<dcterms:abstract>Issatchenkia terricola 0621 is a non-Saccharomyces yeast strain isolated from Tannat grapes from Uruguayan vineyards; it stands out for its ability to produce high levels of β-glucosidase activity, which contributes to the aromatic complexity of wines. To delve into the potential oenological applications of this strain, its high-quality genome was obtained and explored, allowing the main central carbon and nitrogen metabolic pathways to be reconstructed. I. terricola is able to utilise glycerol as the sole carbon source in a way that has not previously been described for yeasts. The genes of the fermentome and those involved in stress resistance during winemaking were also identified, and differences were found when compared to S. cerevisiae, which may explain why I. terricola is unable to complete fermentation. The pathways responsible for natural aroma synthesis were also reconstructed, and the production of aromatic acids, alcohols, esters, acetates and lactones was verified experimentally. Finally, sequences encoding for β-glucosidases, in addition to the previously characterised one, were identified in the genome. The work presented here lays the groundwork for experimental research focused on the dissection of the metabolism of a native non-Saccharomyces strain and its application for oenological and biotechnological purposes.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Single-phase oxygen stoichiometric LaMnO3 and doped La0.8A0.2MnO3 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) perovskites have been prepared by a simple one-step auto-combustion method. Cation-deficient LaMnO3+ and La0.8A0.2MnO3+ were obtained by calcination of the former samples in air at 750 C. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction, temperature-programmed oxygen desorption, and N2 physisorption in order to apply them as catalysts in the complete catalytic oxidation of acetone as a model volatile organic compound. The studied phases show the expected orthorhombic and rhombohedral perovskite crystal structures. Catalytic experiments performed with all the samples show measurable activity already at 100 C. At 200 C, doped La0.8A0.2MnO3 samples show higher activity than undoped LaMnO3, with increasing conversion with larger A-cation size. Calcined samples also show higher activity than as-prepared ones making La0.8Ba0.2MnO3+ the best catalyst at this temperature. All doped samples show >95% acetone conversion at T 250 C with a weak dependence on the sample processing or A cation doping. The collected evidence confirms that the most important factors for the catalytic activity of these oxides are the Mn4+/Mn3+ molar ratio on the surface of the samples and the cation-deficiency of the bulk perovskite structure. In addition, increasing the symmetry of the bulk crystal structure appears to have an additional favourable effect. Despite the observation of the presence of surface carbonates, we show that it is possible to use the as-prepared samples without further thermal treatment with good results in the oxidation of acetone.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to digital food marketing. However, research on adolescents’ recall, awareness, and opinions of this type of marketing is still scarce. Accordingly, the present study aimed to conduct an in-depth examination of adolescents’ experiences with digital food marketing. A convenience sample of 209 adolescents was recruited at two private educational institutions and a public health facility in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. Semi-structured group interviews were conducted, recorded in audio and transcribed. The transcripts were analyzed using content analysis based on a deductive-inductive approach. Results showed that participants were highly exposed to digital food marketing, as they all remembered having seen advertisements, with those of fast-food restaurants and food-ordering apps being the most frequently mentioned. According to the adolescents’ accounts, images, colors, music, oversized portions, product novelty, price promotions and celebrities were the most memorable aspects of food advertisements. Participants recognized the effect of advertisements on product awareness and wanting, and, to a lesser extent, on actual purchase and consumption behavior. Factors that were thought to mediate the impact of digital marketing on food choice were also identified. In the final part of the interviews, participants proposed strategies to reduce the effect of digital marketing on their food choices, which included both regulatory approaches to reduce exposure to digital marketing of unhealthy foods and behavior change communication. Together, the current findings provide insights for the development of multifaceted strategies to reduce the effects of digital food marketing on the eating habits of adolescents.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Purpose 3D printing (3DP) makes it possible to obtain systems that are not achievable with current conventional methods, one of them, sustained release floating systems. Floating systems using ricobendazole (RBZ) as a model drug and a combination of polymers were designed and obtained by melt solidification printing technique (MESO-PP). Methods Four different MESO-PP inks were formulated based on combinations of the polymers Gelucire 43/01 and Gelucire 50/13 in different ratios. For each of the formulated inks, physicochemical characterization was performed by thermal analysis (thermogravimetric analysis [TGA] and differential scanning calorimetry [DSC]), fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Pharmaceutical characterization was performed by in vitro assays to determine pharmaceutically relevant parameters. These parameters were calculated by applying mathematical models developed to evaluate in vitro drug release profiles. On the other hand, a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model was developed to predict the in vivo performance of RBZ loaded in the different inks by determining the Cmax, and the AUC 0-∞. Results By increasing the proportion of Gelucire 50/13 co-surfactant in the mixtures (the proportion in Ink 1 was 33%, while the proportion in Ink 4 was 80%), the dissolution capacity of RBZ increases substantially, decreasing flotation times. Conclusion MESO-PP produced ink 1 (50% Gelucire 43/01, 25% Gelucire 50/13 and 25% RBZ), which has a zero-order release (RR = 0.180%/min) and the longest flotation time (545 ± 23 min), and in turn would produce a significant increase in oral absorption of the drug, with an AUC 0-∞ 2.16-fold higher than that obtained in animals treated with RBZ loaded in conventional tablets.</dcterms:abstract>

Participants in an online survey read a text about vertical farming. They used highlighter functions to mark parts of the text they “liked” and “disliked”. Four countries were included in the research—United Kingdom, United States, Singapore, and China (637–683 adults per country). The percentage of participants who highlighted words as “like” and “dislike” was calculated for each of the sentences and countries. Analysis of the highlighting responses did not point to response style or systematic differences in responding. This supported the use of text highlighting in cross-cultural research. <dcterms:abstract>The present work aimed at exploring the automatic mental associations raised by salt and the influence of socio-demographic and psychographic variables on such associations. For this purpose, an online study was conducted in Uruguay using a non-probabilistic sample of 581 participants. Participants were asked to write down the first words that came to their mind when thinking of salt and to answer a questionnaire about discretionary salt consumption patterns. Then, they completed the consideration of future consequences (CFC) scale adapted for eating behaviour, a regulatory focus scale and a perceived risk of sodium consumption scale. Additionally, sociodemographic data were collected. The most frequent associations elicited by salt were related to negative health outcomes (41%), providing evidence that participants were already aware of the negative health consequences of excessive salt consumption. Responses within the themes food and flavour were also mentioned by a relatively high percentage of participants (34% and 31%, respectively). Results revealed that participants with higher perceived risk severity were more likely to associate salt with negative health outcomes while those with higher perceived risk compensation were less likely to provide responses within this theme. In addition, participants who self-reported an adequate salt consumption (i.e., a salt intake that meets dietary recommendations) were less likely to associate salt with negative health outcomes than those with low salt consumption, whereas the latter were less likely to associate salt with flavour. Results from the present work contribute to the understanding of Uruguayan’s perception, beliefs, and attitudes towards salt, providing valuable insights to inform the first steps in the development of communication strategies for reducing consumption of discretionary salt at the population level.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>A large body of evidence assessing the effectiveness of front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labeling exists. Most experimental studies have been conducted with fictitious products. However, consumers’ perception depends on several products extrinsic factors such as brand. Understanding how strong brand associations influence the effectiveness of FOP nutrition labeling schemes may be crucial to informing policymaking. In this context, the aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of five different variants of nutritional warnings labels (black magnifier, red magnifier, black octagon, black triangle, and red circle) on consumers’ choice of commercial products, compared with two FOP nutrition labeling schemes: the guidelines daily amounts (GDAs) system and the traffic light system (TLS). An online randomized controlled trial with 1,932 participants was used to evaluate the effect of FOP nutrition labeling on participants’ choices in eight sets of three commercial products, available in the Brazilian marketplace. A multinomial logistic regression model was used to evaluate the influence of FOP nutrition labeling on participants’ likelihood of selecting the different products in the choice task. Results showed that nutritional warnings and the TLS significantly increased the likelihood of selecting none of the products instead of the least healthful product, or a healthier product, in at least one of the product categories compared with the GDA. Warnings tended to have a larger effect, suggesting their potential to encourage healthier food choices.</dcterms:abstract>

Human presence in PAs is generally limited to minimal or banned exploitation of natural resources. However, different threats to PAs are evident as a result of short and long-range transport of organic pollutants of legacy and emerging concern. There has been a shift of interest in legacy pollutants such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to emerging compounds, resulting in a need for improved monitoring strategies in PAs. Here, we highlight the main advances in environmental analytical chemistry for legacy and emerging pollution monitoring in PAs. Trends in sampling, sample preparation and instrumental determination of multiclass organic pollutants in biotic and abiotic matrices are presented and discussed. Here, we considered the most relevant and recent literature regarding organic pollutants in PAs from terrestrial to aquatic landscapes collected within 2015 to the present time frame.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>African trypanosomiasis is a major problem for human and animal health in endemic countries, where it threatens millions of people and affects economic development. New drugs are needed to overcome the toxicity, administration, low efficacy, and resistance issues of the current chemotherapy. Robust, simple, and economical highthroughput, whole-cell-based assays are required to accelerate the identification of novel chemical entities. With this aim, we generated a bioluminescent cell line of the bloodstream stage of Trypanosoma brucei brucei and established a screening assay. Trypanosomes were stably transfected to constitutively express a thermostable redshifted luciferase. The growth phenotype and drug sensitivity of the reporter cell line were essentially identical to that of the parental cell line. The endogenous luciferase activity, measured by a simple bioluminescence assay, proved to be proportional to parasite number and metabolic status. The assay, optimized to detect highly potent compounds in a 96-well-plate format, was validated by screening a small compound library (inter-assay values for Z' factor and coefficient variation were 0.77 and 5.8%, respectively). With a hit-confirmation ratio of ~97%, the assay was potent enough to identify several hits with EC50 ≤ 10 μM. Preliminary tests indicated that the assay can be scaled up to a 384-well-plate format without compromising its robustness. In summary, we have generated reporter trypanosomes and a simple, robust, and affordable bioluminescence screening assay with great potential to speed up the early-phase drug discovery against African trypanosomes.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Grape variety, vinification, and ageing are factors conditioning the aroma of a wine, with volatile secondary metabolites responsible for the so-called grape varietal character. Particularly, grape glycosylated norisoprenoids are mostly responsible for the sensory profile of Tannat wines, making relevant the use of fast instrumental tools to evaluate their concentration, allow classifying grapes and defining the optimum maturity for harvest. NIR spectroscopy is a fast, non-destructive technique, which requires minimal sample preparation. However, its quantitative applications need chemometric models for interpretation. In this work, a NIR-ANN calibration was developed to quantify norisoprenoids in Vitis vinifera cv. Tannat grapes during maturation and harvesting. Glycosidated norisoprenoids were determined by GC–MS. The ANN adjustments showed better performance than linear models such as PLS, while the best calibration was obtained by homogenising grape samples when comparing to grape juice; making possible to fit a model with an error of 146 μg/kg.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The subfamily Cerambycinae, one of the most diverse in longhorn beetles, is well known for its remarkable chemical parsi mony in male-emitted pheromones. Conserved shared structural motifs have been reported in numerous species, sometimes working in combination with plant volatile kairomones. Among other compounds, the most ubiquitous male pheromone in cerambycine species is 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one. We conducted feld trials using intercept traps baited with 3-hydroxyhexan- 2-one and observed abundant captures of several Neotropical cerambycine species. These were Retrachydes thoracicus thoracicus (Olivier), Megacyllene acuta (Germar), Compsocerus violaceus (White), and Cotyclytus curvatus (Germar) in high numbers, as well as Chydarteres striatus striatus (Fabricius) and Odontocroton favicauda (Bates) in smaller numbers. When ethanol was added to the traps, a remarkable increase in the attractiveness of 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one was observed for R. thoracicus thoracicus and M. acuta. Adding ethanol also resulted in the capture of Chrysoprasis aurigena (Germar). Finally, incidental catches in pheromone-baited traps of Trachelissa maculicollis (Audinet-Serville), Neoclytus pusillus (Laporte & Gory), Achryson unicolor (Bruch, 1908) and Achryson surinamum (Linnaeus), Megacyllene mellyi (Chevrolat) and Thelgetra adustus (Burmeister) were also observed. Pheromone chemistry has been reported for C. curvatus, M. acuta and N. pusillus, all three producing 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one, and for C. aurigena and A. surinamum, which produce other compounds. Our fndings suggest that the captured species probably produce 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one for their pheromone communication system. Alternatively, they might be “eavesdropping” on the pheromones of other cerambycine species. The probable synergistic efect of ethanol is likely explained from its kairomonal role as a volatile cue for plant stress or ripeness.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>New compounds to fght cancer are needed due to cancer high incidence and lack of curative treatments for several classes of this disease. Metal-based coordination compounds ofer a variety of molecules that can turn into drugs. Among them, coordi nation copper complexes are emerging as an attractive class of compounds for cancer treatment. A series of [Cu(l-dipeptide) (tmp)] (tmp=3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) complexes were synthesized and characterized in the solid state, including the determination of the crystalline structure of [Cu(Gly-Gly)(tmp)]·3.5 H2O and [Cu2Cl4(tmp)2]. The complexes were studied in solution, where the major species are also ternary ones. The lipophilicity of the complexes was determined and the binding to the DNA was evaluated, suggesting that it occurs in the DNA’s major groove. The cytotoxicity of the com plexes was evaluated on diferent cancer cell lines: human metastatic breast adenocarcinoma MDA-MB-231 (triple negative, ATCC: HTB-26), MCF-7 (ATCC: HTB-22), SK-BR-3 (ATCC: HTB-30), human lung epithelial carcinoma A549 (ATCC: CCL-185), cisplatin resistant-human ovarian carcinoma A2780cis (SIGMA) and nontumoral cell lines: MRC-5 (lung; ATCC: CCL-171) and MCF-10A (breast, ATCC: CRL-10317). [Cu(l-dipeptide)(tmp)] complexes are highly cytotoxic as compared to [Cu(l-dipeptide)(phenanthroline)] and cisplatin. Therefore, [Cu(l-dipeptide)(tmp)] complexes are promising candidates to have their in vivo activity further studied toward new treatments for triple negative breast cancer and other aggressive tumors for which there is no curative pharmacological treatment to the date.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>1,10-Phenanthroline, phen, is a molecule with a wide variety of chemical and biological activities, being interesting from a pharmacological standpoint. Its metal complexes have been extensively studied during the last century. Considering the vast applications of phen and its metallic complexes for the development of potential metallodrugs, it becomes of utmost importance to study the molecule’s interaction with diferent molecular targets. So far, in-depth analyses of phen and metal–phen complexes’ interaction with DNA are abundant. Nevertheless, little has been reported on the interaction of this molecule with the frst molecular “target” that it fnds in the cell, the lipid membrane. Here, we present the characterization of the interaction of the phen molecule with model membranes of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) or 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1′-rac-glycerol) (sodium salt) (DPPG) using a combination of diferential scan ning calorimetry and molecular dynamics simulations. Our results indicate that phen difuses into the membranes, being stabilized around the middle of the hydrocarbon chains in DPPC, while in DPPG, it is placed near the center of the bilayer.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>A recent screen of 67,012 compounds identified a new family of compounds with excellent nematicidal activity: the ortho-substituted benzamide families Wact-11 and Wact-12. These com pounds are active against Caenorhabditis elegans and parasitic nematodes by selectively inhibiting nematode complex II, and they display low toxicity in mammalian cells and vertebrate organisms. Although a big number of benzamides were tested against C. elegans in high-throughput screens, bioisosteres of the amide moiety were not represented in the chemical space examined. We thus iden tified an opportunity for the design, synthesis and evaluation of novel compounds, using bioisosteric replacements of the amide group present in benzamides. The compound Wact-11 was used as the reference scaffold to prepare a set of bioisosteres to be evaluated against C. elegans. Eight types of amide replacement were selected, including ester, thioamide, selenoamide, sulfonamide, alkyl thio and oxo-amides, urea and triazole. The results allowed us to perform a structure–activity relationship, highlighting the relevance of the amide group for nematicide activity. Experimental evidence was complemented with in silico structural studies over a C. elegans complex II model as a molecular target of benzamides. Importantly, compound Wact-11 was active against the flatworm Echinococcus granulosus, suggesting a previously unreported pan-anthelmintic potential for benzamides.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Yeasts of the genus Hanseniaspora gained notoriety in the last years due to their contribution to wine quality, and their loss of several genes, mainly related to DNA repair and cell cycle processes. Based on genomic data from many members of this genus, they have been classified in two well defined clades: the “faster-evolving linage” (FEL) and the “slower-evolving lineage” (SEL). In this context, we had detected that H. vineae exhibited a rapid loss of cell viability in some conditions during the stationary phase compared to H. uvarum and S. cerevisiae. The present work aimed to evaluate the viability and cell cycle progression of representatives of Hanseniaspora species along their growth in an aerobic and discontinuous system. Cell growth, viability and DNA content were determined by turbidity, Trypan Blue staining, and flow cytometry, respectively. Results showed that H. uvarum and H. opuntiae (representing FEL group), and H. osmophila (SEL group) exhibited a typical G1/G0 (1C DNA) arrest during the stationary phase, as S. cerevisiae. Conversely, the three strains studied here of H. vineae (SEL group) arrested at G2/M stages of cell cycle (2C DNA), and lost viability rapidly when enter the stationary phase. These results showed that H. vineae have a unique cell cycle behavior that will contribute as a new eukaryotic model for future studies of genetic determinants of yeast cell cycle control and progression.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>An in-depth understanding of people’s experiences, beliefs and thoughts about cooking and homemade meals is essential for the design of a more effective discourse to encourage cooking from scratch. In this context, the objective of the present work was to explore the social representations of homemade meals and cooking. An online survey was conducted with 974 Uruguayan adults, recruited using an advertisement on Facebook. Participants were asked to write down the first words that came to their mind when thinking of homemade meals and cooking. Responses were coded into categories using inductive coding. The structure of the social representations was explored using the frequency of mention and rank of appearance of the categories. Results showed
that the social representations of homemade meals were largely consensual among participants and mainly related to pleasure, health, and wellbeing. However, the social representations of cooking did not have a clear structure, which raised diverse associations related to homemade foods, positive emotions but also to lack of convenience in terms of time and effort. Results suggest public campaigns aimed at encouraging people to cook from scratch should position cooking as enjoyable task and diminish perception of lack of time and effort association.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Governments worldwide are increasingly mandating the inclusion of graphic and textual warnings on the packages and advertisements of processed products with high content of nutrients associated with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of nutritional warnings on the mental associations raised by advertisements featuring ultra-processed products. An online experiment was performed with a convenience sample of 380 Uruguayan participants. Participants were exposed to either
control advertisements or advertisements featuring black octagonal nutritional warnings. Right after watching the advertisements, they were asked to complete a word association task. Responses were grouped into 20 categories following inductive coding. A generalized linear model was used to assess the effect of experimental condition on the likelihood of providing responses within each of the identified categories. Participants exposed to the advertisements with (vs. without) warnings were more likely to provide responses related to NCDs or nutritional warnings. Meanwhile, no significant differences were found in the frequency of mention of categories related to sensory, hedonic, emotional, or social aspects linked to consuming the products between participants
exposed to advertisements with and without warnings. These results suggest that nutritional warnings may be a promising strategy to make consumers aware of the nutritional characteristics of ultra-processed products without affecting the ability of advertisements to convey their intended message.</dcterms:abstract>

An analytical methodology was adjusted and validated for the analysis of 15 selected pesticides currently employed in extensive agriculture. The main application of this methodology is studying the pesticides degradation behavior using biobeds as a friendly environmental tool for the treatment of wastewaters generated in fields. The scope of the method was selected based on the most used pesticides in soybean crops in Uruguay. The novelty of this work is the inclusion of neutral and acidic herbicides such as 2,4-D, clethodim, dicamba, together with fungicides and insecticides which are usually included in Multi Residue Methods. An acetonitrile extraction methodology without a clean-up step yielded acceptable results for all the analytes. The instrumental analysis was performed using HPLC-MS/MS. The selected methodology was validated according to the SANTE guidelines. The recoveries were between 65 and 130% with RSD < 20%. The instrumental LOQs were fixed at 1 µg/L for all the compounds except for clethodim, and the method LOQs were 1 mg/kg in biomixture dry basis. These LOQs values are acceptable for biodegradation studies in biobeds.

<dcterms:abstract>The main goal of this mini-review is to provide an updated state-of-the-art of the hybrid organic-inorganic materials focusing mainly on interface phenomena involving ionic and electronic transport properties. First, we review the most relevant preparation techniques and the structural features of hybrid organic-inorganic materials prepared by solution-phase reaction of inorganic/organic precursor into organic/inorganic hosts and vapor-phase infiltration of the inorganic precursor into organic hosts and molecular layer deposition of organic precursor onto the inorganic surface. Particular emphasis is given to the advances in joint experimental and theoretical studies discussing diverse types of computational simulations for hybrid-organic materials and interfaces. We make a specific revision on the separately ionic, and electronic transport properties of these hybrid organic inorganic materials focusing mostly on interface phenomena. Finally, we deepen into mixed ionic-electronic transport properties and provide our concluding remarks and give some perspectives about this growing field of research.</dcterms:abstract>

Two compounds were isolated, and their structures elucidated using a combination of NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. One of these compounds is a previously undescribed triterpene saponin (Qb1), which is an isomer of QS-21, the unique adjuvant saponin employed in human vaccines. The other compound is a triterpene saponin previously isolated from Quillaja saponaria bark, known as S13. The structure of Qb1 consists of a quillaic acid residue substituted with a -D-Galp-(1!2)-[ -D-Xylp-(1!3)]- -D-GlcpA trisaccharide at C3, and a -D-Xylp-(1!4)- -L-Rhap-(1!2)-[ -L-Arap-(1!3)]- -D-Fucp moiety at C28. <dcterms:abstract>Global warming has a strong impact on polar regions. Particularly, the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands have experienced a marked warming trend in the past 50 years. Therefore, higher methane (CH4) emissions from this area could be expected in the future. Since mitigation of these emissions can be carried out by microbial oxidation, understanding this biological process is crucial since to our knowledge,no related studies have been performed in this area before. In this work, the aerobic CH4 oxidation potential of five freshwater lake sediments of Fildes Peninsula (King George Island, South Shetland Islands) was determined with values from 0.07 to 10 mmol CH4 gdw-1 day-1 and revealed up to 100-fold increase in temperature gradients (5, 10, 15, and 20C). The structure and diversity of the bacterial community in the sediments were analyzed by next-generation sequencing (Illumina MiSeq) of 16S rRNA and pmoA genes. A total of 4,836 ASVs were identified being Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, Acidobacteriota, and Bacteroidota the most abundant phyla. The analysis of the pmoA gene identified 200 ASVs of methanotrophs, being Methylobacter Clade 2 (Type I, family Methylococcaceae) the main responsible of the aerobic CH4 oxidation. Moreover, both approaches revealed the presence of methanotrophs of the classes Gammaproteobacteria (families Methylococcaceae and Crenotrichaceae), Alphaproteobacteria (family Methylocystaceae), Verrucomicrobia (family Methylacidiphilaceae), and the candidate phylum of anaerobic methanotrophs Methylomirabilota. In addition, bacterial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) biomarkers were studied as a proxy for aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria and confirmed these results. Methanotrophic bacterial diversity was significantly correlated with pH. In conclusion, our findings suggest that aerobic methanotrophs could mitigate in situ CH4 emissionsin a future scenario with higher temperatures in this climate-sensitive area. This study provides new insights into the diversity of methanotrophs, as well as the influence of
temperature on the CH4 oxidation potential in sediments of freshwater lakes in polar regions of the southern hemisphere.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>
Background: Helminthiasis and resistance to commercial anthelmintic compounds are major causes of economic
losses for livestock producers, resulting in an urgent need for new drugs and reliable in vitro screening tests capable
of detecting potentially active products. Considering this, a series of novel benzimidazole derivatives (5-methylbenzimidazole 1,2-disubstituted, 5-carboxybenzimidazole, 5-methylbenzimidazole 2-one) was screened on exsheathed L3 (xL3) and on the adult stage of Haemonchus contortus (Kirby anthelmintic-susceptible McMaster isolate).
Methods: This work presents the set-up of an automated motility assay on the xL3 stage of H. contortus using an
infrared tracking device (WMicrotracker One) together with a larval development test (xL3 to L4) and a motility assay
on the adult stage of H. contortus. A comparative study of the sensitivity of these in vitro assays using commercial
anthelmintics with different mechanisms of action was carried out, also evaluating anthelmintic activity of a series of
novel benzimidazole derivatives.
Results: The automated xL3 assay had the great advantage of being able to analyze many compounds simultaneously,
but it showed the limitation of having lower sensitivity, requiring higher concentrations of the commercial
anthelmintics tested compared to those needed for the adult motility or development assays. Although none of the
novel 1,2,5-tri-substituted benzimidazole derivatives could significantly decrease the motility of xL3s, one of them (1e)
significantly affected the development of xL3s to L4, and five new compounds (1b, 1d, 1e, 2a and 2c) reduced the
motility of H. contortus adult stage.
Conclusions: The analysis of the results strongly suggests that the in vitro xL3 to L4 development test, particularly
for the L4 stage, could be closer to the pharmacological sensitivity of the adult stage of H. contortus (target of interest)
for commercial anthelmintic selected, with different mechanisms of action, and for the series of benzimidazole
derivatives assayed. Therefore, an automated motility assay on L4 using the infrared tracking device is being set up.
Further studies will be conducted to evaluate the in vivo anthelmintic activity of the most active novel benzimidazole
derivatives.
</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Onion is among the most consumed vegetables in Uruguay, grown in the northwestern and southern regions of the country. The onion supply presents interannual variations associated with significant postharvest losses, mainly caused by bacterial rots. Besides bulb rotting, onion leaf lesions as well as infections on seed-stalks during seed production may be devastating for some varieties under conducive conditions. This research aimed to identify the causal agents of bulb rots and leaf blight of onion crops in Uruguay. Symptomatic bulbs, seeds-stalks, and leaves were collected from commercial fields from 2015 to 2020. Bacterial colonies were isolated and identified at genera level using physiological tests and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. A collection of 59 Pantoea spp. isolates was obtained (11 from bulbs and 48 from leaves and seeds-stalks). Multilocus sequence analysis using four housekeeping genes (rpoB, gyrB, leuS, and fusA) allowed the assignment of the isolates to five Pantoea species: P. ananatis, P. agglomerans, P. allii, P. eucalypti, and P. vagans. The last two species were not previously reported as onion pathogens elsewhere. The ability to cause disease symptoms was tested by leaf inoculation and red onion scale assays. P. ananatis isolates showed the highest aggressiveness in both assays. Specific isolates from P. allii (MAI 6022), P. eucalypti (MAI 6036), P. vagans (MAI 6050), and Pantoea sp. (MAI 6049) ranked second in aggressiveness on onion leaves, whereas only three isolates belonging to P. eucalypti (MAI 6036 and MAI 6058) and P. agglomerans (MAI 6045) exhibited the same scale-clearing phenotype as P. ananatis. Leaf inoculation assays were also performed on a set of eight onion cultivars and breeding lines. Overall, P. ananatis MAI 6032 showed the highest aggressiveness in all tested cultivars, followed by P. eucalypti MAI 6036. The presence of new reported bacterial species leads to complex disease management and highlights the need for further studies on virulence factors and the epidemiology of these pathogens.</dcterms:abstract>
