<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The composition of the volatile fraction of 236 samples of genuine Uruguayan lemon oils obtained by industrial processing during the 1992 and 1993 seasons was studied by GC. The samples were representative of all production areas situated in the North and South of the country. Forty-three components were identified in the oils. The quantitative data regarding all the samples were divided according to the production areas (North and South), production year and month. These data show that except for a slight decrease of limonene and an increase of some other monoterpenes such as sabinene and β-pinene, the oil compositions do not show much variation during the production season, while the oils obtained from fruits growing in the South have a higher content of oxygenated compounds than those growing in the North. This difference is in good agreement with the better olfactive properties of the South oils. The quantitative composition of the Italian oils is more similar to Uruguayan South oils than to the North ones.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Dendrotoxins are a group of peptide toxins purified from the venom of several mamba snakes. - Dendrotoxin (-DTx, from the Eastern green mamba Dendroaspis angusticeps) is a well-known blocker of voltage-gated K+ channels and specifically of Kv1.1, Kv1.2 and Kv1.6. In this work we show that - DTx inhibited the ASIC currents in DRG neurons (IC50 = 0.8 M) when continuously perfused during 25 s (including a 5 s pulse to pH 6.1), but not when co-applied with the pH drop. Additionally, we show that -DTx abolished a transient component of the outward current that, in some experiments, appeared immediately after the end of the acid pulse. Our data indicate that -DTx inhibits ASICs in the high nM range while some Kv are inhibited in the low nM range. The -DTx selectivity and its potential interaction with ASICs should be taken in consideration when DTx is used in the high nM range.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Lutetium-177 is an emerging radionuclide due its convenient chemical and nuclear properties. In this paper we describe the development and evaluation in Uruguay of the targeted 177Lu labelled radiopharmaceuticals EDTMP (for bone pain palliation) and DOTA-TATE (neuroendocrine tumors). We optimized the preparation of these 177Lu radiopharmaceuticals including radiolabelling, quality control methods, in vitro and in vivo stability and their therapeutic application in patients. Radiation dosimetry aspects of 177Lu are also included. Nine male patients with prostate cancer and four female patients with breast carcinoma with multiple bone metastatic lesions were treated with 177Lu-EDTMP. Four patients with gastroentheropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NET) and one patient with bronchial NET were treated with 1- 3 cycles with a cumulative dose of 4.44-22.2 GBq of 177Lu-DOTA-TATE. Scintigraphic images of the patients treated with 177Lu-EDTMP evidenced high and rapid uptake in bone metastasis, remaining after 7 days post administration. Images allow skeletal visualization with high definition and demonstrate increased uptake in bone metastases. For 177Lu-DOTA-TATE, partial remissions were obtained in 4 patients and the remaining patient did not show significant progression 3 months after the second cycle. No serious adverse effects were registered, even in two patients with confirmed renal disease and high risk for renal disease Dosimetry assessments confirm the predictive value of the personalized therapy with radiolabelled peptides. We found it is possible to accumulate high therapeutic doses in tumours in sequential administrations of 177Lu-DOTA-TATE, increasing the probability of biological response without significant impairment ofthe renal function in patients with risk factors. These results demonstrate the attractive therapeutic properties of these two 177Lu labelled agents and the feasibility of this metabolic therapy in regions far away from 177Lu producing countries.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[tPhenolic compounds seriously affect the sensory and nutritional qualities of food products, both throughthe positive contribution of wood transfer in barrel-aged products and as off-flavours. A new targeted ana-lytical approach combining on-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) clean-up to reduce matrix interferenceand rapid chromatographic detection performed with ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatographycoupled with quadrupole/high-resolution mass spectrometry (Q-Orbitrap), was developed for the quan-tification of 56 simple phenols. Considering the advantages of using on-line SPE and a resolving powerof 140,000, the proposed method was applied to define phenolic content in red (N = 8) and white (8)wines, spirits (8), common (8) and balsamic (8) vinegars. The final method was linear from the limits ofquantification (0.0001–0.001 g mL−1) up to 10 g mL−1with R2of at least 0.99. Recovery, used to definemethod accuracy, ranged from 80 to 120% for 89% of compounds. The method was suitable for analyticalrequirements in the tested matrices being able to analyse 46 phenols in red wines, 41 phenols in whitewines and in spirits, 42 phenols in common vinegars and 44 phenols in balsamic vinegars.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Complement has been shown to lyse protoscoleces of Echinococcus granulosus, but products from this parasite are able to consume complement, and this has been proposed as an evasion mechanism. The murine secondary hydatidosis model, with intraperitoneal inoculation, is used in this work to assess the occurrence in vivo of complement consumption by the parasite as well as the role of complement during the establishment of infection. Although the measurement of systemic levels of C3 activation, total C3, and hemolytic complement in challenged mice yielded no evidence of complement consumption, the relevance of local consumption at the site of infection cannot be ruled out. The role of complement during establishment of infection was assessed by comparing parasite burdens in normal and complement-depleted mice. Complement depletion by treatment with cobra venom factor caused a 79% reduction in cyst numbers (P < 0.05). Possible explanations of this unexpected result are discussed. The results presented suggest that lysis or opsonization by host complement are not effective against the establishing parasite in this model. They also indicate the significance of complement activation by the parasite needs to be studied at a local level.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Crystal structure parameters were accurately determined using 10 000 eV photons, and the Pr occupancy was refined using data collected with 5962 eV photons, close to the Pr LI I I absorption edge. BaCe1ı xPrxO3ı ı crystallizes in the Pnma (No. 62) space group for all x values. Pr cations are mainly located at the Ce sites (perovskitesB site), but a small fraction of them increasingly substitute some of the Ba ionsat the A site asPr content increases. The Pr doping introduces electronic defects (Pr+3/Pr+4) and oxygen vacancies needed for H2O incorporation and H-ionic conductivity. A decrease in the orthorhombic distortion would produce the opposite effects on the electronic and ionic mobility. The electronic mobility should increase due to an improvement in the overlap of the (Ce/Pr)4f–O2p orbital, while the proton mobility should decrease as a consequence of a larger hopping distance]]></dcterms:abstract>

The results have been compared with the hypervalent CO3 and SO3 molecules. It was found that the three molecules present two stable structures with symmetry C2v and D3h respectively. While most of the methods predict the former to be the most stable structure for CO3 — although CASPT2 and Davidson's correct MR-SDCI gave the opposite result — all methods predict the D3h structure as the global minimum for O4 and SO3. At the theoretical level employed here O4 is stable towards decomposition into O3(1A1) and O(3P) by more than 40 kcal mol−1, for which reason it is suggested that it should be observable among the products of the reaction of oxygen atoms with ozone molecules.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Humans are exposed to arsenic (As) in the environment, in both organic and inorganic forms, and it has been widely demonstrated that the inorganic arsenic species (arsenate and arsenite) are the main toxic ones being drinking water one of the main sources of exposure worldwide. Urinary arsenic level is the recommended biomarker for assessing human exposure risks. Absorbed inorganic arsenic is metabolized to mono- and dimethylated arsenic compounds (MMA and DMA) prior to its excretion in urine. In this work, a simple procedure for the determination of toxicologically relevant arsenic species in urine (sum of As(III), As(V), MMA and DMA) using Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (HG-AAS) was developed in order to obtain a feasible and self-sustainable technology for analysis and epidemiological studies when other expensive techniques are not available. Sample preparation was based on the derivation of arsenic species with L-cysteine. The limit of detection was 1.5 μg L-1, linearity up to 50 μg L-1 and analytical precision was 12 % (relative standard deviation, RSD %, n=10). Trueness was evaluated using spiked urine samples as well as a reference material. The range of acceptation for recoveries was established in 85-115% by means of a t-test at the 95% significance level. Recoveries for the four As species from spiked urine samples were in the range 87.8-113.5 %. The recovery from a reference material was 100.7%. The comparison between the HG-AAS and high performance liquid chromatography-hydride generation-coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-HG-ICPMS), considered as a gold standard technique, showed good agreement (R2 = 0.94) for forty urine samples. The figures of merit were adequate for the determination of relevant species of As for biomonitoring purposes according to international regulations and it can be postulated as an alternative to more expensive techniques]]></dcterms:abstract>

These results were correlated with the in vitro tests required by regulatory organisms, and the actual behavior in field. Basal superoxide content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity (20-80 U mg-1 protein) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity (4.6-7.0 mg antioxidant per g dry seed) permitted to study the oxidative stress of seeds. Essential metal levels were in accordance to previous reports, with the exception of Zn that was higher in some batches of good in vitro quality, but poor performance in field. Proteomic profile showed no differences between batches. Two of the studied parameters (basal superoxide content and Zn level) contribute to a better assessment of the health state of the seeds and predict a possible poor performance in field.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Vanadium is a transition metal that, being ubiquitously distributed in soil, crude oil, water and air, also found roles in biological systems and is an essential element in most living beings. There are also several groups of organisms which accumulate vanadium, employing it in their biological processes. Vanadium being a biological relevant element, it is not surprising that many vanadium based therapeutic drugs have been proposed for the treatment of several types of diseases. Namely, vanadium compounds, in particular organic derivatives, have been proposed for the treatment of diabetes, of cancer and of diseases caused by parasites. In this work we review the medicinal applications proposed for vanadium compounds with particular emphasis on the more recent publications. In cells, partly due to the similarity of vanadate and phosphate, vanadium compounds activate numerous signaling pathways and transcription factors; this by itself potentiates application of vanadium-based therapeutics. Nevertheless, this non-specific bio-activity may also introduce several deleterious side effects as in addition, due to Fenton’s type reactions or of the reaction with atmospheric O2, VCs may also generate reactive oxygen species, thereby introducing oxidative stress with consequences presently not well evaluated, particularly for long-term]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Bacterial canker caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subspecies michiganensis (Cmm) has been a threat to tomato production in Uruguay for several years. In this study, 39 Cmm strains were collected from several outbreaks and production areas in Uruguay, and were identified by molecular assays and pathogenicity tests on a susceptible cultivar of tomato. In addition, a TaqMan assay targeting a putative two-component system sensor kinase gene demonstrated good specificity with all strains tested and gave no false negative results. The first epidemiological study of Cmm in this country was carried out in order to elucidate the origin of outbreaks and sources of infection and dissemination of the pathogen. Strains from Uruguay showed high genetic diversity based on a Multi Locus Sequence Typing analysis of five housekeeping genes. This approach revealed 36 sequence types (STs) within a worldwide collection of 108 Cmm strains. Ten STs correspond to strains solely isolated in Uruguay, including eight novel STs for the subspecies michiganensis. This high diversity reflects the introduction of new strains from different origins that most probably results from seed importation. This study provides relevant information about the distribution and origin of strains causing bacterial canker in Uruguay and will pave the way for the establishment of preventive measures to control the disease.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[GLUT’s (facilitative glucose transporters) over-expression in tumor cells has allowed the detection of several cancer types, using a glucose analogue (18F-FDG) with PET images, worldwide. New glucose analogs radiolabeled with 99mTc could be a less-expensive and more accessible alternative for diagnosis using SPECT imaging. D-Glucose (99mTc-IDAG) and 2-D-deoxyglucose (99mTc-AADG) organometallic complexes were proposed and studied as potential 18F-FDG surrogates. The glucose complexes were prepared and evaluated as potential cancer imaging agents, in a melanoma tumor model. Iminodiacetic acid (IDA) and aminoacetate (AA) moieties were chosen as chelating system for radiolabeling with 99mTc. Tumor uptake of the formed complexes was evaluated in B16 murine cell line in vitro and in vivo in melanoma bearing C57BL/6 mice. In vitro and in vivo studies were conducted with 18F-FDG in order to compare the uptake of 99mTc-glucose complexes in the tumor model. IDAG and AADG compounds were synthesized and radiolabeled with 99mTcO4 to obtain the 99mTc-IDAG and 99mTc-AADG complexes in high yield and stability. In vitro cell studies showed maximum uptake at 60 min for complexes, 99mTc-IDAG and 99mTc-AADG, with 6% and 2%, respectively. Biodistribution studies showed high tumor uptake one hour post-injection, reaching tumor-to-muscle ratios of 12.1 ± 3.73 and 2.88 ± 1.40 for 99mTc-IDAG and 99mTc-AADG, respectively. SPECT and micro-SPECT-CT images acquired after the injection of 99mTc-IDAG showed accumulation in tumor sites, suggesting that this glucose complex would be a promising candidate for cancer imaging]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A combination of two first-principles electronic structure calculation methods in the framework of density-functional theory was applied to investigate the (001) a-Al2O3 surface reconstruction and its structural, electronic, magnetic, and hyperfine properties when doped with Cd impurities at different depths from the surface. The SIESTA approach was used to obtain the equilibrium positions of all atoms and the Full-Potential Augmented Plane Wave plus local orbital (FP-APW+lo) method was employed in order to obtain the electronic structure at these equilibrium positions and all the other physical properties. For the most stable (001) a-Al2O3 surface, we have demonstrated that the inclusion of the Cd atom at substitutional Al sites at and near the surface produces a ground state magnetic behavior. The largest principal component V33 of the electric-field-gradient (EFG) tensor at the Cd atom localized just above the a-Al2O3 terrace showed the same [001] orientation and a dominating p-character as Cd does when it is localized at bulk a-Al2O3, but exhibits an anomalous V33 magnitude four times larger than its value in bulk. Just below the surface, the non symmetric structural relaxation around the Cd impurity is responsible for the strong change in the asymmetry, magnitude, and orientation of the EFG tensor. The changes in the hyperfine properties have been correlated with the modifications observed on the electronic charge density at the different Cd sites and on the p-states of the Cd-projected partial density of states. Accordingly, the significant differences on the hyperfine parameters showed for different depths suggest that 111Cd probe-atoms used in Perturbed c–c Angular Correlation experiments could be used for evaluating geometrical and electronic distortions, particularly for positions quite close to the reconstructed surface, as well as contributing to studies of growth, adsorption, and diffusion of atoms in oxide surfaces and interfaces.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Iron pillared clay (Fe-PILC) was prepared from a montmorillonite and was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray fluorescence. Fe-PILC catalytic activity was evaluated in photo-Fenton processes applied to the degradation of 2-clorophenol. Different catalyst loads were assayed. The Fe-PILC allowed almost complete degradation of the contaminant. An increase in the contaminant degradation rate was observed, following leaching of iron during catalytic assays, which suggest the existence of a homogeneous photo-Fenton mechanism. The catalytic performance of the Fe-PILC was compared with that for goethite and zero valent iron nanoparticles. Differences were found regarding the achieved degradation levels, the efficiency in oxidant consumption, and the extension of iron leaching.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Polarized projective mapping (PPM) combines the main features of projective mapping and polarized sensory positioning. The main advantage of this methodology is that it allows comparing results obtained in different sessions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of PPM, focusing on individual and global repeatability, global reproducibility and data aggregation from different sessions. A consumer study with two sample sets of powdered drinks was carried out. Consumers were randomly divided into four groups: two of the groups evaluated the same sample set in two different sessions, while the other two evaluated the samples in three sessions (in one of the sessions, they evaluated the whole sample set, whereas in the other two sessions they evaluated the sample set split into two sets). Results showed that PPM can be regarded as a repeatable and reproducible methodology. Preliminary evidence of the validity of aggregating data from different sessions was gathered.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Brains were blended in a Waring blender with 20% dextran solution and the homogenate was centrifuged at 4,000 g for 10 min. Cysts present in the sediment were digested by adding an equal amount of a solution containing 1 g NaCl, 1.4 ml HCl, and 1 mg pepsin (1:60,000 assay activity) per 100 ml water, and incubated at 37 C for 1 min. This method is harmless for bradyzoites, as tested by bioassays in mice. <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Herein, we investigated the inversion of corannulene, sumanene, and dibenzo[a,g]corannulene when they are adsorbed onto graphene or intercalated in bilayer graphene. The results obtained with the M06-L, M06-2X, TPPS-D3, TPSS-D3BJ, B3LYP-D3, and B3LYP-D3BJ methods supported a significant reduction of the inversion barriers. In the case of corannulene adsorbed onto graphene, nonbonded interactions reduce the inversion barrier by at least a 50% with respect to the gas phase, whereas for adsorbed sumanene and dibenzo[a,g]corannulene the reductions are at least 39 and 67%, respectively. When the molecules are intercalated in bilayer graphene the lowering of the activation energy is more significant. In the particular case of dibenzo[a,g]corannulene the molecule is expected to display an almost planar structure, with its 0.83 Å bowl depth almost completely quenched. For intercalated corannulene and sumanene, the inversion barriers are at least 66 and 60% lower, respectively. It is our hope that these results can help to improve the design of receptors that can catalyze the inversion of buckybowls.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[By means of first principle calculations, we investigated the effects of the adsorption of the strong n-type dopant 4-(1,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)phenyl)dimethylamine (N-DMBI) onto graphene. The adsorption of radical N-DMBI (R-N-DMBI) occurs with large adsorption energy (Eads) of 44.4 kcal/mol and induces a metallic character on graphene by shifting the Dirac point 0.6 eV below the Fermi level. The charge received by graphene can be almost completely removed and thus the metallic character may be inhibited if 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetra-cyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ) is simultaneously adsorbed on any side of graphene. In effect, by doing so, the semimetallic character is recovered or a tiny gap is opened. When F4-TCNQ and radical N-DMBI are adsorbed on the same side, the molecules are strongly held together thanks to the hydrogen bond formed between the fluorine atoms of F4-TCNQ and the H of R-N-DMBI. In this case, the Eads is over 120 kcal/mol, per F4-TCNQ/R-N-DMBI pair. When the latter two molecules are adsorbed on opposite sides, the Eads is 87.6 kcal/mol. This value is more than 30 kcal/mol smaller than that computed when they are adsorbed on the same side, even though it is nearly 10 kcal/mol larger than the sum of the Eads of isolated F4-TCNQ and R-N-DMBI. In this case, graphene behaves as a medium that transfers electrons from R-N-DMBI to F4-TCNQ, without having the molecules in direct contact. We see a strong synergic interaction that increases the Eads when an electron donating molecule is combined with an electron withdrawing one. R-N-DMBI has a profound influence on the reactivity of graphene. Bond energies between the graphene surface and H, F, and OH radicals increased when R-N-DMBI is adsorbed, but the addition of these radicals destroys the metallic character of the graphene-R-N-DMBI complex and band gaps in the range of 0.2–0.4 eV are opened. These results show that the radical N-DMBI alters the chemistry and electronic properties of graphene to an extent, which rivals the most popular molecules and substrates used in the noncovalent chemistry of graphene.]]></dcterms:abstract>
