    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>An in-house synthesized activated biocarbon (aBC) and commercial Vulcan carbon (V) were studied as PdSn catalyst<br />supports for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in an alkaline medium. The results obtained showed that the PdSn/V<br />electrocatalyst presented much higher catalytic performance than the PdSn/aBC. These results can be associated with the<br />fact that the catalyst particles in the PdSn/V electrocatalyst presented a higher SnO2 concentration compared to PdSn/aBC. The presence of SnO2 has an electronic effect that accelerates the adsorption of ethanol on the surface of Pd, thus enhancing the ethanol oxidation kinetics and contributing to a significant improvement in the PdSn/V catalytic activity. However, nosignificant differences were observed in the EOR mechanism.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>The rod-shaped and Gram-stain-negative bacterial strain 16FT, isolated from an air sample collected at King George Island, maritime Antarctica, was investigated to determine its taxonomic status.<br />Strain 16FT is strictly aerobic, catalase positive, oxidase positive and non-motile. Strain 16FT hydrolyses casein, lecithin, Tween 20, 60 and 80, but not aesculin, gelatin and starch. Growth of strain 16FT is observed at 0&ndash;20 C (optimum 10 C), pH 5.0&ndash;8.0 (optimum pH 6.0), and in the presence of 0&ndash;2.0% NaCl (optimum 0.5%). The predominant menaquinone is MK-6, and the major fatty acids comprise anteiso-C15:0 and iso-C15:0. The major polar lipids are<br />phosphatidylethanolamine, ornithine lipid OL2, unidentified phospholipid PL1 and the unidentified lipids L3 and L6 lacking functional groups. The DNA G ? C content based on the draft genome sequence is 32.3 mol%. Sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene indicates the highest similarity to Kaistella palustris<br />3A10T (95.4%), Kaistella chaponensis Sa 1147-06 T<br />(95.2%), Kaistella antarctica AT1013T (95.1%), Kaistella carnis NCTC 13525 T (95.1%) and below 95.0% to other species with validly published names. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene and whole-genome sequences places strain 16FT in a distinct branch, indicating a separate lineage within the family Weeksellaceae. Based on the data from our polyphasic approach, 16FT represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Frigoriflavimonas asaccharolytica gen. nov, sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 16FT (= CCM 8975 T = CGMCC No.1.16844 T).</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>The use of the mononuclear rhenium(II) precursor NBu4[Re(NO)Br4(H2pydc)]&sdot;i-PrOH (1) (H2pydc = 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid) as a metalloligand towards Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) afforded three new heterobimetallic<br />complexes [Re(NO)Br4(&mu;-Hpydc)Cu(4,4&prime; dmbipy)2]&sdot;(CH3)2CO&sdot;0.25MeCN (2), [Re(NO)Br4(&mu;-Hpydc)Ni<br />(dmphen)2]&sdot;MeCN (3) and [Re(NO)Br4(&mu; Hpydc)Co(dmphen)2]&sdot;2H2O (4), respectively [4,4&prime; -dmbipy = 4,4&prime; -dimethyl-2,2&prime; -bipyridine, dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline and Bu4N+ = tetra-n-butylammonium].<br />The crystal structures of 1 and 2 are reported herein together with the cryomagnetic investigation of 1&ndash;4 in the<br />temperature range of 2.0&ndash;300 K. 1 is a mononuclear compound whose structure is made of [Re(NO) Br4(H2pydc)]- complex anions, tetra-n-butylammonium cations and isopropanol molecules of crystallization. Each rhenium(II) ion in 1 is six-coordinate with four bromide ligands in the equatorial positions and a nitrosyl group and one pyridyl-nitrogen atom from an H2pydc ligand filling the axial sites. 2 is a neutral heterobimetallic compound where the [Re(NO)Br4(Hpydc)]2- complex anion acts as a monodentate ligand towards the [Cu(4,4&prime; -dmbipy)2]2+ complex cation through one carboxylate&ndash;oxygen atom. The rhenium(II) ion is six-coordinate in a somewhat distorted octahedral surrounding similar to that in 1. The copper(II) ion in 2 is five-coordinate with four nitrogen atoms from two bidentate 4,4&prime; -dmbipy ligands and one carboxylate&ndash;oxygen atom, describing a surrounding intermediate between square pyramidal and trigonal bipyramidal. Compound 1 behaves as a quasimagnetically<br />isolated spin doublet with weak antiferromagnetic interactions through space Br⋯Br contacts, ligand field, spin&ndash;orbit coupling, tetragonal distortion, and covalence effects considered as variable parameters in a successful simulation of the magnetic data. Compounds 2&ndash;4 exhibit also weak intramolecular antiferromagnetic interactions (J) covering the range - 0.60(1) to - 1.50(1) cm- 1 with the Hamiltonian being defined as<br />H = -JSReSM, M = Cu (2), Ni (3) and Co (4).</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Tissue engineering (TE) and regenerative medicine offer strategies to improve damaged tissues by using scaffolds and cells. The use of collagen-based biomaterials in the field of TE has been intensively growing over the past decades. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) are promising cell candidates for development of clinical composites. In this study, we proposed the development<br />of a bovine collagen type I: chondroitin-6-sulphate (CG) scaffold, obtained from Uruguayan raw material (certified as free bovine spongiform encephalopathy), with CG crosslinking enhancement using different gamma radiation doses. Structural, biomechanical and chemical characteristics of the<br />scaffolds were assessed by Scanning Electron Microscopy,<br />axial tensile tests, FT-IR and Raman Spectroscopy,<br />respectively. Once we selected the most appropriate scaffold for future use as a TE product, we studied the behavior of MSCs and DPSCs cultured on the scaffold by cytotoxicity, proliferation and differentiation assays. Among the diverse porous scaffolds<br />obtained, the one with the most adequate properties was the one exposed to 15 kGy of gamma radiation.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>It is widely accepted that the use of alkyl zinc and alkyl zinc alkoxide precursors are usually preferred instead of the popularly used zinc acetate precursor to obtaining better control on the synthesis of different zinc-oxo clusters and nanostructures. However, there are very few reports about zinc dialkoxides precursors and not many ones studying these precursors in a typical hydrolysiscondensation route. In the present report, we focus on the study of zinc dimethoxide structural features and their Raman spectroscopy signatures in the absence and presence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) adduct. Our theoretical calculations using Density Functional Theory (DFT) reveal that monomeric, dimeric and trimeric zinc dimethoxide exhibit distinctive Raman signatures, particularly at the low frequency region. In addition, some particular vibrational modes of zinc dimethoxide also evidenced some characteristic shifting and splitting in the presence of explicit THF coordination molecules. Our experimental approach using<br />surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) reveals a quite complex combination of Raman signatures associated to zinc<br />dimethoxide clusters corroborating tetrahydrofuran coordination and further early hydrolysis-condensation scenario. We aim to<br />shed some light on the chemical structure of this particular zinc dimethoxide precursor and some of its early hydrolysis condensation products employing a powerful, popular and versatile technique such as Raman spectroscopy as it can be a<br />promising candidate to access and simultaneously monitor the formation of novel zinc-oxo clusters and nanostructures.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Five heteroleptic compounds, [VVO(IN-2H)(L-H)], where L are 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives and IN is a Schiff base ligand, were synthesized and characterized in both the solid and solution state. The compounds were evaluated on epimastigotes and trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi as well as on VERO cells, as a mammalian cell model. Compounds showed activity against trypomastigotes with IC50 values of 0.29&ndash;3.02 M. IN ligand and the new [VVO2(IN-H)] complex showed negligible activity. The most active compound [VVO(IN-2H)(L2-H)], with L2 = 5-chloro-7-iodo- 8-hydroxyquinoline, showed good selectivity towards the parasite and was selected to carry out further biological studies. Stability studies suggested a partial decomposition in solution. [VVO(IN-2H)(L2-H)] affects the infection potential of cell-derived trypomastigotes. Low total vanadium uptake by parasites and preferential accumulation in the soluble proteins fraction were determined. A trypanocide effect was observed when incubating epimastigotes with 10  IC50 values of [VVO(IN-2H)(L2-H)] and the generation of ROS after treatments was suggested. Fluorescence competition measurements with DNA:ethidium bromide adduct showed a moderate DNA interaction of the complexes. In vivo toxicity study on C. elegans model showed no toxicity up to a 100 M concentration of [VVO(IN-2H)(L2-H)]. This compound could be considered a prospective anti-T. cruzi agent that deserves further research.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Zero-trans edible fats attractive to be used for shortenings or margarines were designed solely from rice bran oil (RBO). For this purpose, RBO was fully hydrogenated, blended with the original oil at different percentages, and finally, blends were interesterified by an enzyme-catalyzed process. The<br />interesterification process reduced the concentration of trisaturated and triunsaturated triglycerides and increased the concentration of medium saturation degree molecules, thus increasing their compatibility and causing the moderation of the melting point, as compared with blends. Conversely to blends, products showed a high tendency to crystallize under the b&rsquo; polymorph, which is the preferred one for products destined for many edible applications. Results demonstrated that the proper combination of different technologies (total hydrogenation, blending and interesterification) is a versatile and useful technology for designing zero-trans fats from RBO, attractive for the confection of shortenings or margarines for different<br />applications depending on the proportion of each component in the starting blend. This strategy offers an attractive alternative for the diversification of RBO utilization, a valuable vegetable oil still underexploited, providing attractive fats useful for structuring different type of foods.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>In the search of antimicrobial agents a novel bisthiazole ligand containing a methylamine linker (ethyl 2-((2-methylthiazole-4-yl)methylamino)thiazole-4-carboxylate (BTa) and its copper(II) complex [CuCl2BTa]&sdot;2H2O were synthetized. Both compounds were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic methods. Single crystal Xray diffraction of copper complex evidence a pentacoordinated copper(II) center of intermediate geometry<br />forming 5 and 7 membered chelate rings with BTa acting as a tridentate ligand leaving the amine N&ndash;H group in the thiazole linker available for participation in intermolecular interactions. Structure packing was analyzed by means of Hirshfeld surfaces, 2D fingerprint plots and lattice interaction energies were assessed. In order to deepen the understanding of the coordination to the flexible ligand DFT studies were carried out at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level of theory. Calculated FTIR frequencies were used to perform a Vibrational Energy Distribution Analysis (VEDA) where potential energy distribution of vibrational was determined. Minimum inhibitory concentrations for BTa and CuBTa on E. coli ATCC 25922, S. aureus ATCC 25923, P. aeruginosa ATCC 9027 and C. albicans ATCC 10231 were determined.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>In May 2020, Uruguay was one of the few Latin American countries that had managed to control the outbreak of<br />COVID-19 without mandatory curfews or quarantines. However, several social distancing measures created a major disruption in different aspects of the daily life of Uruguayan citizens. In this context, the objectives of the present work were i) to identify changes in eating habits perceived by Uruguayan citizens as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, and ii) to explore factors associated with different perceived changes on eating habits. A cross-sectional online study was conducted with 891 participants, recruited using an advertisement on Facebook<br />and Instagram. Fifty-one percent of the participants indicated that their eating habits had changed since the detection of the first cases of COVID-19 in Uruguay. Large heterogeneity in the categorization of the changes existed: 45% of the participants regarded the changes as positive, 32% as negative and 23% as neither positive nor negative. A multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to study the influence of explanatory variables in the likelihood of belonging to groups who reported different changes in eating habits (no changes, positive,<br />negative, or neither positive nor negative changes). Household income and reliance on instrumental and emotional support increased the likelihood of reporting positive changes in eating habits, whereas negative changes were associated with a reduction in household income due to COVID-19 and the coping strategies selfdistraction and self-blaming. Insights for policy making to reinforce positive effects and minimize threats to<br />healthy eating are discussed.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Glutaric acid and adipic acid are dicarboxylic acids (DCAs) that are commonly found in atmospheric aerosols and cloud droplets. Within this study, the temperature- and pH-dependent rate constants of aqueous-phase OH radical reactions<br />of these two DCAs were determined through the competition kinetics method. The following Arrhenius expressions were derived for the temperature dependency of the OH radical reaction with glutaric acid: k(T, H2A) = (3.9 &plusmn; 0.1) &times; 1010 &times; exp[(&minus;1270 &plusmn; 200 K)/T], k(T, HA&minus;) = (2.3 &plusmn; 0.1) &times; 1011 &times; exp[(&minus;1660 &plusmn; 190 K)/T], k(T, A2&minus;) = (1.4 &plusmn; 0.1) &times; 1011 &times; exp[(&minus;1400 &plusmn; 170 K)/T]. Similarly, for adipic acid: k(T, H2A)<br />= (7.5 &plusmn; 0.2) &times; 1010 &times; exp[(&minus;1210 &plusmn; 170 K)/T], k(T, HA&minus;) = (9.5 &plusmn; 0.3) &times; 1010 &times; exp[(&minus;1200 &plusmn; 200 K)/T], k(T, A2&minus;) = (8.7 &plusmn; 0.2) &times; 1010 &times; exp[(&minus;1100 &plusmn; 170 K)/T] (in units of L mol&minus;1 s&minus;1). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to calculate the energy barrier of the H atom abstraction. The calculation results show that the energy barriers at the C&beta;-atoms of the two DCAs are much lower than those at the C&alpha;-atoms, indicating that the H atom abstractions predominantly occur at the C&beta;-atoms. The increased &middot;OH rate constant in the case of the deprotonated form can be explained by the reduction of energy barrier, which is predominately caused by the variation of the inductive effect of the carboxyl group. As an important sink in the atmosphere, the degradation of glutaric acid and adipic acid by &middot;OH under atmospheric conditions can be accurately described by the Arrhenius expressions obtained.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Objective: To analyse the process for the development and implementation of&nbsp;mandatory nutritional warning labels inUruguay, in order to inform future nutrition&nbsp;policy making and strategic engagement by public health actors.<br />Design: The study design drew on policy analysis methodology&nbsp; and case study&nbsp;research methodology. Two main sources of information were selected and analysed&nbsp;for the current study: eighteen official documents from the Uruguayan government<br />and 259 news reports, published between June 2017 and February 2021.<br />Setting: Uruguay, Latin America.<br />Results: The Uruguayan Ministry of Public Health led a cross-sectoral working&nbsp;group composed of diverse governmental stakeholders, international organisations&nbsp;and the academia to develop the front-of-package nutrition labelling policy.<br />A robust evidence-based approach, based on rigorous scientific knowledge generated&nbsp;in the country, was followed. However, changes in the systemic governing&nbsp;coalition as a consequence of a change in government led to a delay in the entry into force and changes in the regulation. The food industry was the main opponent&nbsp;to the warning label regulation and relied on widely reported corporate political&nbsp;activities to influence the policy process: information and messaging, legal action,&nbsp;policy substitution, opposition, fragmentation and destabilisation.<br />Conclusions: Key insights to inform future policy action in Uruguay and other jurisdictions&nbsp;were derived. Results stressed the importance of an evidence-based&nbsp;approach for policy design and the early engagement with actors from all the political<br />system.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>The metabolic alterations associated with the increase in milk production make the transition period critical to the health of dairy cows, usually leading to a higher incidence of disease in periparturient animals. In this manuscript, we describe the use of NMR-based untargeted metabolomics to follow how these changes impact the serum metabolome in a group of 28 transition dairy cows with no initial clinical diseases. Principal component analysis (PCA) of serum 1H NMR data from<br />four weeks before calving to 8 weeks after parturition allowed us to clearly identify four stages during the transition period. Pairwise comparisons using orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) and univariate data analysis led to the identification of 18 metabolites that varied significantly through these stages. Species such as acetate, betaine, and creatine are observed early after calving, while other markers of metabolic stress, including acetone, -hydroxybutyrate (BHB), and choline, accumulate significantly at the height of milk production. Furthermore, marked<br />variations in the levels of lactate, allantoin, alanine, and other amino acids reveal the activation of different gluconeogenic pathways following parturition. Concomitant with a return to homeostasis, a gradual normalization of the serum metabolome occurs 8 weeks after calving. Correlations of metabolite levels with dietary and metabolic adaptations based on animal parity could also be identified. Overall, these results show that NMR-based chemometric methods are ideally suited to monitor manifestations of metabolic diseases throughout the transition period and to assess the impact of nutritional management schemes on the metabolism of dairy cows.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>The effect on color of the initial pH employed in dulce de leche (DL) production was evaluated through physicochemical and spectroscopical characterization of the melanoidins formed in the process. Melanoidins originated at pH values of 6.5, 7.0,<br />and 7.5, and they were released by the enzymatic hydrolysis of the protein backbone and purified by gel filtration. They showed a significant degree of polydispersity, in general, with molecular weights (MWs) below 1,800 Da. DL produced at a higher pH<br />released melanoidins with higher average MW after the enzymatic hydrolysis. They also presented darker colors (dE&lowast;ab, C&lowast;), more closely resembling those typical of the commercial product. Analysis of the fractions isolated by gel filtration using HPLC-DAD and multinuclear NMR showed an heterogeneous and complex composition. Even though structurally related, the 1H NMR spectra of melanoidins showed a higher degree of aromaticity at higher pH values. In conclusion, the pH employed in DL production affects the amount and structure of the colored products originated by MR reactions, and thus the color of the final product.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Phage-borne peptides and antibody fragments isolated from phage display libraries have proven to be versatile and<br />valuable reagents for immunoassay development. Due to the lack of convenient and mild-condition methods for the labeling of the phage particles, isolated peptide/protein affinity ligands are commonly removed from the viral particles and conjugated to protein tracers or nanoparticles for analytical use. This abolishes the advantage of isolating ready-to-use affinity binders and creates the risk of affecting the polypeptide activity. To circumvent this problem, we optimized the phage display system to produce phage particles that express the affinity binder on pIII and a polyglycine short peptide fused to pVIII that allows the covalent attachment of tracer molecules employing sortase A. Using a llama heavy chain only variable domain (VHH) against the herbicide 2,4-D on pIII as the<br />model, we showed that the phage can be extensively decorated with a rhodamine-LPETGG peptide conjugate or the protein<br />nanoluciferase (Nluc) equipped with a C-terminal LPETGG peptide. The maximum labeling amounts of rhodamine-LPETGG and Nluc-LPETGG were 1238 &plusmn; 63 and 102 &plusmn; 16 per phage, respectively. The Nluc-labeled dual display phage was employed to develop a phage bioluminescent immunoassay (P-BLEIA) for the detection of 2,4-D. The limit of detection and 50% inhibition<br />concentration of P-BLEIA were 0.491 and 2.15 ng mL&minus;1, respectively, which represent 16-fold and 8-fold improvement compared to the phage enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In addition, the P-BLEIA showed good accuracy for the detection of 2,4-D in spiked samples.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Whey is an abundantand sustainable source of bioactive peptides obtained from cheese making process. Whey proteins such as &alpha;-lactalbumin can be biologically active when the bioactive peptides encrypted in the amino acid sequence of the native protein are released by enzymatic hydrolysis. In<br />the present work, the identification, sequence analysis, and antioxidant activity of bioaccessible peptides from &alpha;-lactalbumin alcalase-hydrolysate was assessed.<br />Antioxidant activity (ABTS, ORAC, andHORAC) of &alpha;-lactalbumin showed a significant increase (p &lt; 0.05) after the enzymatic treatment with alcalase and this capacity increased even more after the simulation of the gastrointestinal digestion<br />process. Peptides contained in the gastrointestinal digest of &alpha;-lactalbumin hydrolysate were separated by preparative RP-HPLC (55 fractions), and three peptides were identified by LC-MS/MS analysis from selected fractions: IWCKDDQNPH<br />(MW: 1254.54 Da) f(59-68), KFLDDDLTDDIM (MW: 1439.64 Da) f(79-90), DKFLDDDLTDDIM (MW: 1554.67 Da) f(78-90). Among the chemically synthesized peptides, IWCKDDQNPH showed the highest antioxidant capacity determined byORAC,ABTS, andHORAC assays (IC50 0.015&plusmn; 0.002, 0.45 &plusmn; 0.02, and 1.30 &plusmn; 0.05 mg/ml, respectively) and this activitymay be related to the amino acid sequence. This is the first report where these bioaccessible peptides from &alpha;-<br />lactalbumin hydrolysate were identified. The &alpha;-lactalbumin hydrolysate could be employed as a functional antioxidant ingredient.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

These attractants consist of 3-hydroxy-2-alkanones and 2,3-alkyldiols&shy; with chain lengths varying from six to ten carbons. The 3</span><span class="i">R</span><span>- and 3</span><span class="i">S</span><span>-series are generated by organocatalytic &alpha;-hydroxylation of alkyl ketones with nitrosobenzene in the presence of&nbsp;</span><span class="sc">l</span><span>- or&nbsp;</span><span class="sc">d</span><span>-proline, respectively, to obtain the hydroxyketones in high enantiomeric excess. Further reduction and chromatographic separation lead to the enantiomerically pure diols that complete the library.</span>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>The reduction of the environmental impact represents an important challenge<br />for the winemaking industry. Red grape by-products are composed of several<br />health-promoting components such as polyphenols and dietary fiber, which may<br />be employed as sustainable food ingredients. Although the bioactive properties<br />of red grape pomace, one of the most abundant byproducts of the winemaking<br />industry worldwide, have been extensively documented by in vitro studies,<br />there is a lack of information on the bioaccessibility, bioavailability and food<br />applications that will subsequently affect the contribution of grape byproduct<br />bioactive compounds to these properties. Therefore, the present chapter aimed<br />to present some of the latest grape byproducts in vitro bioactive properties,<br />as well as novel and updated knowledge related to its bioaccessibility,<br />bioavailability and food applications.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

Uno de los desaf&iacute;os para el crecimiento del sector es la producci&oacute;n de vinos con caracter&iacute;sticas distintivas, competitivos para el mercado internacional. Actualmente, existe una tendencia a explorar y utilizar el potencial de la microbiota silvestre nativa en el proceso de elaboraci&oacute;n de vinos, para aportar atributos que contribuyan a la calidad del producto. Algunos de estos atributos est&aacute;n asociados a productos generados por reacciones enzim&aacute;ticas, por lo que la b&uacute;squeda y estudio de nuevas enzimas con propiedades espec&iacute;ficas es muy interesante.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Major changes are needed both with regard to what we eat and how food is produced. The latter is the focus of the present research, specifically the rise of controlled environment agriculture. In this context, empirical research is presented on consumer attitudes to vertical farming (VF) (i.e., indoor plant factory with artificial lighting), conducted in four countries (USA, UK, Singapore, and China) using online surveys (637&ndash;683 participants per country with matched gender and age group distributions). A multi-method research approach was<br />used, including a novel methodology of text highlighting, which requires that participants read a descriptive text about VF with mentions of pros and cons and use highlighter functions to select aspects of the text that they &lsquo;like&rsquo; and &lsquo;dislike&rsquo;. Based on the information provided in the text, attitudes towards VF were largely positive in the four&nbsp; countries. The characteristics of VF that aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals were identified as key drivers of positive attitudes (i.e., higher yield, reduction of carbon emissions, and securing<br />access to food). On the other hand, high energy use and premium prices contributed to negative attitudes about VF. Although the majority of participants responded to the text with an overall positive attitude towards VF, there were smaller groups of participants in every country who expressed a negative or neutral/ambivalent attitude. These between-segment differences were larger than cross-cultural differences, although the latter did exist, particularly for selected aspects of VF. For example, Chinese participants tended to be the least negative about the use of robots to help planting and harvesting. Future research is needed to understand consumer responses to aspects VF not covered in the text (e.g., powering VF with renewable energy, product range), and consumer insights about VF should be sought in other countries.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Objective: To explore adolescents&rsquo; views about the foods they consume and to identify their ideas about strategies to encourage healthier eating habits.<br />Design: Individual questionnaires based on open-ended questions and group discussions (6&ndash;8 participants) were used to address the objectives. Data were analysed using content analysis based on deductive-inductive coding.<br />Setting: Montevideo and its metropolitan area (Uruguay, Latin America).<br />Participants: Totally, 102 adolescents (aged between 11 and 15 years, 52 %female) recruited at two educational institutions.<br />Results: Adolescents reported frequently consuming ultra-processed products and fast food although they were perceived as bad for their health, whereas they reported an infrequent consumption of fruits and vegetables. Multifaceted strategies<br />to promote healthy eating habits emerged from adolescents&rsquo; accounts, including public awareness campaigns, nutrition education programmes, nutrition label standards and regulations, and changes in food availability and affordability.<br />Conclusions: Results from the present work suggest that co-creation with adolescents may be an effective way to inform the development of strategies to promote healthier eating habits. The strategies suggested by adolescents were mainly focused on behaviour change communication, who emphasised the importance of social media and the involvement of celebrities and influencers. The need for educational and communication strategies to raise awareness of the social and environmental drivers of eating patterns among adolescents was identified.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[El conocimiento de las floraciones es &uacute;til para predecir el comportamiento de las colonias de Apis mellifera (abeja de la miel). El objetivo fue determinar las caracter&iacute;sticas flor&iacute;sticas desde el punto de vista ap&iacute;cola de un bosque serrano en Uruguay. Realizamos ocho visitas en tres sitios aleda&ntilde;os a la colmena: a 10-20 m, 500 m y 1500 m de distancia. En la primera visita determinamos especies, familias, origen (nativo o ex&oacute;tico) y frecuencia de cada tax&oacute;n. En visitas posteriores, censamos cu&aacute;les estaban florecidas (presencia o ausencia). Asignamos a cada especie un valor de uno a cinco para la abundancia (A) y la duraci&oacute;n de la floraci&oacute;n (P), durante dos a&ntilde;os. Utilizamos el &iacute;ndice de Shannon para medir la diversidad flor&iacute;stica. Se utiliz&oacute; un modelo lineal generali-zado para analizar la floraci&oacute;n a trav&eacute;s de las variables respuesta: presencia de floraci&oacute;n en invierno, primavera, verano y oto&ntilde;o, as&iacute; como duraci&oacute;n de la floraci&oacute;n. Calculamos un &iacute;ndice de Shannon de 3,6, lo que indica una alta biodiversidad. Luego correlacionamos los hallazgos de la prospecci&oacute;n con datos de la literatura sobre la ocurrencia de cada especie en estudios melisopalinol&oacute;gicos en mieles maduras e inmaduras. Por &uacute;ltimo, defi-nimos el t&eacute;rmino flora convertible para identificar los recursos florales cuyo polen se almacena cuando no hay ninguna flora disponible. Estas fueron Lithraea brasiliensis, Baccharis articulata, Baccharis trimera, Blepharo-calyx salicifolius, Eugenia uniflora, Colletia Paradoxa, Oxalis sp., Scutia buxifolia, Jodina rhombifolia, Aloysia gratissima, para las temporadas de primavera y oto&ntilde;o (P&lt;0.05). El t&eacute;rmino flora de soporte (P&lt;0.05) lo defini-mos para clasificar aquellos recursos que se encuentran en la miel inmadura y est&aacute;n casi ausentes en la miel madura, y se utilizan como nutrientes durante la expansi&oacute;n de la colonia: Schinus engleri, Maytenus ilicifolia, Eryngium pandanifolium, Baccharis punctulata, Abutilon pauciflorum, Daphnopsis racemosa, Allophylus edulis y Celtis tala. Esta clasificaci&oacute;n de la flora permite planificar los desarrollos y rendimientos de la miel esperados de una regi&oacute;n, y establecer paquetes tecnol&oacute;gicos &uacute;tiles y eficientes de cosechas de miel.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Nutraceutical properties of mandarins are of great interest to promote their consumption. The occurrence of free amino acids in foods is relevant to assess the nutritional value of it. To learn more about the amino acids&rsquo; occurrence and variability between species, a targeted metabolomics study in &lsquo;Ellendale&rsquo;, &lsquo;Willowleaf&rsquo; and &lsquo;Page&rsquo; varieties was performed through ion exchange liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. The studied amino acids were asparagine, glutamic acid, glutamine, histidine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, threonine and tyrosine. The difference between two consecutive seasons was evaluated, as well as the influence of fruit maturity of &lsquo;Page&rsquo; collected in two periods of 2015. The analytical methodology was validated. The concentration of the compounds through principal component analysis, separated well apart the three cultivars in both harvests, showing a particular profile for each of them. When comparing mature and immature cultivar &lsquo;Page&rsquo;, the amino acids with higher levels in mature samples were histidine, asparagine, glutamine and glutamic acid. The profiles were different due to genetic diversity, and the climatic conditions. These results add value to citric production.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Although the sensory characterization of mandarins has usually been performed by trained assessors, in recent years, the methodologies that depict sensory descriptions from the perception of consumers, such as the checkall- that-apply (CATA) questionnaires have become very popular. In this work, an exploratory study was first carried out using a focus group (FG) technique to determine attributes and aspects that influence the decision to purchase mandarins. Secondly, the consumer panel recruited 100 regular mandarin consumers that were randomly divided into two groups. Group &ldquo;A&rdquo; received segments of 15 mandarins. Group &ldquo;B&rdquo;, instead of receiving the same mandarins in segments, they received them as a whole fruit having to peel them by themselves. Both groups evaluated the total acceptability with a 9-point hedonic scale and answered a CATA questionnaire composed of 38 terms for Group &ldquo;A&rdquo; and 52 terms for Group &ldquo;B&rdquo;. Although the consumers in the FG described an "ideal" mandarin as easy-to-peel, no significant difference (p &gt; 0.05) was found in the acceptability<br />between groups &ldquo;A&rdquo; and &ldquo;B&rdquo;. Characteristics such as sweet, very sweet, fresh smell, sweet smell, bright, fruity taste, fresh flavor, typical flavor, balanced taste and nice flavor were strongly and positively correlated with overall consumers&rsquo; acceptance.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<div>YBa2Cu3O6+&delta; (YBC) oxygen deficient perovskite was synthesized by an auto-combustion method and was studied as potential cathode for Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (IT-SOFC). Synchrotron X-ray thermodiffraction in air shows a phase transition from orthorhombic Pmmm to tetragonal P4/mmm space groups at ~ 425&deg;C. The chemical compatibility with Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 (GDC) electrolyte was investigated in air where certain reactivity was observed above 800 &deg;C. However, the main phase is Ba(Ce1-xYx)O3, a good ionic conductor. The catalytic performance in air was obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements on YBC/GDC/YBC symmetrical cells. The area specific resistance (ASR) values change from 13.66 to 0.14 &Omega; cm2 between 500 and 800 &deg;C, with activation energy (Ea) of 0.41 eV. The results suggest potential applications of YBC as IT-SOFC cathode.</div>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Galectins, soluble lectins widely expressed intra- and extracellularly in different cell types, play major roles in<br />deciphering the cellular glycocode. Galectin-1 (Gal-1), a prototype member of this family, presents a carbohydrate<br />recognition domain (CRD) with specific affinity for &beta;-galactosides such as N-acetyllactosamine (&beta;-D-Galp-(1<br />&rarr; 4)-D-GlcpNAc), and mediate numerous physiological and pathological processes.<br />In this work, Gal-1 binding affinity for &beta;-(1 &rarr; 6) galactosides, including &beta;-D-Galp-(1 &rarr; 6)-&beta;-D-GlcpNAc-(1 &rarr; 4)-<br />D-GlcpNAc was evaluated, and their performance was compared to that of &beta;-(1 &rarr; 4) and &beta;-(1 &rarr; 3) galactosides.<br />To this end, the trisaccharide &beta;-D-Galp-(1 &rarr; 6)-&beta;-D-GlcpNAc-(1 &rarr; 4)-D-GlcpNAc was enzymatically synthesized, purified and structurally characterized.<br />To evaluate the affinity of Gal-1 for the galactosides, competitive solid phase assays (SPA) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) studies were carried out. The experimental dissociation constants and binding energies obtained were compared to those calculated by molecular docking. These analyses evidenced the critical role of the glycosidic linkage between the terminal galactopyranoside residue and the adjacent monosaccharide, as galactosides bearing &beta;-(1 &rarr; 6) glycosidic linkages showed dissociation constants six- and seven-fold higher than those involving &beta;-(1 &rarr; 4) and &beta;-(1 &rarr; 3) linkages, respectively. Moreover, docking experiments revealed the presence of hydrogen bond interactions between the N-acetyl group of the glucosaminopyranose moiety of the evaluated galactosides and specific amino acid residues of Gal 1, relevant for galectin-glycan affinity. Noticeably, the binding free energies (&Delta;Gcbainlcd) derived from the molecular docking were in good agreement with experimental values determined by ITC measurements (&Delta;Gebxinpd), evidencing a good correlation between theoretical and experimental approaches, which validates the in silico simulations and constitutes an important tool for the rational design of future optimized ligands.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>
