    <dcterms:title><![CDATA[<strong>Glycoalkaloids of Wild and Cultivated Solanum : Effects on Specialist and Generalist Insect Herbivores</strong>]]></dcterms:title>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Plant domestication by selective breeding may reduce plant chemical defense in favor of growth. However, few studies have simultaneously studied the defensive chemistry of cultivated plants and their wild congeners in connection to herbivore susceptibility. We compared the constitutive glycoalkaloids (GAs) of cultivated potato, Solanum tuberosum, and a wild congener, S. commersonii, by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. We also determined the major herbivores present on the two species in field plots, and tested their preference for the plants and their isolated GAs in two-choice bioassays. Solanum commersonii had a different GA profile and higher concentrations than S. tuberosum. In the field, S. tuberosum was mostly attacked by the generalist aphids Myzus persicae and Macrosiphum euphorbiae, and by the specialist flea beetle Epitrix argentinensis. In contrast, the most common herbivore on S. commersonii was the specialist sawfly Tequus sp. Defoliation levels were higher on the wild species, probably due to the chewing feeding behavior of Tequus sp. As seen in the field, M. persicae and E. argentinensis preferred leaf disks of the cultivated plant, while Tequus sp. preferred those of the wild one. Congruently, GAs from S. commersonii were avoided by M. persicae and preferred by Tequus sp. The potato aphid performed well on both species and was not deterred by S. commersonii GAs. These observations suggest that different GA profiles explain the feeding preferences of the different herbivores, and that domestication has altered the defensive capacity of S. tuberosum. However, the wild relative is still subject to severe defoliation by a specialist herbivore that may cue on the GAs.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Crocidosema aporema (Walsingham) is a major pest of legumes in the southern cone of Latin America. The mating behaviour of two allopatric populations (Uruguay and Brazil) of C. aporema kept in captivity was studied by observing the posture of calling females, the temporal pattern of pheromone emission and mating, and the response of males to calling females in olfactometer tests. Female calling and mating was observed during the scotophase, from the first to the seventh night after adult emergence. Male response was evaluated at night using a single calling female in a Y-shaped olfactometer. Females adopted a characteristic calling posture, extruding the pheromone gland from the tip of the abdomen. Most females started calling during the second scotophase, and all females called from the third, between the fifth and seventh hours after the onset of the scotophase. Most of the couples mated once throughout the experiment, between the third and sixth night and during the middle of the dark phase. Males preferentially chose the female arm in olfactometer tests, considering both the first arm chosen and the number of visits during the observation period. Our results describe for the fi rst time the temporal pattern associated to the reproductive behaviour of C. aporema. We also provide evidence that this tortricid is monoandrous, and that pheromones are used in intersexual communication for mate finding. Our data will be used to optimize the collection of female sex pheromones for chemical characterization in order to develop a monitoring tool for this pest.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi parasite, was described thousands of years ago. Currently, it affects millions of people, mostly in Latin America, and there are not suitable drugs for treating it. As an attempt to find appropriate drugs to deal with this problem, we report here on the design, synthesis, and characterization of 82 new compounds. Trypanosomicidal behavior in vitro showed more than 20 outstanding derivatives with anti-Trypanosoma cruzi activity. Furthermore, we studied the nonspecific toxicity against mammalian cells determining their selectivity and also performed mutagenicity studies. Proof of concept, in vivo studies, was conducted with two of the most promising derivatives (77 and 80). They were identified as candidates because they have (i) very simple and cost-effective syntheses; (ii) activity against different stages and strains of the parasite showing excellent in vivo behavior during the acute phase of Chagas disease; and (iii) neither nonspecific toxicity nor mutagenic activity.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Lonar Lake is a unique saline and alkaline ecosystem formed by meteor impact in the Deccan basalts in India around 52,000 years ago. To investigate the role of methylotrophy in the cycling of carbon in this unusual environment, stable-isotope probing (SIP) was carried out using the one-carbon compounds methane, methanol and methylamine. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis fingerprinting analyses performed with heavy (13)C-labelled DNA retrieved from sediment microcosms confirmed the enrichment and labelling of active methylotrophic communities. Clone libraries were constructed using PCR primers targeting 16S rRNA genes and functional genes. Methylomicrobium, Methylophaga and Bacillus spp. were identified as the predominant active methylotrophs in methane, methanol and methylamine SIP microcosms, respectively. Absence of mauA gene amplification in the methylamine SIP heavy fraction also indicated that methylamine metabolism in Lonar Lake sediments may not be mediated by the methylamine dehydrogenase enzyme pathway. Many gene sequences retrieved in this study were not affiliated with extant methanotrophs or methylotrophs. These sequences may represent hitherto uncharacterized novel methylotrophs or heterotrophic organisms that may have been cross-feeding on methylotrophic metabolites or biomass.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[La diabetes mellitus est&aacute; asociada a disturbios en la hemostasis que pueden contribuir al desarrollo de enfermedad vascular diab&eacute;tica. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar la coagulaci&oacute;n en una poblaci&oacute;n diab&eacute;tica de Uruguay y compararla con una poblaci&oacute;n de referencia normal. Se trabaj&oacute; con 100 pacientes diab&eacute;ticos tipo 2, de ambos sexos (49 mujeres y 51 hombres), con edades comprendidas entre 42 y 79 a&ntilde;os, y una poblaci&oacute;n control representada por 130 individuos aparentemente sanos (73 mujeres y 57 hombres) cuyas edades oscilaron entre 37 y 78 a&ntilde;os, los que fueron tomados como referencia. Se realizaron las determinaciones de tiempo de protrombina (TP), fibrin&oacute;geno (Fib), prote&iacute;na C (PC), prote&iacute;na S (PS), antitrombina III (ATIII) e inhibidor del activador de plasmin&oacute;geno (PAI) en plasma citratado. El TP y el Fib se realizaron por nefelometr&iacute;a, la PC, ATIII y PAI se midieron cromog&eacute;nicamente y la PS se determin&oacute; por coagulometr&iacute;a. Se encontr&oacute; que los inhibidores fisiol&oacute;gicos de la coagulaci&oacute;n PS y ATIII son significativamente menores en la poblaci&oacute;n diab&eacute;tica, en tanto que los factores procoagulantes Fib y PAI son significativamente mayores, comparados con la poblaci&oacute;n de referencia. De los hallazgos precedentes se confirma una tendencia a un disbalance hemost&aacute;tico que contribuir&iacute;a al estado protromb&oacute;tico que acompa&ntilde;a a un alto porcentaje de la poblaci&oacute;n diab&eacute;tica]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The effectiveness of a commercial inoculum for degrading a dairy wastewater with high fat content was evaluated, and compared with an activated sludge inoculum from a dairy wastewater treatment pond. Both inocula reached similar chemical oxygen demand removal in batch experiments. The population dynamics was also studied by determining heterotrophic counts. Predominant microorganisms were differentiated by colony morphology and genomic fingerprinting (BOX-PCR) analysis. The higher population diversity and the wider range of CO2 production rate observed in batch reactors inoculated with activated-sludge, indicated that microorganisms from this inoculum were well adapted and may have had synergic activity for the degradation of the dairy effluent. When the bioreactor was operated with the commercial inoculum in continuous mode, according to its microbial growth kinetics, other microorganisms became predominant. These results showed that inoculated microorganisms did not persist in the open system and periodic addition of microorganisms may be needed to achieve a high performance treatment.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[CONTEXT: Triosephosphate isomerase (TIM) is a ubiquitous enzyme that has been targeted for the discovery of new small molecular weight compounds used against Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. We have identified phenazine and 1,2,6-thiadiazine chemotypes as novel inhibitors of TIM from T. cruzi (TcTIM). OBJECTIVE: Study the mechanism of TcTIM inhibition by a phenazine derivative and by a 1,2,6-thiadiazine derivative. METHODS: We performed biochemical and theoretical molecular docking studies to characterize the interaction of the derivatives with wild-type and mutant TcTIM. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: At low micromolar concentrations, the compounds induce highly selective irreversible inactivation of parasitic TIM. The molecular docking simulations indicate that the phenazine derivative likely interferes with the association of the two monomers of the dimeric enzyme by locating at the dimer interface, while 1,2,6-thiadiazine could act as an inhibitor binding to a region surrounding Cys-118.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[As a part of our studies of copper(II) complexes with possible antitumor activity, the synthesis and structural characterization of two new copper terpyridine (terpy) complexes: [Cu(terpy)(SO4)(H2O)]&middot;2H2O and [Cu2(terpy)2(SO4)2]&middot;4H2O are presented. The crystal structures show that the copper ion in both complexes is in a square pyramidal environment, coordinated equatorially to the terpy N atoms and completing the coordination with O atoms from the sulfate or water molecules. The second compound is a sulfate bridged dinuclear complex. In aqueous solution the coordination scheme is modified. Taking the crystal structure as a starting point the geometries of the complexes were optimized and vibrational spectroscopy calculations were performed allowing an assignation of the experimental IR spectra. Finally, the interaction of the complexes with DNA was studied, by UV titration and docking studies of the complexes.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Two fatty acid binding proteins, MvFABPa and MvFABPb were identified in the parasite Mesocestoides vogae (Platyhelmithes, Cestoda). Fatty acid binding proteins are small intracellular proteins whose members exhibit great diversity. Proteins of this family have been identified in many organisms, of which Platyhelminthes are among the most primitive. These proteins have particular relevance in flatworms since de novo synthesis of fatty acids is absent. Fatty acids should be captured from the media needing an efficient transport system to uptake and distribute these molecules. While HLBPs could be involved in the shuttle of fatty acids to the surrounding host tissues and convey them into the parasite, FABPs could be responsible for the intracellular trafficking. In an effort to understand the role of MvFABPs in fatty acid transport of M. vogae larvae, we analysed the intracellular localization of both MvFABPs and the co-localization with in vivo uptake of fatty acid analogue BODIPY FL C16. Immunohistochemical studies on larvae sections using specific antibodies, showed a diffuse cytoplasmic distribution of each protein with some expression in nuclei and mitochondria. MvFABPs distribution was confirmed by mass spectrometry identification from 2D-electrophoresis of larvae subcellular fractions. This work is the first report showing intracellular distribution of MvFABPs as well as the co-localization of these proteins with the BODIPY FL C16 incorporated from the media. Our results suggest that fatty acid binding proteins could target fatty acids to cellular compartments including nuclei. In this sense, M. vogae FABPs could participate in several cellular processes fulfilling most of the functions attributed to vertebrate&rsquo;s counterparts.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Communication of health benefits to the public is an essential element for the development and marketing of functional foods. In this context, the aim of the present work was to study the influence of different types of fibre enrichment declarations on consumers&rsquo; perception of functional chocolate milk desserts. A rating-based conjoint analysis with 135 consumers was carried out. Milk dessert concepts were designed using a full factorial design with two categorical factors: name of the ingredient (three levels: declared using a common name &ndash;fibre- or a specific source of fibre &ndash;wheat bran and resistant starch-), and claim (three levels: &lsquo;no claim&rsquo;, &lsquo;enhanced function&rsquo; claim or &lsquo;reduced disease risk&rsquo; claim). Consumers were asked to rate the familiarity, perceived healthiness, expected liking and willingness to purchase each of the desserts, and had to complete a questionnaire related to their attitudes towards health and nutrition. Two consumer groups with different attitude towards health and nutritional issues were identified; which significantly differed in their perception of the functional chocolate milk desserts. Participants more interested in health significantly increased their willingness to purchase when fibre-enriched desserts were considered; whereas participants less interested in health showed the opposite behaviour. Moreover, the higher willingness to purchase scores were found when the addition of fibre was declared using its common name and when health claims were included.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Taking into account the impact of texture on consumers&rsquo; liking of milk desserts, it is important for dairy companies to understand how consumers describe it. In this context, the aim of the present study was to identify consumers&rsquo; texture vocabulary of milk desserts using free listing and a check-all-that-apply question. A free listing task was carried out with 66 consumers, who were asked to list all the positive and negative texture characteristics of milk desserts. Moreover, 65 consumers tried 8 commercial milk dessert samples and answer a check-all-that-apply question with 27 texture terms. Both methodologies enabled the identification of the texture characteristics more relevant for consumers and the texture vocabulary they usually use to describe this type of product. Creaminess and smoothness were the most relevant characteristics, followed by attributes related to thickness. Some similarities and differences were identified between the results of both methodologies.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Check-all-that-apply (CATA) questions could be a simple alternative to get an insight on consumer perception of a food product. In the present work, CATA questions were used in the development of chocolate milk desserts. Nine chocolate milk desserts were formulated with different sugar and cacao concentration. A consumer study was performed with 70 people, who were asked to score their overall liking and to answer a CATA question that included 18 sensory and hedonic terms. Besides, the samples were evaluated by a trained assessors' panel. Highly significant differences were found in the frequencies in which CATA terms were used for describing the nine desserts, suggesting that this methodology was able to detect differences in consumer perception of the desserts. Sample configuration from consumers' CATA counts and trained assessors data were similar, suggesting a good agreement between both evaluations.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Food packaging plays a major role in attracting consumer attention and generating sensory and hedonic expectations; which could affect their product perception and purchase decisions. In the present study word association and conjoint analysis were used to study the influence of package shape and colour on consumer expectations of milk desserts. Six images of milk dessert packages with different colour and shape were presented to 105 consumers, who were asked to complete a word association task and to score their expected liking and willingness to purchase the desserts. Both package shape and colour affected consumers expected liking scores and their sensory expectations regarding the desserts. Consumers associations were mainly related to sensory characteristics. Both methodologies provided an interesting insight on the consumer&rsquo;s expectations generated by the packages and could be useful in order to design packages which create appropriate expectations regarding the product.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Consumers have a limited capacity to process all the information they face when deciding their food choices and usually rely on effortless and intuitive thoughts. According to the cognitive-experiential self theory human behavior is determined by the interaction of the two information processing systems: rational and intuitive. Consumers differ in their preference for these two thinking styles, which leads to differences in how they make their decisions. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the influence of rational and intuitive thinking styles on consumer choices and information processing when evaluating yogurt labels. Seventy-one consumers completed a choice-conjoint task with yogurt labels. Three 2-level variables were considered: fat and sugar content (low vs. high), label background (Background A vs. Background B), and traffic light system (present vs. absent). Consumers were presented with 8 choice sets composed of two labels on a computer screen, and were asked to indicate which one they would consume. Their eye movements were recorded during the task using an eye-tracker. After completing the conjoint task, consumers completed the Rational Experiential Inventory (REI). Latent class cluster analysis identified two consumer segments with different preference for analytic-rational or intuitive-experiential thinking styles. Consumers who predominantly relied on analytical-rational thinking engaged on a greater information search and a more thoughtful analysis of nutritional information for making their choices than consumers who preferred intuitive-experiential thinking. Besides, thinking style had a strong influence on the part-worth utilities of the evaluated variables. Results from the present work provide preliminary evidence about the influence of thinking style on consumer food choices, which can have potential implications for the design of communication strategies aimed at changing dietary patterns.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Identifying the package and label features that are most relevant for consumer might provide useful information for designing a food package that closely matches consumer needs and expectations. In the present work two groups of 100 milk dessert consumers were asked to elicit package and label features of milk desserts using word association and free listing. Both methodologies were useful, efficient and quick methods to determine package and label features most likely to influence consumer perception of milk desserts. Although some differences were found between them, results related to the design of milk dessert packages were similar and suggested that brand, package shape, colour, and the design of the label might be the most relevant features that should be taken into account during package design of this food product. Cluster analysis of participants enabled the identification of groups of consumers that might be driven by different package features when making their purchase decisions of milk desserts.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[One of the most important steps of new product development process is product optimization, which aims at identifying consumers&rsquo; ideal products and directions for product reformulation. The present work proposes the application of a penalty analysis based on consumer responses to CATA questions to identify drivers of liking and directions for product reformulation. Two studies were conducted in which 74 and 119 consumers evaluated a set of samples (5 apples and 8 yogurts) using a check-all-that-apply question related to sensory characteristics and were also asked to check all the terms they considered appropriate to describe their ideal product. Data were analyzed by counting the number of consumers who did not check an attribute as they did for their ideal product, and its associated mean drop. A dummy variable transformation approach was proposed to make linear regression models between CATA terms and overall liking scores using Partial Least Squares (PLS). Juiciness, sweetness, apple flavor, firmness and crispiness were the most relevant attributes for consumers in the apple study. Meanwhile, in the yogurt study smoothness, homogeneity and creaminess were the main drivers of liking and were responsible for the highest penalization on overall liking (more than 1 in the 9-point hedonic scale). PLS regression enabled the identification of the attributes which deviation from the ideal caused a significant decrease in overall liking. Penalty analysis on CATA questions proved to be a simple and useful approach to identify drivers of liking and directions for improving the products in both studies.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In the present study the use of an open-ended question to identify drivers of liking of milk desserts was evaluated. Eight samples of vanilla milk desserts were presented to 80 consumers, who were asked to score their overall liking using a 9-point hedonic scale and to provide up to four words to describe each of the samples. Also, the samples were evaluated by a panel of trained assessors. Consumers&rsquo; descriptions of the samples were mainly related to hedonic and sensory characteristics of the milk desserts. The elicited terms provided information about which are the attributes that drive consumers&rsquo; preferences using their own language. Multiple factor analysis was used to obtain a synthetic map of the samples based on consumers&rsquo; descriptions, sensory data and overall liking scores. This methodology could be an interesting technique to select the most relevant attributes for consumers and to study the relationship between sensory data and consumers descriptions.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[<p>As the use of check-all-that-apply (CATA) questions for consumers to aid sensory product characterization<br />gains popularity the need for developing guidelines regarding best practice increases. An important<br />issue in the design of studies including CATA questions is the number of consumers that are necessary to<br />obtain stable results. In this context, the aim of the present work was to study the stability of sample and<br />descriptor configurations obtained using CATA questions with consumers, by means of a bootstrapping<br />resampling approach. Data from 13 consumer studies were analyzed, differing in number of consumers,<br />product category, number of samples, degree of difference among samples and number and type of<br />descriptors in the CATA question. For each study, 1000 random subsets of different number of consumers<br />were generated from the original data set. For each consumer virtual panel, sample and descriptor configurations<br />were obtained using Correspondence Analysis and the concordance between them and the<br />reference configurations (obtained with all the consumers) were computed using the regression vector<br />(RV) coefficient. The RV coefficients of sample and descriptor configurations increased with the number<br />of consumers, suggesting an increase in the stability of the configurations. Results showed that the number<br />of consumers necessary to yield fully stable configurations depended on the degree of difference<br />among samples, the complexity of the sensory space and the type of descriptors included in the CATA<br />question. Across the 13 data sets analysed, results suggested that when working with widely different<br />samples, 60&ndash;80 consumers can be regarded as a reasonable compromise to get stable sample and descriptor<br />configurations. However, it is recommended to check, a posteriori, the stability of sample and descriptor<br />configurations using a stability index based on bootstrapping.</p>]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The use by consumers of simplifying response strategies when answering check-all-that-apply (CATA) questions for sensory characterization cannot be eliminated. However, ways to motivate consumers to cognitively engage more in the processing of CATA questions and provide their full attention to the task may be welcome. In this context, the aim of the present work was to evaluate patterns of visual attention to CATA questions by consumers and use the insights gained to advance knowledge about CATA question design. A consumer study was carried out in which participants were asked to evaluate two product sets with five samples each (potato chips or plain crackers) and to answer a check-all-that-apply question composed of 20 sensory terms, which was presented on a computer screen. Half of the consumers received the CATA question with the terms in a fixed order, whereas for the other half of participants the order of terms was different for each sample (i.e., simulating within participants balancing of term presentation order). While consumers completed the CATA tasks their eye movements were recorded using a remote eye-tracker. Results showed that the first time that consumers read the CATA question (i.e., for sample 1), they processed the terms from left to right and from top to bottom. In general, they considered the whole list of terms and then selected those that applied to the sample. As the task progressed consumers changed how they answered the CATA question, making fewer and shorter eye fixations to complete the task. Presenting the terms in different order for each sample significantly increased the total number and duration of fixations, which indicates higher cognitive effort. Implications for the design of CATA questions and suggestions for further research are discussed.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[To better understanding the consumer choice of functional foods, a choice-based conjoint study was carried out to investigate the influence of three non-sensory factors on consumer choice of functional yogurts over regular ones. Four attributes were considered in the conjoint study: type of yogurt (regular, enriched with antioxidants and enriched with fibre), brand (national familiar, national unfamiliar, and foreign familiar), price (low, regular and high) and claim (with and without &lsquo;reduced disease risk&rsquo; health claim). Eighteen choice sets, each composed of three stimuli (regular yogurt, enriched with antioxidants and enriched with fibre and varying the brand, price and claim levels) were evaluated by 103 consumers. For each choice set, consumers had to indicate which yogurt would normally buy. A questionnaire on consumer attitude towards health and nutrition was answered by participants after the choice task. Brand, price and health claims highly significantly affected consumer choice of functional yogurts. The relative importance of brand was similar to that of type of yogurt. Therefore, results suggested that non-sensory factors such as brand and price could have an important impact on consumer perception of functional foods. The impact of brand, price and health claims was affected by consumer interest in health issues.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Eight chocolate milk desserts with different formulation were evaluated by two groups of consumers. Fifty consumers evaluated the samples and indicated their overall liking and answered a CATA question. Meanwhile, 40 consumers elicited up to four words to describe the desserts and completed a projective mapping task. Projective mapping and the check-all-that-apply question provided very similar sensory profiles for the evaluated milk desserts. Differences in the sensory characteristics of the samples were explained by differences in their formulations, which suggest the validity of the sensory profiles given by consumers. Projective mapping and the CATA question consisted on valuable tools to understand their perception of the sensory and hedonic characteristics of the desserts. These methodologies could consist on useful and interesting complimentary techniques to trained assessors&rsquo; data, being CATA question easier to understand and less time consuming for consumers.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[&ldquo;Antifungal effect of Schinus molle L., Anacardiaceae, and Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi, Anacardiaceae, essential oils of Rio Grande do Sul&rdquo;. One of the alternatives to reduce the use of pesticides may be the use of essential oils to control diseases and pests that affect agricultural production. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fungicide effect of essential oils of Schinus molle L. and Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi, native species widely distributed in the region. The oils were extracted by hydro distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography. The phytopathogenic fungi Alternaria spp., Botrytis spp., Colletotrichum spp. and Fusarium spp., were isolated from &ldquo;gerberas&rdquo; and roses with symptoms of disease and antifungal activity of the tests were carried out by the technique of spreading disk. The data was analyzed by Tukey and Duncan tests to 5%. In general, the essential oil of S. molle was effective for the four fungi tested, for the four dilutions used and for all the times evaluated. The essential oil of S. terebinthifolius presents more pronounced fungicide effect against Botrytis spp., from in vitro tests.]]></dcterms:abstract>
