<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In herbivorous insects, the preference–performance hypothesis predicts that females will choose to oviposit on plants that maximize offspring development. Although there is evidence to support this hypothesis, several studies have shown that it does not always apply. Among the factors that may modulate the preference–performance relationship, diet breadth is a significant one, although no correlation has been found for monophagous insects. More case studies are needed, as more restricted diets are expected to require better discrimination ability. In this study, we explored the preference–performance linkage in a monophagous sawfly, Tequus schrottkyi (Konow) (Hymenoptera: Pergidae), which feeds as larva on the wild potato Solanum commersonii Dunal (Solanaceae). We used the cultivated potato, Solanum tuberosum L., as an alternative host plant for our experiments. Performance was evaluated from newly emerged larvae until adult emergence, raising individual larvae on potted plants or excised leaves. Female oviposition preference was studied in two‐choice bioassays, in which individual females were offered whole plants of S. commersonii and S. tuberosum. The nutritional quality of the plants was assessed by measuring protein, non‐structural carbohydrate, and water contents. The offspring performed better on their host plant, S. commersonii, resulting in more larvae completing their development to the adult stage. Moreover, the larvae developed faster and their cocoon weighed more when they were raised on their host plant. The females oviposited almost exclusively on S. commersonii, regardless of their previous food plant. The protein and non‐structural carbohydrate contents did not differ between the plants, whereas water content was higher in the non‐preferred S. tuberosum. The differences in water content and in secondary metabolites, which have been analyzed in a previous study, may play a role in female preference and offspring performance. The results are discussed within the framework of the preference–performance hypothesis and the chemical ecology of insect–plant interactions.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Hanseniaspora is the main genus of the apiculate yeast group that represents about 70% of the grape-associated microflora. Hanseniaspora vineae is emerging as a promising species for quality wine production compared to other non-Saccharomyces Wines produced by H. vineae with Saccharomyces cerevisiae consistently exhibit more intense fruity flavours and complexity than wines produced by S. cerevisiae alone. In this work, genome sequencing, assembling and phylogenetic analysis of two strains of H. vineae shows that it is a member of the Saccharomyces complex and it diverged before the Whole Genome Duplication (WGD) event from this clade. Specific flavour gene duplications and absences were identified in the H. vineae genome, as compared to 14 fully sequenced industrial S. cerevisiae genomes. The increased formation of 2-phenylethyl acetate and phenylpropanoids such as 2-phenylethyl and benzyl alcohols might be explained due to gene duplications of H. vineae aromatic amino acid aminotransferases (ARO8, ARO9) and phenylpyruvate decarboxylases (ARO10).Transcriptome and aroma profiles under fermentation conditions confirmed these genes were highly expressed at the beginning of stationary phase coupled to the production of their related compounds. The extremely high level of acetate esters produced by H. vineae compared to S. cerevisiae is consistent with the identification of six novel proteins with alcohol acetyltransferase (AATase) domains. The absence of the branched-chain-amino-acid transaminases (BAT2) and acyl-CoA/ethanol O-acyltransferases (EEB1) genes, correlates with H. vineae reduced production of branched-chain higher alcohols, fatty acids and ethyl esters, respectively. Our study provides sustenance to understanding and potentially utilizing genes that determine fermentation aromas.Importance The huge diversity of non-Saccharomyces yeasts in grapes is dominated by the apiculate genus Hanseniaspora Two native strains of H. vineae applied to winemaking due to their high oenological potential in aroma and fermentation performance, were selected to obtain high quality genomes. Here, we present a phylogenetic analysis, and the complete transcriptome and aroma metabolome of H. vineae during three fermentation steps. This species produced significantly richer flavour compound diversity compared to Saccharomyces, such as benzenoids, phenylpropanoids, and acetate derived compounds. The identification of six proteins, different from S. cerevisiae ATF, with diverse acetyl transferase domains in H. vineae offers a relevant source of native genetic variants for this enzymatic activity. The discovery of benzenoid synthesis capacity in H. vineae provides a new eukaryotic model to dilucidate an alternative pathway to that catalysed by plants' phenylalanine lyases.]]></dcterms:abstract>

The replacement of milk by hydrosoluble extract and soybean protein concentrate presented itself as an alternative to gelato production with unique characteristics, especially in terms of protein, solubility, viscosity, melting point, overrun and acceptability. The addition of up to 5 % (m/V) protein concentrate, 14 % (by volume) soybean hydrosoluble extract, and 15 % (by mass) vegetable fat to gelato formulations resulted in better structural characteristics, with viscosity ranging from 0.45–0.70 Pa∙s at 10 °C, a non-Newtonian behaviour and protein stability (total protein content 8.44 % and solubility 41 %). Soybean gelato structural analysis using X-ray diffraction revealed 15° and 35° diffraction angles at 2Θ, characterizing the crystalline part of the product. The thermal analyses showed four bands of mass loss in the temperature range of 40–600 °C, characterizing loss of moisture, decomposition of the soy protein and the fat/emulsifier of the formulations. Thus, the soybean gelato is an innovative product, lactose and milk protein-free with outstanding characteristics for the general public, mainly, for the populations with intolerance to such components.]]></dcterms:abstract>

The specific surface area and the microporous volume of the Al-PILC, 235 m2 g-1 and 0.096 cm3 g-1, respectively, were much higher than those of the clay. The phosphate adsorption capacity of the Al-PILC was higher than those of the clay. The phosphate adsorption kinetic followed the pseudo-first-order model for both, the clay and the Al-PILC, and the phosphate adsorption isotherm for the Al-PILC fit the Freundlich model.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Divanillin molecules crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pba2 (No. 32), with two molecules per unit cell (Z′ = 1 \over 2). Each divanillin molecule, with twofold symmetry, is linked through strong alcohol–aldehyde hydrogen bonds to four equivalent molecules, defining a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding network, with rings made up of six divanillin units (a diamond-like arrangement). Each molecule is also connected through π–π interactions to a translation-equivalent molecule along c. Four consecutive molecules stacked along [001] belong to four different three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding networks defining a quadruple array of interpenetrating networks. This complex hydrogen-bonding array is proposed as an explanation for the aging process experienced by divanillin powders.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Synthetic dyes in watercourses resulting from industrial effluent discharges cause serious ecological impacts, besides carcinogenic and mutagenic effects on human health. Thus, it is important to develop effective methods to remove the dyes from industrial wastewaters, and also to carry out adequate toxicity studies to establish their safety. Azo dyes are the main class of industrial dyes and important environmental contaminants. We have examined the decolorization of two azo dyes (Acid Red 88 and Acid Black 172) by a native Trametes villosa laccase immobilized on thiolsulfinate-agarose as well as the effect of different redox mediators in the reactions. The method was effective for the decolorization of both dyes. The immobilization method did not affect the capacity of the biocatalyst for dye degradation. Therefore, the insoluble enzyme removed 97% of the color of AR88 and 92% of AB172 in 24 hours at 22 °C in the presence of the selected redox mediators, vanillin (0.1 mM) and violuric acid (1.0 mM), respectively. In addition, the immobilized enzyme kept 78% of its initial capacity for decolorization of AR88 after three cycles of use. The ecotoxicological evaluation of the solutions showed a great variation depending on the biological systems used. In the phytotoxicity test, the decolorization products were not toxic to plants, whereas in Daphnia magna and Microtox® bioassays an acute residual toxicity was found. The last outcome shows the importance of using a battery of bioassays to determine the remaining ecotoxicity of the treated effluents before their discharge into the aquatic environment.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In the present work, we considered the effect of Nb and charged vacancies on the properties of magnesium hydride. We performed spin-polarized ab initio calculations substituting an Mg atom by an Nb impurity. Then, some charged vacancies were included in the MgH2 + Nb system (VH, VMg, or VMg–H). In each case, three possible charge states were considered (+1, 0, or −1). We computed cohesion and formation energies, band gap, and magnetic moment. We also calculated the transition level energy value and the density of states. Nb states are located in the gap, and a magnetic moment is induced. In the case of the system with charged vacancies, we found that VH+ and VH0 are the more probable vacancies formed, and the states near the Fermi level (EF) are filled, thus getting an important reduction in the band gap.]]></dcterms:abstract>

The present work is focused on the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles for the adsorption of cysteine-proteolytic enzymes extracted from Bromelia antiacantha Bertol (Bromeliaceae) fruit. The results show that enzyme adsorption is highly dependent on the temperature and pH. The biocatalyst activity increased up to 40 %, once immobilized onto the magnetic nanoparticles. In addition, they can be recovered using a magnet allowing them to be reused up to 5 cycles with a marginal loss (5 %) of the initial activity.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Peptidomimetic and anti-immunocomplex peptides, which can be readily isolated from a phage-display library, have shown great potential for small-molecule immunoassay development because they typically improve the sensitivity and avoid the use of chemical haptens as coatings or tracer antigens. However, phage-borne peptides are unconventional immunoassay reagents, which greatly limits their use in commercial applications, and require secondary reagents for detection. In order to overcome these limitations, we used C2-15, a peptidomimetic of imidaclothiz, as a model peptide fused to emerald-green fluorescent protein (EmGFP) at the N-terminus (C2-15-EmGFP) and C-terminus (EmGFP-C2-15) to generate novel fluorescent-peptide tracers. Both recombinant fluorophores reacted with similar affinity to the anti-imidaclothiz monoclonal antibody 1E7, but because of its higher expression, C2-15-EmGFP was chosen to develop a competitive magnetic-separation fluorescence immunoassay (MSFIA). After a competitive step with the analyte, the C2-15-EmGFP–antibody complex bound to the magnetic beads was separated with a magnet, and because of the fast dissociation of the peptide–antibody interaction, the fluorescence signal was detected following the spontaneous dissociation of the complex in fresh buffer. The concentration of imidaclothiz causing the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) was 11.00 ng mL–1, and the MSFIA performed with excellent recovery and had a good correlation with high-performance liquid chromatography in different matrices.]]></dcterms:abstract>
