terms of vintage, price segment and aging in oak barrels were assessed by a panel of 9 trained assessors. Total astringency intensity was evaluated using time-intensity (TI), while astringency sub-qualities were described using a check-all-that-apply (CATA) question composed of sixteen terms. TI and the CATA question provided different information on the astringency of Tannat wines. Regarding global astringency, samples mainly differed in intensity-related parameters rather than in the development of astringency over time, although the variability was moderate. A wide range of sub-qualities, from silky and velvety to harsh and aggressive were used to describe the astringency of the evaluated wines. Four groups of samples with different astringency characteristics were identified, but this sorting was not related to vintage, price segment or aging in oak barrels. Further research is necessary to better understand how astringency characteristics are influenced by production variables, and to understand their relationship to consumers' and experts' perceived quality of Tannat wines.</dcterms:abstract>

Seven of these complexes, with aa = valine, leucine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, cysteine and methionine, were described for the first time. Their infrared and Raman spectra, together with those of the previously investigated similar species with aa = glycine, serine, threonine and alanine, and those of the related [VO(NH2O)2(imidazole)2]Cl complex, were recorded and assigned. The spectroscopic behavior of the new complexes is similar to that of the other five, whose structures has been determined by X-ray crystallography, suggesting an identical structure for the full series of complexes. The spectroscopic results also give a better characterization of the vibrational behavior of the interesting O–N–“side-on” bonded hydroxylamido ligand.
</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>
The addition of free radicals and the 1,3 dipolar cycloaddition onto pristine and lithium-doped C60 were studied by means of the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE) and M06-2X density functionals. In all cases, lithium increased the reactivity even though for the 1,3 dipolar cycloaddition onto C60 the change observed with respect to bare C60 was minimal. Both functionals employed gave similar encapsulation energies for Li@C60 namely, 33.1 and 38.2kcal/ mol at the PBE/6-31G* and M06-2X/6-31G*, respectively. However, the increased reactivity because of lithium doping determined at the PBE level is smaller as compared with that computed with the M06-2X functional, whereas that determined at the second-order Møller–Plesset (MP2) level is the largest one. For example, using the M06-2X functional the binding energy of fluorine to Li@C60 is 28.5kcal/mol larger than that determined for C60, whereas at the PBE/6-31G* level it is predicted to be increased by 24.7kcal/mol. The results clearly suggest that Li@C60 is a much better free radical scavenger than C60. Finally, the complex hindered rotations of lithium inside C60 are expected to be strongly inhibited because lithium doping increases the well depth between the cage center and the equilibrium position near the addition site of the lithium atom.
</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>There is increasing interest in the development and use of polyphenolic-rich antioxidant extracts as functional ingredients. However, their bitterness, astringency and characteristicflavour could limit their incorporation in foods and beverages. Four alternatives to reduce the bitterness, astringency, and characteristicflavour of antioxidant extracts of two Uruguayan native plants (Achyrocline satureioides and Baccharis trimera) were studied: sucrose, sucralose, polydextrose, and milk. All the evaluated alternatives highly significantly (p < 0.001) reduced the bitterness, astringency and characteristicflavour of the extracts. However, their effectiveness depended on the type and concentration of the antioxidant extract being considered. Milk was the most effective inhibitor of the bitterness, astringency and characteristic flavour of A. satureioidesextracts; whereas when extracts from B. trimera were considered, sucrose was the most effective alternative. Results from the present work suggest that sweetened dairy products could be interesting carriers for the development of functional foods containing polyphenolic-rich antioxidant extracts.</dcterms:abstract>

Milk puddings containing modified waxy maize starch and κ-carrageenan were produced with different HAMS concentrations (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4%). Higher HAMS concentration caused changes in the sensory characteristics of milk puddings. Particularly, sensory attributes such as some roughness, rough afterfeel and floury taste appeared. Besides, the addition of HAMS caused an increase in manual and oral thickness and a decrease in creaminess, melting, and sweetness. A HAMS enrichment level of 1.4% in this product was estimated as the maximum concentration that does not significantly modify consumers' overall acceptability. Using survival analysis the proportion of consumers who would buy milk desserts containing 1.4 % HAMS was estimated as 71%. Consumers more interested in consuming functional foods enriched with fibre were more tolerant to the sensory changes caused by the addition of HAMS to the milk puddings.
</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>
Environmental lead contamination in Uruguay became a matter of public concern in 2001, when cases of children with blood lead levels (BLL) higher than 20 lg/dl appeared in some low-income neighborhoods of Montevideo, being 10 lg/dl the intervention reference BLL. The aim of this paper is to show the results of multidisciplinary actions taken by decisions makers in social, environmental and healthcare aspects, to minimize lead exposure risks. We evaluated changes in blood lead levels of different children and non-exposed adult populations before and after the actions were taken, from 2001 on. For children populations and non-exposed adults, we found a significant decrease of almost 50% in BLL compared with studies done before the actions were taken. The main action to consider was the phasing out process of leaded gasoline in our country among other. We conclude that the integration of inter and multidisciplinary actions promoted was of high impact on the population, bringing about a public sensitization and growing awareness of the lead environmental risks.

    <dcterms:abstract>
Ladybird beetles produce a large number of defensive alkaloids. Previous studies suggest that the structural diversity of these endogenous alkaloids can be traced to a common biosynthetic route based on the condensation of several acetate units. In this study, adults of Epilachna paenulata, a phytophagous neotropical species, were fed on diet enriched with potential precursors (sodium acetate, fatty acids and the amino acids lysine and ornithine) labeled with stable isotopes (13C, 2H and 15N). Labeled acetate was incorporated into the structurally related homotropane and piperidine alkaloids. The later also showed incorporation of [methyl-2H3] stearic acid. Our results hence support a fatty acid pathway for the biosynthesis of E. paenulata alkaloids. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the incorporation of a labeled fatty acid into a defensive piperidine alkaloid in insects
</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The integration of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) into magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) offers significant potential for advancing molecular spintronics, particularly for next-generation memory devices, quantum computing, and energy storage technologies such as solar cells. In this study, we present the first demonstration of SMM-induced spin-dependent properties in an antiferromagnet-based MTJ molecular spintronic device (MTJMSD). We engineered cross-junction-shaped devices comprising FeMn/AlOx/NiFe MTJs. The AlOx barrier thickness where the exposed junction edges meet was comparable to the SMM length, facilitating the incorporation of SMM molecules as spin channels for spin-dependent transport. The SMM channels enabled long-range magnetic moment ordering around molecular junctions, which were precisely engineered via fabrication processes. The SMM, composed of a [Mn6(μ3-O)2(H2N-sao)6(6-atha)2(EtOH)6] (H2N-saoH = salicylamidoxime, 6-atha = 6-acetylthiohexanoate) complex, featured thioester groups at the ends that upon hydrolysis they form bonds with the magnetic electrodes. SMMtreated junctions demonstrated a significant current enhancement, reaching up to 7 μA at an input voltage of 60 mV. Furthermore, SMM-doped junctions exhibited current stabilization in the μA range at lower temperatures, whereas the bare electrodes showed current suppression to the picoampere range. Magnetization
measurements conducted at 55 K and 300 K on pillar-shaped devices revealed a reduction in magnetic moment at low temperatures. Additionally, Kelvin probe atomic force microscopy (KPAFM) measurements confirmed that SMM integration transformed the electronic properties over long ranges.These findings are attributed to the spin channels formed between magnetic metal electrodes, which enhance spin polarization at each magnetic electrode. Our research highlights the potential of using antiferromagnetic materials, characterized by minimal stray fields and zero net magnetization, to transform MTJMSD devices.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Vaccines are among the most important advances in medicine throughout the human history. However, conventional vaccines exhibit several drawbacks in terms of design and production costs. Peptide-based vaccines are attractive alternatives, since they can be designed mainly in silico, can be produced cheaply and safely, and are able to induce immune responses exclusively towards protective epitopes. Yet, a proper peptide design is needed, not only to generate peptide-specific immune responses, but also for them to recognize the native protein in the occurrence of a natural infection. Herein, we propose a rational workflow for developing peptide-based vaccines including novel steps that assure the cross-recognition of native proteins. In this regard, we increased the probability of generating efficient antibodies through the selection of linear B-cell epitopes free of posttranslational modifications followed by analyzing the 3D-structure similarity between the peptide in-solution vs. within its parental native protein. As a proof of concept, this workflow was applied to a set of seven previously suggested potential protective antigens against the infection by Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. Finally, two peptides were obtained showing the capacity to induce specific antibodies able to exert anti-parasite activities in different in vitro settings, as well as to provide significant protection in the murine model of secondary echinococcosis.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Eucalyptus species are among the most planted trees in forestry production, an ever-increasing commercial activity worldwide. Forestry expansion demands a continuous search for preventive and sanitary measures against pests and diseases. Massive application of phytosanitary products is incompatible with the forestry sector, so forest health management must be based on other principles. In this context, studies on insect plant relationships mediated by plant metabolites may contribute information relevant to plant resistance and genotype selection. In this study, we analyzed the leaf metabolome of four Eucalyptus species commonly planted in southern South America, to correlate this chemical information with feeding preference of Thaumastocoris peregrinus (Hemiptera: Thaumastocoridae), an important pest of eucalypt plantations. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry analyses were performed on polar and non-polar leaf extracts from Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus robusta, and Eucalyptus tereticornis (Myrtaceae). Feeding preferences were assessed in two-choice laboratory bioassays resulting in a preference gradient of the four plant species. Moreover, a performance bioassay where we contrasted survival and development time between the most and least preferred plants, showed a clear correlation with preference both in survival and developmental time of the most susceptible nymph instar. We found that species with high or low feeding preferences differ significantly in several foliar metabolites, which may be acting as feeding stimulants or deterrents for T. peregrinus. These findings may provide useful criteria for choosing Eucalyptus genotypes when planting in bronze bug infested areas.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Herbivorous insects assess and choose their potential host plants based on traits that may correlate with host suitability or quality. These traits may operate as cues for better resources, noxious chemicals, or fewer competitors and enemies. Interac tions between insects and their host plants may also be modulated by the nutritional value of the plant, by plant chemical stimuli, or by physical traits such as trichomes. Diferences in chemical or physical cues among plants may convey informa tion about diet suitability. Several studies have addressed the topic of diferences in plant traits between host and non-host plants; fewer have addressed these diferences among potential host plants. We have studied the efect of chemical and physi cal plant traits on the feeding and oviposition preferences of the oligophagous herbivore Epilachna paenulata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and two of its host plants, Cucurbita maxima and Cucurbita moschata (Cucurbitaceae). We frst typifed the volatile and non-volatile chemical profles and the trichome distribution of the plants. Then, using behavioral assays, we evaluated feeding and oviposition preferences of E. paenulata. Further, to assess a correlation between oviposition prefer ences and ofspring survival, we measured larval performance as indicated by survival, mass, and time to complete each instar. Female longevity in both Cucurbita host plants was also evaluated. Our results show that the congeneric plants bear diferences in their chemical profles, including volatile organic compounds, leaf waxes, and leaf parenchyma metabolites. Trichome abundance was also diferent, with C. maxima presenting fewer hairs. Epilachna paenulata females laid signif cantly more eggs in C. maxima, regardless of the plant they were raised as larvae. Female longevity on C. maxima was higher, but larval performance showed no diference between both plants.The proximate causes mediating female oviposition preferences may then involve trichome abundance, oviposition deterrents, toxic substances, or a combination of these factors.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Here, we present a novel methodology for the preparation of P3HT:TiO2 quantum dots hybrid materials via water vapor flow-assisted sol-gel growth focusing on the structural, optical and electrical property characterization complemented with first-principles calculations as a promising donor–acceptor system for polymer and hybrid solar cells. X-ray diffraction and UV-Vis spectroscopy analyses suggest that the increasing concentration of TiO2 quantum dots leads to the formation of higher amounts of amorphous regions while the crystalline regions exhibited interesting aspect ratio modifications for the P3HT polymer. Raman spectra evidenced the formation of charge carriers in the P3HT with increasing TiO2 quantum dots content and the P3HT:TiO2 50:50 weight ratio resulted in the best composition for optimizing the bulk electronic conductivity, as evidenced by impedance spectroscopy studies. Our DFT calculations performed for a simplified model of the P3HT:TiO2 interface revealed that there is an important contribution of the thiophene carbon atoms states in the conduction band at the Fermi level. Finally, our DFT calculations also reveal an evident gain of electron density at the TiO2 (101) surface while the thiophene rings showed a loss of the electron density, thus confirming that the P3HT:TiO2 junction acts as a good donor–acceptor system. In our opinion, these results not only present a novel methodology for the preparation of P3HT:TiO2 quantum dots hybrid materials but also reveal some key aspects to guide the more rational design of polymer and hybrid solar cells.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>So far, the growth of graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures on different metallic substrates has been achieved mainly by chemical vapor depositions techniques at ultrahigh vacuum conditions. We report for the first time, evidence of graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures via zinc dimethoxide hydrolysis−condensation under ambient conditions on a Au(111) gold-coated surface. Moreover, we also show that these systems can be monitored using a relatively accessible instrumentation technique such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) in addition to other complementary techniques. Our experimental data were supported by computational simulations of graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures using DFT and TD-DFT methodologies. For the first time, the SERS features of graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures with hydroxyl-terminated edges are presented in addition to their corresponding calculated Raman features for periodic and nanosized models. The preparation and monitoring of these graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures by means of more accessible techniques is a key to driving advances in their performance as novel materials for energy, sensing, and catalysis applications.</dcterms:abstract>

The study was mainly focused on the structural, microstructural, electrical and optical characterization of these nanoscale heterostructures by means of X ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman, UV–vis and impedance spectroscopies. Our nanoscale heterostructures yielded a significant enhancement in the electric conductivity interpreted in terms of favorable interactions between the NS-GQD and the NaNT acting as proper connectors. Finally, our QDSSC prototype exhibits promising values for diffusion coefficient and recombination times as evidenced by means of impedance modulated photocurrent and photovoltage spectroscopies. Also, we consider that these materials could be further explored for electron transport layers applications in order to exploit the advantages regarding electron transport properties.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The sensing of fluoride ion through convenient and inexpensive methods has become significant analytical goals. The state-of-the-art involves the supporting of urea/thiourea optical discrete anion sensors into a polymeric scaffold. Nevertheless, high levels of selectivity are difficult to achieve, since the colorimetric/fluorometric response is also quenched by other anions such as dihydrogenphosphate. In this work we present, for the first time, the design of a polymeric optical fluoride chemosensor by using the anion-imprinting technique. First, four polymerizable anion receptors containing a urea-type binding site and different fluorophores as signaling units were prepared. One of them (1-(4-vinylphenyl)-3-(1-naphtyl)-urea) shows the most intense fluorescence emis sion in solution, exhibiting high optical sensitivity only for F– and H2PO4– . The electronic and structural features behind the optical response and anion affinity were elucidated through experimental and computational tools. To enhance the optical sensitivity and selectivity, a fluoride-imprinted polymeric optical sensor was prepared starting from this soluble sensor. The fluorescent emission is 13 times higher for the polymer and it is switched off only in the presence of fluoride, while for the rest of the anions, including H2PO4– , there was almost no optical response. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fluoride-imprinted polymeric optical sensor reported so far.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Food-waste reduction could provide significant benefits in the transition towards more sustainable agri-food systems. Households account for a significant share of total food waste, both in emerging and industri alized countries. In Latin America and the Caribbean region, lack of data has been acknowledged. The present study explores household food waste in Uruguay, an emerging country, through food-waste diaries. Data from 142 households provided an estimate of food-waste quantity and composition comparable to those reported in developed countries. The economic value of food wasted monthly represented 11 per cent of the average per capita food expenditure. In terms of environmental impact, the average carbon footprint of household food waste was 0.15 tonnes of CO2 per person per year. These results highlight the need to develop communication campaigns and interventions to raise awareness of the multiple impacts of household food waste in Uruguay.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Food waste threatens the sustainability of global food systems, with fruits and vegetables representing the largest share. A significant share of this waste stems from fruit and vegetable parts perceived as inedible, where culturally sensitive barriers to their consumption arise. This study explored consumers' perception of edibility and self-reported consumption of various fruit and vegetable parts in Uruguay. An online study with 531 participants used images to assess perceived edibility; respondents indicated reasons for non-consumption or described typical preparation methods. Although most participants recognized parts such as peels, stems, and seeds as edible, a relevant proportion did not consume them regularly. Reported barriers included safety concerns, sensory characteristics, and ingrained habits. In contrast, participants who consumed these parts identified various preparation methods and culinary uses that could support the repurposing of commonly discarded edible parts.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The full utilization of the main components in the lignocellulosic biomass is the major goal from a biorefinery point of view, giving not only environmental benefits but also making the process economically viable. In this sense the solid residue obtained in bioethanol production after steam explosion pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentation of the lignocellulosic biomass, was studied for further valorization. Two different residues were analyzed, one generated by the production of cellulosic ethanol from an energy crop such as switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) and the other, from wood (Eucalyptus globulus). The chemical composition of these by-products showed that they were mainly composed of lignin with a total content range from 70 to 83% (w/w) and small amounts of cellulose and hemicellulose. The present work was focused on devising a new alternative for processing these materials, based on the ability of the ionic liquids (IL) to dissolve lignocellulosic biomass. The resulting mixture of biopolymers and IL constituted the raw material for developing new insoluble biocatalysts. Active hydrogels based on fungal laccase from Dichostereum sordulentum 1488 were attained. A multifactorial analysis of the main variables involved in the immobilization process enabled a more direct approach to improving hydrogel-bound activity. These hydrogels achieved a 97% reduction in the concentration of the estrogen ethinylestradiol, an emerging contaminant of particular concern due to its endocrine activity. The novel biocatalysts based on fungal laccase entrapped on a matrix made from a by-product of second-generation bioethanol production presents great potential for performing heterogeneous catalysis offering extra value to the ethanol biorefinery.</dcterms:abstract>
