<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[We report a new method for efficient and rapid synthesis of HYNIC-hydrazone derivatives using microwaveassisted solid-phase. In comparison to the conventional heating procedure, microwave irradiation considerably accelerated the formation of HYNIC analogues. The synthesis time and efforts are significantly reduced in the present method, without side product formation. We proved that the HYNIC-hydrazone clustering can be directly labeled with technetium without exposing the free hydrazine group. Therefore, this is a useful tool to obtain HYNIC-bioconjugates for use in 99mTc radiochemistry]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Bees are widely recognized as biomonitors of the environment. However, simple, low cost indicators based on bee activities (other than mortality) that can be used to monitor agroecosystems' environmental status have not been reported yet. Biological and chemical indicators were evaluated using Support Vector Machine (SVM) models. The objective was to classify environments into the categories of affected and non (or minimally) affected by pesticides presence. SVM models based on simple population and brood area estimations provided 57% accuracy in classifications. Models based on variables constructed using chemical analysis results (the number of pesticides detected in each sample; the total sum of toxic units, related to bees and mammals; and the sum of field Environmental Impact Quotient, EIQ, of each detected pesticide) provided 100% accuracy in classifications. This fact can be used to obtain biological indicators from a wide number of sites and apply the SVM model to indicate risky seasons and ecosystems where further chemical indicators should be studied. As the input variables are totally explicit and can be changed or updated, the approach followed in this study using SVM provides a stable basis to improve the development of indicators for agricultural production systems biomonitoring. In addition to these cases, also the inclusion of a zinc atom, with a 3d10 electron configuration, was also studied. Structural distortions and magnetic response for each system were studied. A correlation was found for the magnitude of the rippling and the distortion in the vacancy. Variation in the trends was found for Cu and Zn cases, which were explained on the basis of the filling of the 3dx2-y2 orbital. All the systems exhibit lower magnetic moment in comparison to the metal-less system. The quenching of the magnetic moment due to the carbon atoms in the vacancy is observed for Sc and Cu.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Our structural studies revealed that the intercalation of MoS2 nanosheets into polyaniline fibers produces a decrease in the MoS2 interlayer distance and a slight increase in the degree of order of the nanocomposites. In addition, an increment in the polaron Raman signature was observed with the addition of MoS2 nanosheets into polyaniline nanocomposites in agreement with the enhancement of the electrical conductivity, i.e. up to ~ 2.5 S cm−1. The addition of low amounts of MoS2 also lead to an increment of the seebeck coefficient (up to 5.3 µV K−1) and power factor (up to 0.0070 µV m−1 K−2). <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The optical properties and the geometric characteristics of multivacancy graphene quantum dots systems are studied using Density Functional Theory calculations, in a systematic way, in relation to the number of carbon atoms extracted and the relative configurations that could be present in the cluster. The way to characterize these configurations was using the complementary figure model -i.e. the figure formed by the carbon atoms extracted in order that the vacancy could be created-. The number of pentagonal or square figures formed after structure optimization, as well as their relative location, is found to be very relevant to determine the curvature level of the graphene quantum dot, but the occurrence of higher order cycles have a non-negligible role and cannot be ruled out. However, this occurrence is much dependent on the specific multivacancy to be studied and prevents to reach more accurate models that could allow the prediction of the magnitude of the curvature. We found unexpected instability in dendritic-like vacancies and we suggest that the non-periodic character of the graphene quantum dot, in contrast to graphene, would prevent such vacancies to be relaxed in a higher extension, causing this kind of systems to be less stable than, for example, zigzag complementary figures systems.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In this report, we used ab initio calculations in order to study the effect of Pt doping in monolayer MoS2. The Pt doping introduces important distortions at the geometrical levels, that induces the appearance of impurity levels, expressed as flat bands, in the proximity of the Fermi level, thus reducing the band gap. The vibrational analysis confirms the reduction of symmetry, and the simulated off-resonance Raman spectra presents important differences when comparted with pristine MoS2 monolayer, with relevant bands located at ∼50, 150, 220, 300 and 330 cm−1. All this confirm that Pt doping could be possible, allowing electronic and vibrational tuning of their properties and this work provides the tool for a potential identification of these modifications at the experimental level.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The interaction between a complex porphyrin-like system formed by an iron atom and multivacant graphene layer and O2, CO and CO2 molecules is studied, using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The multivacancy graphene system used for this study, consists in the removal of a 1,4-dimethybenzene-like moiety, in a 6 × 6 supercell. This removal and the structural optimization subsequently performed, yield to a biaxial vacancy, where the location of an iron atom embedded in it, lead to a system with resemblance to iron-porphyrin systems. This similar structure could be used to form complexes where gas molecules are allowed to interact with these iron-octavacant graphene systems. The study focuses on the structure of the system and the net magnetic moment for different gas molecules: O2, CO2 and CO. Rippling in the vacant graphene is enhanced through this interaction]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In this work, 2-isopropenyl-3-methylphenol, hereafter referred to as carquejiphenol (CARP), a minor component of “carqueja” essential oil, was synthesized starting from carquejol and characterized by using Fourier Transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopies, Ultraviolet–Visible (UV–Visible) spectroscopy, Electron Impact Mass spectrometry (EI-MS), Hydrogen and Carbon Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H- and 13C-NMR) and 2D 1H1H gCOSY, 1H13C gHSQC, 1H13C gHMBC experiments. A very good correlation between the predicted FTIR, FTRaman, UV–visible and 1H13C-NMR spectra for monomer and dimer of CARP by using theoretical B3LYP/6-31G* and 6-311++G** calculations with the corresponding experimental ones was observed. The solvation energies for CARP were predicted by using both levels of calculations and considering the solvent effects with the polarised continuum and solvation models. The increase in volume in solution supports the H bonds formation due to the presence in its structure of an OH group, as revealed by atoms in molecules (AIM) analysis. A high stability for CARP was found by using natural bond orbital (NBO) and AIM studies, while the investigation of the frontier orbitals reveals that CARP is more reactive than carquejol and N-(3,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-hexadecanamide but less reactive than the sesquiterpene lactone cnicin. The proximity of both the electrophilicy and nucleophilicity index of CARP with those obtained respectively for carquejol and for N-(3,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-hexadecanamide, suggests that CARP could probably present pharmacological properties. The scaled quantum mechanical force field (SQMFF) methodology was used to compute the harmonic force fields and to perform the complete vibrational analysis. In this way, 63 normal modes of vibration were assigned and compared with other terpene substances.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Baccharis trimera (Less.) DC. (Asteraceae), ‘carqueja', is a medicinal plant native from South America employed as decoction or infusion for the treatment of low to moderate ailments, and included in the Brazilian Pharmacopeia. This plant is also a rich source of essential oil (EO) valuable in the fragrance industry, mainly owing to carquejyl acetate, carquejol and several sesquiterpenic alcohols contributing to its characteristic aroma reminisce of rosewood. In this work, we report the EO composition, morpho-anatomical and histochemical characterization of B. trimera growing wild in Uruguay. 150 compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS), 79 of them not previously reported for this species, whose relative proportions varied according the season. Anatomically, the specimens analyzed did not present any leaves nor ribs between the wings. The epidermis presented polygonal cells with straight anticlinal walls, with anisocytic and less frequently anomocytic stomata. Non-glandular (multicellular, unistratified, with a characteristic elongated apex cell) and glandular (multicellular, bistratified, EO positive) trichomes were evidenced. The mesophyll at the wing level was isolateral with a central spongy parenchyma. Schyzogenous ducts with bistratified secretory epithelium (EO and polyphenols positive), were occasionally associated with the endodermis. The perimedullar parenchyma of the cladodes presented polyhedral pyramidal and prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate, according to previous reports.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Purpose Solid dispersions (SDs) of a poorly water-soluble drug were prepared, and their physicochemical properties were compared to those of control physical mixtures (PMs). Among the multiple techniques used to characterize the solid state of preparations, confocal micro Raman spectroscopy (CMRS) was used as a non-destructive tool to qualitatively probe content uniformity and distribution of drug and carrier. Methods SDs and PMs of drug (fenbendazole, FBZ) were prepared containing two different carriers (poloxamer P188 or P407) with different drug polymer ratios. The preparations were characterized by powder X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and in vitro dissolution assay. In addition, CMRS technique and principal component analysis (PCA) were used in order to statistically define the content uniformity and distribution of the drug within the polymeric matrix. Results In vitro dissolution results exhibited a marked improvement when the drug was formulated as SD compared to control PM and to pure drug. The solid state of these preparations characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed no changes in the crystalline state of the drug and no chemical interactions between the components. Raman studies showed a better content uniformity of the drug within the polymeric matrix when subjected to SD process, correlating with the improved dissolution profile. Conclusion This study provides evidence of the potential of the confocal Raman imaging technique, providing a fast and powerful method to characterize solid dispersions which could be incorporated towards the use of quality by design (QbD) approaches in pharmaceutical development.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The nitrilotripropionic acid (H3ntp) is a flexible polycarboxylate ligand that has been used in the preparation of polynuclear compounds with several metal cations. In this work, we present the in solution study of the interaction of ntp with a wide range of metal ions (M): Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Fe(III). The species [Mntp]−, [M(Hntp)], and [M3(Hntp)2]2+ were detected for most metal ions. In the case of Cu(II), the potentiometric model was also supported through additional thermodynamic characterization by spectroscopy. We also performed computational calculations at the UB3LYP/LANL2DZ SMD level of theory that allowed us to predict the electronic spectra of the proposed species. The computational model showed a satisfactory performance, as demonstrated by the calculated electronic spectra fit to the experimental data. A possible assembly mechanism for the reported capsule-shaped complex [Cu3(Hntp)2]2+ is proposed.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Furthermore, TXRF and two other analytical techniques currently used for elemental analysis in foodstuffs, namely flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS), were compared to confirm the suitability of TXRF for routine and screening analyses of metallic elements in wheat flour. The TXRF sample preparation procedure takes around 6 min and does not require a mineralization step. Although the detection limits of the TXRF technique were higher than those of FAAS and ETAAS, they were suitable for the proposed purpose. The advantages of the proposed method are also discussed. The TXRF method was applied to the analysis of five commercial wheat flour samples representing all brands available in Montevideo, Uruguay. TXRF proved to be suitable for the determination of Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn in wheat flour, and is a promising technique for routine and screening analyses of bakery foodstuffs.]]></dcterms:abstract>

DESIGN: Images of front-of-pack (FOP) nutrition labels (the traffic light labeling system with different numbers of nutrients with low content, and warnings) were evaluated in study 1, whereas product labels featuring the different FOP nutrition labels were evaluated in study 2. SETTING: Online studies conducted in Montevideo, Uruguay. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 1,228 Uruguayan Facebook users. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Perception of healthfulness. ANALYSIS: The researchers used ANOVA to evaluate the influence of FOP nutrition labels on perceived healthfulness. RESULTS: The inclusion of information about low nutrient content in the traffic light system statistically significantly increased the perception of the healthfulness of products with high nutrient content. Nutritional warnings showed healthfulness ratings similar to those of the simplified version of the traffic light system. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Information about low nutrient content in the traffic light system might be used to infer health, and thus could raise the perception of healthfulness and decrease the traffic light system's efficacy in discouraging the consumption of unhealthful products. A simplified version of the traffic light highlighting only high-nutrient content or nutritional warnings seems to overcome this problem.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In order to seek for new compounds with antitumor activity, our research group is focused on copper complexes with mixed ligands. This work presents the synthesis and characterization of eight compounds with general formula [Cu(iminodiacetate)(diimine)(H2O)x], with x = 0 or 1, and their cytotoxic activities against tumor cells. The chosen diimine ligands were: 2,2́-dipyridil-amine (bam), 2,2́-bipyridine (bipy), 4,4́-dimethyl-2,2́-bipyridine (dmb), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 4-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline (4met-phen), 5-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline (5nitro-phen), neocuproine (neo) and bathophenanthroline (batho). Compounds were characterized in solid state using FT-IR, TGA, DSC and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses by which five new crystal structures were determined. Common features of the coordination scheme include fac-NO + O isomerism of the iminodiacetate (ida) ligand, except for the complex with neo where the ida presents mer-NO2 isomerism. The diimine ligand completes the equatorial plane for the facial isomers, with different degrees of distortion in the octahedral or square-based pyramid geometry depending on the diimine ligand, whereas the neo is perpendicular to the equatorial plane in the latter. Studies in solution, using EPR, UV–Vis spectroscopy and conductimetry, showed that the copper coordination observed in solid state is retained except for the batho complex. DNA interaction studies evidenced that the complexes bind to this biomolecule, inducing different conformational changes. Biological experiments evidenced that all complexes induce cell death in the cell line MDA-MD-231 (metastasic breast cancer line). [Cu(ida)(neo)] and [Cu(ida)(batho)] presented the highest activity. Taken all these data together we propose that [Cu(ida)(neo)] and [Cu(ida)(batho)] are good candidates for further studies in vitro and in vivo.]]></dcterms:abstract>
