It had been found that Cu underpotential deposition on polycrystalline Pd exhibits different potentiodynamic features, which are characteristic of defined crystallographic planes of Pd. However, these features varied when the voltammograms were performed in the presence of strongly adsorbable anions, such as I–. In spite of having found a partial inhibition of the Cu voltammetric features in the presence of I–, we calculated integer numbers in the electron transfer to Cu2+and I–ions. The change in the values of Cu massive deposition potential due to the presence of I–was caused by the appearence of a new electrode, that is, the Cu/CuI/I–interface.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Labels have been reported to influence children’s perception and choice of foods. However, the influence of label information on parents’ food choices for their children has not received as much attention in the literature yet. In this context, the objectives of the present study were: i) to evaluate the impact of label information on parents’ healthiness perception and choice of two popular snack products, and ii) to explore individual differences in how label design influences parents’ healthiness perception and their choice of snack products for their children. A total of 1213 Uruguayan mothers participated in an online survey. A choice-based conjoint test was performed to study the influence of cartoon characters, nutritional claims and nutrient content information on the choice and healthiness perception of chocolate milk and sponge cake labels. Half of the parents were asked to indicate which of the products they would choose as a snack for their children and the other half were asked which of the products was healthier. Data was analyzed by means of a Mixed Logit Model followed by multivariate approaches to explore individual differences (Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis). Results showed that, regardless of the product, nutrient claim had the strongest effect, increasing healthiness perception and encouraging mothers’ choice. For both choice and healthiness perception, two groups of mothers who differed in the relative importance attached to cartoon characters and nutrient content were identified, highlighting the need to investigate individual differences. Results stress the need to regulate the use of nutritional claims, cartoon characters, and other persuasive elements in products of poor nutritional quality targeted at children.

The incorporation of the bpy ligand in place of cyano ligands within the coordination sphere raises the MIII/II redox potential significantly relative to the hexacyanometalate analogswe have reported previously. However, the metal-to-metal (MII to CoIII) charge-transfer transitions are shifted to lower energies in accordance with Hush theory as a result of a decreased reorganizational energy component, which result in them overlapping with more intense MLCT (MII to bpy) transitions.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The inhibition of Ni electrodissolution in H2SO4 solutions containing carbon monoxide, ethylene or acetylene was investigated after adsorption equilibrium at room temperature. The interaction of these molecules with Ni was followed by the anodic stripping of adsorbed residues. The Ni electrodissolution inhibitory effect caused by the different adsorbates increases in the following order: ethylene < carbon monoxide < acetylene. Anodic stripping curves were simulated by applying a numerical method, such as Runge-Kutta's, and the different voltammetric contributions calculated by numeric deconvolution. These analyses provide a further insight into the mechanism of the Ni electrodissolution in acid containing carbon monoxide, ethylene or acetylene.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Plant growth-promoting bacteria of the genus Azospirillum are present in the rhizosphere and as endophytes of many crops. In this research we studied 40 Azospirillum strains isolated from different plants and geographic regions. They were first characterized by 16S rDNA restriction analysis, and their phylogenetic position was established by sequencing the genes 16S rDNA, ipdC, hisC1, and hisC2. The latter three genes are involved in the indole-3-pyruvic acid (IPyA) biosynthesis pathway of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Furthermore, the suitability of the 16S-23S rDNA intergenic spacer sequence (IGS) for the differentiation of closely related Azospirillum taxa and development of PCR protocols allows for specific detection of strains. The IGS-RFLP analysis enabled intraspecies differentiation, particularly of Azospirillum brasilense and Azospirillum lipoferum strains. Results demonstrated that the ipdC, hisC1, and hisC2 genes are highly conserved in all the assessed A. brasilense isolates, suggesting that these genes can be used as an alternative phylogenetic marker. In addition, IAA production determined by HPLC ranged from 0.17 to 98.2 μg mg(-1) protein. Southern hybridization with the A. brasilense ipdC gene probe did not show, a hybridization signal with A. lipoferum, Azospirillum amazonense, Azospirillum halopreferans and Azospirillum irakense genomic DNA. This suggests that these species produce IAA by other pathways. Because IAA is mainly synthesized via the IPyA pathway in A. brasilense strains, a species that is used worldwide in agriculture, the identification of ipdC, hisC1, and hisC2 genes by PCR may be suitable for selecting exploitable strains</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Contextual factors influence consumers’ food choice and consumption decisions. The measurement of perceived situational appropriateness provides information on these influences and is easily implemented in product test situations, especially when done using the item-by-use (IBU) method. The research presents a methodological characterisation of the IBU approach when implemented as check-all-that-apply (CATA) questions. Across 14 consumer studies (33–206 people per study), four research questions (RQ) were addressed. It was found that: 1) Co-elicitation of IBU responses did not bias hedonic responses, and hedonic responses were not modulated by the type of IBU terms used (descriptive vs. emotive) (RQ1); 2) IBU responses may be modulated by co-elicitation with hedonic responses, but not by sample set composition (RQ2); 3) IBU responses were repeatable following assessments of within- and between-study responses (RQ3); and 4) For sample sizes typical in product testing research with consumers (100+), IBU responses are likely to be stable, and if differences between samples are large, they may be stable when obtained from fewer people (30+) (RQ4). An underpinning assumption of the research, that IBU responses provide product insights beyond hedonic responses (RA1) was also empirically confirmed. In summary, the findings from the present research supports the use of the CATA questions to obtain IBU sample characterisations and enhance product testing.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>A key metabolic adaptation of some species that face hypoxia as part of their life cycle involves an alternative electron transport chain in which rhodoquinone (RQ) is required for fumarate reduction and ATP production. RQ biosynthesis in bacteria and protists requires ubiquinone (Q) as a precursor. In contrast, Q is not a precursor for RQ biosynthesis in animals such as parasitic helminths, and most details of this pathway have remained elusive. Here, we used Caenorhabditis elegans as a model animal to elucidate key steps in RQ biosynthesis. Using RNAi and a series of C. elegans mutants, we found that arylamine metabolites from the kynurenine pathway are essential precursors for RQ biosynthesis de novo. Deletion of kynu-1, encoding a kynureninase that converts l-kynurenine (KYN) to anthranilic acid (AA) and 3-hydroxykynurenine (3HKYN) to 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (3HAA), completely abolished RQ biosynthesis but did not affect Q levels. Deletion of kmo-1, which encodes a kynurenine 3-monooxygenase that converts KYN to 3HKYN, drastically reduced RQ but not Q levels. Knockdown of the Q biosynthetic genes coq-5 and coq-6 affected both Q and RQ levels, indicating that both biosynthetic pathways share common enzymes. Our study reveals that two pathways for RQ biosynthesis have independently evolved. Unlike in bacteria, where amination is the last step in RQ biosynthesis, in worms the pathway begins with the arylamine precursor AA or 3HAA. Because RQ is absent in mammalian hosts of helminths, inhibition of RQ biosynthesis may have potential utility for targeting parasitic infections that cause important neglected tropical diseases.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The laminated layer is the unique mucin-based extracellular matrix that protects Echinococcus larvae, and thus to an important extent, shapes host–parasite relationships in the larval echinococcoses. In 2011, we published twin reviews summarizing what was known about this structure. Since then, important advances have been made. Complete genomes and some RNAseq data are now available for E. multilocularis and E. granulosus, leading to the inference that the E. multilocularis LL is probably formed by a single type of mucin backbone, while a second apomucin subfamily additionally contributes to the E. granulosus LL. Previously suspected differences between E. granulosus and E. multilocularis in mucin glycan size have been confirmed and pinned down to the virtual absence of Galβ1–3 chains in E. multilocularis. The LL carbohydrates from both species have been found to interact selectively with the Kupffer cell receptor expressed in rodent liver macrophages, highlighting the ancestral adaptations to rodents as intermediate hosts and to the liver as infection site. Finally, LL particles have been shown to possess carbohydrate-independent mechanisms profoundly conditioning non-liver-specific dendritic cells and macrophages. These advances are discussed in an integrated way, and in the context of the newly determined phylogeny of Echinococcus and its taenid relatives.

</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Several ZnO nanostructures such as nanosheets, nanotubes and quantum dots with Wurtzite structure have been prepared and studied as lithium-ion anode materials revealing that the increasing interface is a key aspect to improve their performance. To the best of our knowledge, up to now, there are no reports in the literature that deal directly with lithium-ion transport and charge transfer on ultrathin 2D ZnO exhibiting graphene-like and Wurtzite structures working as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Here, we present a DFT study on the lithiation of ultrathin 2D ZnO nanostructures including graphene-like (monolayer and bilayer) and Wurtzite (trilayer) structures. We focus on the ionic-electronic transport properties addressing the ionic transport through the different surfaces as well as charge transfer, equilibrium voltages, and work function variations due to lithiation for all systems. We reveal interesting features regarding how deep the reduction of Zn ions is still observed allowing more efficient charge transfer for graphene-like and Wurtzite systems working as anode material for a lithium-ion battery.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Background: Invasive fungal diseases represent an unmet clinical need that could 29 benefit from novel immunotherapeutic approaches. Host pattern-recognition receptors 30 (e.g., Toll-like receptors, C-type lectins or Scavenger receptors) that sense conserved 31 fungal cell wall constituents may provide suitable immunotherapeutic antifungal agents. 32 Thus, we explored the therapeutic potential of the lymphocyte class I scavenger receptor 33 CD5, a non-redundant component of the antifungal host immune response that binds to 34 fungal β-glucans. 35 Methods: antifungal properties of the soluble ectodomain of human CD5 (shCD5) were 36 assessed in vivo in experimental models of systemic fungal infection induced by 37 pathogenic species (Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans). In vitro 38 mechanistic studies were performed by means of fungal-spleen cell co-cultures. 39 Results: shCD5-induced survival of lethally infected mice was dose and time-dependent 40 and concomitant with reduced fungal load and increased leukocyte infiltration in 41 primary target organ. Additive effects were observed in vivo after shCD5 was combined 42 with sub-optimal doses of fluconazole. Ex vivo addition of shCD5 to fungal-spleen cell 43 co-cultures increased release of pro-inflammatory cytokines involved in antifungal 44 defence (TNF-α and IFN-γ) and reduced the number of viable C. albicans. 45 Conclusions: The results prompt further exploration of the adjunctive therapeutic 46 potential of shCD5 in severe invasive fungal diseases.

    <dcterms:abstract>The cestodes constitute important but understudied human and veterinary parasites. Their surfaces are rich in carbohydrates, on which very little structural information is available. The tissue-dwelling larva (hydatid cyst) of the cestode Echinococcus granulosus is outwardly protected by a massive layer of carbohydrate-rich extracellular matrix, termed the laminated layer. The monosaccharide composition of this layer suggests that its major carbohydrate components are exclusively mucin-type O-glycans. We have purified these glycans after their release from the crude laminated layer and obtained by MS and NMR the complete structure of 10 of the most abundant components. The structures, between two and six residues in length, encompass a limited number of biosynthetic motifs. The mucin cores 1 and 2 are either nondecorated or elongated by a chain of Galpβ1-3 residues. This chain can be capped by a single GalpR1-4 residue, such capping becoming more dominant with increasing chain size. In addition, the core 2 N-acetylglucosamine residue is in cases substituted with the disaccharide GalpR1-4Galpβ1-4, giving rise to the blood P1-antigen motif. Larger, also related, glycans exist, reaching at least 18 residues in size. The glycans described are related but larger than those previously described from an Echinococcus multilocularis mucin [Hulsmeier, A. J., et al. (2002) J. Biol. Chem. 277, 5742-5748]. Our results reveal that the E. granulosus cyst exposes to the host only a few different major carbohydrate motifs. These motifs are composed essentially of galactose units and include the elongation by (Galpβ1-3)n and the capping by GalpR1-4, novel in animal mucin-type O-glycans</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Benzenoid-derived metabolites act as precursors for a wide variety of products involved in essential metabolic roles in eukaryotic cells. They are synthesised in plants and some fungi through the phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) or tyrosine ammonia lyase (TAL) pathways. Ascomycete yeasts and animals both lack the capacity for PAL/TAL pathways, and metabolic reactions leading to benzenoid synthesis in these organisms have remained incompletely known for decades. Here we show genomic, transcriptomic and metabolomic evidence that yeasts use a mandelate pathway to synthesise benzenoids, with some similarities to pathways used by bacteria. We conducted feeding experiments using a synthetic fermentation medium that contained either 13C-phenylalanine or 13C-tyrosine and, using methylbenzoylphosphonate (MBP) to inhibit benzoylformate decarboxylase, we were able to accumulate intracellular intermediates in the yeast Hanseniaspora vineae. To further confirm this pathway, we tested three mutants in separate fermentation experiments with deletions in the key genes putatively proposed to form benzenoids (Saccharomyces cerevisiae aro10Δ, dld1Δ and dld2Δ). Our results elucidate the mechanism of benzenoid synthesis in yeast through phenylpyruvate linked with the mandelate pathway to produce benzyl alcohol and 4- hydroxybenzaldehyde from the aromatic amino acids, phenylalanine and tyrosine, as well as sugars. These results provide an explanation for the origin of the benzoquinone ring, 4-hydroxybenzoate, and suggest Aro10p has benzoylformate and 4-hydroxybenzoylformate decarboxylase functions in yeast. Keywords: phenylpyruvate pathway, yeast, benzyl alcohol, Hanseniaspora vineae, 4- hydroxybenzoic acid, benzoylformate decarboxylase, ARO10, coenzyme Q.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Ongoing research has shown that emoji can be used by children to discriminate food products, but it is unclear if they express emotions and how they are linked to emotional words. Little is known about how children interpret emoji in terms of their emotional meaning in the context of food. This study aimed at investigating the emotional meaning of emoji used to describe food experiences in 9–13‐year‐old pre‐adolescents and to measure related age and gender differences. The meaning of 46 emoji used to describe food experience was explored by: mapping emoji according to similarities and differences in their emotional meaning using the projective mapping technique, and linking emoji with emotion words using a check‐all‐that‐apply (CATA) format. The two tasks gave consistent results and showed that emoji were discriminated along the valence (positive vs. negative) and power (dominant vs. submissive) dimension, and to a lower extent along the arousal dimension (high vs. low activation). In general, negative emoji had more distinct meanings than positive emoji in both studies, but differences in nuances of meaning were found also among positive emoji. Girls and older pre‐adolescents (12–13 years old (y.o.)) discriminated positive emoji slightly better than boys and younger pre‐adolescents (9–11 y.o.). This suggests that girls and older pre‐adolescents may be higher in emotional granularity (the ability to experience and discriminate emotions), particularly of positive emotions. The results of the present work can be used for the development of an emoji‐based tool to measure emotions elicited by foods in pre‐adolescents.

    <dcterms:abstract>
There is great interest in the study of the optical properties of materials such as glasses, due to their possible technological applications and from a fundamental point of view. For this reason, an attempt has been made to advance the understanding of the existence of optical band gap in this type of material. In recent times, several ways of analyzing the dependence of the absorption coefficient with energy have been proposed. Using lead, strontium, and barium borate glasses as a model, this dependence has been analyzed. For this, we considered the glass structure and the corresponding crystal structure, and the value of the optical band gap energy has been discussed considering the theory of Mott and Davis and comparing with values of crystals and glasses of similar composition. Here, we used a correction method, that takes into account intrinsic defects, to obtain the values of optical band gap energies in the framework of a non-direct transition. We also include DFT simulations of the corresponding crystalline compounds and the band gap was evaluated. The absorption coefficient obtained from simulations shows the same trend that the experimental one.
</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The parallel segmented flow (PSF) chromatography column was applied for the first time to trace residue analyses with mass spectral detection. Three problematic pesticides, notorious for poor peak shape and ionization issues were selected to illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of utilizing the PSF column as an alternative front-end separation interface for LC-MS approaches. Assessment of performance for each pesticide was based on a spiked lemon matrix prepared via a QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, rugged and safe) sample preparation approach. Comparisons were made between assays conducted using a conventional column and a PSF column (operated with a 40% segmentation ratio), each packed with identical stationary phases and of the same column format. Both columns were connected to the MS detector using the exact same connective tubing and electrospray (ESI) conditions. The primary advantage of the PSF column was that it enabled an increase in throughput by at least 2.5 times compared to the conventional HPLC column. At the same time, the volumetric flow to the MS was exactly the same for both the PSF column and the conventional column. Effectively there was no difference in the sensitivity provided by peak areas between the PSF and conventional columns: peak area LOQ values were comparable, 4–9 μg/kg for the PSF and 4–8 μg/kg for the conventional column. This is a vital requirement for food control methods to secure absence at default maximum residue limit (MRL) of 10 μg/kg (10 ppb) level. Since the efficiency of the PSF was superior to that of the conventional column, the peak width of eluting components was reduced by as much as 70% in the former compared to the peak widths on the latter. Hence, the PSF column provides greater peak capacity and this will enable faster analysis of complex samples.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>We studied the comparative antioxidant and anti-glycation activities of Mentha x piperita L., Baccharis trimera Iless. and Peumus boldus Mol, in order to evaluate their potential interest as ingredients in functional foods. The total content of polyphenol compounds was determined by Folin-Ciocalteau assay as their antioxidant and anti-glycation capacities, using ABTS and ORAC for the first one and a model with methylglyoxal and bovine serum albumin for the latter. Then, paraoxonase 1 (PON 1) arylesterase activity was measured as well as apolipoprotein A-1 (ApoA-1) structure by SDS-PAGE, in the presence of an oxidative agent and the herbal extracts. Finally, the same procedure was applied to high density lipoprotein (HDL) particles using a Lipoprint kit. Results show that herbal extracts have a considerable amount of total polyphenols, thus a high antioxidant activity and a considerable anti-glycation activity. Furthermore, these extracts restore PON 1 activity as well as the original configuration of apoA-1 and the distribution of HDL subclasses, favouring anti-atherogenic particles. These herbal extracts are interesting targets to use as ingredients in functional foods.</dcterms:abstract>
