A major share of food waste is caused in consumer households. Globally, this share is expected to increase with growing middle classes in emerging countries. Consumer behaviour factors causing food waste differ across the various food handling stages from purchase to use, as well as for the individual and the specific situation in question. In order to tackle food waste in the household, knowledge on the type of food wasted, the cause of waste, and the situation in which it occurs is needed for different target groups. Little research so far has studied household consumer related food waste in emerging countries. This study explored food waste in consumer´s own accounts of a recent food waste incident in 540 Uruguayan households. It used a mixed-method approach composed of open-ended questions, which were analysed using content analysis. Differences in the frequency of mention of the identified categories between socioeconomic and sociodemographic groups were analysed. Results showed that leftovers and fresh vegetable and fruit were the categories most consumers recall wasting, and indicated that sub-optimality and prolonged storage were major reasons for discarding food. The higher the socioeconomic group, the greater the likelihood of wasting fresh produce, and the more often due to sub-optimality. Findings imply that avoidable food waste might increase with affluence levels. Public policies or collaborative public-private information or intervention campaigns directed at consumer households can more effectively contribute to decreasing food waste if targeted at the most relevant categories and causes of food waste.

Tropical fruits, such as cashew apple, acerola, and melon, can be used to obtain innovative juices with high contents of bioactive compounds. Technological processes are needed to ensure the safety of products during their shelf life. However, these processes can modify the sensory properties of the juice, which have an important role in consumer acceptance. From this perspective, this study aimed to evaluate consumer perception of the sensory characteristics of tropical mixed juice based on cashew apple, acerola, and melon obtained using different processing methods during cold storage at 4◦ C. Microbiological aspects were monitored during refrigerated storage at 4 ◦C. Samples were exposed to four technological processes: control (unprocessed), pasteurization (90 ◦C/1 min), and high-pressure processing: HHP1 (500 MPa/5 min) and HHP2 (520 MPa/2<br />min). Thirty fruit juice consumers participated in the characterization of mixed juices using rate-all-that-apply (RATA) questions. Samples were analyzed at zero, 14, and 28 days of storage at 4 ◦C. Data were analyzed by ANOVA, and Fisher’s test was used for post-hoc comparison of means and PCA. Results showed that 12 of the 22 RATA terms differed (p ≤ 0.05) regarding the mean perceived intensity, suggesting that consumers perceived<br />differences in the sensory characteristics of the juices. The first dimension of the PCA separated the pasteurized juices from the others. Pasteurized samples were characterized by yellow color, cooked aroma, cooked flavor, off aroma, off flavor, stale aroma, and stale flavor. On the other hand, the unprocessed (control) and pressurized (HPP1 and HPP2) juices were characterized by orange color, fruit aroma, fruit flavor, sweet aroma, fresh juice, and watery consistency. Results confirmed the suitability of the sensory characterization performed by consumers using RATA and the potential of HHP to obtain juices with sensory characteristics similar to the fresh product.

Nutritional warnings are intended to enable citizens to make informed choice by clearly identifying food products with excessive content of nutrients associated with noncommunicable diseases. The efficacy of this public policy is expected to improve if accompanied by communication campaigns that raise awareness of the existence of nutritional warnings, as well as encourage citizens to take them into account in decision making. Because ordinary citizens have been shown to generate significantly more creative and valuable ideas than advanced users and professional developers, the aim of the present work was to obtain qualitative, citizen co-created insights for the design of a communication campaign. An online study was conducted with 518 Uruguayan citizens, recruited using a Facebook advertisement. Participants were asked to answer a series of open-ended questions about how they would encourage other people to use the warnings for making their food choices, as well as the key contents of a communication campaign. Responses were analyzed using content analysis. Results showed that, according to the participants’ accounts, an effective public awareness campaign aimed at promoting the use of nutritional warnings in decision making should include three main concepts: (a) position warnings as a cue to action for improving eating habits by enabling informed choices; (b) emphasize the benefits of using the warnings for avoiding consumption of unhealthy food and, consequently, achieving a healthier diet and an improvement in health status and quality of life; and (c) increase the perceived susceptibility and severity of the negative consequences of consumption of foods with excessive content of sugar, fat, and sodium. A communication campaign based on these key concepts could contribute to increasing the efficacy of nutritional warnings

The visual appearance and olfactory cues of liquid soap can trigger powerful expectations and associations in consumers' mind, which largely influence purchase decisions and shape product experience. In this context, the aims of the present work were: (a) to study the effect of appearance (color and transparency) and fragrance on conceptual associations and expectations of liquid hand soap and (b) to evaluate if preference patterns moderate such effect. Eight samples of liquid hand soap were obtained following a full factorial design with three 2-level variables: fragrance (herbal vs. fruity), color (green vs. orange), and transparency (transparent vs. pearly). Samples were evaluated by 104 female participants, who rated their liking and used a check-all-that-apply question to describe the samples in terms of sensory characteristics, expected functional aspects of the product, and conceptual associations. Results showed that appearance and transparency did not influence consumer liking. However, fragrance had a significant effect on consumer liking, expectations and conceptual associations of liquid hand soap. The effect of fragrance on expectations and conceptual associations depended on consumer liking of the fragrance. In addition, pearly appearance did not influence liking but had a significant effect on consumer expectations regarding functional aspects of the liquid hand soap. Practical applications Consumers associated the fragrance they preferred with a higher cleansing ability and perceived skin improvement, as well as with more positive emotional and conceptual associations. Pearly appearance was positively associated with functional aspects of the soaps, such as cleansing and moisturizing effects.

The present research contributed to a better understanding of how check-all-that apply (CATA) questions work by examining the relationship between likelihood of selecting a term and perceived attribute intensity. Seven consumer studies were con ducted (147–157 people per study) using within-subjects experimental designs where participants twice evaluated the same set of stimuli on the same set of terms (or attributes), respectively with CATA questions and intensity scaling (7-point cate gory scale; 1 = “not at all,” 7 = “extremely”). As a function of perceived intensity, the average CATA citation frequency tended to follow a sigmoidal-like relationship where likelihood of selecting a CATA term increased more slowly at the extreme ends of the intensity scale (1–2 and 6–7) and linearly otherwise. This illuminates why for a given term, CATA questions are less suited for discriminating between samples that are of similar “low” or “high” intensity.

<p>The aim of the present work was to explore the influence of consumer characteristics on purchase decisions when facing<br />products with nutritional warnings a few days after their implementation in Uruguay. A non-probabilistic sample of 917<br />participants was obtained using an advertisement on social media. Participants were asked if they had seen the warning<br />signs when making their food purchases and if they had seen the warnings on any product they intended to buy. Participants<br />who answered affirmately (n= 616) were asked about their purchase decision by answering the question “What have you<br />done with the product?” using the following response options: ‘I purchased it anyway’, ‘I purchased a similar product with<br />fewer excess signs’, ‘I purchased a similar product without excess signs’, ‘I didn’t purchase the product or any similar one’.<br />Univariate and multivariate multinomial logistic regression models were used to explore the influence of individual variables on participants’ likelihood of having taken different decisions when facing a product with warnings. Results showed that participants older than 55 years were more likely to react to the warnings by purchasing a similar product with fewer warnings or by not purchasing any product. Likelihood of modifying purchase decisions due to the inclusion of the warnings was associated with a frequent consumption of natural and minimally processed foods and a low consumption frequency of ultra-processed products. These results provide insights to target efforts to promote the use of nutritional warnings in decision making.</p>

Astringency is one of the most important sensory characteristics of red wine. Although a hierarchically structured vocabulary to describe the mouthfeel sensations of red wine has been proposed, research on consumers' astringency vocabulary is lacking. In this context, the aim of this work was to gain an insight on the vocabulary used by wine consumers to describe the astringency of red wine and to evaluate the influence of wine involvement on consumers' vocabulary. One hundred and twenty-five wine consumers completed and on-line survey with five tasks: an open-ended question about the definition of wine astringency, free listing the sensations perceived when drinking an astringent wine, free listing the words they would use to describe the astringency of a red wine, a CATA question with 44 terms used in the literature to describe astringency, and a wine involvement questionnaire. When thinking about wine astringency consumers freely elicited terms included in the Mouth-feel Wheel, such as dryness and harsh. The majority of the specific sub-qualities of the Mouth-feel Wheel were not included in consumer responses. Also, terms not classified as astringency descriptors were elicited (e.g. acid and bitter). Only 17 out of the 31 terms from the Mouth-feel Wheel were used by more than 10% of participants when answering the CATA question. There were no large differences in the responses of consumer segments with different wine involvement. Results from the present work suggest that most of the terms of the Mouth-feel Wheel might not be adequate to communicate the astringency characteristics of red wine to consumers.

Nutritional warnings have emerged as a promising front-of-package nutrition labelling scheme to discourage consumption of products with high content of nutrients associated with non-communicable diseases. One of the objectives of this policy is to encourage the food industry to reformulate their products. However, information about consumers’ perception of reformulated products in the context of the implementation of this policy is still limited. The aim of this study was to assess the relative influence of different types of reformulation on consumers’ perceived healthfulness and purchase intention, using frankfurters as case study. A conjoint analysis was implemented considering a fractional factorial design involving 5 2-level variables: brand type (artisanal/industrial), sodium reduction (with/without), saturated fat reduction (with/without), fibre claim (with/without) and cholesterol claim (with/without). An online survey with 494 consumers was implemented one year after the implementation of nutritional warnings in Chile. Participants were randomly divided into two groups, one of which evaluated purchase intention (n = 249) and the other evaluated perceived healthfulness (n = 245). Data were analysed using analysis of variance and cluster analysis. Results showed that reformulated products without nutritional warnings for sodium and saturated fat were perceived as more healthful and had higher purchase intention scores than then regular counterparts. On the contrary, nutrient claims did not have a relevant effect on consumers’ perception. Heterogeneity in consumers’ reaction to the reformulated products was found and was mainly related to consumption frequency of the product category. Results provide insights for policy makers and food companies in countries considering the implementation of nutritional warnings.

<p>The present research contributed to the growing body of research regarding the use of emoji in sensory and consumer research by filling an acknowledged knowledge gap. Its specific aim was to explore the meaning of emoji in a food-related context. The empirical approach involved 357 consumers who were tasked with writing a social media post or text message relating to a situation involving eating/drinking which was to be centered around a specific emoji. A total of 21 facial emoji were<br />included in the research. As expected, emoji were used to convey different meanings, including degree of liking/disliking, emotional associations, gestures and expressions.<br />The emoji were also used as part of messages describing negative and positive disconfirmation of expectations, which points to the importance of measuring expectations in a food-related context. Two emoji were identified as unsuitable for future research due to their nonconsensual meaning ( and ).</p>

The aim of this work was to evaluate consumer visual processing of food labels when evaluating the salt content of pan bread labels and to study the influence of label design and nutritional labelling format on consumer attention. A total of 16 pan bread labels, designed according to a full factorial design, were presented to 52 participants, who were asked to decide whether the sodium content of each label was medium or low, while their eye movements were recorded using an eye tracker. Results showed that most participants looked at nutrition labels and the traffic light system to conclude on the salt content of the labels. However, the average percentage of participants who looked at the actual sodium content was much lower. Nutrition information format affected participants’ processing of nutrition information. Among other effects, the inclusion of the traffic light system increased participants’ attention towards some kind of nutrition information and facilitated its processing, but not its understanding.

Nutritional warnings are rapidly gaining relevance, particularly in the region of the Americas, as a front-of-package nutrition labelling scheme that facilitate the identification of products with high content of nutrients associated with non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Several graphic designs are being developed as countries discuss the implementation of nutritional warnings, which makes it necessary to develop research to evaluate their efficacy. In this context, the aim of the present work was to compare the efficacy of a series of nutritional warnings that are being considered by Brazilian national authorities for the country with two of the most studied schemes: the guidelines daily amounts (GDA) and the traffic light system. Two studies were conducted. In the first one, visual search was conducted with 62 participants to evaluate the time needed by them to identify the schemes on food labels and to identify whether a product had high nutrient content. In the second study, an online survey with 1932 participants was used to evaluate their ability to use FOP nutrition labelling schemes to correctly identify the most healthful product in a set, as well as high nutrient content in a product. In addition, the influence of FOP nutrition labelling schemes on perceived healthfulness was evaluated. Finally, consumers’ perception of the schemes was gathered using an open-ended question. Results confirmed the advantages of nutritional warnings compared to the GDA and the traffic-light system to facilitate the identification of products with high content of nutrients associated with NCDs. In addition, the use of familiar signs frequently used to convey a ‘warning message’ outperformed other unfamiliar signs in terms of their ability to facilitate the interpretation of nutrition information. The inclusion of front of pack (FOP) nutrition labels is one of the strategies that has been proposed to encourage people to make healthful food choices, helping to cope with the increasing burden of overweight and obesity among adults and children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different FOP labels on Brazilian children and parents’ healthfulness perception. Children aged 6–12 years (n = 318) and parents (n = 278) with different socio-economic status rated their perceived healthfulness of eight food products targeted at children using a 7-point scale (1 = not healthful and 7 = very healthful). Participants were randomly allocated into one of the three groups of FOP nutrition labels: Daily Guideline Amounts (GDA), Traffic Light System (TLS) and warning system. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance. For parents, products with the warning system were rated significantly less healthful than those containing the GDA, whereas the TLS did not significantly differ from the other two systems. Age and socio-economic status influenced the effect of FOP labels on children’s perceived healthfulness. Only 9–12 years old children from middle/high socio-economic status were influenced by FOP labels: the warning system and TLS reduced healthfulness perception of frosted corn flakes compared to the GDA system. These results suggest that directive and semi-directive FOP have the potential to modify healthfulness perception of products targeted at children and stress the need to study the modulating effect of individual variables such as age and socio-economic status on the perception of FOP labels.

A large body of evidence assessing the effectiveness of front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labeling exists. Most experimental studies have been conducted with fictitious products. However, consumers’ perception depends on several products extrinsic factors such as brand. Understanding how strong brand associations influence the effectiveness of FOP nutrition labeling schemes may be crucial to informing policymaking. In this context, the aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of five different variants of nutritional warnings labels (black magnifier, red magnifier, black octagon, black triangle, and red circle) on consumers’ choice of commercial products, compared with two FOP nutrition labeling schemes: the guidelines daily amounts (GDAs) system and the traffic light system (TLS). An online randomized controlled trial with 1,932 participants was used to evaluate the effect of FOP nutrition labeling on participants’ choices in eight sets of three commercial products, available in the Brazilian marketplace. A multinomial logistic regression model was used to evaluate the influence of FOP nutrition labeling on participants’ likelihood of selecting the different products in the choice task. Results showed that nutritional warnings and the TLS significantly increased the likelihood of selecting none of the products instead of the least healthful product, or a healthier product, in at least one of the product categories compared with the GDA. Warnings tended to have a larger effect, suggesting their potential to encourage healthier food choices.

This research was motivated by the sustainable food transition and focused on plant-based (PB) alternatives to yoghurt, cheese, eggs and fish (salmon). An online study was conducted with 1667 consumers from the United Kingdom who were omnivores. Among participants, 24 % were restricted omnivores (or flexitarians) and made some efforts to reduce their animal food intake. Written names were used as product stimuli and varied according to protein type (PB or animal-based). Compared with animal foods, the findings revealed a strong negative perception of PB variants that spanned the four product categories and seven response variables – overall appeal, healthy, affordable, good for the environment, tasty, natural, and versatile. Further, it extended to behavioural intention, where willingness to eat the PB variants was much lower than for the animal-based counterparts. The effect of nutrition and/or ingredient information on product perceptions and behavioural intent was examined, but no major effect was found. When participants were segmented according to their stated willingness to transition to a vegetarian diet, those with a higher willingness (~1/3 of the total sample) perceived the PB variants more positively than those with lower transition willingness. This latter group (19 % of participants) also showed a significantly higher willingness to eat the PB food alternatives. Collectively, the findings contribute to the accumulating evidence that PB alternatives to animal foods may face many barriers to uptake among consumers who are currently not open to major dietary changes towards sustainability.

The study aimed at investigating the influence of four variables related to processing technology and formulation on consumer’s choice of fruit juice, and to explore the moderating effect of food technology neophobia (FTN). A choice‐conjoint task was implemented considering four variables: processing technology, added sugar, preservatives and cold pressing. Sixteen pairs of labels were presented to 369 Brazilian consumers to that indicate which of the products they would purchase. Then, they answered the FTN scales and a socio‐demographic questionnaire. Data were analysed using a logit model with random parameters. Results showed that cold pressing, pressurisation and the claims ‘no added sugar’ and ‘no preservatives’ had a positive effect on consumers’ choices, whereas the claim ‘not pressurised’ had a negative effect. The FTN moderated the effect of the variables on participants' choices of fruit juices. The main difference between groups of consumers with different level of neophobia (low, medium and high) was related to the effect of information about juice processing.

Here, Ana María Ferreira and colleagues discuss the interplay between the larval stages of Echinococcus granulosus and an important effector arm of immunity: the host complement system. During early infection, the parasite activates complement, and hence complement-dependent inflammatory responses. However, on differentiation into the hydatid cyst, the parasite exposes to the host a structure – the cyst wall – that does not activate complement strongly. Mechanisms inhibiting complement activation on the cyst wall have been elucidated, contributing to the understanding of how this large, persistent, tissue-dwelling pathogen controls the inflammatory response.

<p>Satisfaction with food-related life (SWFRL) is one component of satisfaction with life. Although researchers have identified associations between satisfaction with food-related life and specific food behaviours, it is still not clear how consumers conceptualize this complex construct. The aims of the present study were to explore consumers’<br />conceptualization of SWFRL, to compare how parents and adolescents in dual-headed households perceive SWFRL, and to identify aspects that would increase their SWFRL. One-hundred and sixty-four dual families<br />composed of mother, father, and at least one adolescent child between 10 and 17 years of age participated in the study. They completed a word association task with “Being satisfied with my food-related life” and completed<br />the sentence “I would be more satisfied with my food-related life if…”. Participants’ responses were aligned with the formal definition of SWFRL. References to specific foods and food characteristics were also mentioned in the<br />word association task. No significant differences were found between parents and adolescents in the frequency of mention of responses related to the identified categories and supra-categories, suggesting lack of differences in their conceptualization of SWFRL. Changes in eating behaviours and individuals’ resources for purchasing and preparing foods were regarded as the main factors that could increase SWFRL. Differences between family<br />members were found in some of the aspects associated with an increase in SWFRL. Results from this study can aid in the development of strategies for promoting changes in eating habits and increasing SWFRL, targeted at different family members.</p>

Vertical farming (alternatively, plant factories with artificial lighting) has the potential to contribute to sustainable food production and consumption and is relevant for several of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Already many consumers seem positive about vertical farming, but as fresh produce from vertical farming systems begin to become available to consumers, it is imperative that this positive attitude translates into purchase and consumption behaviour. In a multi-country study (USA, Australia, Germany and Singapore) where 2193 adult consumers (25–54 years old) took part in an online survey, the present quantitative research: i) investigated the aspects of vertical farming that are perceived positively and negatively by consumers, ii) measured stated intention to purchase lettuce from vertical farming, and iii) determined characteristics of vertical farming that are positive and negative drivers of intention to purchase. A largely positive attitude to vertical farming was confirmed, as well as the existence of smaller groups of people with negative and neutral/ ambivalent attitudes. Cross-cultural differences in attitudes to vertical farming also existed but these were relatively minor. On average, participants from USA were most positive, while those from Germany were least positive. Stated intention to purchase lettuce from vertical farming was ~70% (‘probably will buy’), and again stated likelihood was highest in USA (74%) and lowest in Germany (65%). Based on the findings from the analysis that linked likelihood to purchase lettuce from vertical farming to attitude to specific characteristics of vertical farming, strategies to promote consumption of produce from vertical farming should stress the contribution of the technology to a more sustainable development, including health, environmental and social aspects.

The microbial community dynamics of a functionally stable, well-mixed, methanogenic reactor fed with glucose were analyzed over a 605-day period. The reactor maintained constant pH and chemical oxygen demand removal during this period. Thirty-six rrn clones from each of seven sampling events were analyzed by amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) for the Bacteria andArchaea domains and by sequence analysis of dominant members of the community. Operational taxonomic units (OTUs), distinguished as unique ARDRA patterns, showed reproducible distribution for three sample replicates. The highest diversity was observed in the Bacteria domain. The 16S ribosomal DNABacteria clone library contained 75 OTUs, with the dominant OTU accounting for 13% of the total clones, but just 21Archaea OTUs were found, and the most prominent OTU represented 50% of the clones from the respective library. Succession in methanogenic populations was observed, and two periods were distinguished: in the first, Methanobacterium formicicumwas dominant, and in the second, Methanosarcina mazei and aMethanobacterium bryantii-related organism were dominant. Higher variability in Bacteria populations was detected, and the temporal OTU distribution suggested a chaotic pattern. Although dominant OTUs were constantly replaced from one sampling point to the next, phylogenetic analysis indicated that inferred physiologic changes in the community were not as dramatic as were genetic changes. Seven of eight dominant OTUs during the first period clustered with the spirochete group, although a cyclic pattern of substitution occurred among members within this order. A more flexible community structure characterized the second period, since a sequential replacement of aEubacterium-related organism by an unrelated deep-branched organism and finally by a Propionibacterium-like species was observed. Metabolic differences among the dominant fermenters detected suggest that changes in carbon and electron flow occurred during the stable performance and indicate that an extremely dynamic community can maintain a stable ecosystem function.

The oils from the fruit and kernel of two Uruguayan self-sown palmtrees have been studied (Arecastrum Romanzoffianum var. Australis (of which the vernacular name is "chiriva" or "pindo") and Butia Capitata var. Pulposa (of which the vernacular name is "butia").The flesh of two fruits contains practically not much oil:2,3 per cent for "chriva" and 43,7 per cent for "butia". These two oils are very rich in lauric acid (39,6 per cent on the average for both) and have similar to coconut and palm-kernel oil characteristics.

The myocardial perfusion agent technetium(2-carbomethoxy-2-isocyano-propane)6(99mTc-CPI) is unique from other cationic technetium isonitrile complexes in that it exhibits moderate washout from the heart and rapid hepatobiliary clearance in animal models and human volunteers. Dynamic imaging and HPLC analysis were performed in humans and guinea pigs to outline the pharmacological basis of its pharmacokinetics. It is proposed that the heart washout occurring after hydrolysis produces a neutral compound which is no longer retained by the negative cytosolic and mitochondrial membrane potentials in myocardial tissue.

Background: Vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has pro ven to be a successful strategy for prevent severe infections. CoronaVac and BNT162b2 are the most used vaccines worldwide, but their use in heterologous vaccination schedules is still subjected to evaluation. Methods: Fifty healthy individuals who received heterologous prime-boost vaccination with CoronaVac and BNT162b2 were enrolled in a post-vaccination serological follow-up longitudinal prospective study. We evaluated specific serum anti-receptor binding domain (RBD) IgG antibody levels, and their capacity to block RBD-ACE2 interaction with a surrogate neutralization assay. In 20 participants, we assessed anti body binding kinetics by surface plasmon resonance, and Fc-mediated functions by ADCC and ADCP reporter assays. Results: Our baseline seronegative cohort, displayed seroconversion after two doses of CoronaVac and an important decrease in serum anti-RBD IgG antibodies levels 80 days post-second dose. These levels increased significantly early after the third dose with BNT162b2, but 73 days after the booster we found a new fall. Immunoglobulin functionalities showed a similar behavior. Conclusions: The heterologous prime-boost vaccination with CoronaVac and BNT162b2 generated an impressive increase in serum anti-RBD specific antibody levels followed by a drop. Nevertheless, these titers remained well above those found in individuals only vaccinated with CoronaVac in the same elapsed time. Serum IgG levels showed high correlation with antibody binding analysis, their capacity to block RBD-ACE2 interaction, and Fc-effectors mechanisms. Our work sheds light on the humoral immune response to heterologous vaccination with CoronaVac and BNT162b2, to define a post vaccination correlate of protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection and to discuss the scheduling of future vaccine boosters in general population.

The aim of this study was to develop an immunological model of avian Aspergillosis by studying the humoral response of pigeons toAspergillus fumigatus antigens. Immunization was performed by administering weekly injections ofA. fumigatus extracts for 70 days (10 weeks). A new booster injection was given 270 days (9 months) following the last immunization. Results showed an earlyAspergillus-specific humoral immunoresponse which reached a maximum level at 42–63 days (6–9 weeks) post-immunization. Using the ELISA method, it could be observed thatA. fumigatus-specific IgG became elevated in the 2nd week and reached a maximum titre at 63rd day (9th week). In contrast,A. fumigatus-specific IgM levels appeared early showing maximum levels at the 2nd week, after which they declined despite the maintenance of antigenic stimulation. Termination of immunization resulted in the decrease of specific humoral immunoresponse with minimal levels of specific antibodies detectable 210 days (7 months) later. A booster injection given at 270 days (9 months) induced a very fastAspergillus-specific IgM and IgG immunoresponse, reaching levels of antibodies similar to those observed during the immunization period.

The use of inorganic nanoparticles as electron acceptors in hybrid solar cells has been increased. Some advantages compared to electron acceptors based on organic materials, are better electron transfer and lower production costs. We report the synthesis of ββ-HgS nanoparticles by a combination of solution method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as stabilizing agent, and hydrothermal treatment to diminish nanoparticles size and improve size distribution. The combination of a bottom-up and a top-down technique proved to be an appropriate method to obtain HgS nanoparticles with sizes in the order of the Bohr radius, essential for charge carrier generation in the solar cell. Additionally, PVP was replaced by hexadecanethiol (HDT). This exchange allowed the spin coating of a thin film of ββ-HgS dispersed in poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) onto a glass substrate. Characterizations showed that the HgS nanoparticles and the polymer were homogeneously mixed, but several aggregated HgS nanoparticles were still present. The lowering in the photoluminescence signal of the layer is an indicative of charge carrier transfer between the nanoparticles and P3HT. Our results are encouraging for the development of hybrid solar cells using ββ-HgS nanoparticles and P3HT. To our knowledge, these results are the first obtained for ββ-HgS nanoparticles, using a bottom-up/top-down approach. It is also the first time a nano-ββ-HgS/P3HT layer with promising properties as hybrid solar cell is reported.
