    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Pullulanase was provided with up to nine "de novo" thiol groups through a two-step procedure without substantially affecting its enzymatic activity. The chemically modified enzyme was immobilized via disulfide bond formation on two kinds of thiol-reactive gels(pyridyldisulfide- and thiolsulfonate-substituted agarose). Thiolation of pullulanase improved both the immobilization yield and the apparent specific activity of the derivatives.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Despite adverse conditions in Antarctica for life, organic materials can be successfully colonized by extremophilic microorganisms. This work describes the isolation of filamentous fungi from terrestrial and maritime habitats of King George Island, Antarctica, and the screening of their ability to produce antimicrobial compounds. A total of 44 samples were collected during the Antarctic expeditions from soil, sediments, terrestrial and marine waters and pieces of wood that had been brought into Antarctica. One hundred thirty-seven psychrotrophic fungi were isolated. Thirty-three strains selected from different samples and with different morphological characteristics were used in molecular identification and antimicrobial activity assays. The ability of all isolations to inhibit growth of different bacteria in vitro was tested using the agar plug diffusion method. Most of the fungi identified were Ascomycota with only a few Zygomycota and no Basidiomycota isolated. Twenty-six cultures corresponded to known species. Penicillium was the most represented genus of identified fungal isolations (24 %) followed by species of Cadophora, Mortierella, Pseudogymnoascus and Neurospora. This is the first report of the presence of Aspergillus pseudodeflectus in this region. Of the isolates under study, eighteen were able to inhibit growth of at least one of the bacterial strains used.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The scope of this study included the preparation of silver nanoforms with high antimicrobial efficacy, low cost, and ease of application. The term 'silver nanoforms' refers to silver located on the amorphous or crystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2). Silver nanoforms may be used as an alternative to antibiotics in killing bacteria. Pure and silver-incorporated titanium (used as a carrier) was prepared using the sol-gel-modified method. Physical and chemical properties of the samples were described, and the antibacterial activity was indicated using the following strains of bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae (ESKAPE pathogens), and Escherichia coli. The results have shown that the antibacterial activity of silver nanoforms with amorphous TiO2 is much better than that in the samples based on anatase (crystalline TiO2). The sensitivity of the tested bacteria to silver nanoforms depends on physical and chemical properties of the nanoforms and individual characteristics of the bacteria. For the first time, significant participation of amorphous TiO2 in antibacterial compounds has been described through this study.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[An increasing number of reports worldwide stated a variety of currently used pesticides (CUPs) and legacy contaminants occurring in tissues of freshwater fish. Although few information is available on the effects of these pesticides at ecological level particularly at sub-lethal doses and their interactions in a continuous multiple exposure scenario, fish species became a promising bioindicator to understand the environmental fate and dynamic of pesticides in freshwater. This review highlights latest findings concerning bioaccumulation, biotransformation and effects of pesticides on fish health. Metabolomic and proteomic studies should help to understand consequences of pesticide exposure to fish. Finally, human food safety perspectives are also discussed.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The best demonstration of the ruggedness of a method is monitoring its performance on an ongoing basis as part of the analytical quality control applied in the laboratory. However, an initial demonstration of the ruggedness is often performed as one aspect of the method validation, to give confidence that the method should perform well under normal variations in conditions in routine application. This initial ruggedness testing is typically performed using either multiple replicate analyses or application of design of experiments (DoEs) which minimizes the number of analyses, time and effort required to detect influences on the measurement results. Two DoEs were applied for ruggedness testing for a modified QuEChERS multiresidue method for the detection of pesticide residues in potato by GC&ndash;MS/MS. Seven experimental factors were studied using an eight-run Plackett&ndash;Burman design replicated three times and an augmented definitive screening design with 34 runs. The relative effectiveness of the two approaches is discussed, in terms of their statistical significance, their cost-effectiveness and the richness of information they provide on the effects of the parameters investigated and the actual robustness of the method being tested.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Vine leaves are consumed in many countries but little attention is paid to the residues left on them after the application of pesticides that help prevent pests and protect the grapes, the economically important target. Therefore, it is of outmost importance to study the dissipation of the pesticides applied to this crop to protect the consumers that also eat vine leaves. Dissipation kinetics of chlorpyrifos, chlorpyrifos-methyl, diazinon and dimethoate residues were studied in vine leaves grown under sunny conditions in Syria, using an ethyl acetate based sample preparation followed by GC-MS/MS determination. The dissipation rate for all doses applied followed first-order kinetics, with half-lives in grape leaves in the range of 2.9 &ndash; 3.9 days. At the recommended application dose, a withholding period of 8.9-37.1 days before consumption should be applied to meet current MRLs and minimise risks to consumers. The effectiveness in the reduction of pesticide loads in vine leaves through washing with either cold or hot water was dependant on the physicochemical properties of the studied pesticides. Hot water washing was very effective for dimethoate, a polar and water-soluble pesticide, with an effective reduction of 92% of the residue level; but no significant effect was observed for chlorpyrifos, the most apolar compound in this study.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The dissipation of field-applied difenoconazole, imidacloprid, pyraclostrobin and spinosad on Clementine mandarins (Citrus clementina Hort. ex Tan.) under controlled conditions throughout the citrus production chain was assessed. At harvest, 42 days after application, the dissipation of these pesticides were 80, 92, and 48% for difenoconazole, imidacloprid, pyraclostrobin, respectively, and spinosad was below the level of detectability. At day 28 after application, spinosad was no longer detected. The model equations that best describe the dissipation curves of these pesticides on Clementine mandarins showed different patterns. Their half-life on Clementine, calculated by the best-fitted experimental data, were 19.2 day (1st-order model) for difenoconazole, 4.1 day (Root Factor (RF) 1st-order model) for imidacloprid, 39.8 day (2nd-order model) for pyraclostrobin and 5.8 day (1st-order model) for spinosad. These results are the first record of pyraclostrobin persistence on mandarins, showing a longer half-life in this matrix than those reported for any other fruit. The treated fruit were harvested and submitted to the usual postharvest treatments: first, a hypochlorite drenching was performed; as a second step, imazalil and wax were applied, and then the mandarins were stored at 4 &deg;C. After 32 days, cold storage caused no significant effects on the residue levels of the four pesticides compared with those determined on freshly harvested mandarins. All residues were below their Codex and European Union (EU) maximum residue limit (MRL) for mandarin since the spray application day.]]></dcterms:abstract>
