<p>Major changes are needed both with regard to what we eat and how food is produced. The latter is the focus of the present research, specifically the rise of controlled environment agriculture. In this context, empirical research is presented on consumer attitudes to vertical farming (VF) (i.e., indoor plant factory with artificial lighting), conducted in four countries (USA, UK, Singapore, and China) using online surveys (637–683 participants per country with matched gender and age group distributions). A multi-method research approach was<br />used, including a novel methodology of text highlighting, which requires that participants read a descriptive text about VF with mentions of pros and cons and use highlighter functions to select aspects of the text that they ‘like’ and ‘dislike’. Based on the information provided in the text, attitudes towards VF were largely positive in the four countries. The characteristics of VF that aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals were identified as key drivers of positive attitudes (i.e., higher yield, reduction of carbon emissions, and securing<br />access to food). On the other hand, high energy use and premium prices contributed to negative attitudes about VF. Although the majority of participants responded to the text with an overall positive attitude towards VF, there were smaller groups of participants in every country who expressed a negative or neutral/ambivalent attitude. These between-segment differences were larger than cross-cultural differences, although the latter did exist, particularly for selected aspects of VF. For example, Chinese participants tended to be the least negative about the use of robots to help planting and harvesting. Future research is needed to understand consumer responses to aspects VF not covered in the text (e.g., powering VF with renewable energy, product range), and consumer insights about VF should be sought in other countries.</p>

The glycobiology of the cestodes, a class of parasitic flatworms,<br />is still largely unexplored. An important cestode<br />species is Echinococcus granulosus, the tissue-dwelling<br />larval stage of which causes hydatid disease. The E. granulosus<br />larva is protected from the host by a massive<br />mucin-based extracellular matrix termed laminated layer<br />(LL). We previously reported (Biochemistry 48:11678,<br />2009) the molecular structure of the most abundant LL<br />O-glycans, comprising up to six monosaccharide residues.<br />These are based on Cores 1 and 2, in cases elongated by a<br />chain of Galpβ1-3 residues, which can be capped by<br />Galpα1-4. In addition, the Core 2 GlcNAcp residue can<br />be decorated with the Galpα1-4Galpβ1-4 disaccharide.<br />Larger glycans also detected contained additional HexNAc<br />residues that could not be explained by the structural repertoire<br />described above. In this work, we elucidate, by<br />mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance<br />(NMR), six additional glycans from the E. granulosus LL<br />between six and eight residues in size. Their structures are<br />related to those already described but in cases bear GlcNAcpβ1-6 or Galpα1-4Galpβ1-4GlcNAcpβ1-6 as ramifications<br />on the core Galpβ1-3 residue. We also obtained<br />evidence that noncore Galpβ1-3 residues can be similarly<br />ramified. Thus, the new motif together with the previous<br />information may explain all the glycan compositions<br />detected in the LL by MS. In addition, we show that the<br />anti-Echinococcus monoclonal antibody E492 (Parasite<br />Immunol 21:141, 1999) recognizes Galpα1-4Galpβ1-<br />4GlcNAcp (the blood P1-antigen motif). This explains the<br />antibody’s reactivity with a range of Echinococcus tissues,<br />as the P1-motif is also carried on non-LL N-glycans and<br />glycolipids from this genus.<br />

The larvae of the cestodes belonging to the genus Echinococcus dwell primarily in mammalian liver. They are protected by the laminated layer (LL), an acellular mucin-based structure. The glycans decorating these mucins constitute the overwhelming majority of molecules exposed by these larvae to their hosts. However, their decoding by host innate immunity has not been studied. Out of 36 mammalian innate receptors with carbohydrate-binding domains, expressed as Fc fusions, only the mouse Kupffer cell receptor (KCR; CLEC4F) bound significantly to the Echinococcus granulosus LL mucins. The receptor also bound the Echinococcus multilocularis LL. Out of several synthetic glycans representing Echinococcus LL structures, the KCR bound strongly in particular to those ending in Galα1-4Galβ1-3 or Galα1-4Galβ1-4GlcNAc, both characteristic LL carbohydrate motifs. LL carbohydrates may be optimized to interact with the KCR, expressed only in liver macrophages, cells known to contribute to the tolerogenic antigen presentation that is characteristic of this organ.<br /><br />

The inositol pyrophosphate messengers (PP-InsPs) are emerging as an important class of cellular regulators. These molecules have been linked to numerous biological processes, including insulin secretion and cancer cell migration, but how they trigger such a wide range of cellular responses has remained unanswered in many cases. Here, we show that the PP-InsPs exhibit complex speciation behaviour and propose that a unique conformational switching mechanism could contribute to their multifunctional effects. We synthesised non-hydrolysable bisphosphonate analogues and crystallised the analogues in complex with mammalian PPIP5K2 kinase. Subsequently, the bisphosphonate analogues were used to investigate the protonation sequence, metal-coordination properties, and conformation in solution. Remarkably, the presence of potassium and magnesium ions enabled the analogues to adopt two different conformations near physiological pH. Understanding how the intrinsic chemical properties of the PP-InsPs can contribute to their complex signalling outputs will be essential to elucidate their regulatory functions.

The electronic spectra of monooxo complexes of rhenium(V) with 1,2-benzenedithiolato (bdt2−), 3,4- toluenenedithiolato (tdt2−), maleonitriledithiolato (mnt2−), and 1,2-dithiooxalato (dto2−) ligands were investigated at the TD-DFT level employing several functionals and basis sets. The most important transitions are due to ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) with some minor contribution of ligand-tometal- ligand charge transfer (LMLCT). However, for [ReO(dto)2]− this statement does not hold because the transitions are due to metal-ligand-to-metal-ligand charge transfer (MLMLCT). This observation arises from the presence of the oxalate groups. These substituents increase the flexibility of this complex with respect to the complexes containing bdt2−, mnt2− and tdt2−. In these complexes, the C–C backbone imposes a rigid geometry, which leads to the occupied rhenium-orbitals lying energetically below the sulfur-based orbitals. For the complexes [ReO(bdt)2]−, [ReO(mnt)2]− and [ReO(tdt)2]−, the HOMO is a sulfur-based out-of-plane molecular orbital. However, the HOMO of [ReO(dto)2]− shows a high contribution of the rhenium dx 2 −y 2 and in-plane sulfur-centered orbitals. The comparison of the results obtained with several functionals clearly point to the PBE1PBE/LANL2DZ method as the best TD-DFT method to investigate the electronic spectra of monooxo complexes of Re(V) with thiolato ligands. The results obtained with larger basis sets suggest that the agreement between experiment and theory was due to an error cancellation between basis set incompleteness and deficiencies in the DFT methods.

The reaction of K2ReCl6 with 1,2-bis(2,3-dimercaptobenzamido)ethane (H4-1), and 1,2-bis(2,3-dimercaptobenzamido) benzene (H4-2) in the presence of Na2CO3 in methanol affords dinuclear complexes of ReV. Experimental evidence supports the presence of self-assembled complexes with two {Re(S2C6H3)3} units connected in a triple-stranded fashion. Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies on geometry and electronic properties were conducted employing the hybrid B3LYP and PBE1PBE functionals. The helical (DD and KK) and meso-helical (DK) isomers were considered. For the helicate complexes included in this study, differences in the stability of the isomers were observed originating in different steric and strain interactions between the three ligand strands. The geometries at the minimum exhibit a distorted trigonal-prismatic coordination environment at the metal centers. Natural bond orbitals (NBO) analysis indicates the presence of Re–S bonds which are strongly polarized toward the non-metal. Time-Dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations were performed for a further understanding of the optical spectra. The calculations show the occupied 5d orbitals of the rhenium lying beneath occupied sulfur-based MOs. The general features of the electronic spectra in the visible region are reasonably reproduced by the calculations. The analysis of molecular orbitals also allows the assignment of the origin for all experimentally detected absorption bands. In the high-energy region of the spectrum the absorptions are attributed to ligand-to-metal–ligand charge transfer (LMLCT), in which sulfur-based orbitals and unoccupied orbitals at the rhenium atom and the benzene-o-dithiolato groups are involved. Also in the blue region, shoulders originating from LMLCT are observed

<p>El procedimiento seguido es el de J. F. McClendon y A. C. Bratton, Ind. Eng. Chem. Anal. Ed., 10. 600 (1938), ligeramente modificado según "Métodos para el examen de las aguas y de los líquidos cloacales. Yodo". A. XXI, M.O.P., Obras Sanitarias de la Nación.</p>
<p>El método es en esquema el siguiente. Se concentra la muestra (250-1.000 ml según el contenido en yodo), previamente alcalinizada hasta un volumen de 50ml; se filtra, se evapora a sequedad, se calcina sin llegar a la fusión; el residuo es disuelto en agua; se pasa al aparato de destilación y se agrega ácido sulfúrico y solución de alumbre férrico; se destila en corriente de aire y se recoge el destilado en agua de bromo saturada, donde el yodo liberado por la acción de la sal férrica en medio ácido es oxidado a yodato; el exceso de bromo es eliminado y se valora el yodato con yoduro y tiosulfato de sodio, usando almidón como indicador.</p>
<p>Todas las etapas del procedimiento son sometidas a un contralor riguroso: sensibilidad de almidón, oxidación de yodo a yodato con bromo, destilación y calcinación.</p>
<p>Estos ensayos permiten extraer la siguiente conclusión: la destrucción de la sustancia orgánica del agua por calcinación abierta a 300º C conduce a pérdidas de yodo comprendidas entre 10 y 20%.</p>
<p>Este inconveniente es evitado eliminando la calcinación; la destrucción de la sustancia orgánica es entonces realizada por medio del peróxido de hidrógeno, durante la destilación. Debido a que parte del peróxido de hidrógeno destila sin descomponerse, el destilado es recogido en solución de carbonato de sodio.</p>
<p>El método modificado es también sometido a un contralor riguroso: sensibilidad del almidón en presencia de sulfato de sodio, influencia del peróxido de hidrógeno en la concentración del destilado, destilación en presencia de peróxido de hidrógeno.</p>
<p>Se describen detalladamente los reactivos, aparatos y marcha de la operación.</p>
<p>Las determinaciones realizadas en el agua de consumo de Montevideo permiten establecer que la precisión del método es del orden del 2%.</p>

Immuno polymerase chain reaction (IPCR) is an analytical technology based on the excellent affinity and specificity of antibodies combined with the powerful signal amplification of polymerase chain reaction (PCR), providing superior sensitivity to classical immunoassays. Here we present a novel type of IPCR termed phage anti-immunocomplex assay real-time PCR (PHAIA-PCR) for the detection of small molecules. Our method utilizes a phage anti-immunocomplex assay (PHAIA) technology in which a short peptide loop displayed on the surface of the M13 bacteriophage binds specifically to the antibody−analyte complex, allowing the noncompetitive detection of small analytes. The phagemid DNA encoding this peptide can be amplified by PCR, and thus, this method eliminates hapten functionalization or bioconjugation of a DNA template while providing improved sensitivity. As a proof of concept, two PHAIA-PCRs were developed for the detection of 3-phenoxybenzoic acid, a major urinary metabolite of some pyrethroid insecticides, and molinate, a herbicide implicated in fish kills. Our results demonstrate that phage DNA can be a versatile material for IPCR development, enabling universal amplification when the common element of the phagemid is targeted or specific amplification when the real time PCR probe is designed to anneal the DNA encoding the peptide. The PHAIA-PCRs proved to be 10-fold more sensitive than conventional PHAIA and significantly faster using magnetic beads for rapid separation of reactants. The assay was validated with both agricultural drain water and human urine samples, showing its robustness for rapid monitoring of human exposure or environmental contamination.

<p>Some unique subclasses of Camelidae antibodies are devoid of the light chain, and the antigen binding site is comprised exclusively of the variable domain of the heavy chain (VHH). Although conventional antibodies dominate current assay development, recombinant VHHs have a high potential as alternative reagents for the next generation of immunoassay. We expressed VHHs from an immunized alpaca and developed a VHH-based immunoassay using 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA), a major metabolite of pyrethroid insecticides as a model system. A phage VHH library was constructed, and seven VHH clones were selected by competitive binding with 3-PBA. The best immunoassay developed with one of these VHHs showed an IC50 of 1.4 ng/mL (limit of detection (LOD) = 0.1 ng/mL). These parameters were further improved by using the phage borne VHH, IC50 = 0.1 ng/mL and LOD = 0.01 ng/mL. Both assays showed a similar tolerance to methanol and dimethylsulfoxide up to 50% in assay buffer. The assay was highly specific to 3-PBA and its 4- hydroxylated derivative, 4-hydroxy 3-PBA, (150% cross reactivity) with negligible cross reactivity with other tested structural analogues, and the recovery from spiked urine sample ranged from 80 to 112%. In conclusion, a highly specific and sensitive VHH for 3-PBA was developed using sequences from immunized alpaca and phage display technology for antibody selection</p>

Peptides isolated from phage display libraries are powerful reagents for small-molecule immunoassay; however, their application as phage-borne peptides is significantly limited by the biological nature of the phage. Here, we present the use of lysine scaffold to prepare a series of different valence peptides to serve as replacements for phage-borne peptides. Benzothiostrobin was selected as a model analyte, the cyclic benzothiostrobin-peptidomimetic in the form of monomer, dendrimer-like dimer, and tetramer were designed and synthesized. Compared with the monomer, the affinity of dendrimer-like dimer and tetramer increased 1.87 and 13.6 times, respectively, as determined by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). A novel inner filter effect immunoassay (IFE-IA) with positive readout was developed for benzothiostrobin detection utilizing the peptidomimetics attached to upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as energy donor and monoclonal antibody (mAb)-labeled urchin-like gold nanoflowers (AuNFs) as energy absorber, respectively. The sensitivity of the assay based on dendrimer-like tetramer was approximately 6 and 3 times higher than monomer and dendrimer-like dimer, respectively. After optimization, 50% saturation of the signal (SC50) and detection range (SC10 to SC90) of the IFE-IA based on dendrimer-like tetramer were 11.81 ng mL–1 and 2.04–106.17 ng mL–1, respectively. The IFE-IA also shows good accuracy for the detection of benzothiostrobin in authentic samples.

There is a great demand for rapid tests that can be used on-site for the detection of small analytes, such as pesticides, persistent organic pollutants, explosives, toxins, medicinal and abused drugs, hormones, etc. Dipsticks and lateral flow devices, which are simple and provide a visual readout, may be the answer, but the available technology for these compounds requires a competitive format that loses sensitivity and produces readings inversely proportional to the analyte concentration, which is counterintuitive and may lead to potential misinterpretation of the result. In this work, proteinmultipeptide constructs composed of anti-immunocomplex peptides selected from phage libraries and streptavidin/avidin as core protein were used for direct detection of small compounds in a noncompetitive two-site immunoassay format that performs with increased sensitivity and positive readout. These constructs that we termed “nanopeptamers” allow the development of rapid point-of-use tests with a positive visual end point of easy interpretation. As proof of concept, lateral flow assays for the herbicides molinate and clomazone were developed and their performance was characterized with field samples.

<p>Controlled syntheses give<br />unique block oligomers with alternating<br />flexible ethylene glycol and rigid<br />perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PDI)<br />units. The number of rigid units vary<br />from n=1 to 10. PDI units were stitched<br />together by using efficient phosphoramidite<br />chemistry. The resulting<br />oligomers undergo folding in most solvents,<br />including chloroform. In their<br />ground state, these folded oligomers<br />were characterized by using Fourier<br />transform ion cyclotron resonance<br />mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS), NMR<br />spectroscopy, and electronic absorption<br />spectroscopy. FTICR-MS revealed the<br />exact masses of these sequence-controlled<br />oligomers, which confirmed the<br />chemical composition and validated<br />the synthetic strategy. The NMR neighboring<br />ring-current effect (NRE) indicates<br />the formation of cofacial p<br />stacks; the stacked aromatic rings have<br />nearly coaxial alignment akin to a<br />nanosoleniod. Nanosolenoidal shielding<br />in p stacks causes all aromatic protons<br />to shift upfield, whereas NOE in a<br />cyclic hetero-chromophoric dimer supports<br />a rotated, cofacial p-stacking orientation<br />separated by about 3.5 �.<br />Electron–phonon coupling is much<br />stronger than excitonic coupling in<br />these self-folded PDI oligomers; thus,<br />Franck–Condon factors dictate the observed<br />spectral features in visible spectra.<br />The absorbance spectrum exhibits<br />weak hypochromism due to p stacking<br />with increasing stacking units n. Finally,<br />ab initio calculations support the experimental<br />observations, indicating 3.5 �<br />cofacial spacing in which one molecule<br />is rotated 308 from the eclipsed orientation<br />and higher oligomers can adopt,<br />without a compensating energy penalty,<br />either the right/left-handed helices or<br />the 1,3-eclipsed structures. Both theory<br />and experiments validate the nano-psolenoids<br />and their novel photophysical<br />properties.</p>

Objectives: To confirm the influence of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) on selenium (Se) levels and prospectively evaluate the relationship between serum Se concentration [Se], glutathione peroxidase activity [GPx-3] and injury severity in patients at the time of intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Design: Prospective, observational study. Setting: Multidisciplinary University Hospital ICU. Patients and participants: A total of 36 ICU patients and 23 healthy volunteer subjects (HVS). Measurements and results: Healthy volunteer subjects were designated as controls (Group 1). ICU patients were divided into three groups: without SIRS (Group 2); with SIRS (Group 3); with SIRS and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) (Group 4). The latter groups had APACHE II scores [15. [GPx-3] and [Se] were determined by standard methods within the first 48 h of admission to ICU. Kruskal– Wallis and Mann–Whitney U test were used for analysis of non-parametric continuous variables. The predictive value of [Se] and [GPx-3] for SIRS was calculated using a receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis. In SIRS and MODS patients [GPx-3] and [Se] decreased significantly (P = 0.0001 and P = 0.002, respectively). After ICU admission [GPx-3] and [Se] had a predictive value for SIRS ([GPx-3] sensitivity: 90%, specificity: 86.2% (cut-off value: 0.5 U/mL); [Se]: sensitivity 90%, specificity 72.4% (cut-off value: 60 lg/L). [Se] had predictive value for ICU mortality (P = 0.034). Conclusions: Systemic inflammatory response syndrome and MODS were associated with early decreases in [Se] and [GPx-3]. Low [Se] and [GPx-3] after ICU admission had a predictive value for SIRS, which may aid future selection of patients who could benefit from Se supplementation.

High quality fruit are demanded by consumers across the globe. The presence of localized small necrotic areas within the flesh, which may or may not be visible at the surface of fruit (e.g., physiological disorders, bruises, rots), can negatively affect perception of fruit quality and consumers’ willingness to purchase/ consume. Research on how consumers’ visual attention is drawn to different symptoms is lacking, but offers the potential to understand how defects influence consumers’ decision-making. In this context, the aim of the present study was to evaluate consumers’ visual attention to defects in fruit and to evaluate the relationship between visual attention and rejection (i.e., decision not to re-purchase). Using apples as a case study, consumers (n = 123) completed two experimental tasks involving eye-tracking technology. First, consumers completed a free-viewing task, which included apple images with different severities of three defects (internal browning, bruising and cavities). Second, they saw seven apple images with different degrees of bruising and indicated their future purchase intention. In the apple images without defects, consumers mainly fixated their gaze on the core and the seeds of the apple. However, as the degree of symptoms increased, consumers shifted their attention and fixated their gaze on the area affected by bruises or disorders. Consumers’ visual attention toward the defects, and their future rejection of purchases of apples, increased with the severity of the defects. Using survival analysis, the relative areas of bruising that corresponded to rejection by 25% and 50% of consumers was estimated as 2.3 � 0.5% and 4.8 � 0.7%, respectively. The present work suggests that attentional capture of fruit disorders can predict consumers’ rejection and contribute to setting quality standards. Such standards effectively guide the fruit industries in consumer-led innovation and development of production systems.

Plasma concentration–time data obtained after an oral single dose of 500-mg valproic acid (VPA) in a delayed release formulation was used to model enterohepatic cycling of the drug. Fourteen healthy subjects (seven women and seven men) were enrolled, food intake was standardized, blood samples were withdrawn up to 48 h post dosing and VPA plasma concentrations were analyzed by HPLC–UV method. Secondary peaks of VPA were observed in almost all subjects. A population pharmacokinetic analysis with sex, weight, age and contraceptive therapy as possible covariates was performed. Women without contraceptive therapy presented a longer lag time, a lower VPA hepatic output and a higher reabsorbed fraction than men. Weight affected both volume of the central compartment and the absorption rate constant. Women under contraceptive therapy showed similar disposition parameters to men. Reabsorbed fraction of bioavailable dose was 46.2 % in women and 21.8 % in men, revealing important sex differences in drug hepatobiliar output. These results showed that VPA displays sex-related pharmacokinetic differences due to different metabolic and transporter-mediated disposition.

The structure of the novel cadmium phenanthroline thio­sulfate poly­[[(1,10-phenanthroline-[kappa]2N,N')­cadmium(II)]-[mu]3-thio­sulfato-[kappa]3S:S:O], [Cd(S2O3)(C12H8N2)]n, with a pentacoordinated Cd centre, is reported. It forms linear chains built up around a 21 axis and is isostructural with the known bi­pyridine homologue. The structure is also compared with a previously reported closely related mono­aqua monohydrated phase, where the Cd2+ cation is hexacoordinated. The incidence of weak C-H...O interactions in the determination of its general packing properties is discussed.

Glycerol dehydrogenase (GldA) from Escherichia coli BW25113, naturally catalyzes the oxidation of glycerol to dihydroxyacetone. It is known that GldA exhibits promiscuity towards short-chain C2-C4 alcohols. However, there are no reports regarding the substrate scope of GldA towards larger substrates. Herein we demonstrate that GldA can accept bulkier C6-C8 alcohols than previously anticipated. Overexpression of the gldA gene in the knockout background, E. coli BW25113 ΔgldA, was strikingly effective converting 2 mM of the compounds: cis dihydrocatetechol, cis-(1 S,2 R)− 3-methylcyclohexa-3,5-diene-1,2-diol and cis-(1 S,2 R)− 3-ethylcyclohexa-3,5- diene-1,2-diol, into 2.04 ± 0.21 mM of catechol, 0.62 ± 0.11 mM 3-methylcatechol, and 0.16 ± 0.02 mM 3-ethyl catechol, respectively. In-silico studies on the active site of GldA enlightened the decrease in product formation as the steric substrate demand increased. These results are of high interests for E. coli-based cell factories expressing Rieske non-heme iron dioxygenases, producing cis-dihydrocatechols, since such sough-after valuable products can be immediately degraded by GldA, substantially hampering the expected performance of the recombinant platform.

A summary of the resource.
A path to enhance the efficiency of photocatalytic devices is by doping the active semiconductor in order to maximize the light absorption. However, impurities could increase the recombination of photoinduced charge carriers, in order that a careful analysis on the effects of those impurities it is necessary. On this research, density functional theory calculations were applied to analyze the structure and electronic characteristics of B–doped and C+B–codoped TiO2(B) considering the lowest formation energy of substitutional impurities. Our calculations suggest that the swapping of a boron or carbon atom for an oxygen atom (B@O or C@O) is energetically more favorable than the replacement of titanium atoms. The obtained results seem to indicate that the boron substitution into O2C and O3C1 sites leads to its migration towards interstitial sites in both mono and codoping, thus causing a great geometrical distortion compared to pure TiO2(B). Furthermore, impurity states in the band gap were obtained after B@O doping and C+B–codoping, producing an improvement of the optical properties, so it can be assumed that this nanomaterial might act as a photoelectrode after an adequate design optimization that facilitates the charge carrier separation.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Natural products play an important role as a source not only of potential therapeutic drugs but also of starting materials for semisynthetic new medicines. The epoxyquinoid family, composed by cyclohexane epoxides and related structures, exhibit these characteristics without doubt. Since 2004, significant efforts have been devoted to the stereocontrolled synthesis of these molecules with different and interesting strategies. More than 50 works on this field have been published during this period of time. In addition, many of these polyoxygenated cyclohexenoids exhibit diverse and impressive bioactive shapes. This review aims to analyze the recent advances in the enantioselective processes that have been performed for the total syntheses of these target molecules. It includes a wide range of methodologies for the introduction of chirality either enzymatic or chemical ones. This summarizes microbial preparation of starting materials, lipase kinetic resolutions, use of compounds from the chiral pool, use of chiral auxiliaries and asymmetric catalysis. In a special section, syntheses of scyphostatin are also included.
