    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Background and Objectives Ketoprofen, a potent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is clinically administered as a racemic mixture. One of the possible metabolism routes of ketoprofen is the inversion of the R- to S-enantiomer in the gastrointestinal tract. Ketoprofen, as a weak acid drug, might undergo recirculation through pancreatic/intestinal juices. The aim of the work was to investigate if a plasma-gastrointestinal tract recirculation of ketoprofen could explain its R-to-S chiral inversion after the oral administration of two modified-release formulations: a gastro-resistant delayed-release tablet (Reference) and an extended-release-plus-immediate-release bilayer tablet (Test). Methods Sixteen healthy Caucasian volunteers (eight women and eight men) participated in a ketoprofen bioequivalence study. Both formulations were administered with and without food. In both cases, standard meals were given throughout the experiment. R- and S-enantiomers were measured separately using a validated HPLC&ndash;UV chiral method. Mean concentration&ndash;time profiles of ketoprofen enantiomers in plasma were obtained for men and women. Area under the plasma concentration&ndash;time curve, maximum ketoprofen plasma concentration, and time-to-peak were also computed for both isomers, both modes of administration, and both sexes. S/R concentration ratio was assessed as an indicator of enantiomer chiral inversion rate. Results Differences in the pharmacokinetics of S- and R-ketoprofen enantiomers were found after the Test administration. S-Ketoprofen presented a lower plasma exposure compared to R-enantiomer. However, the S/R concentration ratio increased 1 h (in men) and 2 h (in women) after meal intakes. This was related to pancreatic and/or intestinal and/or biliary secretions of the drug, followed by reabsorption and conversion of the R- to the S-isomer. The lower intestinal pH reported for men would lead to a higher oral bioavailability of the Test formulation and a higher reabsorption of both ketoprofen isomers in this sex. Hence, a higher rise of the S/R concentration ratio could be observed in men. No significant differences between isomers exposure were detected in both sexes after the Reference administration. Different lag times were observed after fed and fasting administration of this formulation; however, drug absorption coincided with food ingestion. Then, drug recirculation affected the S/R ratio from the beginning of drug exposure, minimizing the difference between isomers disposition. Conclusions R-to-S conversion rate could be mainly associated with several passages of the drug through the intestinal mucosa. The concentration&ndash;time profiles of ketoprofen in plasma after the administration of both formulations evidenced R-to-S conversion of recirculating drug following meal intakes.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The 3-oxygenated-cis-dialkyl-2,5-substituted tetrahydrofuran system, present in several natural products, was prepared with good selectivity by acidic cyclization of 5-alkene-1,2,4-triol derivatives. The starting alkenol was obtained in few steps from a chiral cis-diol resulting from microbial oxidation of bromobenzene. The study of the cyclization allowed the rationalization of all experimental results by assuming a complete ionization at the allylic position and a model close to the one proposed by Labelle for homoallylic induction in five-membered ring closures.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A bacterial strain (Chol-1ST) that is able to oxidize cholesterol to CO2 and reduce nitrate to dinitrogen was enriched and isolated from an upflow sludge bed (USB) anoxic reactor that treats sanitary landfill leachate from the city of Montevideo, Uruguay. Cells of strain Chol-1ST were Gram-negative, rod-shaped to slightly curved, measured 0?5&ndash;0?661?0-1?3 mm and were motile by a single polar flagellum. Strain Chol-1ST grew optimally at 30&ndash;32 &deg;C and pH 7?0, with a doubling time of 44&ndash;46 h when cholesterol was used as the sole carbon and energy source. The metabolism of strain Chol-1ST was strictly respiratory, with oxygen or nitrate as the terminal electron acceptor. The presence of ubiquinone Q-8 as the sole respiratory lipoquinone indicated that strain Chol-1ST belonged to the b-subclass of the Proteobacteria. Phosphatidylethanolamine was the predominant polar lipid and the G+C content of the DNA was 65?3 mol%. The fatty acid profile of strain Chol-1ST, cultivated under denitrifying conditions by using a defined mineral medium supplemented with cholesterol, was characterized by the following major components: summed feature 4 (C16 : 1v7c and/or iso C15 : 0 2-OH), C16 : 0, C18 : 1v7c and hydroxy acid C10 : 0 3-OH. Minor components included C10 : 0, C11 : 0, C12 : 0, C14 : 0, C15 : 0, C19 : 0, C19 : 0 10-methyl and hydroxylated acids C8 : 0 3-OH and C16 : 0 3-OH. Analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence showed that strain Chol-1ST represents a separate lineage within the Thauera, Azoarcus, Zoogloea and Rhodocyclus assemblage of the b-Proteobacteria. Strain Chol-1ST had highest sequence similarity (96?5%) with strain 72Chol, a denitrifying b-Proteobacterium.On the basis of polyphasic evidence, strain Chol-1ST (=DSM 13999T=ATCC BAA-354T) is proposed as the type strain of Sterolibacterium denitrificans gen. nov., sp. nov]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Stilbenes belong to the group of non-flavonoid phenolic compounds. Resveratrol is the main stilbene present in grapes and wines. Many analytical methods have been reported for the determination of resveratrol in wine, which are primarily based on chromatographic techniques like high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), capillary electrophoresis (CE), and gas chromatography (GC). This chapter presents a liquid-liquid extraction method for stilbenes in grapes. The analytical methodology here presented, carried out by HPLC-MS, can be used both for grapes and wine.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Stille reaction was performed with several halo cis-diol derivatives by reaction with allyltributyltin in the presence of a palladium catalyst forming allyl cis-dihydrodiol derivatives. These couplings were conducted with conventional heating as well as with microwave irradiation. Allylbenzene cis-dihydrodiol was obtained with excellent yield using mild conventional heating. However, if the diol moiety is protected with the isopropylidene group, the expected product is obtained only under microwave irradiation. The unusual reactivity observed for the polyoxygenated derivatives suggests assistance of the free hydroxyls in the catalytic cycle.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Wet-mixing processes can be tuned to reduce energy consumption, although impacts on quality and stability should be addressed. This work evaluated the effect of wet-mix processing (total solids, TS: 50 or 60%; heat treatment: 75 or 100 C 18 s) and storage conditions (open package: 25 C, 58% RH, 4 weeks; closed package: 25 C, multilayer bag, 12 weeks) on the physicochemical stability and digestibility of infant formulas. Processing significantly influenced the physicochemical characteristics of the powders, with TS exerting a stronger impact than heat treatment. Powders produced from 60% TS wet mixes presented the fastest water sorption, which accelerated lactose crystallisation and fat liberation. Formulas in closed packages were stable for 12 weeks. While lactose crystallised before week 2 in openpackage storage, inducing major physical changes, only limited effects were observed on digestibility. These findings provide valuable insights to ensure consistent quality during shelf-life of infant formula.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Contamination of honey with toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and their N-oxides (PANOs) was assessed by dilution with acidic methanol and analysis through liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) in three different modes. The hybrid linear trap/triple quadrupole (LC-QTRAP) instrument was used in precursor ion scan (PIS), enhanced product ion scan (EPI), and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The parent ions from ions at m/z 120 or 138 amus, characteristic of all the toxic PAs and PANOs in the sample were first scanned by PIS. Then, the presence of each contaminant at specific retention times through its MS2 spectrum was confirmed by EPI. Finally, they were quantified in the MRM mode. The method was validated: recoveries 86–111%, relative standard deviation (RSD) &lt;20%, at 20 and 40 μg/kg, except retrorsine, which showed a RSD of 30% at 20 μg/kg. Honey samples were analyzed and five of them showed levels of 40 μg/kg for the sum (PAs + PANOs). This approach allows the simultaneous determination of PAs and PANOs in honey, even if their chemical standards are not available.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[El sostenido aumento en la prevalencia de hipertensi&oacute;n, uno de los principales&nbsp;factores de riesgo para el desarrollo de enfermedades cardiovasculares, es motivo de&nbsp;creciente preocupaci&oacute;n a nivel mundial. Para hacer frente a esta situaci&oacute;n se ha&nbsp;exhortado a los pa&iacute;ses a tomar acciones urgentes orientadas a mejorar el estado de&nbsp;salud de la poblaci&oacute;n. La reducci&oacute;n de la ingesta de sodio a nivel poblacional ha&nbsp;mostrado ser una iniciativa costo efectiva para lograr este objetivo, dado el estrecho&nbsp;v&iacute;ncluo entre el consumo de sodio y la presi&oacute;n arterial. En esta l&iacute;nea de acci&oacute;n, los&nbsp;esfuerzos se han focalizado principalmente en la reducci&oacute;n del contenido de sodio de&nbsp;productos procesados, que constituyen una fuente importante de sodio en la dieta. Sin&nbsp;embargo, la reducci&oacute;n del contenido de sal (cloruro de sodio) de los alimentos se&nbsp;enfrenta a una enorme dificultad: la preferencia del ser humano por el gusto salado y el&nbsp;impacto negativo de la reducci&oacute;n de sodio sobre la percepci&oacute;n del consumidor. En este&nbsp;contexto, el objetivo de la tesis fue estudiar diferentes estrategias de reducci&oacute;n de sodio&nbsp;en alimentos desde un enfoque sensorial. Para ello se consideraron dos productos&nbsp;extensamente consumidos por diversos segmentos de nuestra poblaci&oacute;n y con gran&nbsp;aporte de sodio a la dieta: pan y arroz. La tesis se focaliz&oacute; en la reformulaci&oacute;n de&nbsp;alimentos hacia contenidos menores de sodio pero tambi&eacute;n se abord&oacute; el impacto de&nbsp;comunicar contenido excesivo de sodio sobre la percepci&oacute;n del consumidor. Los&nbsp;resultados reafirmaron que el contenido de sal de los alimentos afecta significativamente&nbsp;la percepci&oacute;n sensorial y hed&oacute;nica del consumidor. La estrategia de reducci&oacute;n gradual&nbsp;mostr&oacute; gran potencial para disminuir el contenido de sodio en alimentos sin que los&nbsp;consumidores perciban el cambio. Los resultados sugieren que pueden implementarse&nbsp;reducciones de sal cercanas al 11% en arroz y pan blanco sin afectar la percepci&oacute;n del&nbsp;consumidor. No obstante, la principal desventaja de la reducci&oacute;n gradual es el tiempo&nbsp;requerido para disminuir la ingesta diaria de sodio a los niveles establecidos por las&nbsp;metas regionales y globales. En este sentido, la combinaci&oacute;n de esta estrategia con la&nbsp;sustituci&oacute;n parcial de 30% de cloruro de sodio por cloruro de potasio mostr&oacute; ser una&nbsp;alternativa prometedora para lograr reducciones m&aacute;s r&aacute;pidas. La inclusi&oacute;n de&nbsp;advertencias nutricionales en el frente del paquete favoreci&oacute; la elecci&oacute;n de productos&nbsp;con bajo contenido de sodio y mostr&oacute; enorme potencial para modificar la percepci&oacute;n&nbsp;hed&oacute;nica del consumidor. Se espera que los resultados de esta tesis proporcionen&nbsp;insumos valiosos para el dise&ntilde;o e implementaci&oacute;n de programas de reducci&oacute;n de sodio&nbsp;a nivel poblacional.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The aim of the present work is to study the influence of the sequential or competitive adsorption of anti-HSA (Human Serum Albumin) IgG and RSA (Rabbit Serum Albumin) onto a negatively charged polystyrene latex on the colloidal stability of the immunoiatex (IgG-RSA/latex). Anionic (1-2) latex was prepared by surfactant free emulsion polymerization. Adsorption of IgG and RSA on the latex 1-2 was performed at low ionic strength and different pHs. Sequential and competitive adsorption of a-HSA IgG and RSA were performed Colloidal stability of immunolatex was improved by RSA adsorption, especially in the competitive adsorption. In this last case, the immunological agglutination reactions of physically adsorbed IgG molecules onto anionic particles have been investigated by means of optical absorbance measurements. These measurements have been conducted under different experimental conditions to determine the most influential factors. Surface IgG and BSA densities, particle concentration in the reaction medium, and polyethylene glycol concentration are some of these factors. An amount of HSA lesser than 60 ng/ml has been possible to detect using this particle enhanced optical immunoassay.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Children&rsquo;s sugar intake has raised concern worldwide as it exceeds nutritional recommendations. Although sugars are naturally present in food, sugars added to foods during industrial processing are currently the main source of sugar in children's diets. In particular, dairy products, which are generally recommended to be part of children diets, have drawn attention due to their high content of sugar. In this context, the main objective of this thesis was to explore different sugar reduction strategies in dairy products targeted at children. Results showed that sugar reduction of dairy products targeted at children available in the Uruguayan marketplace is possible. A direct sugar reduction up to 25% did not have a significant impact on children hedonic perception in three dairy products. Meanwhile the use of taste-odor-texture cross-modal interactions allowed to minimize the impact of sugar reduction on the sensory characteristics of dairy desserts. Co-creation with children was identified as a feasible approach to develop innovative healthy dairy products with high acceptance among children. Finally, package information influenced parent&rsquo;s healthiness perception and choice of snacks for their children, stressing that packaging regulations should play a key role as part of the comprehensive set of strategies that should be implemented to reduce children's sugar intake. Overall, results from this work provide useful insights to food scientists for the development of sugar reduced products targeted at children, as well as valuable information for policy makers to design programs to reduce children&rsquo;s sugar intake at population level.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Polyphenols are a popular functional ingredient used in foods due to their antioxidant activity. The leaves of Acca sellowiana, a South American native plant, have a much higher polyphenol content than other popular native plants in the region. In this context, five strawberry jams were developed with increasing amounts of A. sellowiana extract. A panel of trained sensory assessors initially evaluated the sensory profiles of the obtained products. Subsequently, three jams were selected and were evaluated by 96 consumers in two instances. Coded samples were presented in the first session; in the second session, the consumers were presented with information on whether the jams contained antioxidants or not. In both sessions, the acceptability was determined and a description was obtained by means of a check-all-that-apply question. The original jam without A. sellowiana extract presented a polyphenol content of 310.0&thinsp;mg gallic acid equivalents/100&thinsp;g and an acceptability higher than 6 in both sessions. A jam was obtained in which the polyphenol content increased to 467.5&thinsp;mg gallic acid equivalents/100&thinsp;g, with a sensory profile and acceptability that were similar to those of the original product. Information on enrichment with antioxidants did not affect the acceptability, but it did modify the consumer&rsquo;s perception, as the consumer showed a predisposition to perceive negative sensory attributes when the product was presented with such information but also perceived it as novel and a good complement to the diet.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Here we devised a platform for high throughput identification of nanobodies to cell receptor based on the use of a biotin handle.<br />Methods<br /><br />Using a biotin-acceptor peptide tag, the in vivo biotinylation of nanobodies in 96 well culture blocks was optimized allowing their parallel analysis by flow cytometry and ELISA, and their direct use for pull-down/MS target identification.<br />Results<br /><br />The potential of this strategy was demonstrated by the selection and characterization of panels of nanobodies to Mac-1 (CD11b/CD18), MHC II and the mouse Ly-5 leukocyte common antigen (CD45) receptors, from a VHH library obtained from a llama immunized with mouse bone marrow derived dendritic cells. By on and off switching of the addition of biotin, the method also allowed the epitope binning of the selected Nbs directly on cells.<br />Conclusions<br /><br />This strategy streamlines the selection of potent nanobodies to complex antigens, and the selected nanobodies constitute ready-to-use biotinylated reagents.<br />General significance<br /><br />This method will accelerate the discovery of nanobodies to cell membrane receptors which comprise the largest group of drug and analytical targets.<br /><br />]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[By means of first principle calculations, we investigated the effects of the adsorption of the strong n-type dopant 4-(1,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)phenyl)dimethylamine (N-DMBI) onto graphene. The adsorption of radical N-DMBI (R-N-DMBI) occurs with large adsorption energy (Eads) of 44.4 kcal/mol and induces a metallic character on graphene by shifting the Dirac point 0.6 eV below the Fermi level. The charge received by graphene can be almost completely removed and thus the metallic character may be inhibited if 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetra-cyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ) is simultaneously adsorbed on any side of graphene. In effect, by doing so, the semimetallic character is recovered or a tiny gap is opened. When F4-TCNQ and radical N-DMBI are adsorbed on the same side, the molecules are strongly held together thanks to the hydrogen bond formed between the fluorine atoms of F4-TCNQ and the H of R-N-DMBI. In this case, the Eads is over 120 kcal/mol, per F4-TCNQ/R-N-DMBI pair. When the latter two molecules are adsorbed on opposite sides, the Eads is 87.6 kcal/mol. This value is more than 30 kcal/mol smaller than that computed when they are adsorbed on the same side, even though it is nearly 10 kcal/mol larger than the sum of the Eads of isolated F4-TCNQ and R-N-DMBI. In this case, graphene behaves as a medium that transfers electrons from R-N-DMBI to F4-TCNQ, without having the molecules in direct contact. We see a strong synergic interaction that increases the Eads when an electron donating molecule is combined with an electron withdrawing one. R-N-DMBI has a profound influence on the reactivity of graphene. Bond energies between the graphene surface and H, F, and OH radicals increased when R-N-DMBI is adsorbed, but the addition of these radicals destroys the metallic character of the graphene-R-N-DMBI complex and band gaps in the range of 0.2&ndash;0.4 eV are opened. These results show that the radical N-DMBI alters the chemistry and electronic properties of graphene to an extent, which rivals the most popular molecules and substrates used in the noncovalent chemistry of graphene.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Flooding impacts soil microbial communities, but its effect on endophytic communities has rarely been explored. This work addresses the effect of flooding on the abundance and diversity of endophytic diazotrophic communities on rice plants established in a greenhouse experiment. The nifH gene was significantly more abundant in roots after flooding, whereas the nifH gene copy numbers in leaves were unaffected and remained low. The PCA (principal component analysis) of T-RFLP (terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism) profiles indicated that root communities of replicate plots were more similar and diverse after flooding than before flooding. The nifH libraries obtained by cloning and 454 pyrosequencing consistently showed a remarkable shift in the diazotrophic community composition after flooding. Gammaproteobacteria (66&ndash;98%), mainly of the genus Stenotrophomonas, prevailed in roots before flooding, whereas Betaproteobacteria was the dominant class (26&ndash;34%) after flooding. A wide variety of aerotolerant and anaerobic diazotrophic bacteria (e.g. Dechloromonas, Rhodopseudomonas, Desulfovibrio, Geobacter, Chlorobium, Spirochaeta, Selenomonas and Dehalobacter) with diverse metabolic traits were retrieved from flooded rice roots. These findings suggest that endophytic communities could be significantly impacted by changes in plant&ndash;soil conditions derived from flooding during rice cropping.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A set of aryloxy-quinones, previously synthesized and evaluated against Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes cultures, were found more potent and selective than nifurtimox. One of the possible mechanisms of the trypanocidal activity of these quinones could be inhibition of trypanothione reductase (TR). Considering that glutathione reductase (GR) is the equivalent of TR in humans, biochemical, kinetic, and molecular docking studies in TR and GR were envisaged and compared with the trypanocidal and cytotoxic data of a set of aryloxy-quinones. Biochemical assays indicated that three naphthoquinones (Nq-h, Nq-g, and Nq-d) selectively inhibit TR and the TR kinetic analyses indicated that Nq-h inhibit TR in a noncompetitive mechanism. Molecular dockings were performed in TR and GR in the following three putative binding sites: the catalytic site, the dimer interface, and the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-binding site. In TR and GR, the aryloxy-quinones were found to exhibit high affinity for a site near it cognate-binding site in a place in which the noncompetitive kinetics could be justified. Taking as examples the three compounds with TR specificity (TRS) (Nq-h, Nq-g, and Nq-d), the presence of a network of contacts with the quinonic ring sustained by the triad of Lys62, Met400&prime;, Ser464&prime; residues, seems to contribute hardly to the TRS. Compound Nq-b, a naphthoquinone with nitrophenoxy substituent, proved to be the best scaffold for the design of trypanocidal compounds with low toxicity. However, the compound displayed only a poor and non-selective effect toward TR indicating that TR inhibition is not the main reason for the antiparasitic activity of the aryloxy-quinones.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Oxyfluoride glass and glass‐ceramics are being studied due to the possibility of their utilization in many applications, such as thermoluminescent dosimeters, optical fibers, fluorescent concentrators, and temperature sensors. In order to improve the properties of glass, they are often crystallized. For this crystallization to be effective, knowledge and control of the structure of the starting material is required. Much work was done on silicate glass; however, a great interest exists in obtaining these kinds of materials in other matrices such as germanates, phosphates, and borates. Here, we present a structural study of some oxyfluoride borate glass with different concentrations of PbF2 by means of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Raman, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies. We also analyzed glass‐crystallization using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The crystallization study was complemented with the use of Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED), for the purpose of identifying possible mechanisms of crystallization. Our results indicate, from the structural point of view, that the glass present groups with one or two BO4 species, such as diborate or pentaborate. The small variation in the BO4 fraction with the increase in PbF2 concentration would be an indication of the formation of F&minus;BO3/2 species. Oxyfluoride borate glass containing BaO as a cation modifier and 30% PbF2 represents a good starting point for obtaining glass‐ceramics with a narrow size distribution of BaF2 nanocrystals. We also propose that the possible mechanism for oxyfluoride borate glass crystallization started with a separation of phases.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[NixLaSn trimetallic catalysts (x = 5 and 15% by weight) were prepared by a coprecipitation technique by pH change and then calcined at 700 &deg;C, 850 &deg;C, 900 &deg;C and 950 &deg;C. XRD analysis of the fresh and unreduced catalysts showed the formation of crystalline phases corresponding to the pyrochlore structure La2Sn2O7 and NiO following calcination at 850 &deg;C, 900 &deg;C and 950 &deg;C. Ni3Sn and Ni3Sn2 compounds were formed under a pure hydrogen atmosphere and 650 &deg;C in the well crystallized catalyst containing the pyrochlore. This catalyst was highly active in the ethanol steam reforming reaction at 650 &deg;C, giving yield to gaseous mixtures containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methane. XRD analysis of the spent catalyst showed the presence of Ni3Sn2, Ni3Sn and the pyrochlore as unique phases after 80 hours of reaction time. After an initial decay, H2 yield kept stable until the end of the test. Carbon formation was observed by TEM, TG and elemental analysis. Lanthanum carbonates were also revealed by Raman spectroscopy. The highly stable biphasic structure containing Ni-Sn intermetallic compounds and the La2Sn2O7 could be the basis of catalysts for the production of H2-rich gaseous mixtures starting from bioethanol.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[[TcvO2(tn)2]I (tn = trimethylenediamine) was prepared form direct reduction of TcO4&minus; with dithionite in presence of the ligand. The crystal structure of [TcO2(tn)2]I&middot;H2O was determined from X-ray data. It consists on a squashed octahedron with TcO bond legnths of 1.784 and 1.754 &Aring; conforming a TcO2+ core. The amines lie in the equatorial plane, almost perpendicular to the core. Conformational analyses of several analogous trans-Mv dioxo complexes (M = Tc, Re) was performed by molecular mechanics and semiempirical calculations. Energy differences between possible conformers are low. Therefore, a mixture of different conformers is expected to be found in solution.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In this work we present studies on applicability of transition metal additives as sintering and electrical conductivity aids for cerium gadolinium oxide electrolyte. The nanosized Ce0.85Gd0.15O1.925 powder obtained by coprecipitation method was modified with Cr3+, Fe3+, Ni2+ or Cu2+ ions. Using high-intensity high-resolution X-ray powder diffraction data we have determined that Cr, Fe and Ni ions do not incorporate into the cerium gadolinium oxide surface or bulk when sintered at 1300 ◦C, but react with Gd ions to form Cr0.9Gd0.1O, GdFeO3 and GdNiO3 phases, while Cu incorporates in the material up to 0.7 mol% with a significant fraction of remaining material showing poorly crystalline CuO phase. The nanosized Ce0.85Gd0.15O1.925 material shows already improved sintering properties than previous reports but full sintering is not achieved below 1300 ◦C, however Cr, Fe and mainly Cu impregnation allows full sintering at 1300 ◦C. 0.5 mol% Ni impregnated material sintered at 1500 ◦C shows enhanced grain boundary conductivity that probably indicates that Ni incorporates into Ce0.84Gd0.15O1.925 above 1300 ◦C. The global results indicate, however, that optimization of ceria microstructure is at least of equal importance for sinterability and grain boundary conductivity than impregnation of the material with transition metal ions.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Understanding the role of defects in the magnetic properties of the graphene buffer layer (BL) grown on substrates should be important to provide hints for manufacturing future graphene-based spintronic devices in a controlled fashion. Herein, density functional theory was applied to assess the structure and magnetic properties of defective BL on 6H-SiC(0001). Particularly, we conducted a thorough study of one and two vacancies and Stone&ndash;Wales defects in the BL. Our results reveal that the removal of a carbon atom in the BL framework that was originally bonded to a Si atom in the substrate is preferred over that of a sp2-bonded atom. As a result, a hexacoordinated silicon atom is formed with a slightly deviated octahedral geometry. A stable antiferromagnetic (AF) state was verified for the single vacancy system, with a quite different spin-density distribution to the one obtained for the perfect BL. Also, this AF state is nearly degenerate with the non-magnetic and low magnetic states. As for the Stone&ndash;Wales defect, the AF sate is almost degenerate with the most stable M = 2 mB magnetic configuration. However, the introduction of two vacancies in the carbon network of BL causes the loss of magnetism of the BL&ndash;SiC system. Our theoretical calculations support experimental predictions favoring the BL as the site for single vacancy formation rather than the epitaxial monolayer graphene, by 4.3 eV

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Two new copper(II) complexes containing the methyl(2-pyridyl)ketone oxime ligand (mpkoH) [Cu3(OH)(ClO4)2(mpko)3]&middot;CH3OH (1) and [Cu(ClO4)(mpko)(mpkoH)]n (2) have been prepared from Cu(ClO4)2 and mpkoH in different metal-to-ligand molar ratios. In addition, the compound [Cu{(mpko)2BF2}(H2O)](BF4) (3) [(mpko)2BF2 is the fluoroboration product of the oxime] has been obtained when replacing Cu(ClO4)2 by Cu(BF4)2. Compound 1 is an isolated triangle with a {Cu3(&micro;3-OH)}5+ core, whereas 2 is a chain of CuII ions linked by anionic mpko&minus; bridges. 1 exhibits strong antiferromagnetic competing interactions, as well as antisymmetric exchange. On the other hand, very weak ferromagnetic interactions are found in 2. The magnetic properties of these compounds have been analyzed by magnetic measurements and EPR spectra.]]></dcterms:abstract>
