The addition mechanism of the OH-initiated oxidation of allyl methyl sulfide (AMS) under atmospheric conditions was studied theoretically using both density functional theory (DFT) and the SVECV-f12 composite method. We found that the addition does not occur directly but rather through a pre-reactive complex that serves as a previous stage for addition at both the C1 and C2 positions. However, based on thermodynamics the addition at C2 possibly occurs by branching of the C1 addition mechanism. Once the addition proceeds, the reaction with O2 under atmospheric conditions produces RO2 radicals that can decompose in multiple ways. Complex mechanisms of intramolecular rearrangement and decomposition both in the absence and presence of NOx have been examined. The thermodynamically most favourable decomposition paths produce 2-hydroxy-acetaldehyde, 2-methyl-thio-acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, and the methyl thiomethyl peroxy (MSP) intermediate. This latter species is proposed as the main source of sulfur dioxide (SO2), which is the product found in the highest yield during the experimental determinations.

SARS-CoV-2 surveillance of viral populations in wastewater samples is recognized as a useful tool for monitoring epidemic waves and boosting health preparedness. Next genera tion sequencing of viral RNA isolated from wastewater is a convenient and cost-effective strategy to understand the molecular epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 and provide insights on the population dynamics of viral variants at the community level. However, in low- and mid dle-income countries, isolated groups have performed wastewater monitoring and data has not been extensively shared in the scientific community. Here we report the results of moni toring the co-circulation and abundance of variants of concern (VOCs) of SARS-CoV-2 in Uruguay, a small country in Latin America, between November 2020—July 2021 using wastewater surveillance. RNA isolated from wastewater was characterized by targeted sequencing of the Receptor Binding Domain region within the spike gene. Two computa tional approaches were used to track the viral variants. The results of the wastewater analy sis showed the transition in the overall predominance of viral variants in wastewater from No-VOCs to successive VOCs, in agreement with clinical surveillance from sequencing of nasal swabs. The mutations K417T, E484K and N501Y, that characterize the Gamma VOC, were detected as early as December 2020, several weeks before the first clinical case was reported. Interestingly, a non-synonymous mutation described in the Delta VOC, L452R, was detected at a very low frequency since April 2021 when using a recently described sequence analysis tool (SAM Refiner). Wastewater NGS-based surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 is a reliable and complementary tool for monitoring the introduction and preva lence of VOCs at a community level allowing early public health decisions.This approach allows the tracking of symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals, who are generally under reported in countries with limited clinical testing capacity. Our results suggests that waste water-based epidemiology can contribute to improving public health responses in low- and middle-income countries.

<p>Objective: To assess the effects of three different front-of-package labelling (FOPL) schemes on objective understanding and intention to purchase of products, in Jamaica.</p>
<p>Setting: Supermarkets in Jamaica.</p>
<p>Participants: Adult supermarket shoppers in Jamaica (n=1206) aged 18 years old or older were included in the study, except for those visually impaired, or unable to give informed consent.</p>
<p>Design: Multiarm parallel-group randomised trial.</p>
<p>Interventions: Participants were randomly allocated to one of the three intervention groups or the control group. They were exposed to two-dimensional images of 12 mock-up products presented in random and balanced order. Participants assigned to the intervention groups were exposed to one FOPL scheme: black octagonal warning labels (OWL), magnifying glass high-in single icon (MGG) or traffic-light labelling (TFL). The control group was exposed to the nutrition facts up front.</p>
<p>Outcome measures: OR for correctly understanding nutritional information (correctly selecting the least harmful option, correctly identifying sugars, sodium and/or saturated fats found to be in excess) and choosing to purchase the least harmful option (purchase intention), more often.</p>
<p>Results: Compared with the control group, the odds for correctly selecting the least harmful option more often were 107% higher in the OWL group (OR 2.07, 95% CI 1.54 to 2.78; p<0.001), whereas the MGG (1.18, 95% CI 0.89 to 1.57; p=0.24) and the TFL (1.13, 95% CI 0.85 to 1.51; p=0.39) were inefficacious in improving such odds. OWL also resulted in the highest odds for correctly identifying a product with excessive amounts of sugars, sodium and/or saturated fats and for deciding to purchase the least harmful option or none of the options.</p>
<p>Conclusions: Octagonal warning labels performed best at improving the ability of adult shoppers in Jamaica to understand the nutrition information and at encouraging them to purchase the least harmful option more often.</p>

Bladder cancer is a worldwide problem and improved therapies are urgently needed. In the search for newer strong antitumor compounds, herein, we present the study of three nitric oxide-releasing compounds and evaluate them as possible therapies for this malignancy. Bladder cancer cell lines T24 and 253J were used to evaluate the antiproliferative, antimigratory, and genotoxic effects of compounds. Moreover, we determined the NF-κB pathway inhibition, and finally, the survivin downregulation exerted by our molecules. The results revealed that compounds 1 and 3 exerted a high antiproliferative activity against bladder cancer cells through DNA damage and survivin downregulation. In addition, compound 3 reduced bladder cancer cell migration. We found that nitric oxide donors are promising molecules for the development of a new therapeutic targeting the underlying mechanisms of tumorigenesis and progression of bladder cancer

The synthesis, crystal structures, and luminescence of two lanthanide polynuclear com plexes with the general formula [Ln2 (tda)3 (H2O)5 ]·3H2O (Ln = Sm, Eu; tda = thiodiacetato anion) are reported. The compounds were obtained by direct reaction of H2 tda and lanthanide(III) chloride in an aqueous solution. The choice of the conditions of synthesis was based on speciation studies. The structure of the polymeric complexes contains Ln(III) ions in a tricapped trigonal prism geometry. The versatility of this ligand provides different coordination modes and provokes the formation of thick 2D sheets. Direct excitation of the Ln(III) ions gives place to the characteristic intra-configuration sharp luminescence emission of both complexes in the solid state.

Conceptual 2D group III nitrides and oxides (e.g., 2D InN and 2D InO) in heterostructures with graphene have been realized by metal–organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). MOCVD is expected to bring forth the same impact in the advancement of 2D semiconductor materials as in the fabrication of estab lished semiconductor materials and device heterostructures. MOCVD employs metal–organic precursors such as trimethyl-indium, -gallium, and -aluminum, with (strong) metal–carbon bonds. Mechanisms that regulate MOCVD processes at the atomic scale are largely unknown. Here, we employ density functional molecular dynamics – accounting for van der Waals interactions – to identify the reaction pathways responsible for dissociation of the trimethylindium (TMIn) precursor in the gas phase as well as on top-layer and zero-layer graphene. The simulations reveal how collisions with hydrogen molecules, intramolecular or surface-mediated proton transfer, and direct TMIn/graphene reactions assist TMIn transformations, which ultimately enables delivery of In monomers or InH and CH3In admolecules, on graphene. This work provides knowledge for understanding the nucleation and intercalation mechanisms at the atomic scale and for carrying out epitaxial growth of 2D materials and graphene heterostructures.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Lauraceae family includes Nectandra angustifolia a species widely used in the folk medicine of South America against various maladies. It is commonly used to treat different types of processes like inflammation, pain, and snakebites. Snakes of the Bothrops genus are responsible for about 97% of the ophidic accidents in northeastern Argentina. Aim of the study: To evaluate the anti-snake activity of the phytochemicals present in N. angustifolia extracts, identify the compounds, and evaluate their inhibitory effect on phospholipase A2 (PLA2) with in vitro and in silico assays. Methods: Seasonal variations in the alexiteric potential of aqueous, ethanolic and hexanic extracts were evaluated by inhibition of coagulant, haemolytic, and cytotoxic effects of B. diporus venom. The chemical identity of an enriched fraction obtained by bio-guided fractioning was established by UPLC-MS/MS analysis. Molecular docking studies were carried out to investigate the binding mechanisms of the identified compounds to PLA2 enzyme from snake venom. Results: All the extracts inhibited venom coagulant activity. However, spring ethanolic extract achieved 100% inhibition of haemolytic activity. Bio-guide fractioning led to an enriched fraction (F4) with the highest haemolytic inhibition. Five flavonoids were identified in this fraction; molecular docking and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations indicated the binding mechanisms of the identified compounds. The carbohydrates present in some of the compounds had a critical effect on the interaction with PLA2. Conclusion: This study shows, for the first time, which compounds are responsible for the anti-snake activity in Nectandra angustifolia based on in vitro and in silico assays. The results obtained in this work support the traditional use of this species as anti-snake in folk medicine.

The study explored attitudinal and socio-demographic differences between potential buyers and non-buyers of lettuce grown in a vertical farming (VF) system. Data were col lected from people (n = 2193) in four countries—United States, Germany, Singapore, and Australia. Survey results demonstrated a clear link between positive VF attitude and intention to buy, and similarly for negative attitude and intention to not buy. A key differ ence between people with “lower” and “higher” purchase likelihood (more or less than 50% probability) was that the former were consistently less positive about the benefits of VF. The consumer groups largely perceived the disadvantages of VF similarly. Socio economic differences between the consumer groups related to country of living and hav ing children below the age of 18 living at home. The latter significantly increased the likeli hood that consumers would classify a having “higher” purchase likelihood for VF-grown lettuce. German participants were less likely to have a “higher” purchase likelihood.

The parasitic kinetoplastid diseases Leishmaniasis, Chagas disease and Human African Trypanosomiasis constitute serious threats for populations throughout the (sub-)tropics. Paullone-N5 -acetamides inhibit trypanothione synthe tase (TryS), an essential kinetoplastid enzyme, and exhibit antiparasitic activity in the low micromolar range, but lack the desired selectivity against mammalian cells (selectivity index (SI):<10). With the aim to identify the paullones’ moieties responsible for TryS inhibition and bioactivity, we applied molecular simplification and ring disconnection approaches. The new indolylacetamides lost activity against the expected molecular target (TryS) compared to the reference paullone MOL2008 (Leishmania infantum TryS IC50 :150 nM; Trypanosoma brucei bloodstream form EC50: 4.3 μM and SI: 2.4). However, several of them retained potency (T. b. brucei EC50: 2.4–12.0 μM) and improved selectivity (SI: 5 to >25).

Agricultural systems that classify as ‘beyond organic’ have the potential to advance sustainability efforts. The present research considers these emerging systems from a consumer insights perspective. Using biodynamic (BD) agriculture as an exemplar, public opinions were explored in a multi-method and multi-national study with samples of consumers in the United Kingdom (UK), Australia, Singapore, and Germany. Across 1237 participants, the empirical findings pointed to largely positive attitudes. Between-country differences were minor, whereas consumer segmentation identified pan-national groups of people with attitudes that were, respectively, BD Positive (71%), BD Neutral (20%) or BD Negative (9%). In the BD Positive segment, consumers responded positively to the environmental and social aspects of BD agriculture, and it mattered to them that BD agriculture was a balanced and integrated approach to farming/food production. That is, they were not averse to the holistic/ spiritual aspects that are unique to BD. Biodiversity, but also other aspects of environmental sustainability mattered more to consumers than social sustainability, notably worker welfare and community resilience. The research provides new consumer insights about biodynamics by being generic to BD agriculture rather than product specific (e.g., BD wine), and advances extant consumer research by jointly exploring environmental and social sustainability. Several practical implications emerge from the results.

Text highlighting is a new method for online sensory-consumer research where participants read a text while making use of highlighting functions to indicate content that they, respectively, ‘like’ and ‘dislike.’ In a recent series of papers, consumers have been found to approach the text highlighting task in a logical and systematic manner, and the results have been shown to deliver attitudinal insights about the focal topic that fit expectations. Building on the early successes of text highlighting, it was an obvious step to try to extend it to applications in product research which occupies a central role in sensory-consumer research. A case study with kiwifruit was performed with consumers in Singapore and Malaysia (n = 1140). Participants read a text (288 words, 19 sentences) which primarily described sensory, nutrition and health characteristics of green and gold kiwifruit. Focusing on 43 specific fruit characteristics, sentiment (difference between the frequency of ‘like’ and ‘dislike’ highlights) was higher for nutrition and health characteristics than for those describing sensory characteristics. Only the Chinese origin of kiwifruit and the hairy skin of green kiwifruit were negatively perceived overall. A novel use of penalty/lift analysis to identify the specific fruit characteristics that significantly influenced ex pected liking of kiwifruit confirmed the results based on sentiment scores. Moreover, a difference between the drivers of liking for gold and green kiwifruit was identified; the use of ‘like’ highlighting for sensory properties positively contributed to expected liking for gold kiwifruit only. The case study also demonstrated the potential to meaningfully segment consumers based on their highlighting responses to product specific characteristics. The results are discussed in the context of future applications of text highlighting in product research.

Perceived freshness is a key determinant of consumers’ food choices but remains an imprecisely defined concept. A comprehensive and consumer-centric definition of freshness appears to be lacking, and the present research was situated in this knowledge gap, seeking, in particular, to explore the complexity of freshness in consumers’ minds. People from the USA (n = 2092) took part in an online survey and completed a text highlighting task. Herein, participants read a text that described different aspects of freshness and the technologies used to prolong freshness during storage. While reading, they used highlighting functions within the software to indicate text content that they liked/disliked or agreed/disagreed with. The combined results from text highlighting and responses to the open-ended question “Considering the fruit you eat, why is freshness important to you?” confirmed that freshness is a complex construct with multiple dimensions and suggested that the complexity of freshness extends from food in general to specific product categories (in the case of fruit and apples). Further, the findings showed that freshness is desired by consumers because fruit are perceived as healthier and better tasting. The findings revealed negative attitudes towards stored fruit among participants, but also indicated some acceptance of the fact that some storage was unavoidable. Results provide useful insights to the development for communication strategies to increase consumer acceptance of stored apples and fruits in general.

Copper (Cu), iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) bioaccessibility was studied in beef, chicken, chickpeas, lentils, quinoa, soybeans, and tuna fish using an in vitro assay. Samples were cooked as usually consumed locally. Analytical determinations were performed by atomic absorption spectrometry. The samples that presented the highest bioaccessible fraction (BF) were soybeans (~87 %) (Cu), chickpeas (~78 %) (Fe), and quinoa (~92 %) (Zn), respectively. Zinc was the mineral that presented the highest BF value of all, being above 66 % in all food samples. The effect of garlic and onion on the BF was also evaluated, being the highest effects observed for quinoa with a percent increase of 26.9 % (Fe) promoted by garlic and 19.7 % (Zn) promoted by onion. The contribution of Cu, Fe and Zn to the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for adults over 19 years was esti mated, considering a 200 g portion. Soybeans and lentils contributed between 56.7 % and 78.9 % (men and women) to Cu RDA, chickpeas, lentils, and soybeans contributed an average of 34.6 % (men) and 15.4 % (women) to Fe RDA, while beef contributed an average of 65.5 % (men) and 90.1 % (women) to Zn RDA. This information shows that beef is a major source of Zn to the diet.

Digital marketing has seen a rapid rise in the last decade as a consequence of the increased popularity of social media. However, few studies so far have analyzed the prevalence and persuasive power of digital marketing of ultra-processed products. The present study aimed at: (i) analyzing the content of Instagram posts of ultra processed products through the lens of the heuristic-systematic model, and (ii) evaluating the influence of the content of the posts on user interactions. A search for Instagram accounts of ultra-processed products was per formed using a master list of products commercialized in the two most popular online supermarkets in Uruguay. For each of the identified Instagram accounts, all the content posted in a 6-month period was recorded (August 15th, 2020 to February 15th, 2021). The posts were analyzed using content analysis based on inductive coding, and gradient boosting models (GBMs) were used to address the second study objective. A total of 2178 Instagram posts promoting specific ultra-processed products or brands were identified. The posts included a diverse set of cues to trigger both systematic and heuristic processing. References to the pleasure derived from product con sumption as well as health-related cues were most prevalent. The GBM showed that references to contests and raffles and invitations to interact encouraged users to engage with the posts through posting comments. Taken together, results stress the need to implement comprehensive regulatory approaches to reduce exposure to and the power of digital marketing of ultra-processed products given the harmful health-related consequences associated with excessive consumption of such products

Trifluoroacetonitrile (CF3CN) is a decomposition product from the promising dielectric heptafluoro isobutyronitrile (C4F7N) under partial discharge process, so can be used to detect failures in gas-insulated switchgear. In this work, we study through density functional theory (DFT) calculations the adsorption of CF3CN on pristine aluminium nitride nanosheets (AlNNS) and defective Al-vacancy (vAl) and N-vacancy (vN) AlNNS, in order to explore the potential of these nanomaterials as sensors for this gas. Our energetic analysis shows negligible adsorption energy for the pristine surface but strong interactions can be observed between the molecule and the monovacancy-defected surfaces, with adsorption energy values estimated to be about − 2.2 and − 3.1 eV for CF3CN/vN-AlNNS and CF3CN/vAl-AlNNS, respectively, which suggests chemisorption processes. Furthermore, our geometric and bonding studies revealed the formation of new N—Al interactions between gas and monovacancy-defected surfaces, with serious distortions for the vAl-AlNNS nanosheet. The electronic density of states and band structure analysis reveals moderate band gap variations after gas adsorption. In contrast, significant changes in the work function and the magnetic moment of defective AlNNS were computed after gas exposition, for all optimized adsorption configurations. Therefore, based on our results, vacancy-defected AlNNS could be suggested as possible material for CF3CN gas sensing.

Low force stereolithography is exploited for the first time for one-step facile fabrication of chemiluminescence (CL) flow-through cells that bear unrivalled features as compared to those available through milling or blowing procedures or alternative 3D printing technologies. A variety of bespoke cross-section geometries with poly hedral features (namely, triangular, square, and five-side polygon) as well as semicircular cross-section are herein critically evaluated in terms of analytical performance against the standardcircular cross-section in a flat spirally-shape format. The idea behind is to maximize capture of elicited light by the new designs while leveraging 3D printing further for fabrication of (i) customized gaskets that enable reliable attaching of the active mixing zone of the CL cell to the detection window, (ii) in-line 3D-printed serpentine reactors, and (iii) flow confluences with tailorable shapes for enhancing mixing of samples with CL reagents. Up to twenty transparent functional cells were simultaneously fabricated without inner supports following post-curing and surface treat ment protocols lasting less than 5 h. In fact, previous attempts to print spirally-shaped cells in one-step by resorting to less cost effective photopolymer inkjet printing technologies were unsuccessful because of the requirement of lengthy procedures (>15 days) for quantitative removal of the support material. By exploiting the phthalazinedione-hydrogen peroxide chemistry as a model reaction, the five-side irregular pentagon cell exhibited superior analytical figures of merit in terms of LOD, dynamic range and intermediate precision as compared to alternative designs.Computational fluid dynamic simulations for mapping velocities at the entry region of the spiral cell corroborated the fact that the 5-side polygon cross-section flow-cell with Y-type confluence permitted the most efficient mixing of reagents and sample while enabling larger flow velocities near the inlet that contribute to a more efficient capture of the photons from the flash-type reaction. The applicability of the 3D-printed 5-side polygon CL cell for automatic determination of hydrogen peroxide using a computerized hybrid flow system was demonstrated for the analysis of high matrix samples, viz., seawater and saliva, with relative recoveries ranging from 83 to 103%.

Triamcinolone acetonide (TA) is a powerful anti-inflammatory drug used in the treatment of inflammatory ocular disorders; however, its poor aqueous solubility and ocular anatomical barriers hinder optimal treatment. The aim of this work was to obtain triamcinolone acetonide nanocrystals (TA-NC) to improve ocular corticosteroid therapy. Self-dispersible TA-NC were prepared by the bead milling technique followed by spray-drying, exhaustively characterized and then evaluated in vivo in an ocular model of endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU). Self-dispersible TA-NC presented an average particle size of 257 ± 30 nm, a narrow size distribution and a zeta potential of −25 ± 3 mV, which remained unchanged for 120 days under storage conditions at 25 ◦C. In addition, SEM studies of the TA-NC showed uniform and spherical morphology, and FTIR and XRDP analyses indicated no apparent chemical and crystallinity changes. The subconjunctival administration of TA-NC in albino male white rabbits showed no clinical signs of ocular damage. In vivo studies proved that treatment with self-dispersible TA-NC alleviated the inflammatory response in the anterior chamber and iris in EUI rabbit eyes. Dispersible TA-NC are a promising approach to obtaining a novel nanometric TA formulation for ocular disorders.

Biological control may benefit from the behavioral manipulation of natural enemies using volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Among these, herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) provide potential tools for attracting or retaining predators and parasitoids of insect pests. This work aimed to characterize the VOCs emitted by pear plants in response to attack by Cacopsylla bidens (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), a major pest in pear orchards, to compare these with VOCs induced by a leaf chewing insect, Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), and to evaluate the behavioral response of Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) to HIPVs from pear plants damaged by either herbivore. The results demonstrated that plants damaged by the pear psylla emitted VOC blends with increased amounts of aliphatic aldehydes. Leafroller damage resulted in increased amounts of benzeneacetonitrile, (E)-4,8-dimethylnona-1,3,7-triene, β-ocimene and caryophyllene. In olfactometer bioassays, larvae of C. externa were attracted to herbivore-damaged plants when contrasted with undamaged plants. When plant odors from psylla-damaged were contrasted with those of leafroller-damaged plants, C.externa preferred the former, also showing shorter response lag-times and higher response rates when psylla-damaged plants were present. Our results suggest that pear plants respond to herbivory by modifying their volatile profile, and that psylla-induced volatiles may be used as prey-specific chemical cues by chrysopid larvae. Our study is the first to report HIPVs in pear plants attacked by C. bidens, as well as the attraction of C. externa to psyllid-induced volatiles.

Although living standards in certain parts of the world have improved significantly in recent decades, these improvements have often been accompanied by environmental degradation that poses health risks to millions of people. Sustainable food choices play a critical role in addressing these environmental challenges. The current review summarizes how sustainable food choices are used as an impression management action aimed at projecting a desirable image of oneself to others. We show how three distinct factors — status striving, group cooperation, and the desire to attract a partner — influence the use of sustainable food as an impression management tactic. The review concludes by highlighting several future research directions based on recent research on related topics.

Recently inorganic perovskites have had a deep impact in perovskites-based devices allowing the fabrication of high efficiency and high stability devices. To continue with the development of these technologies a detailed study of the optoelectronic properties of these materials is necessary since this is a fundamental tool for the design of new and more efficient devices. In the present work, the optical properties of γ-CsPbI3 nanoparticles are studied using temperature dependent spectroscopic techniques of transmittance and photoluminescence. The absorption spectrum shows a marked excitonic behavior especially at low temperatures. Analyzing this spectrum with the Elliot function the evolution with temperature of the bandgap energy and the exciton binding energy is studied. From the evolution of the shape of the excitonic peak, both in the absorption and photoluminescence, we determined the excitonic recombination nature of photoluminescence and exciton-phonon interaction energy. Once proven the excitonic nature of photoluminescence we prove that the Stokes Shift has its origin in excitonic thermalization. Finally, analyzing the low energy region of the absorption spectrum the Urbach energy was determined. The obtained values, which are very low for solution processed nanoparticles, indicates that the nanoparticles present excellent crystallinity.

Searching for new copper compounds which may be useful as antitumor drugs, a series of new [Cu(L-dipeptide)(batho)] (batho:4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, L-dipeptide: Gly-Val, Gly Phe, Ala-Gly, Ala-Ala, Ala-Phe, Phe-Ala, Phe-Val and Phe-Phe) complexes were synthesized and characterized. To interpret the experimental IR spectra, [Cu(ala-gly)(batho)] was modelled in the gas phase using DFT at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level of theory and the calculated vibrational frequencies were analyzed. Solid-state characterization is in agreement with pentacoordinate complexes of the general formula [Cu(L-dipeptide)(batho)]·x solvent, similar to other [Cu(L-dipeptide)(diimine)] complexes. In solution, the major species are heteroleptic, as in the solid state. The mode of binding to the DNA was evaluated by different techniques, to understand the role of the diimine and the dipeptide. To this end, studies were also performed with complexes [CuCl2 (diimine)], [Cu(L dipeptide)(diimine)] and free diimines, with phenanthroline, neocuproine and 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl phenanthroline. The cytotoxicity of the complexes was determined on human cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231, MCF-7 (breast, the first triple negative), and A549 (lung epithelial) and non-tumor cell lines MRC-5 (lung) and MCF-10A (breast). [Cu(L-dipeptide)(batho)] complexes are highly cytotoxic as compared to cisplatin and [Cu(L-dipeptide)(phenanthroline)] complexes, being potential candidates to study their in vivo activity in the treatments of aggressive tumors for which there is no curative pharmacological treatment.

A summary of the resource.
Apiculate yeasts belonging to the genus Hanseniaspora are predominant on grapes and other fruits. While some species, such as Hanseniaspora uvarum, are well known for their abundant presence in fruits, they are generally characterized by their detrimental effect on fermentation quality because the excessive production of acetic acid. However, the species Hanseniaspora vineae is adapted to fermentation and currently is considered as an enhancer of positive flavour and sensory complexity in foods. Since 2002, we have been isolating strains from this species and conducting winemaking processes with them. In parallel, we also characterized this species from genes to metabolites. In 2013, we sequenced the genomes of two H. vineae strains, being these the first apiculate yeast genomes determined. In the last 10 years, it has become possible to understand its biology, discovering very peculiar features compared to the conventional Saccharomyces yeasts, such as a natural and unique G2 cell cycle arrest or the elucidation of the mandelate pathway for benzenoids synthesis. All these characteristics contribute to phenotypes with proved interest from the biotechnological point of view for winemaking and the production of other foods.

Glycerol dehydrogenase (GldA) from Escherichia coli BW25113, naturally catalyzes the oxidation of glycerol to dihydroxyacetone. It is known that GldA exhibits promiscuity towards short-chain C2-C4 alcohols. However, there are no reports regarding the substrate scope of GldA towards larger substrates. Herein we demonstrate that GldA can accept bulkier C6-C8 alcohols than previously anticipated. Overexpression of the gldA gene in the knockout background, E. coli BW25113 ΔgldA, was strikingly effective converting 2 mM of the compounds: cis dihydrocatetechol, cis-(1 S,2 R)− 3-methylcyclohexa-3,5-diene-1,2-diol and cis-(1 S,2 R)− 3-ethylcyclohexa-3,5- diene-1,2-diol, into 2.04 ± 0.21 mM of catechol, 0.62 ± 0.11 mM 3-methylcatechol, and 0.16 ± 0.02 mM 3-ethyl catechol, respectively. In-silico studies on the active site of GldA enlightened the decrease in product formation as the steric substrate demand increased. These results are of high interests for E. coli-based cell factories expressing Rieske non-heme iron dioxygenases, producing cis-dihydrocatechols, since such sough-after valuable products can be immediately degraded by GldA, substantially hampering the expected performance of the recombinant platform.

Although nowadays landspreading and incineration are the conventional disposal methods for the primary sludge (PS) and biosludge (BS) generated in the wastewater treatment plants of the pulp mill industry in Uruguay, their direct incineration for energy recovery is the most preferable one. Here, we propose the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) method as a pre treatment to improve the fuel characteristic of PS and BS. Proximate and ultimate analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis show that the HTC afects PS and BS diferently regarding carbon fxation, energy densifca tion and energy conversion efciency. Moreover, ash composition measured by X-ray fuorescence indicates that the HTC efectively diminishes the slagging and fouling indexes for both feedstocks, which can increase the life expectancy of boil ers. Alternative PS, BS, and their hydrochars were activated with H3PO4 to produce activated carbons, i.g. the BET specifc surface area was as high as 800 m2 /g for PS-AC, and exhibits CO2 adsorption capacity of 5 mmol/g at 10 bar at 273 K. These studies provide alternatives to direct incineration and landspreading of PS and BS in Uruguay to reduce their environmental impact, either by enhancing their fuel quality or by converting them into much more valuable products to face air pollution.
