    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In recent years methodological research into application of CATA questions has gained momentum. Yet, key questions for this approach remain unaddressed &ndash; how to generate the sensory terms that populate CATA questions and how many terms should be used. The second of these questions was addressed in seven consumer studies, involving a total of 735 consumers and five product categories (crackers, cheese, fruit-flavored drinks, chocolate, milk desserts). Sensory product characterizations elicited with &lsquo;&lsquo;short&rsquo;&rsquo; and &lsquo;&lsquo;long&rsquo;&rsquo; CATA questions (10&ndash;17 terms vs. 20&ndash;28 terms) were compared on a number of criteria such as frequency of CATA term use, product differences, spatial configurations (samples and terms) and task perceptions. Two strategies for generating &lsquo;&lsquo;long&rsquo;&rsquo; lists of CATA terms were examined: adding synonym terms to those already featuring on the &lsquo;&lsquo;short&rsquo;&rsquo; list (e.g., &lsquo;hard&rsquo; and &lsquo;firm&rsquo;), and adding antonym terms to those already featuring on the &lsquo;&lsquo;short&rsquo;&rsquo; list (e.g., &lsquo;hard&rsquo; and &lsquo;not hard&rsquo; or &lsquo;natural&rsquo; and &lsquo;artificial&rsquo;). Between-subjects experimental designs were used to compare product characterizations from &lsquo;&lsquo;short&rsquo;&rsquo; and &lsquo;&lsquo;long&rsquo;&rsquo; CATA questions. Results revealed that &lsquo;&lsquo;short&rsquo;&rsquo; and &lsquo;&lsquo;long&rsquo;&rsquo; lists of CATA terms generated largely similar results. In general, sample configurations were very similar, as were task perceptions. However, there were, at times, differences in frequency of CATA term use and term configurations, as well as instances where conclusions about sample differences depended on whether &lsquo;&lsquo;short&rsquo;&rsquo; or &lsquo;&lsquo;long&rsquo;&rsquo; CATA lists were used. Additionally, here was some evidence that CATA questions with &lsquo;&lsquo;long&rsquo;&rsquo; lists of synonym or antonym terms may cause a &lsquo;&lsquo;dilution&rsquo;&rsquo; effect of the responses. This fits expectations of idiosyncrasy in consumer perception/expression of sensory stimuli, but may be associated with reduced discriminatory ability of the CATA question. How to best balance these opposing considerations is deserving of further investigation.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[CATA questions (check-all-that-apply) are popular for sensory product characterisation tasks with consumers. Lingering uncertainty over the meaning of term citation frequency was addressed in the present research, which directly compared CATA questions with intensity and applicability ratings obtained on 10 cm unstructured line scales. In three studies (n ~ 210 consumers per study), evidence fitting with expectations based on the extant literature was obtained to confirm that citation frequency reflects intensity. The two response types were strongly linearly related, meaning that it is possible to infer significant differences between samples for a given CATA term as representing differences in perceived intensity. This finding emphasises how, despite the simplicity of the CATA task and the fact that individual responses are not measures of intensity, the average citation frequencies do reflect perceived intensity. Therefore, across a group of consumers, there is no information loss relative to rating scales. A systematic difference between citation frequencies and intensity ratings was attenuation of scale use in the latter, which was between 15 and 80 on a 0 to 100 scale. Attenuation was less pronounced in CATA responses which spanned approx. 5 to 85%. In the second part of the research, which included six studies (n ~ 135 to 205 consumers per study) CATA questions were compared with applicability ratings obtained on 10 cm unstructured line scales. The results were highly similar to the comparison between CATA questions and intensity scales and further confirmed that average CATA term citation frequency can be interpreted as representing (but not directly measuring) consumers&rsquo; intensity perceptions. The attenuation in scale range was again observed. Collectively, the results contribute further support for the popularity of CATA questions for sensory characterization by consumers in product testing.

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In light of the growing interest in the use of check-all-that-apply (CATA) methodology for sensory product characterization, this research considered methodological aspects of importance for further uptake. Quantitative indices were developed to calculate within-assessor reproducibility and attribute stability. Across several studies (n  200), it was found that consumers are able to reproduce their sensory product characterizations. Relative to the index proposed by Campo et al. [Australian Journal of Grape and Wine Research 14 (2008) 104&ndash;115], the new global within-assessor reproducibility index is proposed as more appropriate for CATA applications that does not limit the number of terms that can be ticked as applicable and when all the terms are applicable to the product category. Heterogeneity was uncovered in withinassessor reproducibility. It was also found that product characterizations elicited by consumers were stable. There was evidence of stability in attribute use being dependent on the nature of the attribute, suggesting that the list of terms included in CATA questions is of considerable importance, and should be carefully selected. The empirical work was done in two countries and across multiple product categories, adding robustness to the findings.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Mammalian cells contain a pool of iron that is not strongly bound to proteins, which can be detected with fluorescent chelating probes. The cellular ligands of this biologically important &lsquo;&lsquo;chelatable&rsquo;&rsquo;, &lsquo;&lsquo;labile&rsquo;&rsquo; or &lsquo;&lsquo;transit&rsquo;&rsquo; iron are not known. Proposed ligands are problematic, because they are saturated by magnesium under cellular conditions and/or because they are not &lsquo;&lsquo;safe&rsquo;&rsquo;, i.e. they allow iron to catalyse hydroxyl radical formation. Among small cellular molecules, certain inositol phosphates (InsPs) excel at complexing Fe3? in such a &lsquo;&lsquo;safe&rsquo;&rsquo; manner in vitro. However, we previously calculated that the most abundant InsP, inositol hexakisphosphate, cannot interact with Fe3? in the presence of cellular concentrations of Mg2?. In this work, we study the metal complexation behaviour of inositol 1,2,3-trisphosphate [Ins(1,2,3)P3], a cellular constituent of unknown function and the simplest InsP to display high-affinity, &lsquo;&lsquo;safe&rsquo;&rsquo;, iron complexation. We report thermodynamic constants for the interaction of Ins(1,2,3)P3 with Na?, K?, Mg2?, Ca2?, Cu2?, Fe2? and Fe3?. Our calculations indicate that Ins(1,2,3)P3 can be expected to complex all available Fe3? in a quantitative, 1:1 reaction, both in cytosol/nucleus and in acidic compartments, in which an important labile iron subpool is thought to exist. In addition, we calculate that the fluorescent iron probe calcein would strip Fe3? from Ins(1,2,3)P3 under cellular conditions, and hence labile iron detected using this probe may include iron bound to Ins(1,2,3)P3. Therefore Ins(1,2,3)P3 is the first viable proposal for a transit iron ligand.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Chemical and sensory properties of Torront&eacute;s Riojano sparkling wines, prepared using second fermentation with Saccharomyces strains EC1118, bayanus C12 and IFI473I, were explored. All sparkling wines showed high levels of several volatile ethyl esters and terpenes associated to fruity and floral aromas. The sensory profiles showed significant differences for the floral aroma descriptor among EC1118, bayanus C12 and IFI473I and for bubble persistence for strain bayanus C12. Our results suggest that the sensory properties of these sparkling wines could be dependent on the chemical and organoleptic properties of the base wine more than the yeast strain used for second fermentation.

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[This study characterised the chemical and sensory properties of 15 non-spreadable goat cheeses (eight fresh and seven ripened). The majority of the cheeses had a short ripening period. Hence, low free fatty acid (FFA) contents were detected. The main difference among the cheeses was the short-chain FFA content, which was higher in the ripened cheeses, and responsible for their distinctive odours and flavours. In both types of cheeses (fresh and ripened), lactic acid was the most abundant organic acid (OA), followed by propionic acid. Hierarchical cluster analysis identified three distinct groups of samples with marked differences in their texture and flavour attributes. The percentage of moisture was positively correlated to sensory attributes such as surface film, solubility, moistness and sourness, and negatively correlated to the firmness and saltiness. No significant correlation was found among sensory attributes and total fat percentage or any of the OAs.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Differences in sexual signals among species are common, and may influence mate recognition and reproductive isolation. In scorpions, behavioural mechanisms and other sexual signals involved in mate selection and reproductive isolation have been scarcely studied. In this paper, we compare different male sexual signals between two distant populations of the scorpion Bothriurus bonariensis, one located in Uruguay and the other in Central Argentina. We compare sexual behaviours from intra-populations and inter-populations matings. In addition, we extent this comparison to the secreted compounds and morphology of the exocrine glands located on the dorsal side of the telson in this species. Males of B. bonariensis performed stimulatory behaviours to the female with different frequency of occurrence and duration in the two populations. Chemical analyses of the glandular extracts showed that Uruguayan males present compounds which are absent in males of Argentinian population. In addition, we observed that in inter-population matings, stimulatory behaviours had intermediate patterns to intra-population matings. However, males failed to achieve a successful sperm transfer with females of different population. Mechanisms of sexual isolation between these two distant populations of B. bonariensis apparently seem to have evolved due to divergence in allopatry. The differences in stimulatory levels during courtship between the two populations studied here give evidence for an early behavioural divergence promoted by sexual selection.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>Haemonchus contortus, a blood-sucking parasite of small ruminants, produces very important economic losses in the productive sector. This abomasum parasite has become resistant to most commercial drugs worldwide, and alternatives to fight this problem are urgently needed. Essential oils (EO) are a complex mixture of volatile secondary metabolites, composed mainly by terpenoids and phenolic compounds, from plants that have several pharmacological properties, including anthelmintic activity. Particularly, citrus peel is a source of cold-pressed EO, where limonene is its major component, and can be used as an additional food component for ruminants. The<br />aim of the present work was to determine the in vitro anthelmintic activity of EO from Citrus bergamia (EOB), C. x<br />paradisii (EOG) and limonene against the benzimidazole-susceptible Kirby isolate of H. contortus, using the egg hatch test (EHT) and the exsheathed third stage larval motility test (XLMT) using a WMicroTracker equipment. Albendazole (ABZ) and monepantel (MON) were used as positive controls. The 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC50) in XLMT were 8.77 and 13.88 &mu;g/ml for EOB and EOG respectively, after an incubation of 72 h. An interesting observation on XLMT resulted when the positive controls were tested on the same plate, but in different well of the EOB. The volatile components of the EO significantly influenced (P &lt; 0.05) the percentage of larval motility, reducing values from 66.9 to 19.6% for ABZ, and from 72.8 to 33.7% for MON, when comparing the activity of positive controls in a control plate without EO. The in vitro anthelmintic activity of EOB and EOG shows that they could be interesting candidates for nematode control. It is still necessary additional studies<br />against the adult stage of H. contortus in efficacy trials in infected animals to validate their anthelmintic activity.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

Galactose, N-acetylgalactosamine, and N-acetylglucosamine were detected in the deproteinized acetone powder. The molar ratio of galactose to hexosamines was 1:1, and the ratio between both amino sugars was found to be 9&ndash;10 moles of N-acetylgalactosamine to 1 mole of N-acetylglucosamine.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Mate finding in many spider species is mediated, at least in part, by chemical cues. Although few have been characterized, most spider sex pheromones seem to be associated with the silk threads of adult females, attracting and/or triggering sexual behaviors in males. Schizocosa malitiosa (Araneae: Lycosidae) is a wolf spider common in dry environments in Southern Uruguay. Here, we report evidence for the occurrence of a female sex pheromone in the silk of virgin S. malitiosa females. The pheromone elicits typical courtship displays by conspecific males (palpal drumming and leg shaking), when it is applied to an artificial substrate. We also showed that this pheromone is quickly inactivated under field conditions, possibly due to the effect of dew, and that it is readily extracted from the silk by water, which renders the silk threads inactive. Preliminary chemical analyses by mass spectrometry suggest that the pheromone is a low molecular weight, highly oxygenated polar compound, present in a high concentration only in older virgin females. Quick inactivation in the field of the pheromone would allow males to discriminate between recent and old cues, thus facilitating mate searching and sexual meeting, by preventing males from following old cues for wandering females that could be distant in space and/or time.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The essential oils of two Anacardiaceae species, Schinus molle L. and Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi, native from Brazil, were obtained by hydrodistillation and the oils composition studied by capillary GC and GC-MS. Twenty seven compounds were identified for S. molle and twenty nine for S. terebinthifolius. The leaves and fruits essential oils for both S. molle and S. terebinthifolius were characterised by a high percentage of sesquiterpene and monoterpene hydrocarbons. The S. terebinthifolius essential oils obtained from leaves and berries presented differences with those previously described in the literature, while the leave oil of S. molle showed similar composition to that from Uruguay. These findings have ecological and economic significance as S. molle and S. terebinthifolius are promising species in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and chemical industries.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The volatile components isolated from the root of Angelica (Angelica archangelica L.) cultivated in southern Brazil have been studied. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation; the volatile concentrate was obtained by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). SFE was conducted at 40&deg;C, 50&deg;C and 60&deg;C, at pressures ranging from 90&ndash;120 bar. The identification of the components was completed using capillary gas chromatography and mass spectrometry based on the retention time on methyl silicone phases. Chemical analysis revealed that although roughly the same compounds were extracted, the two oils had a widely different percentage composition. The supercritical CO2 extraction exhibited a higher number and concentration of oxygenated compounds.<br /><br />]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[This study aimed to characterize the chemical composition of Aloysia polystachia, Acantholippia seriphioides, Schinus molle, Solidago chilensis, Lippia turbinata, Minthostachys mollis, Buddleja globosa, and Baccharis latifolia essential oils (EOs), and to evaluate their antibacterial activities and their capacity to provoke membrane disruption in Paenibacillus larvae, the bacteria that causes the American Foulbrood (AFB) disease on honey bee larvae. The relationship between the composition of the EOs and these activities on P. larvae was also analyzed. Monoterpenes were the most abundant compounds in all EOs. All EOs showed antimicrobial activity against P. larvae and disrupted the cell wall and cytoplasmic membrane of P. larvae provoking the leakage of cytoplasmic constituents (with the exception of B. latifolia EO). While, the EOs&rsquo; antimicrobial activity was correlated most strongly to the content of pulegone, carvone, (Z)-&beta;-ocimene, &delta;-cadinene, camphene, terpinen-4-ol, elemol, &beta;-pinene, &beta;-elemene, &gamma;-cadinene, &alpha;-terpineol, and bornyl acetate; the volatiles that better explained the membrane disruption were carvone, limonene, cis-carvone oxide, pentadecane, trans-carvyl acetate, trans-carvone oxide, trans-limonene oxide, artemisia ketone, trans-carveol, thymol, and &gamma;-terpinene (positively correlated) and biciclogermacrene, &delta;-2-carene, verbenol, &alpha;-pinene, and &alpha;-thujene (negatively correlated). The studied EOs are proposed as natural alternative means of control for the AFB disease.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Differences in female/male plant metabolism for dioecious species are poorly understood but relevant if the economic exploitation of such resources is the objective. In this work, the composition of Baccharis tridentata Vahl essential oil from the flowering aerial parts of male and female plants was analysed separately by GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry; area percentage and internal standard), and CPGC-MS (chiral phase gas chromatography analysis using modified &beta;-cyclodextrin), reporting the enantiomeric distribution of monoterpene hydrocarbons as a genuineness criterion. The results confirmed high qualitative similarities between the essential oils from both genders, but quantitative differences in the main components &alpha;-pinene, &beta;-pinene, limonene and bornyl acetate. Regarding the CPGC-MS analysis of monoterpene hydrocarbons, both sexes presented both enantiomers in the same ratios, which is in contrast to the values reported in the literature for related plants. However, natural bornyl acetate (isolated from B. tridentata essential oil) demonstrated a 100% enantiomeric excess of the levogyre enantiomer, a fact that has chemotaxonomic relevance.

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The larva of the green lacewing (Ceraeochrysa cubana) (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) is a natural predator of eggs of Utetheisa ornatrix (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae), a moth that sequesters pyrrolizidine alkaloids from its larval foodplant (Fabaceae, Crotalaria spp.). Utetheisa eggs are ordinarily endowed with the alkaloid. Alkaloidfree Utetheisa eggs, produced experimentally, are pierced by the larva with its sharp tubular jaws and sucked out. Alkaloid-laden eggs, in contrast, are rejected. When attacking an Utetheisa egg cluster (numbering on average 20 eggs), the larva subjects it to an inspection process. It prods and/or pierces a small number of eggs (on average two to three) and, if these contain alkaloid, it passes "negative judgement" on the remainder of the cluster and turns away. Such generalization on the part of the larva makes sense, because the eggs within clusters differ little in alkaloid content. There is, however, considerable between-cluster variation in egg alkaloid content, so clusters in nature can be expected to range widely in palatability. To check each cluster for acceptability must therefore be adaptive for the larva, just as it must be adaptive for Utetheisa to lay its eggs in large clusters and to apportion alkaloid evenly among eggs of a cluster.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The earwig Doru taeniatum (Dermaptera, Forficulidae) has a pair of defensive glands, opening on the 4th abdominal tergite, from which it discharges a spray when disturbed. It aims the discharges by revolving the abdomen, a maneuver that enables it simultaneously to use its pincers in defense. The secretion contains two quinones (methyl-1,4-benzoquinone and 2,3-dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone) present in the glands as a crystalline mass, together with pentadecane and a (presumably) aqueous phase. The gland openings are minute, with the result that virtually no quinone crystals are expelled with the spray. Only the two liquid phases are discharged, together with the ca. 1% quinone they carry in solution. Such a solute-economizing discharge mechanism appears to be without parallel among insect defensive glands.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The opilionid Acanthopachylus aculeatus was shown to produce a defensive secretion containing quinones (2,3-dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone, 2,5-dimethyl-1,4- benzoquinone and 2,3,5-trimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone), confirming the findings reported nearly a half century ago in a classic study. The mechanism by which the opilionid puts the secretion to use is described. When disturbed, the animal regurgitates enteric fluid, which it conveys by intercoxal clefts to the anterolateral corners of the carapace, where the two gland openings are situated. It then injects some of its quinonoid secretion into the fluid, and conveys the mixed liquid along the length of its flanks by way of two special channels. Such a discharge mechanism may be widespread among opilionids of the family Gonyleptidae (suborder Laniatores), to which A. aculeatus belongs. In a bioassay based on a scratch reflex in decapitated cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) the liquid effluent of A. aculeatus was shown to be potently irritating. Use of the effluent was demonstrated to protect the opilionid against ants (Formica exsectoides). Wolf spiders (Lycosa ceratiola) were shown to be minimally affected by the effluent (they showed little response when the fluid was added to their mouthparts as they fed on mealworms, their normal laboratory prey), although they proved to be aversive to mere contact with the opiliond itself, and to reject the animal without inducing it to discharge. A. aculeatus may therefore contain distasteful factors besides its glandular products.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Evidence is presented that pyrrolizidine alkaloid acquired by Utetheisa ornatrix (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae) as a larva from Crotalaria foodplants is incorporated in part into the scales of the adult. A single forewing of a male or female moth may contain in the order of 6 to 13 &mu;g monocrotaline in its scale cover or about 1 to 2% of the moth&rsquo;s systemic monocrotaline content. Based on estimates of the number of scales per forewing, the monocrotaline content of individual scales is calculated to be in the order of 0.1 and 0.2 ng monocrotaline per male and female scale, respectively. This amounts to concentrations of about 1 and 3%, values roughly at a par with the average systemic concentration (0.5&ndash;0.6%) previously determined for monocrotaline in Utetheisa. It is argued that the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloid in the moth&rsquo;s scale coating could account for the promptness with which adult Utetheisa are rejected by spiders. It is suggested further that chemical impregnation of scales with substances deterrent to predators may be more widespread among insects than generally assumed.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Oils from seeds of the Cucurbitaceae family were extracted and composition refractive index iodine value and hydroxyl value determined. It can be noticed from the results obtained that the component acids are of a more or less simple nature and do not contain conjugated acids. The low values determined of the hydroxyl number indicate the absence of natural hydroxylated fatty acids or of important damage produced by either the storage of seeds or the process of extraction. The fatty acids composition and properties indicate that the oils should be quite suitable for edible and soap-making purposes.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Cucurbitacins are secondary metabolites that mediate insect plant interactions not only as allomones against generalists but also as kairomones for specialist herbivores. This study was undertaken to identify the potential of cucurbitacin derivatives as insect antifeedant agents. The antifeedant capacity against a Cucurbitaceae specialist [Epilachna paenulata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)] and a polyphagous insect [Pseudaletia adultera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)] was evaluated in preference tests in which the insects were given a choice between food plants either treated with the cucurbitacin derivatives or treated with the solvent. The activity was found not to be related to the basic cucurbitacin skeleton, as only 15 of the 28 tested cucurbitacin derivatives were active. Only one of the tested compounds was phagostimulant to the specialist insect (the hemissuccinate of 16-oxo-dihydrocucurbitacin B derivative), while all other active derivatives were deterrent against one of the insects (13 compounds) or both of them (3 compounds). Changes in ring A of the cucurbitacins, as well as in the side chain, modified the activity. As a general trend, when chemical modifications of the basic structure produced a change in activity, the response was opposite in both insects used as biodetectors, indicating that a selective variation in the activity may be achieved by chemical modifications of the cucurbitacin skeleton.]]></dcterms:abstract>
