A summary of the resource.
The enthalpies of formation of 24 sulfur molecules have been calculated employing the CCSDT and CCSD[T] methodologies with Dunning correlation consistent basis sets. The observed tendency is that the CCSD[T] method overestimates the correlation energy when we compare it against the CCSDT method. The average CCSDT ) CCSD[T] difference is 0.42 kcal/mol with deviations larger than 1 kcal/mol for some molecules, such us SO2, SO3, SCO and CS2. This effect difficults the prediction of enthalpies of formation with chemical accuracy (�1 kcal/mol), since, CCSD[T] in general performs better than CCSDT in the calculation of enthalpies of formation. Regarding basis set dependency, we did not appreciate differences between the cc-pVTZ results and the aug-cc-pV(T+D)Z ones. The cc-pVTZ basis set is a good compromise between precision and computational cost.

A summary of the resource.
By means of density functional calculations, we studied the performance of 2 fullerene receptors that contain 3 corannulene or triphenylene pincers. For the first time, we found a receptor that has a small tendency to form intramolecular stacks between the 3 corannulene pincers. After comparing their ability to trap fullerenes, with that of buckycatcher, buckycatcher-II, and the Venus flytrap, we conclude that a record-breaking association constant is expected for the receptor with 3 corannulene pincers. Although triphenylene is less effective than the corannulene units in forming inclusion complexes with C60, the triphenylene-based host is also expected to have a high association constant. Finally, we discuss the theoretical problems found in reproducing the experimental free energy changes in solution for buckycatcher, buckycatcher-II, and the Venus flytrap.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
We investigated the oxidation and sulfurization of the graphenylene monolayer. Although this structure is unstable when it is 100 % covered with oxygen, obtaining a stable form of oxidized graphenylene is possible for 50 % of coverage. In this structure, the oxygen atoms are added on alternating sides of the monolayer, adopting an epoxy-like structure. It is stable up to 1635 K and is a minimum on the potential surface energy. It is an insulator with an indirect band gap of 5.3 eV, a value much larger than the band gap of the pristine graphenylene. Its sulfur counterpart is stable up to 1256 K, presenting a smaller indirect band gap of 3.5 eV.

Context: Finding catalysts that do not rely on the use of expensive metals is one of the requirements to achieve sustainable production. The reactivity of graphene doped with 3d transition metals was studied. All dopants enhanced the reactivity of graphene and performed better than Stone–Wales defects and divacancies, but were inferior to monovacancies. For hydrogenation of doped-monovacancies, Sc, Ti, Cr, Co, and Ni induced more prominent reactivity on the carbon atoms. However, the metals were the most reactive center for V, Mn, and Fe-doped graphene. Cu and Zn turned the four neighboring carbon atoms into the preferred sites for hydrogenation. The addition of oxygen to doped graphene with Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni on a monovacancy revealed a more uniform pattern since the metal, preferred to react with oxygen. However, Sc induced a larger reactivity on the carbon atoms. The affinity of the 3d metal-doped graphene systems towards oxygen was inferior to that observed for single-vacancies. Therefore, vacancy engineering is the most favorable and least expensive method to enhance the reactivity of graphene. Methods: We applied Truhlar’s M06-L method accompanied by the 6-31G* basis sets to perform periodic boundary conditions calculations as implemented in Gaussian 09. The ultrafine grid was employed and the unit cells were sampled employing 100 k-points. Results were visualized employing Gaussview 5.0.1.

Herein, using density functional calculations, we studied the substitutional doping in germanene with B, C, N, O, Al, Si, P, S, Ga, As, and Se. Nitrogen is the element that can be more easily incorporated into the germanene lattice, followed by silicon, carbon, and boron. Almost all dopants were efficient in opening a band-gap. Yet, caution should be taken because this opening strongly depends on the dopant concentration. Carbon and sulfur were the most effective elements for band-gap opening. C-doping generates the lowest effective masses (me*/m0=mh*/ m0=0.09). The equal me and mh values indicate an intrinsic semiconductor behavior, a characteristic shared by the chalcogenides- doped systems. Additionally, we performed a detailed analysis of the preferred disposition of dopants in the germanene lattice. In contrast with the results obtained for graphene, when multiple atoms are introduced in the germanene framework, they do not prefer to be agglomerated, adopting a random disposition, except in the case of sulfur and nitrogen, which favored specific dopant arrangement. Sugar reduction in beverages can contribute to reduce consumption of this nutrient and to improve the health status of the population. However, such reduction can negatively affect consumer perception. Label information can be an effective tool to increase consumer interest in sugar-reduced products. In this context, the aim of the present work was to study the influence of health/hedonic claims on consumer hedonic and sensory perception of sugar reduction in orange/passionfruit nectars under expected and informed conditions. Sugar-reduced orange/passionfruit nectars (20% and 40% reduced in added sugar) featuring different claims (none, health claim or hedonic claim) were evaluated, together with a control product without reduction. Following a between-subjects experimental design, 206 participants evaluated the nectars under two experimental conditions: (a) expected, looking at the packages, and (b) informed, looking at the packages and tasting the nectars. In each experimental condition, participants evaluated their overall liking using a 9-point hedonic scale and answered a check-all-that-apply questions related to the sensory characteristics of the nectars. Results showed that although consumers did not have negative expectations about sugar-reduced nectars, the sensory characteristics of the products were the main determinants of consumers' hedonic reaction towards the nectars. The influence of claims on consumers' perception was modulated by their hedonic sensitivity towards sugar-reduction. The hedonic claim increased overall liking of those consumers with low hedonic sensitivity towards sugar reduction, whereas it had the opposite effect on the most sensitive consumers. Results from the present work suggest that although hedonic claims hold potential for a consumer segment, care must be taken to avoid the generation of unrealistic expectations about the sensory characteristics of sugar-reduced products.

<p>BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated the association between low-level arsenic (As) exposure and cognitive performance among children.</p>
<p>OBJECTIVES: In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the association between low-level As exposure and cognitive performance among 5-8 year-old children in Montevideo, and tested effect modification by As methylation capacity and children's dietary folate intake.</p>
<p>METHODS: We measured total urinary As (UAs) concentrations and the proportion of monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) in the urine of 328 children. Seven subtests of the standardized Woodcock-Muñoz cognitive battery were used to assess cognitive performance, from which, the general intellectual abilities (GIA) score was derived. Total folate intake was estimated from two 24-h dietary recalls. Linear regression analyses were performed. Effect modification was assessed by stratifying at the median %MMA value and tertiles of total folate intake calculated as micrograms (µg) of dietary folate equivalents (dfe). RESULTS: The median UAs was 11.9 µg/l (range = 1.4-93.9), mean folate intake was 337.4 (SD = 123.3) µg dfe, and median %MMA was 9.42 (range = 2.6-24.8). There was no association between UAs and cognitive abilities, and no consistent effect modification by %MMA. UAs was associated inversely with concept formation, and positively with cognitive efficiency and numbers reversed subtest in the lowest folate intake tertile; UAs was also positively associated with sound integration in the second tertile and concept formation in the highest tertile of folate intake. There was no consistent pattern of effect modification by %MMA or folate intake.</p>
<p>CONCLUSION: There was no association between low-level As exposure and general cognitive abilities.</p>

Abstract

Objective: Arsenic is a known childhood neurotoxicant, but its neurotoxicity at low exposure levels is still not well established. The aim of our cross-sectional study was to test the association between low-level arsenic exposure and executive functions (EF) among children in Montevideo. We also assessed effect modification by arsenic methylation capacity, a susceptibility factor for the health effects of arsenic, and by B-vitamin intake, which impacts arsenic methylation. Methods: Arsenic exposure was assessed as the specific gravity-adjusted sum of urinary arsenic metabolites (UAs) among 255 ~ 7 year-old children, and methylation capacity as the proportion of urinary monomethylarsonic acid (%MMA). Arsenic concentrations from kitchen water samples at participants’ homes were assessed. Bvitamin intake was calculated from the average of two 24-hour dietary recalls. EF was measured using three tests from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery – Stockings of Cambridge (SOC), Intra-dimensional/ extra-dimensional shift task (IED), and Spatial Span (SSP). Generalized linear models assessed the association between U-As and EF measures; models were adjusted for age, sex, maternal education, possessions score, Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment Inventory score, season, and school clusters. Additional analyses were conducted to address issues of residual confounding and sample size. A “B-vitamin index” was calculated using principal component analysis. Effect modification by the index and urinary %MMA was assessed in strata split at the respective medians of these variables. Results: The median (range) U-As and water arsenic levels were 9.9 μg/L (2.2, 47.7) and 0.45 μg/L (0.1, 18.9) respectively, indicating that exposure originated mainly from other sources. U-As was inversely associated with the number of stages completed (β = −0.02; 95% CI: −0.03, −0.002) and pre-executive shift errors (β = −0.08; 95% CI: −0.14, −0.02) of the IED task, and span length of the SSP task (β = −0.01; 95% CI: −0.02, −0.004). There was no clear pattern of effect modification by B-vitamin intake or urinary %MMA. Conclusion: Low-level arsenic exposure may adversely affect executive function among children but additional, including longitudinal, studies are necessary to confirm these findings.

Owing to their potential as single-source precursors for compositionally complex materials, there is growing interest in the rational design of multimetallic compounds containing fluorinated ligands. In this work, we show that chemical and structural principles for a materials-by-design approach to bimetallic trifluoroacetates can be established through a systematic investigation of the crystal-chemistry of their monometallic counterparts. A(CF3COO)2·nH2O (A = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Mn) monometallic trifluoroacetates were employed to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach. The crystal-chemistry of monometallic trifluoroacetates was mapped using variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermal analysis. The evolution with temperature of the previously unknown crystal structure of Mg(CF3COO)2·4H2O was found to be identical to that of Mn(CF3COO)2·4H2O. More important, the flexibility of Mnx(CF3COO)2x·4H2O (x = 1, 3) to adopt two structures, one isostructural to Mg(CF3COO)2·4H2O, the other isostructural to Ca3(CF3COO)6·4H2O, enabled the synthesis of Mg-Mn and Ca-Mn bimetallic trifluoroacetates. Mg0.45Mn0.55(CF3COO)2·4H2O was found to be isostructural to Mg(CF3COO)2·4H2O and exhibited isolated metal-oxygen octahedra with Mg(2+) and Mn(2+) nearly equally distributed over the metal sites (Mg/Mn: 45/55). Ca1.72Mn1.28(CF3COO)6·4H2O was isostructural to Ca3(CF3COO)6·4H2O and displayed trimers of metal-oxygen corner-sharing octahedra; Ca(2+) and Mn(2+) were unequally distributed over the central (Ca/Mn: 96/4) and terminal (Ca/Mn: 38/62) octahedral sites.

Alkali−manganese(II) trifluoroacetates were synthesized, and their potential as single-source precursors for the solid-state and solution-phase synthesis of AMnF3 fluoroperovskites (A = Na, K, Rb, Cs) was demonstrated. Assembling Na2Mn2(tfa)6(tfaH), K2Mn2(tfa)6(tfaH)2·H2O, Rb2Mn2(tfa)6·H2O, and CsMn(tfa)3 (tfa = trifluoroacetate) was facilitated by the coordination flexibility of the trifluoroacetato ligand. The synthetic approach described in this investigation provides a starting point to expand the library of fluorinated single-source precursors suitable for solution-phase routes to mixed-metal fluorides.

Three novel bimetallic hybrid crystals featuring rubidium–alkaline-earth metal pairs and trifluoroacetato ligands were synthesized, and their utility as self-fluorinating single-source precursors to the corresponding mixed-metal fluorides was demonstrated. Rb2Mg2(tfa)6(tfaH)2·3H2O, RbCa(tfa)3, and RbSr2(tfa)5 (tfa = CF3COO–; tfaH = CF3COOH) were synthesized in both single-crystal and polycrystalline forms via solvent evaporation. Their crystal structures were solved using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), and chemical purity was confirmed using thermal analysis (TGA/DTA). Metal–oxygen–metal connectivity in Rb2Mg2(tfa)6(tfaH)2·3H2O was restricted to four-metal building blocks. In contrast, RbCa(tfa)3 and RbSr2(tfa)5 were found to be extended inorganic hybrids (Cheetham et al. Chem. Commun. 2006, 0, 4780−4795) exhibiting infinite metal connectivity in three and two dimensions, respectively. Systematic analysis of the coordination modes of the trifluoroacetato ligand revealed its ability to bridge alkali and alkaline-earth metals. Rietveld analysis of powder X-ray diffraction data (PXRD) showed that thermal decomposition of Rb2Mg2(tfa)6(tfaH)2·3H2O and RbCa(tfa)3 under inert atmosphere yielded crystalline RbMgF3 and RbCaF3, respectively. This solid-state transformation occurred without the need for an external fluorinating agent because the trifluoromethyl group acted as a built-in fluorine source. Solid-state and solution thermolysis of Rb2Mg2(tfa)6(tfaH)2·3H2O provided access to the hexagonal and cubic polymorphs of the fluoroperovskite RbMgF3, respectively. Findings reported in this article highlight that bimetallic trifluoroacetates offer unique features from the standpoint of both crystal lattice topology and reactivity.

A summary of the resource.
Risk situations related to brownfield sites, contaminated lands and groups exposed to toxic substances are common in South America. In some of these situations, there is a lack of institutional response to the risks and consequences coupled with a failure to communicate the risks to those affected. Drawing on empirical research in 4 South American communities exposed to lead contamination, we investigated which strategies of risk communication (RC) have been used by researchers to communicate the risks of contamination, and the possible impacts of these strategies. Considering that risk situations of contaminated lands are characterized by uncertainty/strain/controversy, and that their residents are in a collective stress situation because of the physical conditions in their neighborhood and possible impacts on their health, in our study we argue for the need of participative RC in medical geology studies. The participative RC is based on cultural/social elements, trust, open dialogue and collective learning process to implement policies for mitigating risks and for a sustainable future. However, the analysis of these cases suggests that the efforts of RC have focused only on information transmission and public persuasion. We noticed that RC did not promote an open dialogue, or any discussion about the life styles of locals, which gave the impression that research results have not been properly released, and therefore, the general understanding (by assorted actors) is that environmental/health research is not being undertaken for the public good. These experiences endorse a need for a debate about participative RC among medical geology researchers.<br /><br />

El presente trabajo propone una metodología para el aprendizaje de física moderna, principalmente para estudiantes que se encuentran cursando los dos últimos años de bachillerato de enseñanza secundaria. Enfoque constructivista del aprendizaje, en donde los estudiantes tienen un rol activo, son responsables de su proceso de construcción de conocimientos y, en donde los docentes actúan como generadores de situaciones de enseñanza para el aprendizaje. La metodología propuesta se fundamenta en el estudio del estado del arte del aprendizaje de física moderna en la enseñanza secundaria de Uruguay así como del análisis de diferentes fuentes de información: programas de cursos de física moderna de nivel terciario universitario y de formación docente y sus libros de texto más comunes, la opinión de informantes claves, programas de física y química de bachillerato de secundaria y metodologías de enseñanza con un marco conceptual coherente con el constructivismo. La propuesta metodológica incorpora experimentos que requieren responder preguntas desafiantes para estudiantes secundarios. Varios de los experimentos aquí desarrollados fueron implementados en dos cursos de tercero de bachillerato de secundaria, uno de opción científico-matemático y el otro de opción ciencias-biológicas. Los ejecutores de las propuestas fueron los docentes de estos cursos, en el científico-matemático un profesor de Química y en la opción ciencias-biológicas un profesor de Física. El análisis de los resultados de su implementación en el aula muestra que los estudiantes se ven atraídos y motivados por el desafío de responder preguntas a través de la experimentación y aprender con y del otro. Los estudiantes fueron capaces de medir cuidadosamente y analizar los datos obtenidos utilizando planillas de cálculo. Es importante destacar que, la introducción de Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación (PC y teléfonos inteligentes, entre otros dispositivos) para realizar los experimentos propuestos, permite disponer de un laboratorio simple, económico y al alcance de todos. Permitiendo realizar experimentos con distintos grados de Metodología para el aprendizaje de Física Moderna para Educación Secundaria con Química 8 José Di Laccio (2018) sofisticación, que los estudiantes lo pueden realizar en el aula, un parque, en sus propias casas o en el lugar que lo deseen y en el momento que lo prefieran. Varios de los proyectos desarrollados en el contexto de la presente tesis fueron publicados en diversas revistas. Las propuestas educativas desarrolladas aquí, han tenido buena acogida en la comunidad educativa regional, en su presentación en diferentes congresos de enseñanza de las ciencias. Algunas de las actividades experimentales innovadoras de esta tesis, fueron premiadas en la convocatoria para presentar experiencias didácticas de Física organizada por la Universidad Nacional de Tucumán y la Asociación Física Argentina.

Triosephosphate isomerase from Trypanosoma cruzi (TcTIM), an enzyme in the glycolytic pathway that exhibits high catalytic rates of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate- and dihydroxyacetone-phosphate-isomerization only in its dimeric form, was screened against an in-house chemical library containing nearly 230 compounds belonging to different chemotypes. After secondary screening, twenty-six compounds from eight different chemotypes were identified as screening positives. Four compounds displayed selectivity for TcTIM over TIM from Homo sapiens and, concomitantly, in vitro activity against T. cruzi

A summary of the resource.
In a search for antichagasic drugs, 14 new 4-(nitroarylidene)-1,2,6-thiadiazin-3,5-dione 1,1-dioxide derivatives were synthesized and tested in vitro against the epimastigote form of Trypanosoma cruzi and some of them showed important antiprotozoan activity. Attempts to synthesize new 4-(nitroarylidene)-3,5-diamino-1,2,6-thiadiazine 1,1-dioxides were unsuccessful. The antichagasic properties of nitroarylidene-malononitrile and nitroarylidene-cyanoacetamide derivatives, thus obtained, were also tested. The cytotoxic properties against Vero cells of compounds which showed remarkable in vitro antichagasic activity were evaluated. All compounds tested exhibited high toxicity percentages at 100 micrograms/ml. However, compound 3c showed in vitro antichagasic and cytotoxic properties such as nifurtimox at the dose of 10 micrograms/ml.

A 10-year-old mixed breed male cat presented with clinical signs related to chronic orthopaedic pain. Upon physical examination, pain was noted, based on the feline Mus culoskeletal Pain Index (FMPI). An analgesic treatment with a full spectrum cannabis oil (1.8% CBD and 0.8% THC) was proposed for 30 days (0,5 mg/kg based on CBD). The FMPI scale score decreased more than 50%. This case reported a satisfactory outcome for the patient and the owner, although this medication could increase ALT. Given the paucity of literature published to date on the treatment of veterinary species with cannabis-based medications, further clinical and pharmacokinetic studies are necessary to study the safety and efficacy of its use.

In this work, we made a review about the application of Raman spectroscopy for quality control of honey and other food samples. Simultaneously, it was carried out a new research evaluating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) obtained by green synthesis for detection of the antibiotic Oxytetracycline (OTC), through Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). Glucose was used as reducing and capping agent in the formation of AgNPs in alkaline media. The frequencies found, belonging to the antibiotic at 20, 15, 10 and 5 ppb, could be visibly differentiated from those corresponding to honey, being unnecessary to perform any extraction procedure or tedious manipulation of the sample. Theoretical frequencies were obtained by Density Functional Theory calculations and compared with the normal modes from SERS measures, founding an excellent agreement between them. The analysis shows a preference for the adsorption of OTC on silver cluster through oxygen atoms.

Aims Azospirillum brasilense is one of plant growth promoting bacteria used to improve plant growth and grain yield of cereal crops. The level of inoculation response is defined by complex plant-microorganism interactions, many of them still unknown. Thus, we evaluated both agronomic response and microbial ecology of wheat crop under A. brasilense inoculation and nitrogen fertilization at field conditions in order to improve inoculation efficiency. Methods Treatments were: control, nitrogen fertilization and inoculation with 40M and 42M strains. Functional and structural diversity of rhizosphere bacterial communities were evaluated by community-level physiological and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism profiles. Besides, aerial biomass, grain yield and counts of microaerophilic diazotrophic rhizobacteria were determined. Results Plant ontogeny modified the number of culturable microaerophilic diazotrophic rhizobacteria. Although agronomic response did not show differences, plant ontogeny and the agricultural practices modified both physiology and genetic structure of rhizosphere microbial communities. Interestingly, these differences due to the treatments were observed at jointing stage but not at grain-filling stage of wheat. Conclusions Our results demonstrate how different management decisions can change plant- microorganism relationships. While wheat could not show differences between some agricultural treatments, under the soil surface microbial communities could show them.
