    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Haemonchus contortus is one of the most important parasite nematodes of small ruminants around the world and causes great economic losses in livestock production. Control of gastrointestinal nematode infections, like haemonchosis, relies mainly on anthelmintic drugs, but its excessive and inappropriate use has caused serious drug resistance issues in many countries, including Uruguay, where sheep production occupies an important place in the country's economy. Benzimidazole (BZ) anthelmintics have been used for decades to treat sheep against H. contortus infection and resistance to this anthelmintic group has been widely described. Molecularly, BZ resistance in H. contortus has been correlated with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the &beta;-tubulin isotype 1 gene at codon 200 and 167 (both TTC to TAC, F167Y and F200Y) and at codon 198 (GAA to GCA, E198A).The aim of this work was to explore the presence of these tubulin SNPs in H. contortus adult worms recovered from sheep abomasa from a slaughterhouse in Uruguay. The mean resistant allelic frequencies at positions F167Y and F200Y were 20.25 and 47.45%, respectively, for worms recovered from naturally infected sheep slaughtered in 2013, while those that were slaughtered in 2014 presented only F200Y SNP with a frequency of 86.89%. Also H. contortus Kirby adult worms (anthelmintic- susceptible McMaster isolate), recovered from artificially infected sheep, were analyzed as reference for comparative purposes This analysis showed susceptible genotype at 167 and 198 position, and a low level of the resistance allele at the 200 position (3.66%). This is the first study for the presence of SNPs in the isotype-1 &beta;-tubulin gene of H. contortus populations in Uruguay, which is consistent with the previous epidemiological studies carried out through the method of fecal egg count reduction test (FECRT), thus confirming the serious resistance levels to BZ anthelmintics also in this country.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A study of the influence of the use of images in a conjoint analysis combined with check-all-that apply (CATA) questions on jams was carried out. The relative importance of flavor and the information presented in the label in the willingness to purchase and the perception of how healthy the product is has been evaluated. Sixty consumers evaluated the stimuli presented only in text format (session 1), and another group of 60 consumers did so by receiving the stimuli in text format along with an image of the product (session 2). In addition, for each stimulus, consumers answered a CATA question consisting of 20 terms related to their involvement with the product. The perception of healthy increased when the texts were accompanied with images and also increased when the text included information. Willingness to purchase was only influenced by the flavor of the jams. The presence of images did not influence the CATA question's choice of terms, which were influenced by the information presented in the text. The use of a check-all-that-apply question in concepts provided an interesting possibility when they were combined with the results from the conjoint analysis, improving the comprehension of consumers' perception. Using CATA questions as an alternative way of evaluating consumer involvement seems to be beneficial and should be evaluated much further.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Rapanea ferruginea antioxidant and antitumoral properties were not explored before in literature. This study aimed to investigate these biological activities for the R. ferruginea leaf extract and correlate them with its phenolic content and influence in biological membrane dynamics. Thus, in this study, anti/pro-oxidative properties of R. ferruginea leaf extract by in vitro DPPH and TBARS assays, with respect to the free radical reducing potential and to its activity regarding membrane free radical-induced peroxidation, respectively. Furthermore, preliminary tests related to the extract effect on in vitro glioma cell viability were also performed. In parallel, the phenolic content was detected by HPLC-DAD and included syringic and trans-cinnamic acids, quercetrin, catechin, quercetin, and gallic acid. In an attempt to correlate the biological activity of R. ferruginea extract and its effect on membrane dynamics, the molecular interaction between the extract and a liposomal model with natural-sourced phospholipids was investigated. Location and changes in vibrational, rotational, and translational lipid motions, as well as in the phase state of liposomes, induced by R. ferruginea extract, were monitored by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, differential scanning calorimetry, and UV-visible spectroscopy. In its free form, the extract showed promising in vitro antioxidant properties. Free-form extract (at 1000&micro; g/mL) exposure reduced glioma cell in vitro viability in 40%, as evidenced by MTT tests. Pro-oxidant behavior was observed when the extract was loaded into liposomes. A 70.8% cell viability reduction was achieved with 500 &micro;g/mL of liposome-loaded extract. The compounds of R. ferruginea extract ordered liposome interface and disorder edits a polar region. Phenolic content, as well as membrane interaction and modulation may have an important role in the oxidative and antitumoral activities of the R. ferruginea leaf extract.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Los basidiomicetos son un grupo de importancia entre los hongos, pues tienen esencial participaci&oacute;n en la naturaleza por la versatilidad de las especies que lo constituyen; unas forman ectomicorrizas, otras son causantes de enfermedades como las royas y los carbones, y se encuentran tambi&eacute;n las especies comestibles que se cultivan con fines nutritivos. Pertenecen tambi&eacute;n a este grupo especies con importancia en la medicina por presentar metabolitos con actividad biol&oacute;gica contra una amplia gama de patolog&iacute;as cl&iacute;nicas, incluso influyen positivamente en la profilaxis y el tratamiento del sida. Dentro de este grupo se encuentran, adem&aacute;s, los hongos de la podredumbre blanca, &uacute;nicos microorganismos que son capaces de degradar eficientemente compuestos arom&aacute;ticos y heterog&eacute;neos porque presentan un complejo enzim&aacute;tico inespec&iacute;fico con actividad oxidativa contra una amplia variedad de sustancias t&oacute;xicas y recalcitrantes que les permite aplicaciones como biorremediadores de suelos y aguas contaminadas en las industrias textil y papelera, y tienen tambi&eacute;n marcada importancia en la agricultura, pues adem&aacute;s pueden presentar actividad antif&uacute;ngica, fitot&oacute;xica y nematicida, capacidades &uacute;tiles para el manejo de plagas. Por tales motivos, en las &uacute;ltimas d&eacute;cadas han aumentado las investigaciones con el objetivo de potenciar o incrementar la actividad enzim&aacute;tica de estos hongos deslignificadores. El objetivo de este trabajo es reunir resultados recientes de la aplicaci&oacute;n de los basidiomicetos para la agricultura que orienten pautas o programas de desarrollo con vistas a su posterior introducci&oacute;n dentro del modelo agr&iacute;cola alternativo, que actualmente se implementa en Cuba, con el desarrollo y aplicaci&oacute;n de t&eacute;cnicas de manejo de plagas basadas en la reducci&oacute;n o eliminaci&oacute;n del uso de los plaguicidas sint&eacute;ticos.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Los iones met&aacute;licos juegan un papel importante en organismos vivos debido a que participan de numerosos procesos biol&oacute;gicos. Por ejemplo, el ion ferroso en la hemoglobina es fundamental para el transporte de ox&iacute;geno, los iones calcio son un componente vital de los huesos y otros elementos de transici&oacute;n son esenciales para el funcionamiento de enzimas [1]. La Qu&iacute;mica Bioinorg&aacute;nica es el &aacute;rea de la Qu&iacute;mica que estudia la funci&oacute;n de los iones met&aacute;licos en sistemas biol&oacute;gicos, incluyendo el estudio de fen&oacute;menos naturales como el comportamiento de metaloprote&iacute;nas, o fen&oacute;menos artificiales relacionados con la importancia de &eacute;stos en medicina y toxicolog&iacute;a [2]. De este &uacute;ltimo punto emerge un &aacute;rea denominada Qu&iacute;mica Inorg&aacute;nica Medicinal que est&aacute; relacionada, entre otros aspectos, con el estudio y desarrollo de complejos met&aacute;licos con actividad terap&eacute;utica o de diagn&oacute;stico]]></dcterms:abstract>
