Two-dimensional materials as electrodes have significant potential in energy storage and conversion and can address the issues related to battery technologies. Accordingly, first-principles calculations were executed to search for the best possible anode material for Li/Na ion batteries. Three families of dual-doped graphene (DDG) including Be–B, BeN, and BeO were studied because it is easier to synthesize DDG instead of its mono-doped counterpart. Among them, Be–B DDG was found to be the most promising since it can cause a massive increase in the adsorption of Li (2.33 eV, by 3.1 times) and Na (2.24 eV, by 4.3 times) at the vdW-DF/DZP level of theory. The integration of these ions caused the structures to become metallic, resulting in good electronic conductivity, which is essential for anode materials. Furthermore, Be–B DDG exhibited an average open circuit voltage of 2.34 V (1.3* V) and 1.82 V (1.02* V) for Li and Na, respectively, when the energy of the isolated gas-phase (* represents the energy of one atom taken from the bulk) is used for Li and Na. This modest average open circuit voltage of 1.3* V for Li is in the range of that of the most commonly used graphite-Li (0.11 V) and TiO2-Li (1.5–1.8 V). Moreover, the negligible percentage change in the plane of Be–B DDG during the intercalation of Li/Na ensured good cyclic stability. Additionally, the exceptional storage capacities of 2334 mA h g−1 for Li and 1012 mA h g−1 for Na with an open circuit voltage of 0.23* V and 0.25* V, respectively, shows that Be–B DDG has potential as a remarkable anode material for LIBs and SIBs. En ésta tesis se trabajó sobre la fitoquímica del género Baccharis L. (Asteraceae) como modelo de PAMs, colectando in natura 19 especies nativas de Uruguay, del sur de Brasil y del nordeste de Argentina: B. articulata, B. crispa, B. cultrata, B. dentata, B. dracunculifolia, B. genistifolia, B. gibertii, B. gnaphalioides, B. linearifolia, B. microdonta, B. milleflora, B. ochracea, B. palustris, B. phyteumoides, B. punctulata, B. spicata, B. tridentata, B. trimera y B. uncinella. Para todas ellas se describió su composición química volátil (volatiloma) y se identificaron los principales metabolitos producidos por cromatografía gaseosa convencional y acoplada a espectrometría de masa (GC-FID y GC-MS). Para el estudio, se tomaron en cuenta diferentes variables que inciden directamente sobre la composición como: metodología de extracción (B. uncinella), origen geográfico de las poblaciones vegetales (B. trimera), estacionalidad (B. dracunculifolia y B. microdonta) y género de las plantas (masculino/femenino; B. articulata, B. crispa, B. dracunculifolia, B. linearifolia, B. spicata y B. tridentata). En particular, sobre éste último aspecto se trabajó en caracterizar el perfil de emisión volátil de ambos sexos empleando para ello cromatografía gaseosa/olfatometría (GC-O) y cromatografía gaseosa enantioselectiva (eGC). Para la especie B. trimera (―carqueja‖) se realizó un detallado estudio de la composición del aceite esencial, fraccionando el mismo por cromatografía en columna (CC) y estudiando la composición de cada una de las fracciones por GC-MS. Adicionalmente, se realizó un estudio de las características morfoanatómicas e histoquímicas de una población de referencia de B. trimera, lo que permitió su caracterización biotípica. Desde el aceite esencial de ésta especie fue aislado por CC su compuesto mayoritario acetato de carquejilo, y mediante reacciones químicas específicas fueron obtenidos sus derivados semi-sintéticos: carquejol, carquejifenol, carquejona, iso-carquejona y óxido de carquejol (los últimos tres no reportados anteriormente en la bibliografía). En todos los casos los productos fueron caracterizados por medio de técnicas espectroscópicas de resonancia magnética nuclear (RMN), infrarrojo (IR), ultravioleta (UV), dicroísmo circular (DC), Raman y espectrometría de masa (MS). También fue realizado un estudio de química computacional para predecir las propiedades moleculares del acetato de carquejilo, carquejol y carquejifenol, empleando la teoría del funcional de densidad (DFT). Fitoquímica de Baccharis spp. (Asteraceae): Metabolitos Secundarios, Semi-Síntesis y Bioactividad Manuel Minteguiaga, 2019 15 Para la especie B. palustris fue determinado por diferentes técnicas espectroscópicas la presencia de poliacetilenos en su volatiloma. Consecuentemente, fueron identificados los siguientes compuestos 1-nonen-3,5-diino, 1,7(Z)-nonadien-3,5-diino, 1,7(E)-nonadien-3,5-diino y 3,5-nonadiino; así como los (E)/(Z) ésteres de lachnophyllum. Para los tres primeros compuestos es su primer reporte en la literatura como productos naturales. Finalmente, se estudió la bioactividad de extractos y compuestos semi-sintéticos mediante técnicas in-vitro: antiradicalaria (metodología del DPPH) y neutralizante del veneno de serpientes del género Bothrops sp. (―yaras‖) (actividad alexitérica). Los extractos de B. dracunculifolia, B. punctulata y B. trimera demostraron la mejor actividad de captura del DPPH, en tanto la carquejona y el (Z)-éster de lachnophyllum exhibieron los mejores resultados de neutralización de los venenos. The anisidine test a measure of secondary oxidation products, is considered useful in that it shows the past history of the oil. Effects of accelerated storage test on the anisidine and peroxide values of commercially samples were studied. The results obtained indicate that the anisidine value is a good method to predict storage stability of fats. Some processing steps in producing edible fats and oils were studied. Bleaching clay performs decomposition of oxidation products and this effect alone would reduce the peroxide value. Comparative studies were undertaken to determine the effects of bleaching on the anisidine value. Analysis of damaged oils before and after deodorization showed that little reduction of anisidine value occurred. In citrus plants, leaves play a central role in the metabolic pathway triggering the flflowering induction process. To investigate the changes during this transition, a liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis of the leaf profifiles of 20 compounds (17 polyphenols, two limonoids, and one furanocoumarin), in bearing and non-bearing branches arising from four different mandarin genotypes, was performed. El conocimiento de las floraciones es útil para predecir el comportamiento de las colonias de Apis mellifera (abeja de la miel). El objetivo fue determinar las características florísticas desde el punto de vista apícola de un bosque serrano en Uruguay. Realizamos ocho visitas en tres sitios aledaños a la colmena: a 10-20 m, 500 m y 1500 m de distancia. En la primera visita determinamos especies, familias, origen (nativo o exótico) y frecuencia de cada taxón. En visitas posteriores, censamos cuáles estaban florecidas (presencia o ausencia). Asignamos a cada especie un valor de uno a cinco para la abundancia (A) y la duración de la floración (P), durante dos años. Utilizamos el índice de Shannon para medir la diversidad florística. Se utilizó un modelo lineal generali-zado para analizar la floración a través de las variables respuesta: presencia de floración en invierno, primavera, verano y otoño, así como duración de la floración. Calculamos un índice de Shannon de 3,6, lo que indica una alta biodiversidad. Luego correlacionamos los hallazgos de la prospección con datos de la literatura sobre la ocurrencia de cada especie en estudios melisopalinológicos en mieles maduras e inmaduras. Por último, defi-nimos el término flora convertible para identificar los recursos florales cuyo polen se almacena cuando no hay ninguna flora disponible. Estas fueron Lithraea brasiliensis, Baccharis articulata, Baccharis trimera, Blepharo-calyx salicifolius, Eugenia uniflora, Colletia Paradoxa, Oxalis sp., Scutia buxifolia, Jodina rhombifolia, Aloysia gratissima, para las temporadas de primavera y otoño (P<0.05). A flow injection method is proposed for the determination of phenylephrine hydrochloride in pharmaceutical dosage forms. The method involves the use of on-line solid-phase extraction by means of a microcolumn containing Dowex 50W X8 ion-exchange resin for the separation of the analyte prior to colour development and spectrophotometric detection in the visible region. The influence of preconcentration flow, preconcentration pH and elution volume was studied. The method exhibits appropriate linearity (r(2) = 0.9999) which was proved statistically by means of the "F"-test. When applied to commercial samples containing several active ingredients and excipients, a significant reduction of interferences was found. A flow-injection method is proposed for the determination of salbutamol. The method involves the condensation of salbutamol with 4-aminoantipyrine in the presence of hexacyanoferrate (III) in alkaline medium, producing a coloured quinoneimide that was detected absorptiometrically at 500 nm. The values of four variables (two reactor lengths and two reagent concentrations) were optimised by means of the sequential simplex method and their influence studied in univariant way. Due to variations in the production levels, a fullscale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for post-treatment of tannery wastewater was exposed to low and high ammonia load periods. In order to study how these changes affected the N-removal capacity, the microbiology of the reactor was studied by a diverse set of techniques including molecular tools, activity tests, and microbial counts in samples taken along 3 years. The recover capacity of the biomass was also studied in a lab-scale reactor operated with intermittent aeration without feeding for 36 days. The results showed that changes in the feeding negatively affected the nitrifying community, but the nitrogen removal efficiencies could be restored after the concentration stress. Species substitution was observed within the nitrifying bacteria, Nitrosomonas europaea and Nitrobacter predominated initially, and after an ammonia overload period, Nitrosomonas nitrosa and Nitrospira became dominant. Some denitrifiers, with nirS related to Alicycliphilus, Azospirillum, and Marinobacter nirS, persisted during long-term reactor operation, but the community fluctuated both in composition and in abundance. This fluctuating community may better resist the continuous changes in the feeding regime. Our results showed that a nitrifying–denitrifying SBR could be operated with low loads or even without feeding during production shut down periods. The state-of-the-art involves the supporting of urea/thiourea optical discrete anion sensors into a polymeric scaffold. Nevertheless, high levels of selectivity are difficult to achieve, since the colorimetric/fluorometric response is also quenched by other anions such as dihydrogenphosphate. In this work we present, for the first time, the design of a polymeric optical fluoride chemosensor by using the anion-imprinting technique. First, four polymerizable anion receptors containing a urea-type binding site and different fluorophores as signaling units were prepared. One of them (1-(4-vinylphenyl)-3-(1-naphtyl)-urea) shows the most intense fluorescence emis sion in solution, exhibiting high optical sensitivity only for F– and H2PO4– . The electronic and structural features behind the optical response and anion affinity were elucidated through experimental and computational tools. To enhance the optical sensitivity and selectivity, a fluoride-imprinted polymeric optical sensor was prepared starting from this soluble sensor. The fluorescent emission is 13 times higher for the polymer and it is switched off only in the presence of fluoride, while for the rest of the anions, including H2PO4– , there was almost no optical response. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fluoride-imprinted polymeric optical sensor reported so far. Recent empirical evidence suggests that gut dysbiosis is one of the negative health outcomes potentially associated with chronic consumption of some food additives. In this context, the present study aimed at analyzing the disclosure of food additives associated with gut dysbiosis in the labels of products commercialized in the Uruguayan market. A cross-sectional survey of packaged products commercialized in nine supermarkets was conducted between August and September 2021. All packaged processed and ultra-processed products available in each data collection site were surveyed using a cellphone app. The information available on the labels was manually extracted and the disclosure of food additives was analyzed using a computer assisted approach. Results showed that 38.1% of the products disclosed at least one food additive associated with gut dysbiosis. Disclosure was most frequent in ice-cream and popsicles, beverages, meat products and analogues, desserts, and fats, oils and fat and oil emulsions. Potassium sorbate was the individual additive associated with gut dysbiosis most frequently disclosed on the labels, followed by mono- and di-glycerides of fatty acid, sucralose, carboxymethylcellulose, acesulphame potassium, carrageenan, and sodium benzoate. These food additives frequently cooccurred and network analysis enabled the identification of patterns of co-occurrence. Taken together, results from the present work suggest the need to conduct additional research to assess the intake of food additives associated with gut dysbiosis at the population level, as well as to evaluate potential synergistic effects of food additives. Interest in understanding how foods affect consumers’ perceived wellbeing has grown in the last decade due to the increasing need to modify dietary patterns. Considering that wellbeing is a broad concept that lacks of a unique definition, in order to use and measure this concept it is necessary to explore how consumers understand it, particularly in the context of food consumption. The aim of the present work was to investigate consumers’ perception of wellbeing in a food-related context using an exploratory qualitative approach. A study was carried out with 120 Uruguayan participants using three qualitative techniques: word association, open-ended questions and free listing. Wellbeing in a food-related context was strongly associated with physical health. The expected effects of foods on wellbeing were mainly related to non-communicable diseases such as high cholesterol levels, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. However, hedonic and emotional aspects of food consumption were also salient for consumers perceived wellbeing. The information gathered in this study can contribute to the development of scales for measuring consumer perceived wellbeing when consuming foods. The aims of the present work were to study motives underlying Uruguayan consumers’ food choice behaviour and to study the consumption frequency of some selected food items. A modification of the Food Choice Questionnaire and a food frequency questionnaire was administered to a group of 200 Uruguayan consumers. Feeling good and safety, sensory appeal and health and nutrient content were rated as the most important factors, while familiarity was rated as the least important. Using hierarchical cluster analysis, three clusters with different choice patterns were identified. Frequency of consumption of fruits, vegetables, milk and dairy products, and whole cereals, increased as the importance attributed to health and nutrition increased; consumption of fatty foods decreased. Food donation has expanded globally and has become a common form of food assistance in emerging countries. However, research on food donation experiences in these settings is still scarce. Purpose In this context, the objectives of the present work were as follows: (i) to explore the views of Uruguayan stakehold ers on food donation as a strategy to reduce food waste, (ii) to identify barriers and enablers for food donation in Uruguay, and (iii) to explore the organizational characteristics of Uruguayan food banks. Methods A qualitative approach based on two data collection strategies was used: documentary content analysis of ofcial governmental documents and in-depth semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders related to food waste and food donations in Uruguay. Results Food donation emerged as a central strategy for food waste reduction in the view of Uruguayan stakeholders, mainly because it was perceived as an efcient strategy to reduce food insecurity. The complexity of food donation was acknowledged by Uruguayan stakeholders and who identifed several barriers for its implementation related to economic considerations, the characteristics of the donated products, legal and commercial considerations, and organizational characteristics of food banks. Conclusion Although most barriers were aligned with results from previous studies conducted in developed countries, some specifcities to the Uruguayan context were also identifed. Clear and detailed legal frameworks to ensure that the donated products reach the target population along with nutritional requirements for the foods to be donated were deemed necessary. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of food education seminars on the introduction of bread with OPN flour added to public school meals in Brazil. A product-specific emoji list, facial hedonic scale, and word association (WA) were used. To evaluate the effects of the food education intervention, seminars were applied at only one of the schools. One school was selected as an intervention group (IG) (n = 398) and the other one as a control group (CG) (n = 441). The food education seminar revealed itself to be an essential strategy for willingness to try and acceptance of the bread. The product-specific emoji scale helped to understand children's emotions regarding the new food. The WA task brought a holistic insight into the evaluation of bread by children, confirming the hedonic data. The introduction of new food in school meals is positively influenced by food literacy, and all sensory evaluations corroborate this. The plantation and natural forests of South America have been highly impacted by native and exotic pests in recent decades. The interaction of emerging invasive pests, climate change, and timber markets will define the region’s forests, with significant but uncertain ecological changes and economic losses expected. The Southern Cone Forest Health Group (SCFHG), a joint ad hoc initiative run by forest health professionals from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay, aims to strengthen relationships between the forestry industry, stakeholders, academia, and government agencies across the region. Here, we highlight regional strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities to address forest health issues in the region. A regional approach with a strong communication network is relevant for future actions. In the current global scenario of invasive species and climate change, the implementation of practices that incorporate the resilience of forest ecosystems and sustainable management needs to be prioritized in forest policy across the region. Understanding that pests and pathogens do not recognize borders, we call on governments and organizations to support joint actions with agreements and adequate resources to enhance our regional capabilities. La formación de peroxinitrito en la mitocondria está favorecida por el suministro constante de radical superóxido a partir de la cadena de transporte electrónico mitocondrial y la difusión de óxido nítrico que alcanza a este organelo. La mayor parte de este trabajo fue realizado en un modelo de partículas submitocondriales (PSM), en presencia de succinato y un dador de óxido nítrico, el NOC-‐7, de forma tal de estudiar la formación y cuantificar al peroxinitrito formado por una multiplicidad de métodos incluyendo fluorescencia, quimioluminiscencia y análisis inmunoquímicos. Mientras que todas las sondas que fueron evaluadas revelaron niveles casi estequiométricos de peroxinitrito respecto a sus radicales precursores, el ácido cumarin borónico (un compuesto que reacciona directamente con peroxinitrito) fue el que mostró un perfil de oxidación más consistente en las PSM formando radical superóxido, en función del flujo de óxido nítrico. Un resultado interesante surgió de los estudios inmunoquímicos que verificaron la generación de radicales proteicos en PSM inducida por peroxinitrito. En otro tipo de enfoque, utilizamos un análogo hidrofóbico de tirosina (N-‐t-‐BOC L-‐tirosina tert-‐ butil éster, BTBE) pre-‐incorporado en mitocondrias y PSM, el cual se nitra y oxida por peroxinitrito. En las PSM conteniendo BTBE y formando radical superóxido, la exposición a flujos de óxido nítrico, causó la oxidación y posterior dimerización de la sonda en conexión con procesos de lipoperoxidación. Las PSM suplementadas con sustratos respiratorios redujeron a las Mn(III)porfirinas (MnP) a Mn(II)P, a niveles de oxígeno fisiológicamente relevantes (3-‐30 μM); a continuación, las Mn(II)P fueron capaces de reducir al peroxinitrito a nitrito y proteger las PSM de la inhibición del consumo de oxígeno por complejo I, de la formación de radicales proteicos y de la nitración de proteínas de membrana. La pre-‐ incubación de MnP en células endoteliales en cultivo protegió de la nitración de tirosinas proteicas mediada por peroxinitrito a partir de exposición a SIN-‐1. A través de miscroscopía confocal Raman Resonante detectamos directamente a las MnP dentro de las células, tanto en forma reducida como oxidada; el predominio observado de la forma reducida es totalmente consistente con su rol citoprotector en procesos nitroxidativos. Globalmente, los datos apoyan la formación de peroxinitrito en mitocondrias sometidas a flujos óxido nítrico y demuestran que las MnP pueden participar de un ciclo catalítico redox a nivel mitocondrial para neutralizar el daño oxidativo dependiente de peroxinitrito. Electrochemical studies (Formal Potentials and Coulometry) were performed on several analogues of Nifurtimox, in order to gain insight on the proposed mechanism of action of these drugs. It is thought that Nifurtimox shows part of its trypanocidal activity via an electron transfer process, leading to the production of active oxygen species that kill the parasite. Formal potentials provide relevant data about the feasibility of electron transfer in vivo. All analogues tested contained the nitro group, which is the most easily reducible group in the parent drug Nifurtimox. The formal potentials values determined ranged from -1.86 to -0.46 V. Coulometric runs were carried out to study the one-electron transfer process. A good correlation between formal potentials and biological activity was found.
