Abstract
A summary of the resource.
TiO2(B) has potential as an anode material for Li-ion batteries. Although theoretical and experimental studies related to the intercalation of Lithium (Li) in TiO2(B) already exist, to the best of our knowledge there are no studies in the open literature related to Li intercalation in low-index surfaces of this oxide phase. Therefore, we study the intercalation of Li in the (100) and (001) surfaces of TiO2(B) using Density Functional Theory (DFT). The DFT+U Hubbard methodology was included to consider the strong correlation of the “d” electron states of the transition metal. Electronic densities of states of the surfaces were analyzed in the diluted limit concentration of Li. We found a small-induced magnetic moment present. The diffusion of Li atoms in the surfaces was studied using the Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) method. Our results indicated that the Li intercalation in the (100) and the (001) surfaces is a favorable process. Moreover, we found diffusion pathways energetically stables for both surfaces. Calculations of charge density difference with Li intercalated in the energetically stable positions on the surfaces indicate that the charge density on Li is a local phenomenon and a charge transfer occurs from Li to the nearest Ti and O atoms.

In the present work, we considered the effect of Nb and charged vacancies on the properties of magnesium hydride. We performed spin-polarized ab initio calculations substituting an Mg atom by an Nb impurity. Then, some charged vacancies were included in the MgH2 + Nb system (VH, VMg, or VMg–H). In each case, three possible charge states were considered (+1, 0, or −1). We computed cohesion and formation energies, band gap, and magnetic moment. We also calculated the transition level energy value and the density of states. Nb states are located in the gap, and a magnetic moment is induced. In the case of the system with charged vacancies, we found that VH+ and VH0 are the more probable vacancies formed, and the states near the Fermi level (EF) are filled, thus getting an important reduction in the band gap.

To study the influence of the emulsion sign in phenytoin bioavailability two emulsions (w/o and o/w) were prepared. Bioavailability studies were carried out with both emulsions in Wistar male rats. The study was of a randomized two-way cross over design. A radiotracer technique was chosen as analytical procedure due to the small blood sample collected. 14C-phenytoin was synthesized with a high yield and suitable radiochemical purity. It is concluded from a biopharmaceutic point of view that the emulsion sign does not seem to affect the amount of phenytoin absorbed as it is shown through the comparison of the areas under curve up to 24 h. An emulsion with oil as an external phase is responsible of a longer absorption taking into account the apparent elimination constant rates.

The larval stage of the cestode parasite Echinococcus granulosus causes hydatid disease in humans and livestock. This infection is characterized by the growth in internal organ parenchymae of fluid-filled structures (hydatids) that elicit surprisingly little inflammation in spite of their massive size and persistence. Hydatids are protected by a millimeter-thick layer of mucin-based extracellular matrix, termed the laminated layer (LL), which is thought to be a major factor determining the host response to the infection. Host cells can interact both with the LL surface and with materials that are shed from it to allow parasite growth. In this work, we analyzed the response of dendritic cells (DCs) to microscopic pieces of the native mucin-based gel of the LL (pLL). In vitro, this material induced an unusual activation state characterized by upregulation of CD86 without concomitant upregulation of CD40 or secretion of cytokines (interleukin 12 [IL-12], IL-10, tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNF-�], and IL-6). When added to Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists, pLL-potentiated CD86 upregulation and IL-10 secretion while inhibiting CD40 upregulation and IL-12 secretion. In vivo, pLL also caused upregulation of CD86 and inhibited CD40 upregulation in DCs. Contrary to expectations, oxidation of the mucin glycans in pLL with periodate did not abrogate the effects on cells. Reduction of disulfide bonds, which are known to be important for LL structure, strongly diminished the impact of pLL on DCs without altering the particulate nature of the material. In summary, DCs respond to the LL mucin meshwork with a “semimature” activation phenotype, both in vitro and in vivo.

Cystic echinococcosis is caused by the larval stages (hydatids) of ces tode parasites belonging to the species cluster Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, with E. granulosus sensu stricto being the main infecting species. Hydatids are blad derlike structures that attain large sizes within various internal organs of livestock ungulates and humans. Hydatids are protected by the massive acellular laminated layer (LL), composed mainly of mucins. Parasite growth requires LL turnover, and abundant LL-derived particles are found at infection sites in infected humans, raising the question of how LL materials are dealt with by the hosts. In this article, we show that E. granulosus sensu stricto LL mucins injected into mice are taken up by Kupffer cells, the liver macrophages exposed to the vascular space. This uptake is largely de pendent on the intact mucin glycans and on Clec4F, a C-type lectin receptor which, in rodents, is selectively expressed in Kupffer cells. This uptake mechanism operates on mucins injected both in soluble form intravenously (i.v.) and in particulate form intraperitoneally (i.p.). In mice harboring intraperitoneal infections by the same spe cies, LL mucins were found essentially only at the infection site and in the liver, where they were taken up by Kupffer cells via Clec4F. Therefore, shed LL materials circulate in the host, and Kupffer cells can act as a sink for these materials, even when the parasite grows in sites other than the liver.

The synthesis, labeling, and biological evaluation of a dextran derivative (DCM-30-iso) as potential radiopharmaceutical for sentinel lymph node imaging is presented. DCM-30-iso bears mannose as active moiety and isocyanide as ligand for technetium through the formation of a '4+1' Tc(III) mixed-ligand complex. A second derivative without mannose (DC-25-iso) was also prepared and evaluated as control. DCM-30-iso and DC-25-iso were synthesized from dextran in four steps (>50% overall yield) and characterized by spectroscopic methods. Labeling with 99mTc was achieved by reaction with 2,2',2''-nitrilotris(ethanethiol) and 99mTc-EDTA. Radiochemical purity was above 90% and was stable for at least 4 hours postlabeling at 37°C. The identity of the 99mTc complex was established through comparative HPLC studies using the well-characterized analogous Re-DC-25-iso complex. Biodistribution and imaging experiments of 99mTc-DCM-30-iso showed high uptake in the popliteal lymph node, which could be blocked with preinjection of mannose, and very low uptake in other nodes and organs. The nonmannosylated 99mTc-DC-25-iso derivative showed negligible uptake in all lymph nodes. The novel dextran-mannose derivative DCM-30-iso can be successfully labeled with 99mTc to give a well-characterized '4+1' complex with favorable biological properties as sentinel lymph node imaging agent.

A summary of the resource.
During spring 2012, massive honeybee mortality was observed within 2000 beehives in southwest Uruguay. The incident was presumed to be due to pesticide applications in the hives surroundings. To find the causative agent, bees were analyzed by gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, employing a method reported by our group that has been expanded to 39 compounds. The new scope includes parathion-methyl, which was found at an average 0.48 μg bee−1, ten times higher than the LD50 for bees. Parathion-methyl is only allowed to be sold as microcapsules, a slow release formulation type with 80–50 μm particle diameter. Surprisingly, it was stated that parathion-methyl microcapsules were applied in the zone but 1000–2000 m ahead from the affected hives. This fact was not only a confirmation of the distances bees can fly from the hive, but also demonstrated that the microcapsules, mistaken for pollen, were transported to the hive where the toxic was released. Although microcapsules have environmental advantages as a pesticide delivery system they can threaten honeybees’ survival.

The impacts of the modern, agrochemicals based agriculture that threatens the overall systems sustainability, need to be monitored and evaluated. Seeking for agroecosystems monitors, the present article focus in the occurrence and abundance of aquatic macroinvertebrates, that have been frequently used as bioindicators of water quality due to their relationship with land use. Some of these organisms are on the top of the food chain, where bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes can be observed, and they can turn into secondary pollution sources of systems and terrestrial organisms as well. Odonate nymphs, which belong to the functional group of predators, were selected for this study. A methodology to determine 73 pesticide residues in odonate nymphs by LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS was developed. A QuEChERS sample preparation strategy was adapted. As it is complex to obtain samples especially in disturbed ecosystems, the method was minimized to a sample size of 200 mg of fresh nymphs. The method was validated and good recoveries (71–120%) with RSDs below 20% for the majority of the studied pesticides at least at two of the assayed levels 1, 10 and 50 µg kg−1 were obtained. For 32 analytes the limit of quantitation was 1 µg kg−1 and 10 µg kg−1 for the others. The lineal range was observed between 1–100 µg kg−1 in matrix-matched and solvent calibration curves for most of the assessed pesticides. LC-MS/MS matrix effects were evaluated, 40% of the analytes presented low or no signal suppression. Only flufenoxuron presented high matrix effects. The obtained methodology is adequate for pesticide multiresidue analysis in aquatic macroinvertebrates (odonates) aiming to contribute to the ecological state evaluation of freshwater ecosystems.

This is the first study to employ a reaction flow (RF) HPLC column of a short 5 cm length to identify antioxidants in a variety of complex samples represented by tea, utilising simultaneous multiplexed detection techniques. The detection responses included: underivatised UV at 280 nm, underivatised fluorescence detection (FLD) and a post column derivatisation (PCD) colorimetric response for antioxidants via the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Both similarities and differences in the chromatograms obtained using the three detection modes highlight the power of multiplexed detection. The main findings from the bioactive profiling include: the Fruit of the Forest tea contains the lowest level of antioxidants and is clearly distinct from the other three teas which are based on Camellia sinensis. The antioxidants detected in the green tea and the two black teas are similar. The green tea contains a higher concentration of the two main antioxidants that eluted at 4.0 and 5.7 min. The simplicity of sample analysis and chemical profiling using RF columns and selective detection was the focus of this study via the analysis of antioxidants in tea using the FRAP reagent. The main advantage of RF-PCD is the ability to split flows for simultaneous detection with minimal post column dead volume contributions, making peak matching between detectors much easier. To date, few studies exploit the power of RF-PCD multiplexed detection to differentiate and identify bioactive compounds in various complex samples. Applications of the approach developed in this study may include antioxidant screening and profiling of natural products, foods and beverages.

This communication is the first to demonstrate the high throughput power of a 30 mm in length reaction flow (RF) column to conduct a targeted analysis of phenolics in a complex sample matrix (tea) utilising post-column derivatisation (PCD). Sensitivity, speed and efficiency could be tuned via the selection of the RF column separation flow rate. RF-PCD compared to conventional PCD approach with a 100 μL loop resulted in a gain of up to 150% in sensitivity. The reaction loop volumes employed in conventional PCD approaches will always be the limitation for compatibility with low dispersion chromatography systems and/or columns.

Se analizaron bebidas de arroz sometidas a diferentes tratamientos térmicos y a UAPH. Se midió su tamaño de partícula y se correlacionó con medidas de estabilidad; se observó que las muestras procesadas por UAPH tienen una estabilidad significativamente mayor. Se estudió la interacción entre micronutrientes (Ca++) y las proteínas de la bebida y se halló que al aumentar la concentración de Ca++ la estabilidad de la bebida disminuye hasta alcanzar 80 ppm de Ca++, a partir de la cual se mantiene constante. Los recuentos de mesófilos aerobios totales, esporas, Bacillus Cereus y Enterobacteriaceaes para muestras tratadas por UAPH (temperatura de entrada 85 ºC, 300 MPa temperatura en válvula 135 ºC) y UAT (142 ºC 6 seg) muestran una supervivencia menor a 1 UFC/mL en ambos tratamientos para todos los recuentos. Se incubaron las muestras UAPH y UAT a 30 ºC durante dos semanas sin desarrollo microbiano o alteración alguna. El proceso de ultra alta presión de homogeneización (UAPH) demostró ser una tecnología válida para estabilizar y preservar la leche de arroz al reducir el tamaño de las partículas por debajo del micrómetro, favoreciendo la estabilidad fisicoquímica de la bebida y generando, concomitantemente, una reducción de la flora alterante.

Among many sources of natural bioactive substances, mushrooms constitute a huge and mostly unexplored group. Biologically active secondary metabolites of Ganoderma, a group of wood-degrading mushrooms, have recently been reviewed. Our previous study revealed the antimicrobial activity of extracts from G. resinaceum grown in submerged culture against phytopathogens. Different factors can influence the production of secondary metabolites, including nutritional factors. In this study we evaluated the influence of different culture conditions on the antimicrobial activity of extracts from liquid cultures of G. resinaceum, through use of a factorial design. Minimum inhibitory concentrations for extracts produced under different culture conditions were determined against Staphylococcus aureus and Xanthomonas vesicatoria. Based on the results of these assays, larger-scale cultures in malt extract broth supplemented with 20 g/L glucose and a 15-day incubation time should be performed in order to isolate from G. resinaceum antibiotic compound(s) that are potentially useful against S. aureus. In addition, pH 5 should be considered for the production of antimicrobial metabolites against X. vesicatoria from supernatant broths or extracts from G. resinaceum.

In situ neutron powder diffraction experiments have been performed on samples of SrMnOy, La0.1Sr0.9MnOy, and La0.2Sr0.8MnOy (2.5 ≤ y ≤ 3) to determine the existence of oxygen-vacancy ordering and study order–disorder transformations in the LaxSr1−xMnOy system. The vacancy ordered monoclinic Sr7Mn7O13, tetragonal (LaxSr1−x)5Mn5O13 and orthorhombic (LaxSr1−x)2Mn2O5 (x = 0, 0.1, and 0.2) phases have been observed, together with already described La0.1Sr0.9MnO2.55. Reversible vacancy order–disorder transitions have been observed for the La-containing (LaxSr1−x)5Mn5O13 phases. Oxygen-vacancy disordered cubic or pseudocubic phases have also been observed with increasing stability range in y with increasing x. Preliminary phase diagrams of the system have been derived as a function of temperature and oxygen content.

Bulk SrMnOx samples with oxygen contents 2.5pxo2.7 have been studied using a combination of neutron time-of-flight and highenergy high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements along with thermogravimetric analysis. We report the identification and characterization of two new oxygen-vacancy ordered phases, Sr5Mn5O13 (SrMnO2.6-tetragonal P4/m a¼ 8.6127(3)A ˚ , c ¼ 3.8102(2)A ˚ ) and Sr7Mn7O19 (SrMnO2.714-monoclinic P2/m a¼ 8.6076(4)A ˚ , b ¼ 12.1284(4)A ˚ , c ¼ 3.8076(2)A ˚ , g ¼ 98.203(2)1). The nuclear and magnetic structures of Sr2Mn2O5 are also reported (SrMnO2.5 nuclear: orthorhombic Pbam, magnetic: Orthorhombic Ay type Pcbam with cM ¼ 2c). In the three phases, oxygen-vacancies are ordered in lines running along one of the (100) directions of the parent cubic perovskite system. Oxygen-vacancy ordering allows the charge and orbital ordering of the Mn3+ and Mn4+ cations in the new phases.

El año 2005 ha sido declarado por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas como Año Internacional de la Física. El texto de la declaración destaca en primer lugar la importancia de la Física en el avance de la comprensión de la naturaleza y de los avances tecnológicos. Pero a continuación nos indica qué tiene de particular este año para que dicha disciplina merezca una distinción especial: “…Siendo conscientes de que el año 2005 es el centenario de varios descubrimientos científicos decisivos por Albert Einstein, que son la base de la física moderna,…” Adicionalmente, en 2005 se cumplen 80 años de la visita de Einstein a la ciudad de Montevideo, por lo que tiene una particular relevancia para los uruguayos. Hemos entendido de interés la confección del presente artículo, incluyendo una reseña de los trabajos publicados por Einstein en 1905, y de sus consecuencias en la Física y en los avances tecnológicos, un relato de su visita a Montevideo, y finalmente una traducción al castellano del artículo publicado en Annalen der Physic, el 26 de setiembre de 1905 y donde se hablara por primera vez del “Principio de Relatividad”.

The role of α‐ and β‐d‐glucose, and d‐gluconate anion, acting as capping agent, on silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was evaluated using both Raman and density functional theory studies. The particles were synthetized employing glucose, as reducing and blocking agent, in alkaline conditions. Capping agents were characterized through surface enhancement Raman spectroscopy together with modeling performed using silver clusters. Several geometries were optimized, and its energies and wavenumbers were calculated for each of them. Vibration normal modes from d‐glucose isomers and d‐gluconate were obtained and compared with those reported in bibliography, showing a satisfactory correlation. Comparison between experimental and calculated frequencies reveals a preference for d‐gluconate anion acting as capping agent under the necessary presence of d‐glucose on the surface of the AgNPs. The study of energies shows a greater affinity of d‐gluconate for the silver atoms (above −1.3 eV for both geometries) than for other configurations of the glucose molecule (about −0.66 eV in the case of α‐d‐glucose).

A summary of the resource.
The H2Ti3O7 system has potential to be applied as a Li/Na/K-ion battery anode material. It is relevant to theoretically study the (100) nanosheet of this material since there are no studies regarding intercalation of Li/ Na/K in it. Density Functional Theory calculations with the Hubbard methodology (DFT + U) were conducted in order to find and test several intercalation sites for the three different metals, finding stability and high voltages in all of them. Moreover, the electronic density of states confirms the stability of the systems and charge transfer studies were performed to compare the electron transfer between the most stable sites of each intercalated metal and the surface. Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) calculations were performed, finding lower barriers of 0.54 eV and 0.41 eV for Li and Na diffusion. This study shows that this material is promising and can be a guide for future works.
