Ralstonia solanacearum is the causative agent of bacterial wilt of potato. Ralstonia solanacearum strain UY031 belongs to the American phylotype IIB, sequevar 1, also classified as race 3 biovar 2. Here we report the completely sequenced genome of this strain, the first complete genome for phylotype IIB, sequevar 1, and the fourth for the R. solanacearum species complex. In addition to standard genome annotation, we have carried out a curated annotation of type III effector genes, an important pathogenicity-related class of genes for this organism. We identified 60 effector genes, and observed that this effector repertoire is distinct when compared to those from other phylotype IIB strains. Eleven of the effectors appear to be nonfunctional due to disruptive mutations. We also report a methylome analysis of this genome, the first for a R. solanacearum strain. Although sex-related differences in gastrointestinal physiology have been vastly reported, its impact on drug oral bioavailability and bioequivalence (product discrimination) is often ignored. On this work results from an average bioequivalence study between tablets containing 600 mg of the antiretroviral efavirenz (EFV), carried out with 14 healthy subjects (8 female and 6 men) in a randomized 2-period, 2-treatment crossover design, are analyzed from a sex-based approach. Sequences were balanced within each sex group. Considering all subjects, no differences were observed on EFV absorbed amount, as shown by the estimated 90CI of the AUC96 Test/Reference bioequivalence ratio (T/R): 0.950–1.05. However, results were not conclusive due to the 90CI for CMAX T/R was 0.743–1.07. Over this parameter, a significant sex-by-formulation interaction was detected: 90CI CMAX T/R was 0.838–1.36 in women and 0.540–0.920 in men; with a 52% relative difference between point estimates. Formulation differences were therefore evidenced only by male subjects. In vitro dissolution and disintegration tests for both products were carried out in two aqueous media: A) SLS 0.25% and B) HCl/KCl pH 1.2. T/R results for dissolution efficiency and tablet disintegration times of formulations in both A and B media were highly correlated with CMAX T/R bioequivalence results observed in women and men respectively, showing that a dissimilar gastrointestinal environment between sexes affected EFV oral absorption. This work shows how sex-by-formulation interaction can affect bioequivalence conclusions. Sex effect on product discrimination should be specially disclosed in bioequivalence studies, mainly for drugs aimed to be given to both sexes. Reducing equivalents enhanced the benzimidazol-1-yl derivative inhibition of the cumenyl hydroperoxide-induced lipid peroxidation. The ESR spectrum of the benzimidazol-1-yl derivative, reduced anaerobically by NADPH-supplemented microsomes, showed characteristic spin couplings. Compounds bearing unsaturated nitrogen heterocycles were always more active than those bearing other groups, such as nifurtimox or nitrofurazone. The energy level of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital was in fair agreement with the capability of nitrofurans for redox-cycling and related actions. It is concluded that nitrofuran inhibition of microsomal lipid peroxidation and cytochrome P-450-catalyzed reactions was mostly due to diversion of reducing equivalents from NADPH to dioxygen. Trapping of free radicals involved in propagating lipid peroxidation might contribute to the overall effect of the benzimidazol-1-yl and substituted triazol-4-yl derivatives. Since peroxides are vulnerable to further decomposition |b the complete oxidative history of the oil may not be revealed. The anisidine test a measure of secondary oxidation products |b is considered useful in that it shows the past history of the oil. Effects of accelerated storage test on the anisidine and peroxide values of commercially samples were studied. The results obtained indicate that the anisidine value is a good method to predict storage stability of fats. Some processing steps in producing edible fats and oils were studied. Bleaching clay performs decomposition of oxidation products and this effect alone would reduce the peroxide value. Comparative studies were undertaken to determine the effects of bleaching on the anisidine value. Analysis of damaged oils before and after deodorization showed that little reduction of anisidine value occurred. En este trabajo se describe el uso de una reacción multicomponente, la reacción de Passerini, como un experimento de laboratorio en un curso de grado de Química Orgánica. Es un proceso rápido, eficiente y simple que permite obtener productos complejos a partir de moléculas sencillas y en un paso de reacción. Diferentes parámetros fueron analizados para determinar cuán amigable es esta reacción con el medio ambiente, en las condiciones ensayadas. El estudiante tendrá la posibilidad de discutir sobre química verde, desarrollo de moléculas bioactivas, síntesis orientada a la diversidad, reacciones multicomponente y química en disolución acuosa. High quality fruit are demanded by consumers across the globe. The presence of localized small necrotic areas within the flesh, which may or may not be visible at the surface of fruit (e.g., physiological disorders, bruises, rots), can negatively affect perception of fruit quality and consumers’ willingness to purchase/ consume. Research on how consumers’ visual attention is drawn to different symptoms is lacking, but offers the potential to understand how defects influence consumers’ decision-making. In this context, the aim of the present study was to evaluate consumers’ visual attention to defects in fruit and to evaluate the relationship between visual attention and rejection (i.e., decision not to re-purchase). Using apples as a case study, consumers (n = 123) completed two experimental tasks involving eye-tracking technology. First, consumers completed a free-viewing task, which included apple images with different severities of three defects (internal browning, bruising and cavities). Second, they saw seven apple images with different degrees of bruising and indicated their future purchase intention. In the apple images without defects, consumers mainly fixated their gaze on the core and the seeds of the apple. However, as the degree of symptoms increased, consumers shifted their attention and fixated their gaze on the area affected by bruises or disorders. Consumers’ visual attention toward the defects, and their future rejection of purchases of apples, increased with the severity of the defects. Using survival analysis, the relative areas of bruising that corresponded to rejection by 25% and 50% of consumers was estimated as 2.3 � 0.5% and 4.8 � 0.7%, respectively. The present work suggests that attentional capture of fruit disorders can predict consumers’ rejection and contribute to setting quality standards. Arsenic exposure in children is a public health concern but is understudied in relation to the predictors, and effects of low-level exposure. We examined the extent and dietary predictors of exposure to inorganic arsenic in 5–8 year old children from Montevideo, Uruguay. Children were recruited at school; 357 were enrolled, 328 collected morning urine samples, and 317 had two 24-h dietary recalls. Urinary arsenic metabolites, i.e. inorganic arsenic (iAs), methylarsonic acid (MMA), and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography with hydride generation and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-HG-ICP-MS), and the sum concentration (U-As) used for exposure assessment. Proportions of arsenic metabolites (%iAs, %MMA and %DMA) in urine were modelled in OLS regressions as functions of food groups, dietary patterns, nutrient intake, and nutritional status. Exposure to arsenic was low (median U-As: 9.9 mg/L) and household water (water As: median 0.45 mg/L) was not a major contributor to exposure. Children with higher consumption of rice had higher U-As but lower %iAs, %MMA, and higher %DMA. Children with higher meat consumption had lower %iAs and higher %DMA. Higher scores on “nutrient dense” dietary pattern were related to lower %iAs and % MMA, and higher %DMA. Higher intake of dietary folate was associated with lower %MMA and higher % DMA. Overweight children had lower %MMA and higher %DMA than normal-weight children. In summary, rice was an important predictor of exposure to inorganic arsenic and DMA. Lignocellulosic materials represent a sustainable source of chemicals and fuels because of their lowcost and ample supply. The current limitations on bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass include poorenzyme stability and inhibition by secondary or final products. Here, we report the biochemical char-acterization of a novel, rumen metagenome-derived glucanase and xylanase, named EndoG. From thededuced amino acid sequence it was assigned to glycoside hydrolase family 5. EndoG showed similarityto non-characterized proteins, and its parental organism is likely related to the genus Prevotella. The1146pb ORF encoding EndoG was over-expressed in Escherichia coli and the protein purified. The recom-binant EndoG displayed a wide range of pH activity with a maximum at pH 5.0 and at least 65% activityat pH between 4.5 and 7.5. The enzyme was highly stable at 55◦C for 1 h, and retained 81% activity at 4 MNaCl. EndoG was also active in the presence of diverse divalent cations, detergents, EDTA, acetate, fur-fural, imidazolium ionic liquids, and ethanol. Glucose or cellobiose had no effect in EndoG performance.EndoG behaved as a multifunctional endo- and exo-glucanase, as well as xylanase, displaying activity on4-methylumbelliferyl-�-d-cellobioside, p-nitrophenyl-�-d-cellobioside, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC),phosphoric acid swollen cellulose, avicel, xylan, lichenan and sugar cane bagasse. Tetrahydro-1-benzazepines have been described as potential antiparasitic drugs for the treatment of chagas disease and leishmaniasis, two of the most important so-called ‘forgotten tropical diseases’ affecting South and Central America, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania chagasi parasites, respectively. Continuing our extensive work describing the structural characteristics of some related compounds with interesting biological properties, the crystallographic features of three epoxy-1-benzazepines, namely (2SR,4RS)-6,8-dimethyl-2- (naphthalen-1-yl)-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1,4-epoxy-1-benzazepine, (1), (2SR,4RS)- 6,9-dimethyl-2-(naphthalen-1-yl)-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1,4-epoxy-1-benzazepine, (2), and (2SR,4RS)-8,9-dimethyl-2-(naphthalen-1-yl)-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1,4- epoxy-1-benzazepine, (3), all C22H21NO, and two 1-benzazepin-4-ols, namely 7-fluoro-cis-2-[(E)-styryl]-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1-benzazepin-4-ol, C18H18FNO, (4), and 7-fluoro-cis-2-[(E)-pent-1-enyl]-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1-benzazepin-4- ol, C15H20FNO, (5), are described. Some peculiarities in the crystallization behaviour were found, involving significant variations in the crystalline structures as a result of modest changes in the peripheral substituents in (1)–(3) and the occurrence of discrete disorder due to the molecular overlay of enantiomers with more than one conformation in (5). In particular, an interesting phase change on cooling was observed for compound (5), accompanied by an approximate fourfold increase of the unit-cell volume and a change of the Z0 value from 1 to 4. This transition is a consequence of the partial ordering of the pentenyl chains in half of the molecules breaking half of the 3 symmetry axes observed in the roomtemperature structure of (5). The structural assembly in all the title compounds is characterized by not only (N,O)—H� � �(O,N) hydrogen bonds, but also by unconventional C—H� � �O contacts, resulting in a wide diversity of packing.
