<dcterms:abstract>Technetium-99m has a rich coordination chemistry that offers many possibilities in terms of oxidation states and donor atom sets. Modifications in the structure of the technetium complexes could be very useful for fine tuning the physicochemical and biological properties of potential 99mTc radiopharmaceuticals. However, systematic study of the influence of the labelling strategy on the “in vitro” and “in vivo” behaviour is necessary for a rational design of radiopharmaceuticals. Herein we present a review of the influence of the Tc complexes’ molecular structure on the biodistribution and the interaction with the biological target of potential nitroimidazolic hypoxia imaging radiopharmaceuticals presented in the literature from 2010 to the present. Comparison with the gold standard [18F]Fluoromisonidazole (FMISO) is also presented</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>
Nanomedicine is a highly demanded discipline. Liposomes have seen an increased attention due to their physicochemical properties that allow them to act as nanocarriers of drugs and also of radioisotopes that can be used to diagnose and treat cancer. In order to obtain a novel permeability cancer imaging agent based on 99mTc-labeled liposomes, we describe microwave-assisted synthesis of stearyl 6 (benzylidenehydrazinyl) nicotinamide lipid, which was included in two formulations: nanometric hydrazinonicotinic acid (HYNIC) liposome and its PEGylated coated analogue, HYNIC-PEG liposome. Radiolabeling with 99mTc via stearyl 6-(benzylidenehydrazinyl) nicotinamide was found to
be easy, reproducible, and stable, revealing high radiochemical purity (94 ± 1.7%) for both liposomal formulations. Biodistribution at 4 h and 24 h and scintigraphic images at 4 h were performed in normal and melanoma-bearing C57BL/6 mice. Biodistribution studies at 4 h showed tumor uptake of 99mTc-HYNIC liposome and 99mTc-HYNIC-PEG liposome (1.1 ±
0.6 and 2.5 ± 0.4, respectively) and also at 24 h p.i. (1.8 ± 0.5 and 3.0 ± 1.1, respectively). Scintigraphic images showed appreciable tumor uptake in melanoma tumor–bearing mice
with both liposomal formulations. Our results show that 99mTc stearyl 6-(benzylidenehydrazinyl) nicotinamide liposomes can be used as diagnostic noninvasive in vivo tumor-targeting agents capable of evaluating tumor permeability and development who can be used in personalized chemotherapy planning.
</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The possibility of using 99mTc-labelled nucleotides as tumour seeking agents has been proposed by different research groups. We have recently reported the preparation of a 99mTc-ADP complex with a high radiochemical purity (> 95%), good in vitro and in vivo stability and promising biodistribution results when injected in mice bearing spontaneous mammary adenocarcinomas. Here we report the results of further investigations in animals with spontaneous neoplastic processes, including whole-body autoradiography in mice (20 minutes and 60 minutes post injection) and gamma-camera imaging studies in Wistar rats. Dynamic studies (up to 45 minutes) and static images (up to 18 hours) were acquired to determine the pharmacokinetics of 99mTc-ADP and the tumour/muscle and tumour/blood ratios. Blood-pool studies were also performed as a control. Tumours were visualized by autoradiography as was to be expected from the biodistribution studies. Dynamic studies showed a rapid blood clearance and a behaviour that fitted to a tricompartimental model. Radioactivity was rapidly taken up by the kidneys and excreted in the urine. No evidence of in vivo instability of the complex was observed. Tumour uptake reached the maximum values after 20 minutes post-injection. Tumour/blood and tumour/muscle ratios improved over time, enhancing tumour visualization. The best images were obtained after 3 hours post injection. In summary, our studies suggest that 99mTc-ADP is a promising radiopharmaceutical for tumour diagnosis.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>
Background: Sialic acids are widely distributed in nature and have biological relevance owing to their varied structural and functional roles. Immobilized neuraminidase can selectively remove terminal N-acetyl neuraminic acid from glycoproteins without altering the protein backbone while it can be easily removed from the reaction mixture avoiding sample contamination. This enables the evaluation of changes in glycoprotein performance upon desialylation.

Methods: Neuraminidase was immobilized onto agarose activated with cyanate ester groups and further used for
desialylation of model glycoproteins, a lysate from tumour cells and tumour cells. Desialylation process was analysed by lectin binding assay, determination of sialyl-Tn or flow cytometry.

Results: Clostridium perfringens neuraminidase was immobilized with 91 % yield and expressed activity yield was
of 41%. It was effective in the desialylation of bovine fetal serum fetuin, bovine lactoferrin and ovine submaxilar mucin. A decrease in sialic-specific SNA lectin recognition of 83% and 53 % was observed for fetuin and lactoferrin with a concomitant increase in galactose specific ECA and PNA lectin recognition. Likewise, a decrease in the recognition of a specific antibody (82%) upon mucin desialylation was observed. Moreover, desialylation of aprotein lysate from the sialic acid-rich cell line TA3/Ha was also possible leading to a decrease in 47 % in SNA recognition. Immobilized neuraminidase kept 100% of its initial activity upon five desialylation cycles.

Conclusions: Immobilized neuraminidase is an interesting as well as a robust biotechnological tool for enzymatic
desialylation purposes.

General significance: Immobilized neuraminidase would contribute to understand the role of sialic acid in biological processes.
</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Objective Nutritional warnings have recently been suggested as a simplified front-of-pack nutrition labelling scheme to facilitate citizens’ ability to identify unhealthful products and discourage their consumption. However, citizens’ perspective on this policy is still under-researched. The objective of the present work was to study how citizens perceive nutritional warnings and to evaluate public support of this policy, with the goal of deriving recommendations for the design of policy measures accompanying the introduction of nutritional warnings. Design An online survey with 1416 Uruguayan citizens, aged 18–75 years, 61 % female, was conducted. Participants had to answer a series of questions (open-ended and multiple-choice) related to their perception of warnings as a front-of-package nutrition labelling scheme. Results Participants showed a positive attitude towards nutritional warnings, which were regarded as easy to understand and to identify on food packages. The majority of respondents emphasized that they would take nutritional warnings into account when making their food choices, stating that they would allow them to make informed choices and, consequently, to increase the quality of their diet and their health status. Health motivation appeared as a crucial driver for taking nutritional warnings into consideration. Conclusions A high level of public support for nutritional warnings was observed. Responses can be used to derive a range of recommendations for a policy mix that should synergistically support the introduction of nutritional warnings and encourage citizens to take them into account when making their food purchases.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The production of several oxygenated derivatives of limonene was carried out by using orange oil and molecular oxygen as the sole initial reactants under solvent-free conditions. Palladium–copper supported on carbon and hydrotalcite-like compounds displayed good catalytic properties to accelerate autoxidation reactions of limonene yielding a mixture of the different oxygenated derivatives, mainly 1,2- and 8,9-epoxylimonene, 1,2,8,9-diepoxylimonene, carveol and carvone. Palladium supported on copper–magnesium–aluminium hydrotalcite displayed the best properties due to its higher catalytic activity and lifetime. The pelletized form of these catalysts can be easily recovered and reused. A reactor design combining recirculation and oxygen bubbling through a catalytic bed of the pelletized catalyst produced the highest reaction rate. Vacuum distillation of the final product mixture allowed easy separation of the 1,2/8,9-limonene epoxides. The other required compounds, mainly carveol and carvone, were not completely separated and remained together with the other oxygenated products, such as the di-epoxylimonene isomers.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The environmental impact of rice agriculture is poorly studied in developing countries, mainly due to limitations of the analytical capacity. Here, we report the development of a clomazone enzymelinked immunosorbent assay as a fast and cost-effective tool to monitor the dissipation of this herbicide along the harvest. Antibodies were prepared using different strategies of hapten conjugation, and the best hapten/antibody pair was selected. It proved to be a reliable tool to measure the herbicide in the 2.0-20 ng/mL range in field samples, with excellent correlation with highperformance liquid chromatography results. The assay was used to study the dissipation of the herbicide in the floodwater of experimental rice paddies in Uruguay. Large differences in the residual amounts of herbicide were observed depending on the flooding practices. Because of its robustness and simplicity, the assay may be useful to delineate and monitor management practices that can contribute to minimizing the release of the herbicide in the environment.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>We compared chemical profiles and in vitro biological activity of extracts obtained through maceration with ethanol or supercritical fluid extraction with CO2 (scCO2), from two different cannabis inflorescences chemotypes, one with high total tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other with high total cannabidiol (CBD) content. scCO2 was performed to obtain extracts with highest total THC and CBD recovery using ethanol as a co-solvent. In addition, a short maceration with ethanol was performed for both chemotypes. Cannabinoid and terpene composition of the extracts were determined using chromatographic and spectroscopic methods, and their cytotoxicity and cell proliferation effects were evaluated in vitro using HT-29 colon adenocarcinoma cell line. In vitro biological activity confirmed that cannabis extracts from both chemotypes have anti-proliferative activity but the scCO2 extract from high total THC chemotype was more cytotoxic. These results underscore the importance of chemotype and extraction method selection in the preparation of cannabis extracts for different therapeutic applications.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Herein, we have employed dispersion corrected density functional theory to study the performance of modified subphthalocyanines and dibenzo[a,g]corannulenes as fullerene receptors. Analysis of the interaction energies and structures of the catchers revealed that subphthalocyanines display excellent ball–socket interactions with C60 and C70. However, dibenzo[a,g]corannulene showed an excellent fit only with C70, as indicated by recent experimental results. Functionalization of subphthalocyanines with long thioalkyl chains increases the interaction energies between receptors and fullerenes. Yet, the effect on the association constant is negligible, and in some cases it can be even harmful, because the long alkyl chains introduce large entropic penalties, which are translated into a small improvement of the free energy changes. We propose a new subphthalocyanine based receptor which bears three 1,4-dithino groups at the peripheral region. The new host has a strong affinity towards C60 and C70, as indicated by theoretical calculations, which showed a large change in free energy when the above-mentioned modification is considered. In spite of the fact that long alkyl chains seem not to be useful in improving the binding affinity of several receptors, we have found that the addition of small ethyl chains to dibenzo[a,g]corannulene increases the affinity of the bowl towards fullerenes. Nevertheless, new functional groups must be attached in places where the stacking interaction between the host and the guest is barely affected; otherwise the loss of π stacking should be compensated by the new functional groups.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Product insights beyond hedonic responses are increasingly sought and include emotional associations. Various word-based questionnaires for direct measurement exist and an emoji variant was recently proposed. Herein, emotion words are replaced with emoji conveying a range of emotions. Further assessment of emoji questionnaires is needed to establish their relevance in food-related consumer research. Methodological research contributes hereto and in the present research the effects of question wording and response format are considered. Specifically, a web study was conducted with Chinese consumers (n=750) using four seafood names as stimuli (mussels, lobster, squid and abalone). Emotional associations were elicited using 33 facial emoji. Explicit reference to "how would you feel?" in the question wording changed product emoji profiles minimally. Consumers selected only a few emoji per stimulus when using CATA (check-all-that-apply) questions, and layout of the CATA question had only a small impact on responses. A comparison of CATA questions with forced yes/no questions and RATA (rate-all-that-apply) questions revealed an increase in frequency of emoji use for yes/no questions, but not a corresponding improvement in sample discrimination. For the stimuli in this research, which elicited similar emotional associations, RATA was probably the best methodological choice, with 8.5 emoji being used per stimulus, on average, and increased sample discrimination relative to CATA (12% vs. 6-8%). The research provided additional support for the potential of emoji surveys as a method for measurement of emotional associations to foods and beverages and began contributing to development of guidelines for implementation.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Consumer‐based methods for sensory product characterization continue to gain popularity. Considering that past research is mostly limited to cases where samples are sensorially simple or markedly different, the aim of this study was to compare descriptive analysis (DA) by trained assessors with product characterizations from consumers using rate‐all‐that‐apply (RATA) questions using samples that can be regarded as quite similar or quite complex. The results from three studies showed that sample differentiation was higher in DA than RATA and that information about sample similarities and differences tended to be dissimilar. The exception was Study 1 where samples were least complex. The discrepancy between the two types of panels was least evident for appearance and color attributes and basic tastes (sweet, sour, and salty), and in these instances, the correlation between attribute intensities was clearly linear (R² = 0.46). The discrepancy was highest for complex sensory terms and terms relating to specific odors/flavors. While past research suggests that it may be possible to improve the agreement between the two methods by providing consumers with short training (samples, terms, and rating scale), practitioners should consider that training of consumers may reduce the ecological validity of their responses. Practical applications Characterization of the properties of products is a cornerstone activity for sensory professionals, and to achieve this task, several methods are available. This study contributes insight regarding the choice of descriptive analysis (DA) with trained assessors or rate‐all‐that‐apply (RATA) questions with consumers. If the products are not sensorially complex, then product characterization by consumers provide the same insights as DA. However, this study shows that when samples are sensorially complex and/or similar, RATA is less discriminative than DA and provides information about sample similarities and differences that is not the same as that generated by DA. Practitioners are advised to select sensory description methodology based on the objectives of their research, and when an understanding of consumers' perceptions of products is desired, A consumer‐based methodology should be used</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) assay is an established procedure used to measure antioxidant content. Recently, the CUPRAC assay was adapted for use in post column derivatisation coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-PCD). In prior works reported in the literature, CUPRAC HPLC-PCD assays used large post column mixing coils leading to a deterioration in the observed separation efficiency. In this work we used the CUPRAC PCD assay with reaction flow (RF) chromatography. No reaction loop was required, thus preserving the efficiency of the separation. We subsequently compared the performance of the CUPRAC assay to that of an antioxidant assay that we have previously converted to RF chromatography, namely the ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) assay, both in RF mode. The relative response factor with respect to trolox was measured for both RF assays via the separation of a standard mixture of 16 compounds. Sample analysis of coffee and green tea via both RF assays was used to compare their ability to screen for bioactive candidates in complex natural products. In general, the CUPRAC assay is recommended as the RF PCD methodology of choice as it provided a higher level of performance compared to the FRAP assay, demonstrating less baseline noise interference, greater sensitivity, wider linear dynamic range and better assay precision.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>In recent years high sodium intake has raised growing concern worldwide. A widespread reduction of salt concentration in processed foods has been claimed as one of the most effective strategies to achieve a short-term impact on global health. However, one of the major challenges in reducing salt in food products is its potential negative impact on consumer perception. For this reason, gradual salt reduction has been recommended. In this context, the aim of the present work was to present a consumer-based approach to salt reduction, using bread as case study. Two consumer studies with a total of 303 consumers were carried out. In the first study, four sequential difference thresholds were determined through paired-comparison tests, starting at a salt concentration of 2%. In the second study, 99 consumers performed a two-bite evaluation of their sensory and hedonic perception of five bread samples: a control bread containing 2% salt and four samples with reduced salt content according to the difference thresholds determined in the first study. Survival analysis was used to determine average difference thresholds, which ranged from 9.4% to 14.3% of the salt concentration of the control bread. Results showed that salt concentration significantly influenced consumer overall liking of the bread samples. However, large heterogeneity was found in consumer hedonic reaction towards salt reduction: two groups of consumers with different preference and hedonic sensitivity to salt reduction were found. Results from the present work confirm that cumulative series of small salt reductions may be a feasible strategy for reducing the sodium content of bread without affecting consumer hedonic perception and stress the importance of considering consumer perception in the design of gradual salt reduction programmes.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The aim of the present research was to explore consumers' conceptualization of feeling good in relation to food and beverages from a cross-cultural perspective. Participants from 14 countries across 5 continents and covering 10 languages (N = 8325) responded to an online survey including word association and free listing tasks related to feeling good in the context of food and beverages. Results were analyzed using inductive coding: a list of main codes was generated in English for each of the tasks, after which native speakers for each language coded the responses. Codes were grouped into categories reflecting common themes from which eight dimensions were identified. Results showed that in the context of foods and beverages, feeling good was mainly associated with specific foods and sensory and hedonic properties. Across the 14 countries, ‘Sweet and fat food’, ‘Fruit and vegetables’, and ‘Protein food’ were the three food categories most associated with feeling good. Emotional aspects of food consumption (‘Taste good’ and emotions) were also relevant. Health and nutrition-related aspects were more relevant for consumers when they were asked to think about how foods and beverages would make them feel good in the future. In other words, food-related feeling good seems to be mainly driven by sensory pleasure at present, but it is also related to nutrition and health in the future. Differences in the strength of the associations between feeling good and the identified categories were found between countries, in line with the existence of cultural differences in food habits, as well as in the importance people attach to the characteristics of foods and beverages. Results from the present work provide insights on the impact of eating and drinking on feeling good in terms of emotional, physical and social aspects, and increase knowledge about the way food and drink can contribute to general well-being.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>
BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated the association between low-level arsenic (As) exposure and cognitive performance among children.

OBJECTIVES: In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the association between low-level As exposure and cognitive performance among 5-8 year-old children in Montevideo, and tested effect modification by As methylation capacity and children's dietary folate intake.

METHODS: We measured total urinary As (UAs) concentrations and the proportion of monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) in the urine of 328 children. Seven subtests of the standardized Woodcock-Muñoz cognitive battery were used to assess cognitive performance, from which, the general intellectual abilities (GIA) score was derived. Total folate intake was estimated from two 24-h dietary recalls. Linear regression analyses were performed. Effect modification was assessed by stratifying at the median %MMA value and tertiles of total folate intake calculated as micrograms (µg) of dietary folate equivalents (dfe). RESULTS: The median UAs was 11.9 µg/l (range = 1.4-93.9), mean folate intake was 337.4 (SD = 123.3) µg dfe, and median %MMA was 9.42 (range = 2.6-24.8). There was no association between UAs and cognitive abilities, and no consistent effect modification by %MMA. UAs was associated inversely with concept formation, and positively with cognitive efficiency and numbers reversed subtest in the lowest folate intake tertile; UAs was also positively associated with sound integration in the second tertile and concept formation in the highest tertile of folate intake. There was no consistent pattern of effect modification by %MMA or folate intake.

CONCLUSION: There was no association between low-level As exposure and general cognitive abilities.
</dcterms:abstract>
