Abstract
A summary of the resource.
We investigated the oxidation and sulfurization of the graphenylene monolayer. Although this structure is unstable when it is 100 % covered with oxygen, obtaining a stable form of oxidized graphenylene is possible for 50 % of coverage. In this structure, the oxygen atoms are added on alternating sides of the monolayer, adopting an epoxy-like structure. It is stable up to 1635 K and is a minimum on the potential surface energy. It is an insulator with an indirect band gap of 5.3 eV, a value much larger than the band gap of the pristine graphenylene. Its sulfur counterpart is stable up to 1256 K, presenting a smaller indirect band gap of 3.5 eV.

In this work copper, molybdenum and sulfur determinations in grass, used as biomonitor of the soil, were performed during the period 2008-2009 and compared with the levels obtained in 2000-2001 in the same locations with the aim of observing environmental changes after the implementation of a program recommending oral and injected copper supplements in cows and after the use of fertilizers containing molybdenum and sulfur elements that can affect copper bioavailability. Several correlations with meteorological factors were also studied. The results showed that the copper level increased in grass but the concentrations remained below the recommended values. The mean copper concentrations in spring, summer, autumn and winter were 2.44, 3.12, 4.29 and 5.21 mg kg-1 DM, respectively, and for molybdenum were 0.20, 0.16, 0.22 and 0.17 mg kg-1 DM, respectively (DM = dry matter). In many samples, the molybdenum concentration was above the recommended range and consequently a secondary defi ciency can be observed. In addition, a seasonal variation in grass, an inverse correlation between copper and molybdenum concentrations and a direct correlation between copper levels and the relative humidity were observed permitting visualization of the most critical periods of hypocuprosis.

Bismuth-based chalcohalides have garnered significant attention over the past five years due to their promising optoelectronic properties, and applicability in photodetection, ionizing radiation detection, photocatalysis, and solar cells. Among these compounds, Bi19S27I3 stands out as a novel material with relatively unexplored synthesis and properties. In this study, we introduce a green synthesis approach for Bi19S27I3 nanostructures, employing the hot injection method under mild conditions with water as the solvent. By utilizing polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a capping agent with molar proportions [PEG : Bi] 0.5 : 1, 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 and adjusting the reaction time (5 min or 270 min), we successfully controlled the morphology, yielding either round nanoparticles, nanorolls, or a combination of both. For instance, longer reaction times such as 270 min enhance the crystallinity of the material and also encourage morphology uniformity, while PEG favors a rounded morphology. Our findings underscore the significant capping effect of PEG, particularly evident in the photocatalytic activity of Bi19S27I3 towards Cr(VI) reduction. Through this facile and efficient synthesis strategy, we tailored the morphology of Bi19S27I3 and demonstrated its efficacy in Cr(VI) photocatalysis, achieving a remarkable 91% reduction for the nanoroll-based sample with PEG: Bi [1 : 1]. This innovative approach not only provides an environmentally friendly method for synthesizing Bi19S27I3 but also highlights its potential as an effective photocatalyst for environmental remediation.

Biomass-derived chemical platforms such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) can offer straight forward access to new value-added products. The presence of an aldehyde and hydroxymethyl functional groups in this molecule are interesting structural motifs to explore the synthesis of new bioactive compounds. In this contribution, a strategy to quickly and efficiently synthesize nitro vinylfurans starting from 5-HMF under greener conditions is described and the antiproliferative activity of the synthesized compounds evaluated. 5-HMF obtained by microwave-assisted satu rated biphasic dehydration from fructose was used to produce furaldehyde derivatives. Next, through a nitroaldolic condensation, the desired nitrovinylfurans were generated using efficient heating sources, ultrasound, or a non-microwave instant heating reactor, under solvent-free con ditions. Most of the newly synthesized compounds showed growth inhibition when assayed for their in vitro antiproliferative activity against six cancer cell lines (A549, HBL-100, HeLa, SW1573, T-47D, and WiDr), with lower toxicity on the human macrophage-like cells (THP-1). Our strategy allowed the rapid identification of nitrovinylfurans 16, 17, 19, and 20 as future can didates for the development of new selective anticancer drugs.

<p>Prostate and bladder cancers are commonly diagnosed malignancies in men. Several nitric oxide donor compounds with strong antitumor activity have been reported. Thus, continuing with our efforts to explore the chemical space around bioactive furoxan moiety, multicomponent reactions<br />were employed for the rapid generation of molecular diversity and complexity. We herein report the use of Ugi and Groebke–Blackburn–Bienaymé multicomponent reactions under efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly conditions to synthesize a small collection of nitric-oxide-releasing molecules. The in vitro antiproliferative activity of the synthesized compounds was measured against two different human cancer cell lines, LNCaP (prostate) and T24 (bladder). Almost all compounds displayed antiproliferative activity against both cancer cell lines, providing lead compounds with nanomolar GI50 values against the cancer bladder cell line with selectivity indices higher than 10.</p>

As a Medical Geology research issue, an environmental arsenic risk assessment study in the most important sedimentary aquifer in southern Uruguay is presented. The Raigón Aquifer System is the most exploited in Uruguay. It has a surface extent of about 1,800 square kilometres and 10,000 inhabitants in San Jose Department, where it was studied. Agriculture and cattle breeding are the main economic activities and this aquifer is the basic support. The groundwater sampling was done on 37 water samples of PRENADER (Natural Resources Management and Irrigation Development Program) wells. Outcropping sediments of Raigón Formation and the overlying Libertad Formation were also sampled in the Kiyú region. The analyses were performed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results showed 80% samples with arsenic levels exceeding the 10 μg/l of WHO as limit for waters, and 11% exceeds the 20 μg/l limit of uruguayan regulation. The median, maximum and minimum water arsenic concentrations determined have been 14.24, 24.19 and 1.44 μg/l, respectively. On the other hand, nine sediment samples of Raigón and Libertad Formations in Kiyú region were analysed and yielded median, maximum and minimum arsenic concentrations of 5.03, 9.82 and 1.18 ppm, respectively. This issue leads to the supposition that the population, as well as industrial and agricultural activities, are consuming water with arsenic concentrations over the national and international maximum recommended limit.<br />Como una aproximación a la Geología Médica en Uruguay se presentan los resultados de un estudio sobre el estado del Sistema Acuífero Raigón en relación a la presencia de arsénico, en el entendido que es el acuífero más explotado en el país. En particular, el área cubierta por este trabajo es de unos 1800 km2 en un territorio con una población de unos 10,000 habitantes en el departamento de San José. La colecta de aguas del acuífero se realizó en perforaciones de la base de datos de PRENADER (Proyecto de Manejo de Recursos Naturales y Desarrollo del Riego) obteniéndose 37 muestras, y sobre 9 muestras de sedimentos tanto de la Formación Raigón como la suprayacente Libertad en afloramientos de la región de Kiyú. Los análisis fueron realizados mediante ICP-MS. Un 80% de las muestras de aguas analizadas mostraron contenidos mayores a los límites de la OMS (10 μg/l) y un 11% de las muestras superaron el límite de la OSE (20 μg/l). El valor medio, máximo y mínimo determinado en el caso del agua subterránea fue de 14.24, 24.19 and 1.44 μg/l, respectivamente. Por otro lado, las nueve muestras de sedimentos analizados mostraron concentraciones media, máxima y mínima de arsénico de 5.03, 9.82 and 1.18 ppm, respectivamente, descartándose en principio un origen geogénico.

A summary of the resource.
Bismuth tri-iodide synthesized from bismuth subcarbonate and potassium iodide, and then purified by zone refining followed by one sublimation, was used as starting material. A first set of platelets was grown by physical vapor deposition (PVD) under argon atmosphere (7×104 Pa), with a source temperature of 300°C and during 5-7 days. Growth temperature was at about 260°C. Other set of platelets was grown by traveling molten zone (TMZ), at 460°C and with a traveling speed of 5 mm/h. Platelets are up to 20×10 mm2 in size and from 50 to 80 μm in thickness. Dendritic-like defects turned out to be the main surface defect for the PVD crystals. Some samples exhibit hexagonal microcrystals on their surface, which indicates that they grow from layers of hexagonal grains. Detectors were made with representative platelets by Pd or Au thermal deposition (contact areas of 0.03, 0.02, 0.12 cm2), Pd wire attachment with aquadag and acrylic encapsulation. TMZ crystals show a better surface crystal quality, but this fact does not seem to particularly influence the detector electrical properties. However, the metal used for electrode deposition determines the resistivity, and Au emerges as better than Pd for this purpose. Detector X-ray response was measured by irradiation with a 241Am source of 3.5 mR/h. Resistivities up to 2.0×1012 Ω·cm were obtained, the best reported for detectors made with monocrystals of this material, which correlates with the fact that these detectors are the first BiI3 ones that respond to an X-ray moderate radiation exposure. Platelets obtained in the present work give detector but not spectrometric grade material.

The work reports the growth of single BI3 crystals with platelets habit. Platelets were grown by physical vapor deposition (PVD) in a high vacuum atmosphere and with argon, polymer or iodine as additives. Crystals grew in the zone of maximum temperature gradient, perpendicular to the ampoule wall. Crystals grown with argon as additive show a very shining surface, have hexagonal (0 0 l) faces, sizes up to 20 x 10 mm2 and thicknesses up to 100 μm. They were characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Dendritic-like structures were found to be their main surface defect. SEM indicates that they grow from the staking of hexagonal unities. Electrical properties of the crystals grown under different growth conditions were determined. Resistivities up to 2 x 1012 Ωcm (the best reported value for monocrystals of this material) were obtained. X-ray response was measured by irradiation of the platelets with a 241Am source of 3.5 mR/h. A comparison of results according to the growth conditions was made. Properties of the crystals grown by this method are compared with the ones measured for others previously grown from the melt. Also, results for bismuth tri-iodide platelets are compared with the ones obtained for mercuric and lead iodide platelets.

Lead bromide polycrystalline films were grown by the physical vapor deposition method (PVD). Glass 1″x1″ in size, uncoated, and coated with Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), was used as substrate and rear contact. The starting material was evaporated at temperatures from 395°C to 530°C under high vacuum atmosphere (6 x 10-3 Pa) and during 8 days. The substrate temperature was prefixed from 190°C to 220°C. Film thickness yielded values from 40 to 90 μm. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed on the films. Grain size resulted to be from 1.0 to 3.5 μm. SEM and X-ray diffraction indicate that films grow with a preferred orientation with the (0 0 l) planes parallel to the substrate. The Texture Coefficient (TC) related to the plane (0 0 6) was 7.3. Resistivity values in the order of 1012 Ωcm were obtained for the oriented samples, but a strong polarization indicates severe charge transport problems in the films. Film properties were correlated with the growth temperature and with previous results for films of other halides.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Lead Iodide purified by zone refining, sublimation and evaporation and without purification was used as starting material for growing platelets by the vapor transport method. Growth was performed at vacuum and at 500 mmHg of Ar, during times from 10 to 25 days. Platelets grew at 200 -250 degree(s)C less than the source temperature, in the zone of maximum temperature gradient and perpendicular to the ampoule wall. Growth was performed several times and results were reproducible. Crystals have rectangular or hexagonal (0 0 1) faces, sizes up to 4x6 mm2 and thickness from 50 to 250 micrometers , an exceptional good optical clarity and reflecting surfaces. Purity and stoichiometry of starting materials were determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma and wet techniques. Platelets were characterized by optical microscopy. Radiation detectors were fabricated with them and detector current density and apparent resistivity were determined by I-V curves, giving results 300 pA/cm2 (30V) and 1013 (Omega) .cm. X-ray spectra were performed determining detector's energy resolution for different emissions, giving a resolution of 1 keV in the range of 10 - 20 keV radiations. According to electrical and spectrometric performance, optical microscopy and production yields, it was not necessary to use high purity starting material for obtaining excellent platelets. Correlation between optical and electrical properties of the crystals grown from this method and others previously grown from the melt are also discussed. Comparison between the growth of lead iodide platelets and mercuric iodide ones is included.

Mercuric iodide platelets were grown in the HgI 2 }HI}H 2 O system by solvent evaporation at constant temperature. Di!erent solution temperatures, growing times and stirring conditions were studied. In order to determine the best growing parameters the chemistry of the HgI 2 }HI}H 2 O system was studied. Complexes [HgI 3 ]~ and [HgI 4 ]~2 were identi"ed and quanti"ed in the solution by visible and UV spectrometry, according to the R ratio ([HgI 2 ]/[HI]). Solution oxidation and I~3 interference were eliminated performing growth in high purity Argon atmosphere. Good mercuric iodide platelets, up to 6.0]7.0]1.5mm3 in size, were obtained with appropriate argon #ow, temperature and growing time, for several independent experiences. Platelets were observed by optical microscopy and the absence of possible dislocations was con"rmed by studying etch pits density after etching with ethanol}trichloroethylene. Nonexistence of occluded water and hydrocarbons was con"rmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and was related to results obtained for mercuric iodide crystals grown by the physical vapor transport method. Detectors were made with the platelets and their apparent resistivity, current density and X-ray performance were measured. Discussions about future improvements of growing mercuric iodide platelets in the HgI 2 }HI}H 2 O system and comparison of this method with others are included.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The combination of different nanomaterials to achieve particular applications is a topic with an increasing impact on diverse areas of nanotechnology. In particular, the material of La2Zr2O7 (LZO) and NiO could be employed as a source of catalyst for carbon nanotube fabrication. In this work, the Ni/LZO material was utilized to fabricate nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotube (N-MWCNTs). The NMWCNTs were produced at 850 �C by the aerosol assisted catalytic chemical vapor deposition method using benzylamine as the sole carbon and nitrogen precursor. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and vibrating sample magnetometry. Before the synthesis of N-MWCNTs, NiO was reduced to Ni to act as a catalyst and LZO as support. N-MWCNTs exhibited the typical feature bamboo shape morphology with small nanoparticles anchored inside and on its surface. The electrochemical studies show interesting results about charge capacity and a hydroquinone/ quinone redox process of oxygen functionalities. The magnetic properties of N-MWCNTs showed a ferromagnetic behavior with a saturated magnetization of 43 emu/g at 0.2 T.

<h3><strong>Resumen</strong></h3>
<p>Yeast produces numerous secondary metabolites during fermentation that impact final wine quality. Although it is widely recognized that growth of diverse non-Saccharomyces (NS) yeast can positively affect flavor complexity during Saccharomyces cerevisiae wine fermentation, the inability to control spontaneous or co-fermentation processes by NS yeast has restricted their use in winemaking. We selected two NS yeasts from our Uruguayan native collection to study NS–S. cerevisiae interactions during wine fermentation. The selected strains of Hanseniaspora vineae and Metschnikowia pulcherrima had different yeast assimilable nitrogen consumption profiles and had different effects on S. cerevisiae fermentation and growth kinetics. Studies in which we varied inoculum size and using either simultaneous or sequential inoculation of NS yeast and S. cerevisiae suggested that competition for nutrients had a significant effect on fermentation kinetics. Sluggish fermentations were more pronounced when S. cerevisiae was inoculated 24 h after the initial stage of fermentation with a NS strain compared to co-inoculation. Monitoring strain populations using differential WL nutrient agar medium and fermentation kinetics of mixed cultures allowed for a better understanding of strain interactions and nutrient addition effects. Limitation of nutrient availability for S. cerevisiae was shown to result in stuck fermentations as well as to reduce sensory desirability of the resulting wine. Addition of diammonium phosphate (DAP) and a vitamin mix to a defined medium allowed for a comparison of nutrient competition between strains. Addition of DAP and the vitamin mix was most effective in preventing stuck fermentations.</p>
