    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A mixed Mg2+/Al3+ oxide featuring an incipient spinel phase was employed in the catalytic decomposition of a range of phosphate triesters, including the neurotoxic biocide chlorpyrifos methyl O-analog, with estimated catalytic effects up to 104-fold. The target reaction, namely, the transesterification with 1-propanol, was conveniently chosen as a means to convert toxic organophosphorus substrates into trialkyl phosphates structurally related to a family of flame retardants. Catalytic efficiency depends upon the stereo-electronic properties of the substrate, with both leaving group ability and geometric factors displaying pivotal effects on the rate constants. To evaluate the adsorption of 1-propanol/propoxide and the phosphotriester methyl paraoxon over the MgAl2O4(100) surface, density functional theory calculations with periodic boundary conditions were performed, which showed that the most probable reactants&rsquo; conformation prior to the reaction is such that propoxide is bound to a Mg2+ center with a juxtapositioned methyl paraoxon molecule at a close, neighboring Al3+ site.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is an international disarmament treaty that prohibits the development, stockpiling and use of chemical weapons. This treaty has 193 States Parties (nations for which the treaty is binding) and entered into force in 1997. The CWC contains schedules of chemicals that have been associated with chemical warfare programmes. These scheduled chemicals must be declared by the States that possess them and are subject to verification by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW, the implementing body of the CWC). Isotopically labelled and stereoisomeric variants of the scheduled chemicals have presented ambiguities for interpretation of the requirements of treaty implementation, and advice was sought from the OPCW&rsquo;s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) in 2016. The SAB provided advice useful to resolving these ambiguities, and the technical information compiled and reviewed by the SAB is described herein. The advice provided should benefit scientists and diplomats from the CWC&rsquo;s State Parties to help ensure a consistent approach to their declarations of scheduled chemicals. In this report, isotopically labelled and stereoisomeric variants of CWC-scheduled chemicals are reviewed, and the impact of the SAB advice in influencing a change to national licensing in one of the State Parties is discussed. This outcome, an update to national licensing governing compliance to an international treaty, serves as an example of the effectiveness of science diplomacy within an international disarmament treaty.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Objective The current study aimed to assess Uruguayan consumers&rsquo; accounts of their own need to change their dietary patterns, their intended changes and the barriers related to doing so, and to compare the intentions and barriers with the recommendations of the national dietary guidelines. Design An online survey with 2381 Uruguayan employed adults, aged between 18 and 65 years, 65 % females, was conducted. Participants had to answer two open-ended questions related to changes they could make in the foods they eat and/or the way in which they eat to improve the quality of their diet and the reasons why they had not implemented those changes yet. Content analysis using inductive coding by two researchers was used to analyse the responses. Results Consumers mainly intended to change consumption of types of foods, particularly eating more fruits, vegetables and legumes and consuming less flour, but also intended to alter their eating patterns. Lack of time and the fact that healthy foods are perceived as being more expensive than unhealthy foods were major barriers to behaviour change. Some of the recommendations of the dietary guidelines, particularly those related to enjoying cooking and meals and engaging in it as a social activity, were not represented in consumer accounts. Conclusions Accompanying policies to the dietary guidelines need to underline the importance of changes in dietary patterns, including greater enjoyment and sharing food preparation and meals in the company with others, address misconceptions about flour, and provide concrete, consumer-derived recommendations on how to enact the guidelines.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. It is estimated that 6 million people are infected in Latin America. Current treatment is not effective due to the severe side effects and the limited efficacy towards the chronic phase of the disease. Considering the growing need for specific anti-Trypanosoma cruzi drugs, organometallic Pt and Pd based compounds were previously synthesized. Although the Pt-based compound effects on T. cruzi death have been reported, no mechanism of action has been proposed for the Pd-based analogous compound. In this work, we determined excellent to very good values of IC50 and SI. To analyze the compound mode of action, we measured Pd uptake and its association to the macromolecules of the parasite by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. We found a poor uptake, which reaches only 16% after 24 h of incubation using 10&times; IC50, being the scarce incorporated metal preferentially associated to DNA. However, this compound has a trypanocidal effect, leading to morphological changes such as shortening of the parasite cell body and inducing necrosis after 24 h of treatment. Furthermore, this compound impairs the parasite development in the host both at the trypomastigote infection process and the intracellular amastigotes replication. In conclusion, our findings support that Pd-dppf-mpo compound constitutes a promising anti-T. cruzi compound effective against the chronic phase of the disease.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Sodium reduction strategies that fully or partially compensate for the effect of reducing sodium on the sensoy profile of foods have been proposed as a cost‐effective alternative to decrease dietary sodium intake at the population level. The present work aimed at exploring the effect of partially replacing NaCl with KCl on the sensory characteristics and hedonic perception of toast bread. Equivalent salty concentration of NaCl : KCl blends were estimated relative to different NaCl concentrations, using paired comparisons with a panel of trained assessors. The influence of partially replacing NaCl by KCl on the dynamic sensory profile of toast breads was assessed using the Temporal Check‐all‐that‐apply approach with a trained panel. Finally, a consumer study was carried out to evaluate consumers' sensory and hedonic perception of toast breads produced by partially replacing 30% NaCl with KCl. Results from the present work suggest that KCl can be deemed effective at compensating for saltiness intensity in sodium reduced toast breads. Partial replacement of 30% NaCl with KCl did not significantly affect the sensory characteristics of toast breads. However, NaCl replacement equal or higher than 40% caused an increase in bitterness, off‐flavor, and metallic flavor. Heterogeneity in consumer hedonic reaction toward partial replacement of NaCl with KCl was observed, but mainly associated to differences in texture perception.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Tissue transglutaminase is a ubiquitous and multifunctional protein that contributes to several processes such as apoptosis/survival, efferocytosis, inflammation and tissue repairing under physiological and pathological conditions. Several activities can be associated with well-established functional domains; in addition, four RNA alternative splice variants have been described, characterized by sequence divergences and residues deletion at the C-terminal domains. Tissue transglutaminase is recognized as the central player in the physiopathology of coeliac disease (CD) mainly through calcium-dependent enzymatic activities. It can be hypothesized that differential regulation of tissue transglutaminase splice variants expression in persons with CD contributes to pathology by altering the protein functionality. We characterized the expression pattern of RNA alternative splice variants by RT-PCR in peripheral cells from patients with CD under free gluten diet adhesion; we considered inflammatory parameters and specific antibodies as markers of the stage of disease. We found significant higher expression of both the full length and the shortest C-truncated splice variants in leucocytes from patients with CD in comparison with healthy individuals. As tissue transglutaminase expression and canonical enzymatic activity are linked to inflammation, we studied the RNA expression of inflammatory cytokines in peripheral leucocytes of persons with CD in relation with splice variants expression; interestingly, we found that recently diagnosed patients showed significant correlation between both the full length and the shortest alternative spliced variants with IL-1 expression. Our results points that regulation of alternative splicing of tissue transglutaminase could account for the complex physiopathology of CD.]]></dcterms:abstract>
