A summary of the resource.
The magnetic and crystal structures of the oxygen-deficient layered perovskite YBaCuFeO[sub 5+[delta]] have been determined with powder neutron diffraction methods. It crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric tetragonal space group P4mm with a = 3.870(2) [angstrom] (at room temperature). Structural motifs of corner-sharing severely elongated CuO[sub 5] (Cu-O[sub eq] = 1.936(2) [angstrom], Cu-O[sub ax] = 2.35(9) [angstrom]) and slightly squashed FeO[sub 5] (Fe-O[sub eq] = 2.03(3) [angstrom], Fe-O[sub ax] = 1.82(9) [angstrom]) square pyramids result in a novel lamellar structure with ordered oxygen defects. Local magnetic moments directed perpendicular to the unique axis ([mu] perpendicular to c, [mu] = 2.51(15) [mu][sub B] at room temperature) appear at the Fe[sup 3+] sites at 442.4(5) K. The magnetic unit cell results by doubling the chemical one along all three crystallographic directions (magnetic propagation vector, k = (1/2,1/2,1/2)). Despite the long separation between successive FeO[sub 2] layers ([approximately]7.7 [angstrom]), the magnetic behavior can be successfully described by a three-dimensional Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian with a critical exponent [beta] = 0.366(8). No evidence of ordering of the Cu sublattice is found on cooling to room temperature.

Metazoan parasites of mammals (helminths) belong to highly divergent animal groups and yet induce a stereotypical host response: Th2-type immunity. It has long been debated whether this response benefits the host or the parasite. We review the current literature and suggest that Th2 immunity is an evolutionarily appropriate response to metazoan invaders both in terms of controlling parasites and repairing the damage they inflict. However, successful parasites induce regulatory responses, which become superimposed with, and control, Th2 responses. Beyond helminth infection, this superimposition of response profiles may be the norm: both Th1 and Th2 responses coexist with regulatory responses or, on the contrary, with the inflammatory Th17 responses. Thus, typical responses to helminth infections may differ from Th2- dominated allergic reactions in featuring not only a stronger regulatory component but also a weaker Th17 component. The similarity of immune response profiles to phylogenetically distinct helminths probably arises from mammalian evolution having hard-wired diverse worm molecules, plus tissue-damage signals, to the beneficial Th2 response, and from the convergent evolution of different helminths to elicit regulatory responses. We speculate that initiation of both Th2 and regulatory responses involves combinatorial signaling, whereby TLR-mediated signals are modulated by signals from other innate receptors, including lectins.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
-Lactam antibiotics are the most widely prescribed antibacterial drugs due to their low toxicity and broad spectrum. Their action is counteracted by di�erent resistance mechanisms developed by bacteria. Among them, the most common strategy is the expression of �-lactamases, enzymes that hydrolyze the amide bond present in all �-lactam compounds. There are several inhibitors against serine-�-lactamases (SBLs). Metallo-�-lactamases (MBLs) are Zn(II)-dependent enzymes able to hydrolyze most �-lactam antibiotics, and no clinically useful inhibitors against them have yet been approved. Despite their large structural diversity, MBLs have a common catalytic mechanism with similar reaction species. Here, we describe a number of MBL inhibitors that mimic di�erent species formed during the hydrolysis process: substrate, transition state, intermediate, or product. Recent advances in the development of boron-based and thiol-based inhibitors are discussed in the light of the mechanism of MBLs. We also discuss the use of chelators as a possible strategy, since Zn(II) ions are essential for substrate binding and catalysis.

A summary of the resource.
<p>A stable enrichment of bacteria capable of metabolizing lactate under methanogenic conditions was obtained from rumen contents. The methanogenic strains associated with lactate utilizers were identified as<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic ">Methanosarcina sp.</em> and<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic ">Methanobacterium sp.</em> The role of propionate as indicator of failure in the methanogenic phase is shown.</p>

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
<p>Se examinaron 100 muestras de productos cárnicos crudos y cocidos con la finalidad de efectuar un estudio cuali y cuantitativode Clostridios sulfito reductores. Las muestras fueron adquiridas en diferentes puestos de venta de la ciudad de Montevideo.</p>
<p>Los productos estudiados fueron embutidos crudos y cocidos. En toas las muestras se efectuó recuento por el número más probable, procediéndose a la posterior clasificación de 100 cepas de Clostridios sulfito reductores provenients del 64% de las muestras.</p>
<p>Los valores estuvieron comprendidos entre 100y> de 500 C. S. R/g en los productos crudos y 5 a 500 en los cocidos.</p>
<p>Se estudiaron 50 muestras con la única finalidad de detectar Clostridium pernfringens encontrándose en el 75%. De los 50 restantes, crudas y cocidas se clasificaron 100 cepas siendo la insidencia la siguiente:</p>
<p>C. perfringes 30%; C. acetobutylicum, 20%; C. bifermentans, 18%; C. sporongenes, 10%; sin clasificar, 22%.</p>
<p>Se discute el valor de los clostridios sulfito reductores como índice de calidad microbiológica, así como el riesgo provocado por la presencia de presuntos C. perfringens tipo A en los productos estudiados.</p>

In this paper, with the help of a nanosecond-long molecular dynamics trajectory, we show that a fully charged protein−DNA system (Zif268-DNA) in a water environment can be simulated with a general force field (GROMOS) if solvation and counterion effects are appropriately represented. A model exhibiting ionic-atmosphere effects on mobile counterions (Tapia, O.; Velázquez, I. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1997, 119, 5934−5938) was implemented. The root-mean-square deviations (rmsds) with respect to X-ray structure for the full complex, the protein, and the 12-base pair consensus sequence were 2.0, 1.95, and 1.35 Å, respectively, while the counterions displayed an rmsd from the initially equilibrated position of 1.2 Å. The mean-square fluctuation with respect to the average structure correlated with temperature factors for the protein and DNA; the agreement in trend is good. The results show that GROMOS87 force field with an appropriate representation of coion (ion atmosphere) effects on the counterions, and corrections for hydrophobicity default in the water to solute C12(Ow,Ow)1/2 parameter, previously used for proteins (Daura X.; Oliva, B.; Querol, E.; Avilés, F. X.; Tapia, O. Proteins 1996, 25, 89−103), are sufficient to obtain a fairly realistic simulation of this protein−DNA complex.

En 1768 se autorizó la planteación de la primer botoica que tuvo esta ciudad, establecida por don José Gabriel Piedracueva. Hasta entonces habían carecido sus moradores de una farmacia donde poder obtener medicamentos para sus dolencias, estando recucidos al uso de yerbas silvestres para sus remedios, a excepción del que podía costearlos de Buenos Aires. Bien que en aquel tiempo había "peste de salud" en la población, computada en unos 1.200 habitantes, a pesar del desaseo, del lodoy de las aguas estancadas en charcos y zanjones, y por consecuencia eran pocas enfermedades que se conocían y ninguna epidémica. La botica de Piedracueva, la primera que tuvieron a su servicio nuestros antepasados , precedió con mucha antelación al establecimiento de la llamada del Rey, que fuera la segunda,. Siguieron a ésta la de Piedrel, la de don José Giró, cirujano del presidio, y sucesivamentehasta el año 10 de este siglo, las de Maltés (Gonzalez Vizcaíno), de Yereguí (1819), de Mordello (1820) y de la Plaza

<p>La enfermedad de Chagas o Tripanosomiasis Americana es una zoonosis cuyo agente etiológico es un protozoario flagelado, el Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) (orden Kinetoplastida, familia Trypanosomatidae). A más de un siglo de su descubrimiento, esta patología compromete la salud de un gran número de habitantes en Latinoamérica, no existiendo hasta el momento fármacos completamente efectivos para su tratamiento. De la quimioteca de agentes anti-T. cruzi de nuestro laboratorio se seleccionaron compuestos pertenecientes a tres diferentes familias de N-óxido de heterociclo-aromático (tres furoxanos, Fx1, Fx2 y Fx3, dos benzofuroxanos, Bfx1 y Bfx2, y dos di-N-óxido de quinoxalinas, Qdo1, Qdo2), además de un nitrofurano (Nf1). Estos productos, son el resultado de optimizaciones químicas dirigidas por la actividad observada. Se escoge además como fármaco de referencia a Nifurtimox, como forma de comparar el comportamiento biológico de T. cruzi frente a los compuestos objeto de este estudio. Trabajando sobre epimastigotes de T. cruzi se realizaron estudios que demostraron o aproximaron al tipo de muerte celular que el parásito expuesto a cada uno de los compuestos estudiados. Primariamente fueron realizados estudios de microscopia óptica-tinción con azul de tripan o microscopía fluorescente-tinción con ioduro de propidio. De estos estudios, se determinó que todos los compuestos a dosis altas, excepto el furoxano Fx1 que por su baja actividad y baja solubilidad no permite extraer conclusiones, promueven una pérdida de la integridad de membrana de T. cruzi que indicarían una muerte por necrosis. Los estudios de muerte celular a bajas dosis, por ensayo de TUNEL, no evidencian muerte de T. cruzi por apoptosis con ninguno de los compuestos estudiados. Particularmente, el nitrofurano Nf1, el furoxano Fx3 y el benzofuroxano Bfx1 inducen en el parásito, previo a su muerte y manteniendo adecuada movilidad, la formación de estructuras citoplasmáticas vacuolares que podrían indicar muerte por autofagia. Para concluir respecto a este punto se realizaron estudios morfológicos por microscopia electrónica de transmisión y experimentos con el inhibidor de autofagia 3-Metiladenina. Estos estudios no son concluyentes, sin embargo las microfotografías del tratamiento con estos 3 compuestos identifican estructuras tipo-autofagosoma. Se implementa el uso de 1H-RMN para determinar el tipo de muerte celular en epimastigotes de T. cruzi de la cepa Y cuantificando las señales correspondientes a metilenos y metilos de los lípidos móviles de las membranas, estudiando además las modificaciones de fosfatidilcolina. Esta es la primera vez que se utiliza dicha técnica para estudios con parásitos y especialmente con T. cruzi. Por otro lado, se estudió el cambio en el perfil metabólico de epimastigotes de T. cruzi tratados con los compuestos de este estudio. Para ello se utilizó la medida, por 1H-RMN, de los metabolitos excretados por el parásito. De acuerdo a estos resultados se decidió identificar un grupo de enzimas que podrían estar involucradas en el mecanismo de acción de los agentes. Por ello, se analizó la inhibición de deshidrogenasas mitocondriales, por ensayo con MTT a tiempos cortos. Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The mixed-chelate copper(II) complexes Casiopeínas® have been tested in several models in vitro and in vivo, showing promising antitumoral results. However, their mechanism of action remains to be defined. Trying to get a deeper insight into their molecular mode of action, further analyses, including gel electrophoresis, atomic force microscopy and circular dichroism were carried out to study their interaction with DNA and some cytoskeleton proteins. Our results revealed that the interaction of Casiopeínas triggers DNA cleavage by a free radical mechanism. The tested complexes showed a differential response to reducing and scavenger agents. Differences on target preference were also evident using double stranded oligonucleotides as sequence competitors. Surprisingly, distamycin A, a minor groove binder, enhanced the Casiopeínas' action on DNA. On the other hand, the tested Casiopeínas produce strong changes in protein structure of tubulin, integrin and fibronectin. All together these results suggest a multiple mode of action for these metal-based drugs. In addition, since it has been proposed that antitumor drugs efficiently interacting with DNA could also show activity against Trypanosoma cruzi, etiologic agent of Chagas disease, we evaluated the activity of these compounds on this protozoan parasite. The tested complexes showed in vitro anti-T. cruzi activity similar to the anti-trypanosomal reference drug Nifurtimox

A summary of the resource.
Inoculation of rabbits with a nonliving anti-Pseudomonas vaccine induced appreciable levels of agglutinating antibodies against strains of P. aeruginosa included or not included in the vaccine. Serum obtained from vaccinated rabbits was able to confer temporary protection to mice against challenge with homologous or heterologous strains of Pseudomonas. When two or three doses of serum were used, all mice survived the challenge dose for more than 48 hr, but some of the animals died 10 days after challenge. When five doses of serum were used, all mice survived this 10-day period, and even 4 months later they did not show any sign of infection. Serum treatment temporarily inhibited Pseudomonas activity and allowed for the activation of the immunogenic mechanisms of the animals. This was corroborated by the fact that mice treated with three doses of serum and surviving the challenge dose for more than 20 days were immune against a second challenge. Anti-Pseudomonas gamma globulin conferred a lower degree of protection against homologous or heterologous strains of Pseudomonas.

<p>To investigate the oocyst-induced cycle with a 21+ day prepatent period, 32 cats were fed 5 x 10(5) to 2 x 10(7) sporulated oocysts of Toxoplasma gondii and necropsied between 4 hr and 41 days thereafter. The presence of the earliest stages in 7 cats was tested in mice. The tissues of 25 cats were studied histologically; 17 were bioassayed by feeding them to cats to determine, by the length of the prepatent period, whether bradyzoites were present. Based on previous studies, a short (3-10 days) prepatent period indicated that bradyzoites were present in an oral inoculum and a long (greater than 21 days) prepatent period indicated the presence of tachyzoites only. Tissues from 14 cats were also bioassayed in mice for the presence of bradyzoites, using their resistance to pepsin as indicator. Six were studied by both methods. Based on these criteria, tachyzoites predominated in extraintestinal organs during the first 14 days after infection. They were found as early as 4 hr in mesenteric lymph nodes where their number reached 10(4) after 6 and 9 days; they were present after 1 day in all levels of the small intestine and after 6 days in the liver, lung, and blood. Bradyzoites were first detected 10 days after oocyst feeding; they predominated by the third week of infection and were present up to 41 days. Enteroepithelial stages were found histologically only in 2 cats, 24 and 41 days after inoculation.</p>

We employ femtosecond laser pulses s80 fs, 1.59 eV, and 80 MHzd to study the optical second-harmonic sSHd response of PbxCd1−xTe ternary alloys sx about 0.2d grown by the vertical Bridgman method. The alloy segregates into a Pb-rich and a Cd-rich phase, the latter dominating the SH response of the ternary alloy by at least two orders of magnitude. Several sample regions show a regular layer-by-layer accommodation of the Pb-rich and Cd-rich phases as seen by a periodic alternation of the alloy’s SH response on a ,10-mm length scale. Furthermore, we employ polarization-resolved SH imaging as well as SH imaging at different azimuthal angles to obtain spatially resolved mappings of the sample, which are sensitive to the composition as well as the growth orientation of the PbxCd1−xTe material system. We observe an azimuthal phase shift of approximately 30° between coherent macroscopic regions sseveral mm2d in the Cd-rich phase of the ternary alloy. We interpret these regions as large area crystalline grains of s111d and s411d crystal orientations and approximately equal composition. Hence, SH imaging is shown to spatially resolve regions of different growth directions within the PbxCd1−xTe sample.

En una primera etapa de la presente tesis se estudi6 el contenido en acidos grasos de diferentes cepas y especies de Spirulina con el fin de tener un perfil de composici6n. Luego se estudiaron diferentes condiciones de cultivo de una misma cepa de Spirulina platensis alterada lisa . Las variaciones en lascondiciones de cultivo estudiadas con el fin de obtener una sobreproducci6n de acido gama linolenico, fueron de indole fisico (fotoperiodo, temperatura y forma de colecta) y de tipo quimico ( diferentes fuentes de mtr6geno, agregado de vitaminas,etc) . Los cultivos se realizaron en un reactor cilindrico y en un reactor "air lift" con el fin de comparar la productividad del acido de interes. EI control de los cultivos se realiz6 mediante parametros de control estandares (clorofila a, peso seco, absorbancia a 540, etc.) y parametros de control electroquimicos (02 disuelto, pH, conductividad y potencial redox). En relaci6n a la colecta, la selecci6n de microalgas de gran tamafio de filamento y el muestreo en la fase terminal favorece en la producci6n de acido gama linolemco. Se encontr6 que condiciones de cultivo en las que se reduce la temperatura y se utilizan fotoperiodos con mayor tiempo de oscuridad mejoran la producci6n de acido gama linolemco. Por otro lado en cuanto a la producci6n de biomasa estas variaciones tienen un efecto nocivo puesto que la reducen .. La modificaci6n quimica que actu6 en favor del aumento del contemdode acido gama linolenico fue el el agregado de un complemento vitamimco .(Dayamineral). En cuanto a los reactores empleados se vio que la producci6n en un reactor "Air lift" es ampliamente superiorque uno cilindrico. En cuanto al control de los cultivos se encontro que la medida de los panimetros electroquimicos es facil de automatizar y da una amplia informacion sobre el estado de los cultivos.
