Hanseniaspora is the main genus of the apiculate yeast group that represents approximately 70% of the grape-associated microflora. Hanseniaspora vineae is emerging as a promising species for quality wine production compared to other non-Saccharomyces species. Wines produced by H. vineae with Saccharomyces cerevisiae consistently exhibit more intense fruity flavors and complexity than wines produced by S. cerevisiae alone. In this work, genome sequencing, assembling, and phylogenetic analysis of two strains of H. vineae showed that it is a member of the Saccharomyces complex and it diverged before the whole-genome duplication (WGD) event from this clade. Specific flavor gene duplications and absences were identified in the H. vineae genome compared to 14 fully sequenced industrial S. cerevisiae genomes. The increased formation of 2-phenylethyl acetate and phenylpropanoids such as 2-phenylethyl and benzyl alcohols might be explained by gene duplications of H. vineae aromatic amino acid aminotransferases (ARO8 and ARO9) and phenylpyruvate decarboxylases (ARO10). Transcriptome and aroma profiles under fermentation conditions confirmed these genes were highly expressed at the beginning of stationary phase coupled to the production of their related compounds. The extremely high level of acetate esters produced by H. vineae compared to that by S. cerevisiae is consistent with the identification of six novel proteins with alcohol acetyltransferase (AATase) domains. The absence of the branched-chain amino acid transaminases (BAT2) and acyl coenzyme A (acyl-CoA)/ethanol O-acyltransferases (EEB1) genes correlates with H. vineae's reduced production of branched-chain higher alcohols, fatty acids, and ethyl esters, respectively. Our study provides sustenance for understanding and potentially utilizing genes that determine fermentation aromas.IMPORTANCE The huge diversity of non-Saccharomyces yeasts in grapes is dominated by the apiculate genus Hanseniaspora Two native strains of Hanseniaspora vineae applied to winemaking because of their high oenological potential in aroma and fermentation performance were selected to obtain high-quality genomes. Here, we present a phylogenetic analysis and the complete transcriptome and aroma metabolome of H. vineae during three fermentation steps. This species produced significantly richer flavor compound diversity than Saccharomyces, including benzenoids, phenylpropanoids, and acetate-derived compounds. The identification of six proteins, different from S. cerevisiae ATF, with diverse acetyltransferase domains in H. vineae offers a relevant source of native genetic variants for this enzymatic activity. The discovery of benzenoid synthesis capacity in H. vineae provides a new eukaryotic model to dilucidate an alternative pathway to that catalyzed by plants' phenylalanine lyases.

Technetium-99m has a rich coordination chemistry that offers many possibilities in terms of oxidation states and donor atom sets. Modifications in the structure of the technetium complexes could be very useful for fine tuning the physicochemical and biological properties of potential 99mTc radiopharmaceuticals. However, systematic study of the influence of the labelling strategy on the “in vitro” and “in vivo” behaviour is necessary for a rational design of radiopharmaceuticals. Herein we present a review of the influence of the Tc complexes’ molecular structure on the biodistribution and the interaction with the biological target of potential nitroimidazolic hypoxia imaging radiopharmaceuticals presented in the literature from 2010 to the present. Comparison with the gold standard [18F]Fluoromisonidazole (FMISO) is also presented

A summary of the resource.
By means of first-principles calculations, we study the structural, electronic and mechanical properties of the newly synthesized boron–oxygen holey framework (Chem. Comm. 2018, 54, 3971). It has a planar structure formed by B3O3 hexagons, which are joined via strong covalent boron–boron bonds. The six B3O3 units are connected with six-fold symmetry exhibiting a large hole with a surface area of 23 Å2, which is ideal for the adsorption of alkalis. For neutral alkalis, we found that the adsorption energy of potassium is 14 and 12 kcal mol−1 larger than those determined for sodium and lithium, respectively. In contrast, for alkali cations, there is a clear preference for lithium over sodium and potassium. With regard to its electronic properties, it is an insulator with an electronic band gap of 5.3 eV, at the HSE level of theory. We further investigate the effect of strain on the band gap and find it a less efficient technique to tune the electronic properties. The wide optical gap of B3O3 can be utilized in ultraviolet (UV) applications, such as UV photodetectors, etc. Additionally, the 2D elastic modulus of B3O3 (53.9 N m−1) is larger than that of Be3N2, silicene, and germanene. Besides, we also report bilayer and graphite-like bulk B3O3 and furthermore, find that the optoelectronic properties of the bilayer can be tuned with an external electric field. The great tunability of optical properties from UV to the visible range offers a vast range of applications in optoelectronics.

Tomato bacterial canker caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis is one of the most important seed-borne tomato diseases around the globe. The disease was initially reported in 1993 in Iran, and it became a rising threat for the multibillion dollar tomato industry of the country during the last decade. In this study, using phylogeographic analyses, we determined genetic diversity and geographic distribution of C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis in Iran. Our field surveys showed that the pathogen is expanding into the southern and eastern areas of the country. Furthermore, multilocus sequence analysis and typing (MLSA/MLST) using the sequences of five housekeeping genes (atpD, gyrB, ppk, recA, and rpoB) revealed that 37 C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis strains isolated in Iran had high genetic diversity and placed in 15 sequence types (STs), while all the available 184 worldwide C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis sequences were placed in 43 STs. MLSA divided the worldwide C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis strains into two phylogroups (I and II). Among the 37 strains isolated in Iran, 30 strains clustered in phylogroup I, while 7 strains clustered in phylogroup II. Phylogeographic data inferred from the allelic profile of the five housekeeping genes suggested multiple introductions of C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis inoculum into Iran, while the geographic origin of the Iranian C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis strains remains undetermined. Further analyses using higher numbers of strains are warranted to decipher the evolutionary history of C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis in Iran. Additionally, stricter seed/transplant inspections are recommended to reduce the risk of pathogen expansion to areas with no history of the disease

The variable VHH domains of camelid single chain antibodies have been useful in numerous biotechnology applications due to their simplicity, biophysical properties, and abilities to bind to their cognate antigens with high affinities and specificity. Their interactions with proteins have been well-studied, but considerably less work has been done to characterize their ability to bind haptens. A high-resolution structural study of three nanobodies (T4, T9, and T10) which have been shown to bind triclocarban (TCC, 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)urea) with near-nanomolar affinity shows that binding occurs in a tunnel largely formed by CDR1 rather than a surface or lateral binding mode seen in other nanobody-hapten interactions. Additional significant interactions are formed with a non-hypervariable loop, sometimes dubbed "CDR4". A comparison of apo and holo forms of T9 and T10 shows that the binding site undergoes little conformational change upon binding of TCC. Structures of three nanobody-TCC complexes demonstrated there was not a standard binding mode. T4 and T9 have a high degree of sequence identity and bind the hapten in a nearly identical manner, while the more divergent T10 binds TCC in a slightly displaced orientation with the urea moiety rotated approximately 180° along the long axis of the molecule. In addition to methotrexate, this is the second report of haptens binding in a tunnel formed by CDR1, suggesting that compounds with similar hydrophobicity and shape could be recognized by nanobodies in analogous fashion. Structure-guided mutations failed to improve binding affinity for T4 and T9 underscoring the high degree of natural optimization.

As a fundamental part of their chemical education, first-year undergraduate students are substantially involved in laboratory activities. Despite the specific teaching staff choices on the main laboratory aims, students normally receive a vast amount of information during these activities. Apart from understanding theoretical content, fundamental skills such as manipulation, data collection and interpretation should be developed. In this context, learners could feel overwhelmed since they can only process a few pieces of information at a time. Indeed, our experience at the Universidad de la República (Uruguayan public university) shows that many first-year students are in fact not able to cope with all the information they receive during laboratory activities. As a result, many of them only follow the experimental protocol automatically, without gaining significant knowledge or developing the necessary skills. In this work, we assessed the use of new online interactive pre-laboratory activities implemented for 252 first-year university students enrolled in a 12-module General Chemistry laboratory course. The student choice of interactive versus more traditional material was evaluated together with observed preferences regarding the different interactive tools offered. Besides, an online pre-laboratory discussion forum was also implemented and assessed. Both the interactive material and the discussion forum were chosen freely by the majority of students (61% and 79%, respectively). Interestingly, the choice was to some extent modulated by student previous performance. Interactive pre-laboratory material was more frequently chosen by low previous performance students, whereas pre-laboratory forum was preferentially used by high previous performance students. Finally, the influence of these new materials on student laboratory performance was statistically analyzed. Other personal and academic variables were also taken into account. Interactive material access was positively correlated with the final laboratory marks for medium previous performance learners. On the other hand, for lower previous performance students, the academic discussion between teachers and partners promoted by the online forum was positively correlated with their academic performance.

Introduction Quillaja brasiliensis (St. A. ‐Hil. & Tul) Mart (Quillajaceae) is a species native to South America, which is rich in saponins. Saponins are used in different industries, so there is a constant demand for this type of compound. Based on the wide range of applications for the saponins found in this species, notably as immunoadjuvants, we conducted a comprehensive study of this tree and its saponins. Objective The purpose of this work is to complete the characterisation of the immunoadjuvant saponin fraction from Q. brasiliensis leaves and further study the saponin fraction obtained from Q. brasiliensis bark. Methodology Saponin fractions were studied using mass spectrometry in combination with classical methods of monosaccharide and methylation analysis. We performed direct infusion and liquid chromatography/electrospray ionisation ion trap multiple‐stage mass spectrometry (DI‐ESI‐IT‐MSn and LC‐ESI‐IT‐MS2). Results Seventy‐five saponins, 21 from leaves and 54 from bark, were tentatively identified according to their molecular mass, fragmentation pattern and chromatographic behaviour. This work represents the first investigation of saponins from the bark of Q. brasiliensis and some of them presented new structural motifs not previously reported in the genus Quillaja. Conclusion The efficiency and selectivity of the data dependent LC‐MS2 method allowed the rapid profiling of saponins from Q. brasiliensis. The results of the monosaccharide and methylation analysis performed in saponins from Q. brasiliensis fractions and Q. saponaria Molina (Quillajaceae) fraction gives further support to the structures proposed according to the mass spectral data, validating the strategy used in the present work.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of message framing on attitudes towards messages aimed at promoting the use of nutritional warnings, behavioural intention and actual behaviour, evaluated through visual attention to nutritional warnings and the choice of a snack product during a real choice task. DESIGN: Following a between-subjects design, participants were exposed to loss-framed nutrition messages, gain-framed nutrition messages or non-nutrition-related messages (control group). After evaluating the messages, participants were asked to select a snack product as a compensation for their participation. The experiment was conducted using an eye tracker. SETTING: Montevideo (Uruguay). PARTICIPANTS: Convenience sample of 201 people (18-51 years old, 58 % female). RESULTS: The average percentage of participants who fixated their gaze on the nutritional warnings during the choice task was slightly but significantly higher for participants who attended to nutrition messages (regardless of their framing) compared with the control group. Participants who attended to loss-framed messages fixated their gaze on the warnings for the longest period of time. In addition, the healthfulness of the snack choices was higher for participants exposed to nutrition-related messages compared with the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Results from the present work suggest that nutrition messages aimed at increasing awareness of nutritional warnings may increase consumers' visual attention and encourage more heathful choices. The framing of the messages only had a minor effect on their efficacy.

A pesar de la excepcional arquitectura y policromía del sitio arqueológico de Tambo Colorado, no ha habido trabajos de conservación ni en las estructuras arquitectónicas de tierra cruda, ni en las superficies. Estos trabajos requieren una comprensión adecuada del estado de conservación de la arquitectura del sitio y el análisis de los materiales utilizados. Con este propósito, los resultados del presente estudio pretenden explicar la naturaleza de los materiales (pigmentos) utilizados en las pinturas murales, así como determinar las fuentes de estos materiales (canteras). Para ello, pigmentos de cantera fueron investigados por la técnica de difracción de rayos X, usando radiación sincrotrón, y refinamiento estructural por el método de Rietveld. Se determinó la composición de los pigmentos, identificando las fases de anortita, hematita, cuarzo, clorita, halita, yeso, ortoclasa, illita, jarosita, calcita, caolinita, zinwaldita, cristobalita, anhidrita y albita. El refinamiento Rietveld confirmó la presencia de estas fases y determinó el porcentaje en peso de cada una de ellas.

The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of the addition of carboxymethyl chitosan on the structural properties and antilisterial activity of nisin-incorporated chitosan films. Chitosan and carboxymethyl chitosan solutions were prepared with different mass ratios and bacteriocin nisin was added (0, 1000 and 6000 IU/ml). Filmogenic solutions were cast, dried and their physico-chemical and antimicrobial properties were investigated. For the same chitosan/carboxymethyl chitosan mass ratio, the addition of NIS at 6000 IU/ml led to changes in the macro- and microstructure, as well as in physico-chemical properties of films. On the other hand, carboxymethyl chitosan had a plasticizing effect and enhanced the distribution of the bacteriocin within the biopolymer matrix. Moreover, nisin-incorporated blend films of chitosan and carboxymethyl chitosan were more effective against Listeria monocytogenes than their pure chitosan counterparts. This study showed that different formulations of nisin-incorporated composite films of chitosan and carboxymethyl chitosan may provide options for developing bioactive packaging to improve food safety.

Background: The production of recombinant proteins in mammalian cell lines is one of the most important areas in biopharmaceutical industry. Viral transcriptional promoters are widely used to express recombinant proteins in mammalian cell lines. However, these promoters are susceptible to silencing, thus limiting protein productivity. Some CpG islands can avoid the silencing of housekeeping genes; for that reason, they have been used to increase the production of recombinant genes in cells of animal origin. In this study, we evaluated the CpG island of the promoter region of the β-actin gene of Cricetulus griseous (Chinese hamster), associated to the Cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter, to increase recombinant antibodies production in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells. Results: We focused on the non-coding region of CpG island, which we called RegCG. RegCG behaved as a promoter, whose transcriptional activity was mainly commanded by the CAAT and CArG boxes of the proximal promoter. However, the transcription started mainly at the intronic region before the proximal transcription start site. While the CMV promoter was initially more powerful than RegCG, the latter promoter was more resistant to silencing than the CMV promoter in stable cell lines, and its activity was improved when combined with the CMV promoter. Thereby, the chimeric promoter was able to maintain the expression of recombinant antibodies in stable clones for 40 days at an average level 4 times higher than the CMV promoter. Finally, the chimeric promoter showed compatibility with a genetic amplification system by induction with methotrexate in cells deficient in the dihydrofolate reductase gene. Conclusions: We have generated an efficient synthetic hybrid transcription promoter through the combination of RegCG with CMV, which, in stable cell lines, shows greater activity than when both promoters are used separately. Our chimeric promoter is compatible with a genetic amplification system in CHO DG44 cells and makes possible the generation of stable cell lines with high production of recombinant antibodies. We propose that this promoter can be a good alternative for the generation of clones expressing high amount of recombinant proteins, essential for industrial applications.

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) plays a key role in regulating blood pressure and ACE inhibitors are first-line drugs for treating hypertension. Food protein-derived peptides with ACE inhibitory activity are natural and safe alternatives for both prevention and treatment of hypertension. The second most abundant whey protein, α-lactalbumin (ALA) was hydrolysed with proteases from Bromelia antiacantha Bertol., a native plant. Two new peptides with potent ACE-inhibitory activity: TTFHTSGY (IC50 = 142 μM) and GYDTQAIVQ (IC50 = 1.0 mM) were purified by affinity chromatography and sequences were determined by mass spectrometry. In silico analysis indicated that neither of these peptides was toxic (ToxinPred). Inhibition kinetic analysis showed that TTFHTSGY was a fully functional ACE competitive inhibitor, whereas GYDTQAIVQ caused only partial ACE inhibition. Our results indicate that cysteine peptidases from B. antiacantha hydrolyse ALA to produce novel ACE inhibitory peptides that could be useful even as functional food ingredients.

Tocopherol separations employing the same Kinetex™ C18 column via supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) and reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RP-LC) were compared. The application of the SFC system with UV diode array detection (DAD) resulted in rapid separation of all four tocopherol homologues with a total analysis time below 2 min. The RP-LC approach could not separate the isomers β and γ. The developed SFC-DAD method was precise, accurate, and most importantly more environmentally friendlier compared to the RP-LC method due to the 125-fold decrease in methanol consumption. The present study illustrated the selectivity differences between LC and SFC and how the C18 column can be used for tocopherol characterization. The optimized SFC method was successfully applied for the tocopherol determination in the seeds of nine different fruit species.

A summary of the resource.
First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to assess the stability, and geometric, mechanical, optical and electronic properties of monolayer graphene-like Be3N2. We find that Be3N2 is a large band gap semiconductor with small electron and hole effective masses, which may promote its use in nanoelectronic devices. Furthermore, its excellent thermal, dynamical, and mechanical stability makes it a material of comparable caliber to that of graphene. In addition, the excellent electrochemical properties of Be3N2 make it a unique material with possible theoretical capacities of 974 mA h g−1 for Li, Na, and K. Moreover, Be3N2 can form bulk graphite-like layered structures with two different configurations, i.e. N2–N1 and N2–Be1. Finally, the derivatives of Be3N2 (Be3N2 nanoribbons) also possess direct band gaps which can be finely tuned to the desired level by geometry and morphology constraints. Based on these fascinating properties, Be3N2 and its derivatives can find a broad range of applications in nanoelectronics and battery technologies.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
We investigate, by means of first‐principles density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the possibility of using hexagonal boron‐arsenide (h‐BAs) as an anode material for alkali‐based batteries. We show that the adsorption strength of alkali atoms (Li, Na, and K) on h‐BAs in comparison with graphene and other related materials changes a little as a function of alkali atom concentration. When the separation between alkali atoms and h‐BAs is less than the critical distance of ~5 Å, the adsorption energy abruptly increases showing fast adsorption without an energy barrier. Furthermore, the low energy barriers of 0.322, 0.187, and 0.0.095 eV for Li, Na, and K, respectively, ensure the fast ionic diffusivities for all the three alkali atoms. Additionally, the addition of these alkali atoms transforms the electronic properties of h‐BAs from semiconducting to metallic, resulting in improved electronic conductivities. Most interestingly, the excellent storage capacities of h‐BAs (~626 mAh/g) for alkali atoms make it a material of similar caliber to that of other popular anode materials. Finally, the average open circuit voltages are calculated and found to be in the desired range. In short, h‐BAs possess every quality that is crucial for an anode material and thus it is interesting to see h‐BAs in alkali‐based battery technologies.

The properties of mid-band-gap electronic states are central to the potential application of self-assembled, hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite-like quantum wells in optoelectronic technologies. We investigate broadband light emission from mid-band-gap states in fast-forming hybrid organic lead iodide quantum wells at room temperature. By comparing temperature- and intensity-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectra emitted from butyl ammonium spaced inorganic layers, we propose that structural defects in a metastable material phase trap excitons and cause broadband light emission spanning wavelengths between 600 and 1000 nm. We use temperature-dependent terahertz time-domain spectroscopy to correlate changes in the subgap PL emission with changes in the chemical bonding of the inorganic octahedral layer. Our results provide new fundamental physical insights into the array of mechanisms capable of inducing broadband light emission from low-dimensional perovskite-like materials central to their application in future optoelectronic technologies and novel spectroscopic tools to characterize these states.

We performed benchmark calculations to study the complexes of pyridine with beryllium, magnesium, and calcium. In all cases, the σ structures, in which the alkaline-earth element interacts with nitrogen, were found to be more stable than the ones featuring interactions with the π cloud. At the CCSD(T)/CBS level of theory, the dissociation energies (De) are 6.5, 3.7 and 7.2 kcal/mol, for beryllium, magnesium, and calcium, respectively. Our estimation of the D0 of the calcium-pyridine complex is in excellent agreement with the experimental value. For comparative purposes, we studied the performance of the M06-2X, PBE-D3BJ, vdW-DF, and B2PLYP-D2BJ density functionals. All of the DFT methods employed significantly overestimated the dissociation energies. Finally, in light of the results obtained, pyridinic nitrogen is the doping configuration to be chosen in nitrogen-doped graphene to improve the adsorption of alkaline-earth elements on this material.

The adsorption of alkali atoms (Li, Na, and K) on graphene and hexagonal boron phosphide (h-BP) is studied by means of various density functionals including semi-local GGA, dispersion corrected DFT-D, meta-GGA, and many of the available non-local vdW-DF functionals. The accurate interaction energies are crucial for energy storage and battery applications as it is directly related to key properties in electrochemistry, such as storage capacities in general, and open circuit voltages (OCVs), in particular. A wider range of adsorption strength is predicted depending on the choice of non-local vdW-DF functionals. Furthermore, the performance of vdW-DF functionals was found to be independent of the choice of pseudopotentials used and especially if the choice is revPBE. Additionally, an excellent agreement is found between the Gaussian, VASP, and QE codes. Moreover, the h-BP is found to be an exceptional anode material for alkali batteries which can compete with any other available anode material. The small change in the adsorption energies as a function of increasing concentration of alkali atoms is a unique characteristic of h-BP. The exceptional 1283 mAh/g storage capacity not only for Li but in contrary with the previous study, also for Na in addition to the 642 mAh/g for K at vdW-DF/DZP level makes it a prominent candidate to be used as anode material. The average open circuit voltage for Li, Na, and K was also found to be in superb range. However, the values are found to be sensitive to the choice of functional, and in some cases, the storage capacity can be predicted as high as twice of the actual values. Therefore, the accurate description of the interaction is crucial and this study can be used to further refine the non-local DFT functionals. Moreover, by virtue of these properties, h-BP can be the best choice to be used as an anode material not only in LIBS but also in SIBs and KIBs.

Herein, we perform DFT calculations to study the stability and the electronic and optical properties of pristine and hybrid bilayers of hexagonal boron phosphide (h-BP) and hexagonal boron arsenide (h-BAs). The electronic and optical properties of all bilayers can be modulated by the introduction of an external perpendicular electric field. Consequently, band gaps can be tuned from 0.8 eV down to zero as the field increases up to a critical value. Above this value, the gap reopens as the valence and conduction bands exhibit an anticrossing with a “Mexican-hat” shape, in a similar fashion to biased graphene bilayers. For the optical properties, we report an intense peak in the absorption spectra around 2.5–2.6 eV, with a slight blueshift as a function of electric field. Above the critical field, a new peak is observed in the infrared region which exhibits a strong field dependence. Additionally, this peak is related to the optical transitions around the “Mexican-hat” region of the band structure and the corresponding electron-hole pair shows a layer separation, which may lead to larger recombination times, a critical factor in photovoltaics. We believe that, with such tunable properties, these bilayers can find interesting applications in future devices in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics.

We employ first‐principles DFT calculations to explore the potential use of BeN dual doped graphene (DDG) as an anode material for alkali‐based batteries. The introduction of BeN in graphene raise the adsorption of Li, Na, and K by 1.37 eV (2.23 times), 1.23 eV (2.83 times), and 1.14 eV (2.14 times), respectively. Furthermore, BeN DDG offers a modest energy barrier for alkali atoms studied. Moreover, the alkali atoms have good chemistry with Be and the interaction strength decreases during the migration toward N. Most importantly, the exceptional storage capacity of BeN DDG for Li (~2255 mAh/g), Na (~996 mAh/g), and K (~747 mAh/g) makes it a highly desirable anode material. Additionally, the average open circuit voltage offered for Li (0.66 V), Na (0.33 V), and (K = 1.10 V) is found to be in excellent range. All these outstanding properties provide the possibility of using BeN DDG in future alkali‐based batteries.

Herein, we predict the stability, structural and electronic properties of Janus-like boron arsenide (BAs) bilayer with the help of DFT calculations. We combine one hydrogenated and one fluorinated BAs layers in different stacking and arrangements. The interlayer charge transfer is also calculated and discussed with the help of various charge population mechanism. In addition to this, the choice of basis set is critical in determining the interlayer distances and consequently, the energy gaps. Additionally, the layer-resolved PDOS, at vdW-DF level, revealed that these bilayers are type-II semiconductors as the valence and conduction bands are composed of different layers. Furthermore, the band gap of these bilayers can efficiently be engineered from 0 to 0.54 eV by controlling the arrangement of the layers. That being said, the electronic properties can optionally be tuned from semiconducting to semimetallic. Additionally, the shape of the conduction band minima and the heavy-, light-hole bands provides the opportunity of utilization of these bilayers in ultrafast nanoelectronics.

The cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) assay is an established procedure used to measure antioxidant content. Recently, the CUPRAC assay was adapted for use in post column derivatisation coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-PCD). In prior works reported in the literature, CUPRAC HPLC-PCD assays used large post column mixing coils leading to a deterioration in the observed separation efficiency. In this work we used the CUPRAC PCD assay with reaction flow (RF) chromatography. No reaction loop was required, thus preserving the efficiency of the separation. We subsequently compared the performance of the CUPRAC assay to that of an antioxidant assay that we have previously converted to RF chromatography, namely the ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) assay, both in RF mode. The relative response factor with respect to trolox was measured for both RF assays via the separation of a standard mixture of 16 compounds. Sample analysis of coffee and green tea via both RF assays was used to compare their ability to screen for bioactive candidates in complex natural products. In general, the CUPRAC assay is recommended as the RF PCD methodology of choice as it provided a higher level of performance compared to the FRAP assay, demonstrating less baseline noise interference, greater sensitivity, wider linear dynamic range and better assay precision.

A summary of the resource.
Two novel multicomponent crystal forms of the prodrug 5-fluorocytosine (5-FC), an ionic cocrystal and a monohydrate salt, with 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (picric acid, PA) and 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNSA), respectively, were rationally designed and synthesized. Nitro compounds are used to treat many diseases, such as cancer, one of the 5-FC targets via gene-directed prodrug therapy. In addition, within the wide range of applications for nitro compounds is the formation of charge-transfer complexes with organic molecules. Among all 5-FC crystalline structures depicted, only two contain nitro compounds: a salt with PA and a dihydrate cocrystal with 5-nitrouracil. Therefore, the two new single translucent pale gold prism crystals of 5FC-PA and 5FC-DNSA were successfully obtained by slow evaporation from aqueous solution and characterized by X-ray diffraction (single crystal and powder), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), and Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopies. In both crystal structures, the 5-FC pyrimidine ring is protonated at the N3 atom and the respective packings are mainly stabilized by N–H⋯O H-bonds. For the 5FC-PA ionic cocrystal, the formation of triple H-bonds (two N–H⋯O and one charge assisted N–H+⋯N H-bonds) among the 5-FC molecules was observed. This is consistent with the expected stability of the duplex structure, which is considered the strongest association between two species. In addition to the structural study, Hirshfeld surface analysis was carried out based on the single crystal X-ray diffraction data. Thermal stability was assessed through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and hot-stage microscopy (HSM), indicating that these compounds are stable up to approximately 200 °C. The results contribute to the diversity of new 5-FC solid forms and introduce two novel compounds, with possible application in fungal/cancer medicine formulations or to better understand the behavior of cytosine in DNA/RNA base pairing.
