A summary of the resource.
Lipids are mainly solubilized by various families of lipid binding proteins which participate in their transport between tissues as well as cell compartments. Among these families, Hydrophobic Ligand Binding Proteins (HLBPs) deserve special consideration since they comprise intracellular and extracellular members, are able to bind a variety of fatty acids, retinoids and some sterols, and are present exclusively in cestodes. Since these parasites have lost catabolic and biosynthetic pathways for fatty acids and cholesterol, HLBPs are likely relevant for lipid uptake and transportation between parasite and host cells. Echinococcus granulosus antigen B (EgAgB) is a lipoprotein belonging to the HLBP family, which is very abundant in the larval stage of this parasite. Herein, we review the literature on EgAgB composition, structural organization and biological properties, and propose an integrated scenario in which this parasite HLBP contributes to adaptation to mammalian hosts by meeting both metabolic and immunomodulatory parasite demands.

A summary of the resource.
We studied the accumulation and depuration of microcystin-LR (MCLR) in the hepatopancreas of the crab Neohelice granulata fed twice weekly with either non toxic or MCLR-producing Microcystis aeruginosa (strain NPDC1 or NPJB, respectively) during seven weeks. We also analyzed MCLR effects on the oxidative stress- and detoxification-related variables, superoxide dismutase and glutathione-S-transferase activities, and the levels of reduced glutathione and lipid peroxidation. Hepatopancreas MCLR content slightly increased during the first three weeks, up to 8.81±1.84ngg(-1) wet tissue mass (WTM) and then started to decrease to a minimum at the seventh week (p<0.05 with respect to that in the first week). TBARS levels were about 55% higher in treated than in control N. granulata during the first three weeks of the experimental period. GSH content became 50% lower than in control individuals during weeks 6 and 7. SOD activity was increased by about from week 3 to 7 in treated crabs with respect to control ones, while GST activity was about 70% higher in treated than in control crabs from week 4 to week 7 Our data suggest that in the hepatopancreas of N. granulata MCLR accumulation and oxidative damage are limited and reversed by detoxification-excretion and antioxidant mechanisms. The activation of these defensive mechanisms becomes evident at 3-4 weeks after the start of the intoxication.

xidative stress (OS) is a potential molecular mechanism for lead-induced toxicities, yet, we have limited understanding of the relation between low-level lead (Pb) exposure and OS, especially in children. This cross-sectional study examines the association between blood lead level (BLL) and two OS markers-urinary F2-8α isoprostane or isoprostane (a marker of lipid peroxidation) and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxy-Guanosine or 8-OH-dG (a marker of DNA damage) in 211 children, aged 5-8 years, from Montevideo, Uruguay. The role of dietary intakes of vitamin C and zinc in modifying the relation between BLL and OS was also examined. The mean (SD) BLL of the study children was 4.7 (2.2) µg/dL, with 30.2% children having BLL ≥5 µg/dL, the current reference level set by the US Centre for Disease Control for identifying, monitoring and management of children with elevated BLL. In covariate-adjusted analysis, there was a weak positive association between BLL and urinary isoprostane (adjusted for specific gravity) [β=0.09, p<0.1]. No association was found between children's BLL and urinary 8-OH-dG. Interactions between dietary intakes of vitamin C or zinc and BLL on OS biomarkers were not consistent. However, when BLL and vitamin C or BLL and zinc were modeled together, BLL was independently associated with isoprostane concentration [β=0.10, p<0.05] but vitamin C or zinc intake was not. These findings suggest that there may be a potential adverse effect of BLL on OS in children with low-level Pb exposure. There is a need to study the effects of Pb on other OS measures, as well as the role of OS in mediating low-level Pb toxicity on functional outcomes.

Crown ethers and monoazacrown ethers supported onto well defined cobalt and Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles have been prepared and used as magnetically recoverable extracting materials for Pb2+ from aqueous and organic solutions. The assembly of the functional nanoparticles involves the integration of the complexing units by means of a copper-catalysed alkyne–azide cycloaddition reaction leading to a 1,2,3-triazole linker. The same binding motifs have been also used to functionalise polystyrene (PS) and polystyrene–polyethyleneglycol (PS–PEG) resins, and the resulting materials were also employed in the removal of Pb2+ from solutions. The relative merits of these two approaches are compared.

A summary of the resource.
The absolute configuration of the title compound, C10H16O4, determined as 3aS,4S,5R,7aR on the basis of the synthetic pathway, was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The mol-ecule contains a five- and a six-membered ring that adopt twisted and envelope conformations, respectively. The dihedral angle between the mean planes of the rings is 76.80 (11)° as a result of their cis-fusion. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by two pairs of O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming chains along [010]. These chains are further connected by weaker C-H⋯O inter-actions along [100], creating (001) sheets that inter-act only by weak van der Waals forces.

¿Es el acetato de carquejilo un quimiomarcador válido para las «carquejas» Baccharis sect. Caulopterae (Asteraceae)?. Las «carquejas» (Baccharis sección Caulopterae) son ampliamente conocidas por sus propiedades medicinales. Publicaciones previas postulan al acetato de carquejilo como quimiomarcador de B. trimera, pero nuestros estudios detectaron la presencia de poblaciones sin dicho compuesto, así como su presencia en otras especies de la sección. Lo anterior niega el papel del acetato de carquejilo como marcador específico para B. trimera.

A set of new aryloxy-quinones were synthesized and evaluated in vitro against the epimastigote form of Trypanosoma cruzi and their unspecific cytotoxicity was tested on murine macrophages J-774 cells. Most of these novel compounds were found to be much more potent and selective than the standard drug nifurtimox. Interestingly, 2-phenoxy-naphthoquinone 3b displayed a remarkable nanomolar inhibitory activity, IC50 = 20 nM, and a high selectivity index, SI = 625. The Epc1 was determined for the most interesting compounds and no correlation with the trypanosomicidal effect was found. Therefore, an in silico study was carried out to obtain a pharmacophoric model and quantitative structure–trypanosomicidal activity relationship. The designed pharmacophore recognized the more potent and selective molecules, exhibiting five pharmacophoric features. A correlation coefficient R2 of 0.99 of pIC50 plotted against the predicted values indicated that the 3D-QSAR equation could be applied to further predictions of newly designed trypanosomicidal compounds

Beehive products could be powerful monitors of pesticide residues originating in agroecosystems during production cycles. Their ready availability provides enough samples to perform analytical determinations, but their chemical complexity makes residue analysis a real challenge. Taking advantage of the plasticity of QuEChERS coupled to LC-MS/MS, validated methodologies were developed for bees, honey, beeswax, and pollen and applied to real samples for the simultaneous determination of 19 of the most employed pesticides in intensive cropping fields. Beehives placed in Uruguayan agroecosystems accumulated the pesticides thiacloprid, imidacloprid, methomyl, carbaryl, hexythiazox, azoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin, tebuconazole, and haloxyfop-methyl at 0.0001–0.01 mg/kg levels. The oscillations on the amount and occurrence of residue findings for specific apiaries were correlated statistically with the sampling season and the agroecosystem where the beehives were located, showing the potential of bees and bee products to record relevant information to survey the chemicals applied in their surroundings.

Monitoring of veterinary drug residues in foods is often conducted using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Results have high economic stakes for producers, but the ions monitored are usually selected due to signal intensities without structural interpretation. In this study, the ion transitions were characterized by high-resolution mass spectrometry.
The 62 veterinary drugs from the LC/MS/MS method consisted of sulfonamides, β-lactams, phenicols, macrolides, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and corticosteroids. They were individually infused into a quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF) mass spectrometer using electrospray ionization (ESI) operated in positive mode. The MS and collision-induced dissociation (CID) MS/MS spectra for each analyte were obtained for structural elucidation. The Q-TOF instrument was calibrated to obtain a mass accuracy error <5 ppm for the MS and MS/MS spectra.
The use of high-resolution ESI-Q-TOF-MS for the generation of the MS/MS product ions allowed for the determination of chemical formulae for the analytes, some of which led to new findings. Assigned structures were based on rational interpretation of the most stable possible products with comparison with the scientific literature. In difficult cases, isotopically labeled drugs or hydrogen/deuterium (H/D) exchange experiments were used to help confirm the structures of the product ions.
The use of ESI-Q-TOF-MS in this study has allowed structure elucidation of 186 MS/MS product ions previously selected for the LC/MS/MS analysis of 62 veterinary drugs. This serves to reduce the chances of false positives and negatives in the monitoring program, and provides justification and defense in regulatory enforcement actions.

Differences in sexual signals among species are common, and may influence mate recognition and reproductive isolation. In scorpions, behavioural mechanisms and other sexual signals involved in mate selection and reproductive isolation have been scarcely studied. In this paper, we compare different male sexual signals between two distant populations of the scorpion Bothriurus bonariensis, one located in Uruguay and the other in Central Argentina. We compare sexual behaviours from intra-populations and inter-populations matings. In addition, we extent this comparison to the secreted compounds and morphology of the exocrine glands located on the dorsal side of the telson in this species. Males of B. bonariensis performed stimulatory behaviours to the female with different frequency of occurrence and duration in the two populations. Chemical analyses of the glandular extracts showed that Uruguayan males present compounds which are absent in males of Argentinian population. In addition, we observed that in inter-population matings, stimulatory behaviours had intermediate patterns to intra-population matings. However, males failed to achieve a successful sperm transfer with females of different population. Mechanisms of sexual isolation between these two distant populations of B. bonariensis apparently seem to have evolved due to divergence in allopatry. The differences in stimulatory levels during courtship between the two populations studied here give evidence for an early behavioural divergence promoted by sexual selection.

A summary of the resource.
We have developed new surfactant agents based on hydrolyzed soybean proteins using papain, and we have studied their ability to form and stabilize emulsions. The interfacial behavior and the emulsifying properties were correlated to the structural changes that the proteins underwent. The hydrolysis reaction was stopped by dropping to pH 2 in one case, or rapidly dropping the temperature to -18ºC in the other. The structural and functional properties of the obtained products depended on the way the papain hydrolysis of the soy proteins was stopped. Hydrolysis did not have a beneficial effect on the emulsifying properties of those hydrolysates that were stopped by freezing. For all the degrees of hydrolysis we studied, the emulsifying properties of the isolates were significantly improved when the hydrolysis reaction was stopped by dropping to pH 2

Microwave Assisted Extraction and a modified CEN-QuEChERS methodology were evaluated as extraction and clean up procedures for the simultaneous analysis of 42 organophosphate pesticides in yerba mate (Ilex paraguaiensis). The obtained extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography using a flame photometric detector. Linearity, recovery percentages, relative standard deviations, detection and quantification limits and matrix effects were determined according to DG-SANCO guidelines for both methods. At 0.2 and 0.5 mg/kg the evaluated methods showed percentages recoveries between 70 and 120% for most of the analytes. Using Microwave Assisted Extraction methodology, 33 pesticide residues could be properly analyzed whereas only 27 could be determined with the proposed modified QuEChERS. All relative standard deviation were below 18% except for omethoate and disulfoton sulfone when evaluated by the modified QuEChERS. The limits of detection in both methodologies were 0.2 mg/kg for most of the analyzed compounds. The average detection limit for QuEChERS was 0.04 mg/kg. For 19 of the analytes determined through Microwave Assisted Extraction the lowest validated level were 0.004 mg/kg. Signal suppression/enhancement was observed for most of the pesticides, thus matrix-matched calibration curves were used for quantification. The Microwave Assisted Extraction and QuEChERS procedures studied could detect the organophosphate pesticides above the MRL fixed for “mate” by the European Union. They have been successfully applied for the determination of organophosphate pesticide residues in commercial samples and the positives were confirmed through GC–(ITD)-MS.

Parasitic flatworms cause serious infectious diseases that affect humans and livestock in vast regions of the world, yet there are few effective drugs to treat them. Thioredoxin glutathione reductase (TGR) is an essential enzyme for redox homeostasis in flatworm parasites and a promising pharmacological target. We purified to homogeneity and characterized the TGR from the tapeworm Mesocestoides vogae (syn. M. corti). This purification revealed absence of conventional TR and GR. The glutathione reductase activity of the purified TGR exhibits a hysteretic behavior typical of flatworm TGRs. Consistently, M. vogae genome analysis revealed the presence of a selenocysteine-containing TGR and absence of conventional TR and GR. M. vogae thioredoxin and glutathione reductase activities were inhibited by 3,4-bis(phenylsulfonyl)-1,2,5-oxadiazole N2-oxide (VL16E), an oxadiazole N-oxide previously identified as an inhibitor of fluke and tapeworm TGRs. Finally, we show that mice experimentally infected with M. vogae tetrathyridia and treated with either praziquantel, the reference drug for flatworm infections, or VL16E exhibited a 28% reduction of intraperitoneal larvae numbers compared to vehicle treated mice. Our results show that oxadiazole N-oxide is a promising chemotype in vivo and highlights the convenience of M. vogae as a model for rapid assessment of tapeworm infections in vivo.

The use of the mononuclear rhenium(IV) precursor [ReBr5 (H2 pydc)](-) (H2 pydc=3,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid) as a metalloligand towards dysprosium(III) afforded the first heterobimetallic Re(IV) -Dy(III) complex. Crystal structures and static and dynamic magnetic properties of both rhenium-containing species are reported herein. The 5d-4f compound shows an extended 1D structure and the AC magnetic measurements reveal frequency dependence at low temperature suggesting slow relaxation of the magnetization.

A summary of the resource.
Nanocrystalline La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Cu0.2O3−δ (LSFCu) material was synthetized by combustion method using EDTA as fuel/chelating agent and NH4NO3 as combustion promoter. Structural characterization using thermodiffraction data allowed to determine a reversible phase transition at 425 °C from a low temperature R-3c phase to a high temperature Pm-3m phase and to calculate the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of both phases. Important characteristics for cathode application as electronic conductivity and chemical compatibility with Ce0.9Gd0.1O2−δ (CGO) electrolyte were evaluated. LSFCu presented a p-type conductor behavior with maximum conductivity of 135 S cm−1 at 275 °C and showed a good stability with CGO electrolyte at high temperatures. This work confirmed that as prepared LSFCu has excellent microstructural characteristics and an electrical conductivity between 100 and 60 S cm−1 in the 500–700 °C range which is sufficiently high to work as intermediate temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (IT-SOFCs) cathode. However a change in the thermal expansion coefficient consistent with a small oxygen loss process may affect the electrode-electrolyte interface during fabrication and operation of a SOFC.

In this work we studied the electrochemical performance of Ba0.5Sr0.5Fe0.8Cu0.2O3-δ (BSFCu) as cathode for Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (IT-SOFC) with Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 (CGO) electrolyte and the effect of the symmetric cell preparation temperature on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. Symmetrical cells with the configuration BSFCu/CGO/BSFCu were prepared at 900 °C, 950 °C and 1000 °C to perform the electrochemical characterization in the 500–700 °C temperature range. The resultant area specific resistance (ASR) of the cells with different preparation temperatures followed the tendency: ASR900°C < ASR950°C < ASR1000°C. The symmetric cell constructed at 900 °C showed ASR values of 0.18, 0.078 and 0.035 Ω cm2 at 600, 650 and 700 °C respectively, which demonstrated superior electrochemical activities than previous reports. Additional, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopies (SEM and TEM) techniques were used to characterize the microstructure of the original and fired BSFCu materials and correlate it with the cell preparation temperature.

Among myo-inositol phosphates, the most abundant in nature is the myo-inositol hexakisphosphate, InsP6. Although it is known to be vital to cell functioning, the biochemical research into its metabolism needs chemical and structural analysis of all the protonation, complexation and precipitation processes that it undergoes in the biological media. In view of its high negative charge at physiological level, our group has been leading a thorough research into the InsP6 chemical and structural behavior in the presence of the alkali and alkaline earth metal ions essential for life. The aim of this article is to extend these studies, dealing with the chemical and structural features of the InsP6 interaction with biologically relevant 3d transition metal ions (Fe(II), Fe(III), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II)), in a non-interacting medium and under simulated physiological conditions. The metal-complex stability constants were determined by potentiometry, showing under ligand-excess conditions the formation of mononuclear species in different protonation states. Under metal ion excess, polymetallic species were detected for Fe(II), Fe(III), Zn(II) and Cu(II). Additionally, the 31P NMR and UV–vis spectroscopic studies provided interesting structural aspects of the strong metal ion-InsP6 interaction

Reaction fl ow (RF) chromatography with fl uorescamine reagent and UV – vis detection was used for the analysis of amino acids. The performance advantage of RF chromatography was tested against the conventional post- column derivatisation (PCD) methods. The results of the study veri fi ed that greater sensitivity could be obtained using RF columns compared to conventional PCD methods. The reaction loops employed in the conventional PCD methods did not need to be used, which resulted in more ef fi cient separations using RF columns. The selective detection of amino acids in this RF study reduced limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quanti fi cation (LOQ) by about 50% compared to conventional methods of PCD. The calibration data of the RF-PCD technique also yielded R 2 ≥ 0.99 and %RSD in peak areas ranging from 3.0 – 8.5%. The RF method also enabled multiplexed detec- tion since both the derivatised and non-derivatised fl ow streams could be analysed simultaneously.

Ectrum of Cu2CdSnSe4 quaternary semiconductor compounds with tetragonal stannite-type structure (space group I 4¯2m), a material which has been recognized recently as a potential candidate for thermoelectric applications, has been studied. Most of the fourteen Raman lines expected for this compound according to group theory analysis were observed in the spectrum. Besides to the two strongest A1-symmetry stannite modes at 172 and 192cm−1 originated from the motion of Se anion around the Cu and Sn cations which remain at rest, the leftover observed Raman lines were tentatively assigned to specific eigenmodes of the stannite crystal structure by comparing these line frequencies with those obtained for this compound from IR measurements as well as with those calculated Raman modes for the Cu2ZnSnSe4 stannite-compound reported in the literature. Con base en la teoría de expectativa-valor, el Mathematics Value Inventory (MVI) fue diseñado para medir la valoración de la matemática en cuatro áreas: interés, utilidad, logro y costo. En este trabajo se presenta la validación de la versión en español entre estudiantes universitarios uruguayos: validez factorial mediante análisis factorial confirmatorio (AFC), diferencias según género y validez predictiva del rendimiento académico. Se realizó un muestreo aleatorio estratificado simple según el rendimiento en matemática para un nivel de confianza de 95% y un error de 5%, participando voluntariamente 218 estudiantes (77% mujeres) de entre 18 y 29 años (M = 20.2, SD = 1.8). Los resultados confirman la estructura de cuatro factores relacionados y sugieren un factor global de segundo orden, que puede resultar más útil para una evaluación continua; el modelo de cuatro factores sería una mejor estrategia para detectar áreas problemáticas y comparar instituciones. Mayor interés y mayor necesidad de logro están asociados con un mejor rendimiento futuro; la utilidad y el costo emocional no tendrían impacto. No se encontró evidencia de diferencia según género. En suma, el MVI resulta adecuado para medir actitudes estudiantiles hacia la matemática, lo que puede orientar el diseño de estrategias de intervención.

A summary of the resource.
Borate glasses with the composition MO·2B2O3 (M: Pb, Sr and Ba) and N2O·2B2O3 (N: Li and Na) were prepared. Glass-ceramics of the same composition were obtained by heat treating glass powder. The structure of the glasses, was studied by FTIR and 11B NMR resulted in a similar structure (having BO3 and BO4 species). The PbO·2B2O3 sample shows the lowest fraction of four coordinated boron, N4, of the set. Glass crystallization was analyzed by thermal analysis, using the Kissinger method. The evaluated activation energy shows that the BaO·2B2O3 sample presents the highest value; meanwhile Li2O·2B2O3 shows the lowest one. Thermally stimulated luminescence was measured in glasses and glass-ceramics using a 90Sr radiation source. In most cases, glass-ceramics present a higher sensitivity than glasses. Defects present in glasses are increased by the crystallization to improve the TL response of these materials. When we compare the response, as the area under the curve, (which is related to the absorbed dose) barium borate glass-ceramics present the best response compared to the other studied borates.

The reported anti-Prelog selectivity in Raphanus sativus hairy roots prompted us to search for similar activity in other R. sativus systems, such as in vitro germinated sprouts, edible roots, and its associated endophytic microorganisms. Two test substrates were used in these studies: acetophenone and rac-ethyl 2-ethyl-3-oxobutanoate. Endophytes were isolated under substrate selective pressure and individual strains were evaluated for their ability to reduce both substrates. Among the isolates, two bacteria and a fungus having the potential to be used as biocatalysts were found: Bacillus megaterium which reduces acetophenone with excellent anti-Prelog selectivity, and Pseudomonas sp. and Penicillium chrysogenum with enantioselectivity and stereoselectivity for the reduction of rac-ethyl 2-ethyl-3-oxobutanoate, respectively.

The polymer precursor formation and the growth mechanism of (La0.5Ba0.5)(Mn0.5Fe0.5)O3 ceramic nanoparticles have been studied. First, we focused on the influence of isolated metals (La, Ba, Mn, Fe) on the polymer precursor formation by means of Raman, FT-IR, scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, showing that the presence of metal ions, especially iron, increases the oxidation rate of the polymer precursor, while the presence of barium leads to a higher degree of polymerization, preventing partial oxidation of the polymer at low temperatures and allowing the presence of nitrates at the combustion stage. Nevertheless, when all metals are present, the polymer precursor showed a largely homogeneous microstructure with a global average influence from all cations. Finally,we studied the microstructure evolution of nanoparticles obtained after calcination above 700 °C. SAXS and TEM analysis suggests that the formation of square-shaped nanoparticles below 900 °C and coalescence leads to the formation of larger-sized and round-shaped nanoparticles at 900 °C.

A summary of the resource.
In this report, we studied the effect of the addition of manganite nanoparticles on the microstructure and magnetotransport properties of polyaniline polymers. We showed experimental results on the fractal dimension of the polyaniline–manganite nanocomposites by means of small angle X-ray scattering measurements. A decrease in the number of polarons is observed for the composite with a concentration of 20% manganite nanoparticles. On the other hand, for the same concentration, the presence of a low magnetic field increases the number of polarons, in relation to an enhancement of the negative low field magnetoresistance (LFMR). This enhancement was observed for a critical amount of manganite nanoparticle addition in the whole temperature regime analyzed, as envisaged from the low magnetic field dependence in the polyaniline polaron formation observed using confocal Raman spectroscopy at room temperature.
