<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The structure, stability, electronic properties and chemical reactivity of X/B/N triple‐doped graphene (TDG) systems (X=Al, Si, P, S) are investigated by means of periodic density functional calculations. In the studied TDGs the dopant atoms prefer to be bonded to one another instead of separated. In general, the XNB pattern is preferred, with the exception of sulfur, which favors the SBN motif. The introduction of a third dopant results in a negligible decrease of the cohesive energies with respect to the dual‐doped graphene (DDG) counterparts. Thus, it is expect that these systems can be prepared soon. For SiNB TDG, the introduction of the B dopant reduces the gap opening at the K point and restores the Dirac cones that are destroyed in SiN DDG. On the contrary, for PNB TDG, the bandgap is increased with respect to PN DDG, probably because the introduction of B weakens the PN bonding, and thus the electronic structure is rather similar to that of P‐doped graphene. Finally, with regard to the reactivity of the TDGs, for AlNB, PNB, and SNB the carbon atoms are more reactive than in their AlN, PN, and SN DDG counterparts. On the contrary, the reactivity of SiNB is lower than that of SiN DDG. Therefore, to increase the reactivity of graphene, Al, P, and S should be combined with BN motifs]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the lithium (Li) adsorption upon beryllium (Be) doped graphene. Be acts as hole doping in graphene leaving the structure as electron deficient, offering a greater tendency for Li adsorption than in pristine and boron (B) doped graphene. The introduction of Be augments the adsorption energy of Li from −1.11 to −2.53 eV/Li. Furthermore, 12, and 16 Li ions can easily be captured by one Be center in the single and double vacancy case, respectively, with the adsorption energies of −1.33 eV/Li (for both the cases), showing that Be doped graphene is an excellent anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Consequently, the presence of structural defects, in particular, a divacancy is found to be more efficient in terms of Li storage capacity. A huge Li storage capacity (2303.295 mAh/g) is calculated for Li8BeC7 having reasonable adsorption energy (−1.47 eV/Li). Our calculated capacity is 6.19 times greater than that of the graphite.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The use of ketohexose isomerases is a powerful tool in lactose whey processing, but these enzymes can be very sensitive and expensive. Development of immobilized/stabilized biocatalysts could be a further option to improve the process. In this work, β-galactosidase from Bacillus circulans, l-arabinose (d-galactose) isomerase from Enterococcus faecium, and d-xylose (d-glucose) isomerase from Streptomyces rubiginosus were immobilized individually onto Eupergit C and Eupergit C 250 L. Immobilized activity yields were over 90% in all cases. With the purpose of increasing thermostability of derivatives, two post-immobilization treatments were performed: alkaline incubation to favor the formation of additional covalent linkages, and blocking of excess oxirane groups by reacting with glycine. The greatest thermostability was achieved when alkaline incubation was carried out for 24 h, producing l-arabinose isomerase-Eupergit C derivatives with a half-life of 379 h and d-xylose isomerase-Eupergit C derivatives with a half-life of 554 h at 50 °C. Preliminary assays using immobilized and stabilized biocatalysts sequentially to biotransform lactose at pH 7.0 and 50 °C demonstrated improved performances as compared with soluble enzymes. Further improvements in ketohexose productivities were achieved when the three single-immobilizates were incubated simultaneously with lactose in a mono-reactor system.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Synthetic efforts have been continuously reported since 1985. In this work, multistep total syntheses of natural gabosine H and non-natural gabosines have been accomplished by using a chemoenzymatic approach. Chirality was transferred from the starting material 3-methyl-cis-1,2-cyclohexadienediol, which was obtained by biotransformation of toluene. Protection of the diol followed by iodohydroxylation or dihydroxylation of the less hindered double bond and further functional group transformations, permitted us to build up the synthetic sequences to the final products. The chemical structures and the absolute configurations of two key intermediates and two final products were confirmed by X-ray diffraction.]]></dcterms:abstract>

In general, the boric acid/borax mixture combination was more effective against Anobium larvae than the other treatments. Less boron was released by specimens containing zinc borate and colemanite than by those containing ulexite or the boric acid/borax mixture. In general, water absorption and thickness swell were similar among the different treatments, but both were slightly higher in the ulexite-incorporated specimens. Using ethinylestradiol as starting material, an estradiol derivative bearing a 1,4‐disubstituted 1,2,3‐triazole–containing tridentate ligand system was synthesized by “Click Chemistry” and fully characterized. Labelling with high yield and radiochemical purity was achieved through the formation of a 99mTc‐tricarbonyl complex. The radiolabelled compound was stable, exhibited moderate binding to plasma protein (approximately 33%) and lipophilicity in the adequate range (logP 1.3 ± 0.1 at pH 7.4). Studies in MCF7 showed promising uptake values (approximately 2%). However, more than 50% of the activity is quickly released from the cell. Biodistribution experiments in normal rats confirmed the expected “in vivo” stability of the radiotracer but showed very high gastrointestinal and liver activity, which is inconvenient for in vivo applications. Taking into consideration the well‐documented influence of the chelating system in the physicochemical and biological behaviour of technetium‐labelled small biomolecules, research will be continued using the same pharmacophore but different complexation modalities of technetium.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Background: Lactam cyclized alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) analogues exhibit high stability and affinity for the MC1-R receptors over expressed in melanoma cells. Recently, we reported a novel 99mTc-HYNIC-cycMSH4-13 analogue with the HYNIC chelator directly attached to the lactam cyclized ring. Objective: In this study we proposed the introduction of a 6-aminohexanoic acid (Ahx) linker between the HYNIC chelator and lactam cyclized peptide cycMSH4-13 to reduce steric hindrance and improve the melanoma targeting and imaging proprieties of the radiolabeled peptide. Method: HYNIC-Ahx-cycMSH4-13 peptide was synthesized on an automated peptide synthesizer and displayed an IC50 of 0.3 nM using B16/F1 cells. The 99mTc/tricine radiolabeled peptide was examined for radiochemical purity, stability and cell binding. In vivo, biodistribution and planar gamma imaging studies were performed in B16/F1 melanoma tumor bearing C57BK mice. Results: 99mTc-HYNIC-Ahx-cycMSH4-13 was obtained with a radiochemical purity >95%, was stable up to 24 h at room temperature and exhibited high binding and rapid internalization in B16/F1 cells. In vivo biodistribution studies showed a tumor uptake of 4.92 ± 0.92 % ID/g and 2.78 ± 1.48 % ID/g at 2 h and 4 h post injection, respectively. Whole-body clearance was rapid through urinary excretion. The melanoma tumors were clearly visualized by planar gamma imaging. Conclusion: 99mTc-HYNIC-Ahx-cycMSH4-13 was shown radiochemically stability and exhibited rapid and selective uptake in melanoma cells and tumors. Imaging studies yielded promising preclinical results, warranting further evaluation of 99mTc-HYNIC-cycMSH analogs as melanoma specific imaging agent]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[In this work the thermal behavior of wood impregnated with ZnCl2 is studied. Impregnation of wood with ZnCl2 is a treatment used in activated carbon production, and liquefaction and fast pyrolysis of biomass. Frequently, the impregnated wood is dried for several hours at temperatures above 370 K and then it is carbonized. Catalytic pyrolysis occurs, giving rise to a complex set of reactions. A TG/DTA study was done on the raw material, the activated carbon, the pure ZnCl2 and the intermediate products in order to study the mass and thermal changes occurring. Elemental analysis and SEM analysis were also carried out. An exothermic torrefaction develops during the drying step; the torrefied product is carbonized in an endothermic process that involves ZnCl2 volatilization. The washed impregnated wood carbonizes through an exothermic process that may involve the decomposition of cellulose, lignin and the solid product of hemicellulose torrefaction.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[This work aimed to find a rational nutrient feeding strategy for cider vinegar fermentation based on adequate information on the nutritional requirement of acetic acid bacteria. Through single nutrient lack experiment assay, necessary nutrient recipe for Acetobacter pasteurianus CICIM B7003 in acetous fermentation was confirmed. Compounds from the essential nutrient recipe were tested further to find out the key substrates significantly influencing cider vinegar fermentation. The findings showed that aspartate, glutamate, proline and tryptophan should be considered in detail for optimizing nutritional composition of cider. Finally, a nutrient feeding strategy that simultaneously adds proline, glutamate, aspartate and tryptophan to form final concentrations of 0.02 g/L, 0.03 g/L, 0.01 g/L and 0.005 g/L in cider was achieved by orthogonal experiment design. Comparing to the original fermentation, the yield of acetic acid from alcohol reached 93.3% and the concentration of most volatile flavor compounds increased with the rational nutrient feeding strategy.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[A new homology model of human microsomal epoxide hydrolase was derived based on multiple templates. The model obtained was fully evaluated, including MD simulations and ensemble-based docking, showing that the quality of the structure is better than that of only previously known model. Particularly, a catalytic triad was clearly identified, in agreement with the experimental information available. Analysis of intermediates in the enzymatic mechanism led to the identification of key residues for substrate binding, stereoselectivity, and intermediate stabilization during the reaction. In particular, we have confirmed the role of the oxyanion hole and the conserved motif (HGXP) in epoxide hydrolases, in excellent agreement with known experimental and computational data on similar systems. The model obtained is the first one that fully agrees with all the experimental observations on the system.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Bacterial adenosine 5’-diphosphate-ribosylating toxins are encoded by several human pathogens, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa (exotoxin A (ETA)), Corynebacterium diphtheriae (diphtheria toxin (DT)), and Vibrio cholerae (cholix toxin (CT)). The toxins modify eukaryotic elongation factor 2, an essential human enzyme in protein synthesis, thereby causing cell death. Targeting external virulence factors, such as the above toxins, is a promising alternative for developing new antibiotics, while at the same time avoiding drug resistance. This study aims to establish a reliable computational methodology to find a “silver bullet” able to target all three toxins. Herein, we have undertaken a detailed analysis of the active sites of ETA, DT, and CT, followed by the determination of the most appropriate selection of the size of the docking sphere. Thereafter, we tested two different approaches for normalizing the docking scores and used these to verify the best target (toxin) for each ligand. The results indicate that the methodology is suitable for identifying selective as well as multitoxin inhibitors, further validating the robustness of inverse docking for target-fishing experiments.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[To determine the factor structure of the Latin American & Caribbean Household Food Security Scale (ELCSA) and to study the influence of sociodemographic characteristics on each of the identified dimensions in Montevideo, Uruguay. Cross-sectional survey with a representative sample of urban households. Household food insecurity was measured using the ELCSA. The percentage of respondents who gave affirmative responses for each of the items of the ELCSA was determined. Exploratory factor analysis was carried out to determine the ELCSA’s factor structure. A probit model was used to determine the impact of some individual and household sociodemographic characteristics on the identified dimensions of food insecurity. Metropolitan area centred on Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay, April–September 2014. Adults aged between 18 and 93 years (n 742). The percentage of affirmative responses to the items of the ELCSA ranged from 4·4 to 31·7 %. Two factors were identified in the exploratory factor analysis performed on data from households without children under 18 years old, whereas three factors were identified for households with children. The identified factors were associated with different severity levels of food insecurity. Likelihood of experiencing different levels of food insecurity was affected by individual characteristics of the respondent as well as characteristics of the household. The influence of sociodemographic variables varied among the ELCSA dimensions. Household income had the largest influence on all dimensions, which indicates a strong relationship between income and food insecurity.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Selenoprotein T (SELENOT) is an endoplasmatic reticulum (ER)-associated redoxin that contains the amino acid selenocysteine (Sec, U) within a CXXU motif within a thioredoxin-like fold. Its precise function in multicellular organisms is not completely understood although it has been shown in mammals to be involved in Ca2+ homeostasis, antioxidant and neuroendocrine functions. Here, we use the model organism C. elegans to address SELENOT function in a whole organism throughout its life cycle. C. elegans possess two genes encoding SELENOT protein orthologues (SELT-1.1 and SELT-1.2), which lack Sec and contain the CXXC redox motif instead. Our results show that a Sec→Cys replacement and a gene duplication were two major evolutionary events that occurred in the nematode lineage. We find that worm SELT-1.1 localizes to the ER and is expressed in different cell types, including the nervous system. In contrast, SELT-1.2 exclusively localizes in the cytoplasm of the AWB neurons. We find that selt-1.1 and selt-1.2 single mutants as well as the double mutant are viable, but the selt-1.1 mutant is compromised under rotenone-induced oxidative stress. We demonstrate that selt-1.1, but not selt-1.2, is required for avoidance to the bacterial pathogens Serratia marcescens and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Aversion to the noxious signal 2-nonanone is also significantly impaired in selt-1.1, but not in selt-1.2 mutant animals. Our results suggest that selt-1.1 would be a redox transducer required for nociception and optimal organismal fitness. The results highlight C. elegans as a valuable model organism to study SELENOT-dependent processes.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The Pechini sol-gel method has been employed for the synthesis of pure and (181Hf→)181Ta-doped Y2O3 nanopowders. We performed a structural characterization from the micro to the subnanoscopic scale by means of scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and time-differential perturbed γ–γ angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy. The results show the formation of the cubic bixbyite structure after a thermal treatment at 1473 K. For the synthesized 181Ta-doped Y2O3, the PAC experiments demonstrate that the impurities are mainly located at both substitutional cationic sites of the bixbyite structure. The experimental investigation was complemented by performing first-principles electronic structure calculations for Ta atoms localized at the two cationic sites of the Y2O3 semiconductor structure, which allow the study of the structural and electronic modifications induced in the host system when the impurities are introduced. These calculations confirm that the measured electric-field gradients for the synthesized 181Ta-doped Y2O3 correspond to double-ionized impurities located at substitutional defect-free cationic sites of the bixbyite host structure and indicate the site occupancy preference for 181Hf(→181Ta) doping. The behaviour of the site preference of 181Ta impurities with temperature is also discussed. In addition to an extensive structural and electronic characterization of pure and Ta-doped Y2O3 semiconductor, our results demonstrate that the Pechini sol-gel process is an affordable and effective way to successfully synthesize these PAC substitutional doped samples.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Reformulation of industrialized products has been recognized as one of the most effective strategies to reduce sugar intake and improve public health. Information about product reformulation can negatively affect consumer hedonic perception as a negative relationship between tastiness and healthfulness exists. In this context, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of information about sugar reduction and the use of sweeteners on consumer hedonic, sensory and wellbeing perception, using orange/pomegranate as case study. Samples of orange/pomegranate juice with different sweeteners (no added sugar, sugar, sucralose, stevia and monk fruit extract) were evaluated by 196 consumers under blind or informed conditions, following a between-subjects experimental design. Consumers in the informed group were presented the juice samples with their corresponding bottle displayed on a computer screen, including information about sugar content using the traffic-light system, claims on no added sugar and the presence of natural sweeteners. Consumers had to evaluate their overall liking and answer two CATA questions, related to sensory and wellbeing perception. Information increased consumer sensory and hedonic discrimination of the samples, particularly for the juice sweetened with stevia. Information influenced consumer perception of physical health and emotional aspects of wellbeing. Results from the present work suggest that the influence of information about nutritional characteristics of products and reformulation strategies seems to be modulated by the degree of difference between consumers’ sensory perception of reformulated products and their regular counterpart.]]></dcterms:abstract>

The most abundant member of this family in nature is InsP6 (phytate, L12− in its fully deprotonated form). Phytate interacts strongly with inorganic and organic cations, and this interaction is essential for determining the possible functions of this biomolecule. Herein, the chemical, thermodynamic, and structural characterization of phytate–MnII species is presented in a study aimed at understanding how the interaction of the two components modulates their biological roles and their bioavailability. Polynuclear complexes Mn5(H2L)⋅16 H2O (1) and (H2terpy)2[Mn(H6L)(terpy)(H2O)]⋅17 H2O (terpy=terpyridine) (2) were prepared and characterized by different techniques. The isolation of 1 and the determination of its solubility, together with potentiometric titrations of the MnII–phytate system, allow the full description of this binary system. The preparation and crystal structure of 2 show a novel coordination mode of phytate, that is, the formation of infinite polymeric chains through equatorial phosphate groups.]]></dcterms:abstract>

Plant secondary metabolites are potential alternative treatments, however, their effect has been little studied on microsporidian diseases. Furthermore, there is poor information about the toxicity resulting from prolonged oral administration of these substances to bees. In this research, we evaluated in vivo effects of different essential oils and main components (MCs) on bee survival and Nosema ceranae development under an ad libitum non-choice regimen. Substances administered on sucrose syrup to newly emerged bees at different concentrations were avidly consumed and caused different survival performances. Nevertheless, sublethal doses of substances did not control the parasite. To the best of our knowledge, to date, no experimental results concerning the mechanical properties of graphene-derived nanoribbons have been reported in the literature. Simulations indicate that Cl- and F-doped ZGNRs present an equivalent 2-dimensional Young's modulus E2D, which seems to be higher than those of graphene and H-doped ZGNRs. This is a consequence of the electronic structure of the system, particularly originating from strong interactions between the dopant atoms localized at the edges. The interaction between dopant atoms located at the edges is higher for Cl and lower for F and O atoms. This is the origin of the observed trend, in which E2DCl > E2DF > E2DO for all the analyzed ZGNRs.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Owing to their reproducibility, stability, and cost-effective production, the recombinant variable domains of heavy-chain-only antibodies (VHHs) are becoming a salient option as immunoassay reagents. Recently, there have been several reports describing their application to the detection of small molecules (haptens). However, lacking the heavy-light chain interface of conventional antibodies, VHHs are not particularly apt to bind small analytes and failures are not uncommon. Here we describe the construction of a VHH phage display library against the cyanobacterial hepatotoxin microcystin LR and its selection using competitive panning and two novel panning strategies. The outcome of each strategy was evaluated by a large-scale screening using in vivo biotinylated nanobodies. The three methods selected for different nonoverlapping subsets of VHHs, allowing one to optimize the immunodetection of the toxin. The best results were obtained by promoting the isolation of VHHs with the slowest koff (off-rate selection). Among these, the biotinylated nanobody A2.3 performed in ELISA with excellent recovery and high sensitivity, IC50 = 0.28 μg/L, with a limit of detection that is well below the most rigorous guidelines for the toxin. While it may be case-specific, these results highlight the importance of exploring different panning strategies to optimize the selection of antihapten nanobodies.]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The coupling of 2-(tributylstannyl)cyclopent-2-enone with several (π-allyl)palladium complexes derived from allylic electrophiles was investigated as the key step in the synthesis of jasmonoids. These compounds have an important role in plant development, triggering direct and indirect responses when harmed to induce pest resistance. Palladium-catalyzed coupling conditions to obtain a jasmonoid library are described. The retention of geometry of the olefin in the allyl group is not always observed due to syn-anti isomerization of the (π-allyl)palladium complex. The methodology was employed for the synthesis of a simplified jasmonic acid analog.]]></dcterms:abstract>
