Protoscoleces show high developmental plasticity, being able to differentiate into either adult worms or metacestodes within definitive or intermediate hosts, respectively. Their outermost cellular layer is called the tegument, which is important in determining the infection outcome through its immunomodulating activities. Herein, we<br />report an in-depth characterization of the tegument of E. ortleppi protoscoleces performed through a combination of scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Using electron tomography, a three-dimensional reconstruction of the tegumental cellular territories was obtained, revealing a novel structure termed the &lsquo;tegumental vesicular body&rsquo; (TVB). Vesicle-like structures, possibly involved in endocytic/exocytic routes, were found within the TVB as well as in the parasite glycocalyx, distal cytoplasm and close inner structures. Furthermore, parasite antigens (GST-1 and AgB) were unevenly localised within tegumental structures, with both being detected in vesicles found within the TBV. Finally, the presence of host (bovine) IgG was also assessed, suggesting a possible endocytic route in protoscoleces. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the influence of two evoked consumption contexts on consumers&rsquo; intention to purchase lamb meat cuts using rating-based conjoint analysis. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the evoked consumption contexts: a celebratory lunch with family over the weekend (n = 157), and a dinner at home after a day&rsquo;s work (n = 171). Rating-based conjoint analysis was used to evaluate the influence of four independent variables on consumers&rsquo; intention to purchase lamb meat in each of the two evoked consumption contexts: type of cut, presentation, seasoning and price. Intention to purchase scores were significantly affected by the evoked context. Consumers were more willing to purchase lamb meat when the celebratory weekend lunch context was considered, compared to the weekday dinner. In the two contexts, price was the most important variable affecting willingness to purchase lamb meat, followed by type of cut. However, at the aggregate level the utility values were similar for the two contexts: consumers expressed higher intention to purchase for leg cuts without seasoning at the highest price. In the two contexts different consumer segments were identified, which gave different relative importance to the variables included in the conjoint task. However, conclusions regarding consumers&rsquo; segmentation were affected by evoked consumption context. The findings suggest that evoked consumption contexts influence results from conjoint analysis, which suggests that they may be an interesting methodological alternative to increase the validity of conjoint tasks. The development of air-dried cured sheep meat products represents an interesting option to add value to the meat of adult animals. In this context, the aim of the present study was to evaluate consumer sensory and hedonic perception of sheep meat coppa, an innovative product. Four sheep meat coppa samples were formulated by varying smoking (smoked vs. non-smoked) and salt content (4.5% vs. 3.4%), and compared with two commercial samples of regular pork meat coppa. Samples were evaluated under blind or informed conditions by 202 consumers, who had to rate their liking and to answer a check-all-that-apply question. Sheep and pork meat coppa samples did not largely differ in their overall liking in both experimental conditions. Smoking and high salt content significantly increased consumers' hedonic perception of sheep meat coppa. The information included in the labels did not modify consumer hedonic perception but influenced their sensory description, particularly for the terms related to the type of meat used in their manufacture. Hypoxic regions of tumours are associated with increased resistance to radiation and chemotherapy. Nevertheless, hypoxia has been used as a tool for specific activation of some antitumour prodrugs, named bioreductive agents. Phenazine dioxides are an example of such bioreductive prodrugs. Our 2D-quantitative structure activity relationship studies established that phenazine dioxides electronic and lipophilic descriptors are related to survival fraction in oxia or in hypoxia. Additionally, statistically significant models, derived by partial least squares, were obtained between survival fraction in oxia and comparative molecular field analysis standard model (r2 = 0.755, q2 = 0.505 and F = 26.70) or comparative molecular similarity indices analysis-combined steric and electrostatic fields (r2 = 0.757, q2 = 0.527 and F = 14.93), and survival fraction in hypoxia and comparative molecular field analysis standard model (r2 = 0.736, q2 = 0.521 and F = 18.63) or comparative molecular similarity indices analysis-hydrogen bond acceptor field (r2 = 0.858, q2 = 0.737 and F = 27.19). Categorical classification was used for the biological parameter selective cytotoxicity emerging also good models, derived by soft independent modelling of class analogy, with both comparative molecular field analysis standard model (96% of overall classification accuracy) and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis-steric field (92% of overall classification accuracy). 2D- and 3D-quantitative structure-activity relationships models provided important insights into the chemical and structural basis involved in the molecular recognition process of these phenazines as bioreductive agents and should be useful for the design of new structurally related analogues with improved potency. Tradicionalmente, los extractos y plantas frescas de Mentha han sido usados para prolongar la vida &uacute;til de los alimentos y como componentes de productos farmac&eacute;uticos y cosm&eacute;ticos, por sus propiedades antimicrobianas y antioxidantes. Una alternativa viable para la comercializaci&oacute;n de menta es su presentaci&oacute;n como producto fresco, cortado, envasado y listo para usar, con un mayor valor agregado. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar las variaciones en el rendimiento y la composici&oacute;n de los aceites esenciales de Mentha&times;piperita y M. spicata frescas, cortadas, envasadas y almacenadas a 0&deg;C. Para ello, los tallos herb&aacute;ceos y hojas de ambas especies fueron cosechados, seleccionados, lavados con agua corriente y desinfectados por inmersi&oacute;n en agua clorada (200 ppm de cloro activo; pH 6-7; 1 min). Se secaron mediante corriente de aire forzado y se envasaron en bandejas cubiertas con pel&iacute;cula de cloruro de polivinilo, conteniendo 30-35g del producto as&iacute; procesado. Se conservaron durante 21 d&iacute;as a 0&ordm;C. Las experiencias de almacenamiento se realizaron por duplicado. Al inicio y al final de la conservaci&oacute;n se extrajeron los aceites esenciales mediante una trampa graduada tipo Clevenger, apta para esencias de menor densidad que el agua. El rendimiento se expres&oacute; como mL de aceite esencial/100g de materia seca. Los componentes de los aceites esenciales se analizaron mediante HRGC-MS, utilizando una columna capilar de s&iacute;lica fundida, con fase estacionaria ligada BP 20 de tipo polietilenglicol. Los resultados se sometieron a an&aacute;lisis de varianza y se compararon las medias mediante el test de la DMS (p&lt;0,05). El rendimiento de aceite esencial estuvo comprendido entre 1,5 y 3,2 mL/100g (base seca), dependiendo de la especie de menta. En el caso de M. piperita fueron identificados 24 componentes al principio y 23 al final del almacenamiento, correspondiendo respectivamente al 89,7% y 82,4% del total de los componentes analizados. En M. spicata fueron identificados 11 y 16 constituyentes, representando el 60,8% (d&iacute;a 0) y 53,1% (d&iacute;a 21) del total de los componentes del aceite. Los principales compuestos responsables del flavor de M. piperita variaron apreciablemente durante el almacenamiento: la mentona disminuy&oacute; 29,4 % con respecto al porcentaje inicial, luego de 21 d&iacute;as de almacenamiento, al igual que el mentol que lo hizo en menor medida (7,2 % del porcentaje inicial, en el mismo per&iacute;odo). Por otro lado, la piperitona mostr&oacute; un leve incremento. De los componentes que dan lugar al flavor caracter&iacute;stico de M. spicata, los m&aacute;s afectados durante el almacenamiento fueron la carvona, que se redujo un 17% con respecto al porcentaje inicial despu&eacute;s de 21 d&iacute;as a 0&deg;C, y el limoneno que tambi&eacute;n sufri&oacute; una notoria disminuci&oacute;n (22% con relaci&oacute;n al inicio) en el mismo per&iacute;odo. Estas modificaciones, vinculadas al metabolismo de los terpenos, ser&iacute;an relevantes para el dise&ntilde;o del producto. Objective: To explore the conceptualisation of healthy food by citizens and how they judge the healthiness of ultra-processed foods.<br />Design: Four focus groups were conducted using a semi-structured discussion guide. Focus group discussions were held about the concept of healthy food, what characterise a healthy product and healthiness perception of ultra-processed products.<br />Transcripts of the focus groups were analysed following an inductive coding approach.<br />Setting: Uruguay, one of the Latin American countries with the highest prevalence of overweight and obesity.<br />Participants: Fifty-two adult Uruguayan participants, diverse in terms of gender, age, educational level and socio-economic status.<br />Results: In agreement with previous studies on lay perceptions of healthy eating, the conceptualisation of healthy food was mainly focused on food characteristics.<br />Although participants regarded lack of processing as a cue for healthiness, they did not categorise all ultra-processed products as unhealthy. Albeit some product categories were automatically regarded as unhealthy, participants considered that<br />other categories could include healthy and unhealthy products. In such cases, they<br />explicitly referred to several simplified cognitive strategies to judge whether an ultra-processed product is healthy or not. Snacks consumed at school are an important source of energy and nutrients in children&rsquo;s diets. Understanding the factors that underlie children and mothers&rsquo; choices of school snacks can contribute to the development of strategies to promote healthier eating patterns. In this context, the aims of the present work were: i) to explore children&rsquo;s conceptualization of school snacking, and ii) to identify children and mothers&rsquo; perceived barriers and facilitators to healthy snacking in the school environment. Two studies with 518 children and 1183 mothers were carried out. In Study 1, children (n = 255) were asked to draw a child eating a snack at school. In Study 2, five incomplete dialogues about school snacks were presented to participants (263 children and 1183 mothers), who had to complete them using their own words. Data were analyzed using content analysis. The drawings showed that school snacking frequently occurs during the recess while children do other activities, such as playing football or other games. Fruit, sandwiches, cookies and juices were the foods and beverages most frequently included in the drawings. Responses to the dialogues enabled the identification of barriers to healthy snacking in the school environment, which were related to children&rsquo;s positive hedonic reaction towards unhealthy foods, the sales of unhealthy products in the school canteen, lack of time to prepare home-made snacks and mothers&rsquo; perception that children can eat unhealthy snacks once in a while. In addition, the existence of a school snacking policy was mentioned as a facilitator for healthy snacking. Household food waste is a complex phenomenon determined by consumer behavior along the steps of the &ldquo;food journey&rdquo; that goes from purchasing to final disposal. Although avoiding food waste is socially desirable and raises positive attitudes, consumers do not frequently engage in avoidance behaviors. The objectives of the present work were: i) to explore the views of Uruguayan citizens on household food waste, and ii) to identify drivers of food waste among Uruguayan households. A total of 20 in-depth interviews based on a semi-structured guide were conducted by telephone. Participants were asked to recall and describe the last time<br />they discarded food, as well as to describe the most common food waste situations in their household, the most commonly used strategies to avoid food waste and how they could reduce it. The transcripts were analyzed using content analysis based on a deductive-inductive approach. Interviews revealed that most of the participants perceived food waste in their homes as null or low, whereas food waste in the country was regarded as high. When participants described food waste incidents, they perceived it as &rsquo;unavoidable&rsquo;, suggesting that they tended<br />to find a rational explanation outside of their will to justify their behavior. Participants&rsquo; discourses enabled the identification of drivers related to behavioral factors, personal factors, product factors, and contextual factors. Specifically, the focus was on how socio-demographic characteristics and personality traits linked to risk perception and time orientation impact on discretionary salt consumption patterns. For this purpose, an online cross-sectional survey with a convenience sample of 498 Uruguayan participants was carried out. Participants completed the consideration of future consequences (CFC) scale adapted for eating behaviour, a short survey about discretionary salt consumption patterns and indicated their degree of agreement<br />with statements measuring perceived risk of sodium consumption. Finally, socio-demographic data were<br />collected. BRT were applied to build predictive models that related discretionary salt usage to socio-demographic<br />characteristics, the two factors of the CFC-Food scale (consideration of the future and consideration of the immediate<br />consequences of eating behaviour), and the two factors of the perceived risk of sodium consumption scale (severity of perceived risks and risk compensation). Age, time orientation and perceived risk were the most relevant explanatory variables for discretionary salt usage. Older people had a lower likelihood of adding salt to food, either at home or when eating out. In addition, individuals who tend to be present rather than future<br />oriented, as well as those with low perception of risk severity and susceptibility were more likely to add salt to foods. Complement has been shown to lyse protoscoleces of Echinococcus granulosus, but products from this parasite are able to consume complement, and this has been proposed as an evasion mechanism. The murine secondary hydatidosis model, with intraperitoneal inoculation, is used in this work to assess the occurrence in vivo of complement consumption by the parasite as well as the role of complement during the establishment of infection. Although the measurement of systemic levels of C3 activation, total C3, and hemolytic complement in challenged mice yielded no evidence of complement consumption, the relevance of local consumption at the site of infection cannot be ruled out. The role of complement during establishment of infection was assessed by comparing parasite burdens in normal and complement-depleted mice. Complement depletion by treatment with cobra venom factor caused a 79% reduction in cyst numbers (P &lt; 0.05). Possible explanations of this unexpected result are discussed. The results presented suggest that lysis or opsonization by host complement are not effective against the establishing parasite in this model. They also indicate the significance of complement activation by the parasite needs to be studied at a local level. Las formas larvarias de Echinococcus granulosus causan la hidatidosis, una infecci6n zoon6tica de distribuci6n universal. EI complemento de varias especies es lftico in vitro, aun en ausencia de anticuerpos, para las form as infectantes de la hidatidosis primaria (oncosferas) y secundaria (protoesc6lices). La capacidad del parasito de sobrevivir in vivo a esta acci6n ha llevado a proponer mecanismos de evasi6n; el consumo de complemento por productos del parasito puede ser uno de ellos. En este trabajo se utiliza el modelo de infecci6n experimental secundaria murina para evaluar in vivo, por un lado, los efectos de la infecci6n sobre el complemento, y por otro, la eficacia del complemento contra el parasito. Para validar el empleo del modelo murino se verific6 la lisis in vitro de protoesc6lices por complemento de varias cepas de rat6n. Por la misma raz6n, se ensay6 in vitro el consumo de complemento murino por antigenos solubles del parasito. Se verific6 dicha actividad en antigenos de protoesc6lices, lfquido hidcHico y membranas, siendo la misma debil en el ultimo caso. La determinaci6n in vivo de complemento mostr6 que este no es consumido sistemicamente por la infecci6n en su fase inicial, ni probablemente en todo su curso. Por otro lado, se encontr6 un aumento moderado (30%) del nivel de C3 a la septima semana de infecci6n, coincidiendo con el segundo pico de una respuesta de fase aguda bimodal, evidenciada en niveles aumentados de protefna serica amiloide P. Para evaluar la eficacia in vivo del complemento contra el parasito se compar6 la infecci6n en ratones normales y descomplementados por inoculaoi6n de factor veneno de cobra. Dos protocolos con distinta dosis infectante indicaron que este tratamiento no exacerba la infecci6n. Aunque el primero de ellos (1000 protoesc6lices) arroj6 niveles muy bajos de infecci6n para ambos lotes, imposibilitando un anaIisis detallado, en el segundo (2000 protoesc6lices), los animales descomplementados desarrollaron un 80% menos de quistes (P &lt; 0.05). These two compounds, poorly understood functionally, have complicated complexation and solid formation behaviours with multivalent cations. We now cover similar ground for Ins(1,3,4,5,6)P5, describing its interactions in solution with Na?, K?, Mg2?, Ca2?, Cu2?, Fe2? and Fe3?, and its solid-formation equilibria with Ca2? and Mg2?. Ins(1,3,4,5,6)P5 forms soluble complexes of 1:1 stoichiometry with all multivalent cations studied. The affinity for Fe3? is similar to that of InsP6 and inositol 1,2,3-trisphosphate, indicating that the 1,2,3- trisphosphate motif, which Ins(1,3,4,5,6)P5 lacks, is not absolutely necessary for high-affinity Fe3? complexation by inositol phosphates, even if it is necessary for their prevention of the Fenton reaction. With excess Ca2? and Mg2?, Ins(1,3,4,5,6)P5 also forms the polymetallic complexes [M4(H2L)] [where L is fully deprotonated Ins(1,3,4,5,6)P5]. However, unlike InsP6, Ins(1,3,4,5,6)P5 is predicted not to be fully associated with Mg2? under simulated cytosolic/ nuclear conditions. The neutral Mg2? and Ca2? complexes have significant windows of solubility, but they precipitate as [Mg4(H2L)]�23H2O or [Ca4(H2L)]�16H2O whenever they exceed 135 and 56 lM in concentration, respectively. Secondary metabolites from plants have been the source of various natural products with anti-insect properties; having some of them already reached the market. In recent years, the drawbacks related to the use of synthetic pesticides have triggered the need to find alternatives and brought about revitalization on bioprospecting programs. In that direction, this work presents the results of a study on a South American native species. The methanolic leaf extract of Clytostoma callistegioides (Bignoniaceae), was hydrolyzed with HCl, and sequentially subjected to Sephadex LH20 and HPLC procedures. Three flavones, not previously obtained from this species, were identified by NMR and UV spectra: 4�-Hydroxywogonin, Acacetin and Galangustin. Two important agricultural pests, Myzus persicae and Rhopalosiphum padi (Hemiptera: Aphididae), were studied in their reluctance to settling on leaf treated with these flavonoids, and the results are here reported in terms of a preference index (PI), calculated as PI = [(%C &minus; %T)/(%C + %T)]; where %C and %T are the percentages of aphids settled on the treated and the control leaf pieces, respectively. While 4�-Hydroxywogonin did not exhibit significant activity against neither of the aphids, Acacetin was active only against R. padi (PI = 0.3 &plusmn; 0.1). Aphid settling inhibition was evaluated with a grass specialist, Rhopalosiphum padi, and a feeding generalist, Myzus persicae (both Hemiptera: Aphididae). Antifeedant activity was tested with adults of the specialist Epilachna paenulata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and larvae of the generalist Spodoptera littoralis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Finally, contact toxicity was assessed with honey bees, Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera: Apidae). Strong settling inhibition (SI) activity (expressed as %SI, where 100% means complete inhibition by the extract) was found only for the twig extracts of A. edulis (Sapindaceae) against M. persicae (%SI = 77&plusmn;4). Antifeedant activity (expressed as % of feeding reduction (FR), where 100% means no consumption on extract-treated diet) against E. paenulata was significant for the leaf extracts of L. cestroides (Solanaceae) (%FR = 100&plusmn;0) as well as of all Bignoniaceae and Sapindaceae species. Resultados. La mayor&iacute;a de los comentarios manifestaron la preocupaci&oacute;n por la elevada prevalencia de obesidad y enfermedades no transmisibles en el pa&iacute;s y destacaron el compromiso con la implementaci&oacute;n de acciones que contribuyan a combatir esta problem&aacute;tica de salud. Sin embargo, 81% de los comentarios plante&oacute; desacuerdo con la propuesta de decreto elevada a consulta p&uacute;blica y realiz&oacute; cr&iacute;ticas generales sobre su validez. El contenido de los comentarios se relacion&oacute; con siete dimensiones: falta de justificaci&oacute;n de la medida, violaci&oacute;n de compromisos internacionales, cr&iacute;ticas al sistema de advertencias, discriminaci&oacute;n a alimentos industrializados envasados, cr&iacute;ticas al modelo de perfil de nutrientes, otras cr&iacute;ticas a aspectos espec&iacute;ficos del proyecto de decreto y efectos econ&oacute;micos negativos. En cada dimensi&oacute;n se discute la pertinencia y consistencia t&eacute;cnica y normativa de los contenidos vertidos por los representantes de la industria. Conclusiones. Bajo un aparente acuerdo con la necesidad de adoptar medidas, se evidenci&oacute;, sin embargo, una fuerte oposici&oacute;n a la pol&iacute;tica y en particular al sistema de advertencias por parte de la industria alimentaria. Los resultados del an&aacute;lisis aportan insumos para facilitar el proceso de implementaci&oacute;n de regulaciones similares en otros pa&iacute;ses. El conocimiento de las floraciones es &uacute;til para predecir el comportamiento de las colonias de Apis mellifera (abeja de la miel). El objetivo fue determinar las caracter&iacute;sticas flor&iacute;sticas desde el punto de vista ap&iacute;cola de un bosque serrano en Uruguay. Realizamos ocho visitas en tres sitios aleda&ntilde;os a la colmena: a 10-20 m, 500 m y 1500 m de distancia. En la primera visita determinamos especies, familias, origen (nativo o ex&oacute;tico) y frecuencia de cada tax&oacute;n. En visitas posteriores, censamos cu&aacute;les estaban florecidas (presencia o ausencia). Asignamos a cada especie un valor de uno a cinco para la abundancia (A) y la duraci&oacute;n de la floraci&oacute;n (P), durante dos a&ntilde;os. Utilizamos el &iacute;ndice de Shannon para medir la diversidad flor&iacute;stica. Se utiliz&oacute; un modelo lineal generali-zado para analizar la floraci&oacute;n a trav&eacute;s de las variables respuesta: presencia de floraci&oacute;n en invierno, primavera, verano y oto&ntilde;o, as&iacute; como duraci&oacute;n de la floraci&oacute;n. Calculamos un &iacute;ndice de Shannon de 3,6, lo que indica una alta biodiversidad. Luego correlacionamos los hallazgos de la prospecci&oacute;n con datos de la literatura sobre la ocurrencia de cada especie en estudios melisopalinol&oacute;gicos en mieles maduras e inmaduras. Por &uacute;ltimo, defi-nimos el t&eacute;rmino flora convertible para identificar los recursos florales cuyo polen se almacena cuando no hay ninguna flora disponible. Estas fueron Lithraea brasiliensis, Baccharis articulata, Baccharis trimera, Blepharo-calyx salicifolius, Eugenia uniflora, Colletia Paradoxa, Oxalis sp., Scutia buxifolia, Jodina rhombifolia, Aloysia gratissima, para las temporadas de primavera y oto&ntilde;o (P&lt;0.05). In the present investigation, the effect of the Mo in the LaNi3,6Co0,7Mn(0.4&minus;x)Al0,3Mox AB5-type hydrogen storage alloys was studied. The alloys structural and microstructural characterizations were performed by means of X-ray diffraction phase analysis and scanning electron microscopy.<br /><br />The electrochemical properties were studied through the measurements of discharge capacity, activation process, rate capability and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of the electrodes.<br /><br />The replacement of manganese by molybdenum, in the intermediate concentration tested (2% w/w) has a positive effect. This alloy presents the greatest discharge capacity, the closest potential to system equilibrium potential and therefore the lowest overpotentials. This alloy also has the best behavior for high-rate dischargeability and in concordance, the lowest charge transfer resistance.
