The accuracy of the method was in the range of 95%–97%; the intra-assay precision was within the range of 1.8%–6.2% expressed as the relative standard deviation, and the interassay precision was within 6.9%–15%. The limits of detection and quantification were 1.8 and 5.4 μg L− 1 , respectively. The validated method resulted very helpful to assess the health risk of As exposure through drinking water and was successfully applied in urine samples collected from wood impregnation plant workers. The methodology can be postulated as a viable alternative to expensive techniques, such as liquid chromatography (HPLC) in combination with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), for biomonitoring studies.</dcterms:tableOfContents>

These cis-diols are valuable chiral building blocks, as they are enantiomerically pure, possessing good accessibility and high chemical versatility. Our work covers enzymatic and chemical aspects of the biotransforma tion, as well as synthetic applications of the resulting cis-diols. We optimized the biotransformation procedure, described a computational model of TDO, designed new mutants, identified new metabolites, and disclosed new reactions of the Rieske dioxygenases. Also, the reactivity of the cis-diol core was studied, with an emphasis in addition reactions, such as cycloadditions, osmylations, and electrophilic addi tions. Preparation of building blocks and bioactive natural products is described from the synthetic point of view, mostly concerning cyclitols, carbasugars, acetogenin and carbohy drates.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>We have studied the reduction reactions of two cytosolic human peroxiredoxins (Prx) in their disulfide form by three thioredoxins (Trx; two human and one bacterial), with the aim of better understanding the rate and mechanism of those reactions, and their relevance in the context of the catalytic cycle of Prx. We have developed a new methodology based on stoppedflow and intrinsic fluorescence to study the bimolecular reactions, and found rate constants in the range of 105–106 M 1 s 1 in all cases, showing that there is no marked kinetic preference for the expected Trx partner. By combining experimental findings and molecular dynamics studies, we found that the reactivity of the nucleophilic cysteine (CN) in the Trx is greatly affected by the formation of the Prx–Trx complex. The protein–protein interaction forces the CN thiolate into an unfavorable hydrophobic microenvironment that reduces its hydration and results in a remarkable acceleration of the thiol-disulfide exchange reactions by more than three orders of magnitude and also produces a measurable shift in the pKa of the CN. This mechanism of activation of the thiol disulfide exchange may help understand the reduction of Prx by alternative reductants involved in redox signaling.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Research on behavioral and social science has demonstrated that transitions throughout a person’s life course, as the life event of becoming a parent, represent an opportunity for dietary changes. However, research in this area has been mostly restricted to developed European and North American countries and has shown ambiguous results. The present work aimed to gain an in-depth understanding on the changes in eating habits caused by the transition to parenthood and to explore factors influencing those changes in Uruguay, a Latin American country. Forty-two in-depth interviews with Uruguayan parents from diverse social-economic backgrounds were conducted. The narrations by the interviewees evidenced mostly positive changes during three stages in the transition: pregnancy, the first months with the baby, and the beginning of complementary feeding. Most informants perceived changes mainly in terms of increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, and pulses; increased consumption of homemade meals; and decreased consumption of ultra-processed foods, fast foods, and fried foods. Reasons for these changes included adaptation of meals to the child’s needs and schedule, feeling of responsibility for the child’s health, and willingness to be a good role model. Factors influencing changes in eating habits were identified in some levels of the socioecological model and included socioeconomic status; price of fruits, vegetables, and fish; low accessibility of good quality fish; perceived time pressure; father’s low interest on healthy eating; social support; and access to nutrition information. Findings suggest that parenthood represents a window of opportunity for favorable changes in eating habits. However, barriers constraining those changes should be addressed by stakeholders.</dcterms:abstract>

Nutritional warning labels aim at highlighting products with excessive content of nutrients associated with noncommunicable diseases. The aim of the present narrative review is to summarize the evidence about the effects of nutritional warning labels on consumer perception and behavior, both before and after policy implementation. The existing evidence suggests that this FOP nutrition labeling increases consumer ability to interpret nutritional information and discourages the choice of unhealthy products. Further research is needed to better understand the effect of warning label policies on food choices and long-term population health as well as product reformulation.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>In rice paddies, soil and plant-derived organic matter are degraded anaerobically to methane (CH4), a powerful greenhouse gas. The highest rate of methane emission occurs during the reproductive stage of the plant when mostly dicarboxylic acids are exudated by the roots. The emission of methane at this stage depends largely on the cooperative interaction between dicarboxylic acid-fermenting bacteria and methanogenic archaea in the rhizosphere. The fermentation of tartrate, one of the major acids exudated, has been scarcely explored in rice paddy soils. In this work, we characterized an anaerobic consortium from rice paddy soil composed of four bacterial strains, whose principal member (LT8) can ferment tartrate, producing H2 and acetate. Tartrate fermentation was accelerated by co-inoculation with a hydrogenotrophic methanogen. The assembled genome of LT8 possesses a Na+-dependent oxaloacetate decarboxylase and shows that this bacterium likely invests part of the H2 produced to reduce NAD(P)+ to assimilate C from tartrate. The phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene, the genome-based classification as well as the average amino acid identity (AAI) indicated that LT8 belongs to a new genus within the Sporomusaceae family. LT8 shares a few common features with its closest relatives, for which tartrate degradation has not been described. LT8 is limited to a few environments but is more common in rice paddy soils, where it might contribute to methane emissions from root exudates.</dcterms:abstract>

Participants in an online survey read a text about vertical farming. They used highlighter functions to mark parts of the text they “liked” and “disliked”. Four countries were included in the research—United Kingdom, United States, Singapore, and China (637–683 adults per country). The percentage of participants who highlighted words as “like” and “dislike” was calculated for each of the sentences and countries. Analysis of the highlighting responses did not point to response style or systematic differences in responding. This supported the use of text highlighting in cross-cultural research. <dcterms:abstract>Background: Nutritional warnings are one of several front-of-package labelling schemes implemented worldwide. Their adoption has often been complex and contested, particularly due to trade concerns and strong industry opposition. In this context, citizen support is considered critical. Understanding how people express views, motivations, and trust in institutions through everyday social talk can inform strategies to bridge opinion groups. Objective: To explore narratives about nutritional warnings on Twitter throughout the Uruguayan policy process. Methods: Tweets from Uruguay between May 2018 and April 2021 were retrieved using Synthesio®. Content analysis followed a deductive–inductive approach. First, references to the four elements of the Narrative Policy Framework (Setting, Characters, Plot, Moral) were identified. Then, inductive coding was used to generate categories within each element. Results: A total of 1013 tweets were retrieved, of which 752 related to the Uruguayan warning label policy. Most tweets were posted by regular citizens without explicit links to key stakeholders. Tweets commonly included narrative elements, particularly a character and a moral or policy solution. As the policy process advanced, narrative elements shifted: regulatory changes prompted higher engagement, stronger polarization, and increasingly divergent arguments. Conclusions: Findings highlight the value of examining public discourse on social media during the policy process. Understanding how nutritional warning labels are framed by citizens can help researchers and policymakers develop advocacy and communication strategies to shape opinion and support policy implementation in other countries.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The classification of processed foods plays a pivotal role in shaping public health policies and research. While systems such as NOVA categorize foods based on processing level, they have been criticized for definitional ambiguity and for conflating technological, nutritional, and commercial dimensions. This study aimed to contribute to the ongoing debate by applying a data-driven, unsupervised clustering approach to a comprehensive database of 7284 packaged food and beverage products available in the Uruguayan market. Products were grouped based on nutritional composition and food additive disclosure using non-hierarchical clustering based on Gower distances. Nineteen distinct clusters were identified, each characterized by unique nutrient and additive profiles. Principal Component Analysis and heatmap visualizations revealed substantial heterogeneity in formulation both within and across traditional product categories and subcategories. Clusters differed markedly in their use of specific additives, such as acidity regulators, antioxidants, and humectants, demonstrating that additive combinations reflect distinct technological strategies. Notably, additive disclosure did not consistently align with nutrient profiles, reinforcing the multidimensional nature of food formulation. These results call for more granular classification approaches that move beyond prototypical products within categories and explicitly integrate both nutrient profiles and additive disclosure. Developing multidimensional indexes of food formulation could enhance risk assessment and clarify how specific formulation strategies relate to health outcomes, ultimately enabling more precise and effective public health nutrition policies.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The β-lactoglobulin protein from cow’s milk is a common allergen present in human milk that leads to serious allergic reactions in susceptible infants. This creates a serious safety issue in Human Milk Banks, and the best practice to assure the safety of susceptible newborns would be to classify the donated human milk according to its content of β-lactoglobulin. To provide a simple and fast assay to detect this molecule in human milk we developed a nanobody-based sandwich ELISA. The capture and detection nanobodies were isolated by phage display from a llama immunized with the antigen using a sequential selection strategy for antibody pair iden tification. This allowed to attain a highly sensitive test with a limit of quantitation of 40 pg/mL and extended lineal range of up to 3000 pg/mL, showing an excellent performance with human milk. For these characteristics, the ELISA developed might be useful for the classification of donated human milk according to their β-lacto globulin content, improving the quality of milk destined to susceptible newborns.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Introduction: The identification of chemical compounds that interfere with SARS CoV-2 replication continues to be a priority in several academic and pharmaceutical laboratories. Computational tools and approaches have the power to integrate, process and analyze multiple data in a short time. However, these initiatives may yield unrealistic results if the applied models are not inferred from reliable data and the resulting predictions are not confirmed by experimental evidence. Methods: We undertook a drug discovery campaign against the essential major protease (MPro) from SARS-CoV-2, which relied on an in silico search strategy –performed in a large and diverse chemolibrary– complemented by experimental validation. The computational method comprises a recently reported ligand-based approach developed upon refinement/learning cycles, and structure-based approximations. Search models were applied to both retrospective (in silico) and prospective (experimentally confirmed) screening. Results: The first generation of ligand-based models were fed by data, which to a great extent, had not been published in peer-reviewed articles. The first screening campaign performed with 188 compounds (46 in silico hits and 100 analogues, and 40 unrelated compounds: flavonols and pyrazoles) yielded three hits against MPro (IC50 ≤ 25 μM): two analogues of in silico hits (one glycoside and one benzo-thiazol) and one flavonol. A second generation of ligand-based models was developed based on this negative information and newly published peer-reviewed data for MPro inhibitors. This led to 43 new hit candidates belonging to different chemical families. From 45 compounds (28 in silico hits and 17 related analogues) tested in the second screening campaign, eight inhibited MPro with IC50 = 0.12–20 μM and five of them also impaired the proliferation of SARS-CoV-2 in Vero cells (EC50 7–45 μM). Discussion: Our study provides an example of a virtuous loop between computational and experimental approaches applied to target-focused drug discovery against a major and global pathogen, reaffirming the well-known “garbage in, garbage out” machine learning principle.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Penicillin is one of the most widely used antibiotics to treat bacterial infections in clinical practice. The antibiotic undergoes degradation under physiological conditions to produce reactive compounds that in vivo bind self proteins. These conjugates might elicit an immune response and trigger allergic reactions challenging to di agnose due to the complex immunogenicity. Penicillin allergy delabeling initiatives are now part of antibiotic stewardship programs and include the use of invasive and risky in vivo tests. Instead, the in vitro quantification of specific IgE is highly useful to confirm immediate allergy to penicillins. However, discrepant results associated with the low sensitivity and accuracy of penicillin allergy in vitro tests have limited their routine diagnostic use for delabeling purposes. We aimed to develop a homologous chemiluminescence-based immunochemical method for the reliable determination of specific IgE to penicillin G, using unprecedented synthetic human-like standards. The synthetic standard targets the major antigenic determinant of penicillin G and the paratope of Omalizumab, acting as human-like specific IgE. It is a potent calibrator, highly stable, easy, and inexpensive to produce, overcoming the limitations of the pooled human serum preparations. The developed method achieved a good agreement and strong positive relationship, reaching a detection limit below 0.1 IU mL− 1 and excellent reproducibility (RSD <9%). The clinical sensitivity of the assay significantly increased (66%), doubling the accuracy of the reference method with an overall specificity of 100%. The new diagnostic strategy compares favorably with results obtained by the standard procedure, paving the way towards the standardization of penicillin allergy testing, and enhancing the detection sensitivity of specific IgE in serum to tackle reliably β-lactam allergy delabeling.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Glutathione transferase enzymes (GSTs) are believed to be a major detoxification system in helminth parasites and have been associated with immunomodulation of the host response. Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) is a cestode parasite known to express at least five different GSTs, but no Omega-class enzymes have been reported in this parasite or in any other cestode. Herein we report the identification of a new member of the GST su perfamily in E. granulosus s.l., which is phylogenetically related to the Omega-class: EgrGSTO. Through mass spectrometry, we showed that the 237 amino acids protein EgrGSTO is expressed by the parasite. Moreover, we identified homologues of EgrGSTO in other eight members of the Taeniidae family, including E. canadensis, E. multilocularis, E. oligarthrus, Hydatigera taeniaeformis, Taenia asiatica, T. multiceps, T. saginata and T. solium. A manual sequence inspection and rational modification yielded eight Taeniidae’s GSTO sequences, each one encoding for a 237 aa polypeptide showing 80.2% overall identity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of genes encoding for Omega-class GSTs in worms belonging to the Taeniidae family -that at least in E. granulosus s.l. is expressed as a protein- suggesting the gene encodes for a functional protein.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Global warming has a strong impact on the polar regions, in particular, the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands. Methane (CH4) is a major factor in climate change and mitigation of CH4 emissions can be accomplished through microbial oxidation by methanotrophic bacteria. Understanding this biological process is crucial given the shortage of research carried out in this geographical area. The aim of this study was to characterise psychrophilic enrichment cultures of aerobic methanotrophs obtained from lake sediments of the Fildes Peninsula (King George Island, South Shetland Islands) and revealing the distribution of the genus Methylobacter in different lake sediments of the peninsula. Four stable methanotrophic enrichment cultures were obtained and analysed by metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs). The phylogeny of methanotroph MAGs recovered from these enrichment cultures based on the 16S rRNA gene showed that K-2018 MAG008 and D1-2020 MAG004Ts clustered within the Methylobacter clade 2, with high similarity to Methylobacter tundripaludum SV96T (97.88 and 98.56% respectively). However, the average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values with M. tundripaludum were < 95% (84.8 and 85.0%, respectively) and < 70% (30.2 and 30.3%, respectively), suggesting that they represent a putative novel species for which the name ‘Ca. Methylobacter titanis’ is proposed. This is the first species of clade 2 of the genus Methylobacter obtained from Antarctica. The bacterial diversity assessed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing of 21 samples of different lakes (water column and sediments) revealed 54 ASVs associated with methanotrophs and the genus Methylobacter as the most abundant. These results suggest that aerobic methanotrophs belonging to the Methylobacter clade 2 would be the main responsible for CH4 oxidation in these sediments.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>Environmental exposure to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) can have negative effects on the health of ecosystems and humans. While numerous studies have monitored APIs in rivers, these employ different analytical methods, measure different APIs, and have ignored many of the countries of the world. This makes it difficult to quantify the scale of the problem from a global perspective. Furthermore, comparison of the existing data, generated for different studies/regions/continents, is challenging due to the vast differences between the analytical methodologies employed. Here, we present a global-scale study of API pollution in 258 of the world’s rivers, representing the environmental influence of 471.4 million people across 137 geographic regions. Samples were obtained from 1,052 locations in 104 countries (representing all continents and 36 countries not previously studied for API contamination) and analyzed for 61 APIs. Highest cumulative API concentrations were observed in sub-Saharan Africa, south Asia, and South America. The most contaminated sites were in low- to middle-income countries and were associated with areas with poor wastewater and waste management infrastructure and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The most frequently detected APIs were carbamazepine, metformin, and caffeine (a compound also arising from lifestyle use), which were detected at over half of the sites monitored. Concentrations of at least one API at 25.7%of the sampling sites were greater than concentrations considered safe for aquatic organisms, or which are of concern in terms of selection for antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, pharmaceutical pollution poses a global threat to environmental and human health, as well as to delivery of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.</dcterms:abstract>

Thus, continuing with our efforts to explore the chemical space around bioactive furoxan moiety, multicomponent reactions
were employed for the rapid generation of molecular diversity and complexity. We herein report the use of Ugi and Groebke–Blackburn–Bienaymé multicomponent reactions under efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly conditions to synthesize a small collection of nitric-oxide-releasing molecules. The in vitro antiproliferative activity of the synthesized compounds was measured against two different human cancer cell lines, LNCaP (prostate) and T24 (bladder). Almost all compounds displayed antiproliferative activity against both cancer cell lines, providing lead compounds with nanomolar GI50 values against the cancer bladder cell line with selectivity indices higher than 10.
</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>
Background: Helminthiasis and resistance to commercial anthelmintic compounds are major causes of economic
losses for livestock producers, resulting in an urgent need for new drugs and reliable in vitro screening tests capable
of detecting potentially active products. Considering this, a series of novel benzimidazole derivatives (5-methylbenzimidazole 1,2-disubstituted, 5-carboxybenzimidazole, 5-methylbenzimidazole 2-one) was screened on exsheathed L3 (xL3) and on the adult stage of Haemonchus contortus (Kirby anthelmintic-susceptible McMaster isolate).
Methods: This work presents the set-up of an automated motility assay on the xL3 stage of H. contortus using an
infrared tracking device (WMicrotracker One) together with a larval development test (xL3 to L4) and a motility assay
on the adult stage of H. contortus. A comparative study of the sensitivity of these in vitro assays using commercial
anthelmintics with different mechanisms of action was carried out, also evaluating anthelmintic activity of a series of
novel benzimidazole derivatives.
Results: The automated xL3 assay had the great advantage of being able to analyze many compounds simultaneously,
but it showed the limitation of having lower sensitivity, requiring higher concentrations of the commercial
anthelmintics tested compared to those needed for the adult motility or development assays. Although none of the
novel 1,2,5-tri-substituted benzimidazole derivatives could significantly decrease the motility of xL3s, one of them (1e)
significantly affected the development of xL3s to L4, and five new compounds (1b, 1d, 1e, 2a and 2c) reduced the
motility of H. contortus adult stage.
Conclusions: The analysis of the results strongly suggests that the in vitro xL3 to L4 development test, particularly
for the L4 stage, could be closer to the pharmacological sensitivity of the adult stage of H. contortus (target of interest)
for commercial anthelmintic selected, with different mechanisms of action, and for the series of benzimidazole
derivatives assayed. Therefore, an automated motility assay on L4 using the infrared tracking device is being set up.
Further studies will be conducted to evaluate the in vivo anthelmintic activity of the most active novel benzimidazole
derivatives.
</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>
The aim of this work was to evaluate the physicochemical and biological properties of docetaxel (DCX) loaded chitosan nanocapsules (CS Nc) functionalized with the monoclonal antibody Chi-Tn (CS-PEG-ChiTn mAb Nc) as a potential improvement treatment for cancer therapy. The Tn antigen is highly specific for carcinomas, and this is the first time that such structure is targeted for drug delivery. The nanocapsules (Ncs), formed as a polymeric shell around an oily core, allowed a 99.9% encapsulation efficiency of DCX with a monodispersity particle size in the range of 200 nm and a high positive surface charge that provide substantial stability to the nanosystems. Release profile of DCX from Ncs showed a sustained and pH dependent behavior with a faster release at acidic pH, which could be favorable in the intracellular drug delivery.We have designed PEGylated CS Nc modified with amonoclonal antibody which recognize Tn antigen, one of themost specific tumor associated antigen. A biotin-avidin approach achieved the successful attachment of the antibody to the nanocapsules. Uptake studies and viability assay conducted in A549 human lung cancer cell line in vitro demonstrate that ChiTn mAb enhance nanoparticles internalization and cell viability reduction. Consequently, these ChiTn functionalized nanocapsules are promising carriers for the active targeting of DCX to Tn expressing carcinomas.
</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>The main goal of this mini-review is to provide an updated state-of-the-art of the hybrid organic-inorganic materials focusing mainly on interface phenomena involving ionic and electronic transport properties. First, we review the most relevant preparation techniques and the structural features of hybrid organic-inorganic materials prepared by solution-phase reaction of inorganic/organic precursor into organic/inorganic hosts and vapor-phase infiltration of the inorganic precursor into organic hosts and molecular layer deposition of organic precursor onto the inorganic surface. Particular emphasis is given to the advances in joint experimental and theoretical studies discussing diverse types of computational simulations for hybrid-organic materials and interfaces. We make a specific revision on the separately ionic, and electronic transport properties of these hybrid organic inorganic materials focusing mostly on interface phenomena. Finally, we deepen into mixed ionic-electronic transport properties and provide our concluding remarks and give some perspectives about this growing field of research.</dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract>
no ocurriría.
</dcterms:abstract>
