In the quest for novel effluent treatment alternatives, the aim of this work was to immobilize Fe(III) complexes in molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to produce efficient Fenton-like heterogeneous catalysts for the green oxidative degradation of the methyl orange (MO) dye pollutant. Different metal complexes bearing commercial and low-cost<br />ligands were assayed and their catalytic activity levels towards the discoloration of MO by H2O2 were assessed. The best candidates were Fe(III)-BMPA (BMPA = di-(2-picolyl)amine) and Fe(III)-NTP (NTP = 3,30,3&rdquo;-nitrilotripropionic acid), displaying above 70% MO degradation in 3 h. Fe(III)-BMPA<br />caused the oxidative degradation through two first-order stages, related to the formation of BMPAFe- OOH and the generation of reactive oxygen species. Only the first of these stages was detected for Fe(III)-NTP. Both complexes were then employed to imprint catalytic cavities into MIPs. The polymers showed catalytic profiles that were highly dependent on the crosslinking agent employed, with N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) being the crosslinker that rendered polymers with optimal oxidative performance (&gt;95% conversion). This work aims to develop a stereoselective enzymatic alternative for the radiosynthesis of [11C](S,S)-S-adenosylmethionine ([11C](S,S)-SAM), a potential PET-CT radiotracer for monitoring particularly aggressive prostate tumors. Conventional synthesis of this compound has been carried out at Uruguayan Center of Molecular Imaging, resulting in an almost racemic mixture 53:47 ratio of (R,S) to (S,S) isomer. Producing the radiotracer in an optically pure form is a requirement for administration to humans and additionally it would enhance diagnostic sensitivity when administered to the patient. The main challenges were designing a biocatalyst capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of the radiotracer synthesis module and achieving the reaction in a very short time due to the rapid decay of 11C. A mutant of E. coli methionine adenosyltransferase (I303V MAT) with enhanced SAM synthesis was cloned, expressed, and immobilized on agarose using an irreversible covalent isourea bond. This immobilized enzyme synthesized [11C](S,S)-SAM from [11C]L-methionine in an automated module, with the labeled methionine produced in situ from [11C]CH3I and L-homocysteine thiolactone. The product was obtained with an enantio and diasteromeric excess greater than 99 % and average conversion of 80 %. The reuse of the immobilized enzyme was studied, showing that after three cycles of reuse the radiosynthesis performance remained unchanged. The present study examines the feasibility of producing hydrogen by dark fermentation using unsterilised cheese whey in a UASB reactor. A lab-scale UASB reactor was operated for more than 250 days and unsterilised whey was used as the feed. The evolution of the microbial community was studied during reactor operation using molecular biology tools (T-RFLP, 16S rRNA cloning library and FISH) and conventional microbiological techniques.<br /><br />The results showed that hydrogen can be produced but in low amounts. For the highest loading rate tested (20 gCOD/L.d), hydrogen production was 122 mL H2/L.d. Maintenance of low pH (mean = 5) was insufficient to control methanogenesis; methane was produced concomitantly with hydrogen, suggesting that the methanogenic biomass adapted to the low pH conditions. Increasing the loading rate to values of 2.5 gCOD/gVSS.d favoured hydrogen production in the reactor. Microbiological studies showed the prevalence of fermentative organisms from the genera Megasphaera, Anaerotruncus, Pectinatus and Lactobacillus, which may be responsible for hydrogen production. HgBrI films give a sensitivity to X-rays of 65 nC/R cm2 for an X-ray beam of 70 KVp, with an electric field of 0.25 V/ m applied to the film. En Uruguay, la utilizaci&oacute;n de feromonas en programas de manejo integrado de plagas se inici&oacute; hace ya varias d&eacute;cadas (finales de la d&eacute;cada de 1970), aunque se ha visto limitada a especies de amplia distribuci&oacute;n e importancia econ&oacute;mica internacional. Existen, sin embargo, plagas locales o regionales con alta incidencia econ&oacute;mica, como es el caso de Pseudaletia adultera, para las cuales no se han identificado sus feromonas, dificultando el desarrollo de estrategias alternativas de control. Pseudaletia adultera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) es un insecto pol&iacute;fago cuyas preferencias alimenticias son las gram&iacute;neas cultivadas y gram&iacute;neas de praderas naturales; se ha reportado la presencia de esta plaga a nivel local (Norte de Argentina, Sur de Brasil, Paraguay y Uruguay). Su importancia econ&oacute;mica radica en la frecuencia de los ataques (en Uruguay pueden presentar de 3 a 4 generaciones al a&ntilde;o) y la magnitud de los mismos, pudiendo ocasionar da&ntilde;os a hojas, tallos, espigas y granos. En la actualidad, para el muestreo de larvas de esta especie se recomienda el uso de red entomol&oacute;gica; el monitoreo de adultos se realiza mediante trampas de luz. El uso de feromonas sexuales en trampas de monitoreo es un m&eacute;todo sensible y espec&iacute;fico para lepid&oacute;pteros, permitiendo detectar adultos incluso en muy bajas densidades, y predecir explosiones poblacionales. We studied the filling state and reloading rate of the Brindley's glands in the haematophagous Chagas disease vector Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae). Quantitative analyses of isobutyric acid, the main secretion component, were carried out with glands dissected from adults under different scenarios of development, number of discharging events and feeding conditions. The alarm-pheromone function of the gland secretion was also assessed in bioassays with conspecific nymphs. Although pharate adults have their glands completely developed, these were not full until imaginal ecdysis. If kept undisturbed, the adults maintained a constant gland load, and discharged about 75% of the gland contents upon one disturbance event. While the glands can be discharged several times, full replenishing was not complete after one week, unless the insect had access to food. The escape behavior of nymphs in bioassays correlated with the chemical analyses, with nymphs showing significant avoidance only toward gland discharges from undisturbed or disturbed/fed adults. Allophylus edulis, commonly called &lsquo;Chal chal&rsquo;, is a member of the Sapindaceae occurring in the Uruguayan and Brazilian native flora. During the phytochemical analysis of two Chal chal specimens from two well-differentiated geographical zones (Assis, S&atilde;o Paulo, Brazil, and Santa Luc&iacute;a, Canelones, Uruguay), considerable amounts of l-quebrachitol were isolated from both samples. The isolation was carried out from the ethanolic twig extracts obtained by maceration of both vegetal samples. Such techniques confirmed that the crystals isolated from sources collected in both countries resulted in the same compound, l-quebrachitol, a natural product not previously reported for this species and one that has been investigated as a sugar substitute for diabetics. From October to December 2005, onion (Allium cepa) plants in seed-production fields in south Uruguay (Canelones) had symptoms suggestive of those caused by Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV; genus Tospovirus, family Bunyaviridae). Symptoms included diamond-shaped lesions on seed stalks (scapes), each 1 to 5 cm long with a necrotic border, green center, and sometimes a second necrotic area in the center of the diamond (2,3). Necrotic lesions with more irregular shape were also associated with diseased plants. In 2006, scape samples with these symptoms were collected from four onion seed crops and assayed for IYSV using an IYSV-specific antiserum (Agdia Inc., Elkhart, IN) in a double-antibody sandwich-ELISA. IYSV was detected in all four onion seed crops monitored in 2006. IYSV incidence, expressed as the number of plants with symptoms, ranged from 87% identity only with IYSV N protein sequences in GenBank. Background The sawfly family Pergidae is best represented in South America, and it is the third largest family in the suborder Symphyta. Tequus is a Neotropical genus that has been reported in association with host plants of the genus Solanum (Solanaceae), with little information about the life history of its members. Tequus schrottkyi (Konow, 1906) was described from Paraguay, without any information about its biology and host plant. New information We report the first record of T. schrottkyi from Uruguay, with information on its host plant and details of its biology. The identification was based on morphology, DNA barcode is provided to allow identification using molecular characters. This sawfly species is associated with Solanum commersonii, a native plant common in Uruguay. Tequus schrottkyi presents several generations between March and July. The larvae feed on leaves and spin a silk cocoon in the soil in which they pupate. The adults exhibit sexual dimorphism, the female being larger than the male and with a different color pattern. The eggs are laid individually in the leaf margins into the leaf tissue. The larvae are unpalatable to a generalist predator, possibly due to defensive compounds sequestered from their host plant, known to contain toxic compounds. Ab-initio calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) have been performed to study systems where a first row transition metal atom is embedded in a rippled graphene due to the existence of an 8-order multivacancy. In addition to these cases, also the inclusion of a zinc atom, with a 3d10 electron configuration, was also studied. Structural distortions and magnetic response for each system were studied. A correlation was found for the magnitude of the rippling and the distortion in the vacancy. The first total synthesis of cyclotetrapeptide versicotide D has been achieved in 21% overall yield using solid phase peptide synthesis and solution cyclization. In addition, in the search for candidates of antimalarial new drugs, one cyclic tetrapeptide analog which differs in the sequence, and four cyclic pentapeptide containing N-methyl amino acids, were prepared. The obtained compounds were evaluated against P. falciparum 3D7. Versicotide D showed low micromolar antiplasmodial activity. A combination of two first-principles electronic structure calculation methods in the framework of density-functional theory was applied to investigate the (001) a-Al2O3 surface reconstruction and its structural, electronic, magnetic, and hyperfine properties when doped with Cd impurities at different depths from the surface. The SIESTA approach was used to obtain the equilibrium positions of all atoms and the Full-Potential Augmented Plane Wave plus local orbital (FP-APW+lo) method was employed in order to obtain the electronic structure at these equilibrium positions and all the other physical properties. For the most stable (001) a-Al2O3 surface, we have demonstrated that the inclusion of the Cd atom at substitutional Al sites at and near the surface produces a ground state magnetic behavior. The largest principal component V33 of the electric-field-gradient (EFG) tensor at the Cd atom localized just above the a-Al2O3 terrace showed the same [001] orientation and a dominating p-character as Cd does when it is localized at bulk a-Al2O3, but exhibits an anomalous V33 magnitude four times larger than its value in bulk. Just below the surface, the non symmetric structural relaxation around the Cd impurity is responsible for the strong change in the asymmetry, magnitude, and orientation of the EFG tensor. The changes in the hyperfine properties have been correlated with the modifications observed on the electronic charge density at the different Cd sites and on the p-states of the Cd-projected partial density of states. Accordingly, the significant differences on the hyperfine parameters showed for different depths suggest that 111Cd probe-atoms used in Perturbed c&ndash;c Angular Correlation experiments could be used for evaluating geometrical and electronic distortions, particularly for positions quite close to the reconstructed surface, as well as contributing to studies of growth, adsorption, and diffusion of atoms in oxide surfaces and interfaces.
