<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is an international disarmament treaty that prohibits the development, stockpiling and use of chemical weapons. This treaty has 193 States Parties (nations for which the treaty is binding) and entered into force in 1997. The CWC contains schedules of chemicals that have been associated with chemical warfare programmes. These scheduled chemicals must be declared by the States that possess them and are subject to verification by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW, the implementing body of the CWC). Isotopically labelled and stereoisomeric variants of the scheduled chemicals have presented ambiguities for interpretation of the requirements of treaty implementation, and advice was sought from the OPCW’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) in 2016. The SAB provided advice useful to resolving these ambiguities, and the technical information compiled and reviewed by the SAB is described herein. The advice provided should benefit scientists and diplomats from the CWC’s State Parties to help ensure a consistent approach to their declarations of scheduled chemicals. In this report, isotopically labelled and stereoisomeric variants of CWC-scheduled chemicals are reviewed, and the impact of the SAB advice in influencing a change to national licensing in one of the State Parties is discussed. This outcome, an update to national licensing governing compliance to an international treaty, serves as an example of the effectiveness of science diplomacy within an international disarmament treaty.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A mixed Mg2+/Al3+ oxide featuring an incipient spinel phase was employed in the catalytic decomposition of a range of phosphate triesters, including the neurotoxic biocide chlorpyrifos methyl O-analog, with estimated catalytic effects up to 104-fold. The target reaction, namely, the transesterification with 1-propanol, was conveniently chosen as a means to convert toxic organophosphorus substrates into trialkyl phosphates structurally related to a family of flame retardants. Catalytic efficiency depends upon the stereo-electronic properties of the substrate, with both leaving group ability and geometric factors displaying pivotal effects on the rate constants. To evaluate the adsorption of 1-propanol/propoxide and the phosphotriester methyl paraoxon over the MgAl2O4(100) surface, density functional theory calculations with periodic boundary conditions were performed, which showed that the most probable reactants’ conformation prior to the reaction is such that propoxide is bound to a Mg2+ center with a juxtapositioned methyl paraoxon molecule at a close, neighboring Al3+ site.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Polarized sensory positioning (PSP) is a novel methodology for sensory characterization which is based on the comparison among samples and a set of reference products, called poles. Its main advantage over other holistic methodologies is that results from different sessions can be compared. This is particularly useful when working with samples with persistent flavours, when evaluating a large number of samples over a long period of time, or during quality control. Although the key step of this methodology is the selection of the products to be considered as poles, no studies have been published addressing this issue. In this context, the aim of the present work was to contribute to bridging this gap by studying the influence of the poles on results from sensory characterization of two widely different products (make-up foundations and orange-flavoured powdered drinks) using Polarized Sensory Positioning with consumers. Results from both studies provided preliminary evidence about the stability of sensory spaces obtained with different set of poles (RV coefficients higher than 0.908). For decades, descriptive analysis with trained assessors has been regarded as the gold standard for describing the sensory characteristics of products. <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[This chapter reviews the most relevant advancements in consumer science, from a methodological perspective, starting from a historical standpoint and highlighting the main areas of development and discussing the whys. Among the topics reviewed are the shift from standardized sensory description to consumer-based feedback; going beyond hedonics toward more complex, interdisciplinary food choice models that take into account context, situation, consumer attitudes and values; the growing interest in emotional research; and the study of the extended eating experience (food behavior, well-being). Also covered are methodological advancements in qualitative and quantitative consumer research, adapting methods from psychology and behavioral economics, and the use of nondirected and implicit methods, as well as considering heuristics in food choice. The chapter also reviews the importance of planning specific studies and applications with special populations from a socioeconomic perspective and from a cognitive perspective. Based on the recent advancements, the future and remaining challenges in consumer science are discussed as concluding remarks. As this is the introductory chapter, we detail the chapters that look in depth into the different areas of consumer science in the two volumes of the present book.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Two-dimensional materials as electrodes have significant potential in energy storage and conversion and can address the issues related to battery technologies. Accordingly, first-principles calculations were executed to search for the best possible anode material for Li/Na ion batteries. Three families of dual-doped graphene (DDG) including Be–B, BeN, and BeO were studied because it is easier to synthesize DDG instead of its mono-doped counterpart. Among them, Be–B DDG was found to be the most promising since it can cause a massive increase in the adsorption of Li (2.33 eV, by 3.1 times) and Na (2.24 eV, by 4.3 times) at the vdW-DF/DZP level of theory. The integration of these ions caused the structures to become metallic, resulting in good electronic conductivity, which is essential for anode materials. Furthermore, Be–B DDG exhibited an average open circuit voltage of 2.34 V (1.3* V) and 1.82 V (1.02* V) for Li and Na, respectively, when the energy of the isolated gas-phase (* represents the energy of one atom taken from the bulk) is used for Li and Na. This modest average open circuit voltage of 1.3* V for Li is in the range of that of the most commonly used graphite-Li (0.11 V) and TiO2-Li (1.5–1.8 V). Moreover, the negligible percentage change in the plane of Be–B DDG during the intercalation of Li/Na ensured good cyclic stability. Additionally, the exceptional storage capacities of 2334 mA h g−1 for Li and 1012 mA h g−1 for Na with an open circuit voltage of 0.23* V and 0.25* V, respectively, shows that Be–B DDG has potential as a remarkable anode material for LIBs and SIBs.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Our results show that microparticles are efficiently internalised in a non-opsonised form and in dose-dependent manner by both cellular types. <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[OBJECTIVES: A Neisseria gonorrhoeae antimicrobial susceptibility quality control comparison programme was re-established in Latin America and the Caribbean to ensure antimicrobial susceptibility data produced from the region are comparable nationally and internationally. METHODS: Three panels, consisting of N. gonorrhoeae isolates comprising reference strains and other characterised isolates were sent to 11 participating laboratories between 2013 and 2015. Antimicrobial susceptibilities for these isolates were determined using agar dilution, Etest or disc diffusion methods. Modal minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for each panel isolate/antibiotic combination were calculated. The guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute were used for interpretations of antimicrobial susceptibility. The agreement of MICs with the modal MICs was determined for each of the participating laboratories as well as for each of the antibiotics tested. RESULTS: Five of 11 laboratories that participated in at least one panel had an overall average agreement between participants' MIC results and modal MICs of >90%. For other laboratories, agreements ranged from 60.0% to 82.4%. The proportion of agreement between interpretations for all the antibiotics, except penicillin and tetracycline, was >90%. The percentages of agreement between MIC results and their modes for erythromycin, spectinomycin, cefixime and azithromycin were >90%. Tetracycline, ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin agreement ranged from 84.5% to 89.1%, while penicillin had 78.8% agreement between MICs and modal MICs. CONCLUSIONS: The participating laboratories had acceptable results, similar to other international quality assurance programmes. It is important to ensure continuation of the International Gonococcal Antimicrobial Susceptibility Quality Control Comparison Programme to ensure that participants can identify and correct any problems in antimicrobial susceptibility testing for N. gonorrhoeae as they arise and continue to generate reproducible and reliable data.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The maintenance of thiol–redox homeostasis is vital to the survival of living organisms. Sulfur-based low-molecular weight compounds and proteins synthesized by cells provide efficient and specific ways to counteract oxidative stress and regulate cellular processes. For these tasks, most organisms share the glutathione and thioredoxin NADPH-dependent redox systems. However, in certain lineages, evolution has taken different paths that led to the emergence of novel cysteine-based low-molecular weight redox cofactors, around which new redox systems evolved. These include the sugar-based cysteinyl derivatives mycothiol and bacillithiol, and ergothioneine (EGT), which are present in different phyla from bacteria. Within Eukarya, some fungi contain EGT, whereas trypanothione is unique to species from the Euglenozoa family. This Forum compiles the state-of-the-art knowledge about these noncanonical redox systems of pathogenic organisms. The functions in physiology and pathogenicity, as well as structural and biochemical specializations that these system components evolved, are thoroughly discussed.]]></dcterms:abstract>
