Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The essential oils from leaves of two Uruguayan native Anacardiaceae, Schinus molle L. and Schinus lentiscifolius(L.) March., were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Sixteen compounds were identified in S. lentiscifolius and S. molle oils. Both oils were sesquiterpene hydrocarbon-rich with δ-cadinene (16.79%) and bicyclo-germacrene (29.20%) being the major components in the oils of S. lentiscifolius and S. molle, respectively.

A summary of the resource.
Monodisperse core–shell stable latexes with reactive methylchloride surface functionalities were prepared at two different reaction temperatures. The reaction temperature played an important role in the amount of reactive functional groups. The covalent coupling had an efficiency of more than 50%. Antibodies covalently bound to functionalized polystyrene beads were used to detect corresponding antigens by nephelometry.

A summary of the resource.
As a part of a plan for the preparation of Bryophyte constituents, the synthesis of three new perrottetins isolated from Pellia epiphylla was undertaken. Accordingly, efficient and expeditious syntheses of new perrottetins are described. Comparison between the natural and synthetic material could only confirm the existence of 14′-Hydroxyperrottetin E among the products isolated from Pellia epiphylla, being the structures of the other two isolated compounds different from the proposed ones. The Becke three-parameter Lee–Yang–Parr (B3LYP) density functional method is applied to the study of the reaction Li + HF → H + LiF; the results obtained are compared with experiment and previous multireference singles and doubles configuration interaction (MRDCI) calculations, and with singles and doubles quadratic configuration interaction (QCISD) and Gaussian 2 (G2) model chemistry calculations performed also in this paper. It is found that, using an extended 6-311 + + G(3df,3pd) basis set, the predicted stabilization enthalpy of the initial LiFH complex (–34•6 kJ mo1-1) and the exoergicity of the reaction (–7•3 kJ mo1-1) are predicted in agreement with experiment (∼ – 31 kJ mo1-1 and – 4•8 ± 8 kJ mo1-1, respectively). These results are also in agreement with the MRDCI calculations (∼ – 31•5 kJ mo1-1 and – 9 kJ mo1-1, respectively). However, the energy of the transition state with respect to the reactants at the B3LYP level is about 25 kJ mo1-1 lower than the MRDCI result (which agrees with the QCISD and G2 values). Therefore, it is concluded that B3LYP is not describing this reaction properly. It is shown, however, that this defect is due mainly to the inclusion of the LYP correlation functional instead of the Perdew–Wang originally considered by Becke for developing his adiabatically connected functional. When B3PW91 is considered instead of B3LYP, the height of the transition state is in better agreement with the conventional ab initio methods, although still off by 50%.

A summary of the resource.
Ab initio and density functional (DFT) calculations were performed on radical cations with the formula HXCO+˙ (X = H, F, and CI) and their isomers XCOH+˙. Hartree-Fock, Møller-Plesset at second order (MP2), and quadratic configuration interaction including singles and doubles (QCISD) methods were employed for geometry optimizations at the ab initio level. Becke's 1988 and three-parameter exchange potentials, together with Vosko-Wilk-Nusair (VWN) and Lee-Yang-Paar (LYP) correlation potentials (BVWN, BLYP, and B3LYP) were used for the DFT calculations. HF and MPn isomerization energies are severely in error, mostly due to a bad description of the XHCO+˙ cation radicals at the Hartree-Fock level, leading to oscillatory behavior of the perturbation series. QCISD methods, at least, are needed to obtain accurate results at the conventional ab initio level, even using large extended basis sets. B3LYP results are most similar to QCISD results for the isomerization energies of the three cation radicals. Parent neutral species are also described to a high degree of accuracy. B3LYP methods are faster than QCISD (and as exact as them) for all the cases studied here. MP2 methods, although giving incorrect results, are faster than B3LYP up to about 80 basis functions. For larger problems, B3LYP methods are faster. The best theoretical results obtained indicate that fluoro- and chloroformaldehyde cation radicals are less stable than their hydroxyfluoro- and hydroxychloromethylene isomers, the reverse situation than for the formaldehyde cation radical. The best values found in this article for the isomerization energy of XHCO+˙ are −26 ± 2 kJ/mol (X = H), +37 ± 2 kJ/mol (X = F), and +28 ± 2 kJ/mol (X = CI). Ionization energies of 10.9, 12.3, and 11.4 eV are predicted for the XHCO species (X = H, F, CI)

Extended Hueckel molecular orbital calculations for the adsorption of H-atoms in a simulated aqueous electrochemical environment on Pt(111) and Pt(100) clusters were made. Different adsorbate configurations were considered. H-atom adsorption on hollow sites coadsorbed with an on top OH-species for Pt(111), and H-atom adsorption on bridge sites for Pt(100) are favoured. At potentials lower than the hydrogen electrode equilibrium potential, H-adatom configurations involving subsurface Pt atoms can also be formed. For both Pt(111) and Pt(100), these structures are probably related to species involved in the H-atom electrosorption and hydrogen evolution reaction.

The influence of carbon monoxide, ethylene, acetylene, allyl alcohol and propargyl alcohol on nickel electrodissolution in aqueous 0.5m H2SO4 was studied after the adsorption equilibrium of each of these species at a fixed potential and room temperature had been attained. The hindrance of nickel electrodissolution by carbon monoxide is greater than that resulting from double and triple C-C bond compounds at the same concentration in the solution.

In this work we analysed the modulation of the antibody response to Echinococcus granulosus antigens via anti-idiotype (Ab2) administration. In a first set of experiments, we determined the antibody response to hydatid cyst fluid antigen (HCFA) of mice immunized with Ab2. Results showed that Ab2 elicited anti-HCFA antibodies in mice that had never been exposed to HCFA before. Moreover, that response was characterized by booster effect, avidity maturation and an inverse correlation between avidity and Ab2 dose. We infected these mice and measured the titre and avidity of anti-HCFA antibodies during 250 days of infection. Lack of avidity maturation was the most important feature observed, suggesting that the parasite (either protoscolex or cyst) could modulate the antibody response of its host. In a second set of experiments, we investigated the presence of regulatory anti-idiotypes in the Ab2 preparation. In this context we treated neonates with different doses of Ab2, immunized them with HCFA 12 weeks later and determined their anti-HCFA titres. A specific and Ab2 dose-dependent suppression of the response to HCFA was observed, suggesting the existence of regulatory anti-idiotypes in the Ab2 preparation. Although this Ab2 could be involved in the regulation of the anti-HCFA response, other anti-idiotypes could also be involved. Our results show that it may be possible to improve the avidity of the anti-HCFA response via the administration of the anti-idiotype Ab. However, the live parasite could successfully revert this effect by mechanisms not yet characterized.

The goal of the present work was to study the effects of acid treatment on the foaming properties of a soybean protein isolate (SPI) and its fractions, glycinin (11S) and β-conglycinin (7S). The structural characteristics, interfacial properties, foaming capacity and stability of the treated proteins were studied. Results from surface hydrophobicity and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the acid treatment caused the complete denaturation of 11S and a partial denaturation of 7S. This protein unfolding affected their interfacial properties, which led to an improvement in the foaming properties of both protein fractions and isolate. Treated 7S showed the best behavior in the rearrangement process, probably due to its smaller size and its modified structural characteristics. All treated proteins showed stronger interfacial films. The foams of treated proteins were destabilized mostly due to gravitational drainage rather than Ostwald ripening.

In this work, two novel ruthenium-based compounds containing mercaptothiazolinate ligands were synthesized. A methanol (MeOH) solution containing [RuCl2(PPh3)3], 2-mercaptothiazoline (Hmctz) or 2-mercaptobenzothiazoline (Hmcbtz) (ligand/Ru = 2) and triethylamine (NEt3) was refluxed leading to the formation of neutral complexes with the general formula cis-[Ru(N–S)2(PPh3)2] (N–S = mctz� – complex 1; N–S = mcbtz� – complex 2). We used NMR (1H and 31P{1H}), vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR), and elemental analysis to analyze these two complexes. Cyclic voltammetry revealed that complexes 1 and 2 underwent a reversible one-electron process due to the Ru(III)/Ru(II) pair. Reactivity of the complexes 1 and 2 with dmso leading to the substitution of one PPh3 by dmso was observed (complexes 3 and 4). Complex 1 showed higher antimicrobial activity against Gram (+) and Gram(�) bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli, respectively). The formation of complex [Ru(mctz)2(dmso)(PPh3)] (3) was faster than complex [Ru(mcbtz)2(dmso)(PPh3)] (4) and this may account for the higher antibacterial activity of complex 1. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction furnished the molecular structures of complex 1 and of the product of its reaction with dmso, [Ru(mctz)2(dmso)(PPh3)] (3).

Berberine is an isoquinoline alkaloid with multiple pharmacological actions, including an anti-inflammatory activity. The effects of berberine on in-vitro cellular proliferation of human peripheral lymphocytes stimulated with phytohaemagglutinin, concanavalin A and pokeweed mitogen were studied. Mononuclear cells were cultured in flat-bottomed 96-well microplates at 37°C for 96–144 h in the presence of one mitogen at different concentrations and the alkaloid at doses of 2.5 to 20 μgmL−1. The mitogen-induced response of lymphocytes was evaluated from the extent of the incorporation of [3H]thymidine into cells in-vitro. A consistent and progressive inhibitory influence of berberine with increasing concentrations in culture was identified with all mitogens and was more pronounced with pokeweed mitogen. The effect of berberine was observed in phytohaemagglutinin (PHA)- and concanavalin A-activated lymphocytes when the drug was added during the first 24 h of culture, whereas the same effect occurred throughout the incubation period in pokeweed mitogen-stimulated cells. The viability of lymphocytes following treatment with the drug, as assessed by the trypan blue exclusion test, revealed no change when compared with the same untreated lymphocytes, indicating no lymphocytotoxic activity. We conclude that some effects of berberine, especially its anti-inflammatory action, may arise in part from the inhibition of DNA-synthesis in activated lymphocytes.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
A pesar de los grandes avances en la quimioterapia de las enfermedades infecciosas estas están lejos de ser controladas y más aún erradicadas y son aún una de las principales causas de muerte en el mundo. Esto se debe, entre otros motivos, a la falta de una terapéutica adecuada, tanto sea por la falta de fármacos efectivos (para infecciones fúngicas o virales) como a la rápida aparición de resistencia que vuelve inefectivas las drogas existentes. Los agentes infecciosos resistentes, o sea aquellos que no son destruidos o inhibidos por los compuestos antimicrobianos son una creciente causa de preocupación en los organismos de salud pública. La tuberculosis, la gonorrea, la malaria y las otitis infecciosas en niños pequeños son sólo algunas de las enfermedades que se han convertido en difíciles de tratar debido a la aparición de cepas resistentes y multiresistentes (NIAID, 1998; Fauci & Marston, 2014). Esto ha llevado a numerosas iniciativas para desarrollar programas colaborativos para enfrentar la situación como el programa ESKAPE. Los microorganismos ESKAPE, Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumanii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, y varias especies de Enterobacter son los patógenos que en la actualidad causan la mayoría de las infecciones hospitalarias de Estados Unidos y de manera efectiva "se escapan" de los efectos de los fármacos antibacterianos. Datos de los Centros para el Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC) muestran un rápido aumento de las tasas de infección debido a Staphylococcus aureus meticilino resistente (MRSA) , E. faecium resistente a la vancomicina (VRE) y P. aeruginosa resistentes a las fluoroquinolonas. Las opciones terapéuticas para estos patógenos son extremadamente limitadas de forma que en la clínica obliga a utilizar los medicamentos más antiguos, que antes se descartaban , como la colistina, que están asociados con toxicidad importante y para los que existe una falta de datos sólidos para orientar la selección de régimen de dosificación o la duración de la terapia. El creciente número de pacientes de edad avanzada y los pacientes sometidos a cirugía , el trasplante y la quimioterapia y los aumentos dramáticos en la población en unidades de cuidados intensivos neonatales Estudio de Metabolitos Secundarios Antibacterianos de la Flora Medicinal Nativa 2 producen un mayor número de individuos inmunocomprometidos con riesgo de estas infecciones (Boucher et al., 2009). Staphylococcus aureus es un patógeno comunitario y nocosomial importante. Este organismo es causante de una considerable preocupación debido a su gran habilidad de adquirir resistencia hacia los nuevos antibacterianos que alcanzan el mercado. Esta bacteria Gram positiva coloniza la piel en aproximadamente el 40 % de la gente sana. Es una de las bacterias más difíciles de tratar en pacientes y de erradicar del ambiente del hospital. Es particularmente preocupante la velocidad con que la bacteria genera nuevas resistencias. El problema de la resistencia demanda un renovado esfuerzo en la búsqueda de agentes antibacterianos efectivos contra bacterias patógenas resistentes a los actuales antibióticos. Las plantas superiores han demostrado ser una fuente importante de nuevos compuestos bioactivos, tanto por presentar actividad farmacológica per se, como por representar nuevos tipos moleculares para el desarrollo de drogas, incluyendo antihipertensivos, analgésicos, citotóxicos y antiinflamatorios. Esto incluye compuestos que son medicamentos de primera elección o incluso los únicos existentes para el tratamiento de éstas afecciones. Ejemplos son la vincristina y vinblastina, alcaloides aislados de C.roseus utilizados clínicamente para el tratamiento de varios tipos de linfomas y leucemias, el taxol extraído de T.baccata (Clarck, 1996; Cowan, 1999). El enfoque etnofarmacológico es un proceso alternativo utilizado para la selección de material para el desarrollo de fármacos y comprende trabajo de campo etnobotánico y etnomédico. Este enfoque combinado involucra el estudio de plantas utilizadas en la medicina folclórica y popular. En las décadas pasadas la etnobotánica médica se ha desarrollado y evolucionado hacia una nueva disciplina que incluye el trabajo en colaboración de diferentes áreas del conocimiento (Cox, 1990, Cox & Balick, 1994).

A summary of the resource.
In a previous work we have identified two possible structures for the radical cation obtained by ionization of hydrogen‐bonded formaldehyde–water complexes [Coitiño et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 115, 9121 (1993)], a hydrogen‐bonded and an addition‐like complexes. We observed that the results were highly dependent on the method of calculation employed. Inclusion of correlation was crucial for obtaining the correct structures of some of the complexes. In this work we used high‐level ab initio calculations in order to predict the equilibrium structure of these two complexes, the possibility of its existence in gas phase, and the infrared spectrum to be expected in each case. A series of progressively more sophisticated basis sets was used to assess the effect of the quality of the calculations on the expected results. Also, full geometry optimization with each basis set was performed at the second‐order Mo/ller–Plesset level, and correlation energy was calculated at the fourth‐order Mo/ller–Plesset level to assess the contribution of this factor to the global result. Confirming our previous results, we found that correlation affects the hydrogen‐bonded radical‐cation complex more than the addition one, due to the different bonding patterns in each of them. Both complexes are stable—toward decomposition to the fragments or to CO+H+H3O+—by several kcal/mol at all levels of theory. The hydrogen‐bonded complex is more stable than the additional one by a respectable amount (13 kcal/mol at the highest level used here), lending support to our previous analysis of the reactions of the former as the main channels for evolution of the formaldehyde–water radical cation. The H‐bonded complex [H3O+...HCO⋅] presents two characteristics, very intense absorptions which should allow identification of this radical cation if present in the experimental setup. These transitions are also present in the HCO⋅ radical but their intensity is enhanced by an order of magnitude due to the coupling with the proton in H3O+. We conclude that the combination of stability and characteristic infrared transitions should make this radical‐cation complex a relatively easy target for experimental determination.

A summary of the resource.
A new formulation (CLS-PCM) for the calculation of the apparent surface charges in the framework of the ab initio polarizable continuum model of the solvent (PCM) is introduced. Its performance is compared with that of the original iterative version (ITER-PCM) of the method as well as with a matricial alternative formulation (matrix-BEM-PCM) of the same problem. Both CLS-PCM and matrix-BEM-PCM have shown to be computationally more efficient than ITER-PCM without presenting any problems associated with the convergence of the process. Although for small and medium-size solutes the use of matrix-BEM-PCM is recommended, for neutral solutes of larger size the use of CLS2 becomes computationally more convenient. Finally, for very large-size systems, compromise between matrix storage requirements, time of calculation, and exactness of the results may make preferable the use of the more approximate CLS1 formalism, possibly in conjunction with semiempirical or semiclassical descriptions of the solute.
