    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The first experimental results about the growth and characterization of Pb1&minus;xCdxTe new high-Z ternary alloy, grown by Vapour Phase Epitaxy (VPE) onto CdTe single crystal substrates are presented. SEM images have shown a well-defined interface between the substrate and the heterostructure bulk, without voids or inclusions. EDX analysis in a line scan mode was done over the layer crossections. The Te, Pb and Cd concentration profiles were found, verifying a strong inter-diffusion in the metallic sublattices and confirming the existence of the Pb1&minus;xCdxTe ternary alloy. This has been also confirmed by X-ray diffraction measurements. For the longest growth times, two types of surface defects arose: PbTe aligned microcrystals and cylindrical-like Te-rich structures. Hall measurements showed that the carrier concentration of the layers decreases and the resistivity increases when the growth temperature increases. The influence of the surface defects on the electrical properties was also demonstrated.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Results showed that low-income mothers do not consider nutritional information when selecting food their children. Traditional nutritional labeling was perceived as complex, difficult to find, and difficult to understand. Participants stressed that they relied on the nutrition claims included on labels for assessing the healthfulness of food products. Semi-directive and directive front-of-pack labels were positively evaluated in terms of ease of interpretation. Participants preferred the traffic light system over other alternatives.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Protein glycosylation is an important post-translational modification underlying host&ndash;parasite interactions, which may determine the outcome of infection. Although Mesocestoides vogae represents an important model for investigating the various aspects of cestode biology, virtually no information is available about the structure and synthesis of glycans in this parasite. In this work, focused on the initiation pathway of mucin-type O-glycosylation in M. vogae, we characterized O-glycoproteins bearing the simple mucin-type cancer-associated Tn and sialyl-Tn antigens, and the expression and activity of ppGalNAc-T, the key enzyme responsible for the first step of mucin-type O-glycosylation. Using immunohistochemistry, Tn and sialyl-Tn antigens were detected mainly in the tegument (microtriches) and in parenchymal cells. Tn expression was also observed in lateral nerve cords. Both Tn and sialyl-Tn antigens were detected in in vitro cultured parasites. Based on their electrophoretic mobility, Tn- and sialyl-Tn-bearing glycoproteins from M. vogae were separated into several components of 22 to 60 kDa. The observation that Tn and sialyl-Tn glycoproteins remained in the 0.6 N perchloric acid-soluble fraction suggested that they could be good candidates for characterizing mucin-type glycosylation in this parasite. O-glycoproteins were purified and initially characterized using a proteomic approach. Immunohistochemical analysis of the tissue distribution of ppGalNAc-T revealed that this enzyme is expressed in the sub-tegumental region and in the parenchyma of the parasite. In M. vogae cultured in vitro, ppGalNAc-T was mainly detected in the suckers. Using a panel of 8 acceptor substrate synthetic peptides, we found that M. vogae ppGalNAc-T preferentially glycosylate threonine residues, the best substrates being peptides derived from human mucin MUC1 and from Trypanosoma cruzi mucin. These results suggest that M. vogae might represent a useful model to study O-glycosylation, and provide new research avenues for future studies on the glycopathobiology of helminth parasites.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Cystic echinococcosis is caused by the larval stages (hydatids) of ces tode parasites belonging to the species cluster Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, with E. granulosus sensu stricto being the main infecting species. Hydatids are blad derlike structures that attain large sizes within various internal organs of livestock ungulates and humans. Hydatids are protected by the massive acellular laminated layer (LL), composed mainly of mucins. Parasite growth requires LL turnover, and abundant LL-derived particles are found at infection sites in infected humans, raising the question of how LL materials are dealt with by the hosts. In this article, we show that E. granulosus sensu stricto LL mucins injected into mice are taken up by Kupffer cells, the liver macrophages exposed to the vascular space. This uptake is largely de pendent on the intact mucin glycans and on Clec4F, a C-type lectin receptor which, in rodents, is selectively expressed in Kupffer cells. This uptake mechanism operates on mucins injected both in soluble form intravenously (i.v.) and in particulate form intraperitoneally (i.p.). In mice harboring intraperitoneal infections by the same spe cies, LL mucins were found essentially only at the infection site and in the liver, where they were taken up by Kupffer cells via Clec4F. Therefore, shed LL materials circulate in the host, and Kupffer cells can act as a sink for these materials, even when the parasite grows in sites other than the liver.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In recent years major outbreaks of prion disease linked to oral exposure of the prion agent have occurred in animal and human populations. These disorders are associated with a conformational change of a normal protein, PrPC (prion protein cellular), to a toxic and infectious form, PrPSc (prion protein scrapie). None of the prionoses currently have an effective treatment. A limited number of active immunization approaches have been shown to slightly prolong the incubation period of prion infection. Active immunization in wild-type animals is hampered by auto-tolerance to PrP and potential toxicity. Here we report that mucosal vaccination with an attenuated Salmonella vaccine strain expressing the mouse PrP, is effective at overcoming tolerance to PrP and leads to a significant delay or prevention of prion disease in mice later exposed orally to the 139A scrapie strain. This mucosal vaccine induced gut anti-PrP immunoglobulin (Ig)A and systemic anti-PrP IgG. No toxicity was evident with this vaccination approach. This promising finding suggests that mucosal vaccination may be a useful method for overcoming tolerance to PrP and preventing prion infection among animal and potentially human populations at risk.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Several basis sets and MRCI methodologies are tested in order to assess the quality of the expected results. Calculation of the hydrogen transfer curves in the dimer leads to the proposition that the coupling of excited states of A&Prime; symmetry &mdash; correlating to the state C̃1B1 in the equilibrium geometry of the monomer&mdash;causes decomposition of the dimer into HO&radic; and H3O&radic; when it is attempted to obtain its resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization spectrum under similar conditions to those used for the water monomer.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Bisphosphonates are the most commonly prescribed drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis and other bone illnesses. Some of them have also shown antiparasitic activity. In search of improving the pharmacological profile of commercial bisphosphonates, our group had previously developed first row transition metal complexes with N-containing bisphosphonates (NBPs). In this work, we extended our studies to heteroleptic palladium&ndash;NBP complexes including DNA intercalating polypyridyl co-ligands (NN) with the aim of obtaining potential multi-target species. Complexes of the formula [Pd(NBP)2(NN)]&middot;2NaCl&middot;xH2O with NBP&thinsp;=&thinsp;alendronate (ale) or pamidronate (pam) and NN&thinsp;=&thinsp;1,10 phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2&prime;-bipyridine (bpy) were synthesized and fully characterized. All the obtained compounds were much more active in vitro against T. cruzi (amastigote form) than the corresponding NBP ligands. In addition, complexes were nontoxic to mammalian cells up to 50&ndash;100 &micro;M. Compounds with phen as ligand were 15 times more active than their bpy analogous. Related to the potential mechanism of action, all complexes were potent inhibitors of two parasitic enzymes of the isoprenoid biosynthetic pathway. No correlation between the anti-T. cruzi activity and the enzymatic inhibition results was observed. On the contrary, the high antiparasitic activity of phen-containing complexes could be related to their ability to interact with DNA in an intercalative-like mode. These rationally designed compounds are good candidates for further studies and good leaders for future drug developments.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A new automated method for the determination of glucose in honey is proposed. The method is based on multicommutated flow analysis (MCFA) and employs an immobilized glucose oxidase reactor and spectrophotometric detection at 505nm of the red quinoneimine formed (Trinder&rsquo;s method). The calibration curve obeyed a second order equation in the range 0&ndash;0.14 g L&minus;1 (h =&minus;2.2199 C2 + 1.3741C + 0.0077, r2 = 0.9991, where h is the peak height (absorbance) and C the concentration in g L&minus;1). The method was validated analyzing eight commercial samples, both by the AOAC 954.11 and 977.20 official methods. According to Student&rsquo;s t-test of mean values, at the confidence level of 95% the results obtained with the proposed method were in agreement with those obtained by the official methods. Precision (sr(%), n = 10) was 3% and the sampling frequency of the system was 20 samples h&minus;1.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A pilot annual monitoring survey (April 2018&ndash;March 2019) was conducted to investigate the presence of pesticides in superficial water and fish in Laguna del Cisne, one of the most critical drinking water sources in Uruguay. A total of 25 pesticide residues were detected in superficial water (89.3 % of the samples). Pesticide's temporal distribution was as sociated with crops and livestock practices, with higher occurrences in spring and summer than in autumn and winter. The most frequent compounds in superficial water were the insecticide chlorantraniliprole, and the herbicides glyph osate (including its metabolite AMPA) and metolachlor. The levels of Organochlorine pesticide, p,p&prime;-DDT, was in some cases two order of magnitude above the international water quality guidelines for Ambient Water Criteria. In fishes, eight different pesticides were detected, at concentrations from 1000 to 453,000 ng&middot;kg&minus;1 . The most frequent pesticides found were propiconazole, chlorpyrifos, and p,p&prime;-DDE. The widespread occurrence of pesticides in fish suggests poten tial exposure effects on fish populations and the aquatic ecosystem. The sampling approach of this work allowed mon itoring the continuous concentrations of several pesticides in surface waters and fishes to establish the influence from past and current agriculture practices in Laguna del Cisne basin. For safety measures, continuous monitoring programs must be performed in this system to prevent toxicity impacts on aquatic organisms and human health.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In this paper we report on the magnetic properties of pure bulk ferromagnetic graphite, obtained by a chemical route previously described. This magnetic graphite has been obtained by a vapor reaction consisting of a controlled etching on the graphite structure. By magnetic force microscopy we have verified that its magnetic properties are related to the topographic defects introduced in the pristine material. Also, the magnetic properties have been verified through magnetization measurements as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. At low temperatures s2 Kd the saturation magnetization reaches a value of 0.58 emu/g, leading to a defect concentration of 1250 ppm. The system is highly irreversible due to the inhomogeneity of the distribution of defects in the material. Two transition temperatures are detected, Tc1=115s5d K and Tc2 =315s5d K. These transitions could be associated to the weak coupling between ferromagnetic regions related to defects and to the ferromagnetism inside the defect regions.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Bacterial canker caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subspecies michiganensis (Cmm) has been a threat to tomato production in Uruguay for several years. In this study, 39 Cmm strains were collected from several outbreaks and production areas in Uruguay, and were identified by molecular assays and pathogenicity tests on a susceptible cultivar of tomato. In addition, a TaqMan assay targeting a putative two-component system sensor kinase gene demonstrated good specificity with all strains tested and gave no false negative results. The first epidemiological study of Cmm in this country was carried out in order to elucidate the origin of outbreaks and sources of infection and dissemination of the pathogen. Strains from Uruguay showed high genetic diversity based on a Multi Locus Sequence Typing analysis of five housekeeping genes. This approach revealed 36 sequence types (STs) within a worldwide collection of 108 Cmm strains. Ten STs correspond to strains solely isolated in Uruguay, including eight novel STs for the subspecies michiganensis. This high diversity reflects the introduction of new strains from different origins that most probably results from seed importation. This study provides relevant information about the distribution and origin of strains causing bacterial canker in Uruguay and will pave the way for the establishment of preventive measures to control the disease.]]></dcterms:abstract>

In this work |b we show that this assumption is correct for simulated data. For experimental data |b however |b significant deviations were observed although the system was aggregated at an electrolyte concentration well above the critical coagulations concentration. This indicates that residual cluster-cluster interactions are not completely absent in real experimental systems. In order to improve the description of the experimental data |b we developed a kernel that considers a monomer-monomer sticking probability explicity and accounts for the possibility of multiple monomer-monomer contacts in the cluster collision area.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Tomato bacterial canker caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis is one of the most important seed-borne tomato diseases around the globe. The disease was initially reported in 1993 in Iran, and it became a rising threat for the multibillion dollar tomato industry of the country during the last decade. In this study, using phylogeographic analyses, we determined genetic diversity and geographic distribution of C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis in Iran. Our field surveys showed that the pathogen is expanding into the southern and eastern areas of the country. Furthermore, multilocus sequence analysis and typing (MLSA/MLST) using the sequences of five housekeeping genes (atpD, gyrB, ppk, recA, and rpoB) revealed that 37 C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis strains isolated in Iran had high genetic diversity and placed in 15 sequence types (STs), while all the available 184 worldwide C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis sequences were placed in 43 STs. MLSA divided the worldwide C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis strains into two phylogroups (I and II). Among the 37 strains isolated in Iran, 30 strains clustered in phylogroup I, while 7 strains clustered in phylogroup II. Phylogeographic data inferred from the allelic profile of the five housekeeping genes suggested multiple introductions of C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis inoculum into Iran, while the geographic origin of the Iranian C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis strains remains undetermined. Further analyses using higher numbers of strains are warranted to decipher the evolutionary history of C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis in Iran.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Oxidative stress (OS) is an important consequence of exposure to toxic metals but it is unclear to what extent low-level metal exposures contribute to OS in children. We examined the cross-sectional association between urinary concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) and urinary markers of OS: F2-8&alpha; isoprostane and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxy-guanosine (8-OHdG). We also tested effect modification by dietary intakes. Of the 211 children aged 6-8 years living in Montevideo who were eligible for the study because they had at least one OS marker measured via ELISA, 143 were included in a complete-case analysis. Urinary metals were measured with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS: Pb, Cd) and high-performance liquid chromatography online with hydride generation ICP-MS (As-metabolites); concentrations were log2-transformed. All urinary markers were adjusted for specific gravity of urine. Two 24-h dietary recalls were conducted to estimate children's dietary intakes, including total fruit and vegetable consumption and vitamin C, zinc and fiber intake. Ordinary least square (OLS) and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regressions were used to estimate the association between metals and each OS marker as outcome. Metal exposure was generally low: median urinary As, Cd, Pb 9.6 &mu;g/L, 0.06 &mu;g/L and 1.9 &mu;g/L, respectively. Median 8-isoprostane concentration was 1.1 and 8-OHdG 39.6 ng/mL. Log2-transformed urinary As concentrations were positively associated with 8-OHdG concentrations (10.90 [3.82, 17.97]) in covariate-adjusted OLS models which also took account of exposure to Cd and Pb. In WQS, a mixture index was also associated with higher 8-OHdG (8.71 [1.12, 16.3] for each 25% increase in index value), mostly driven by As exposure. There was little evidence of effect modification by dietary antioxidants. In sum, even at low-level, As exposure is associated with detectable oxidative damage to the DNA.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors upon which the first order rate constant depends in order to assess the impact on the body-drug concentration when it changes throughout a treatment. A reasoning for linking the first order rate constants with several factors in a multiplicative way was proposed out taking into account kinetic and thermodynamic aspects. A multi-compartment model for drug disposition was analyzed and compartment mean drug concentrations at steady state were obtained as a function of the model kinetic constants. At the moment, only four factors were identified as responsible for the actual rate constant value. Apart from an intrinsic kinetic constant, they are the inverse of compartment volume, the transfer surface area, the fraction of mass able to be transferred, and the fraction of mass that effectively can be transferred. In clinical practice some of these factors might change throughout time (because of chronophysiological rhythms or drug availability at the action sites) and consequently, an inconstant extra-plasma/plasma drug concentration ratio could be obtained. In conclusion, therapeutic response prediction for a treatment does not upon plasma drug concentration monitoring. Equivalence in plasma drug exposure should not mean therapeutic equivalence, because differences in the rate and in the extent between test and reference products may induce a change in the action site/plasma drug concentration ratio.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Contain between 1 and 3 bullet points highlighting the customization rather than the steps of the procedure. An analytical methodology was adjusted and validated for the analysis of 15 selected pesticides currently employed in extensive agriculture. The main application of this methodology is studying the pesticides degradation behavior using biobeds as a friendly environmental tool for the treatment of wastewaters generated in fields. The scope of the method was selected based on the most used pesticides in soybean crops in Uruguay. The novelty of this work is the inclusion of neutral and acidic herbicides such as 2,4-D, clethodim, dicamba, together with fungicides and insecticides which are usually included in Multi Residue Methods. An acetonitrile extraction methodology without a clean-up step yielded acceptable results for all the analytes. The instrumental analysis was performed using HPLC-MS/MS. The selected methodology was validated according to the SANTE guidelines. The recoveries were between 65 and 130% with RSD &lt; 20%. The instrumental LOQs were fixed at 1 &micro;g/L for all the compounds except for clethodim, and the method LOQs were 1 mg/kg in biomixture dry basis. These LOQs values are acceptable for biodegradation studies in biobeds.</p>

The scope of the method for organophosphorus, organochlorine, and pyrethroid insecticides is the same as that of official methods from various pharmacopeias. After lanolin dispersion on C18 bonded silica, pesticides are eluted with acetonitrile saturated with n-hexane. Recoveries ranged from 83 to 118% with RSD values of &lt;20% for most pesticides listed, in compliance with the requirements of European and U.S. pharmacopeias.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The main objective of present study was to investigate the influence of geographical region on the flavour compounds of various cold pressed lemon oils i.e. Argentinean, Ivory Cost, Italian, Spanish and Uruguayan. Among the flavor compounds, the major volatile flavour compounds from different chemical classes namely monoterpene hydrocarbons (i.e. limonene, sabinene plus &beta;-pinene, &gamma;-terpinene, myrcene, &alpha;-pinene and &alpha;-terpinolene), esters (i.e. neryl acetate and geranyl acetate), alcohol (i.e. &alpha;-Terpineol) and aldehyde compounds (i.e. geranial and neral) were composed of &gt; 90% of total volatile flavor compounds of target cold pressed lemon oils. Uruguayan essential oil had the least concentration level of all major classes of flavor compounds except for alcohol compounds; while the highest content of all chemical classes of flavor compounds identified in this study. The principle component analysis (PCA) allowed us to discriminate various cold pressed lemon oil based on their origin resource thereby classify their sensorial attributes.]]></dcterms:abstract>
