<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Seven cobalt(II) complexes of pyrazole derivatives and dinitrobenzoate ligands were synthesized and characterized. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure was determined for one of the ligands and one of the complexes. The analysis and spectral data showed that all the cobalt complexes had octahedral geometries, which was supported by DFT calculations. The complexes and their free ligands were evaluated against fungal strains of Candida albicans and emerging non-albicans species and epimastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi. We obtained antifungal activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranging from 31.3 to 250 µg mL-1. The complexes were more active against C. krusei, showing MIC values between 31.25 and 62.5 µg mL-1. In addition, some ligands (L1-L6) and complexes (5 and Co(OAc)2 · 4H2O) significantly reduced the yeast to hypha transition of C. albicans at 500 µg mL-1 (inhibition ranging from 30 to 54%). Finally, the complexes and ligands did not present trypanocidal activity and were not toxic to Vero cells. Our results suggest that complexes of cobalt(II) with ligands derived from pyrazoles and dinitrobenzoate may be an attractive alternative for the treatment of diseases caused by fungi, especially because they target one of the most important virulence factors of C. albicans.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Cholesterol is a C27-sterol employed as starting material for the synthesis of valuable pharmaceutical steroids and precursors. The microbial transformations of cholesterol have been widely studied, since they are performed with high regio- and stereoselectivity and allow the production of steroidal compounds which are difficult to synthesize by classical chemical methods. In recent years, ongoing research is being conducted to discover novel biocatalysts and to develop biotechnological processes to improve existing biocatalysts and biotransformation reactions. The main objective of this review is to present the most remarkable advances in fungal and bacterial transformation of cholesterol, focusing on the different types of microbial reactions and biocatalysts, biotransformation products, and practical aspects related to sterol dispersion improvement, covering literature since 2000. It reviews the conversion of cholesterol by whole-cell biocatalysts and by purified enzymes that lead to various structural modifications, including side chain cleavage, hydroxylation, dehydrogenation/reduction, isomerization and esterification. Finally, approaches used to improve the poor solubility of cholesterol in aqueous media, such as the use of different sterol-solubilizing agents or two-phase conversion system, are also discussed.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The EDLCs demonstrated nearly ideal capacitive behavior even at very high charging/discharging currents (10 A g −1 ) and cell potential scan rates (500 mV s −1 ). The EDLCs completed from SgTiC-CDC materials and EtMeImBF 4 and Et 3 MeNBF 4 + AN show good energy efficiencies (varying from 93% to 95% at current 1 A g −1 ) and coulombic efficiency values exceeded 99%. Thus, the EDLCs completed are very promising devices for extremely high power/energy density applications. 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EtMeImBF 4 ) ionic liquid was chosen due to the wide potential region of electrochemical stability, good conductivity (13.6 mS cm −1 ) and moderate viscosity ( 4 in AN has lower viscosity (0.41 mPa s) and higher electrical conductivity (50.2 mS cm −1 ) and this electrolyte is also electrochemically stable within a very wide region of cell potentials. Carbon materials were synthesized from specially designed titanium carbide that had been synthesized via sol-gel method.Data in Figs. 4e and 4f show that for SgTiC-CDC two-electrode symmetrical cell no quick faradaic reactions occur up to 3.8 V in EtMeImBF 4 The calculated specific capacitance values are given in Table II. <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Limited shelf life of bakery products, caused by microbial deterioration, is a concern for industries due to economic losses. Fungal spoilage of sponge cakes industrially produced in Montevideo was caused mainly by Penicillium species, in particular by Penicillium crustosum. The combination of different hurdles was studied to inhibit P. crustosum growth in sponge cakes. A full factorial design was performed to study the effect of the concentration of potassium sorbate, pH, packaging atmosphere and storage time. The results showed that packaging atmosphere and storage time were the significant factors in the ranges tested. No growth was detected in cakes stored in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) (N2:CO2 50:50) at room temperature (25 °C) for 15 days. The effect of MAP on P. crustosum growth in cakes at room temperature was compared with the effect of air-packaging and storage at low temperature (4 °C) for 30 days. P. crustosum growth was not detected in cakes packaged in MAP, whereas it was detected after 20 days in cakes packaged in air and stored at 4 °C. This growth was quantified by a specific real time PCR developed in this work. Specific primers were designed using the sequence of β-tubulin gene of P. crustosum as a target and PCR conditions were adjusted to ensure specificity. PCR efficiency was 107%, with a detection limit of 0.0014 ng of DNA. The qPCR method presented here, resulted specific and sensitive enough to detect the growth of P. crustosum even before biodeterioration signs were visible.]]></dcterms:abstract>

In addition, the volatile fraction was studied by HS‐SPME‐GC‐MS. The botanical species most visited by Apis mellifera L. near the apiaries were collected and their RP‐HPTLC extracts profiles were compared with propolis samples. In addition, GC‐MS was performed for volatile compounds from Zuccagnia punctata Cav. (Fabaceae). FT‐IR spectra and RP‐HPTLC fingerprints of propolis samples showed similar profiles. In RP‐HPTLC analyses, only Z. punctata presented a similar fingerprint to Amaicha propolis. The major volatile compounds present in both were trans‐linalool oxide (furanoid), 6‐camphenone, linalool, trans‐pinocarveol, p‐cymen‐8‐ol, and 2,3,6‐trimethylbenzaldehyde. <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) seeds are composed of a high oil content rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants such as tocopherols and carotenes, resulting in an interesting nutritional aspect. Oil from hemp seeds extracted using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as the solvent preserves the qualities described above. However, the high operating pressures and the low solubility of the oil in scCO2 significantly increase operating costs. Generally, the use of pressurized n-propane as a solvent for extraction of vegetable oils is an alternative to overcome these challenges without changing their nutritional qualities. The main objective of this work was to study the extraction of the oil from dehulled hemp seeds using scCO2, pressurized n-propane and organic solvents at atmosphere conditions, to compare some physicochemical properties of the extracts. The extraction conditions using scCO2 as the solvent were 40 and 60 °C and 30 and 40 MPa. These operating conditions of extraction are similar to those available in the literature. For pressurized n-propane used as a solvent, temperatures of 40, 50 and 60 °C and pressures of 6, 8 and 10 MPa were used. The values of the extraction pressures with n-propane were defined from the knowledge of the phase behavior measured for the system n-propane (1) / hemp seed oil (2). The values of the mass percentage yields were similar for both pressurized solvents. However, the solubility of the oil in n-propane was higher than in scCO2. The kinetics of the extractions were satisfactorily using the Sovová modeling.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Using VDW-DF, M06-L, LSDA, LSDA+U, PBE and PBE-D2 methods we have performed a comparative study of the preferable magnetic configuration of the system. In this work, for the first time, we report a stable antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering in the buffer layer caused by the presence of silicon dangling bonds in the SiC top layer. This state is nearly degenerated with the ferromagnetic state with a magnetic moment equal to the number of silicon dangling bonds. A net magnetic moment of 0.55 µb per Si dangling bond was found for both states. However, only for the ferromagnetic state the carbon atoms of the buffer layer exhibited a magnetic moment. The magnetic configuration is much more stable than the non-polarized one and might explain SQUID results and spin transport experiments with epitaxial graphene. Furthermore, we found that, as previously observed experimentally, the buffer layer is a true semiconductor.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Effect of a combined power ultrasound (US) and chlorine disinfection treatment on quality of fresh-cut ready-to-eat lettuce (cv. Vera) was evaluated. Fresh-cut lettuce was disinfected using 100 mg L−1 NaOCl solution alone and in combination with ultrasound (130 W, 42 kHz) for different times (0–30 min). Lettuce samples (80 g) were then packaged in polypropylene (PP) film and stored at 5 °C for 8 d. Application of US improved microbial reduction on processing day: an additional reduction in the range of 0.5–2.5 log cfu g−1 was obtained with respect to NaOCl treatment alone. Combined US-NaOCl application did not cause visual changes to lettuce neither on processing day nor when samples were stored under refrigerated conditions in passive modified atmosphere. Confocal images evidenced that US application could affect lettuce surface wax layer, removing its natural defense against microorganisms. This resulted in higher microbial growth throughout storage in samples treated with combined US-NaOCl treatment. US appears as a promising technique for fresh-cut produce disinfection, but further studies are needed to optimize US treatment to allow important microbial reductions throughout all storage time without compromising lettuce shelf life during refrigerated storage.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Selenoproteins fulfil essential roles in many organisms1, yet are not ubiquitous across the tree of life3,4,5,6,7. In particular, fungi were deemed devoid of selenoproteins4,5,8. However, we show here that Sec is utilized by nine species belonging to diverse early-branching fungal phyla, as evidenced by the genomic presence of both Sec machinery and selenoproteins. Most fungal selenoproteins lack consensus Sec recoding signals (SECIS elements9) but exhibit other RNA structures, suggesting altered mechanisms of Sec insertion in fungi. Phylogenetic analyses support a scenario of vertical inheritance of the Sec trait within eukaryotes and fungi. Sec was then lost in numerous independent events in various fungal lineages. Notably, Sec was lost at the base of Dikarya, resulting in the absence of selenoproteins in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and other well-studied fungi. Our results indicate that, despite scattered occurrence, selenoproteins are found in all kingdoms of life.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Background Microbial oils produced by diverse microorganisms are being considered as alternative sources of triglycerides for biodiesel production. However, the standalone production of biodiesel from microorganisms is not currently economically feasible. In case of yeasts, the use of low-value nutrient sources in microbial production and the implementation of cost-efficient downstream processes could reduce costs and make microbial lipids competitive with other commodity-type oils in biodiesel production. Industrial biodiesel synthesis from oleaginous seeds is currently based on a multistep process. However, a simple process called in situ transesterification (ISTE), which takes place within the biomass without a previous lipid extraction step, is receiving increasing interest. In this work, the optimal conditions for an ISTE process to obtain biodiesel from previously selected oleaginous yeast (Rhodotorula graminis S1/S2) were defined using the response surface methodology (RSM). Results Using the RSM approach, the optimal conditions for the maximum yield with minimum reaction time included a methanol-to-biomass ratio of 60:1, 0.4 M H2SO4, and incubation at 70°C for 3 h. The optimized in situ process yield was significantly higher (123%) than that obtained with a two-step method in which fatty acids from saponifiable lipids were first extracted and then esterified with methanol. The composition of the fatty acid methyl ester mixture obtained from R. graminis S1/S2 by ISTE met Uruguayan standards for biodiesel. Conclusion The characteristics achieved by the optimized method make microbial oil a potential alternative for biodiesel production from yeast at an industrial scale. <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[New processing technologies are gaining popularity worldwide due to several advantages related to food safety, shelf life extension, nutritional and sensory quality. However, consumers can be cautious of food products produced using these technologies. In this context, the objectives of the study were to explore consumers' spontaneous associations with fruit juices processed using different technologies, and to study the influence of food technology neophobia on those associations. A study with 423 Brazilian consumers was conducted to evaluate their perception of five types of juices (fresh juice, cold pressed juice, pasteurized juice, pressurized juice and non-pressurized juice) using word association. Participants also answered the Food Technology Neophobia Scale (FTNS) and a series of socio-demographic questions. Results showed that consumers' attitudes towards processing technologies were mainly defined by top-down processes. Fresh, cold pressed and non-pressurized juice were mainly associated with healthy and natural products, whereas concepts including references to processing technologies were associated with processed products and unhealthiness. Food technology neophobia moderated consumers' perceptions of juice processing technologies. Interestingly, consumers with high technology neophobia perceived juices processed by both conventional and innovative technologies more negatively than those with low or medium levels of neophobia.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Excessive sugar intake is a global public health concern, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) represent one of the main sources of added sugar in the diet. In this sense, the inclusion of front of pack (FOP) nutritional schemes and food reformulation are strategies that could contribute to reduce sugar consumption and improve population health status. The aims of this work were to evaluate adults and children’s choice of sugar-reduced drinks in the context of the implementation of FOP nutrition labelling under different evaluation conditions, and to compare the influence of two FOP nutrition labelling schemes: the traffic-light system (TLS) and nutritional warnings. For that, 400 adults and 400 children (6–12 years old) divided in 2 groups (n = 200) each chose samples of grape nectar or chocolate flavoured milk (control and two sugar reduction levels) featuring different FOP nutritional schemes, under three experimental conditions: (a) blind, tasting the samples without any information, (b) expected, looking at the packages, and (c) informed, looking at the packages and tasting the samples. In each experimental condition, participants were asked to choose one of the three products. Both FOP schemes encouraged adults and children’s to choose for healthier products under the expected condition. In the case of adults, nutritional warnings outperformed the traffic light system in the task involving grape nectars. However, when participants tasted the products (blind and informed conditions), choices were defined by their sensory characteristics and the control samples without sugar reduction were the most frequently selected. These results indicate that consumers’ hedonic experience overrode the effect of FOP nutrition labelling and suggest that this public policy is unlikely to have a real effect on consumers’ choices if there are no healthy alternatives that meet their sensory and hedonic expectations]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Excessive sugar consumption has been identified as the main dietary determinants of obesity among children and adolescents. Sugar sweetened beverages are one of the main sources of added sugar in the diet. Therefore, gradual sugar reduction in these products can contribute to decreasing sugar intake and encourage children to slowly develop preference for products with lower sugar concentration. However, specific recommendations on how to implement gradual sugar reduction programs are still lacking. The aim of the present study was to compare two sugar reduction strategies (stepwise vs. gradual) on children’s sensory and hedonic perception of grape nectar. One hundred and seventeen 6–12 years old children participated in a two-part study: a 9-week study and a final liking test at the end of 11 weeks. In the 9-week study, children were divided in two sugar reduction strategies: stepwise and gradual. Children’s sensory and hedonic perception was evaluated using 9-point hedonic scales and check-all-that-apply questions. There were no major differences between the gradual and stepwise reduction groups in children’s sensory and hedonic perception. However, results showed that the gradual reduction strategy led to smaller changes in children’s sensory and hedonic perception than the stepwise strategy. In the final test, children in the stepwise group gave significantly higher liking scores to the samples than those in the gradual sugar reduction strategy. Comparing the overall liking between the first time the children tasted the grape nectars and the final test, a significant difference was observed for the sample with lower sugar content only for the stepwise group, which was higher in the 11th week. Although differences between the sugar reduction strategies were small, the gradual reduction strategy seems to be recommended over the step-wise strategy.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Isolates were named as CPI10 and CPI12, according to their extraction pH, 10 or 12, respectively. The surface properties of both isolates were studied at neutral conditions. Foams were formed by air bubbling and both the formation and destabilization processes were analysed by conductimetry. The extraction pH significantly affected the interfacial properties of chia proteins. The higher surface hydrophobicity in CPI10 led to more flexible proteins with improved foaming properties. Foams formed by CPI10 were more stable than those by CPI12 due to the formation of a thicker interfacial film, which meant a greater ability to retard liquid drainage. Freshly-made coarse emulsions stabilized with CPI12 showed a lower mean droplet size and a significantly lower degree of overall destabilization than those stabilized with CPI10. None of the two emulsions showed flocculating effect.]]></dcterms:abstract>

To that end, in this work we describe and characterise bioactive compounds generation from rice husk by semi-solid fermentation, obtained from 500 g of the material at room temperature and 60% humidity with mixed cultures of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Gloeophyllum trabeum. The extract was evaluated in different situations: murine mammary tumour cells (4T1), normal cells (NIH 3T3) and in Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Trichoderma harzianum. The results exhibited that the extract inhibited 4T1 cells at concentrations higher than 20μg/mL, but did not inhibit normal cells, and displayed germicide activity after 3 days incubations. We propose that these functionalized compounds have a potential application in industry/agriculture/medicine obtained from rice husk waste.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A Gram-stain-positive, alkaliphilic, moderately halophilic, cocci-shaped actinobacterium (strain M8T) was isolated from a sample of soda lake sediment (Lake Magadi, Tanzania). The isolate was heterotrophic, strictly aerobic, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative and formed orange-pigmented colonies in solid media. It utilized various sugars and organic acids as sole carbon sources. The organism grew at 10-38 °C, at pH 7.5-12.0 and in the presence of 1-12 % (w/v) NaCl, with optimal growth occurring at 30 °C, at pH 10 and in the presence of 5 % (w/v) NaCl. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain M8T belonged to the genus Nesterenkonia, sharing the closest similarities to Nesterenkoniahalobia DSM 20541T, Nesterenkoniahalophila YIM 70179T and Nesterenkoniaaethiopica DSM 17733T (97.5, 97.5 and 97.1 %, respectively). The characteristic diamino acid of strain M8T was found to be lysine and the polar lipids detected were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, two unidentified glycolipids and two unidentified phospholipids. The DNA G+C content was 61.8 mol% (genome). The strain contained MK-7, MK-9 and MK-10 as the respiratory quinones, and the major fatty acids (>10 %) comprised anteiso-C17 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. On the basis of phylogenetic analyses and phenotypic data, strain M8T is considered to represent a novel species, for which the name Nesterenkonianatronophila sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M8T (=JCM 32100T=CGMCC 1.16706T=MCC 3367T).]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[It is well known that high ethanol levels in wines adversely affect the perception of new wine consumers. Moreover, numerous issues, such as civil restrictions, health risk and trade barriers, are associated with high ethanol concentrations. Several strategies have been proposed to produce wines with lower alcoholic content, one simple and inexpensive approach being the use of new wine native yeasts with less efficiency in sugar to ethanol conversion. Nevertheless, it is also necessary that these yeasts do not impair the quality of wine. In this work, we tested the effect of sequential culture between Hanseniaspora uvarum BHu9 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae BSc114 on ethanol production. Then, the wines produced were analyzed by GC-MS and tested by a sensorial panel. Co-culture had a positive impact on ethanol reduction and sensory profile when compared to the S. cerevisiae monoculture. Wines with lower alcohol content were related to fruity aroma; moreover, color intensity was associated. The wines obtained with S. cerevisiae BSc114 in pure conditions were described by parameters linked with high ethanol levels, such as hotness and astringency. Moreover, floral profile was related to this treatment. Based on these findings, this work provides a contribution to answer the current consumers’ preferences and addresses the main challenges faced by the enological industry]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Echinococcus granulosus is the parasite responsible for cystic echinococcosis (CE), an important worldwide‐distributed zoonosis. New effective vaccines against CE could potentially have great economic and health benefits. Here, we describe an innovative vaccine design scheme starting from an antigenic fraction enriched in tegumental antigens from the protoscolex stage (termed PSEx) already known to induce protection against CE. We first used mass spectrometry to characterize the protein composition of PSEx followed by Gene Ontology analysis to study the potential Biological Processes, Molecular Functions, and Cellular Localizations of the identified proteins. Following, antigenicity predictions and determination of conservancy degree against other organisms were determined. Thus, nine novel proteins were identified as potential vaccine candidates. Furthermore, linear B cell epitopes free of posttranslational modifications were predicted in the whole PSEx proteome through colocalization of in silico predicted epitopes within peptide fragments identified by matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization‐TOF/TOF. Resulting peptides were termed “clean linear B cell epitopes,” and through BLASTp scanning against all nonhelminth proteins, those with 100% identity against any other protein were discarded. Then, the secondary structure was predicted for peptides and their corresponding proteins. Peptides with highly similar secondary structure respect to their parental protein were selected, and those potentially toxic and/or allergenic were discarded. Finally, the selected clean linear B cell epitopes were mapped within their corresponding 3D‐modeled protein to analyze their possible antibody accessibilities, resulting in 14 putative peptide vaccine candidates. We propose nine novel proteins and 14 peptides to be further tested as vaccine candidates against CE.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Here, we report large magnetoresistance and magnetocapacitance response of undoped TiO2 quantum dots weighting the contribution of both grain and grain boundaries by means of impedance spectroscopy. We also performed a complete characterization of the TiO2 quantum dots (~5 nm) prepared by sol-gel via water vapor diffusion method, using X-ray diffraction, small angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, we showed a complete theoretical study on the electronic properties of TiO2 surface and subsurface oxygen and titanium vacancies to shed some light in their electronic and magnetic properties. Based in our study, we can conclude that the presence of defects, mainly at the grain boundary of these undoped TiO2 quantum dots, could be responsible for the large positive magnetoresistance (+1200%) and negative magnetocapacitance (−115%) responses at low applied magnetic fields (1.8 kOe) and room temperature.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In this report, we studied the interaction between 9-vinylcarbazole (VK) –i.e. the monomer of poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK)- and a TiO2 (101) surface in order to shed some light in the interface phenomena of this promising fullerene-free donor:acceptor system as active layer for solar cells. Since the role of the TiO2 surface defects is the main concern of our study, we proceeded to simulate the adsorption of the molecule on TiO2 with oxygen or titanium atom vacancies and without any defect. All these systems were studied using First Principles calculations, utilizing Density Functional Theory (DFT). The adsorption energy of the VK monomer-TiO2 systems was favorable in all cases. The presence of vacancies in the TiO2 surface yielded modifications in the electronic properties: the difference between the LUMO level of VK and the conduction band of TiO2-O surface is only ~0.2 eV, thus allowing to infer a decrease in the energy barrier associated to the injection of electrons from VK monomer towards the TiO2-O surface. The charge density differences in all systems also revealed that the donor:acceptor model is plausible and concurs with previous results, suggesting promising features for potential application as a donor:acceptor systems in fullerene-free solar cells.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Here we present a theoretical study based on density functional theory (DFT) of the electronic and optical properties of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) doped with sulfur and nitrogen atoms. Unlike the actual literature, which focusses mostly in the edge functionalization of GQDs, our report focusses on the effect of sulfur and nitrogen atomic dopants positioned at the center and near the edge of the GQD carbon backbone structure. According to formation energies, we evidence that doping is more favorable for nitrogen than sulfur, and that the near-edge doping is more favorable than center doping. Regarding the electronic properties, there is a clear shift to lower wavelength in the UV–Vis spectra when using the CAM-B3LYP exchange correlation functional, with respect to B3LYP functional for all the structures, showing a better concordance with experimental data. As a general trend, the major transition observed in the nitrogen doped system is situated at higher wavelength, while in the case of the sulfur doped system, the transition is located at lower wavelength when comparing with the undoped GQDs. This observation is also in good agreement with the experimental trend observed for nitrogen and sulfur-doped GQDs for which a redshift and blueshift in the UV–Vis absorption is typically observed respect to the undoped case, respectively. All of this justify the selected methodology for describing the electronic and optical properties of doped GQDs and provide additional insights to correlate with the optical properties observed experimentally.]]></dcterms:abstract>
