In the present research the content and composition of oils extracted from fillets (raw and cooked in oven) were studied. The five fishes studied were chosen among those whose consuption is the highest one in Uruguay: hake (Merluccius hubbsi) |b soapfish shark (Galeorhinus vitaminicus) King weakfish (Macrodon ancylodon) weakfish (Cynoscion striatus) and white croaker <Micropogon opercularis). In conclusion these fillets are sources rich in fatty acids from omega-3 family (especially EPA and DHA). However since the fishes are lean |b their total lipidic content is low. Content and composition of the oil were not affected by cooking in oven therefore the values determined in raw fillets can be used as approximate indexes of the prepared food. Ab initio multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) calculations of OH bond breaking in the water monomer and dimer are reported in this paper. Several basis sets and MRCI methodologies are tested in order to assess the quality of the expected results. Calculation of the hydrogen transfer curves in the dimer leads to the proposition that the coupling of excited states of A&Prime; symmetry &mdash; correlating to the state C̃1B1 in the equilibrium geometry of the monomer&mdash;causes decomposition of the dimer into HO&radic; and H3O&radic; when it is attempted to obtain its resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization spectrum under similar conditions to those used for the water monomer. The superoxide dismutase-like activity of a series of copper(II) complexes of the aminoacids glycine, alanine, valine, isoleucine, and serine has been investigated using the nitroblue tetrazolium/superoxide reduction assay. The results show that all the investigated complexes possess the capability to dismutate the superoxide anion generated in the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system. The results are compared with those obtained for the native enzyme superoxide dismutase, tested under the same experimental conditions. The lipophilicity of the complexes was tested determining their partition coefficients between physiological solution and n-octanol. The results show an important increment in lipophilicity with increasing complexity of the ligands and also in comparison with that of the free aminoacids. Saliva samples were collected at appropriate times |b and the samples were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The statistical evaluations of the pharmacokinetics parameters showed no significant differences |b either for the extent of absorption (AUC 0-48) or for the rate of absorption (as indicated by Cmax and Tmax) between both formulations. Significant differences were found between salivary concentrations 20 min.after the ingestion between both formulations. This was in agreement with the in vitro dissolution profiles.The mean elimination half-life for carbamazepine was found to be 28 hours+-11. Both formulations were bioequivalent according to Westlake's confidence interval of 20. It may be concluded from these results that saliva is useful for bioequivalence studies of carbamazepine using an appropriate sampling schedule. These compounds show several interesting properties such as ferroelectricity, piezoelectricity along the <em>c</em> axis, and photoconductivity. Moreover, BiSI is a potential semiconductor material for room-temperature gamma and x-ray detection, given its band gap of 1.57 eV and its high density, 6.41 g cm^&minus;3. In this work we present BiSI nanostructures synthesized by the solvothermal method with the intention of using them for ionizing radiation detection. The solvent was varied to study its influence in morphology, particle size and size distribution. Three different conditions were tested, using either water, monoethylene glycol and a mixture of both solvents. Nanostructures were characterized by XRD to determine the phase obtained and reaction completeness; TEM was used to observe nanostructures morphology, size, size distribution and crystallinity; and finally FT-IR diffuse reflectance was used to study monoethylene glycol presence in the samples. Nanorods in the range of 100&ndash;200 nm width were obtained in all samples, but round nanoparticles of around 10 nm in diameter were also detected in samples synthesized only with monoethylene glycol. Samples synthesized in monoethylene glycol were used to fabricate pellets to construct detectors. The detectors responded to ionizing radiation and a resistivity in the order of 10¹³ &Omega; cm was estimated. Fungal lectins constitute excellent ligands for development of affinity adsorbents useful in affinity chromatography. In this work, a lectin was purified from Pycnoporus sanguineus (PSL) mycelium using 3 procedures: by affinity chromatography, using magnetic galactosyl-nanoparticles or galactose coupled to Sepharose, and by ionic exchange chromatography (IEC). The highest lectin yield was achieved by IEC (55%); SDS-PAGE of PSL showed 2 bands with molecular mass of 68.7 and 55.2 kDa and IEC displayed 2 bands at pi 5.5 and 5.2. The lectin agglutinates rat erythrocytes, exhibiting broad specificity toward several monosaccharides, including galactose. The agglutination was also inhibited by the glycoproteins fetal calf fetuin, bovine lactoferrin, bovine transferrin, and horseradish peroxidase. The lectin was then used to synthesize an affinity adsorbent (PSL-Sepharose) and the interaction with glycoproteins was evaluated by analyzing their chromatographic behaviors. The strongest interaction with the PSL-derivative was observed with transferrin, although lower interactions were also displayed toward fetuin and lactoferrin. These results indicate that the purified PSL constitutes an interesting ligand for the design of affinity adsorbents to be used (i.e., in glycoprotein purification). Background The sawfly family Pergidae is best represented in South America, and it is the third largest family in the suborder Symphyta. Tequus is a Neotropical genus that has been reported in association with host plants of the genus Solanum (Solanaceae), with little information about the life history of its members. Tequus schrottkyi (Konow, 1906) was described from Paraguay, without any information about its biology and host plant. New information We report the first record of T. schrottkyi from Uruguay, with information on its host plant and details of its biology. The identification was based on morphology, DNA barcode is provided to allow identification using molecular characters. This sawfly species is associated with Solanum commersonii, a native plant common in Uruguay. Tequus schrottkyi presents several generations between March and July. The larvae feed on leaves and spin a silk cocoon in the soil in which they pupate. The adults exhibit sexual dimorphism, the female being larger than the male and with a different color pattern. The eggs are laid individually in the leaf margins into the leaf tissue. The larvae are unpalatable to a generalist predator, possibly due to defensive compounds sequestered from their host plant, known to contain toxic compounds. The use of zero-order and first-derivative flame emission spectrometry has been investigated for the determination of basal concentrations of lithium in serum and urine at the &micro;g dm&ndash;3 level. No significant matrix effect was observed; however, it was necessary to make use of background correction techniques. Two or three wavelength measurements and first-derivative spectrometry were used for this purpose; both methods gave similar results. Detection limits for serum of approximately 0.09 &micro;g dm&ndash;3 were found by both zero-order and first-derivative emission measurements, while normal lithium levels were found to be 29.3 and 1.17 &micro;g dm&ndash;3 for urine and serum, respectively. CATA questions are gaining prominence as a quick and easy method for obtaining consumer-derived sensory product characterizations. The present research contributes further methodological understanding by exploring individual differences in visual attention to CATA questions and investigating the relationship between visual attention throughout the task and consumers&rsquo; ability to discriminate among samples.<br />A consumer study was carried out in which 113 participants were asked to evaluate six plain crackers and to answer a check-all-that-apply question composed of 20 sensory terms, which was presented on a computer screen. While consumers completed the CATA tasks their eye movements were recorded using a remote eye-tracker. Considerable heterogeneity among participants existed with regard to the number<br />of fixations made when completing the CATA questions. Three groups of consumers who differed in their degree of visual processing (more thorough to less thorough) were identified. These groups also differed in their responses to the CATA question. Consumers who performed the most thorough visual processing of the CATA question, used, on average, a significantly larger number of CATA terms to describe the products<br />than consumers in the other two groups. Meanwhile, consumers who engaged in the least detailed visual processing showed lesser discriminative ability. The present work shows the results obtained during the first six months of the Pharmacokinetic Monitoring Section in our University Hospital in Uruguay. Plasma concentrations of Carbamazepine |b Phenytoin and Phenobarbital were monitored for the study. Analysis requests forms |b Sampling Instructions and Pharmacokinetics Algorithms are discussed. Results obtained only from plasma levels in ambulatory and hospitalised patients undergoing chronic therapy are analyzed. Michaelis-Menten elimination parameters of Phenytoin could be estimated for our patients (Km=13 mg/l and Vmax=0.4 mg/kg/h). Sex and comedication with Carbamazepine had no effect on the Phenytoin concentrations. On the other hand |b concomitant treatment with Phenytoin and/or Phenobarbital reduced the elimination half-life of Carbamazepine by 50. Phenobarbital has not been the drug of choice in patients undergoing monotherapy treatment. Collection of trough samples (prior to the administration of a dose) was appropriate for therapeutic drug monitoring of these anticonvulsants. Interest in measuring consumers&rsquo; perceived wellbeing in a food-related context has grown in the last<br />decade. Considering that wellbeing is one of the most important goals that people pursue to achieve a<br />good life, studying the influence of food on this construct can contribute to our understanding of how eating<br />behavior patterns are shaped. The conceptualization of wellbeing and the influence of specific food<br />products on different aspects of this construct are expected to vary with consumers&rsquo; cultural background.<br />The present work aimed to investigate cross-cultural differences in perceived wellbeing of food products<br />and to link those differences to product-specific consumer evaluations. A web-based study was carried<br />out with 1332 participants in seven countries on four continents: Brazil, China, France, Portugal, Spain,<br />Uruguay and USA. Nine food concepts (apple, beef, beer, broccoli, chocolate cake, coffee, fish, French fries<br />and milk) were presented to participants by means of an incomplete balanced design. For each concept,<br />participants gave their degree of agreement with 31 statements of a new wellbeing questionnaire, using a<br />7-point scale. The scores of the 31 items of the scale were significantly affected by country and food<br />concept, as well as through their interaction. The largest differences among products were found for<br />items related to physical and intellectual aspects of wellbeing, whereas the largest differences among<br />countries were found for items related to emotional and spiritual aspects. A new CYP26A1 homology model was built based on the crystal structure of cyanobacterial CYP120A1. The model quality was examined for stereochemical accuracy, folding reliability, and absolute quality using a variety of different bioinformatics tools. Furthermore, the docking capabilities of the model were assessed by docking of the natural substrate all-trans-retinoic acid (atRA), and a group of known azole- and tetralone-based CYP26A1 inhibitors. The preferred binding pose of atRA suggests the (4S)-OH-atRA metabolite production, in agreement with recently available experimental data. The distances between the ligands and the heme group iron of the enzyme are in agreement with corresponding distances obtained for substrates and azole inhibitors for other cytochrome systems. The calculated theoretical binding energies agree with recently reported experimental data and show that the model is capable of discriminating between natural substrate, strong inhibitors (R116010 and R115866), and weak inhibitors (liarozole, fluconazole, tetralone derivatives).
