A summary of the resource.
In this work, highly reactive carbon–iron composites were prepared using a waste, i.e. tar, as carbon precursor and a simple iron oxide, i.e. hematite. Tar was impregnated on Fe2O3 with different tar/hematite weight ratios of 1:1; 2:1 and 4:1, and thermally treated under N2 atmosphere (400◦C, 600◦C and 800◦C). Mössbauer, XRD andmagnetizationmeasurements suggested that treatment at 400◦C and 600◦C produces Fe3O4 but treatment at 800◦C produced mainly Fe◦. Raman and TG analyses of the different composites suggested the formation of carbon contents of 18, 24 and 32 wt.% as amorphous and graphitic highly dispersed on the Fe surface. The composites obtained at 800◦C showed high efficiency to reduce Cr(VI) as CrO2− 4 in aqueous medium with much better results compared to finely ground commercial Fe◦.

Background The horn fly Haematobia irritans is a blood-sucking ectoparasite responsible for substantial economic loss of livestock. Like other hematophagous arthropods species, the successful blood-feeding of H. irritans is highly dependent on the modulation of the host’s hemostasis and immune system. Here, we evaluated the biological activity of hematobin (HTB), a protein recently identified in the H. irritans saliva, on macrophage biology. The goal was to understand the putative interactions between the components of H. irritans saliva and the early host immune responses. Results Thioglycolate-elicited peritoneal macrophages from BALB/c mice were stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) plus interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in the presence or absence of recombinant HTB. The presence of the salivary protein in the cultures inhibited nitric oxide production and decreased the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression induced by LPS plus IFN-γ. The tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-12p40 (IL-12p40) levels were also reduced in the macrophages pre-incubated with HTB; these findings correlated to the decreased NF-κB expression. The biological activities described here were not associated with changes in annexin V binding to macrophages suggesting that HTB does not induce cell death. In addition, the activity of HTB seems to be specific to macrophages because no changes were observed in lymphocyte proliferation or cytokine production. Conclusions We describe here the first bioactive salivary protein of H. irritans. We characterized its ability to modulate macrophage inflammatory response, and the results can help explain how horn flies modulate the host immune system to feed on blood.

Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) seeds are composed of a high oil content rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants such as tocopherols and carotenes, resulting in an interesting nutritional aspect. Oil from hemp seeds extracted using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as the solvent preserves the qualities described above. However, the high operating pressures and the low solubility of the oil in scCO2 significantly increase operating costs. Generally, the use of pressurized n-propane as a solvent for extraction of vegetable oils is an alternative to overcome these challenges without changing their nutritional qualities. The main objective of this work was to study the extraction of the oil from dehulled hemp seeds using scCO2, pressurized n-propane and organic solvents at atmosphere conditions, to compare some physicochemical properties of the extracts. The extraction conditions using scCO2 as the solvent were 40 and 60 °C and 30 and 40 MPa. These operating conditions of extraction are similar to those available in the literature. For pressurized n-propane used as a solvent, temperatures of 40, 50 and 60 °C and pressures of 6, 8 and 10 MPa were used. The values of the extraction pressures with n-propane were defined from the knowledge of the phase behavior measured for the system n-propane (1) / hemp seed oil (2). The values of the mass percentage yields were similar for both pressurized solvents. However, the solubility of the oil in n-propane was higher than in scCO2. The kinetics of the extractions were satisfactorily using the Sovová modeling.

Biological control may benefit from the behavioral manipulation of natural enemies using volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Among these, herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) provide potential tools for attracting or retaining predators and parasitoids of insect pests. This work aimed to characterize the VOCs emitted by pear plants in response to attack by Cacopsylla bidens (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), a major pest in pear orchards, to compare these with VOCs induced by a leaf chewing insect, Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), and to evaluate the behavioral response of Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) to HIPVs from pear plants damaged by either herbivore. The results demonstrated that plants damaged by the pear psylla emitted VOC blends with increased amounts of aliphatic aldehydes. Leafroller damage resulted in increased amounts of benzeneacetonitrile, (E)-4,8-dimethylnona-1,3,7-triene, β-ocimene and caryophyllene. In olfactometer bioassays, larvae of C. externa were attracted to herbivore-damaged plants when contrasted with undamaged plants. When plant odors from psylla-damaged were contrasted with those of leafroller-damaged plants, C.externa preferred the former, also showing shorter response lag-times and higher response rates when psylla-damaged plants were present. Our results suggest that pear plants respond to herbivory by modifying their volatile profile, and that psylla-induced volatiles may be used as prey-specific chemical cues by chrysopid larvae. Our study is the first to report HIPVs in pear plants attacked by C. bidens, as well as the attraction of C. externa to psyllid-induced volatiles.

An efficient synthesis of a Diels-Alder adduct between purpurogallin tetramethyl ether (TMPG) and nitrosobenzene (NOB) is reported. The thermal decomposition kinetics of the adduct, which follows a retro-Diels-Alder mechanism, was studied using 1H-NMR spectroscopy.

A summary of the resource.
New heteroallyl-containing 5-nitrofuranes were synthesized as potential anti-Trypanosoma cruzi agents with a dual mechanism of action, oxidative stress and inhibition of membrane sterol biosynthesis. Some of the derivatives were found to have high and selective activity against the proliferative stages of the parasite, with IC50 values against the clinically relevant intracellular amastigote forms in the low micromolar to sub-micromolar range. Oxidative stress was verified measuring cyanide dependent respiration. Inhibition of the de novo sterol biosynthesis at the level of squalene epoxidase was confirmed, using high-resolution gas–liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, by the disappearance of the parasite’s mature sterols and the concomitant accumulation of squalene. The in vitro activities of these novel compounds were superior to that of nifurtimox, a nitrofuran currently used in the treatment of human Chagas’ disease, and terbinafine, a commercially available allylamine-based squalene epoxidase inhibitor. The results support further in vivo studies of some of these nitrofuran derivatives.

A summary of the resource.
New 1,2,4-thiadiazolylnitrones and furoxanylnitrones were developed and evaluated as neuroprotective agents on a human neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) cells model. They inhibited at low micromolar concentrations the oxidative damage and the death induced by exposure to hydrogen peroxide. These heteroarylnitrones showed excellent peroxyl free radical absorbance capacities, analyzed by oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay with fluorescein as the fluorescent probe, ranging from 1.5- to 16.5-fold the value of the reference nitrone, α-phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN). The electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) demonstrated the ability of these derivatives to directly trap and stabilize oxygen, carbon, and sulfur-centered free radicals. These results demonstrated the potential use of these heteroarylnitrones as neuroprotective agents in preventing the death of cells exposed to enhanced oxidative stress and damage.<br /><br />

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Although Diels-Alder and [2+2] cycloadditions have been performed onto graphene, defects are required to facilitate them. We report that heteroatom doping is a novel approach to promote these reactions onto graphene, by increasing reaction energies up to five times with respect to undoped graphene. The dopants introduced define the cycloaddition product. For example, Silicon facilitates [4+2] processes while Sulfur, Nitrogen and Boron give [2+2] products.

Three copper(II)-rhenium(IV) bimetallic complexes of formula [ReCl(4)(mu-ox)Cu(phen)(2)] (1), [ReCl(4)(mu-ox)Cu(phen)(2)].CH(3)CN (2), and [ReCl(4)(mu-ox)Cu(terpy) (H(2)O)][ReCl(4)(mu-ox)Cu(terpy)(CH(3)CN)] (3) (ox = oxalate anion, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, and terpy = 2,2':6,2"- terpyridine) have been synthesized and their crystal structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P(-1), with a = 9.776(2), b = 11.744(3), c = 14.183(3) A, alpha =102.09(2) degrees, beta = 109.42(2) degrees, gamma = 107.11(2) degrees, and Z = 2, whereas 2 and 3 crystallize in the monoclinic system, space groups P2(1)/n and P2(1)/c, respectively, with a = 12.837(3), b = 17.761(4), c = 12.914(3) A, beta = 91.32(2) degrees, and Z = 4 for 2, and a = 8.930(2), b = 18.543(4), c = 27.503(6) A, beta = 94.67(2) degrees, and Z = 4 for 3. The structures of 1 and 2 are made up of neutral [ReCl(4)(mu-ox)Cu(phen)(2)] bimetallic units. Re(IV) and Cu(II) metal ions exhibit distorted octahedral coordination geometries, being bridged by a bis(bidentate) oxalato ligand. The presence of acetonitrile molecules of crystallization in 2 causes a somewhat greater separation between the bimetallic complexes and a different packing of these units in the crystal structure with respect to 1. The copper-rhenium separation across oxalato is 5.628(2) in 1 and 5.649(3) A in 2. The structure of 3 is made up of two different and neutral bimetallic units, [ReCl(4)(mu-ox)Cu(terpy)(H(2)O)] and [ReCl(4)(mu-ox)Cu(terpy)(CH(3)CN)]. In the first one, the oxalate group behaves as a bis(bidentate) ligand occupying one equatorial and one axial position in the elongated octahedral environment of Cu(II). The water molecule is axially coordinated. In the second one, the oxalate group behaves as a bidentate/monodentate ligand occupying the axial position in the square pyramidal environment of Cu(II). The acetonitrile molecule occupies a basal coordination position around the copper atom. These units are arranged in such a way that a chlorine atom of the first unit (Cl(1)) points toward the copper atom (Cu(2))of the second one (3.077(2) A for Cl(1)(.)Cu(2)), forming a tetranuclear species. The copper-rhenium separation across bis(didentate) oxalato is 5.504(3) A, whereas that through bidentate/monodentate oxalato is 5.436(2) A. The magnetic behavior of 2 and 3 has been investigated over the temperature range 1.8-300 K. A very weak and nearly identical antiferromagnetic coupling between Re(IV) and Cu(II) through bis(bidentate) oxalato occurs in 2 (J = -0.90 cm(-1)) and 3 (J = -0.83 cm(-1)); it is ferromagnetic in 3 through both the bidentate-monodentate oxalato (J = +5.60 cm(-1)) and the chloro (J = +0.70 cm(-1)) bridges.

Four rhenium(IV)-M(II) bimetallic complexes of formula [ReCl4(í-ox)M(dmphen)2]âCH3CN with M ) Mn (1), Fe (2), Co (3), and Ni (4) (ox ) oxalate anion, dmphen ) 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized and the crystal structures of 1 and 3 determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 and 3 are isostructural and crystallize in the monoclinic system, space group P21/c, with a ) 16.008(4) Å, b ) 12.729(2) Å, c ) 18.909(5) Å, â ) 112.70(2)°, and Z ) 4 for 1 and a ) 15.998(4) Å, b ) 12.665(2) Å, c ) 18.693(5) Å, â ) 112.33(2)°, and Z ) 4, for 3. The structure of 1 and 3 is made up of neutral [ReCl4(í-ox)M(dmphen)2] bimetallic units (M ) Mn (1), Co (3)) and acetonitrile molecules of crystallization. M(II) and Re(IV) metal ions exhibit distorted octahedral coordination geometries being bridged by a bis(bidentate) oxalato ligand. The magnetic behavior of 1-4 has been investigated over the temperature range 2.0-300 K. A very weak antiferromagnetic coupling between Re(IV) and Mn(II) occurs in 1 (J ) -0.1 cm-1), whereas a significant ferromagnetic interaction between Re(IV) and M(II) is observed in 2-4 [J ) +2.8 (2), +5.2 (3), and +5.9 cm-1 (4)].

A regional raw clay was used as the starting material to prepare iron-pillared clays with different iron contents. The catalytic activity of these materials was tested in the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process, applied to the degradation of 2-chlorophenol chosen as the model pollutant. Different catalyst loads between 0.2 and 1.0 g L−1 and pH values between 3.0 and 7.0 were studied. The local volumetric rate of photon absorption (LVRPA) in the reactor was evaluated solving the radiative transfer equation applying the discrete ordinate method and using the optical properties of the catalyst suspensions. The photonic and quantum efficiencies of the 2-chlorophenol degradation depend on both the catalyst load and the iron content of the catalyst. The higher values for these parameters, 0.080 mol Einstein−1 and 0.152 mol Einstein−1, respectively, were obtained with 1.0 g L−1 of the catalyst with the higher iron content (17.6%). For the mineralization process, photonic and quantum efficiencies depend mainly on the catalyst load. Therefore, it was possible to employ a natural and cheap resource from the region to obtain pillared clay-based catalysts to degrade organic pollutants in water

In Latin America Chagas disease is an endemic illness caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), killing more people than any other parasitic disease. Current chemotherapies are old and inadequate, thus the development of efficient ones is urgently needed. Vanadium-based complexes have been shown to be a promising approach both against parasitic diseases and cancer and this study aims to achieve significant advances in the pursue of effective compounds. Heteroleptic vanadium complexes of Schiff bases and polypyridine compounds were prepared and their stability in solution evaluated by EPR (Electronic Paramagnetic Resonance) and NMR spectroscopy. Their in vitro activities were evaluated against T. cruzi and a set of cells lines representative of human cancer conditions, namely ovarian, breast and prostate cancer. In T. cruzi, most of the complexes depicted IC50 values in the low μM range, induced changes of mitochondrial membrane potential and apoptosis. In cancer cells, complexes showed good to moderate activity and in metastatic cells (prostate PC3), some complexes inhibited the migratory ability, this suggesting that they display antimetastatic potential. Interestingly, complex 5 seemed to have a dual effect being the most cytotoxic complex on all cancer cells and also the most active anti-T-cruzi compound of the series. Globally the complexes showed promising anticancer and anti T. cruzi activities and also displayed some characteristics indicating they are worth to be further explored as antimetastatic drugs.

<p>Five heteroleptic compounds, [VVO(IN-2H)(L-H)], where L are 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives and IN is a Schiff base ligand, were synthesized and characterized in both the solid and solution state. The compounds were evaluated on epimastigotes and trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi as well as on VERO cells, as a mammalian cell model. Compounds showed activity against trypomastigotes with IC50 values of 0.29–3.02 �M. IN ligand and the new [VVO2(IN-H)] complex showed negligible activity. The most active compound [VVO(IN-2H)(L2-H)], with L2 = 5-chloro-7-iodo- 8-hydroxyquinoline, showed good selectivity towards the parasite and was selected to carry out further biological studies. Stability studies suggested a partial decomposition in solution. [VVO(IN-2H)(L2-H)] affects the infection potential of cell-derived trypomastigotes. Low total vanadium uptake by parasites and preferential accumulation in the soluble proteins fraction were determined. A trypanocide effect was observed when incubating epimastigotes with 10 � IC50 values of [VVO(IN-2H)(L2-H)] and the generation of ROS after treatments was suggested. Fluorescence competition measurements with DNA:ethidium bromide adduct showed a moderate DNA interaction of the complexes. In vivo toxicity study on C. elegans model showed no toxicity up to a 100 �M concentration of [VVO(IN-2H)(L2-H)]. This compound could be considered a prospective anti-T. cruzi agent that deserves further research.</p>

The ionic salts (p-rad)2[ReCl6] (1) and (m-rad)2[ReCl6] (2) (p/m-rad = 2-(4/3-N-methylpyridinium)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro- 1H-imidazol-1-oxyl-3-N-oxide) have been prepared and their crystal structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The nitronyl nitroxide cations in compound 1 show a layered disposition, whereas the [ReCl6]2� units are placed between these layers. The nitronyl nitroxide cations in compound 2 adopt an hexagonal array but they do not result in layers. Bulk magnetic properties of 1 and 2 have been investigated in the temperature range 2–300 K. Both compounds show weak but significant intermolecular antiferromagnetic interactions.

The adsorption of alkali atoms (Li, Na, and K) on graphene and hexagonal boron phosphide (h-BP) is studied by means of various density functionals including semi-local GGA, dispersion corrected DFT-D, meta-GGA, and many of the available non-local vdW-DF functionals. The accurate interaction energies are crucial for energy storage and battery applications as it is directly related to key properties in electrochemistry, such as storage capacities in general, and open circuit voltages (OCVs), in particular. A wider range of adsorption strength is predicted depending on the choice of non-local vdW-DF functionals. Furthermore, the performance of vdW-DF functionals was found to be independent of the choice of pseudopotentials used and especially if the choice is revPBE. Additionally, an excellent agreement is found between the Gaussian, VASP, and QE codes. Moreover, the h-BP is found to be an exceptional anode material for alkali batteries which can compete with any other available anode material. The small change in the adsorption energies as a function of increasing concentration of alkali atoms is a unique characteristic of h-BP. The exceptional 1283 mAh/g storage capacity not only for Li but in contrary with the previous study, also for Na in addition to the 642 mAh/g for K at vdW-DF/DZP level makes it a prominent candidate to be used as anode material. The average open circuit voltage for Li, Na, and K was also found to be in superb range. However, the values are found to be sensitive to the choice of functional, and in some cases, the storage capacity can be predicted as high as twice of the actual values. Therefore, the accurate description of the interaction is crucial and this study can be used to further refine the non-local DFT functionals. Moreover, by virtue of these properties, h-BP can be the best choice to be used as an anode material not only in LIBS but also in SIBs and KIBs.

Two iron(II)-rhenium(IV) compounds of general formula [FeII(dmf)6][ReIVX6] [X = Cl (1) and Br (2); dmf = N,N-dimethylformamide] have been prepared and characterized. X-ray powder diffraction measurements on samples of 1 and 2 support the same structure for both systems. The crystal structure of 1 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 crystallizes in the triclinic system with space group Pī. Each iron(II) is six-coordinate and bonded to six oxygens from six dmf molecules building a distorted octahedral environment. Rhenium(IV) is six-coordinate by six halide anions in an almost regular octahedral geometry. The magnetic properties were investigated from variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on microcrystalline samples of 1 and 2, whose experimental data were reproduced by a model of two isolated paramagnetic centers [S = 2 (FeII) and S = 3/2 (ReIV)] with large values of zero-field splitting (zfs) parameter. The compound semiconductor HgI2 has been widely studied and employed as a material for ionizing radiation detection. Monocrystal growth is an intricate method for obtaining materials for this application. With the aim of finding a simpler and more effective way to develop ionizing radiation detectors, we employed HgI2 nanostructures subjected to a hydrothermal treatment and then pressed for this purpose. In the synthesis procedure, aqueous solutions of Hg(NO3)2 and NaI were mixed until their reaction completed and the suspension obtained was then placed in a homemade autoclave and heated at 120 °C for 2, 10 or 24 h. We confirmed the HgI2 tetragonal phase by powder XRD in all cases, independently of the synthesis conditions employed. Nanoparticles were characterized by their size and morphology by TEM. We used the HgI2 nanostructures to obtain a pellet by applying 0.7 GPa of pressure at room temperature. The pellet was then used to construct the detector, and we studied the electrical properties of the detector and its response to 241Am sources of different exposure rates. The resistivity and signal-to-noise ratio obtained are of the order of those reported for HgI2 detectors assembled with monocrystals. The results obtained in this work encourage us to work further on this topic, improving the method, scaling the detector's size and studying its spectrometric grade.
