A summary of the resource.
The essential oil of aerial parts of Salvia guaranitica, grown in a small-scale experimental field in Uruguay, was analysed by GC, GC–MS and 13C-NMR; 49 constituents (86.6% of the total sample) were identified. The major components were found to be sesquiterpene hydrocarbons: germacrene D (25.0%), β-elemene (20.0%), β-caryophyllene (8.8%) and β-bourbonene (6.2%), whereas monoterpenes only reached 4% of the sample analysed. A summary of the resource.
The respiratory infection COVID-19 is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV- 2), which continues to spread worldwide causing more than a million deaths yearly. Despite the rapid development of vaccines for prevention, a critical need remains for therapeutic agents to combat the established infection. With this goal in mind, we conducted a target- (SARS-CoV-2 chemotrypsin-like protease, MPro) and phenotypic-based screening of a subset of compounds from our in-house chemo-library. The selected compounds have been previously studied in different diseases’ models. About 45 % of the analyzed compounds displayed inhibitory activity against MPro in the low μM range. Additionally, 3 out of 26 tested compounds (11 %) against SARS-CoV-2 displayed true anti-viral activity and (SI > 2). One of them belongs to the chloroquine-heterocycle chemotype, which was previously reported to hold anti-SARS-CoV-2. The remaining two novel hits belong to the polyhedral‑boron system, metallacarborane and dicarba-closo-dodecaborane chemotypes, which have not been previously reported for this anti-viral activity. In addition to targeting MPro, the chloroquine- and the metallacarborane-derivative, but not the dicarba-closo-dodecaborane, also inhibited the papain-like protease of SARS-CoV-2.

Acaricides and the gut parasite Nosema ceranae are commonly present in most productive hives. Those stressors could be a�ecting key semiochemicals, which act as homeostasis regulators in Apis mellifera colonies, such as cuticular hydrocarbons (CHC) involved in social recognition and ethyl oleate (EO) which plays a role as primer pheromone in honey bees. Here we test the e�ect of amitraz, coumaphos, tau-fluvalinate and flumethrin, commonly applied to treat varroosis, on honey bee survival time, rate of food consumption, CHC profiles and EO production on N. ceranae-infected and non-infected honey bees. Di�erent sublethal concentrations of amitraz, coumaphos, tau-fluvalinate and flumethrin were administered chronically in a syrup-based diet. After treatment, purified hole-body extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. While N. ceranae infection was also shown to decrease EO production a�ecting survival rates, acaricides showed no significant e�ect on this pheromone. As for the CHC, we found no changes in relation to the health status or consumption of acaricides. This absence of alteration in EO or CHC as response to acaricides ingestion or in combination with N. ceranae, suggests that worker honey bees exposed to those highly ubiquitous drugs are hardly di�erentiated by nest-mates. Having determined a synergic e�ect on mortality in worker bees exposed to coumaphos and Nosema infection but also, alterations in EO production as a response to N. ceranae infection it is an interesting clue to deeper understand the e�ects of parasite-host-pesticide interaction on colony functioning

Bisthiazolidines (BTZ) are bicyclic compounds considered as penicillin analogs that inhibit the full range of Metallo‐β‐Lactamases (MBLs) and potentiate β‐lactam activity against resistant bacteria. Herein, we present a new methodology to prepare 2‐substituted bisthiazolidines by aldehyde exchange. Thirteen new bisthiazolidines were prepared using this methodology, with yields ranging from 31 to 75 %. The reaction is based on in situ imines formation, which are able to exchange side chains. The reaction intermediates were studied based on NMR experiments, and a key imine 1b‐II could be detected in the reaction mixture. Furthermore, a DFT computational analysis was performed to gain insights into the reaction mechanism, allowing us to unveil the different pathways and their activation barriers within the synthetic route. The results suggest that the most favorable route involve the formation of the thiazolidine 1b‐III by i) a N‐assisted N–C bond cleavage, and ii) a thiol‐mediated 5 endo‐trig cyclization followed by a C–N bond cleavage. In contrast with previously reported evidence, the imine metathesis was discarded as a plausible pathway. Finally, the reaction of 1b‐III with aldehyde 2a leads to bicycle 4a via the iminium ion 1b‐V.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
We studied the production and the potential use of a purple-pigment produced by an Antarctic bacterial isolate. This pigment was identified as violacein, a metabolite produced by many bacterial strains and reported that it has antiproliferative activity in many cell lines. We analyzed the effect of temperature and the composition of the growth medium on pigment production, achieving the highest yield at 20 °C in Tryptic Soy Broth medium supplemented with 3.6 g/L glucose. We doubled the yield of the pigment production when the process was scaled up in a 5 L bioreactor (77 mg/L of crude pigment). The pigment was purified and identified by mass spectrometry (DI–EI–MS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy as violacein. We performed survival assays that showed that the pure pigment has antiproliferative activity and sensitize HeLa cells (cervix cell carcinoma) to cisplatin. Besides, the pigment did not show genotoxic activity in HeLa cells as found performing micronucleus assays. These results suggest that this pigment may be used as anticancer or sensitizer to cisplatin drug in cervix cancer.

Nanocrystalline La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Cu0.2O3−δ (LSFCu) material was synthetized by combustion method using EDTA as fuel/chelating agent and NH4NO3 as combustion promoter. Structural characterization using thermodiffraction data allowed to determine a reversible phase transition at 425 °C from a low temperature R-3c phase to a high temperature Pm-3m phase and to calculate the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of both phases. Important characteristics for cathode application as electronic conductivity and chemical compatibility with Ce0.9Gd0.1O2−δ (CGO) electrolyte were evaluated. LSFCu presented a p-type conductor behavior with maximum conductivity of 135 S cm−1 at 275 °C and showed a good stability with CGO electrolyte at high temperatures. This work confirmed that as prepared LSFCu has excellent microstructural characteristics and an electrical conductivity between 100 and 60 S cm−1 in the 500–700 °C range which is sufficiently high to work as intermediate temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (IT-SOFCs) cathode. However a change in the thermal expansion coefficient consistent with a small oxygen loss process may affect the electrode-electrolyte interface during fabrication and operation of a SOFC.

Tapeworms (Cestoda) cause neglected diseases that can be fatal and are difficult to treat, owing to inefficient drugs. Here we present an analysis of tapeworm genome sequences using the human-infective species Echinococcus multilocularis, E. granulosus, Taenia solium and the laboratory model Hymenolepis microstoma as examples. The 115- to 141-megabase genomes offer insights into the evolution of parasitism. Synteny is maintained with distantly related blood flukes but we find extreme losses of genes and pathways that are ubiquitous in other animals, including 34 homeobox families and several determinants of stem cell fate. Tapeworms have specialized detoxification pathways, metabolism that is finely tuned to rely on nutrients scavenged from their hosts, and species-specific expansions of non-canonical heat shock proteins and families of known antigens. We identify new potential drug targets, including some on which existing pharmaceuticals may act. The genomes provide a rich resource to underpin the development of urgently needed treatments and control.

A summary of the resource.
The use of biocontrol agents to inhibit postharvest pathogens has shown great potential. However, there have been many obstacles to their implementation as a feasible commercial strategy. A lack of understanding of how to integrate microbial agents with commercial processing practices in packing houses has been one of the main problems. Many physical and chemical treatments intended to minimize postharvest losses are also being incorporated into standard processing lines. A detailed analysis of the possible interactions of these alternative treatments with biocontrol agents is essential to achieve successful results. This paper reports a number of treatments that are used in combination with biocontrol agents and discusses the potential of an integrated approach to minimize postharvest losses.

The Sterculia striata nut commonly known as chichá is consumed raw or toasted inBrazil but information on its chemical composition and antioxidant activity are scarce in the literature. In this work, the nutritional composition, minerals profile, lipid composition and phenolic compounds profile of chichá nuts and its by-products (pellicle and shell) were determined. The results showed that the nuts and the cake contain considerable amount of fibers and proteins and are rich in minerals (Fe, Mn and Cu). Oleic acid was the main fatty acid (37.8%), and PPO (36.0%) and POP (15.6%) were the main triacylglycerides present in the chichá oil. The phytosterols β-sitosterol, stigmasteroland campesterol (1848.5 μg g− 1, 542.2 μg g− 1 and 186.3 μg g− 1, respectively), and the γ-, δ-, α- and β-tocopherol (8.85; 2.10; 1.64, and 0.11 mg 100 g− 1, respectively) were identified in the oil. The antioxidant activity (ABTS and FRAP assays) followed the order pellicle > shell > nuts (13.25 and 84.65; 8.71 and 64.3; 5.85 and 36.79 μmol TEACg− 1, respectively). The main phenolic compounds identified in the extracts were ellagic and ferulic acids; ellagic and protocatechuic acids; and protocatechuic, ellagic and methoxyphenylacetic acids for the nuts, shells and pellicle, respectively. A strong positive correlation was observed between total phenolic content and antioxidant activity determined by ABTS and FRAP assays (r = 0.9067, p < 0.01; and r = 0.9584, p < 0.01; respectively). Collectively, the results showed that the chichá is a nut of high nutritional value, rich in bioactive compounds.

Solid solutions could represent a viable alternative to better understand and control structure–property relationships of drugs, in order to optimize their properties for practical applications. Lamivudine (3TC) and emtricitabine (FTC) are nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor antiretroviral drugs, which have similar molecular structures, differing by a single fluorine atom, which is only present in the FTC molecule. Due to these similarities in structure and molecular resemblances, lamivudine and emtricitabine are good candidates for producing a solid solution with physicochemical properties controlled by the stoichiometry. Following this hypothesis, the formation of a nonconventional solid solution was verified, whose crystalline structure is not defined by any of the individual constituents but by the one of the lamivudine hydrate with emtricitabine as a solute. The crystalline structures of two members of the solid solution were determined showing a nonuniform distribution of the solute among the independent molecules of the asymmetric unit of the lamivudine hydrate structure. Thermal analysis investigations confirmed that physicochemical properties could be controlled through the variation of the emtricitabine content.

Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) are devices for clean and sustainable energy production, where the generation of electrical energy occurs as a result of the anodic ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). One of the main challenges of these devices is the development of cost-effective and sustainable anodic catalysts, minimizing the use of noble metals such as Pd. In this sense, biomass-derived carbon-supported core–shell nanoparticles of PdNi-based electrocatalyst are of great interest for EOR and its application in DEFCs. The purpose of this work was to demonstrate the possibility of synthesizing a core–shell Ni@Pd electrocatalysts via hydrothermal method, in a fast, simple and environmental friendly way. A biomass hydrothermal liquefaction method using nickel and palladium salts was used to synthesize a biocarbon-supported nickel/palladium core–shell electrocatalyst (Ni@Pd/aHC). The electrocatalyst was morphological and chemical characterized in order to confirm the core–shell particle formation. The electrochemical characterization showed that the Ni@Pd/aHC sample has good electrocatalytic behaviour and good stability over time. The EOR mechanism on the sample and their influence in the faradaic efficiency of a cell were also studied by spectroelectrochemical analysis.

<p>An in-house synthesized activated biocarbon (aBC) and commercial Vulcan carbon (V) were studied as PdSn catalyst<br />supports for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in an alkaline medium. The results obtained showed that the PdSn/V<br />electrocatalyst presented much higher catalytic performance than the PdSn/aBC. These results can be associated with the<br />fact that the catalyst particles in the PdSn/V electrocatalyst presented a higher SnO2 concentration compared to PdSn/aBC. The presence of SnO2 has an electronic effect that accelerates the adsorption of ethanol on the surface of Pd, thus enhancing the ethanol oxidation kinetics and contributing to a significant improvement in the PdSn/V catalytic activity. However, nosignificant differences were observed in the EOR mechanism.</p>

A facile and short chemoenzymatic synthesis of (−) 1L-5-amino-5-deoxy-allo-inositol hexaacetate is described using benzyl azide as starting material. The key transformations consist of an enzymatic dioxygenation using the toluene dioxygenase enzymatic complex, followed by an allylic azide double sigmatropic [3,3] shift to introduce the nitrogen functionality in the ring in a stereoselective manner. Azide reduction and further regioselective oxidation of the diene moiety afforded the desired inosamine in only eight steps from benzyl azide.

Four tricyclic lactams that structurally resemble alkaloids with the pancratistatin skeleton were synthetized from bromobenzene by a chemoenzymatic strategy. The sequence involved enzymatic dihydroxylation, efficient stereodirected oxidation of double bonds, inter- or intramolecular Huisgen cycloaddition, and a solvent-free cyclization. The complex structures were obtained in high chemical and optical purity and may be good candidates for biological testing.

Uno de los problemas más importantes que afronta la humanidad es la contaminación de los recursos hídricos y la disponibilidad de agua potable para vastos sectores de la población. En muchos casos estos contaminantes tienen efectos nocivos sobre distintas formas de vida, constituyendo un riesgo ambiental y sanitario que se agudiza frente a la creciente demanda de agua de calidad. Por esta razón, el desarrollo de procesos que permitan la eliminación de contaminantes del agua resulta una contribución al desarrollo sustentable. Los métodos convencionales para el tratamiento de aguas resultan ineficientes en el caso de contaminantes recalcitrantes y/o de elevada toxicidad. Para este conjunto de contaminantes se requieren técnicas no convencionales más efectivas. Entre las técnicas no convencionales se encuentran los Procesos Avanzados de Oxidación (PAO), efectivos en la oxidación prácticamente total de un gran número de contaminantes orgánicos resistentes a los tratamientos convencionales. Entre los PAO más interesantes se encuentra el proceso foto-Fenton que consiste en la generación de radicales hidroxilo, de alto poder oxidante, mediante la acción combinada de hierro y peróxido de hidrógeno en una solución irradiada con luz adecuada. Este proceso presenta como desventaja la necesidad de remover el hierro en solución luego del tratamiento, lo que encarece el proceso. Esto puede evitarse utilizando sólidos catalíticamente activos en este tipo de procesos, lo que facilita la separación y recuperación del catalizador y posibilita su reutilización. Es así como en los últimos años se han desarrollado los denominados procesos foto-Fenton heterogéneos. En Uruguay existe un yacimiento de arcillas montmorilloníticas de alta pureza, ubicado en Bañado de Medina, Departamento de Cerro Largo. La presente Tesis está orientada a la obtención de catalizadores activos en procesos tipo foto-Fenton, a partir de esta arcilla montmorillonítica, con miras a valorizar un recurso natural nacional y v favorecer el desarrollo de un proceso que contribuya a resolver problemas de contaminación del agua. Se prepararon catalizadores incorporando hierro como especie activa en la arcilla mediante la técnica de pilareado, obteniendo arcillas pilareadas con hierro (Fe-PILCs). Se recurrió a diferentes técnicas para caracterizar la arcilla y los catalizadores. Se estudió la influencia de diferentes parámetros de preparación en las propiedades de los catalizadores y en su desempeño catalítico en el proceso foto-Fenton, aplicado a la degradación del colorante naranja de metilo como compuesto modelo. Se estudió la influencia del fenómeno de adsorción del compuesto a degradar sobre el catalizador y del pH del medio en la actividad catalítica. Para ello se utilizaron compuestos modelo con diferentes propiedades: azul de metileno, naranja de metilo y fenol. Además se ensayó la aplicación del proceso foto-Fenton heterogéneo empleando una de las Fe-PILCs, a la degradación de atrazina en medio acuoso. Este herbicida es uno de los contaminantes del agua producto de la actividad agropecuaria de nuestro país. La Tesis aborda también el estudio de la eficiencia en el uso de la radiación del proceso foto-Fenton heterogéneo con Fe-PILCs como catalizadores, mediante la determinación de la eficiencia aparente y la eficiencia cuántica del proceso. Para ello se evaluó la actividad catalítica en la degradación del contaminante 2-clorofenol, se cuantificó el flujo de radiación que ingresa al medio de reacción y la velocidad de absorción de fotones en el mismo. Esto requirió la determinación de las propiedades ópticas de las Fe-PILCs en suspensión mediante medidas espectrofotométricas y la resolución de la Ecuación de Transferencia de Radiación utilizando un método numérico.

A summary of the resource.
Objective: The information displayed on the packages of feeding bottles and teats commercialised in Montevideo (Uruguay) was analysed using content analysis with the goal of identifying key marketing practices that may discourage breast-feeding. Design: The study was conducted as part of the periodic assessment performed by the Uruguayan government to monitor the marketing of breast milk substitutes. All the feeding bottles and teats sold in forty-four retail outlets selling breast milk substitutes were purchased. The information available on the packages was analysed using content analysis and descriptive statistics. Setting: Montevideo, Uruguay. Results: A total of 197 feeding bottles and 71 teats were found. The majority of the packages included information to enable caregivers to adequately use the products, including recommended age, instructions on how to use the products and instructions on the use of hygienic practices. However, the packages frequently included information that implied that bottle feeding was equivalent to breast-feeding, particularly from a physiological perspective, or that idealised product use. Idealisations included ability to reduce colic, improvements in the feeding experience and improvements in children’s health, well-being and development. Statements on the superiority of breast-feeding were infrequent. Conclusions: The results from the present work showed the high prevalence of marketing practices on the packages of feeding bottles and teats that may discourage breast-feeding. Stricter and more detailed regulations seem necessary to enable caregivers to make informed feeding decisions for infants.

A summary of the resource.
A raw clay from Uruguay was modified with aluminium to obtain an aluminium pillared clay (Al-PILC). The solids were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The Al-PILC retained the typical laminar structure of montmorillonite. The specific surface area and the microporous volume of the Al-PILC, 235 m2 g-1 and 0.096 cm3 g-1, respectively, were much higher than those of the clay. The phosphate adsorption capacity of the Al-PILC was higher than those of the clay. The phosphate adsorption kinetic followed the pseudo-first-order model for both, the clay and the Al-PILC, and the phosphate adsorption isotherm for the Al-PILC fit the Freundlich model.

A summary of the resource.
The catalytic activity of iron pillared montmorillonitic clays in the discoloration of methylene blue aqueous solutions by the heterogeneous photo- Fenton process was studied. Catalysts were prepared using two different-sized aggregate fractions of the clay, ranging below 250 lm and within the range of 250–450 lm. Two calcination temperatures, 400 and 600 �C, were used. The solids were characterized by thermo-gravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption isotherms, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction and iron content. A higher specific surface area and specific pore volume were found for the solid obtained from the finer aggregates of the clay and the lowest calcination temperature. Under photo-Fenton like conditions, this catalyst also displayed the highest catalytic activity which remained practically the same at pHs 3.0 and 5.6 and for H2O2 concentrations in the range from 5 to 20 mM. The observed differences in catalytic performance can be explained on the basis of the catalysts’ iron content and textural properties. Leaching of iron ions from the catalysts could not be detected. Long term stability for dye waste water treatment could thus be expected for these catalysts
