In this context, the aims of the present work were: (a) to study the effect of appearance (color and transparency) and fragrance on conceptual associations and expectations of liquid hand soap and (b) to evaluate if preference patterns moderate such effect. Eight samples of liquid hand soap were obtained following a full factorial design with three 2-level variables: fragrance (herbal vs. fruity), color (green vs. orange), and transparency (transparent vs. pearly). Samples were evaluated by 104 female participants, who rated their liking and used a check-all-that-apply question to describe the samples in terms of sensory characteristics, expected functional aspects of the product, and conceptual associations. Results showed that appearance and transparency did not influence consumer liking. However, fragrance had a significant effect on consumer liking, expectations and conceptual associations of liquid hand soap. The effect of fragrance on expectations and conceptual associations depended on consumer liking of the fragrance. In addition, pearly appearance did not influence liking but had a significant effect on consumer expectations regarding functional aspects of the liquid hand soap. Semiconductor nanoparticle-mediated photocatalysis is an attractive option for water decontamination, being the semiconductors as SnS2 with a bandgap in the visible region, the most promising materials. In the present work, we evaluated the influence of important parameters in the photocatalytic application of SnS2 nanoparticles. Our results show that the presence of citric acid (used as a capping agent) restricts the formation of hexagonal nanoparticles. We also demonstrated that using thioacetamide as a sulfur source results in smaller nanoparticles than thiourea, 24.0 nm and 616 nm respectively. Moreover, small hexagonal nanoparticles play a key role in the photocatalytic activity of SnS2 nanoparticles. Compared with TiO2 performance, SnS2 nanoparticles exhibited faster kinetics for methyl orange (MO) degradation, Kapp = 0.0102 min−1, and 0.029 min−1, respectively. We proved that SnS2 is capable of breaking the azo bond of methyl orange by direct reduction. Furthermore, our analyses indicate that SnS2 nanoparticles do not degrade atrazine and imazapic, but the photocatalytic route of metribuzin competed with photolysis, resulting in a particular transformation product that was not obtained with light irradiation only. We demonstrated that SnS2 nanoparticles have high bond selectivity for azo breaking. Furthermore, they represent an advance for the development of designed materials (such as heterostructures), where the properties of SnS2 can be tuned. Renewable hydrogen produced from biomass as an energy vector appears as one of the most promising alternatives to solve, partially at least, the actual environmental and energetic problems. In this sense, a novel series of Ni catalysts supported on rare-earth zirconates (La and Y) for hydrogen production through bioethanol steam reforming were prepared by sol-gel technique and subsequently calcined at 700 and 950 ◦C. Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. and Baccharis microdonta DC. (Asteraceae) are woody species morphologically similar growing in Uruguay, where not taxonomists people often confuse them in field conditions. As the essential oil of B. dracunculifolia (‘vassoura’ oil) is highly prized by the flavor and fragrance industry, the correct differentiation of the two species is a key factor in exploiting them profitably and reasonably. To differentiate both Baccharis species, in this work their volatile expression profiles were studied as an alternative tool to determine authenticity and quality. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were monthly extracted during an entire year from aerial parts of wild populations by simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE), and studied by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS; identification) and conventional gas chromatography (GC-FID; component abundances determination). Enantioselective gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Es-GC/MS) was applied in the search of parameters able to ensure genuineness of each species extract. Qualitative VOCs profiles were found to be similar for both species, being β-pinene, limonene, spathulenol, caryophyllene oxide, and viridiflorol the main components. However, the abundance of those VOCs were two to ten times higher in B. dracunculifolia than in B. microdonta during the year of study. These Baccharis spp. showed species-specific patterns of VOCs expression according to the seasonality, and interestingly, oxygenated compounds (transpinocarveol and myrtenal) increased their abundances at full-flowering stages. The enantiomeric distribution of selected monoterpenes (α- and β-pinenes, limonene, linalool, terpinen-4-ol, and α-terpineol) presented differential values for both Baccharis spp., meaning that Es-GC might be a useful tool for differentiating chemically both species in Uruguay for genuineness determination purposes. Cystic echinococcosis is a globally distributed zoonosis caused by cestodes of the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) complex, with Echinococcus ortleppi mainly involved in cattle infection. Protoscoleces show high developmental plasticity, being able to differentiate into either adult worms or metacestodes within definitive or intermediate hosts, respectively. Their outermost cellular layer is called the tegument, which is important in determining the infection outcome through its immunomodulating activities. Herein, we report an in-depth characterization of the tegument of E. ortleppi protoscoleces performed through a combination of scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Using electron tomography, a three-dimensional reconstruction of the tegumental cellular territories was obtained, revealing a novel structure termed the ‘tegumental vesicular body’ (TVB). Vesicle-like structures, possibly involved in endocytic/exocytic routes, were found within the TVB as well as in the parasite glycocalyx, distal cytoplasm and close inner structures. Furthermore, parasite antigens (GST-1 and AgB) were unevenly localised within tegumental structures, with both being detected in vesicles found within the TBV. Finally, the presence of host (bovine) IgG was also assessed, suggesting a possible endocytic route in protoscoleces. Our data forms the basis for a better understanding of E. ortleppi and E. granulosus s.l. structural biology. Arthrospira platensis has stood out, especially due to its high protein content and its potential for food application. However, the exploration of protein concentration techniques of this microalgae still presents a great challenge. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the purification of A. platensis proteins by applying two different aqueous two-phase systems (ATS) composed of potassium phosphate and ethanol, and sodium citrate and ethanol, in addition to the association with membrane separation process (MSP), and the characterization of the fractions obtained. ATS under the optimised conditions (19% potassium phosphate and 30% ethanol, and 19.5% sodium citrate and 29% ethanol) resulted in 1.27 and 1.31 purity, and 77.45% and 78% recovery, respectively. The sodium citrate and ethanol ATS showed significantly greater purity; thus, the upper phase was submitted to MSP. The association of ATS and MSP increased the recovery (~ 87%) and the purity (1.5). The top phase of ATS showed higher protein content (61%) than the bottom (5.9%), confirming the protein preference to the top. When the MSP was evaluated, the protein was increased about 8.0%, and antioxidant activity was kept (42 and 40% to top phase and ATS/MSP concentrate, respectively). Emulsions formed by ATS top phase showed a lower droplet size (33.69 μm D4.3 and 6.02 μm D3.2), and a significantly lower degree of overall destabilization (0.04 × 10– 6 s−1 kh and 3.54 × 10–3 s−1 ks) than those stabilized with bottom phase and MSP/ATS concentrate. The aim of the present study was to develop a mixed tropical fruit juice of cashew apple, acerola and melon with low added-sugar content considering sensory and nutritional aspects. Five formulations were developed varying the concentration of the different fruits. A total of 172 consumers rated their overall liking using a 9-point hedonic scale and described their sensory characteristics using a Check-all-that-apply question. In addition, the functional properties of the juices were evaluated by analyzing vitamin C, total phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity. Results showed that the addition of sugar and fruit composition affected the sensory characteristics and consumer liking of the formulations. Samples without added sugar and with higher melon concentration showed lower liking scores (p<0.05). In addition, the highest concentration of acerola had a positive effect on nutritional characteristics. The formulation with 50% of fruit pulp (60% of cashew apple, 30% of acerola and 10% of melon), 47% of water, and 3% of added sugar achieved the best results. The effect of aroma on sweetness perception was investigated by adding identical to natural aromas of melon, apple and pineapple to the selected formulation. However, aroma did not significantly modify sweetness perception, evaluated using a rate-all-that-apply question. For 600 MPa treatments and 6 log CFU/g load of STEC, ~5 log CFU/g reductions were obtained with all strains. For 450 MPa, differences in baroresistance among strains became evident. When inoculating O157:H7 at different loads, counts after 600 MPa fell below quantification limits, though virulence genes were detected for the two highest loads. Additionally, HHP reduced native aerobic microbiota to <1 log CFU/g and slightly affected a* and b* color values. Montecarlo simulation was used to estimate potential initial counts of STEC that allow compliance with existing regulatory limits after applying HHP, showing that absence of STEC studied can be achieved in 65 g of patties provided initial loads are ~2 log CFU/g. Finally, HHP treatments at 600 MPa and mild temperatures can be considered a valid non-thermal processing technology to achieve 5 log CFU/g reductions. In this work, Li doped TiO2(B) was modelled throughout the implementation of density functional theory with Hubbard methodology (DFT + U) in order to understand its vibrational and thermodynamics properties. Firstly, we performed structural, electronic structure and charge density difference studies in order to find accurately modelled systems. The electronic structure analysis shows that the lithiated systems have a metallic character and a n-type behavior, also the asymmetric DOS reveals that a small induced magnetic moment is present. The charge density difference analysis confirmed that the charge transfer is from the Li to the oxide. The vibrational properties studies present the undiscovered irreducible representation of the Li-TiO2(B) systems and its phononic densities. Moreover, the Raman spectroscopy studies of the bulk show great correspondence with experimental literature and the novel spectra obtained of the doped systems show a dispersion and displacement of the peaks. Additionally, the thermodynamic properties studies show evidence that both doped systems show promising features. Therefore, the results obtained here are innovative and can be used as reference connected with future experimental studies of this material, which has potential to be employed as a Li-ion battery anode. Herein, we studied the adsorption of 15 organic and three polar molecules onto pristine and fluorinated graphene. Two levels of fluorination were selected, CF fluorographene for which all carbon atoms are fluorinated and C4F fluorinated graphene, which maximizes the number of Clar sextets. Five different density functionals were employed: M06-L, M06-2X, PBE-D2 and PBE-D3BJ. In contrast with recent experimental investigations, we found that the adsorption energies for organic molecules onto perfect graphene are significantly lower than those determined for fluorographene. This situation is exacerbated when enthalpic and free energy corrections are included. However, a different scenario was found for polar molecules such as H2O, H2O2 and HF. Partial fluorination following a C4F pattern leads to significantly lower adsorption energies for these three molecules, and the superhydrophilicity of C4F is maintained after thermodynamic corrections are included. In fact, even the removal of a single fluorine atom results in a dramatic change in the adsorption energy of water on fluorographene. We discuss the performance of the density functionals assayed and the importance of using finite and infinite models. This work demonstrates that it is possible to adjust the adsorption energy of a given polar molecule onto graphene by controlling the fluorination level and in doing so, that partially fluorinated graphene models may open new avenues for the separation of molecules with different polarity. Detection of sulfuryl fluoride (SO2F2) and thionyl fluoride (SOF2) can be used to find out the degradation of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), indicating gas insulation switchgear equipment failures. In the present work, we study through first-principle DFT calculations the SOF2 and SO2F2 adsorption on aluminium nitride nanosheets (AlNNS), with the aim of to evaluate the performance of this nanomaterial as gas sensor. First, we performed an energetic, geometric and bonding analysis, obtaining considerable adsorption energy values for SO2F2 and SOF2 (−1.63 and −1.93 eV, respectively), which suggests these gases are chemisorbed on the AlN surface. Furthermore, certain SeF bonds were broken during adsorption, while new AleF and SeN overlaps were developed. Simultaneously, an important weakening was observed for AleN bonds close to the adsorption site. The adsorption selectivity of AlNNS toward SO2F2 and SOF2 was also studied, noting that other molecules normally present in air show a lower reactivity. Band structure and electronic density of states were realized in order to evaluate the sensing capacity of AlNNS surface. The obtained plots show a notorious narrowing of the band gap after gas adsorption, particularly in the case of SOF2, so an important change in the conductivity of AlNNS could be expected during gas exposition. Charge density analysis reveals an important charge transfer from AlNNS to both adsorbed gases, which suggest that this nanomaterial could behave as an n-type semiconductor. These results seem to indicate that AlNNS could act with good sensibility and selectivity for SOF2 and SO2F2 detection, showing high potential as gas sensing material. We previously showed in rats that ibogaine promotes a waking state with abnormal motor behavior along with a decrease in NREM and REM sleep. Here, we performed an indepth analysis of the intracranial electroencephalogram during “ibogaine wakefulness”. We found that ibogaine induces gamma oscillations that, despite having larger power than control levels, are less coherent and less complex. Further analysis revealed that this profile of gamma activity compares to that of natural REM sleep. Thus, our results provide novel biological evidence for the association between the psychedelic state and REM sleep, contributing to the understanding of the brain mechanisms associated with the oneirogenic psychedelic effect of ibogaine. Iboga alkaloids are a group of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids with promising and intriguing biological activities. Ibogaine is the representative member of the series and has become widely known as a potent atypical psychedelic with promising effects to treat substance use disorder. Nowadays, an efficient and scalable enantioselective total synthesis of ibogaine and related iboga alkaloids is still lacking, so direct extraction from natural sources or semi-synthetic schemes are the methods of choice to obtain them in a preparative scale. In particular, ibogaine can be obtained either by a low yielding direct isolation from Tabernanthe iboga or using a semi-synthetic procedure from voacangine, an iboga alkaloid occurring in a higher yield in the root bark of Voacanga africana. In this work, we describe an optimized process to obtain voacangine from V. africana root bark as a precursor of the iboga scaffold. Using a direct acetone-based extraction procedure (0.5 kg of root bark), voacangine was isolated in &sim;0.8% of root bark dried weight, while the major alkaloids isolated from the bark were identified as iboga-vobasinyl dimers (&sim;3.7%) such as voacamine and voacamidine. Since these alkaloids contain the voacangine moiety in their structure, the cleavage of the dimers was further optimized, affording an extra amount of voacangine in &sim;50% isolated molar yield. In this manner, the total amount of voacangine obtained by application of the whole procedure to the plant material (extraction and dimer cleavage) could almost duplicate the content originally found in the root bark. Fungi have been reported as common inhabitants of the maritime waters in Antarctica by studies based on culture-dependent methods. More recently, results obtained using DNA sequencing technologies, revealed that fungal diversity worldwide has been underestimated by culture methods. The present study provides the first characterization of fungal communities in the coastal waters of King George Island (maritime Antarctica) using both culture-dependent and high-throughput sequencing (HTS) methods. HTS demostrated a higher level of fungal diversity than the obtained by culture methods. A high prevalence of basidiomycetous yeasts and ascomycetous filamentous fungi was confirmed by both methods, however, Chythriomycota, Rozellomycota, lichenized fungi and Malassezia spp. were detected only by HTS. Correspondingly, members of some genera, such as Metschnikowia, were only found by culture-dependent methods. Our results confirm that culturing and HTS, should be seen as complementary approaches that enable one to obtain a more comprehensive picture of the composition of microbial communities. Polyreactive antibodies (pAb) bind to a broad range of unrelated structures, providing hosts with functional components able to rapidly recognize and protect against different pathogens. However, their roles against helminth parasites are still unexplored. Here, pAb profiles were analysed in cystic echinococcosis (CE), a zoonosis caused by the cestode Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. Levels of anti-DNP (2,4-dinitrophenyl-hapten) antibodies were measured as a surrogate parameter of pAb in different biological settings. Firstly, levels of serum and peritoneal pAb were measured during early experimental secondary CE, using both high (Balb/c) and low (C57Bl/6) susceptible mouse strains. Serum pAb mostly differed in normal mice, being pAb levels of IgG subclasses with poor anti-parasite activities predominant in Balb/c animals. Conversely, peritoneal pAb isotypes/subclasses with efficient anti-parasite activities predominated in normal and infected C57Bl/6 mice. Secondly, sera from potentially resistant patients, susceptible individuals and healthy donors were analysed, showing higher pAb levels of the IgA and IgG—particularly IgG1—isotypes in potentially resistant individuals compared to control groups. Finally, since remarkable differences were observed in pAb profiles according to the intrinsic host susceptibility to the infection, we proposed here that pAb might be considered as potential humoral biomarkers for host resistance to CE. Haemonchus contortus, a blood-sucking parasite of small ruminants, produces very important economic losses in the productive sector. This abomasum parasite has become resistant to most commercial drugs worldwide, and alternatives to fight this problem are urgently needed. Essential oils (EO) are a complex mixture of volatile secondary metabolites, composed mainly by terpenoids and phenolic compounds, from plants that have several pharmacological properties, including anthelmintic activity. Particularly, citrus peel is a source of cold-pressed EO, where limonene is its major component, and can be used as an additional food component for ruminants. The aim of the present work was to determine the in vitro anthelmintic activity of EO from Citrus bergamia (EOB), C. x paradisii (EOG) and limonene against the benzimidazole-susceptible Kirby isolate of H. contortus, using the egg hatch test (EHT) and the exsheathed third stage larval motility test (XLMT) using a WMicroTracker equipment. Albendazole (ABZ) and monepantel (MON) were used as positive controls. The 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC50) in XLMT were 8.77 and 13.88 μg/ml for EOB and EOG respectively, after an incubation of 72 h. An interesting observation on XLMT resulted when the positive controls were tested on the same plate, but in different well of the EOB. The volatile components of the EO significantly influenced (P < 0.05) the percentage of larval motility, reducing values from 66.9 to 19.6% for ABZ, and from 72.8 to 33.7% for MON, when comparing the activity of positive controls in a control plate without EO. The in vitro anthelmintic activity of EOB and EOG shows that they could be interesting candidates for nematode control. It is still necessary additional studies against the adult stage of H. contortus in efficacy trials in infected animals to validate their anthelmintic activity. The present investigation aimed to provide novel information on the chemical composition and in vitro bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds from raw citrus pomaces (mandarin varieties Clemenule and Ortanique and orange varieties Navel and Valencia). The effects of the baking process on their bioaccessibility was also assessed. Samples of pomaces and biscuits containing them as an ingredient were digested, mimicking the human enzymatic oral gastrointestinal digestion process, and the composition of the digests were analyzed. UHPLC-MS/MS results of the citrus pomaces flavonoid composition showed nobiletin, hesperidin/neohesperidin, tangeretin, heptamethoxyflavone, tetramethylscutellarein, and naringin/narirutin. The analysis of the digests indicated the bioaccessibility of compounds possessing antioxidant [6.6–11.0 mg GAE/g digest, 65.5–97.1 �mol Trolox Equivalents (TE)/g digest, and 135.5–214.8 �mol TE/g digest for total phenol content (TPC), ABTS, and ORAC-FL methods, respectively; significant reduction (p < 0.05) in Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) formation under tert-butyl hydroperoxide (1 mM)-induced conditions in IEC-6 and CCD-18Co cells when pre-treated with concentrations 5–25 �g/mL of the digests], anti-inflammatory [significant reduction (p < 0.05) in nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 macrophages], and antidiabetic (IC50 3.97–11.42 mg/mL and 58.04–105.68 mg/mL for �-glucosidase and �-amylase inhibition capacities) properties in the citrus pomaces under study. In addition, orange pomace biscuits with the nutrition claims “no-added sugars” and “source of fiber”, as well as those with good sensory quality (6.9–6.7, scale 1–9) and potential health promoting properties, were obtained. In conclusion, the results supported the feasibility of citrus pomace as a natural sustainable source of health-promoting compounds such as flavonoids. Unfractionated orange pomace may be employed as a functional food ingredient for reducing the risk of pathophysiological processes linked to oxidative stress, inflammation, and carbohydrate metabolism, such as diabetes, among others. The growing incidence of non-communicable diseases makes the search for natural sources of bioactive compounds a priority for such disease prevention/control. Achyrocline satureioides (‘marcela’), a plant rich in polyphenols and native to Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina, could be used for this purpose. Data on its antidiabetic/antiobesity properties and cellular uptake of bioactive compounds are lacking. The potentiality of non-thermal technologies such as highhydrostatic pressure (HP) to enhance polyphenol extraction retains attention. Thus, in the present study aqueous and ethanolic marcela extracts with/without assisted-HP processing were chemically characterized and assessed for their in vitro antioxidant capacity, antidiabetic and antiobesity activities, as well as cellular cytotoxicity and uptake on intestinal cell monolayers (TC7-cells, a clone of Caco-2 cells). Aqueous and ethanolic conventional extracts presented different polyphenolic profiles characterized mainly by phenolic acids or flavonoids, respectively, as stated by reverse phase-high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) analyses. In general, ethanolic extracts presented the strongest bioactive properties and HP had none or a negative effect on in vitro bioactivities comparing to conventional extracts. TC7-cell viability and cellular uptake demonstrated in conventional and HP-assisted extracts, highlighted the biological effects of marcela bioactive compounds on TC7-cell monolayers. TC7-cell studies showed no HP-induced cytotoxicity. In sum, marcela extracts have great potential as functional ingredients for the prevention/treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes. The present work addresses some fundamental aspects in the preparation of protein-conjugated gold nanoparticles, in order to ensure an appropriate final product. Ten broadly available and/or easy to implement analytical tools were benchmarked and compared in their capacity to provide reliable and conclusive information for each step of the procedure. These techniques included transmission electron microscopy, UV/VIS spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta-potential, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, colloidal stability titration, end-point colloidal stability analysis, cyclic voltammetry, agarose gel electrophoresis and size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). Four different proteins widely used as adaptors or blocking agents were tested, together with 13 nm gold nanoparticles containing different surface chemistries. Among all tested techniques, some of the least popular among nanomaterial scientists probed to be the most informative, including colloidal stability, gel electrophoresis and SEC; the latter being also an efficient purification procedure. These three techniques provide low-cost, low time consuming, sensitive and robust ways to assess the success of the nanoparticle bioconjugation steps, especially when used in adequate combinations. In this work we present the synthesis of nanoscale heterostructures comprising sodium titanate nanotubes Na2Ti2O5·H2O (NaNT) decorated with CuInS2 (CIS) quantum dots with different sizes and weight fractions. Our study focused on the structural, microstructural, electrical and optical characterization of the nanoscale heterostructure by means of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering, confocal Raman microscopy, UV–Vis and impedance spectroscopy analyses. In most cases, these nanoscale heterostructures exhibited considerable enhancement on the electrical conductivity explained in terms of efficient interconnections between the titanate nanotubes and CIS quantum dots. UV–Vis spectroscopy characterization showed a decrease in the optical band gap in comparison to the pure NaNT from 3.68 to 3.45 eV. Impedance spectroscopy analysis confirmed the efficient electrical interconnections between titanate nanotubes, yielding not only to a decrease in the titanate junction resistance but also to an apparent decrease in the junction barrier voltage. All these features could postulate these nanoscale heterostructures as good candidates as photoelectrodes in solar cell applications. In this work we present the synthesis, optical and electrical characterization of nanoparticles of iron doped anatase and iron doped sodium titanate high aspect ratio nanostructures (Na2Ti2O5⋅H2O). Our study focused mainly in the study of the electronical structure and the derived properties of the dielectric function by DFT (Density Functional Theory) means and their relationship with experimental measurements of optical band gap and electric impedance spectroscopy. Also, structural and morphological characterizations of the systems were carried on by X-ray powder diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. It was possible for the doped nanostructures to observe a slight red shift in the band gap of about 0.2 eV and an order of magnitude decrease in the global resistance in the doped system.
