    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Colloidalaggregation processes arising at different electrolyte concentrations were studied by means of experiments and confronted with theoretical predictions of different kinetic aggregationmodels. For this purpose, aqueous dispersions of relatively large polystyrene microspheres were chosen as experimental systems.Aggregation was induced by adding KBr electrolyte to the initially stable particle dispersions. During the aggregation processes, the cluster-size distribution was monitored by means of single cluster light scattering. Analyzing the time evolution of the monomer concentration, we found that the processes arising even at moderate electrolyte concentrations cannot be described by pure time-independent irreversible aggregationmodels. Hence, alternative models such as time-dependent irreversible aggregation and several reversible aggregationmodels were also tested. The model that considers a time-dependent sticking probability was found to fit the data quite satisfactorily. Nevertheless, the fitted was so slow that it seems not very likely to find such a behavior in real systems. The aggregation-fragmentation models reported in the literature were unable to reproduce the experimental observations. Hence, a more realistic reversible aggregationmodel was developed. This model accounts also for reenforced or double bonds between the constituent particles. The corresponding fit improved significantly and reached the same quality as the time-dependent model. Moreover, the obtained fitting parameters were in qualitative agreement with the DLVO predictions and so, reversible aggregation seems to be a more reasonable explanation for the experimental data than time-dependent irreversible aggregation. However, no definite statement on the possible secondary bond fragmentation mechanism may be made since both the applied shear stress in the measuring cell and thermal fluctuations can cause weaker bonds to break.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In the last decade, consumer panels have been claimed capable of evaluating the intensity of sensory attributes of food products using intensity scales, providing similar results than trained assessors. In this context, the present study deals with the evaluation of the performance of a consumer panel for texture evaluation of milk desserts, based on global and individual performance, and the comparison with a panel of trained assessor panel. Four milk dessertswith different texture characteristics were evaluated by 86 consumers and by a trained panel. Both panels evaluated five texture attributes using unstructured intensity scales. Consumers and trained assessors showed very similar discriminative capacity and reproducibility for all the evaluated texture characteristics.However, the consumer panel showed lack of consensus in its evaluations and individual scores for most consumers were not able to significantly discriminate between samples.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>In May 2020, Uruguay was one of the few Latin American countries that had managed to control the outbreak of<br />COVID-19 without mandatory curfews or quarantines. However, several social distancing measures created a major disruption in different aspects of the daily life of Uruguayan citizens. In this context, the objectives of the present work were i) to identify changes in eating habits perceived by Uruguayan citizens as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, and ii) to explore factors associated with different perceived changes on eating habits. A cross-sectional online study was conducted with 891 participants, recruited using an advertisement on Facebook<br />and Instagram. Fifty-one percent of the participants indicated that their eating habits had changed since the detection of the first cases of COVID-19 in Uruguay. Large heterogeneity in the categorization of the changes existed: 45% of the participants regarded the changes as positive, 32% as negative and 23% as neither positive nor negative. A multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to study the influence of explanatory variables in the likelihood of belonging to groups who reported different changes in eating habits (no changes, positive,<br />negative, or neither positive nor negative changes). Household income and reliance on instrumental and emotional support increased the likelihood of reporting positive changes in eating habits, whereas negative changes were associated with a reduction in household income due to COVID-19 and the coping strategies selfdistraction and self-blaming. Insights for policy making to reinforce positive effects and minimize threats to<br />healthy eating are discussed.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Herein, we investigate sulfur substitutional defects in singlewalled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and graphene by using firstprinciples calculations. The estimated formation energies for the (3,3), (5,5), and (10,0) SWCNTs and graphene lie between 0.9 and 3.8 eV, at sulfur concentrations of 1.7&ndash;4 atom%. Thus, from a thermodynamic standpoint, sulfur doping is not difficult. Indeed, these values can be compared with that of 0.7 eV obtained for a nitrogen-doped (5,5) SWCNT. We suggest that it may be possible to introduce sulfur into the SWCNT framework by employing sulfur-containing heterocycles. Our simulations indicate that sulfur doping can modify the electronic structure of the SWCNTs and graphene, depending on the sulfur content. In the case of graphene, sulfur doping can induce different effects: the doped sheet can be a small-band-gap semiconductor, or it can have better metallic properties than the pristine sheet. Thus, S-doped graphene may be a smart choice for constructing nanoelectronic devices, since it is possible to modulate the electronic properties of the sheet by adjusting the amount of sulfur introduced. Different synthetic routes to produce sulfur-doped graphene are discussed]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The aim of the present study was to evaluate the suitability of saliva as a biological fluid in relative bioavailability (RBA) studies, with the focus on the statistical design and data variability. A randomized, openlabel, four periods and two sequences (4 9 2) crossover RBA study in saliva of two phenytoin (PHT) 100 mg immediate-release capsules was performed. PHT is a narrow therapeutic index drug that has been widely used for epilepsy treatment for many years. Published information regarding its bioavailability is available, but plasma assessed. This study was designed and performed using saliva as the biological fluid and the simplest conditions that produce coherent results with previously published plasma studies. Pharmacokinetic parameters (Cmax, Tmax, AUC0-t, AUC0-inf, Cmax/AUC0-t, Ke, and t1/2) for each volunteer at each period were calculated. Four different BE calculations were performed: individual bioequivalence, by the method of moments, and three average bioequivalence with data averaged over the two administrations and with data of periods 1&ndash;2 and 3&ndash;4. ANOVA calculation showed no significant subject-by-formulation interaction, period and sequence effects. The intra-subject variabilities were at least 20-fold lower than the inter-subject ones for Cmax, AUC0-t and AUC0-inf. In all four BE calculations, the 90% CIs for the T/R ratios of studied pharmacokinetics parameters fell within the 80&ndash;125% range proposed by most regulatory agencies]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Prion diseases are a unique category of illness, affecting both animals and humans, where the underlying pathogenesis is related to a conformation change of the cellular form of a normal, self-protein called a prion protein (PrPC [C for cellular]) to a pathological and infectious conformation known as scrapie form (PrPSc [Sc for scrapie]). Currently, all prion diseases are without effective treatment and are universally fatal. The emergence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease has highlighted the need to develop possible therapies. In Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease (AD), which has similarities to prion diseases, both passive and active immunisation have been shown to be highly effective at preventing disease and cognitive deficits in model animals. In a human trial of active vaccination in AD, despite indications of cognitive benefits in patients with an adequate humoral response, 6% of patients developed significant complications related to excessive cell-mediated immunity. This experience highlights that immunotherapies designed to be directed against a self-antigen have to finely balance an effective humoral immune response with potential autoimmune toxicity. Many prion diseases have the gut as a portal of infectious agent entry. This makes mucosal immunisation a potentially very attractive method to partially or completely prevent prion entry across the gut barrier and to also produce a modulated immune response that is unlikely to be associated with any toxicity. The authors&rsquo; recent results using an attenuated Salmonella vaccine strain expressing the prion protein show that mucosal vaccination can partially protect against prion infection from a peripheral source, suggesting the feasibility of this approach.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Quillaja saponins have an intrinsic capacity to interact with membrane lipids that self-assembles in nanoparticles (immu nostimulating complexes or ISCOM-matrices) with outstanding immunoadjuvant activity and low toxicity profle. However, the expensive and laborious purifcation processes applied to purify Quillaja saponins used to assemble ISCOM-matrices show an important drawback in the large-scale use of this vaccine adjuvant. Thus, in this study, we describe a protocol to appropriately formulate ISCOM-matrices using the raw aqueous extract (AE) of Quillaja lancifolia leaves. In the presence of lipids, AE was able to self-assemble in nanostructures that resembles immunostimulating complexes (ISCOM). These nega tively charged nanoparticles of approximately 40 nm were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. In addition, well-known saponins with remarkable immunoadjuvant activity, as QS-21, were detected into nanoparticles. Thus, the easier, robust, cheaper, and environmentally friendly method developed here may be an alternative to the classical methods for ISCOM-matrices production that use high-purifed saponins.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A protein fraction migrating as a Mr 24 kDa band on SDS-PAGE was isolated by affinity chromatography on glutathione-agarose from a soluble extract of E. granulosus protoscoleces from sheep(UK). This fraction had glutathione S-transferase activity of 0.4 &mu;mol min&minus;1 mg&minus;1 when measured using a standard synthetic substrate and its determined N-terminal amino acid sequence most closely resembled Mu class gluthathione S-transferases. In addition, protoscoleces from the distinct sheep and horse E. granulosus strains showed a different pattern of glutathione-binding proteins: the Mr 24 kDa species was obtained in both cases whereas an additional band of slightly faster electrophoretic mobility was isolated from horse(UK) protoscoleces.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Echinococcus multilocularis metacestodes are fluid-filled, vesicle-like organisms, which are characterized by continuous asexual proliferation via external budding of daughter vesicles, predominantly in the livers of infected individuals. Tumor-like growth eventually leads to the disease alveolar echinococcosis (AE). We employed the monoclonal antibody (MAb) E492/G1, previously shown to be directed against a carbohydrate-rich, immunomodulatory fraction of Echinococcus granulosus, to characterize potentially related components in E. multilocularis. Immunofluorescence studies demonstrated that MAb E492/G1-reactive epitopes were found predominantly on the laminated layer and in the periphery of developing brood capsules. The respective molecules were continuously released into the exterior medium and were also found in the parasite vesicle fluid. The MAb E492/G1-reactive fraction in E. multilocularis, named Em492 antigen, was isolated by immunoaffinity chromatography. Em492 antigen had a protein/carbohydrate ratio of 0.25, reacted with a series of lectins, and is related to the laminated layer-associated Em2(G11) antigen. The epitope recognized by MAb E492/G1 was sensitive to sodium periodate but was not affected by protease treatment. Anti-Em492 immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) and IgG2 and, at lower levels, IgG3 were found in sera of mice suffering from experimentally induced secondary, but not primary, AE. However, with regard to cellular immunity, a suppressive effect on concanavalin A- or crude parasite extract-induced splenocyte proliferation in these mice was observed upon addition of Em492 antigen, but trypan blue exclusion tests and transmission electron microscopy failed to reveal any cytotoxic effect in Em492 antigen-treated spleen cells. This indicated that Em492 antigen could be modulating the periparasitic cellular environment during E. multilocularis infection through as yet unidentified mechanisms and could be one of the factors contributing to immunosuppressive events that occur at the host-parasite interface.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Galactomannans from the endosperm of mature seeds of Prosopis affinis were isolated following different extraction procedures in yields of up to 64%. The polysaccharides were characterized by HPLC, GC-MS, and NMR spectroscopy, and their physicochemical properties were studied by SEC/MALLS-QUELS/RI and rheological methods. The monosaccharide composition of the extracted galactomannans showed only mannose and galactose in a &sim;1.5 ratio, similar to galactomannans found in guar gum and obtained from other Prosopis species. The structural characterization showed that these polysaccharides are composed by a &beta;-(1&rarr;4)-linked mannose backbone with galactopyranosyl residues attached through &alpha;-(1&rarr;6) linkages. The weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of the P. affinis galactomannans went from (1.6 &plusmn; 0.2) x 106 to (1.8 &plusmn; 0.1) x 106 g/mol, and the intrinsic viscosity, in the 9.9 to 10.7 dL/g range, was comparable to that reported for other extracts from the Prosopis genre. Although the molecular weight distribution and intrinsic viscosity were dependent on the extraction procedure, the mannose-to-galactose ratio was almost invariant. Conformation plots showed that the polymer extracted at higher temperatures is more cohesive, a characteristic that could be attributed to a greater number of polymer-polymer interactions. Our findings show that the P. affinis galactomannan has nearly monomodal molecular weight distribution, functional properties similar to those of guar gum, and can be isolated from an abundant and readily available non-traditional source. It therefore represents a promising new biomaterial for the food and pharmaceutical industries that can be produced from the regional native flora in a sustainable way.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Melanoidins, the brown-colored compounds formed through the Maillard reaction, are responsible for color development in dulce de leche (DL), a popular confectionary dairy product in the R&iacute;o de la Plata region, particularly in Uruguay and Argentina. Color is a critical quality parameter that strongly influences consumer preference. This work aimed to develop a method to perform preliminary structural characterization of the chromophores produced by the Maillard reaction. Melanoidins are present in a water-insoluble fraction, linked to a protein backbone, conforming melanoproteins of high molecular weight. The insoluble melanoprotein fraction (10% total solids) was isolated, and the chromophores released by proteolysis and isolated by gel-permeation chromatography. The analysis of the products revealed that they present a high degree of molecular weight (MW) polydispersity, in a range of 300 to 2000 Da, where the compounds of higher molecular weight contributed the most to the color of the product. The isolated fractions were further analyzed by RP-HPLC using a diode array detector (DAD) detector. These results, together with H-NMR data, suggested that the chromophores isolated belonged to a relatively simple mixture of aromatic products with higher hydrophobic character relative to other products of the melanoprotein digestion.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Aquifers are among the main freshwater sources. The Raig&oacute;n aquifer is susceptible to contamination, mainly by nitrate and pesticides, such as atrazine, due to increasing agricultural activities in the area. The capacity of indigenous bacteria to attenuate nitrate contamination in different wells of this aquifer was assessed by measuring denitrification rates with either acetate plus succinate or nitrate amendments. Denitrification activity in nitrate-amended assays was significantly higher than in unamended assays, particularly in groundwater from wells where nitrate concentration was 33.5 mg L(-1) or lower. Furthermore, groundwater denitrifiers capable of using acetate or succinate as electron donors were isolated, identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and evaluated for functional denitrification genes (nirS, nirK and nosZ). Phylogenetic affiliation of 54 isolates showed that all members belonged to nine different genera within the Proteobacteria (Bosea, Ochrobactrum, Azospira, Zoogloea, Acidovorax, Achromobacter, Vogesella, Stenotrophomonas and Pseudomonas). In addition, isolate AR28 that clustered separately from validly described species could potentially belong to a new genus. The majority of the isolates were related to species belonging to previously reported denitrifying genera. However, the phylogeny of the nirS and nosZ genes revealed new sequences of these functional genes. To our knowledge, this is the first isolation and sequencing of the nirS gene from the genus Vogesella, as well as the nosZ gene from the genera Acidovorax and Zoogloea. The results indicated that indigenous bacteria in the Raig&oacute;n aquifer had the capacity to overcome high nitrate contamination and exhibited functional gene diversity.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Milk fat/protein degrading microorganisms were isolated from different locations of a dairy wastewater treatment system with the goal of developing an inoculum for bioaugmentation strategies. Eight isolates, identified by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis as belonging to the genera Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Acinetobacter, were tested for their ability to remove COD and protein from a milk-based medium (3000 mg/ L COD) and compared to a commercial bioaugmentation inoculum. The Acinetobacter isolate exhibited a pellet-type growth in liquid culture, a property that could potentially aid in the separation of microbes and liquid phase following treatment. Based on the individual degradation capacity and growth behavior of the isolates, three microorganisms were further selected and tested together. This consortium exhibited a COD removal similar to the commercial inoculum (57% and 63%, respectively), but higher protein (consortium: 93%; commercial inoculum: 54%), and fat removals (consortium: 75%; commercial inoculum: 38%).]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Two Streptomyces spp. strains responsible for potato common scab infections in Uruguay which do not produce diketopiperazines were identified through whole-genome sequencing, and the virulence factor produced by one of them was isolated and characterized. Phylogenetic analysis showed that both pathogenic strains can be identified as S. niveiscabiei, and the structure of the phytotoxin was elucidated as that of the polyketide desmethylmensacarcin using MS and NMR methods. The metabolite is produced in yields of ∼200 mg/L of culture media, induces deep necrotic lesions on potato tubers, stuns root and shoot growth in radish seedlings, and is comparatively more aggressive than thaxtomin A. This is the first time that desmethylmensacarcin, a member of a class of compounds known for their antitumor and antibiotic activity, is associated with phytotoxicity. More importantly, it represents the discovery of a new virulence factor related to potato common scab, an economically-important disease affecting potato production worldwide.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The isolation of three new N-methylated piperidine-3-ol alkaloids from the bark of Prosopis affinis Spreng. (&Ntilde;andubay) is described. Together with MS and IR data, results from 1D and 2D NMR experiments allowed for the identification of N‑methyl-2-isocassine, N‑methyl-6-isocassine, and N‑methyl-6-isocarnavaline. Inspection of 1D-NOESY spectra and coupling constant data revealed that the heterocyclic moiety of the alkaloids is in fast conformational equilibrium in solution, and this behavior had to be taken into account in order to determine the relative configuration of the chiral centers of the piperidine rings.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Our interest in this compound was rekindled when Ishitsuka et al. described a related diterpene monoacetate 3 from Pachydictyon coriaceum.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A lectin from cat liver has been identified and purified by affinity chromatography on asialofetuin-Sepharose. One hundred micrograms of lectin was obtained from one cat liver with a purification factor of 1561. The lectin agglutinates trypsin-treated rabbit and cow erythrocytes. Hemagglutination was inhibited only by saccharides containing -galactosyl residues, of which the 1-amine-1-deoxy- -D-galactose was the most potent one by inhibiting hemagglutination at a concentration of 12.5 mM, followed by melibiose, trehalose and galactose. The lectin has a subunit molecular mass of 14.4 kDa determined by SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions and a pI of 4.85. Compared with the composition of lectins from calf heart and porcine heart, cat liver lectin contains approximately the same amount of cysteine, half the amount of glycine, twice as much arginine and threonine, and three times the amounts of tyrosine and methionine. Cat liver lectin contains four cysteine residues per subunit, all of them in the reduced form. Their lack of reactivity towards thiol-reactive supports suggests they are not exposed on the lectin surface. The protein apparently has a blocked N-terminus. The purified lectin was stable for up to 20 months stored at +4 C in buffer supplemented with 4 mM -mercaptoethanol. Results indicated that this lectin belongs to the family of soluble -galactoside-binding lectins, also known as galectins, which are expressed in a wide range of vertebrate tissues.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Some unique subclasses of Camelidae antibodies are devoid of the light chain, and the antigen binding site is comprised exclusively of the variable domain of the heavy chain (VHH). Although conventional antibodies dominate current assay development, recombinant VHHs have a high potential as alternative reagents for the next generation of immunoassay. We expressed VHHs from an immunized alpaca and developed a VHH-based immunoassay using 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA), a major metabolite of pyrethroid insecticides as a model system. A phage VHH library was constructed, and seven VHH clones were selected by competitive binding with 3-PBA. The best immunoassay developed with one of these VHHs showed an IC50 of 1.4 ng/mL (limit of detection (LOD) = 0.1 ng/mL). These parameters were further improved by using the phage borne VHH, IC50 = 0.1 ng/mL and LOD = 0.01 ng/mL. Both assays showed a similar tolerance to methanol and dimethylsulfoxide up to 50% in assay buffer. The assay was highly specific to 3-PBA and its 4- hydroxylated derivative, 4-hydroxy 3-PBA, (150% cross reactivity) with negligible cross reactivity with other tested structural analogues, and the recovery from spiked urine sample ranged from 80 to 112%.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Thione S-methylide, parent species of the thiocarbonyl ylide family, is a 1,3-dipolar species on the [C2SH4] potential energy surface, not so much studied as its isomers, thiirane, vinyl thiol, and thioacetaldehyde. The conrotatory ring-closure reaction toward thiirane was studied in the 90s, but no complete analysis of the potential energy surface is available. In this paper, we report a computational study of the reaction scheme linking all species. We employed several computational methods (density functional theory, CCSD(T) composite schemes, and CASSCF/CASPT2 multireference procedures) to find the best description of thione S-methylide, its isomers, and transition states. The barrier from thiirane to thione Smethylide amounts to 52.2 kcal mol&minus;1 (against 17.6 kcal mol&minus;1 for the direct one), explaining why thiocarbonyl ylides cannot be prepared from thiiranes. Conversion of thiirane to vinyl thiol implies a large barrier, supporting why the reaction has been observed only at high temperatures.<br />Fragmentations of thiirane to S(3P) or S(1D) and ethylene as well as decomposition to hydrogen sulfide plus acetylene were also explored. Triplet and singlet open-shell species were identified as intermediates in the fragmentations, with energies lower than the transition state between thiirane and vinyl thiol, explaining the preference of the latter at low temperatures.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>
