    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>The aim of this work was to study the effect of the sex and the smoking status on the pharmacokinetics and the bioequivalence assessment of a branded and a generic cyclosporine A microemulsion formulation in soft-gelatin capsule. Sixteen healthy volunteers (eight women and eight men) participated in a CyA bioequivalence study, with nine of the volunteers being smokers. Sandimmun Neoral (brand formulation; Reference) and Sigmasporin Microral (generic formulation; Test) were administered under fasting conditions. Pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated through non compartmental analysis. Bioequivalence was declared based on the 90% confidence intervals (90% CI) for the T/R ratio of the geometric means for each parameter. In vitro determination of the capsules opening time was performed in simulated gastric fluid without enzyme with USP Apparatus 2. The extent of absorption was similar between both products for all subjects or each sex-group. The absorption rate was similar for both products when considering all subjects, whereas a significant difference in the TMAX between the two products was observed for the male subjects only, which relates to its slower capsule opening time observed in vitro (12.4 versus 6.0 min). No differences were observed in women that could relate to their slower gastric emptying. Differences in drug exposure were observed between smokers and non-smokers. Sex- and smoke-related differences in the gastrointestinal transit should be considered when the on-set time would be determinant for the treatment success of a drug.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Although sex-related differences in gastrointestinal physiology have been vastly reported, its impact on drug oral<br />bioavailability and bioequivalence (product discrimination) is often ignored. On this work results from an<br />average bioequivalence study between tablets containing 600 mg of the antiretroviral efavirenz (EFV), carried<br />out with 14 healthy subjects (8 female and 6 men) in a randomized 2-period, 2-treatment crossover design,<br />are analyzed from a sex-based approach. Sequences were balanced within each sex group. Considering all<br />subjects, no differences were observed on EFV absorbed amount, as shown by the estimated 90CI of the AUC96<br />Test/Reference bioequivalence ratio (T/R): 0.950&ndash;1.05. However, results were not conclusive due to the 90CI<br />for CMAX T/R was 0.743&ndash;1.07. Over this parameter, a significant sex-by-formulation interaction was detected:<br />90CI CMAX T/R was 0.838&ndash;1.36 in women and 0.540&ndash;0.920 in men; with a 52% relative difference between<br />point estimates. Formulation differences were therefore evidenced only by male subjects. In vitro dissolution<br />and disintegration tests for both products were carried out in two aqueous media: A) SLS 0.25% and B) HCl/KCl<br />pH 1.2. T/R results for dissolution efficiency and tablet disintegration times of formulations in both A and B<br />media were highly correlated with CMAX T/R bioequivalence results observed in women and men respectively,<br />showing that a dissimilar gastrointestinal environment between sexes affected EFV oral absorption. This work<br />shows how sex-by-formulation interaction can affect bioequivalence conclusions. Sex effect on product discrimination<br />should be specially disclosed in bioequivalence studies, mainly for drugs aimed to be given to both sexes.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Background: The goal of this study was to develop an in vivo-in vitro (IVIV) correlation, both in men and women, which allows constructing a model to predict bioequivalence assessments for drugs with narrow absorption windows. Besides, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic equivalences were also investigated. Furosemide was chosen as a prototype. Methods: Twelve healthy Caucasian volunteers (8 women and 4 men) participated in a relative bioavailability study. Two oral formulations [Lasix&reg; (Reference, R) and Furosemide EFA&reg; (Test, T)] were administered under fasting conditions. Urinary excretion of unchanged drug (PK), and of chloride, sodium and potassium (PD) wasmonitored throughout time. PK and PD parameters were calculated from each respective excretion rate versus time curve. In vitro dissolution testing of both formulations was carried out using the USP apparatus 2 and 4 with fixed and variable dissolution media. Results: T and R could be considered bioequivalent since the 90% confidence intervals for the T/R ratio of geometric means for the area under the urinary drug excretion rate versus time curve and for the maximum excretion rate were within the 0.80-1.25 bioequivalence interval. However, T had faster initial absorption and higher levels in women, while R displayed such characteristics in men. Closer IVIV correlations in women were obtained when apparatus 4 with variable biorelevant dissolution media were used [going from fasting state simulated gastric fluid to fasting state simulated intestinal fluid]. Since R had faster disintegration time than T, a shorter stay of R under gastric conditions was required in order to obtain a good IVIV correlation in men. Saluretic effect displayed a typical clockwise hysteresis loop for the PKPD correlation assessed through chloride-versus-furosemide urinary excretion rates. Even though a higher amount of furosemide was excreted with the urine in men, differences in the excretion of electrolytes between sexes were almost negligible. Conclusions: Sex-differences in the gastrointestinal transit of formulations, under fasting conditions, determined the extent and the rate of furosemide absorption. The prolongation of the absorption process by mean of slowing the gastric emptying would make the formulation more effective. The USP-4 apparatus with variable dissolution media was able to discriminate the formulations even between sexes, becoming a promissory in vitro dissolution testing to predict bioequivalence.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The arctiid moth Utetheisa ornatrix is protected against predation by pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) that it sequesters as a larva from its food plant. Earlier work had shown that males transmit PA to the female with the sperm package and that the female bestows part of this gift on the eggs, protecting these against predation as a result. We now show that the female herself derives protection from the gift. Females deficient in PA are vulnerable to predation from spiders (Lycosa ceratiola and Nephila clavipes). If mated with a PA-laden male, the females become unacceptable as prey. The effect takes hold promptly and endures; females are unacceptable to spiders virtually from the moment they uncouple from the male and remain unacceptable as they age. Chemical data showed that the female allocates the received PA quickly to all body parts. We predict that other instances will be found of female insects being rendered invulnerable by receipt of sexually transmitted chemicals.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Background: Aptamers represent an emerging class of oligonucleotides that have the ability to bind ligands with high affinity. Sgc8-c aptamer recognizes PTK7, a member of the catalytically defective receptor protein tyrosine kinase family that is upregulated in various cancers, including hemato-oncological malignancies. Herein, an Sgc8-c-NOTA-radiolabeled probe was prepared for theranostic purpose. Materials and Methods: In this work, an Sgc8-c-radiolabeled probe against PTK7 was prepared, and biological evaluations&mdash;pharmacokinetic studies, biodistribution analysis, and in vivo molecular imaging&mdash;were performed. To obtain the radiolabeled probe, a modified 5&prime;-amino-derivative of the Sgc8-c aptamer was bound to the metal chelator NOTA, and subsequently labeled with 67Ga with high yield and radiochemical purity. The precursor, Sgc8-c-NOTA, the radio probe Sgc8-c-NOTA-67Ga, and its nonradioactive complex, Sgc8-c-NOTA-69/71Ga, were purified by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography and characterized by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The binding ability of Sgc8-c-NOTA-67Ga was studied in vitro against purified PTK7 receptor. In addition, the binding was also evidenced against the hemato-oncological A20 cell line, derived from B lymphocytes, and the corresponding A20-green fluorescent protein (GFP)-transfected cells. The proof of concept was performed on A20-GFP tumor-bearing mice, in which the biodistribution of the radiolabeled probe was evaluated through imaging, using X-ray, fluorescence, and &gamma; modalities. The specific uptake of the probe was confirmed by blocking with the Sgc8-c aptamer in an in vivo competition assay. Results: The biodistribution results showed considerable uptake in tumor since 2&thinsp;h, with highest at 48&thinsp;h postinjection. However, the blood and muscle ID/g (injected dose per gram of tissue) activities were decreasing with time and tumor/no-target ratios increasing to 20 at 24&thinsp;h postinjection.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In this study three different approaches&mdash;acceptability limit, failure cut-off point methodology, and survival analysis&mdash;to estimate the sensory shelf life of brown pan bread elaborated with different enzymes using consumer data were compared. The study was carried out in Spain and Uruguay independently, where four batches of bread were produced, with the same base formulation, one without enzyme, the others with the addition of maltogenic amylase, xylanase, and a mixture of both. The results showed that for Uruguayan consumers the mixture of enzymes provided better results in extending shelf life than the addition of amylase alone. For the Spanish consumers only the addition of amylase provided the desired results, and for consumers of both countries the use of xylanase did not extend the shelf life of bread. Among the methodologies used for the estimation, survival analysis provided the most adequate predictions considering consumer rejection of the product. Hedonic scales do not always reflect consumer behaviour when deciding whether to accept or reject a certain product for its consumption.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[T wo monovarietal extra virgin olive oils (Arbequina and Coratina), produced in Uruguay, were studied over a period of 12 months storage in amber bottles at 30 &ordm;C. P eroxide index, K 232 , K 270 , ∆K, OSI induction time did not exceed the maximum limits set by the International Olive Council (IOC ) during the entire period. However, the content of ethyl esters increase d with storage time and it is in relation with the shelf life. The International Olive Council (IOC) establishes the limits in the content of ethyl esters &le; 35 ppm. T he Coratina oil ceased to be extra virgin quality after 6 months of storage due to its content of ethyl esters (46 ppm), and the Arbequina oil after 9 mo nths (52 ppm). Taking into consideration their content of ethyl esters, both the Arbequina and Coratina oils showed a very short shelf life less than six months.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Small compounds cannot bind simultaneously to two antibodies, and thus, their immunodetection is limited to competitive formats in which the analyte is indirectly quantitated by measuring the unoccupied antibody binding sites using a competing reporter. This limitation can be circumvented by using phage-borne peptides selected for their ability to specifically react with the analyte&ndash;antibody immunocomplex, which allows the detection of these small molecules in a noncompetitive format (PHAIA) with increased sensitivity and a positive readout. In an effort to find substitutes for the phage particles in PHAIA, we explore the use of the B subunit of the Shiga-like toxin of Escherichia coli, also known as verotoxin (VTX), as a scaffold for multivalent display of anti-immunocomplex peptides. Using the herbicides molinate and clomazone as model compounds, we built peptide&ndash;VTX recombinant chimeras that were produced in the periplasmic space of E. coli as soluble pentamers, as confirmed by multiangle light scattering analysis. These multivalent constructs, which we termed nanopeptamers, were conjugated to a tracer enzyme and used to detect the herbicide&ndash;antibody complex in an ELISA format. The VTX&ndash;nanopeptamer assays performed with over a 10-fold increased sensitivity and excellent recovery from spiked surface and mineral water samples. The carbon black-labeled peptide&ndash;VTX nanopeptamers showed great potential for the development of a lateral-flow test for small molecules with a visual positive readout that allowed the detection of up to 2.5 ng/mL of clomazone.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Here, we report a joint experimental and theoretical study using molecular dynamics calculations focusing on short- and long-range structure correlations with ionic transport near the glass transition for lithium-ion polyacrylonitrile-<br />based electrolytes using DMSO as plasticizer. The presence of subtle modifications of the polymeric structural features near the glass transition (Tg) is rarely reported in the literature and could be relevant to study free volume in polymer-based electrolytes. Our in-situ small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis at different temperatures evidence an increment of free volume and partial loss of long-range coherence between polyacrylonitrile neighbor chains just above Tg in strong correlation with an Arrhenius behavior crossover observed<br />for the ionic transport in these polyacrylonitrile-based electrolytes. Advancing the understanding of lithium-ion<br />conductivity Arrhenius behavior for polymeric electrolytes with Tg slightly above room temperature could be of great relevance due to the overlap with the operating temperature range of lithium-ion batteries.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Emotion word questionnaires remain dominant in food-related emotion research despite acknowledged limitations. Emoji questionnaires can overcome some of these limitations but are not yet regarded as a strong alternative to emotion word questionnaires. We believe they have the potential to earn this right and use this invited opinion piece to explain why. Following a brief introduction about emoji, advantages of emoji questionnaires are summarised: &ndash; enhanced ecological validity, familiarity and cross-culturally shared meanings. We then address concerns that hinder uptake of emoji questionnaires, including emoji meanings/interpretations, appropriateness for older consumers and ability to represent emotional arousal (activation to deactivation). Finally, we offer suggestions for how to accelerate the uptake of emoji questionnaires in sensory and consumer science, which include: i) more applied studies using emoji questionnaires, ii) establishing emoji meanings in the context of eating of drinking, iii) adopting open-ended question formats, iv) comparing emoji and emotion word questionnaires, and v) establishing guidelines for emoji questionnaires. An important spill-over benefit of research to develop emoji questionnaires is that it exposes the lack of similar research for emotion word questionnaires. We encourage colleagues in the field to engage in the task of conducting needed methodological research on emoji and emotion words alike.

The analytical greenness metric (AGREE) and its variant for sample preparation (AGREEprep) cover different aspects that contribute to the environmental sustainability of sample preparation. White Analytical Chemistry (WAC) considers not only environmental aspects but also analytical and practical aspects with a holistic vision based on a Red-Green-Blue color model. A case study is presented to assess the green and white profile of a method based on ultrasoundassisted extraction and determination of Mn and Fe in beef using microwave-induced plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (MP AES). The method was validated and resulted simple, fast without external heating using diluted acids. It was concluded that we should think in green sample preparation with the AGREEprep tool, as well as in white holistic assessments (WAC) as both constitute complementary tools.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Most Trypanosoma cruzi O-glycans are linked to Thr/Ser residues via N-acetylglucosamine. We report that the mucin-type carcinoma-associated sialyl-Tn antigen (NeuAc-GalNAc-O-Ser/Thr) is expressed by T. cruzi. A specific MAb allowed us to localize the antigen on the surface of epimastigotes and to identify reactive components in parasite lysates (32, 60, and 94 kDa). In addition, ppGalNAc-T activity was characterized in epimastigotes, and direct evidence was obtained for the in vitro incorporation of GalNAc to a synthetic peptide derived from a T. cruzi mucin. These results add an as yet unknown complexity to the pathways of O-glycan biosynthesis in this protozoan parasite.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The aim of the present work was to explore the effect of the inclusion of nutritional warnings on consumer associations with labels of ultra-processed products. The study was conducted in Uruguay at two points in time, before and after the compulsory implementation of nutritional warnings. A total of 163 participants evaluated three labels of ultra-processed products using a word association task. In the first evaluation (T1), performed 9 months before the entry into force of nutritional warnings, labels were presented without warnings. Nine months later (15 days after the entry into force of the policy), participants evaluated the labels with warnings again (T2). Data were analyzed using content analysis. At T1, when labels were presented without nutritional warnings, responses to the word association task were related to a description of the product category, expected sensory characteristics of the products, brand names, liking and eating occasions. However, when the labels were presented with the warnings at T2, a significant increase in the frequency of mention of responses was observed within the categories Excessive content of sugar/fat/sodium, Not healthy, Diseases and negative health conditions, Rejection to consume, and Unexpected information. Results from the present work suggest that immediately after their implementation, nutritional warnings cause a salience bias that make excessive nutrient content and its negative health consequences more salient in consumers&rsquo; minds, especially in the case of products with a particular health-related connotation.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>The objective of the present studywas to evaluate children's hedonic sensitivity to sugar reduction in three dairy products: vanilla milk desserts, chocolate-flavoured milk, and vanilla yoghurt. For each product, a regular sample and five samples with different reduction in added-sugar content were formulated. The regular sample contained the sugar content of commercial products available in the marketplace. The<br />reduction in added-sugar content ranged between 10.0 and 41.0%. A total of 126 children (8e13 years old) participated in the study. An A-not A test was used to evaluate children's hedonic sensitivity to sugar reduction. Sugar reductions up to 27% in chocolate flavoured milk and vanilla yoghurt, and up to 19% in vanilla milk desserts, did not cause significant changes in children's hedonic reaction.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The heteroatom doping of graphene is a useful method to amplify the outstanding properties of graphene. However, it is difficult to control the disposition of the dopants. By means of first-principles calculations, we show that the substrate-induced doping of epitaxial graphene leads to the formation of silicon doped graphene with a precise location of the dopants in the valley regions between crests. According to our results, in the valleys silicon dopants greatly prefer to replace the carbon atoms of the buffer layer which are bonded to the substrate by a large amount of energy. This selective doping suggests that a siligraphene layer in the g-SiC3 form would be an excellent model for a buffer layer grown on nanometer-sized areas of SiC, thus paving the way to the synthesis of a new two-dimensional material. We predict a stable antiferromagnetical (AF) ordering that behaves electronically as a semiconductor, degenerated with the highest ferromagnetic configuration of the system. A net magnetic moment of 0.65 &mu;B per Si dangling bond was found for both the AF and the most stable ferromagnetic state of the SiC-siligraphene system. Finally, we demonstrate that quasi-free-standing epitaxial siligraphene layers on 6H-SiC(0001) could be obtained by the intercalation of argon atoms. We expect that this work can motivate new experimental studies pursuing the synthesis of SiC3 siligraphene.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A new method for the determination of silicon in Portland cement, based on the generation of volatile species without sample pre-treatment, is proposed. The method reduces operational complexity and time without loss of precision and with similar accuracy as the current methods. It employs microwave-assisted (domestic microwave oven) digestion to produce volatile silicon fluorides by reaction of the sample with a fluorinated salt (CaF2) in the presence of H2SO4 (98% w/w), using a Teflon&reg; (PFA) reactor. The volatile fluorides are flushed out by a dry nitrogen stream and collected in 0.3 mol l&minus;1 NaOH solution where they dissolve. Silicon is determined in this solution by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The recoveries are between 98 and 102%, and the precision is better than 2.5% relative standard deviation (R.S.D).]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The scope of this study included the preparation of silver nanoforms with high antimicrobial efficacy, low cost, and ease of application. The term 'silver nanoforms' refers to silver located on the amorphous or crystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2). Silver nanoforms may be used as an alternative to antibiotics in killing bacteria. Pure and silver-incorporated titanium (used as a carrier) was prepared using the sol-gel-modified method. Physical and chemical properties of the samples were described, and the antibacterial activity was indicated using the following strains of bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae (ESKAPE pathogens), and Escherichia coli. The results have shown that the antibacterial activity of silver nanoforms with amorphous TiO2 is much better than that in the samples based on anatase (crystalline TiO2). The sensitivity of the tested bacteria to silver nanoforms depends on physical and chemical properties of the nanoforms and individual characteristics of the bacteria. For the first time, significant participation of amorphous TiO2 in antibacterial compounds has been described through this study.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:title><![CDATA[<strong>Simaroubaceae and Picramniaceae as potential sources of botanical pesticides</strong>]]></dcterms:title>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Prospection for new sources of botanical pesticides has shown a revival in the last decades due not only to the fast development of resistance among different pests around the world but also by the need to use less eco-toxic products to control etiological agents of different pest-related problems found in agro-production. In this work, extracts from members of the families Simaroubaceae (Ailanthus altissima, Castela coccinea and Picrasma crenata) and Picramniaceae (Alvaradoa subovata and Picramnia sellowii) were evaluated for their toxicity against the cattle tick and for their antifeedant activity against insects. At the tested doses, none of the extracts exhibited a good toxicity against larvae of the common cattle tick. On the other hand, antifeedant activity was detected in various extracts. Foliage consumption was completely deterred in adults of the specialist Epilachna paenulata in the cases of the C. coccinea leaf and wood extracts and P. crenata wood extract. For larvae of the generalist Spodoptera frugiperda antifeedant effects were also detected, although in a lesser extent. Phytochemical analyses of the extracts showed the presence of alkaloids in P. crenata (including canthin-6-one) and in C. coccinea. Besides, GC/MS analyses of the wood extract from C. coccinea showed the presence of several steroids (ergot 5-en-3-ol-acetate, stigmastan-3,5 diene and stigmasta-3,5dien-7-one). Anthraquinones (emodin and chrysophanol) as well as chlorogenic acid were detected in the cases of A. subovata and P. sellowii extracts. The differences in deterrent activity could not be atributed to differences in the HPLC chemical profiles of the different extracts]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A validated analytical method for the multiresidue analysis of 40 organophosphate pesticides (OPs) and conversion products in raw wool has been developed. The method is based on the selective microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) of raw wool with acetonitrile and analysis of extracts by gas chromatography-flame photometric detector. The optimum MAE conditions were 20 min duration at 80 C with 30 mL of acetonitrile per gram of wool. A validation study was performed according to the European SANCO guidelines 10684/2009. Limits of detection and quantification for all pesticides tested were from 0.01 to 0.2 mg/kg and from 0.2 to 1.0 mg/kg, respectively. The average recoveries of pesticides spiked at different levels were in the range of 70-120% with relative standard deviations of e20%. The extraction performance was compared to the one obtained with a reference Soxhlet extraction. The method was also applied in the analysis of real wool (after field application) samples.]]></dcterms:abstract>
