<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Three years pesticide residues monitoring data in pollen, wax, bees and honey from sentinel apiaries in different agroecosystems in Uruguay were used for meta analysis. Support vector machines (SVM) algorithm was used previously to classify environments and is the basis of the present work. An useful indicator was developed to classify the contamination status of both beehives and associated environment. The index is a quotient between hive simple demographic parameters and the sum of toxic units for each pesticide found in it. The Agroecology Environment Quality quotient (AEQ) can be scaled in three different levels. When it is below 1, the hive will hardly develop in such environment. AEQ values between 1 and 2 indicate that the hive could have some restrictions to develop in such environment due to pesticide contamination but probably it will be productive. In the cases where the index is above 2, the hive will develop well in the environment where it is located. AEQ permits simultaneously to obtain different information. These are: the surveillance of good agricultural practices accomplishment in agroecosystems, the selection of the best environment to perform apicultural activities as well as to monitor the productivity and development of the beehives.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Galectins are a family of carbohydrate-recognizing proteins that by interacting with specific glycoepitopes can mediate important biological processes, including immune cell homeostasis and activation of tolerogenic circuits. Among the different members of this family, Galectin 1 and 3 have shown pro-tumorigenic effects, being overexpressed in numerous neoplasic diseases, proving to be relevant in tumor immune escape, tumor progression and resistance to drug-induced apoptosis. Thus, generation of specific glycosides that could inhibit their pro-tumorigenic ability by blocking their carbohydrate recognition domain is one of the current major challenges in the field. Considering that galectin-ligand binding strength is closely related to the ligand structure, analysis of this relationship provides valuable information for rational design of high-affinity ligands that could work as effective galectin inhibitors. Taking profit of the ability of glycosidases to catalyze transglycosylation reactions we achieved the enzymatic synthesis of β-d-Galp-(1 → 6)-β-d-Galp-(1 → 4)-d-Glcp (2), a mixture of β-d-Galp-(1 → 6)-β-d-Glcp-(1 → 4)-d-Glcp (5) and β-d-Galp-(1 → 3)-β-d-Glcp-(1 → 4)-d-Glcp (6), and finally benzyl β-d-galactopyranoside (9), with reaction yields between 16 and 27%. All the galactosides were purified, and characterized using 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Docking results performed between the synthesized compounds and human Galectin 1 (hGal-1) and human Galectin 3 (hGal-3) showed that the replacement of a glucose moiety linked to the terminal galactose with a galactose moiety, decreases the affinity for these galectins. Moreover, regarding the interglycosidic bond the most favorable β-Gal linkage seems to be β(1 → 4) followed by β(1 → 3) and β(1 → 6) for hGal-1, and β(1 → 4) followed by β(1 → 6) and β(1 → 3) for hGal-3. These results were in accordance with the IC50 values obtained with in vitro solid phase inhibition assays. Therefore, docking results obtained in this work proved to be a very good approximation for predicting binding affinity of novel galactosides.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[It is well known that high ethanol levels in wines adversely affect the perception of new wine consumers. Moreover, numerous issues, such as civil restrictions, health risk and trade barriers, are associated with high ethanol concentrations. Several strategies have been proposed to produce wines with lower alcoholic content, one simple and inexpensive approach being the use of new wine native yeasts with less efficiency in sugar to ethanol conversion. Nevertheless, it is also necessary that these yeasts do not impair the quality of wine. In this work, we tested the effect of sequential culture between Hanseniaspora uvarum BHu9 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae BSc114 on ethanol production. Then, the wines produced were analyzed by GC-MS and tested by a sensorial panel. Co-culture had a positive impact on ethanol reduction and sensory profile when compared to the S. cerevisiae monoculture. Wines with lower alcohol content were related to fruity aroma; moreover, color intensity was associated. The wines obtained with S. cerevisiae BSc114 in pure conditions were described by parameters linked with high ethanol levels, such as hotness and astringency. Moreover, floral profile was related to this treatment. Based on these findings, this work provides a contribution to answer the current consumers’ preferences and addresses the main challenges faced by the enological industry]]></dcterms:abstract>

Divanillin molecules crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pba2 (No. 32), with two molecules per unit cell (Z′ = 1 \over 2). Each divanillin molecule, with twofold symmetry, is linked through strong alcohol–aldehyde hydrogen bonds to four equivalent molecules, defining a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding network, with rings made up of six divanillin units (a diamond-like arrangement). Each molecule is also connected through π–π interactions to a translation-equivalent molecule along c. Four consecutive molecules stacked along [001] belong to four different three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding networks defining a quadruple array of interpenetrating networks. For this purpose, we studied the influence of the capping agents pyridine and aniline in the nanoparticles hydrothermal syntheses. These capping agents are suitable for use in hybrid organic- inorganic solar cells. Different ratios of these agents with respect to the metal precursor were tested. Hexagonal and disc-type nanoparticles were obtained. Lower concentrations of capping agent increased the proportion of hexagons, while diminishing their size. The obtained products are adequate in size, dispersion of size, and stabile in suspension in chloroform to use them in hybrid solar cells. Moreover, the use ofpyridine allowed for more stable suspensions, and therefore better results for this application.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[This paper deals with the role of dispersed lanthana as an active phase in several catalytic reactions: CO hydrogenation, CO oxidation, and oxidative dimerization of methane. Characterization of the prepared catalysts indicates that lanthana can be effectively dispersed on silica and on ceria. While in the case of silica-supported catalysts lanthana appears at the surface, leading to an almost full coverage for loadings higher than 40%, in the case of ceria-based systems, lanthana forms a solid solution with the support. In all the reactions studied, the presence of lanthana can be related to significant changes in the catalytic properties of the bare supports. Thus, the selectivity towards the total oxidation products observed on pure ceria is decreased, and the low activity shown by silica is enhanced. For the CO + H{sub 2} reaction, the addition of lanthana also generates upgraded products. (orig.).]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Here, we report a synergistic in situ synthesis of lithium-ion poly (ethylene citrate) with embedded titania nanoparticles in which the esterification process itself triggered the hydrolysis of the titanium alkoxide precursor to form a promising fluorine-free lithium-ion solid polymer electrolyte. Structural characterization by means of X-ray diffraction, small angle X-ray scattering and also confocal Raman spectroscopy revealed the formation of the polyester with embedded titania nanoparticles in agreement with our Raman spectra simulation by means of DFT methodologies. Our theoretical modeling of the polyester also envisaged the interaction of lithium-ion via a tridentate coordination with oxygen atoms of carboxylate (–COO-) and ester (–COO–) groups. There is a slight increase in the degree of polymerization and thermal stability for our lithium-ion polyester with increasing titania nanoparticles concentration. In consequence, a two-order magnitude increase in the ionic conductivity was observed, yielding 1.74× 10−4 S cm−1 for a 20% weight fraction of titania nanoparticles. Thus, involving a novel approach based in the synergistic in situ preparation of lithium-ion poly (ethylene citrate) with titania nanoparticles, this procedure contributes to solve the many safety and environmental issues of the constitutive materials of lithium-ion solid polymer electrolytes.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In the current context of increasing worldwide concern about the prevalence of health problems related to high sodium intake, reducing the sodium content of food products has been identified as a cost-effective strategy to improve public health. The present work was aimed to assess the effect of salt reduction on consumers' perception, using white rice as case study. Particular emphasis was put on exploring individual differences in consumers' reaction towards salt reduction. A preliminary study, using a trained panel, was conducted to determine the difference threshold for salt in rice. The consumer study involved 156 consumers and encompassed three parts. First, consumers were presented with a 150 g portion of cooked rice prepared without added salt and were asked to indicate how much salt they would add to it (without tasting). Then, they were presented with six white rice samples differing in their salt content and were asked to indicate their overall liking using a 9-point hedonic scale, to asses adequacy of saltiness intensity using a 5-point just-about-right scale, and to indicate whether they would add salt to the rice. Finally, consumers completed a short survey about their salt consumption habits, interest in health and socio-demographic profile. As expected, results revealed large heterogeneity in consumers' hedonic reaction towards salt reduction: two consumer segments with different hedonic reaction were identified. Both consumer segments also differed in their hedonic sensitivity and tolerance to salt reduction in rice. Significant differences between consumer segments were found in their salt consumption habits, in particular related to salt addition to food, and also in their interest in reducing salt intake. These results suggest that eating habits might play a major role in shaping our preferences, highlighting the potential of gradual salt reduction as a strategy for reducing sodium intake.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In herbivorous insects, the preference–performance hypothesis predicts that females will choose to oviposit on plants that maximize offspring development. Although there is evidence to support this hypothesis, several studies have shown that it does not always apply. Among the factors that may modulate the preference–performance relationship, diet breadth is a significant one, although no correlation has been found for monophagous insects. More case studies are needed, as more restricted diets are expected to require better discrimination ability. In this study, we explored the preference–performance linkage in a monophagous sawfly, Tequus schrottkyi (Konow) (Hymenoptera: Pergidae), which feeds as larva on the wild potato Solanum commersonii Dunal (Solanaceae). We used the cultivated potato, Solanum tuberosum L., as an alternative host plant for our experiments. Performance was evaluated from newly emerged larvae until adult emergence, raising individual larvae on potted plants or excised leaves. Female oviposition preference was studied in two‐choice bioassays, in which individual females were offered whole plants of S. commersonii and S. tuberosum. The nutritional quality of the plants was assessed by measuring protein, non‐structural carbohydrate, and water contents. The offspring performed better on their host plant, S. commersonii, resulting in more larvae completing their development to the adult stage. Moreover, the larvae developed faster and their cocoon weighed more when they were raised on their host plant. The females oviposited almost exclusively on S. commersonii, regardless of their previous food plant. The protein and non‐structural carbohydrate contents did not differ between the plants, whereas water content was higher in the non‐preferred S. tuberosum. The differences in water content and in secondary metabolites, which have been analyzed in a previous study, may play a role in female preference and offspring performance. The results are discussed within the framework of the preference–performance hypothesis and the chemical ecology of insect–plant interactions.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A novel method for the determination of trace cadmium in honey is presented. It consists of a preconcentration step based on dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and measurement by flame AAS. Samples are dissolved in water. A mixture of carbon tetrachloride (extraction solvent) and acetonitrile (dispersion solvent) containing ammoniun pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC) as complexing agent is injected rapidly into the dissolved sample by means of a syringe pump. After centrifugation, an aliquot of the organic phase is injected in the nebuliser of an atomic absorption spectrometer by means of a lab-made microsampling device. Response (integrated absorbance) was linear with concentrations up to 12 μg L−1. Precision (sr(%)) at the 5 μg L−1 level was < 3.1%. Detection and quantification limits were 1.6 and 5.5 μg per 100 g of honey respectively. Six commercial samples were spiked at the 10 μg per 100 g level and analysed by the proposed method and by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. The results did not differ at the 5% significance level, with recoveries for the DLLME/FAAS method ranging from 82 to 125%. The proposed method requires simple sample preparation and does not use expensive equipment, thus it could be used as screening method for the content of cadmium in honey.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Catalysts obtained by calcination at 700 °C are activated by the bio-syngas and the one that contains 30 wt% of Fe attains steady CO conversion levels of 75% and a total hydrocarbon yield of 34%–36%. Potassium promotion (6 wt%) allows to increase CO conversion (∼89%) and hydrocarbons yield (∼44%). <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Two Streptomyces spp. strains responsible for potato common scab infections in Uruguay which do not produce diketopiperazines were identified through whole-genome sequencing, and the virulence factor produced by one of them was isolated and characterized. Phylogenetic analysis showed that both pathogenic strains can be identified as S. niveiscabiei, and the structure of the phytotoxin was elucidated as that of the polyketide desmethylmensacarcin using MS and NMR methods. The metabolite is produced in yields of ∼200 mg/L of culture media, induces deep necrotic lesions on potato tubers, stuns root and shoot growth in radish seedlings, and is comparatively more aggressive than thaxtomin A. This is the first time that desmethylmensacarcin, a member of a class of compounds known for their antitumor and antibiotic activity, is associated with phytotoxicity. More importantly, it represents the discovery of a new virulence factor related to potato common scab, an economically-important disease affecting potato production worldwide.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Environmental pathogens, as Enterococcus faecium, are implicated in the disease. Antibiotic therapy is adequate, although it can leave residues in milk, causing problems in human health. The search of immunomodulatory substances for bovine mastitis treatment is a promising alternative strategy. The aim of this study was to characterize the effect of M. verticillata EO on macrophage phagocytosis and evaluate its immunomodulatory and protective effects in mice challenged with E. faecium. The results showed that EO activated macrophage phagocytosis mechanisms inducing reactive oxygen species production. Moreover, EO modulated the innate immune response in mammary glands of female Balb/c mice challenged with E. faecium decreasing the infiltration of polymorphonuclear neutrophils and IL-1β and TNF-α mRNA expression. In addition, EO increased the expression of IL-10 in the last hours of infection. Treatment with EO did not increase the number of activated CD4+ or CD8+ T cells or the production of specific antibodies. These results suggest that EO play an important role in helping to resolve the infection in the first hours without activating adaptive immunity. In addition, a marked decrease of the bacterial count in the glands of mice treated with EO was observed. A natural product such as M. verticillata EO could have a potential use to control bovine mastitis.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Although few information is available on the effects of these pesticides at ecological level particularly at sub-lethal doses and their interactions in a continuous multiple exposure scenario, fish species became a promising bioindicator to understand the environmental fate and dynamic of pesticides in freshwater. This review highlights latest findings concerning bioaccumulation, biotransformation and effects of pesticides on fish health. Metabolomic and proteomic studies should help to understand consequences of pesticide exposure to fish. Finally, human food safety perspectives are also discussed.]]></dcterms:abstract>

GC–MS based determinations need reduction and derivatization steps prior to MS analysis, which is performed using a Full Scan and Single Ion Monitoring sequence for screening, identification and quantification purposes. The LC–(ESI)–MS/MS determination was performed directly from the extract without derivatization. Acetyl lycopsamine, echimidine, echimidine N-oxide, echiumine, echiumine N-oxide, lycopsamine, lycopsamine N-oxide, 7,9-ditigloylretronecine N-oxide and a not reported PA of m/z 466, were identified and quantified in E. plantagineum extracts, through three operating modes of LC-QTRAP: precursor ion scan, enhanced product ion scan and multiple reaction monitoring. Precursor ion scan detects all the ions that give rise to a daughter ion at m/z 120, the presence of the parent pyrrolizidine alkaloid is confirmed through its MS2 spectrum (enhanced product ion) and quantified by multiple reaction monitoring. These workflows are general approaches to study chemical families using GC/LC-MS. For extracts suspicious of containing pyrrolizidine alkaloids, they are suitable tools for the quality and safety control of food, feed as well as phytotherapeutics.]]></dcterms:abstract>

The hybrid linear trap/triple quadrupole (LC-QTRAP) instrument was used in precursor ion scan (PIS), enhanced product ion scan (EPI), and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The parent ions from ions at m/z 120 or 138 amus, characteristic of all the toxic PAs and PANOs in the sample were first scanned by PIS. Then, the presence of each contaminant at specific retention times through its MS2 spectrum was confirmed by EPI. Finally, they were quantified in the MRM mode. The method was validated: recoveries 86–111%, relative standard deviation (RSD) <20%, at 20 and 40 μg/kg, except retrorsine, which showed a RSD of 30% at 20 μg/kg. Honey samples were analyzed and five of them showed levels of 40 μg/kg for the sum (PAs + PANOs). <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The variable VHH domains of camelid single chain antibodies have been useful in numerous biotechnology applications due to their simplicity, biophysical properties, and abilities to bind to their cognate antigens with high affinities and specificity. Their interactions with proteins have been well-studied, but considerably less work has been done to characterize their ability to bind haptens. A high-resolution structural study of three nanobodies (T4, T9, and T10) which have been shown to bind triclocarban (TCC, 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)urea) with near-nanomolar affinity shows that binding occurs in a tunnel largely formed by CDR1 rather than a surface or lateral binding mode seen in other nanobody-hapten interactions. Additional significant interactions are formed with a non-hypervariable loop, sometimes dubbed "CDR4". A comparison of apo and holo forms of T9 and T10 shows that the binding site undergoes little conformational change upon binding of TCC. Structures of three nanobody-TCC complexes demonstrated there was not a standard binding mode. T4 and T9 have a high degree of sequence identity and bind the hapten in a nearly identical manner, while the more divergent T10 binds TCC in a slightly displaced orientation with the urea moiety rotated approximately 180° along the long axis of the molecule. In addition to methotrexate, this is the second report of haptens binding in a tunnel formed by CDR1, suggesting that compounds with similar hydrophobicity and shape could be recognized by nanobodies in analogous fashion. Structure-guided mutations failed to improve binding affinity for T4 and T9 underscoring the high degree of natural optimization.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In this report, we studied the interaction between 9-vinylcarbazole (VK) –i.e. the monomer of poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK)- and a TiO2 (101) surface in order to shed some light in the interface phenomena of this promising fullerene-free donor:acceptor system as active layer for solar cells. Since the role of the TiO2 surface defects is the main concern of our study, we proceeded to simulate the adsorption of the molecule on TiO2 with oxygen or titanium atom vacancies and without any defect. All these systems were studied using First Principles calculations, utilizing Density Functional Theory (DFT). The adsorption energy of the VK monomer-TiO2 systems was favorable in all cases. The presence of vacancies in the TiO2 surface yielded modifications in the electronic properties: the difference between the LUMO level of VK and the conduction band of TiO2-O surface is only ~0.2 eV, thus allowing to infer a decrease in the energy barrier associated to the injection of electrons from VK monomer towards the TiO2-O surface. The charge density differences in all systems also revealed that the donor:acceptor model is plausible and concurs with previous results, suggesting promising features for potential application as a donor:acceptor systems in fullerene-free solar cells.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Here, we report the preparation of PEDOT:PSS-MoS2 nanocomposite thin films and their electrical resistance response under humidity conditions revealing their promising properties as humidity sensor materials. One of the most interesting features of our samples is the transition from positive to a negative electrical resistance response to humidity conditions with increasing MoS2 additions. Our confocal Raman imaging studies revealed that the presence of MoS2 yields a local charge rearrangement in the thiophenyl rings of PEDOT:PSS, in relation to the enhancement of the electrical resistance negative response as observed by impedance spectroscopy analysis. The enhancement on the negative response with increasing MoS2 additions could be explained through the increment of hole carriers in MoS2 nanosheets under humidity conditions, thus leading to an enhancement in the electrical transport along the PEDOT:PSS chains.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Silver nanoparticles were synthesized by challenging the dried biomass of C. glutamicum with aqueous diamine silver ([Ag (NH3)2]+) containing 1 mM AgNO3. Synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were characterized by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy analysis. Morphological study of silver nanoparticles was carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The spherical morphology of silver nanoparticles was confirmed from SEM image. The TEM image showed the average particle size of silver nanoparticles was about 15 nm. Silver nanoparticles synthesized from C. glutamicum were found to have enhanced antimicrobial activity against selected pathogenic strains. Silver nanoparticles from pure strains of Corynebacterium species was done by many investigators, but as per the present literature, this is the first report on the production of silver nanoparticles using a native strain of Corynebacterium.]]></dcterms:abstract>

We propose to introduce chirality by the use of enantiopure 3-halo-cis-1,2-cyclohexadienediols of microbial origin. The introduction of the alkynylic side chain by Sonogashira's methodology was successful, thus confirming a valuable strategy for the asymmetric preparation of speciosins.]]></dcterms:abstract>
