<dcterms:abstract>The local crystal structure of Y3NbO7 was probed using neutron total scattering. Five different structural models were fit to the experimental pair distribution function of this material up to 15 Å. Fits of defect fluorite (Fm3m), pyrochlore (Fd3m), and orthorhombic C weberite models (C2221) were attempted based on prior structural investigations of Y3NbO7 and related fluorite-based materials. Orthorhombic P weberite (P2221) and monoclinic weberite models (P1121) were derived via symmetry reduction of the orthorhombic C weberite structure. All models except monoclinic weberite failed to reproduce the experimental pair distribution function. Misfits were clearly visible for peaks arising from atom pairs within the first coordination shell (defect fluorite and pyrochlore) and beyond (orthorhombic C and P weberite). By contrast, monoclinic weberite (γ ≈ 91.8◦) provided an excellent fit, with no major misfits observed. This unit cell features distorted YO8 dodecahedra, YO7 monocapped octahedra, and NbO6 octahedra as building blocks. Comparison between the topologies of the cationic and anionic substructures in monoclinic weberite and its parent orthorhombic C structure revealed displacements of the metal atoms along the [100] direction and a less compact spatial distribution of oxygen atoms along the a axis. The monoclinic weberite model presented herein may serve as a starting point to revisit structural modeling of fluorite-based materials with challenging local structures</dcterms:abstract>

The study was mainly focused on the structural, microstructural, electrical and optical characterization of these nanoscale heterostructures by means of X ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman, UV–vis and impedance spectroscopies. Our nanoscale heterostructures yielded a significant enhancement in the electric conductivity interpreted in terms of favorable interactions between the NS-GQD and the NaNT acting as proper connectors. Finally, our QDSSC prototype exhibits promising values for diffusion coefficient and recombination times as evidenced by means of impedance modulated photocurrent and photovoltage spectroscopies. Also, we consider that these materials could be further explored for electron transport layers applications in order to exploit the advantages regarding electron transport properties.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>There is scarce information on the vibrational and thermal properties of small Ni clusters. Here, the outcomes of ab initio spin-polarized density functional theory calculations on the size and geometry effects upon the vibrational and thermal properties of Nin (n = 13 and 55) clusters, are discussed. For theses clusters a comparison is presented between the closed shell symmetric octahedral (Oh) and the icosahedral (Ih) geometries. The results indicate that the Ih isomers are lower in energy. Besides, ab initio molecular dynamics runs at T = 300K show that Ni13 and Ni55 clusters transform from their initial Oh geometries towards the corresponding Ih ones. For Ni13, we also consider the lowest energy less symmetric layered 1-3-6-3 structure, and the cuboid, recently observed experimentally for Pt13, which is competitive in energy but is unstable, as phonon analysis reveals. We calculate their vibrational density of states (νDOS) and heat capacity, and compare with the Ni FCC bulk counterpart. The characteristic features of the νDOS curves of these clusters are interpreted in terms of the clusters’ sizes, the interatomic distance contractions, the bond order values as well as the internal pressure and strains of the clusters. We find that the softest possible frequency of the clusters is size and structure-dependent, being the smallest for the Oh ones. We identify mostly shear, tangential type displacements involving mainly surface atoms for the lowest frequency of the spectra of both Ih and Oh isomers. For the maximum frequencies of these clusters the central atom shows anti-phase movements against groups of nearest neighbor atoms. An excess of heat capacity at low temperatures with respect to the bulk is found, while at high temperatures a constant limiting value, close but lower to the Dulong and Petit value, is determined.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Crystal structures can strongly deviate from bulk states when confined into nanodomains. These deviations may deeply affect properties and reactivity and then call for a close examination. In this work, we address the case where extended crystal defects spread through a whole solid and then yield an aperiodic structure and specific reactivity. We focus on iron boride, α-FeB, whose structure has not been elucidated yet, thus hindering the understanding of its properties. We synthesize the two known phases, α-FeB and β-FeB, in molten salts at 600 and 1100 °C, respectively. The experimental X-ray diffraction (XRD) data cannot be satisfactorily accounted for by a periodic crystal structure. We then model the compound as a stochastic assembly of layers of two structure types. Refinement of the powder XRD pattern by considering the explicit scattering interference of the different layers allows quantitative evaluation of the size of these domains and of the stacking faults between them. We, therefore, demonstrate that α-FeB is an intergrowth of nanometer-thick slabs of two structure types, β-FeB and CrB-type structures, in similar proportions. We finally discuss the implications of this novel structure on the reactivity of the material and its ability to perform insertion reactions by comparing the reactivities of α-FeB and β FeB as reagents in the synthesis of a model layered material: Fe2AlB2. Using synchrotron-based in situ X-ray diffraction, we elucidate the mechanisms of the formation of Fe2AlB2. We highlight the higher reactivity of the intergrowth α-FeB in agreement with structural relationships.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Background: Labels are a key element of the marketing strategies of infant formula companies, and often include text or images that idealize their use, undermining efforts to promote breastfeeding. Research Aims: To evaluate the prevalence of marketing cues that idealize infant formula on labels of products commercialized in Uruguay and to assess changes after a periodic monitoring of compliance with the International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes (IC). Method: This study is a descriptive, observational, and longitudinal assessment of the information included on infant formula labels. The first data collection was in 2019, as part of a periodic assessment to monitor the marketing of human-milk substitutes. In 2021, the same products were purchased to evaluate changes in their labels. Thirty-eight products were identified in 2019, of which 33 were still available in 2021. All information available on the labels was analyzed through content analysis. Results: Most products included at least one textual or visual marketing cue idealizing infant formula in both 2019 (n=30, 91%) and 2021 (n=29, 88%). This represents a violation of both the IC and national regulations. References to nutritional composition were the most frequent marketing cue, followed by references to child growth and development. No relevant changes were observed after the periodic assessment conducted by the Uruguayan government. Conclusions: Monitoring compliance with the IC per se cannot be expected to trigger changes in the marketing strategies of infant formula companies. More explicit regulations and strong enforcement mechanisms are needed to end the inappropriate marketing practices on infant formula labels.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Biorsorbents can be used to pack minicolumns for the preconcentration of trace elements and thus improve the detection limits of some techniques. A biosorbent is efficient when presents binding sites as carbonyls, amines, and carboxylic groups, among others. Thus, natural materials as the sisal fiber (Agave sisalana) may be a good candidate. Sisal fiber demonstrated good performance for Cu preconcentration when it was impregnated with alizarine fluorine blue (AFB). However, very good results were reported for the first time by our group with this column, without the use of additional reagents for both, Mn and Cu determinations in water samples by using microwave plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (MP AES). In this paper a comparison of the sisal fiber preparation with and without impregnation with AFB is presented and discussed in terms of the figures of merit, including precision, trueness, limits of detection and quantification. In addition to that, the number of determinations without the need of replacement of the solid phase was evaluated. Results demonstrated that the impregnation of sisal fiber with AFB does not leads to an improvement in the analytical performance. Analytical Greenness Metric Approach (AGREE) was used to evaluate the greenness of both methods and results obtained were similar. Despite this, the method without impregnation of the fiber has some remarkable advantages, that contributes to Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC), related to the lifetime of the sorbent, not considered in the AGREE tool.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Even beer being the most consumed alcoholic beverage around the world, there is not enough information generated for craft beers produced in Latin America, for either volatile profiles or physicochemical studies. In this work, the chemical and volatile components of ten commercial Blond Ale and nine Indian Pale Ale (IPA) beers from the Uruguayan market were studied using GC–MS. Principal component analysis applied to the data allowed differentiation among the two groups of samples while the volatile compounds and physicochemical parameters responsible for these differences were identified. The physicochemical properties revealed a great diversity between all beer samples even within the same beer style. The main significant differences were ob tained for alcohol, polyphenols, bitterness, colour, and pH. Most Blond Ale beer samples were differentiated from IPA ones by raw fermentation aroma compounds such as 1-pentanol, 1-hexanol, hexanoic and isobutyric acids, 4- vinyl guaiacol, and 5,5-dimethyl-2(5H)-furanone. This is the first work that contributes to the knowledge of Uruguayan craft beers. The study also showed the ability of most of the Uruguayan microbreweries to brew Blond Ale and IPA craft beer styles that meet international standards for physicochemical quality.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Biogenic silver nanoparticles are synthesized through silver(I) reduction, which is promoted by biomolecules available in the biological world and mostly obtained from plant extracts, fungal bioproduction, and some bacteria. The exact mechanisms accounting for such oxidoreduction processes are not fully known. However, some studies have already mentioned oxidoreductases, cofactors (nicotinamide adenine dinucelotide hydrogen (NADH), dihydroflavine-adenine dinucleotid (FADH2)), and phenolic compounds, as the main reductive species engaged in the formation of silver(0) and silver nanoparticles (silver NPs) synthesis. Biosynthesis is a one-pot process that leads to stable silver NP colloids that, regarding their size, shape, and uniformity, can be successfully controlled; and show great stability when one takes into account their surface capping by some biomolecules that as well take part in their synthesis. Although great efforts have been made to feature capping biomolecules and their interactions with silver NP surfaces, knowledge of the quantity (exact number per cm2 ) and type of biomolecules that cap or surround silver NPs remains limited. The literature provides detailed information on protein capping, but it still shows gaps regarding many aspects of fine biophysical protein featuring. The reason why certain proteins prefer to interact with silver NP surface and form chemical bonds, whereas others rather have intermolecular interaction with the first layer of proteins remains unknown. Assessing capping proteins’ involvement in the bioactivity of biogenic silver NPs is another relevant research field. Certain proteins enhance bioactivity of silver NPs and lower toxicity; however, the way antimicrobial processes benefit from protein capping is yet to be discovered. Finally, biogenic silver NPs can be found both in the environment and in water; moreover, their additional activity and behavior must be known or, at least, hypothesized.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Monoterpenes are frequently the most common and distinctive components of essential oils. Most of them (the so-called regular monoterpenes) obey the Ruzicka’s Isoprene Biogenetic Rule, which means that the assembly of the bioactive isoprene building blocks (IPP and DMAPP) takes place in a head-to tail fashion. However, in some cases, the occurrence of completely different biogenetic assemblies gives rise to irregular monoterpenes that do not go from head-to-tail. The most common representatives of this type being artemisyl, chrysanthemyl, lavandulyl, and santolinyl skeletons. In addition, rearrangements from regular compounds are also frequently observed giving rise to a new category of irregular monoterpenes, the rearranged ones. Finally, other closely related group is made up by the degraded monoterpenes (or nor-monoterpenes or homoterpenes),compounds that lose carbon atoms during their biosynthesis and that can be considered also as “irregulars”. This chapter discusses the role of these three groups of compounds as all of them have eventually been identified in essential oils. Emphasis will be placed on rearranged monoterpenes, especially ortho-menthane derivatives, due to the paucity of literature dealing with this topic. Carquejol and piquerols, and some of their derivatives are reviewed according to their occurrence, possible biosynthesis, and biological properties. Semi-synthesis will also be discussed, as potentially bioactive compounds could be obtained. Finally, some practical aspects for the preparation of carquejol oxide (7,8-epoxy carquejol), a novel derivative of the ortho-menthane family, will be presented.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The field-gathered pollen collected by honey bees, named corbicular pollen, is a source of information from the beehive’s environment. Palynological analysis of pollen collected by honey bees offers details on the amounts and types of botanical resources they visited. Pollen can be contaminated due to agricultural practices, which can be useful as a source of information of the type and amount of pollutants honey bees bring to the hive. In the present work, palynological and pesticide residue analyses were performed in 27 samples of corbicular pollen from 8 apiaries located in different agroecosystems from Uruguay. Most of the pollen in each sample, except one, came from non-cultivated and native flora species, independently from the apiaries location: 43 botanical resources were identified but only 12 of them corresponded to cultivated plants. Pesticide residues analysis was targeted to 33 compounds and performed by chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry techniques, using validated protocols. Different loads and types of pesticides were detected in the different agroecosystems: 72 pesticide residues corresponding to 13 active substances in a concentration range from 0.4 to 90 µg kg-1 . The Pollen Hazard Quotient (PHQ) was calculated in order to rank pesticides and agroecosystems according to honey bee risk-based criteria. The combination of palynological studies of each sample coupled to the determination of its pesticide loads´, permitted to pose questions about the different possible origins of the exposure of honey bees to pesticides.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>So far, the growth of graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures on different metallic substrates has been achieved mainly by chemical vapor depositions techniques at ultrahigh vacuum conditions. We report for the first time, evidence of graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures via zinc dimethoxide hydrolysis−condensation under ambient conditions on a Au(111) gold-coated surface. Moreover, we also show that these systems can be monitored using a relatively accessible instrumentation technique such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) in addition to other complementary techniques. Our experimental data were supported by computational simulations of graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures using DFT and TD-DFT methodologies. For the first time, the SERS features of graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures with hydroxyl-terminated edges are presented in addition to their corresponding calculated Raman features for periodic and nanosized models. The preparation and monitoring of these graphene-like ZnO structures and nanostructures by means of more accessible techniques is a key to driving advances in their performance as novel materials for energy, sensing, and catalysis applications.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Nutritional warning labels are gaining relevance in the region of the Americas as a policy tool to reduce in formation asymmetry and encourage healthier food choices. However, empirical evidence about consumer ex periences with warning labels after implementation is still scarce. In this context, the aim of the present work was to explore the use of nutritional warning labels after policy implementation in Uruguay, using a combination of eye-tracking and self-reported data. The study was conducted in three supermarkets, in two regional capitals, 19 months after the entry into force of the policy. A total of 224 participants were intercepted while entering the facilities of the supermarket and asked to wear a mobile eye-tracker while making their food purchases. Then, they were asked a series of questions about their awareness and use of warning labels. Although participants reported high awareness and understanding of the labels, active search and use at the point of purchase was low. Only 6% of the consumers declared having actively searched for the warning labels and 7% fixated their gaze on the labels. The majority of the participants (72%) who declared having seen the warnings on a product, pur chased it anyway. However, 56% declared having changed their food choice decisions as a consequence of the implementation of the policy. Participants’ accounts about reasons for (not) taking into account the warning labels provide relevant insights for the development of strategies to encourage citizens to increase policy effectiveness and encourage healthier food choices.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Food-waste reduction could provide significant benefits in the transition towards more sustainable agri-food systems. Households account for a significant share of total food waste, both in emerging and industri alized countries. In Latin America and the Caribbean region, lack of data has been acknowledged. The present study explores household food waste in Uruguay, an emerging country, through food-waste diaries. Data from 142 households provided an estimate of food-waste quantity and composition comparable to those reported in developed countries. The economic value of food wasted monthly represented 11 per cent of the average per capita food expenditure. In terms of environmental impact, the average carbon footprint of household food waste was 0.15 tonnes of CO2 per person per year. These results highlight the need to develop communication campaigns and interventions to raise awareness of the multiple impacts of household food waste in Uruguay.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The plantation and natural forests of South America have been highly impacted by native and exotic pests in recent decades. The interaction of emerging invasive pests, climate change, and timber markets will define the region’s forests, with significant but uncertain ecological changes and economic losses expected. The Southern Cone Forest Health Group (SCFHG), a joint ad hoc initiative run by forest health professionals from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay, aims to strengthen relationships between the forestry industry, stakeholders, academia, and government agencies across the region. Here, we highlight regional strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities to address forest health issues in the region. A regional approach with a strong communication network is relevant for future actions. In the current global scenario of invasive species and climate change, the implementation of practices that incorporate the resilience of forest ecosystems and sustainable management needs to be prioritized in forest policy across the region. Understanding that pests and pathogens do not recognize borders, we call on governments and organizations to support joint actions with agreements and adequate resources to enhance our regional capabilities.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Food losses, defined as a reduction in the quantity and quality of food during production and storage, impact food safety and security. Losses caused by plant pathogens are among the most significant. Chemical pesticides have been extensively used to prevent microbial diseases. Their toxicity and reduced efficacy, however, have encouraged investigators to develop alternatives. Alternatives based on microbial biopesticides tend to be safer and more environmentally benign than conventional pesticides. In recent years, formulations based on biopesticides have progressively increased in number and diversity and have attracted commercial interest. Understanding the mechanisms by which biopesticides control the disease is fundamental to achieving optimal disease control. Biocontrol mechanisms can be divided into two main categories: those related to the ability to inhibit pathogens or their virulence factors, and those that enhance host plant fitness and induce disease resistance. Here, the first type of strategy is reviewed, which is directly mediated by physical contact between biocontrol agents and pathogens or indirectly by exposure of a pathogen to antimicrobial or microbial-inhibiting compounds produced by the microbial antagonist. Mechanisms involving physical contact include mycophagy, destruction of pathogenic bacteria by bacteriophages or predation, and disease inhibition by topical applications of specific dsRNA. Indirect mechanisms that do not involve direct contact with a pathogen include the production of antimicrobial compounds, competition, and virulence factor suppression by quorum quenching. These topics are reviewed and discussed.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The full utilization of the main components in the lignocellulosic biomass is the major goal from a biorefinery point of view, giving not only environmental benefits but also making the process economically viable. In this sense the solid residue obtained in bioethanol production after steam explosion pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentation of the lignocellulosic biomass, was studied for further valorization. Two different residues were analyzed, one generated by the production of cellulosic ethanol from an energy crop such as switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) and the other, from wood (Eucalyptus globulus). The chemical composition of these by-products showed that they were mainly composed of lignin with a total content range from 70 to 83% (w/w) and small amounts of cellulose and hemicellulose. The present work was focused on devising a new alternative for processing these materials, based on the ability of the ionic liquids (IL) to dissolve lignocellulosic biomass. The resulting mixture of biopolymers and IL constituted the raw material for developing new insoluble biocatalysts. Active hydrogels based on fungal laccase from Dichostereum sordulentum 1488 were attained. A multifactorial analysis of the main variables involved in the immobilization process enabled a more direct approach to improving hydrogel-bound activity. These hydrogels achieved a 97% reduction in the concentration of the estrogen ethinylestradiol, an emerging contaminant of particular concern due to its endocrine activity. The novel biocatalysts based on fungal laccase entrapped on a matrix made from a by-product of second-generation bioethanol production presents great potential for performing heterogeneous catalysis offering extra value to the ethanol biorefinery.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Our research group has made incursions into the scarcely known coordination chemistry of rhenium(II). The literature shows that Re(II) mononuclear complexes are attractive in molecular magnetism due to high magnetic anisotropy because of a significant spin-orbit coupling, making them a potential source for new molecule-based magnets. In this work, we present the preparation of four novel Re(II) compounds of general formula NBu4 [Re(NO)Br4 (L)] [NBu4 + = tetra-n-butylammonium: L = imidazole (1), pyrazole (2), 1,2,4-triazole (3) and 1H-tetrazole (4)]. The four compounds were fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and cryomagnetic measurements in the temperature range of 1.8–300 K. Their crystal structures consist of mononuclear [Re(NO)Br4 (L)]− complex anions and NBu4 + cations. Each Re(II) ion is six-coordinate with a linear nitrosyl group and one monodentate nitrogen-donor (L), which are trans-positioned, plus four bromide groups, building a tetragonally distorted octahedral surrounding. The inter-anionic contacts were thoroughly analyzed using Hirshfeld surface analyses (plots over the dnorm, shape index, and 2D fingerprints). Cryomagnetic measurements show that these complexes behave as quasi-magnetically isolated spin doublets with weak antiferromagnetic interactions at low temperatures. The magnetic behavior of Re(II) was modeled by the influence of the ligand field, tetragonal distortion, spin-orbit coupling, and covalence effects. In addition, the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling was correlated to the nature of the intermolecular interactions.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The CO2 reduction reaction on Ag in the presence of surface plasmons are of strong interest in photocatalysis. Here, two Density Functional Theory (DFT) approaches are proposed to localize charges at the Ag surface to mimic surface plasmon excitation. These calculations predict charge localization at the outermost surface layer, a result confirmed via light excitation at the plasmon resonance modeled by Density Functional Tight Binding Hamiltonian (DFTB) theory. The CO2(gas) reduction initial steps are studied by DFT models showing that bonded species can be created on top of an Ag-atom in the presence of extra charges. A second CO2 molecule can assist the first molecule, decreasing the charge carrier density requirement for CO2 reduction bonded species. A Molecular Dynamics (MD) study shows a possible interaction among CO2 molecule. These results show that a static DFT simulation can mimic charge localization resulting from surface plasmon effects, thus enabling studies on surface plasmon-enhanced chemical reactions, paving the way for future time-dependent (TD) studies.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Despite the success of immune checkpoint blockade for cancer therapy, many patients do not respond adequately. We aimed to improve this therapy by optimizing both the antibodies and their delivery route, using small monodomain antibodies (nanobodies) delivered locally with a self-amplifying RNA (saRNA) vector based on Semliki Forest virus (SFV). We generated nanobodies against PD-1 and PD-L1 able to inhibit both human and mouse interactions. Incorporation of a dimerization domain reduced PD-1/PD-L1 IC50 by 8- and 40-fold for anti- PD-L1 and anti-PD-1 nanobodies, respectively. SFV viral particles expressing dimeric nanobodies showed a potent antitumor response in the MC38 model, resulting in >50% complete regressions, and showed better therapeutic efficacy compared to vectors expressing conventional antibodies. These effects were also observed in the B16 melanoma model. Although a short-term expression of nanobodies was observed due to the cytopathic nature of the saRNA vector, it was enough to generate a strong proinflammatory response in tumors, increasing infiltration of NK and CD8+ T cells. Delivery of the SFV vector expressing dimeric nanobodies by local plasmid electroporation, which could be more easily translated to the clinic, also showed a potent antitumor effect.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Changes in climatic and environmental conditions can affect both, plant chemical molecular and atomic composition. Therefore, biomass carbon isotope composition is frequently used to gain information about the environmental conditions at the time a plant thrives. In this field, most studies use isotope values obtained from bulk samples. However, these values are a weighted average of the different plant compounds. The isotopic characterization of individual compounds represents a relevant analytical advance able to differentiate the isotopic composition of the main plant components i.e., polysaccharides, lignin, polypeptides, lipids, waxes, etc. Here, we investigate the link between molecular and isotope composition of bark and lignin extracted from three Eucalyptus species (E. grandis, E. dunnii and a hybrid E. grandis X E. dunnii) using pyrolysis compoundspecific isotope analysis (Py-CSIA). This technique, although not widely used, has been previously developed and applied, with different variants, to characterize plant products including lignin, sugars, and terpenes. Retrieved results for both bark and lignin samples showed the isotopic differences regarding the diverse biogenic groups, accounting for a 13C-enrichment in polysaccharides up to 2.5‰ compared to lignin methoxyphenols, which is consistent with the fractionation during metabolization of the plant. A strong positive correlation was found between the bulk isotope and compound-specific values, especially when applying a weight factor related to the relative abundance of each compound, which support the analytical suitability of this technique. Despite that bark from different origins provide very similar pyrolysis patterns, isotopic composition of relevant specific compounds can make the difference giving additional valuable information.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Biogas upgrading through dry reforming is a promising technology for converting biomass into high-value products such as synthesis gas. In this work, Ni-La-Ti catalysts were synthesized using different preparation methods (impregnation, coprecipitation and modified Pechini method) and evaluated in clean biogas dry reforming reaction at 800 ◦C using two different CH4/CO2 molar ratios (1.5 and 3) to study the effects of the different biogas qualities on catalytic activity and stability. Fresh and used catalysts were examined by several techniques including the BET method, XRD, ICP-AES, H2-TPR, CO2-TPD, EPR, Raman, TGA, SEM and TEM. The different catalytic activities obtained could be attributed to the different degree of Ni-La-Ti interaction. The catalyst prepared by impregnation shows the highest initial catalytic activity for the two CH4/CO2 ratios tested. However, it was observed that the formation of solid carbon took place to a greater extent on this catalyst. The catalyst prepared by the modified Pechini method showed good stability through a 100 h stability test using CH4/CO2 = 1.5 feed ratio. Characterization of the used catalyst confirmed the formation of mainly filamentous type carbon and high resistance to Ni sintering.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Vertical farming (alternatively, plant factories with artificial lighting) has the potential to contribute to sustainable food production and consumption and is relevant for several of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Already many consumers seem positive about vertical farming, but as fresh produce from vertical farming systems begin to become available to consumers, it is imperative that this positive attitude translates into purchase and consumption behaviour. In a multi-country study (USA, Australia, Germany and Singapore) where 2193 adult consumers (25–54 years old) took part in an online survey, the present quantitative research: i) investigated the aspects of vertical farming that are perceived positively and negatively by consumers, ii) measured stated intention to purchase lettuce from vertical farming, and iii) determined characteristics of vertical farming that are positive and negative drivers of intention to purchase. A largely positive attitude to vertical farming was confirmed, as well as the existence of smaller groups of people with negative and neutral/ ambivalent attitudes. Cross-cultural differences in attitudes to vertical farming also existed but these were relatively minor. On average, participants from USA were most positive, while those from Germany were least positive. Stated intention to purchase lettuce from vertical farming was ~70% (‘probably will buy’), and again stated likelihood was highest in USA (74%) and lowest in Germany (65%).
