    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The concurrent use of CATA questions (check-all-that-apply) with hedonic scaling in product research with consumers has gained acceptance in recent years. However, CATA questions do not enable product developers to identify consumers&rsquo; preferred intensity of a sensory attribute directly, and for this reason just-about-right (JAR) questions are sometimes used together with questions that quantify attribute presence and/or intensity. Using JAR questions, consumers have to describe each of the samples in terms of each specific attribute, typically: 1 = &lsquo;Not enough&hellip;&rsquo;, 3 = &lsquo;Just about right&rsquo;, and 5 = &lsquo;Much too&hellip;&rsquo;. Past research has suggested that co-elicitation of hedonic and JAR responses bias the hedonic data. This undesired effect could extend to the case where JAR questions are used concurrently with hedonic and CATA questions. In seven studies (N = 762) across seven product categories no such evidence was found. Additionally, there was some evidence pointing to an increase in product discrimination based on hedonic and CATA responses. Preliminary data indicated that the inclusion of JAR questions in product tests also eliciting hedonic and CATA responses did not negatively affect consumers&rsquo; perception of the task, which, on average, was still regarded as easy and not tedious. Future research is required to validate the findings across more varied experimental settings.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<p>(Acetonitrile-1&kappa;N)[&mu;-1H-benzimidazole-2(3H)-thione-1:2&kappa;2 S:S][1H-benzimidazole-2(3H)-thione-2&kappa;S]bis(&mu;-1,1-dioxo-1&lambda;6,2-benzothiazole-3-thiolato-1:2&kappa;2S3:N;1:2&kappa;2 S3:S3)-dicopper(I)(Cu-Cu), [Cu2(C7H4NO2S2)2(C7H6N2S)2(CH3CN)] or [Cu2(tsac)2(Sbim)2(CH3CN)] [tsac is thiosaccharinate and Sbim is 1H-benzimidazole-2(3H)-thione], (1), is a new copper(I) compd. that consists of a triply bridged dinuclear Cu-Cu unit. In the complex mol., two tsac anions and one neutral Sbim ligand bind the metals. One anion bridges via the endocyclic N and exocyclic S atoms (&mu;-S:N). The other anion and one of the mercaptobenzimidazole mols. bridge the metals through their exocyclic S atoms (&mu;-S:S). The 2nd Sbim ligand coordinates in a monodentate fashion (&kappa;S) to one Cu atom, while an acetonitrile mol. coordinates to the other Cu atom. The CuI-CuI distance [2.6286(6) &Aring;] can be considered a strong cuprophilic interaction. In the case of [&mu;-1H-benzimidazole-2(3H)-thione-1:2&kappa;2 S:S]bis[1H-benzimidazole-2(3H)-thione]-1&kappa;S;2&kappa;S-bis(&mu;-1,1-dioxo-1&lambda;6,2-benzothiazole-3-thiolato)-1:2&kappa;2 S3:N;1:2&kappa;2S3:S3-dicopper(I) (Cu-Cu), [Cu2(C7H4NO2S2)2(C7H6N2S)3] or [Cu2(tsac)2(Sbim)3] (2), the acetonitrile mol. is substituted by an addnl.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Digital marketing has seen a rapid rise in the last decade as a consequence of the increased popularity of social media. However, few studies so far have analyzed the prevalence and persuasive power of digital marketing of ultra-processed products. The present study aimed at: (i) analyzing the content of Instagram posts of ultra processed products through the lens of the heuristic-systematic model, and (ii) evaluating the influence of the content of the posts on user interactions. A search for Instagram accounts of ultra-processed products was per formed using a master list of products commercialized in the two most popular online supermarkets in Uruguay. For each of the identified Instagram accounts, all the content posted in a 6-month period was recorded (August 15th, 2020 to February 15th, 2021). The posts were analyzed using content analysis based on inductive coding, and gradient boosting models (GBMs) were used to address the second study objective. A total of 2178 Instagram posts promoting specific ultra-processed products or brands were identified. The posts included a diverse set of cues to trigger both systematic and heuristic processing. References to the pleasure derived from product con sumption as well as health-related cues were most prevalent. The GBM showed that references to contests and raffles and invitations to interact encouraged users to engage with the posts through posting comments. Taken together, results stress the need to implement comprehensive regulatory approaches to reduce exposure to and the power of digital marketing of ultra-processed products given the harmful health-related consequences associated with excessive consumption of such products]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Objective: The aim of this study was to explore and analyse the actions implemented by civil society to contribute to food security in the context of the COVID-19 outbreak in Uruguay, a high-income country in South America.<br />Design: An exploratory systematic approach was used to identify the contributions of civil society to food security through reports in news websites and Facebook<br />posts. Data were analysed based on content analysis following a deductive&ndash;inductive approach.<br />Setting: Uruguay, Latin America.<br />Results: A total of 1220 civil society organisations were identified, which developed two main actions to increase access to food among the Uruguayan population: food baskets and &lsquo;community pots&rsquo; (also known as &lsquo;common pots&rsquo;). Most of the<br />initiatives targeted citizens under socioeconomic vulnerability in the face of COVID-19, without specifying any specific requirement or population segment.<br />Actions were mainly led by spontaneously organised community groups, and, to a lesser extent, by consolidated organisations. Interactions between organisations were identified. The foods provided by the organisations were mostly aligned with national dietary guidelines. Social media posts evidenced that the main challenge faced by organisations was related to the lack of funds or supplies.<br />Conclusions: Results from this work suggest that the lack of funds or supplies poses challenges to the medium- and long-term contributions of civil society to food security and stresses the need for comprehensive governmental measures to guarantee food security amongst Uruguayan citizens.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In this study, activated biochar was produced using pilot-scale technologies of fast pyrolysis and activation to create desirable morphology, surface chemistry, and adsorptive properties for application in supercapacitors. First, residues from white birch were converted into biochar by fast pyrolysis (~ 450 &deg;C). Then, physical (using CO2) or chemical (using KOH) activation was carried out in a homemade pilot-scale furnace at 900 &deg;C. These synthesized materials presented distinct porosity structures: micro-/mesoporous (CO2 material) and highly microporous (KOH material), reaching surface areas of up to 1700 m2 g&minus;1. Electrochemical results showed that KOH-activated biochar had higher specific electrical capacitance in both acidic and neutral electrolytes with a maximum specific capacitance value of 350 and 118 F g&minus;1 at 1 A g&minus;1, respectively; while, for CO2-activated biochar, the maximum obtained values were 204 and 14 F g&minus;1. The greater proportion of oxygenated and nitrogenated functional groups on the surface of the KOH activated biochar, along with its high surface area (with wider porosity), improved its performance as a supercapacitor electrode. Specifically, the low proportion of ultramicropores was determinant for its better electrochemical behavior, especially in the neutral electrolyte. Indeed, these results are similar to those found in the literature on the electrical capacitance of carbonaceous materials synthesized in a small-scale furnace. Thus, the chemical-activated biochar made from wood residues in pilot-scale furnaces is a promising material for use as electrodes for supercapacitors.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The novel Re(II) complex NBu4[Re(NO)Br4(Hnic)] (1) and the heterodinuclear compounds [Re(NO)Br4(&mu;-nic)Ni(dmphen)2]&middot;&frac12;CH3CN (2), [Re(NO)Br4(&mu;-nic)Co(dmphen)2]&middot;&frac12;MeOH (3), [Re(NO)Br4(&mu;-nic)Mn(dmphen)(H2O)2]&middot;dmphen (4), [Re(NO)Br4(&mu;-nic)Cu(bipy)2] (5) [Re(NO)Br4(&mu;-nic)Cu(dmphen)2] (5&prime;) (NBu4+ = tetra-n-butylammonium cation, Hnic = 3-pyridinecarboxylic acid, dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, bipy = 2,2&prime;-bipyridine) have been prepared and the structures of 1&ndash;5 determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of 1 consists of [Re(NO)Br4(Hnic)]&minus; anions and NBu4+ cations. Each Re(II) is six-coordinate with four bromide ligands, a linear nitrosyl group and a nitrogen atom from the Hnic molecule, in a distorted octahedral surrounding. The structures of 2&ndash;5 are made up of discrete heterodinuclear Re(II)M(II) units where the fully deprotonated [Re(NO)Br4(nic)]2&minus; entity acts as a didentate ligand through the carboxylate group towards the [Ni(dmphen)2]2+ (2), [Co(dmphen)2]2+ (3), [Mn(dmphen)(H2O)2]2+ (4) and [Cu(bipy)2]2+ (5) fragments, the Re&ndash;M separation across the nic bridge being 7.8736(8) (2), 7.9632(10) (3), 7.7600(6) (4) and 8.2148(7) &Aring; (5). The environment of the Re(II) ion in 2&ndash;5 is the same as that in 1 and all M(II) are six-coordinate in highly distorted octahedral surroundings, the main source of the distortion being due to the reduced bite of the chelating carboxylate. The magnetic properties of 1&ndash;5&prime; were investigated in the temperature range 1.9&ndash;300 K. 1 behaves as a quasi-magnetically isolated spin doublet with very weak antiferromagnetic interactions through space Br⋯Br contacts. Its magnetic susceptibility data were successfully modeled through a deep analysis of the influence of the ligand field, spin&ndash;orbit coupling, tetragonal distortion and covalence effects as variable parameters. Compounds 2&ndash;5&prime; exhibit weak antiferromagnetic interactions. The intramolecular exchange pathway in this family being discarded because of the symmetry of magnetic orbitals of the Re(II) ion (dxy) precludes any spin delocalization on the bridging nic orbitals, the observed magnetic interactions are most likely mediated by &pi;&ndash;&pi; type interactions between the peripheral ligands which occur in them. Only in the case of 4, short through space Br⋯Br contacts of ca. 4.03 &Aring; (values larger than 5.5 &Aring; in 2, 3 and 5) could be involved in the exchange coupling.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:title><![CDATA[<strong>The dimerization shift of the OH-stretching fundamentals of the water dimer.</strong>]]></dcterms:title>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The interpretation of the gas-phase and matrix-isolation vibrational spectra of the water dimer and monomer had led to contradictory conclusions as to the effect of dimerization of the OH-stretching fundamentals. Ab initio MPn/6-311+G(2d, 2p) and MPn/+VPs(2d)s calculations (with n=2&ndash;4) have been performed on the water dimer to determine accurately that dimerization shift. In order to assess the quality of the computational results, frequency shifts were calculated at the same level also for several other binary complexes involving hydrogen bonds, and for which there are not large discrepancies between the gas-phase and solid-matrix data. Full geometry optimization of the complexes was performed. Analytically (SCF, MP2) or numerically (MP3, MP4) determined frequencies at the optimized geometries were employed to obtain the frequency shifts in question. In all cases a satisfactory agreement between the theoretical and solid-matrix data was found. SCF calculations underestimate and MP2 calculations overestimate the shifts in all cases. However, in only one of the complexes studied, the N2&middot;HF dimer, were the MP2 results far off the experimental ones. Both in this case and for the water dimer it was necessary to use a higher order of perturbation theory (MP3, MP4) to calculate the correlation correction, in order to obtain satisfactory convergence of the frequency shifts. In conclusion, our theoretical calculations indicate that the gas-phase experimental data on the dimerization shift of the OH fundamentals of the water dimer need to be reinterpreted. As a side result, we suggest a reassignment of the &nu;3 vibrational transition of the water monomer, performed in the recent experiments of water trapped in a Ne solid matrix.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Pantoea ananatis is a gram-negative bacterium and the primary causal agent of center rot of onions in Georgia. Previous genomic studies identified two virulence gene clusters, HiVir and alt, associated with center rot. The HiVir gene cluster is required to induce necrosis on onion tissues via synthesis of pantaphos, (2-hydroxy[phosphonomethyl) maleate), a phosphonate phytotoxin. The alt gene cluster aids in tolerance<br />to thiosulfinates generated during onion tissue damage. Whole genome sequencing of other Pantoea species suggests that these gene clusters are present outside of P. ananatis. To assess the distribution of these gene clusters, two PCR primer sets were designed to detect the presence of HiVir and alt. Two hundred fifty-two strains of Pantoea spp. were phenotyped using the red onion scale necrosis (RSN) assay and were genotyped using PCR for the presence of these virulence genes. A diverse panel of strains from three distinct culture collections comprised of 24 Pantoea species, 41 isolation sources, and 23 countries, collected from 1946&ndash;2019, was tested. There is a<br />significant association between the alt PCR assay and Pantoea strains recovered from symptomatic onion (P &lt; 0.001). There is also a significant association of a positive HiVir PCR and RSN assay among P. ananatis strains but not among Pantoea spp.,<br />congeners. This may indicate a divergent HiVir cluster or different pathogenicity and virulence mechanisms.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A sticking probability model based on the average cluster lifetime is employed for deducing a kernel capable to describe the kinetics of computer simulated irreversible aggregation processes in two dimensions. The deduced kernel describes not only the time evolution of the cluster size distribution for diusion limited aggregation (DLCA) and reaction limited aggregation (RLCA) but also for the entire transition region between both regimes. The model predicts a crossover to diusion limited cluster aggre- gation for all sticking probabilities at long aggregation times. The time needed for reaching the DLCA limit increases for decreasing sticking probability.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>BACKGROUND: Scavenger Receptors (SRs) from the host's innate immune system are known to bind multiple ligands to promote the removal of non-self or altered-self targets. CD5 and CD6 are two highly homologous class I SRs mainly expressed on all T cells and the B1a cell subset, and involved in the fine tuning of activation and differentiation signals delivered by the antigen-specific receptors (TCR and BCR, respectively), to which they physically associate. Additionally, CD5 and CD6 have been shown to interact with and sense the presence of conserved pathogen-associated structures from bacteria, fungi and/or viruses.METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We report herein the interaction of CD5 and CD6 lymphocyte surface receptors with Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.). Binding studies show that both soluble and membrane-bound forms of CD5 and CD6 bind to intact viable protoscoleces from E. granulosus s.l. through recognition of metaperiodate-resistant tegumental components. Proteomic analyses allowed identification of thioredoxin peroxidase for CD5, and peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase (cyclophilin) and endophilin B1 (antigen P-29) for CD6, as their potential interactors. Further in vitro assays demonstrate that membrane-bound or soluble CD5 and CD6 forms differentially modulate the pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine release induced following peritoneal cells exposure to E. granulosus s.l. tegumental components. Importantly, prophylactic infusion of soluble CD5 or CD6 significantly ameliorated the infection outcome in the mouse model of secondary cystic echinococcosis. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Taken together, the results expand the pathogen binding properties of CD5 and CD6 and provide novel evidence for their therapeutic potential in human cystic echinococcosis</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Background: Lactam cyclized alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (&alpha;-MSH) analogues exhibit high stability and affinity for the MC1-R receptors over expressed in melanoma cells. Recently, we reported a novel <sup>99m</sup>Tc-HYNIC-cycMSH<sub>4-13</sub> analogue with the HYNIC chelator directly attached to the lactam cyclized ring. Objective: In this study we proposed the introduction of a 6-aminohexanoic acid (Ahx) linker between the HYNIC chelator and lactam cyclized peptide cycMSH4-13 to reduce steric hindrance and improve the melanoma targeting and imaging proprieties of the radiolabeled peptide. Method: HYNIC-Ahx-cycMSH<sub>4-13</sub> peptide was synthesized on an automated peptide synthesizer and displayed an IC50 of 0.3 nM using B16/F1 cells. The 99mTc/tricine radiolabeled peptide was examined for radiochemical purity, stability and cell binding. In vivo, biodistribution and planar gamma imaging studies were performed in B16/F1 melanoma tumor bearing C57BK mice. Results: <sup>99m</sup>Tc-HYNIC-Ahx-cycMSH<sub>4-13</sub> was obtained with a radiochemical purity &gt;95%, was stable up to 24 h at room temperature and exhibited high binding and rapid internalization in B16/F1 cells. In vivo biodistribution studies showed a tumor uptake of 4.92 &plusmn; 0.92 % ID/g and 2.78 &plusmn; 1.48 % ID/g at 2 h and 4 h post injection, respectively. Whole-body clearance was rapid through urinary excretion. The melanoma tumors were clearly visualized by planar gamma imaging. Conclusion: <sup>99m</sup>Tc-HYNIC-Ahx-cycMSH<sub>4-13</sub> was shown radiochemically stability and exhibited rapid and selective uptake in melanoma cells and tumors. Imaging studies yielded promising preclinical results, warranting further evaluation of <sup>99m</sup>Tc-HYNIC-cycMSH analogs as melanoma specific imaging agent]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[During malolactic fermentation (MLF), lactic acid bacteria influence aroma and flavor of wines by the production of volatile metabolites and the modification of aroma compounds derived from grapes and yeasts. In an effort to isolate these bacteria properties as advantages for winemaking, this study aimed to assess the relative contribution of two aspects: the effects of lactic acid bacteria activity on the volatiles compounds in Tannat wines and the consequences of aging in bottle on aroma compounds produced during MLF. To our knowledge, this is the first report related to the effect of wine aging in bottle on the aroma chemical compounds produced by MLF. Solid phase extraction complemented with chromatographic techniques was used to study the wine aroma compounds. A sensory evaluation of the wines was also performed through descriptive methods. We demonstrated modifications in the concentration of acetates, ethyl esters, and other secondary metabolites during MLF. Major sensorial differences between wines that had undergone MLF were also noted. In addition, some modifications detected in the composition of Tannat wines as a consequence of the aging in bottle contributed to the change in differences between wines with and without MLF and furthermore between strains. These changes probably influence its fruity character.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In this work we present the preparation and characterization of new fluoroborate glasses doped with Yb3 + and Er3 + and modified by Ca, Sr and Ba oxides. Glasses with compositions (100-x-y) (MO &sdot; 2B2O3) + x NaF + y (YbF3:ErF3) (% in mol), where M is Sr, Ba, Ca, x = 10&ndash;30% and y = 0, 1 or 5% were prepared by the melt/quenching technique. Glass forming ability and stability were studied by thermal analysis and it is shown that calcium samples presented the highest stability. The nature of the modifier cation has also shown a direct influence on the absolute and relative intensities of the rare earth ions transitions in the visible and near-infrared regions. Though the calcium samples present lower absorption intensities, they display the best up- and down-conversion efficiencies. There are evidences that the incorporation of the fluoride compound leads to a fluorine rich environment on the first coordination sphere of the RE, decreasing the probability of OH&ndash; groups &ndash; well known quenchers of RE emissions. Though preliminary, the results in this study can become of relevance for the field of solar cell technology improvement via betterment of solar light harvesting in the infrared and ultraviolet regions.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Here, we present a proof-of-concept approach to study the effect of critical micelle concentration on alkyl sulfonate amphiphilic species response using organic electrochemical transistors (OECT) working in the accumulation mode. First of all, the drastic enhancement of the OECT response allows us to estimate the critical micelle concentration of alkyl sulfonate amphiphilic species yielding quite similar values compared to bulk solution conductivity experiments reported in the literature. Above the critical micelle concentration (i.e. 100 mM), the best responsive OECT devices yielded ON/OFF ratios of 30–60, maximum normalized transconductance of g max ¼ 1:99 1:39 mS cm 1 and threshold voltage of Vth = 0.39–0.55 V at Vg = 1.0 V. Our impedance spectroscopy studies performed at ON and OFF modes suggested that, in the presence of a sufficiently strong negative gate voltage (Vg = 1.0 V), not only the sodium counterions are ejected from the interface, but also the amphiphilic molecules from the monolayer probably reverse their orientation and get injected into the P3HT region. In this scenario, the sulfonate groups of the amphiphilic species synchronously induce doping of P3HT thus leading to a drastic enhancement of the channel current above the critical micelle concentration. Our results indicate that OECT devices represent a promising platform to estimate the critical micelle concentration of amphiphilic species but also to study the formation of amphiphilic monolayers of more complex systems of biological interest.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The usage of alternative synonymous codons in the completely sequenced, extremely A+T-rich parasite Plasmodium falciparum was studied. Confirming previous studies obtained with less than 3% of the total genes recently described, we found that A- and U-ending triplets predominate but translational selection increases the frequency of a subset of codons in highly expressed genes. However, some new results come from the analysis of the complete sequence. First, there is more variation in GC3 than previously described; second, the effect of natural selection acting at the level of translation has been analysed with real expression data at 4 different stages and third, we found that highly expressed proteins increment the frequency of energetically less expensive amino acids.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The goal of the present work was to evaluate whether the Maillard reaction, with glucose and lactose as substrates, improves the foaming properties of b-lactoglobulin. Lactose led to the lowest degree of modification without significant differences by reaction time and by protein:sugar molar ratio. However, in the case of glucose, the degree of glycation increases with reaction time and molar ratio. The results obtained by UV fluorescence, surface hydrophobicity and differential scanning calorimetry clearly showed differences in the degree of folding of b-lactoglobulin upon modification with different sugars or thermal treatment, with changes in the foaming capacity of b-lactoglobulin. All the modified samples exhibited a significant increase (a 6 0.05) in draining stability (Kg) as compared to the non-thermally treated sample. In addition, foams formed by lactose-glycated samples were more stable than those formed by glucose-glycated ones. A significant increase (a 6 0.05) of foam stability with reaction time was also detected, particularly in glucose-glycated samples.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>The creaming, flocculation and coalescence processes of destabilization of emulsions prepared with glycated b-lactoglobulin was analyzed. The glycation process was carried out with glucose and lactose in different reaction conditions (reaction time and protein:carbohydrate molar ratio) The glycation of blactoglobulin with both with glucose and lactose causes an increase in the stability of oilewater emulsions. It was found that the process of creaming had a sigmoid behavior which fit to an equation with two parameters, one with hyperbolic and other with sigmoidal kinetics and is directly related to particle size of the dispersed phase of the emulsion. b-lactoglobulin glycated with lactose emulsions showed greater stability to creaming than those prepared with b-lactoglobulin glycated with glucose, which was related to the decrease in the particle size of the dispersed phase and the increased concentration of protein at the interface of the emulsions. Flocculation and coalescence were not influenced by the glycation.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Sugar reduction in beverages can contribute to reduce consumption of this nutrient and to improve the health status of the population. However, such reduction can negatively affect consumer perception. Label information can be an effective tool to increase consumer interest in sugar-reduced products. In this context, the aim of the present work was to study the influence of health/hedonic claims on consumer hedonic and sensory perception of sugar reduction in orange/passionfruit nectars under expected and informed conditions. Sugar-reduced orange/passionfruit nectars (20% and 40% reduced in added sugar) featuring different claims (none, health claim or hedonic claim) were evaluated, together with a control product without reduction. Following a between-subjects experimental design, 206 participants evaluated the nectars under two experimental conditions: (a) expected, looking at the packages, and (b) informed, looking at the packages and tasting the nectars. In each experimental condition, participants evaluated their overall liking using a 9-point hedonic scale and answered a check-all-that-apply questions related to the sensory characteristics of the nectars. Results showed that although consumers did not have negative expectations about sugar-reduced nectars, the sensory characteristics of the products were the main determinants of consumers' hedonic reaction towards the nectars. The influence of claims on consumers' perception was modulated by their hedonic sensitivity towards sugar-reduction. The hedonic claim increased overall liking of those consumers with low hedonic sensitivity towards sugar reduction, whereas it had the opposite effect on the most sensitive consumers. Results from the present work suggest that although hedonic claims hold potential for a consumer segment, care must be taken to avoid the generation of unrealistic expectations about the sensory characteristics of sugar-reduced products.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In this report, we studied the effect of the addition of manganite nanoparticles on the microstructure and magnetotransport properties of polyaniline polymers. We showed experimental results on the fractal dimension of the polyaniline&ndash;manganite nanocomposites by means of small angle X-ray scattering measurements. A decrease in the number of polarons is observed for the composite with a concentration of 20% manganite nanoparticles. On the other hand, for the same concentration, the presence of a low magnetic field increases the number of polarons, in relation to an enhancement of the negative low field magnetoresistance (LFMR). This enhancement was observed for a critical amount of manganite nanoparticle addition in the whole temperature regime analyzed, as envisaged from the low magnetic field dependence in the polyaniline polaron formation observed using confocal Raman spectroscopy at room temperature.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Herein, we report on the structural, chemical reactivity and electronic properties of dual-doped bilayer graphene (DDBG). Only one of the layers was doped with a pair of 3p&ndash;2p elements. Aluminum was the only dopant which prefers to interact with the undoped layer. The interlayer interaction energies of DDBG are smaller than those determined for bilayer graphene, except for AlN and AlO DDBG. This effect is due to the presence of weak Al&ndash;C interlayer bonds. The dopants increase the reactivity of both the doped and undoped layers. Interestingly, we found that hydrogenation is a method that can be used to switch on/off the interlayer bonding, as it controlled the X&ndash;C interlayer distance (X = Al, Si, P, S). The magnetic moment of the systems can be adjusted by the position of the 3p dopant. In effect, when X interacts with the doped layer, the magnetic moment is reduced, while it is maintained when X fails to interact. Finally, we found that the doped layer is able to break the symmetry of the undoped sheet and small gaps can be opened in the band structure of the undoped layer. As observed for single doped monolayer graphene, the most effective element for such purposes is P, which opened gaps close to 0.2 eV. For SiN DDBG, the spin filtering properties are enhanced with respect to the monolayered structure.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Ophidian accidents are a serious public health problem in Argentina; the Bothrops species is responsible for 97% of these accidents, and in particular, B. diporus is responsible for 80% of them. In the northeast of the country (Corrientes Provinces), Cissampelos pareira L. (Menispermaceae) is commonly used against the venom of B. diporus; its use is described in almost all ethnobotanical literature from countries where the plant grows. AIM OF THE STUDY: In this study, the in vitro and in vivo antivenom activities of C. pareira extracts were evaluated against B. diporus venom, with a particular focus on the local effects associated with envenoming. The seasonal influence on the chemical composition of the active extracts was also studied, in order determine the associated range of variability and its influence on the antivenom activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This research was conducted using aerial parts (leaves, flowers, tender stems) and roots of Cissampelos pareira collected from two different phytogeographic regions of Corrientes (Argentina); Paso de la Patria and Lomas de Vallejos. In addition, to perform a seasonal analysis and to evaluate the metabolic stability, material was collected at three different growth stages. In vivo and in vitro anti-snake venom activities were tested, and a bio-guided chromatographic separation was performed in order to determine the active chemicals involved. The fractions obtained were analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and the chemical profile of the most active constituent was analyzed by ultra high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole/high-resolution mass spectrometry (Q-Orbitrap). RESULTS: The alcoholic extract was found to be the most active The bio-guided fractionation allowed selection one fraction to be analyzed by UHPLC-MS in order to identify the components responsible for the activities found; this identified five possible flavonoids. CONCLUSIONS: Our studies of the activity of C. pareira against the venom of B. diporus have confirmed that this species possesses inhibitory effects in both in vitro and in vivo models. Moreover, the present data demonstrate that certain flavonoids may mitigate some of the venom-induced local tissue damage.]]></dcterms:abstract>
