<dcterms:abstract>This paper deals with the role of dispersed lanthana as an active phase in several catalytic reactions: CO hydrogenation, CO oxidation, and oxidative dimerization of methane. Characterization of the prepared catalysts indicates that lanthana can be effectively dispersed on silica and on ceria. While in the case of silica-supported catalysts lanthana appears at the surface, leading to an almost full coverage for loadings higher than 40%, in the case of ceria-based systems, lanthana forms a solid solution with the support. In all the reactions studied, the presence of lanthana can be related to significant changes in the catalytic properties of the bare supports. Thus, the selectivity towards the total oxidation products observed on pure ceria is decreased, and the low activity shown by silica is enhanced. For the CO + H{sub 2} reaction, the addition of lanthana also generates upgraded products. (orig.).</dcterms:abstract>

Hartree-Fock,MP2 and CCSD(T) methods were used both for the geometry optimization and spectra calculations at the molecular orbital level. The B3LYP, PBE0, and M06 exchange-correlation potentials were employed to calculate the same properties at the DFT level. Both Pople basis sets, 6-31þG(d) and 6-311þþG(3df,2pd), and Dunning basis sets, aug-cc-pVTZ and aug-cc-pVQZ, were used. SH and CS frequency shifts upon water complexation were studied, and a discussion is performed on the expected relation between the CH and CS Raman activities, in view of their usefulness for studies in protein chemistry. Scaling factors for the vibrational frequencies were obtained for all the combination of methods and basis sets, and shown to be completely similar to the ones present in the literature when available. Scaling factors for the M06 method are presented for the first time with these basis sets.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Flavin cofactors, like flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), are important electron shuttles in living systems. They catalyze a wide range of one- or two-electron redox reactions. Experimental investigations include UV-vis as well as infrared spectroscopy. FAD in aqueous solution exhibits a significantly shorter excited state lifetime than its analog, the flavin mononucleotide. This finding is explained by the presence of a "stacked" FAD conformation, in which isoalloxazine and adenine moieties form a π-complex. Stacking of the isoalloxazine and adenine rings should have an influence on the frequency of the vibrational modes. Density functional theory (DFT) studies of the closed form of FAD in microsolvation (explicit water) were used to reproduce the experimental infrared spectra, substantiating the prevalence of the stacked geometry of FAD in aqueous surroundings. It could be shown that the existence of the closed structure in FAD can be narrowed down to the presence of only a single water molecule between the third hydroxyl group (of the ribityl chain) and the N7 in the adenine ring of FAD.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The aim of this study was to concentrate whey protein by ultrafiltration process, evaluating the pressure at 1–3 bar and temperature of 10–20℃. In the conditions that show the more protein concentration were evaluated the interfacial and emulsifying properties at pH 5.7 and 7.0. The whey concentrate at 10℃ and 1.5 bar showed the higher protein value 36% (w/w), with soluble protein of 33.82% (solubility of 93.94%) for pH 5.7 and 34% (solubility of 94.4%) for pH 7.0, respectively. The whey concentrate powder present particle size distribution between 0.4-110 um. The whey at pH 5.7 and 7.0 was not observed significant differences in the resistance parameters of the oil/water layer interface. The interfacial film formed by the proteins presented an essentially elastic behavior in both pH, and in pH 5.7 the emulsion was more stable with lower diameter droplets. The concentrate whey showed techno-functional properties (emulsification and solubility), which allow the use as ingredients in products of industrial interest in food products such as mayonnaise, ice cream, sauces, and others.

<dcterms:abstract>Soybean residue, known as okara, is a byproduct of soymilk production with varying compositions based on the production process. This study explored the characteristics of fresh and dried, disc-milled, and all-metal hammer-milled okara derived from soy crops in Uruguay through different techniques, including physicochemical, microbiological, and sensory analyses. Specifically, dried disc-milled okara was used in making breaded tofu steak, and the sensory traits and oil absorption of the fried product were examined when bread crumbs were substituted with okara in proportions of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%. The production process affected moisture, protein, fiber, and oxidative rancidity. Dried samples showed differences in smell, crispness, and particle size, while the drying process reduced microbial load and total polyphenols but enhanced lightness, redness, and yellowness. All samples exhibited a similar fatty acid profile, mainly C18:2. Increasing okara content in breading enhanced the color and smell of fried steaks. Interestingly, there was no significant difference in fat content between the 0 and 100% okara substitutions. This study concludes that dried okara, rich in fiber, protein, and essential fatty acids, presents potential as a functional food for human consumption. It also serves as a sustainable and nutritious breading substitute, offering an alternative to conventional ingredients.</dcterms:abstract>

The method is based on the nitration of paracetamol with sodium nitrite, and the absorption of the reaction product is measured at 430 nm in alkaline medium. Unlike other colorimetric methods used for determination of paracetamol, this method does not require the use of heat. The influence of several operating parameters is studied. The method was applied to the determination of paracetamol in oral solutions and in tablets, alone or associated with caffeine. When the results were compared with those obtained by the official HPLC method (USP 24) the relative differences found were from 0.4 to 2.3%, with relative standard deviations below 1%.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The molybdenum blue method using antimony and ascorbic acid was studied for the determination of phosphorus (as orthophosphate) by means of sequential injection analysis (SIA). In order to avoid the interference of the Schlieren effect in the photometric measurements a stopped-flow kinetic approach was adopted monitoring the absorbance of the reaction bolus inside the flow cell. Aiming at enhancing the sensitivity of the method, the effect of the order of addition of the reactants was studied. It was found that the best sensitivity was attained by adding separate reagents and acidifying only after the phosphate, molybdate and antimony solutions were already mixed; the reductant (ascorbic acid) was then added. In this way a sensitivity enhancement in excess of 10 times was obtained when compared to the addition of the phosphate solution to the acidified mixture of molybdate and antimony. It is proposed that the difference in sensitivities could be explained by the existence of different mechanisms for the formation of the intermediate phosphoantimonyl molybdic acid (PMA). Thus the selected sequence in the order of addition, where sulphuric acid is added to the mixture of the other reactants would lead to higher production of PMA in turn conducting to a faster reduction reaction. The resulting SIA method was validated finding limits of detection (3s/m) and quantification (10s/m) of 0.0077 and 0.026 mg-P L−1 respectively. Linearity was confirmed in the range up to 2 mg-P L−1. Precisions (sr, n = 10) were in the range 1.8%–4.0%. 32 water samples of different types and origins were analysed by the proposed method and by ion chromatography, obtaining a regression curve y = 0.990× - 0.0019, with a determination coefficient R2 = 0.973.</dcterms:abstract>

The analyzer is based on a pulsed flow analysis system employing solenoid micropumps and uses photometric detection based on LEDs and photodiodes. The analytes it determines are orthophosphate, nitrite and nitrate. The analyzer was programmed to perform a complete analysis cycle every 6 h. The end user receives the information from the analyzer via text messages (SMS), a service available even in rural and less developed areas, and requiring simple (non-smart) cell phones. The linear range was up to 25 mg L-1P for phosphate, up to 1600 μg L-1N-NO2for nitrite, and up to 2500 μg L-1N-NO3for nitrite plus nitrate. This study investigated associations between low-level Mn exposure and developmental scores in children aged 14–45 months. Children’s hair samples (n = 60) were analyzed for Mn and lead (Pb) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Children were assessed with the Bayley Scales of Infant Development III (BSID). Mean hair Mn and Pb concentrations were 0.98 ± 0.74 and 10.1 ± 10.5 μg/g, respectively. Unadjusted inverse associations were seen between Mn and BSID subscales, with girls having lower scores related to Mn than boys. No significant associations remained in covariate-adjusted models, although when stratified by sex boys had a positive association between hair Mn levels and language scores. This study does not show clear evidence of an association between hair Mn concentrations and children’s developmental scores in a region of low-level Mn exposure.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Biological and psychosocial factors affect child development and behavior. Whereas biological underpinnings behind the neurotoxic effects of lead are studied extensively, the effects of psychosocial factors contributing to poor behavioral outcomes in lead-exposed children are not well understood. Parental attributes and practices may moderate or mediate the effects of lead on children’s behavioral outcomes. We investigated the hypothesis that maternal and child lead and hemoglobin levels are associated with maternal perceptions of their parenting. Specifically, we hypothesized that children with higher blood lead (BLL) and lower hemoglobin concentrations would be associated with poorer maternal self-assessments of their parenting skills or the mother–child relationship. Children aged 13–55 months and their mothers (n = 109) were recruited from among the participants of a previous lead and anemia screening study and from preschools in Montevideo, Uruguay. The mother–child pair attended two study visits: one to collect biological samples and answer demographic and child questionnaires, including statements regarding parenting; and a second to evaluate maternal IQ, depression and stress, and child development. Of the children, 51.6% had blood lead concentrations (BLLs) 5 mg/dL, 18.0% had anemia, and 8% had both conditions. Among mothers, 48.4% had BLLs 5 mg/dL, 16.0% had anemia, and 11% had both. BLLs 5 mg/dL in mother or child were associated with lower maternal perceptions of being skilled at discipline (p < 0.05). Maternal anemia was associated with lower likelihood that mothers would let their children explore and play (p < 0.05), whereas child anemia was associated with maternal perception of lower emotional support (p < 0.01). In addition to shared environmental exposures, parenting and family interactions need to be considered as potentially contributing factors to poorer outcomes in lead-exposed children.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Children´s exposure to inorganic arsenic (iAs) is a concern because of its effects on growth and development, and its carcinogenic properties. Low level As exposure is prevalent but its sources are understudied. We investigated the contribution of diet to iAs exposure and arsenic methylation in 1st-graders (6-8 y, 57.3% boys) from Montevideo. First-morning urine samples were analyzed for iAs metabolites (MMA, DMA and remaining iAs) by high-pressure liquid chromatography with hydride generation and inductively coupled mass spectrometry. Caregivers provided two 24-hr recalls of children’s diets. Principal component analysis identified 6 dietary patterns, explaining 41% of variability in food intake: 1) high intake of red meat, yogurt and sweetened beverages, 2) breads, processed meats and fats, 3) dark green leafy vegetables and white meat, 4) vegetables and eggs, 5) sweets, chips and fried foods, and 6) fruit. Consumption of rice, corn, and grain-based foods was also analyzed. Sp. gravity adjusted urinary arsenic metabolite concentrations (U-As) and metabolite fractions (%MMA, %DMA and %iAs) were modeled as dependent variables with dietary components as predictors, adjusted for sex and BMI- for-age Z score. Models with metabolite fractions were adjusted for U-As. 192 children had urine samples, 188 had diet recall. U-As was fairly low (median, range: 9.93, 2.8-48.1 µg/L). Children scoring high on the fruit pattern had higher U-As (ß±SE: 1.0±04 p<0.05). Children consuming more rice and grains also had higher U-As (0.1±0.03 and 0.02±0.01, respectively, p<0.01). Interestingly, children scoring high on the red meat, yogurt and sweetened beverages, and dark green vegetables and white meats pattern had higher %DMA (0.5±0.3, and 0.9±0.3, respectively, p<0.01) and lower %iAs (-0.4±0.2 and -0.5±0.2, respectively, p<0.1). Children’s food patterns and consumption of specific foods may contribute to inorganic As exposure and affect their ability to methylate arsenic.
<dcterms:abstract>Arsenic exposure in children is a public health concern but is understudied in relation to the predictors, and effects of low-level exposure. We examined the extent and dietary predictors of exposure to inorganic arsenic in 5–8 year old children from Montevideo, Uruguay. Children were recruited at school; 357 were enrolled, 328 collected morning urine samples, and 317 had two 24-h dietary recalls. Urinary arsenic metabolites, i.e. inorganic arsenic (iAs), methylarsonic acid (MMA), and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography with hydride generation and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-HG-ICP-MS), and the sum concentration (U-As) used for exposure assessment. Proportions of arsenic metabolites (%iAs, %MMA and %DMA) in urine were modelled in OLS regressions as functions of food groups, dietary patterns, nutrient intake, and nutritional status. Exposure to arsenic was low (median U-As: 9.9 mg/L) and household water (water As: median 0.45 mg/L) was not a major contributor to exposure. Children with higher consumption of rice had higher U-As but lower %iAs, %MMA, and higher %DMA. Children with higher meat consumption had lower %iAs and higher %DMA. Higher scores on “nutrient dense” dietary pattern were related to lower %iAs and % MMA, and higher %DMA. Higher intake of dietary folate was associated with lower %MMA and higher % DMA. Overweight children had lower %MMA and higher %DMA than normal-weight children. In summary, rice was an important predictor of exposure to inorganic arsenic and DMA. Higher meat and folate consumption, diet rich in green leafy and red-orange vegetables and eggs, and higher BMI contributed to higher arsenic methylation capacity</dcterms:abstract>

Of the 211 children aged 6-8 years living in Montevideo who were eligible for the study because they had at least one OS marker measured via ELISA, 143 were included in a complete-case analysis. Urinary metals were measured with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS: Pb, Cd) and high-performance liquid chromatography online with hydride generation ICP-MS (As-metabolites); concentrations were log2-transformed. All urinary markers were adjusted for specific gravity of urine. Two 24-h dietary recalls were conducted to estimate children's dietary intakes, including total fruit and vegetable consumption and vitamin C, zinc and fiber intake. Ordinary least square (OLS) and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regressions were used to estimate the association between metals and each OS marker as outcome. Metal exposure was generally low: median urinary As, Cd, Pb 9.6 μg/L, 0.06 μg/L and 1.9 μg/L, respectively. Median 8-isoprostane concentration was 1.1 and 8-OHdG 39.6 ng/mL. Log2-transformed urinary As concentrations were positively associated with 8-OHdG concentrations (10.90 [3.82, 17.97]) in covariate-adjusted OLS models which also took account of exposure to Cd and Pb. In WQS, a mixture index was also associated with higher 8-OHdG (8.71 [1.12, 16.3] for each 25% increase in index value), mostly driven by As exposure. There was little evidence of effect modification by dietary antioxidants. In sum, even at low-level, As exposure is associated with detectable oxidative damage to the DNA.</dcterms:abstract>

Among the flavor compounds, the major volatile flavour compounds from different chemical classes namely monoterpene hydrocarbons (i.e. limonene, sabinene plus β-pinene, γ-terpinene, myrcene, α-pinene and α-terpinolene), esters (i.e. neryl acetate and geranyl acetate), alcohol (i.e. α-Terpineol) and aldehyde compounds (i.e. geranial and neral) were composed of > 90% of total volatile flavor compounds of target cold pressed lemon oils. Uruguayan essential oil had the least concentration level of all major classes of flavor compounds except for alcohol compounds; while the highest content of all chemical classes of flavor compounds identified in this study. The principle component analysis (PCA) allowed us to discriminate various cold pressed lemon oil based on their origin resource thereby classify their sensorial attributes.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is an international disarmament treaty that prohibits the development, stockpiling and use of chemical weapons. This treaty has 193 States Parties (nations for which the treaty is binding) and entered into force in 1997. The CWC contains schedules of chemicals that have been associated with chemical warfare programmes. These scheduled chemicals must be declared by the States that possess them and are subject to verification by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW, the implementing body of the CWC). Isotopically labelled and stereoisomeric variants of the scheduled chemicals have presented ambiguities for interpretation of the requirements of treaty implementation, and advice was sought from the OPCW’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) in 2016. The SAB provided advice useful to resolving these ambiguities, and the technical information compiled and reviewed by the SAB is described herein. The advice provided should benefit scientists and diplomats from the CWC’s State Parties to help ensure a consistent approach to their declarations of scheduled chemicals. In this report, isotopically labelled and stereoisomeric variants of CWC-scheduled chemicals are reviewed, and the impact of the SAB advice in influencing a change to national licensing in one of the State Parties is discussed. This outcome, an update to national licensing governing compliance to an international treaty, serves as an example of the effectiveness of science diplomacy within an international disarmament treaty.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Advances across the chemical and biological (life) sciences are increasingly enabled by ideas and tools from sectors outside these disciplines, with information and communication technologies playing a key role across 21 st century scientific development. In the face of rapid technological change, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the implementing body of the Chemical Weapons Convention (“the Convention”), seeks technological opportunities to strengthen capabilities in the field of chemical disarmament. The OPCW Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) in its review of developments in science and technology examined the potential uses of emerging technologies for the implementation of the Convention at a workshop entitled “Innovative Technologies for Chemical Security”, held from 3 to 5 July 2017, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event, organized in cooperation with the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine of the United States of America, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, and the Brazilian Chemical Society, was attended by 45 scientists and engineers from 22 countries. Their insights into the use of innovative technological tools and how they might benefit chemical disarmament and non-proliferation informed the SAB’s report on developments in science and technology for the Fourth Review Conference of the Convention (to be held in November 2018), and are described herein, as are recommendations that the SAB submitted to the OPCW Director-General and the States Parties of the Convention. It is concluded that technologies exist or are under development that could be used for investigations, contingency, assistance and protection, reducing risks to inspectors, and enhancing sampling and analysis.</dcterms:abstract>
