<dcterms:abstract>The effect of partial substitution of lanthanum by magnesium on the catalytic activity of the Ni-La2Zr2O7 catalyst in the biogas tri-reforming reaction was studied. Four catalysts, Ni-La2-xMgxZr2O7-δ (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1), were prepared using a modified polymeric precursor method, characterized using several techniques, and evaluated at 800 ◦C with a sub-stoichiometric molar feed composition of CH4/CO2/H2O/O2 = 1/0.33/0.33/0.08. The catalyst with x = 0.5 showed the best performance, which is attributed to its optimum properties of nickel particle size, metal-support interactions, and basicity. A stability test was performed with this catalyst using a molar feed composition of CH4/CO2/H2O/O2 = 1/0.33/0.67/0.08, previously optimized to obtain a synthesis gas with a H2/CO ≈ 2 molar ratio for 100 h, and compared with a commercial steam reforming catalyst. The catalyst with x = 0.5 exhibited higher CH4 and CO2 conversions, a lower amount of carbon deposited, and a lower degree of nickel particle sintering.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Fasciola hepatica M17 leucine aminopeptidase (FhLAP) is thought to play a role in catabolizing peptides generated by the concerted activity of gut-associated endopeptidases on host polypeptides, thus releasing amino acids to be used in protein anabolism. In this study, a recombinant functional form of this homo hexameric metallopeptidase produced in Escherichia coli was used in combination with adjuvants of different types in a vaccination trial in Corriedale sheep against experimental challenge with F. hepatica metacercariae. The experimental assay consisted of 6 groups of 10 animals; 5 of the groups (1–5) were subcutaneously inoculated at weeks 0 and 4 with100 g of rFhLAP mixed with Freund’s complete plus incomplete adjuvant (group 1), Alum (group 2), Adyuvac 50 (group 3), DEAE-D (group 4) and Ribi (group 5); the adjuvant control group (group 6) received Freund’s adjuvant. Two weeks after the booster, the sheep were orally challenged with 200 metacercariae. Immunization with rFhLAP induced significant reduction in fluke burdens in all vaccinated groups: 83.8% in the Freund’s group, 86.7% in the Alum group, 74.4% in the Adyuvac 50 group, 49.8% in the Ribi group and 49.5% in the DEAE-D group compared to the adjuvant control group. Morphometric analysis of recovered liver flukes showed no significant size modifications in the different vaccination groups. All vaccine preparations elicited specific IgG, IgG1 and IgG2 responses. This study shows that a liver fluke vaccine based on rFhLAP combined with different adjuvants significantly reduced worm burden in a ruminant species that was high in animals that received the enzyme along with the commercially approved adjuvants Alum and Adyuvac 50.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>BACKGROUND: Release of mercury from fluorescent lamps must be minimized to avoid its hazardous effects on human beings and other living organisms. Because of this, increasing attention is given to the improvement of existing techniques for its recovery as well as the development of new ones. This paper describes the application of heterogeneous photocatalysis for the selective reduction of mercury from fluorescent lamps. The whole process involves mercury chemical extraction using aqueous solutions of sodium hypochlorite. After pH adjustment of the resulting aqueous solution, the photocatalytic reduction of mercury is performed in the presence of titanium dioxide and citric acid as an auxiliary organic agent. RESULTS: Mercury removal from the aqueous solution is higher than 99% and the final residual concentration is 4 ppb. A mixture of different mercury compounds is obtained in solid form deposited on the titanium oxide photocatalyst which can easily be redissolved into a small volume of sodium hypochlorite. Metallic mercury could be obtained from the residual Hg(II) solution by conventional cementation techniques with iron as reducing agent. CONCLUSION: Results show high efficiencies of the photocatalytic technique for recovery and recycling of mercury from fluorescent lamps.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The strong correspondence between the spatial arrangement of archaeological sites and wetland environments is one of the main axes of the Merín Lagoon basin archaeology. Without implying a deterministic simplification from the epistemological point of view, the cultural and environmental history of the region hold evidence suggesting a more complex scenario, where cultural responses to climate change were not so mechanical or direct as previously argued. The relationship between paleoclimate and prehistoric mound builders development between 7.0 and 0.6 ka 14C BP was studied in SE Uruguay. Paleoclimatic data were inferred from the phytolith record of three lagoon sediment cores. Four paleoclimatic periods were identified according to temperature/humidity changes. The first period, dated at 7.0e4.5 ka 14C BP, was characterized by a warm/humid climate. Between 4.5 and 3.5 ka 14C BP, the onset of a cool/dry climate was inferred. A hiatus between 3.5 and 2.6 ka 14C BP was identified. In the third period, 2.5e1.2 ka 14C BP, similar climate conditions to those of the present were inferred. Finally, the period 1.2 and 0.6 ka 14C BP, was characterized by warmer and wetter conditions than those of the present. According to these data, it was determined that mounds were first observed during the transition from warm/humid to cool/dry conditions, but the complexity of the mounds increased after the full establishment of cool/dry conditions. With the inception of warm/humid conditions, an increased number of mounds was observed in the plains located close to the Merín Lagoon littoral. The mounds showed lower density and height than those recorded for the cool/dry period. This behavioral modification in mound construction was explained because of the paleoenvironmental change</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining health and quality of life in old age. Therefore, strategies aimed at improving diet quality are highly relevant. The objective of this work was to evaluate the relative effect of frontof- package warning labels on the food choices of consumers over 60 years of age living in Brazil. A total of 1125 participants over 60 years old were recruited using an Instagram advertisement. They were randomly allocated to four experimental groups, defined considering two 2-level variables: type of warning label (black magnifier vs. black octagon) and information about warning labels (with information vs. no information). Participants in each of the four groups completed a choice-conjoint task involving pairs of product categories (cream cheese, juice, toasts, and yogurt) differing in four variables: commercial “Brand” (familiar vs. unfamiliar), “Nutrition claims” (present vs. absent), “Sensory claims” (present vs. absent) and “Warning label” (present vs. absent). Data were analyzed using mixed logit models. Results revealed a significant effect of type of warning label in some categories, with the magnifier being more effective than the octagon in discouraging unhealthy food choices. However, “Brand” was the most relevant variable and, in some categories, “Nutrition claims” outweighed the effect of “Warning labels”. Exposure to information about the warnings prior to the choice-task reduced the importance of the “Brand” and tended to increase the effect of the “Warnings labels” and “Nutrition claims”. These results highlight the need to implement strategies to promote the use of warnings among older consumers.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Cytokines are key regulators of the immune system that shape innate and adaptive immune responses. An adequate balance of the cytokine environment is critical to achieve protective immunity and to avoid immunopathology. Present knowledge allows a deeper understanding of the cytokine network and their sometimes conflicting roles in the development of immune responses, as well as their relevance in the establishment and maintenance of immunological memory. New insights have been gained into the role of different T cell subsets for protection against infection or tumor growth. The incorporation of cytokines as molecular adjuvants in vaccines has been attempted to strengthen vaccine-induced immune responses, and as a rational approach to modulate cytokine milieu in vivo and tailor host immunity for specific situations. These approaches have been tried in experimental models and veterinary species, and a few of them have entered into clinical trials. However, manipulating the cytokine network to modulate immune responses is not a simple task, because cytokine functions are complex and the final effects on the immune response will depend on timing and length of exposure, cell(s) targeted and other cytokines present in the same microenvironment. Here, we will review our present understanding on the role of cytokines in the development of effector and memory T cell responses. Also the potential use of cytokines as molecular adjuvant for vaccines against infectious diseases and cancer will be revised.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Children´s exposure to inorganic arsenic (iAs) is a concern because of its effects on growth and development, and its carcinogenic properties. Low level As exposure is prevalent but its sources are understudied. We investigated the contribution of diet to iAs exposure and arsenic methylation in 1st-graders (6-8 y, 57.3% boys) from Montevideo. First-morning urine samples were analyzed for iAs metabolites (MMA, DMA and remaining iAs) by high-pressure liquid chromatography with hydride generation and inductively coupled mass spectrometry. Caregivers provided two 24-hr recalls of children’s diets. Principal component analysis identified 6 dietary patterns, explaining 41% of variability in food intake: 1) high intake of red meat, yogurt and sweetened beverages, 2) breads, processed meats and fats, 3) dark green leafy vegetables and white meat, 4) vegetables and eggs, 5) sweets, chips and fried foods, and 6) fruit. Consumption of rice, corn, and grain-based foods was also analyzed. Sp. gravity adjusted urinary arsenic metabolite concentrations (U-As) and metabolite fractions (%MMA, %DMA and %iAs) were modeled as dependent variables with dietary components as predictors, adjusted for sex and BMI- for-age Z score. Models with metabolite fractions were adjusted for U-As. 192 children had urine samples, 188 had diet recall. U-As was fairly low (median, range: 9.93, 2.8-48.1 µg/L). Children scoring high on the fruit pattern had higher U-As (ß±SE: 1.0±04 p<0.05). Children consuming more rice and grains also had higher U-As (0.1±0.03 and 0.02±0.01, respectively, p<0.01). Interestingly, children scoring high on the red meat, yogurt and sweetened beverages, and dark green vegetables and white meats pattern had higher %DMA (0.5±0.3, and 0.9±0.3, respectively, p<0.01) and lower %iAs (-0.4±0.2 and -0.5±0.2, respectively, p<0.1). Children’s food patterns and consumption of specific foods may contribute to inorganic As exposure and affect their ability to methylate arsenic.
<dcterms:abstract>Reformulation of industrialized products has been recognized as one of the most effective strategies to reduce sugar intake and improve public health. Information about product reformulation can negatively affect consumer hedonic perception as a negative relationship between tastiness and healthfulness exists. In this context, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of information about sugar reduction and the use of sweeteners on consumer hedonic, sensory and wellbeing perception, using orange/pomegranate as case study. Samples of orange/pomegranate juice with different sweeteners (no added sugar, sugar, sucralose, stevia and monk fruit extract) were evaluated by 196 consumers under blind or informed conditions, following a between-subjects experimental design. Consumers in the informed group were presented the juice samples with their corresponding bottle displayed on a computer screen, including information about sugar content using the traffic-light system, claims on no added sugar and the presence of natural sweeteners. Consumers had to evaluate their overall liking and answer two CATA questions, related to sensory and wellbeing perception. Information increased consumer sensory and hedonic discrimination of the samples, particularly for the juice sweetened with stevia. Information influenced consumer perception of physical health and emotional aspects of wellbeing. Results from the present work suggest that the influence of information about nutritional characteristics of products and reformulation strategies seems to be modulated by the degree of difference between consumers’ sensory perception of reformulated products and their regular counterpart.</dcterms:abstract>

Its electrical conduction is ruled by native point defects inducing an n-type degenerate behavior. Here, we present a first principles study of the point defects in Bi2Se3, focusing on the relevance of the interstitial sites. A density functional methodology was employed with van der Waals correction and spin–orbit coupling in order to achieve a better description of the defects. The results indicate that interstitial Bi atoms in octahedral sites between two consecutive quintuple layers have a lower formation energy than selenium vacancies and that these interstitials could act as a possible source of free electron carriers. In addition, we show that the utilization of an experimental or strained lattice constant in the calculations may lead to an under- or overestimation of the defect formation energies.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The existence of superconductivity in samples of PrBa2Cu3O7−δ (Pr-123) is still a polemic subject. To further study this problem, we have prepared high-quality polycrystalline Pr-123 samples by following a sol-gel method, associated with heat treatment in inert atmosphere. In this paper we report the structural, thermal and magnetic properties of superconducting sintered-polycrystalline Pr-123 and give a descriptive explanation about its unique dependence on the preparation procedure. The list of evidences of superconductivity in Pr-123 is further expanded with new data on a superconducting thin film. The present results confirming the occurrence of superconductivity in Pr-123 revitalizes the hypothesis that superconductivity originates outside the cuprate-plane</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The different combinations of molecular dynamics simulations with coarse-grained representations have ac quired considerable popularity among the scientific community. Especially in biocomputing, the significant speedup granted by simplified molecular models opened the possibility of increasing the diversity and complexity of macromolecular systems, providing realistic insights on large assemblies for more extended time windows. However, a holistic view of biological ensembles’ structural and dynamic features requires a self-consistent force field, namely, a set of equations and parameters that describe the intra and intermolecular interactions among moieties of diverse chemical nature (i.e., nucleic and amino acids, lipids, solvent, ions, etc.). Nevertheless, examples of such force fields are scarce in the literature at the fully atomistic and coarse-grained levels. More over, the number of force fields capable of handling simultaneously different scales is restricted to a handful. Among those, the SIRAH force field, developed in our group, furnishes a set of topologies and tools that facilitate the setting up and running of molecular dynamics simulations at the coarse-grained and multiscale levels. SIRAH uses the same classical pairwise Hamiltonian function implemented in the most popular molecular dynamics software. In particular, it runs natively in AMBER and Gromacs engines, and porting it to other simulation packages is straightforward. This review describes the underlying philosophy behind the development of SIRAH over the years and across families of biological molecules, discussing current limitations and future implementations.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The social representations of complementary feeding are expected to shape parents’ decisions and to provide justification or legitimization for their practices. The aims of the present work were: i) to explore the social representations of complementary feeding in parents and health professionals, ii) to evaluate if the onset of complementary feeding modify social representations in parents, and iii) to compare the representations of parents and pediatricians. Three groups of participants were considered: 170 parents of children who had not started complementary feeding (1–4 months old), 170 parents of children who had started complementary feeding (7–10 months old) and 212 pediatricians. Parents were recruited in health facilities in Montevideo (Uruguay), whereas pediatricians were recruited at the National Pediatrics Conference. Participants were asked to complete a word association task with “the first meals of a baby”. All the responses provided by participants were grouped into categories using content analysis. The structure of the social representations was assessed considering the frequency of mention and the average rank of appearance of the categories. Results showed that the social representations of complementary feeding for both parents and pediatricians were extremely narrow and mainly focused on specific foods: puree and a small set of vegetables and fruits. None of the categories showed high frequency of mention and low rank of appearance, indicating that the structure of the social representations did not include any element in the first periphery. According to the theory of social representations, results from the present work suggest that the social representations of complementary feeding for Uruguayan parents and pediatricians are deeply rooted and resistant to change.

<dcterms:abstract>The evidence presented in this paper is a first effort to contextualize aspects related to the sourcing, production and uses of red paint during the second millenniumBC in Northern Peru. The site testedwas Gramalote, a fishing settlement of the Peruvian North Coast. The results show that the inhabitants of this settlement had access to a local source of hematite but they also used cinnabar that camefroma distant region located in the Southern Highlands. Based on the abundance of lithic and bone tools, shell containers and ceramic seal stamps, the authors of this article study the process behind the production of this painting. Using physicochemical techniques such as Portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology complemented with structural analysis through X-ray diffraction, applying conventional and synchrotron radiation on selected samples, the authors look at issues related to sourcing, production and uses of the red pigment. In addition, isotopic analysis helped to determine the provenience of cinnabar which is also the earliest evidence of human use of this mineral in the Andean region. Temporal and contextual distributions of these artifacts are analyzed to understand the manipulation and uses of the red paint. Finally, this study also gives a glimpse of the symbolic meaning red pigment could have played in the daily life of a second millennium BC maritime community on the Pacific coast of Peru.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Herein, we report the tuning of the structural and organic magnetoresistance response of poly(9-vinyl carbazole) (PVK) with magnetic nanoparticle addition under exposure to low applied magnetic fields. X-ray diffraction analysis showed evidence of PVK conformational changes by either adding magnetic nanoparticles or by applying an external magnetic field. Molecular dynamics simulations suggested that the loss of aromaticity could lead to slight but detectable modifications in the PVK structure. Confocal Raman spectroscopy under low applied magnetic field evidenced modifications in PVK singlet and triplet populations followed by theoretical simulation to assign the vibrational modes in PVK different multiplicities. Both the addition of magnetic nanoparticles and the presence of an applied magnetic field showed an increase in the PVK triplet-to-singlet ratio. PVK nanocomposites showed negative low field magnetoresistance (MR) reaching maximum values of MR (2 kOe) = −1.1 and −9.0% for T = 280 and 20 K, respectively. The MR dependence with low applied magnetic fields showed a typical behavior in agreement with the electron–hole recombination mechanism. This latter effect could be experimentally associated with the change in the PVK triplet-to-singlet ratio, as observed by Raman analysis. In addition, the PVK magnetoresistance effect could also be ascribed to conformational changes induced by the presence of magnetic nanoparticles and an applied magnetic field, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction analysis.</dcterms:abstract>

The study was mainly focused on the structural, microstructural, electrical and optical characterization of these nanoscale heterostructures by means of X ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman, UV–vis and impedance spectroscopies. Our nanoscale heterostructures yielded a significant enhancement in the electric conductivity interpreted in terms of favorable interactions between the NS-GQD and the NaNT acting as proper connectors. Finally, our QDSSC prototype exhibits promising values for diffusion coefficient and recombination times as evidenced by means of impedance modulated photocurrent and photovoltage spectroscopies. Also, we consider that these materials could be further explored for electron transport layers applications in order to exploit the advantages regarding electron transport properties.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The study of the adaptation mechanisms that allow microorganisms to live and proliferate in an extreme habitat is a growing research field. Directly exposed to the external environment, lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from Gram-negative bacteria are of great appeal as they can present particular structural features that may aid the understanding of the adaptation processes. Moreover, through being involved in modulating the mammalian immune system response in a structure-dependent fashion, the elucidation of the LPS structure can also be seen as a fundamental step from a biomedical point of view. In this paper, the lipid A structure of the LPS from Spiribacter salinus M19-40T, a halophilic gamma-proteobacteria, was characterized through chemical analyses and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry. This revealed a mixture of mono- and bisphosphorylated penta- to tri-acylated species with the uncommon 2 + 3 symmetry and bearing an unusual 3-oxotetradecaonic acid.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The larvae of the cestodes belonging to the genus Echinococcus dwell primarily in mammalian liver. They are protected by the laminated layer (LL), an acellular mucin-based structure. The glycans decorating these mucins constitute the overwhelming majority of molecules exposed by these larvae to their hosts. However, their decoding by host innate immunity has not been studied. Out of 36 mammalian innate receptors with carbohydrate-binding domains, expressed as Fc fusions, only the mouse Kupffer cell receptor (KCR; CLEC4F) bound significantly to the Echinococcus granulosus LL mucins. The receptor also bound the Echinococcus multilocularis LL. Out of several synthetic glycans representing Echinococcus LL structures, the KCR bound strongly in particular to those ending in Galα1-4Galβ1-3 or Galα1-4Galβ1-4GlcNAc, both characteristic LL carbohydrate motifs. LL carbohydrates may be optimized to interact with the KCR, expressed only in liver macrophages, cells known to contribute to the tolerogenic antigen presentation that is characteristic of this organ.

</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>Taking into account the low stability of the Sm(III)–amino acids compounds and searching for thermodynamically stable compounds which contain biologically relevant ligands in the coordination sphere, mixed-ligand compounds have been studied by potentiometric measurements. The strategy was to use a stable core with Sm(III) and polycarboxylates (edta, nta, ida, etc.) and to substitute the labile positions (occupied by water molecules) by amino acids. Experiments were performed in aqueous solution at 37.0 °C and 0.15 M NaClO4, resembling physiological medium. In all cases, mixed-ligand species were detected in solution. If cores like nta or ida were used, it was possible to get amino acid containing complexes stable enough to be used at physiological pH, avoiding precipitation of Sm(OH)3. Single-crystal X-ray structure of K2.5(H3O)0.5[Sm(nta)2(H2O)]·5H2O is also reported. A nine coordinate Sm atom is found, surrounded by two N atoms and six O atoms from two nta ligands and one O from a water molecule. Geometry around Sm can be described as a tricapped trigonal prism.

</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:subject>PARASITOLOGIA</dcterms:subject>
    <dcterms:subject>BIBLIOGRAFIA NACIONAL QUIMICA</dcterms:subject>
    <dcterms:abstract>We recently standardised Mesocestoides vogae
(syn. corti) tetrathyridia cultures in the presence of sodium
taurocholate. Parasite clustering and segmentation
were observed as taurocholate-dependent effects in biphasic
and monophasic media, respectively, and both
were inhibited by a specific minimum inhibitory concentration
(m.i.c.) of the cestocidal drugs albendazol and
praziquantel. In the present study, we analysed the relationship
between clustering inhibition and drug toxicity
using praziquantel and a mouse experimental
infection. In an ‘‘in vitro–in vivo’’ trial, a significant
(ANOVA, P<0.05) reduction was observed in the infectivity
of tetrathyridia previously cultured with praziquantel
m.i.c. (0.06 lg/ml) for 10 days. In an ‘‘in vivo–in
vitro’’ trial, the clustering of tetrathyridia recovered
from mice treated with praziquantel was found to be
markedly reduced: 22%, compared with 83% clustercontaining
wells of parasites from control mice. These
results show that the outcome of infection and the
suppression of taurocholate-induced clustering provide
consistent indications of praziquantel toxicity against
M. vogae, an observation confirmed by histological
studies. The easily recorded clustering inhibition of
M. vogae tetrathyridia in biphasic medium is a potentially
useful system for the assessment of drug toxicity
against cestode larvae.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The use of nanostructured materials for enzyme immobilization is an active field of research due to its large surface area and the new emergent properties derived from its size. The present work is focused on the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles for the adsorption of cysteine-proteolytic enzymes extracted from Bromelia antiacantha Bertol (Bromeliaceae) fruit. The results show that enzyme adsorption is highly dependent on the temperature and pH. The biocatalyst activity increased up to 40 %, once immobilized onto the magnetic nanoparticles. In addition, they can be recovered using a magnet allowing them to be reused up to 5 cycles with a marginal loss (5 %) of the initial activity.</dcterms:abstract>
