Manganese catalysts supported by impregnation onto honeycomb monoliths extruded from commercial clay, previously coated with aluminium-pillared clay, were prepared and tested in the total combustion of propane and acetone. Samples characterization included chemical analysis, nitrogen physisorption, electron microscopies (SEM-EDS, HAADF and EELS), XRD, TPR and O2-TPD experiments. The active phase (around 5 wt%), consisting of MnO2 particles as majority phase, with homogeneous size and shape, that tends to concentrate in some regions of the surface of the clay support, exhibited high efficiency to oxidize the two model VOCs investigated and stability in severe reaction conditions. Light-off temperatures as low as 225 and 330 °C were found for the oxidation of acetone and propane respectively. The better performance observed in comparison to the monoliths without pillared clay was attributed to the higher active phase loading. Differences found as function of the VOC's nature and concentration were related to the different oxidation mechanisms proposed in literature, either just Mars-van Krevelen or this with also Eley-Rideal contribution, for acetone and propane respectively. These results combined with the intrinsic advantages of the honeycomb monolithic design open up new possibilities for using pillared clays as catalytic support in VOCs oxidation under more affordable conditions.

Background <br /><br />Radiosynovectomy is a type of radiotherapy used to relieve pain and inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis. In this study, 188-Rhenium (188Re) colloids were characterized by physical and biological methodologies. This was used to assess which parameters of the kit formulation would be the basis in the development of a more effective radiopharmaceutical for synovectomy. Intraarticular injection in knees of rabbits assessed cavity leakage of activity.<br />Methods<br /><br />The physical characteristics of tin (Sn) and sulphur (S) colloids were determined to assess the formulation with suitable properties. Particles were grouped in three ranges for analyzing their distribution according to their number, volume and surface. The ideal particle size range was considered to be from 2 to 10 microns. Membrane filtration and laser diffraction characterization methodologies were used.<br />Results<br /><br />While membrane filtration could give misleading data, laser diffraction proportions more reliable results. The Sn colloid showed a better distribution of particle volume and surface than S colloid, in the 2 to 10 microns range. The 188Re-Sn colloid was obtained with a radiochemical purity higher than 95% after 30 minutes of autoclaving. While Sn colloid kit stability was verified for 60 days, the 188Re-Sn preparation was stable in the first 24 hrs. No significant intrabatch variability (n = 3) was detected. Biodistribution and scintigraphic studies in rabbits after intraarticular injection showed relevant activity only in knee, being 90% at 48 hours.<br />Conclusion<br /><br />The 188Re-Sn colloid is easy to prepare, is stable for 24 hours and shows minimal cavity leakage after intraarticular injection into rabbit knees, suggesting this radiotherapeutical agent has suitable physical properties for evaluation for joint treatment in humans.<br /><br />

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Radiosynovectomy is a therapy used to relieve pain and inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis and related diseases. In this study three 188Re particulate compounds were characterized according to their physico-chemical properties and their biological behavior in rabbits. The results were compared in order to establish which was the radiopharmaceutical that better fits the requirements of this kind of radiotherapy.

A summary of the resource.
La4BaCu5−xCoxO13+δ system was successfully synthesized by a modified Pechini route in air. A structural phase transition is observed along the series, from tetragonal ordered structure for 0 ≤ x ≤ 2 to a rhombohedral disordered perovskite for x = 5. A TEC value of 17.3 × 10−6 K−1, was found by High-Temperature X-ray Diffraction (HT-XRD) in air for La4BaCu3Co2O13+δ. The conductivity of La4BaCu3Co2O13+δ increases with temperature reaching a maximum of 778 S cm−1 at 405 °C in air followed by a decrease with further increase in temperature with values of 600–664 S cm−1. The cathode polarization resistance of La4BaCu3Co2O13+δ evaluated in air at 750 °C is 0.34 Ω cm2 with an activation energy of 1.65 eV. These results demonstrate the possible use of La4BaCu5−xCoxO13+δ materials as cathode for Intermediate-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (IT-SOFC).

Se analizaron 362 sueros de novillos Hereford y sus cruces, procedentes de casi todos los departamentos del Uruguay, mediante las reacciones de Sabin y Feldman y de hemoaglutinación indirecta para toxoplasmosis. Inactivándolos a 60ºC. 30 minutos, los máximos títulos obtenidos fueron 1:16 y 1:64, respectivamente. Estos títulos no son considerados específicos. Se alimentaron dos gatos seronegativos a Toxoplasma con las muestras de 20 gr. de carne de cada uno de los 129 novillos analizados con la reacción S & F. Se incluyeron muestras de músculos de los cuatro novillos reaccionantes al S & F. No excretaron ooquistes toxoplasmáticos ni se seroconvirtieron después de transcurridos 16 días desde la ingesta supuestamente infectante. Discutiéndose estos resultados, junto con los obtenidos en otros países, se concluye que la carne de novillo no es fuente importante de infección toxoplásmica.

<p>Despite its many documented advantages, the<br />QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged,<br />and Safe) sample preparation approach has<br />problems with a few unstable pesticides, partly<br />due to the exothermic reaction generated by the<br />use of anhydrous magnesium sulfate (anh. MgSO4) during extraction. These pesticides also tend to be difficult to analyze by GC/MS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature during the extraction process in a revised version of AOAC Official MethodSM 2007.01 using anh. MgSO4 ≥99% (fine powder) or ≥97% (granular) purity, and the use of an ice bath for particular unstable pesticides of interest (chlorothalonil, captan, captafol, folpet,<br />and the degradation products cis-1,2,3,6-<br />tetrahydrophthalimide and phthalimide). Recoveries of 38 representative pesticides were measured in limes and broccoli at different extraction conditions by LC/MS/MS and low-pressure GC/MS/MS. Results showed that the difference in temperature when using ≥99% versus ≥97% purity anh. MgSO4 was 6–9°C, which did not lead to significant differences in recoveries. The use of an ice bath aided recovery for some of the analytes in broccoli, but no significant differences were observed for limes, which already provided greater stability of the base-sensitive analytes due to acidity of the matrix.</p>

<p>In this study, optimization, extension, and validation of a streamlined, qualitative and quantitative multiclass, multiresidue method was conducted to monitor >100 veterinary drug residues in meat using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS). Optimization centered on extensive ruggedness evaluation of the method. Various clean-up sorbents were tested and the amount of co-extractives were weighed, matrix effects were measured using post-column infusion of representative analytes, the effect of extract dilution before injecting was studied, and analyte recoveries and reproducibilities were determined. In order to extend our previous method, more drug analytes were added that possessed a wider range of chemical properties, and a re-appraisal of different types of C18 in dispersive solid-phase extraction clean-up and mobile phases in UHPLC–MS/MS was done. Ultimately, end-capped C18 and post-column infusion of ammonium formate as an ionization enhancer for the late-eluting anthelmintics were found to give improved qualitative results for greater analytical scope. A multi-day, multi-analyst validation demonstrated that the final method is suitable for screening of 113 analytes, identifying 98 and quantifying (recoveries between 70–120% and RSD < 25%) 87 out of the 127 tested drugs at or below US regulatory tolerance levels in bovine muscle</p>

We have isolated a cDNA from the fox-tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis that encodes EmSkip, a novel member of the SNW/SKIP family of transcriptional coregulators. EmSkip displays signiWcant amino acid sequence homologies to already known members of the protein family and contains all the characteristic amino acid residues at their corresponding positions. RT-PCR experiments showed that the EmSkip encoding gene, emskip, is expressed in the Echinococcus larval stages metacestode and protoscolex during an infection of the intermediate host. By yeast two-hybrid analyses, EmSkip was found to be capable of forming homodimers in vivo. Furthermore, EmSkip was found to interact with EmSmadA and EmSmadB, two previously identiWed TGF-�/BMP signal transducers of E. multilocularis, indicating a role of this protein in TGF-� signaling processes in the parasite. In view of the role played by SNW/SKIP proteins in splicing mechanisms and intracellular signaling, the data presented herein should facilitate the identiWcation of Echinococcus factors involved in such processes. 2005 Elsevier Inc. The use of computers for predicting the structures and properties of bio- molecules has closely paralleled computer development since the 1950s, and has been one of the core areas of theoretical or computational chemistry for the past 30 years. Initially, the focus was on force-field based methodologies for studying the structures, dynamics and interactions of biomolecules as such, and the development of accurate models for the main biological solvent, water. With the emergence of accurate quantum chemical techni- ques suitable for studying (from a quantum chemistry perspective) large systems, density functional theory entered the stage in the 1990s as the key approach for investigating enzymatic mechanisms or properties and re- actions of small, but biologically relevant, molecules. The combined use of these tools, so-called QM/MM and lately QM/MM-MD techniques enables precise descriptions of biological phenomena and reactions.

Pesticides can be found in bee products as they are usually employed to protect the beehive, but they can also reach the hive due to environmental contamination. These contaminants could be present in processed foods. One of the most common and consumed comfitures based in bee products are honey and propolis candies, for which no analytical method has yet been developed. This work presents the development of an ethyl acetate based extraction method followed by dispersive clean up using Primary and Secondary Amine (PSA) plus Graphitized Carbon Black (GCB) with Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) determination for pesticide residue monitoring candies containing honey and propolis from the Mercosur region. Sixteen pesticides found in bee products as well as three pesticide metabolites of toxicological significance were evaluated including acaricides and insecticides (pyrethroids, organophosphates and some organochlorines). The method was validated, with a LOQ of 0.01 mg/kg for most analyzed pesticides, showing a recovery rate of 70-120% with <20% RSD. Real samples from the Mercosur countries were analyzed. Coumaphos and chlorpyrifos residues were detected in most of them. From these findings a preliminary toxicological evaluation of coumaphos via admissible daily intake (ADI) estimation was conducted.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a destructive disease of cereals crops worldwide and a major food safety concern due to grain contamination with trichothecenes and other mycotoxins. Fusarium graminearum, a member of the Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC) is the dominant FHB pathogen in many parts of the world. However, a number of other Fusarium species, including other members of the FGSC, may also be present for example in Argentina, New Zealand, Ethiopia, Nepal, Unites States in cereals such as wheat and barley. Proper species identification is critical to research aimed at improving disease and mycotoxin control programs. Identification of Fusarium species is are often unreliable by traditional, as many species are morphologically cryptic. DNA sequence-based methods offer a reliable means of species identification, but can be expensive when applied to the analyses of population samples. To facilitate identification of the major causative agent of FHB, this work describes an easy and inexpensive method to differentiate F. graminearum from the remaining species within the FGSC and from the other common Fusarium species causing FHB in cereals. The developed method is based on a PCR-RFLP of the transcription elongation factor (TEF 1-α) gene using the restriction enzyme BsaHI.

Hydrogen titanate (H2Ti3O7) and TiO2-B polymorph are potential surfaces identified experimentally in the last years, which need to be analyzed. To study their performance as surfaces for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC), a set of dye adsorption configurations were evaluated on them, as model dye the small and organic catechol molecule was used. We have calculated adsorption geometry, energy, electronic transfer from dye to semiconductor adsorbent and frontier orbitals by means of density functional theory (DFT). Results show that vacancy-like defected H2Ti3O7 (100) and TiO2-B (100) surfaces present favorable adsorption energies. Finally, an adequate energy level alignment make both surfaces prone to be adequate for direct electron transfer upon excitation, from catechol to the conduction band of the semiconductors, with bands located in the Visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Additionally, the band structure alignment indicates an increase in the open circuit voltage, in reference to I2/I3− redox pair potential. All these characteristics make hydrogen titanate (H2Ti3O7) and TiO2-B polymorph promising for DSSC applications.

A convenient two-step procedure for the synthesis of primary (Z)-allyl amines, (Z)-homoallyl amines [(Z)-but-3-enylamines], and (Z)-pent-4-enylamines using the Wittig reaction was achieved. The use of nonstabilized ylides from triphenylphosphonium salt, potassium salt, and apolar solvent produced (Z=E)- geometric isomer ratios generally greater than 1.6. The amine moiety was masked using a phtalimide group that was removed successfully in the last step of the process in two different conditions, NH2NH2=EtOH=rt or CH3NH2=EtOH=rt. However, in some cases, reduction of the C¼C double bond in the deprotection with hydrazine was concomitantly observed.

A series of indazole N1-oxide derivatives has been spectroscopically studied in solution using 1H, 13C, and 15N NMR based on pulsed field gradient selected PFG 1HAX (X=13C and 15N) gHMQC and gHMBC experiments. Some indazoles were prepared using a new methodology to compare its spectral and structural data with the indazole N1-oxide parent compounds. The 13C resonances of the indazole N1-oxide carbon 3 and 7a demonstrate the N-oxide push-electron capability. The 15N resonances of the indazole N-oxide, nitrogen 1, are near to 30 ppm more shielded than the corresponding values in the indazole heterocycle (deoxygenated form). Moreover, the structures of one indazole and one indazole N-oxide were unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The solid state structures were contrasted with the theoretical ones obtained in vacuo at different calculus level. The aromaticity of the derivatives was studied analyzing the HAH coupling constants of indazole’s aromatic hydrogens and measuring CAC distances in the solid state. The fragmentation that takes place in EI/MS was gathered for all the indazole N-oxide derivatives and the general fragmentation pattern analyzed.

Background Uruguay, a South American country of 3.4 million inhabitants that has already banned tobacco advertising, prohibited such terms as light, mild and low-tar and required graphic warnings covering 80% of cigarette packs, is considering the imposition of plain, standardised packaging.
Methods We conducted an experimental choice-based conjoint analysis of the impact of alternative cigarette package designs on the risk perceptions of 180 adult current Uruguayan smokers. We compared plain packaging, with a standardised brand description and the dark brown background colour required on Australian cigarette packages, to two controls: the current package design with distinctive brand elements and colours; and a modified package design, with distinctive brand elements and the dark brown background colour. Graphic warnings were also varied.
Results Plain packaging significantly reduced the probability of perceiving the stimulus cigarettes as less harmful in comparison to the current package design (OR 0.398, 95% CI 0.333 to 0.476, p<0.001) and the modified package design (OR 0.729, 95% CI 0.626 to 0.849, p<0.001).
Conclusions Plain packaging enhanced the perceived risk of cigarette products even in a highly regulated setting such as Uruguay. Both the elimination of distinctive brand elements and the use of Australia’s dark brown background colour contributed to the observed effect.
