    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Consumer‐based methods for sensory product characterization continue to gain popularity. Considering that past research is mostly limited to cases where samples are sensorially simple or markedly different, the aim of this study was to compare descriptive analysis (DA) by trained assessors with product characterizations from consumers using rate‐all‐that‐apply (RATA) questions using samples that can be regarded as quite similar or quite complex. The results from three studies showed that sample differentiation was higher in DA than RATA and that information about sample similarities and differences tended to be dissimilar. The exception was Study 1 where samples were least complex. The discrepancy between the two types of panels was least evident for appearance and color attributes and basic tastes (sweet, sour, and salty), and in these instances, the correlation between attribute intensities was clearly linear (R&sup2; = 0.46). The discrepancy was highest for complex sensory terms and terms relating to specific odors/flavors. While past research suggests that it may be possible to improve the agreement between the two methods by providing consumers with short training (samples, terms, and rating scale), practitioners should consider that training of consumers may reduce the ecological validity of their responses. Practical applications Characterization of the properties of products is a cornerstone activity for sensory professionals, and to achieve this task, several methods are available. This study contributes insight regarding the choice of descriptive analysis (DA) with trained assessors or rate‐all‐that‐apply (RATA) questions with consumers. If the products are not sensorially complex, then product characterization by consumers provide the same insights as DA. However, this study shows that when samples are sensorially complex and/or similar, RATA is less discriminative than DA and provides information about sample similarities and differences that is not the same as that generated by DA.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Reducing the added sugar content of sugar‐sweetened beverages is one of the most cost‐effective strategies to achieve short‐term changes in added sugar intake. The present study aimed at evaluating children and adults' sensory and hedonic perception of added sugar reduction in grape nectar. For this purpose, two studies were carried out. In the first study, five sequential difference thresholds for added sugar in grape nectar were determined with school‐aged children and adults using paired comparisons. In the second study 105 children (6&ndash;12 years old) and 100 adults evaluated six samples with different added sugar content. They were asked to rate their overall liking and to answer a check‐all‐that‐apply question. Results confirmed the feasibility of reducing the added sugar concentration of grape nectar without affecting the sensory and hedonic perception of both children and adults. Children were less able to detect changes in the sensory characteristics of the added sugar reduced nectar samples than adults but showed higher hedonic sensitivity to added sugar reduction. Large heterogeneity in hedonic reaction toward added sugar‐reduced nectar samples was found in both age groups.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Chemical bioprospecting is an important tool for generating knowledge regarding local human-threatened floras and for conservation management. For Baccharis L. (Asteraceae), several volatile components have been reported for Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile as a result of bioprospection, but not for Uruguayan flora, which is composed of more than 50 native species. In this work, through collection of aerial parts of different species and volatile simultaneous-distillation extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses, twelve native species of Baccharis were studied (B. articulata, B. cultrata, B. genistifolia, B. gibertii, B. gnaphalioides, B. ochracea, B. phyteumoides, B. punctulata, B. crispa, B. dracunculifolia, B. linearifolia subsp. linearifolia, and B. spicata). A detailed analysis of the male and female volatile composition was conducted for the last four species. The profiles of B. cultrata, B. genistifolia, B. gibertii, and B. gnaphalioides are reported for the first time. Because half of the species analyzed in this work are in Uruguay and are threatened or potentially threatened by human economic activities, the importance of their conservation as natural, sustainable resources is highlighted</p>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[SnS2 has adequate properties for photovoltaic applications in solar cells. For this purpose, we studied the influence of the capping agents pyridine and aniline in the nanoparticles hydrothermal syntheses. These capping agents are suitable for use in hybrid organic- inorganic solar cells. Different ratios of these agents with respect to the metal precursor were tested. Hexagonal and disc-type nanoparticles were obtained. Lower concentrations of capping agent increased the proportion of hexagons, while diminishing their size. The obtained products are adequate in size, dispersion of size, and stabile in suspension in chloroform to use them in hybrid solar cells. Moreover, the use ofpyridine allowed for more stable suspensions, and therefore better results for this application.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Astringency is one of the differential characteristics of Tannat wine, the emblematic wine of the Uruguayan wine‐making industry. The aim of this study was twofold: First, to compare wine astringency characterization of experts and trained assessors, and second, to identify which astringency characteristics influence experts' perception of astringency quality. Six commercial Uruguayan Tannat wines were evaluated in triplicate by a trained assessors panel (n&thinsp;=&thinsp;9). Assessors rated the global astringency intensity using a time‐intensity task, and described astringency subqualities using a check‐all‐that‐apply (CATA) question composed of 16 terms. Samples were also assessed by 30 experts who rated astringency intensity and quality using 9‐point structured scales. In addition, experts described astringency subqualities of samples and of their ideal high‐quality Tannat wine using a CATA question. Significant differences among samples were found in astringency intensity for both panels and expert's perceived quality. Agreement between trained assessors and experts in astringency intensity evaluations was observed, but differences in their description of astringency subqualities were found. Astringency quality as perceived by experts was not related only to astringency global intensity; astringency subqualities complex and velvety were the main drivers of astringency quality, while puckery, sand paper, and irritant significantly lowered quality scores.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) and Reptation Monte Carlo (RMC) methods, have been applied to study some properties of the NaK molecule. Hartree-Fock (HF), Density Functional (DFT) and single and double configuration interaction (SDCI) wavefunctions with a valence quadruple zeta atomic natural orbital (VQZ/ANO) basis set were used as trial wavefunctions. Values for the potential energy curve, dissociation energy and dipole moment were calculated for all methods and compared with experimental results and previous theoretical derivations. Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations were shown to be useful methods to recover correlation in NaK, essential to obtain a reasonable description of the molecule. The equilibrium distance&mdash;interpolated from the potential energy curves&mdash;yield a value of 3.5 &Aring;, in agreement with the experimental value. The dissociation energy, however, is not as good. In this case, a conventional CCSD(T) calculation with an extended aug-pc-4 basis set gives a much better agreement to experiment. On the contrary, the CCSD(T), other MO and DFT methods are not able to reproduce correctly the large dipole moment of this molecule. Even DMC methods with a simple HF trial wavefunction are able to give a better agreement to experiment. RMC methods are even better, and the value obtained with a B3LYP trial wavefunction is very close to the experimental one.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Doping leading to low electrical resistivity in electrodeposited thin films of Cu2O is a straightforward requirement for the construction of efficient electronic and energy devices. Here, Bi (7&thinsp;at. %) doped Cu2O layers were deposited electrochemically onto Si(100) single-crystal substrates from aqueous solutions containing bismuth nitrate and cupric sulfate. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that Bi ions in a Cu2O lattice have an oxidation valence of 3+ and glancing angle X-ray diffraction measurements indicated no presence of secondary phases. The reduction in the electrical resistivity from undoped to Bi-doped Cu2O is of 4 and 2 orders of magnitude for electrical measurements at 230 and 300&thinsp;K, respectively. From variations in the lattice parameter and the refractive index, the electrical resistivity decrease is addressed to an increase in the density of Cu vacancies. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations supported the experimental findings. The DFT results showed that in a 6% Bi doped Cu2O cell, the formation of Cu vacancies is more favorable than in an undoped Cu2O one. Moreover, from DFT data was observed that there is an increase (decrease) of the Cu2O band gap (activation energy) for 6% Bi doping, which is consistent with the experimental results.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Diseases caused by several (sub)species of parasites from the genus Trypanosoma are a major concern for public and animal health. Trypanosomes have a digenetic life cycle that involves an insect host that acts as the vector for transmission to different mammals, some of which are natural reservoirs. The zoonotic nature of the disease together with the capacity of the parasites to evade the host immune response or become dormant hampers pathogen eradication and immunoprophylactic control. A handful of drugs are available for the treatment, although none of them has been specifically designed toward these pathogens. The drugs are efficacious when applied at very early stages of the infections, but display high toxicity, require a long or assisted administration, present a limited efficacy against late stages of the diseases and are prone to develop resistance. Here we review the state-of-the-art for the drugs used to treat trypanosomiasis that causes African sleeping sickness and Chagas&rsquo; disease in humans. The state-of-the-art on drug uptake, mode of action, and resistance is here reviewed. The prospects for developing new molecules that circumvent the current challenges for treating trypanosomiasis are also discussed.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The occurrence of ripples in an eight‐atom vacancy graphene system was analyzed through first principles calculations based on density functional theory. The study focuses on the conditions that should be considered in order that ripples could occur in the single layer defected graphene. The vacancies concentration, especially the pentagonal figures formed after relaxation of the vacant system, and the distances between neighbor pentagons, are found to be key aspects for rippling occurrence, with no charge distribution consequence. Two different configurations of rippling have been found where the position of the pentagonal figures is discussed as the driving force for any of them to occur.]]></dcterms:abstract>
